JULY 4 – A Women’s Independence Day
by Diane Marie Amann

It will come as no surprise that suffragists in the United States claimed this date — the anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence– as their own.

It’s well known that in the months before that declaration issued, Abigail Adams pressed drafters to “Remember the Ladies.” Neither her husband John nor the principal drafter, Thomas Jefferson, heeded her plea. Also well known: campaigners for women’s rights modeled the 1848 Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments after the 1776 document.

Less known but worth noting is the role Independence Day played in a 1909 campaign for women’s suffrage in Washington.

As detailed in this 2008 essay by Paula Becker, campaigners in that Pacific Northwest state preferred a low-key approach — the “so-called ‘still hunt’ strategy”– to the in-your-face militancy of the Pankhursts and other British suffragists.

A centerpiece of this strategy was theWashington Women’s Cookbook (1909), sold door-to-door as a way personally to lobby women in order that they might persuade their husbands, fathers, and sons to vote to grant women the vote. (Then, during the 1st week in July 1909, activists from across the country arrived in Seattle — many by a train dubbed the Suffrage Special — to hold a suffrage convention alongside AYP, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, the state’s 1st World’s Fair.

On the 4th of July, a Sunday, famous suffrage leaders took to the pulpit to spread “the gospel of woman suffrage,” Becker wrote. They included several subjects of prior IntLawGrrls posts — Rev. Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, Florence Kelley, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman — and others, like Pauline Steinem, who blazed a feminist path that her granddaughter Gloria would follow.
Days after this spate of sermonizing, the convention ended with July 7 “Suffrage Day” fesitivities at the AYP Fair itself.

As a consequence of these and other campaign activities, the male electorate approved suffrage on November 8, 1910. Thus did women in Washington eventually win a measure of independence.

Suffragist

Addresses by Women on the Fourth of July in the Early 19th Century

Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States by the National Woman Suffrage Association, July 4th, 1876.

Excerpt:
The history of our country the past hundred years, has been a series of assumptions and usurpations of power over woman, in direct opposition to the principles of just government, acknowledged by the United States at its foundation, which are:
First. The natural rights of each individual.

Second. The exact equality of these rights.

Third. That these rights, when not delegated by the individual, are retained by the individual.

Fourth. That no person can exercise the rights of others without delegated authority.

Fifth. That the non-use of these rights does not destroy them.2

And for the violation of these fundamental principles of our Government, we arraign our rulers on this 4th day of July, 1876,—and these are our

Articles of Impeachment.
Bills of Attainder have been passed by the introduction of the word “male” into all the State constitutions, denying to woman the right of suffrage, and thereby making sex a crime—an exercise of power clearly forbidden in Article 1st, Sections 9th and 10th of the United States Constitution.

I have seen it over and over again in my profession as a woman engineer, the loss to our society by the limitations imposed on women. Although they are graduating at over 20%, the profession peaked out at 11% and is on the decline. I told my management recently that women engineers are not just a protected class, they are an endangered species. And I have been facing intense sexist discrimination on the job, again.

Let me tell you what that means. The standards for the air you breath and the water you drink will be less likely to be maintained. Our technology will develop based on short term bottom line gratification instead of long term quality and values.

It is those values that women bring to the table that many men view as an inconvenience that just makes their job just too hard for them. They need the playing field slanted in their favor and the talent pool limited.

When it comes down to it, they are afraid.

I know many women were hoping an African American POTUS would level the playing field. Obviously that is not happening. It just is not going to work that way. We are half of the whole of most every demographic. Systems that exclude us are inherently flawed. Our society will not move forward without our inclusion.

Women’s rights are human rights.

July 4 is the deadliest day of the year in the US.
Be careful if you’re going to be out on the roads. The mutants don’t seem to consider the safety of others when it comes to drinking and driving, or most everything else for that matter.
Be careful out there.

DWP – Thanks for the warning. Because of that we will stay home. Being a beach, coastal city, you can bet there is a lot of drinking and driving but today has been a cloudy day.

The entire batch of fireworks that were planned for San Diego Bay went off in one huge explosion! No injuries. I heard an explosion earlier but I thought it was the beginning of the display. Didn’t think about it after the initial boom.

14

freddiebrown 07.05.12 at 11:37 am

Dances – Wow, that must have been interesting for San Diego fireworks. We built a real fire in the yard and laid on the deck watching the stars – our version of fireworks.

Going to Atlanta early next week – will meet with folks from all over the country. Will find out how they feel about the economy and letting them know to “vote wisely” – they usually open up when I say that. Then I know who they are voting for so I can try to change their minds if they are koolaided. I am going to do my part by telling them not to sit on the fence and to go out and preach it to their friends and neighbors. (and, and, and).

I found the following interesting….sorry, if it’s long.

Ann Romney: Woman Being Eyed for Ticket
Thursday, 05 Jul 2012 07:40 AM

Mitt Romney’s wife says her husband is thinking about picking a woman to be on his ticket this fall.

Ann Romney told CBS News, “We’ve been looking at that and I love that option as well.”

She said the person selected for the No. 2 spot on the Republican presidential ticket should be “someone that obviously can do the job but will be able to carry through with some of the other responsibilities.”

Several women have been mentioned as possible vice presidential candidates — among them former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Governors Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Susana Martinez of New Mexico; New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington State.

Two other high-profile Republican women, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota are not considered likely candidates.

It was Palin who broke the mold when John McCain chose her as his running mate in 2008. She was the first woman to be nominated on a Republican ticket for the White House.

Kerry Healey, who was Romney’s lieutenant governor when he was governor of Massachusetts, told Newsmax that the candidate works well with women. She pointed out that his administration in Boston was 50 percent female.

“We were the only state in the nation that had that at the time,” said Healey, now the Romney campaign’s special adviser and foreign-policy coordinator. “He did that deliberately.

“He values women’s contribution in the workplace. He also had a very family-friendly environment within our administration,” Healey added. “He not only respected our work as women, and as coworkers, but he also respected our roles at home.”

Healey said that whomever Romney chooses, it will be someone “who would be a full partner, who would work as a key member of his administration.

“And that that person would be given significant responsibility,” she emphasized.

But it will also have to be someone who can match Romney’s energy on the campaign trail — and that won’t be easy. “He is one of the most energetic and patient campaigners I have ever seen,” she said. “He is simply indefatigable. He will be in five different locations in a day, and give five very strong, impassioned speeches, and never lose energy. It’s extraordinary.”

Of the possible candidates, Rice, 57, is the one with the best name-recognition, but she has repeatedly said she is not interested in the job. She recently placed first in a CNN poll as Republicans’ top preference for the job.

Pundits believe she would energize the party and give Romney a huge boost with her foreign policy credentials.

Ayotte, 43, was by Romney’s side in a July 4 parade in Wolfeboro, N.H. and would add undoubted glamour to the ticket. But she has two disadvantages, she is untested on the national stage and two New Englanders on the ticket could be seen as a disadvantage in many parts of the country that believes the North East is too liberal.

Haley, 40, would also be a glamorous addition. The Indian-American is a tea party favorite who could help shore up Romney’s support among conservatives. However her ratings in the Palmetto State are below 50 percent.

McMorris Rodgers, 43, has been pushing her name to the forefront of potential female candidates. She is the top-ranking Republican woman in the House as vice chair of the Republican Conference, but Washington State is not considered in play for the Romney campaign and he might want to choose someone who could help him win a swing state.

Martinez, 52, has the dual advantage of coming from a swing state and being a Latino, a group that Romney knows he needs to win over if he is to be successful in November. But she does not have a high profile outside her state and has clashed with Romney over immigration.

Other outside possibilities for Romney’s running mate include former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, both 57.

The fraud could have picked a woman VP but he chose a worm like Joe Biden. So much for the hopey changey pipe dream. I am looking forward to a good woman VP.
Any crack in the ceiling is a good crack to me. My husband would LOVE to see Nikki Haley considered. I have heard her speak many times. She is smart and un-afraid to take the medicine in order to turn her state around. I am sure many will not be happy with all the issues that these women have, but if we nit pick, we will be our worst enemy while the tostesterone guys will continue to dominate the stage.

I was watching Fox and they had a panel which includes a Democrat discussing the topic of this Black Muslim Congressman (Dem)Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) who said some treasonous stuff in May at a Muslim Convention.
Read it below and say it ain’t true. I am shocked that no other media reported on it but you can google it and read it in various sites. Below is a video. Please tell me it is just a right wing propaganda, dubbed and done over and there is no such thing possible in our Congress. IS this some fucking Democrat that got elected because ?

Congressman: America Schools Should Be Modeled After Islam & Use Koran
http://www.therightscoop.com/muslim-congressman-american-schools-should-be-modeled-after-madrassas/

Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN), the Muslim congressman who once said that the Tea Party would “love” to see black Americans “hanging on a tree,” made another controversial statement during a May 26 speech. This time he gave what is at the heart of the Islamic mind and that is the indoctrination of Islam into the West.

Speaking about the American education system, Carson told the audience that American schools should be modeled after Madrassas and touted the benefits of schools that use the Koran as their “foundation.”

A Madrassa as: “a Muslim school, college, or university that is often part of a mosque.”

The congressman said,

“America will never tap into educational innovation and ingenuity without looking at the model that we have in our madrassas, in our schools, where innovation is encouraged and where the foundation is the koran.”

“And that model that we are pushing in some of our schools meets the multiple needs of students. Most of us are visual learners. Some of us are auditory learners. We learn by hearing. many of use are kinesthetic learners. We learn by doing, touching, and feeling. I have found, as my wife is a principal and I have a five year old daughter at Salema, that we need an educational model that is current, that meets the need of our students. America must understand that she needs Muslims.”

I see. So the Congressman would have us believe that we should teach our children in little madrassas the koran, a book that without the hadiths is virtually impossible to understand, and which promotes a pedophile leader who demands that Christians, Jews and anyone who will not convert to Islam to be killed with the edge of the sword. And this is supposed to “meet the needs of our students” and “tap into educational innovation and ingenuity”? This is supposed to be an “educational model that is current”?

Another month of poor job report on Obama’s watch – yes, the same guy that said last month that the private sector is “doing fine” and then had to back peddle. At least this month he learned quickly and downplays it – of course it was someone elses fault: Congress, Bush, Romney, you, me, the lazy people..

Obama downplays weak jobs report;
http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/06/politics/campaign-wrap/index.html?hpt=hp_bn3

President Barack Obama downplayed a weak jobs report Friday as he wrapped up a two-day bus tour to critical states in the November election, while Republicans pounced on the news to declare the president’s policies have failed.

Stock prices dropped sharply at the opening bell on the report that the economy created 80,000 jobs in June, well below the number needed to bring down the 8.2% unemployment rate.

At a campaign event in Poland, Ohio, Obama said the job growth — while smaller than needed — continued a trend that has added 4.4 million jobs in the past 28 months following what he called “the worst economic crisis of our lifetime.”

“That’s a step in the right direction,” Obama contended.

Now I am praying Romney outspends him and gets his ass out!!!
