These men were asked to testify before Congress about a potential ban on coverage of birth control for women. Look long enough at this photo (and think about the fact that these men are being empowered by our Congress to judge us as sluts and sinners and to withhold access to medicine and health care based on their view of us on the Slut Meter) until you are angry enough to do something about it.
I can only hope that the sheer insanity of some of these cavemen is becoming obvious enough to women that we will wake up and put a stake through the undead hearts of vampires like Santorum, Friess, and Issa. As always, shame on obama for opening this Hell Mouth with no intention of actually combatting the demons who poured out. His only craven purpose was to weaken Romney, not to protect women’s civil rights or improve our access to safe, affordable health care. It’s actually gone beyond an attack on the civil rights of women. We are now faced with serious threats to our bodies — reproductive disorders, syndromes, and diseases are extremely serious and common. Undiagnosed and untreated, they will sterilize, scar, and KILL women and girls. I’m not even talking about unplanned pregnancy here. I’m talking about endometriosis, PCOS, and HPV. I’m talking about lumps in breasts that become cancer. I’m talking about hormonal imbalances and diabetes.
How DARE a failed politician like Santorum presume to dictate the terms of intercourse and how much importance we can place on pleasure during sex in order to avoid sinning (gag) in HIS god’s eyes? Is this guy for real? If he was a teacher in my daughter’s school I’d report him as an obvious pervert and possible pedophile. Come on Catholics, don’t be fooled by obama’s ploy to send you running into this nutjob’s arms.
How DARE a chairperson of a Congressional committee NOT ALLOW women to testify on our own behalf about the effects of limiting our access to routine health care?
How DARE the state of Virginia contemplate passing a law requiring rape victims to be re-raped by a technician with a probe simply to guilt them into not terminating a pregnancy caused by their rapist?
How DARE Santorum’s sugar daddy get on national TV and wax reminiscent about the good old days when women had to literally clench their knees together to avoid rape and pregnancy?
Said billionaire Santorum funder Foster Friess on on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell: “On this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it’s so inexpensive. You know, back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.”
********** Pumapac PROWL *********
1. Call Rep. Darrell Issa’s office now and ask him how DARE he bar women from testifying to OUR Congress about a matter that profoundly affects our health and well-being, not even to mention our Constitutionally granted CIVIL RIGHTS?? Dial 202-225-3906.
Send him an email HERE. Use a zip codefrom California’s 49th Congressional district to get through the filter (92587, 92590, 92591):
Dear Rep. Issa,
How dare you exclude women from testifying on our own behalf about legislation that would have a profound effect on our health and well-being? I am a woman — I vote, and I will work with other women and our friends and families to defeat your woman-hating agenda.
Sincerely, your name.
Email the Governor of Virginia. Use the address: 500 Ivy Ave, Charlottesville VA 22903 and Violet Socks’ letter as a template:
Dear Governor McDonnell:
It’s my understanding that you have said you will sign HB462, the bill mandating that women seeking abortions be subjected to object rape with a vaginal probe. Please understand that if you sign this bill, I and other women in Virginia will ensure that you will forever be known as “Rapist McDonnell.” We will work tirelessly to block your political ambitions FOREVER and to make sure that your complicity in the state-mandated object rape of Virginia citizens is never forgotten. Sincerely, Your Name.
Pumas, don’t let the bastards get away with this. And don’t forget who started this war on our bodies and our rights.

For those not up to date on the actual text of the Blunt amendment that would allow individual and organization to withhold coverage of any health care they deem “immoral” or “against their religion” is here:
http://www.stlbeacon.org/issues-politics/280-washington/116057-under-fire-for-rights-of-conscience-amendment-blunt-claims-misinformation
Key paragraph of amendment:
“Nothing in this title (or any amendment made by this title) shall be construed to require an individual or institutional health care provider, or authorize a health plan to require a provider, to provide, participate in, or refer for a specific item or service contrary to the provider’s religious beliefs or moral convictions. Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, a health plan shall not be considered to have failed to provide timely or other access to items or services under this title (or any amendment made by this title) or to fulfill any other requirement under this title because it has respected the rights of conscience of such a provider.”
The Blunt amendment, which the jackass Scott Brown is now co-sponsoring, would enshrine in national law the right of ANY insurance provider to send women back to the Stone Age.This is an amendment to the re-authorization of a TRANSPORTATION Bill. Seriously. So members who want to vote against misogynistic, fascist, fundamentalist, unconstitutional limits on our freedom would also have to vote against an important bill that will bring federal dollars and jobs to their districts.
Assholes.

If anyone wants more on Scott Brown and emergency contraception, here’s some history of his amendment in MA in 2005 to allow a hospital to DENY EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION TO RAPE VICTIMS.
There was a lot of discussion of this at H44 at this thread and the adjoining threads.

….
Another commentor supplied this ‘defense’ of Brown (emphasis mine):
“He VOTED FOR the morning after pill for rape victims TWICE. The bill came up in the Mass legislature. He supported the bill, but introduced a religious exemption so that health care providers with religious objections wouldn’t be required to terminate pregnancies. His admendment failed, so he voted to pass the morning after bill anyway.

Here’s more from the story at
boston.com/news/politics/2008/articles/2010/01/13/abortion_takes_stage_in_senate_race/?page=full
On WCVB-TV last night, he said he could not recall whether he had actually filed that amendment, although Senate records clearly say he did.
More on Brown’s attitude to women’s choice:
Brown cosponsored a bill] which would require a woman to wait 24 hours before having an abortion and to review pictures and information detailing the developmental progress of her fetus.
[ Brown got ] the support of the Massachusetts Citizens for Life in this race, based on his position on issues including abortion, stem cells, and federal health legislation. He also opposes federal funding for abortion, supports strong parental consent rules for minors, and supports the ban on what opponents call partial-birth abortion.[....]

Sorry my last comment went off too soon. Here’s the context of the issue.
From the Houston Chronicle:
chron.com/opinion/outlook/article/Mandatory-ultrasound-bill-giant-step-back-for-1688395.php
The ultrasound law requires that women undergoing an abortion submit to a mandatory ultrasound as well as hear the physician describe the sonogram’s image, with few exceptions. [....]
Because the fetus is so small at this stage, traditional ultrasounds performed through the abdominal wall, “jelly on the belly,” often cannot produce a clear image. Therefore, a transvaginal probe is most often necessary, especially up to 10 weeks to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The probe is inserted into the vagina, sending sound waves to reflect off body structures to produce an image of the fetus. Under this new law, a woman’s vagina will be penetrated without an opportunity for her to refuse [....]
Here’s an image of what is involved, and links to other legislative bodies that are proposing similar laws.

Simonson 02.18.12 at 8:01 pm
I guess I don’t really see how Obama “started this war on our bodies and our rights”. This whole thing started because he insisted on providing funding for contraception and abortion.
Do we really hate Obama so much that we have to turn the good things he does into bad things?

turndownobama 02.18.12 at 11:10 pm
Headclunker,
Speaking of prevention being cheaper than pregnancy, there have been quite a few studies showing that covering contraception DOES save the insurance company money — or at least pays for itself, breaks even (“cost-neutral”) depending on how far you follow the costs of the pregnancy/delivery/maternity leave, etc.
Here’s a good readable summary, with footnotes to many different studies. (Of course the insurance companies may pretend they have an excuse to raise premiums anyway, but I think there will be some regulatiosn to keep them from abusing that.)

murphy 02.18.12 at 11:28 pm
Simonson, go back to middle school and take a reading comprehension course. You either understand what I’m saying based on what I wrote or you need remedial help. Contraception was already covered by health insurance before obama invented this controversy, and if he had actually cared about protecting our rights he wouldn’t have caved to the catholix.
invalidresponse 02.19.12 at 8:28 am
Wow Murph, that is a little harshly worded don’t you think?
And no, that isn’t entirely correct. It was covered in some states, and by some policies, this is the attempt to roll it out (and make it mandatory) nationally, by the national health care act. You know, that piece of crap that passed when he caved on single payer.
DancesWithPumas 02.19.12 at 12:04 pm
Obama didn’t ‘cave’, he didn’t supported single payer. He played the support game long after single payer was off the table (ref: pelosi statement)to appease his base.
I think simonson’s concluding accusatory assumption is harsh and insulting. Obviously he hasn’t read the post above and Murphy’s preceeding arguments regarding this issue.
turndownobama 02.19.12 at 2:42 pm
And no, that isn’t entirely correct. It was covered in some states, and by some policies, this is the attempt to roll it out (and make it mandatory) nationally, by the national health care act.
================
That’s not entirely correct either.
It’s complicated. Aiui, the Supreme Court ruled long ago, nationally, that IF you were going to cover preventative care for anyone, you had to include prevention of pregnancy or you would be discriminating against women. Some states had already been requiring preventive care, so policies there were including women.
invalidresponse 02.19.12 at 6:02 pm
Look, I have no idea who “Simonson” is, and it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that I believe that it is possible that the question could have come from a sincere place. If you come from the perspective that the Republican party has had two major objectives 1) to make Obama a one term president, and 2) repeal the so called “Obama care” legislation.
Coming from THAT perspective, it is entirely legitimate to see this as just another way to undermine and tear down bits and pieces of that legislation, by the republican party. If that is indeed the mind set, it stands to reason that this is not a “war” started by Obama. This mandate is not new, it was in the original bill, under the “essential benefits package.” What is new, is that because these provisions are coming into effect the Conference of Catholic Bishops decided to attempt to be excluded from the mandate. The republicans decided that perhaps, because of these objections by the Bishops, this was yet another way to be able to challenge the act, and achieve goal #2. At the very least, it would be able to drum up controversy against the current administration (election year politics) and propagate the “war on religion” mantra. After all, it would NOT be hard to convince the “Christians” that the “secret Muslim” in the white house was waging war on the “Church” (ie.. good for republican politics)
And yes, Obama’s first response was to back the mandate, but as soon as the “war on religion” mantra began to get traction, he (as he usually does) choose to not stand up to a matter of principle’s and took an alternative route that insured the “letter of the law” was enforced (women got contraceptive coverage without cost) but undermined the “principle of the law” that “birth control is medically necessary to ensure women’s health and well-being” and should not be up for argument.
But can he be credited with “starting the war”? In my rare to be humble opinion, that is a TRULY debatable issue. Because I can see the point of view that perhaps “Simonson 02.18.12 at 8:01 pm” could have come from, I felt the “because I said so” and “can’t you read” and “you are being stupid” response was a bit harsh. (yes, this is her blog, and she can do what ever she wants, but I would not expect her to object to at least plausible agreements to her perspective, or at the very least a question that might gently suggest a different perspective)
As far as “Do we really hate Obama so much that we have to turn the good things he does into bad things?” being (DancesWithPumas 02.19.12 at 12:04 pm) “simonson’s concluding accusatory assumption is harsh and insulting.” IF we could step back from a mindset of the multi-year fight that is PUMA, it is probably more based in truth then the bulk of us would care to admit.
Again, just my rare to be humble and unafraid to express opinion.

invalidresponse 02.19.12 at 6:02 pm
Yeah. In the UHC issue itself there are layers of good things and bad things. UHC good (eg Hillarycare). Fascist feudalistic crony capitalist employer/private insurance Obamacare bad. But within that, covering contraceptives etc good. Negotiating with the bishops, bad. Not caving completely, good.
From what I’ve read, it was the bishops who picked the fight. HHS was just proceeding along with spreading nationwide the same kind of policies that 28(?) states already had, and Catholic universities etc in those states were already providing contraceptive coverage with no controversy.
And as you say, the GOP jumped on it for political reasons.
Imo Hillary is not the ONLY good person working in the current Democratic administration. When something good does come out of the confusion, we don’t have to give Obama himself credit for it.

turndownobama 02.20.12 at 6:11 pm
Simonson 02.20.12 at 2:21 pm
Overall, yeah. But he did have the choice of how to react to the bishops. Instead of ignoring them and letting it be a non-issue, he did offer a ‘compromise’ which made headlines and tempted the GOP to come out and make fools of themselves (incidentally making birth control into a debatable, negotiable issue like abortion).
I expect most of the timing was legitimate, but when he did get that small window of choice, he exploited it callously.

DancesWithPumas 02.23.12 at 9:56 pm
Invalid,
I don’t have a preference. Post as you will, as I will too.
I’m not sure I can verbalize this, but I’ll try, and hope you get my point /position.
I agree that any step(s) toward equality for all is a positive.
My disgust, (mild disgust maybe, maybe not), is that basically the gay marriage issue has been central to a majority of gays, as well as lesbians (albeit many lesbians were against gay marriage as a central issue back in the 80s/90s). What disturbs me is that much can, and has been accomplished where gay and or males are invested and involved, ie AIDS, Gay Marriage. Every success re: AIDS activism / gay marriage stings because it reminds me that if males, gay, straight, or otherwise, actually believed in equal rights for everyone, they woukd have been with us on the ERA. The ERA would not still be an issue this many decades later. No matter how many minorities, disenfranchised groups demand/attain equality, we, at the end of the day, are still women… second class citizens.
It’s been decades since I’ve bought into the bullshit that a rising tide lifts all boats. Our boat is still anchored and sinking steadily. I don’t believe for a minute that gays believe in equality for everyone except when it serves as a rallying cry for their self-interests.
I don’t know if you recall the story I related quite some time ago regarding the SFO Bay Area’s fundraising walk across the GG Bridge? Granted, it’s only one story, but it is indicative of the point I’m trying to make.
If you remember it, I won’t repeat it here.
Anyway… carry on.
turndownobama 02.24.12 at 12:53 am
Well, the marriage equality victories are in state laws; the people of that state immediately get the benefits. But the ERA is an amendment to the US Constitution, which requires a large number of states to ratify it before it has any effect. (And getting enough of the holdouts to ratify may be hopeless at this time.)
So it makes sense for gays to put their energy where they can get immediate returns. And anything that weakens the anti-sex crowd helps us all. And lesbians are half the gay population too.
invalidresponse 02.24.12 at 6:53 am
It is a personal battle for me. And it is a battle I have fought for more than 15 years. I was forced to give up the country of my birth because my discriminating, bigoted government forced me to choose between the love of my life and my country. My anger, resentment, and true sorrow fueled my resolved to continue this fight even though I was forced to preform it from outside the country.
Now that I am a widow and am considering returning back to the States, this fight has taken on a self preservation aspect. You see, I have lived in a country that has granted me full equality for many years. I have lived the difference. I don’t wonder what it will be like “one day.” I know what it is like today. I know what it is like for children not to see themselves as “less than” and feeling that they are so unworthy that even their own government discriminates against them. I know what it is like to watch political debates and not be forced to hear the candidates denigrate me and people like me. This is about a government that is in place to protect her citizens that instead refused to give me those same protections under the law I was entitled to. These small steps are huge victories to me.
Intellectually, I know that women are not treated equally, and that the ERA is an important and needed law. But personally this battle is an attempt to correct a true, concrete, physical, emotional and continuing harm. One that is easy to identify, explain to others, and gather supporters to join in the fight.
It isn’t just a State by State fight, DOMA is the real battle. A fight that is being won, both in the courts and in the hearts and minds of most of those that are not stuck in the bigoted so called “christians” that have been and are continuing to be controlled by the huge money making “religions” that are aimed in controlling both the government and by proxy the people of the country.
This “over reach” of the GOP and “religious right” over the rights of a woman and her body, is only going to help this fight. You see, no one ever cared about what the westboro baptist “church” did to LGBT for years until they also began protesting soldiers funerals. THEN because it was against someone besides “just” the LGBT, there was a backlash. I pray that the now attacks on women by these “religions” will create the same backlash and wake everyone up.
Dances, I also do not believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. I do believe however that evil prevails when good people do nothing. And that nothing motivates good people more then to feel the same attack on themselves that they have ignored others receiving for years.
Talk about “taking my country back”…. You have no idea, this fight is personal.
invalidresponse 02.24.12 at 6:58 am
Just to be clear, with the exception of that one paragraph that post was not directed toward Dances or anyone else. It was just an explanation of facts. My facts and perspective.

And women’s issues are being pushed where there is room for some immediate effect. It’s just the ERA that’s stuck.

Hillary isn’t my savior. No one is. My personal preference is to focus on the enemy and to cut them off at the knees at every turn. Until that happens we’ll continue to grovel and roll in ecstasy at the crumbs that fall from the tables of those who still believe they are ordained to dictate the quality of our lives. At this point, 40+ years later, the fight isn’t for myself, it’s for skipper, lily, belle, kristyn, jeanna, nicole, noelle, grete, mairead, aubrey, michael, fox, marc, sean… on and on and on.
That the pricks, and women who have internalized prickdom, denied the superlative candidate we had in Hillary Clinton tells me if we ever have a woman president in my lifetime it will, in all likelihood, be one of those who will do the bidding of her puppetmeisters.
Anyway, i’ll die when I die, and my death won’t have anything to do with Hillary, or any other politician.

Hey DWP – heavy sigh was just from quietly reading the comments above. Some things seems so un-attainable – like a woman President for starters.
However, on another note, I am glad that Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Oscar in Iron Lady (Magaret Thatcher). Nice that it is a woman of substance woman about a woman of substance not some young Hollywood type.
I was in San Francisco last week and when the plane landed, we saw airforce I parked on the tarmac – the pilot announced. Then the cab driver had to radio to see if the roads into the city had cleared from being blocked. Ugh!

It’s official as of today I am on the Democratic ballot to run for U. S. Representative Cd1 Missouri against 2 opponents.
Yahooooo!!! My name is first on the ballot I drew the lowest number 364.
Big surprise! “US Rep. Carnahan files to run against US Rep. Clay in St. Louis’ 1st District. Says Clay: `Game on”.
As my one opponent said: “Game ON” Please donate help me unseat both of my opponents. I need your help! I will get the job done and “Your Voices” will be heard and respected.
Below is a link with the full story and yes I am in the race and on the ballot, but you can’t tell by this bias story.
I was interviewed by the Associate Press but have not seen any story yet.
Lets go get them “stand up” with me lets win this one for us all!

freddiebrown #69 and Delle #71.
First thank you for the congrats.(:
freddiebrown: I agree with you I wish more would run as well.
Delle: My to opponents are going to go after each other. They are going for blood and it will be the dirties Congressional race in the U.S. unfortunately. It will be about which political dynasty family will win.
What bothers me deeply is this race will not be about the people of CD1 or how we are going to put our country back on its feet.
I will focus solely on the constituents of CD1 and what I think can bring the district back to a strong thriving district with jobs through bring back our manufacturing. The district’s needs are plenty I will be their “voice” in Congress.
Plain and simple I don’t care about what my 2 opponents do to each other. I care about the people. I am asking them to hire me to work for their needs. They are my bosses and they are all that matters.
The media will ignore my campaign and will not report the truth such as my name Candice Britton is first on the ballot. I drew number 364. Mr. Clay is second on the ballot not first. The lies to the people from the media is inexcusable to say the least.
As far as the media I have no control over who they cover. I think the story from the stlbeacon and the reporters bias says it all.

Sandra Fluke is the woman who was not allowed to testify at the “men only” hearing on the issue of female contraception earlier in the month, but was later allowed to testify at a House hearing on 23 February.
Rush Limbaugh has now spent THREE DAYS vilifying Sandra Fluke calling her a “slut” and a “Prostitute” and out right lying about the content of her testimony. This man is not just some crazy, never listened to, talk show host, he has real power in Washington, and over the Republican party.

Invalid,
You may be unaware of the boycott / letter writing campaign going on via Facebook in which many women and pumas are participating. Liberal media seems to be countering limbaugh’s misogyny quite effectively as well, albeit it’s a bit hard to swallow given their record of misogyny; and sexist-in-chief obama’s personal call to Sandra Fluke just prior to her appearance on MSNBC.
Isn’t Murphy’s post germane to the issue? And doesn’t it negate the so-called cricket response accusation?

Rush Limbaugh Advertisers Pull Commercials In Wake Of Sandra Fluke ‘Slut’ Firestorm

on Friday, another mattress company, Sleep Number, announced through a spokeswoman that it had also pulled its ads from Limbaugh’s show. So did companies Legal Zoom, Citrix and Quicken Loans.
All cited the nature of Limbaugh’s statements, as well as the vociferous complaints they were getting, as the reason for their withdrawal of the ads.

Here’s some background info on Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who limbaugh describes as a “slut” and a “prostitute” and who Basil99, a right-wing gasbag commenter at hillaryis44, refers to as a “bimbo”:
via turndownobama
March 2nd, 2012 at 11:45 pm
http://www.law.georgetown.edu/pils/CurrentPILS.htm
Sandra Fluke’s professional background in domestic violence and human trafficking began with Sanctuary for Families in New York City. There, she launched the agency’s pilot Program Evaluation Initiative. While at Sanctuary, she co-founded the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which after a twenty-year stalemate, successfully advocated for legislation granting access to civil orders of protection for unmarried victims of domestic violence, including LGBTQ victims and teens. Sandra was also a member of the Manhattan Borough President’s Taskforce on Domestic Violence and numerous other New York City and New York State coalitions that successfully advocated for policy improvements impacting victims of domestic violence.
As the 2010 recipient of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Fran Kandel Public Interest Grant, she researched, wrote, and produced an instructional film on how to apply for a domestic violence restraining order in pro per. She has also interned with the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking; Polaris Project; Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County; Break the Cycle; the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project; NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund; Crime Victim and Sexual Assault Services; and the Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County.
Through Georgetown’s clinic programs, Sandra has proposed legislation based on fact-finding in Kenya regarding child trafficking for domestic work, and has represented victims of domestic violence in protection order cases. Sandra is the Development Editor of the Journal of Gender and the Law, and served as the President of Law Students for Reproductive Justice, and the Vice President of the Women’s Legal Alliance. In her first year, she also co-founded a campus committee addressing human trafficking. Cornell University awarded her a B. S. in Policy Analysis & Management, as well as Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies in 2003.

When people talk about sending coathangers or something to a politician, I’ve been suggesting sending duplicates to Ellen Degeneres or Greta or some celebrity who can keep count and announce the totals. But maybe that’s being done electronically now.
This Forbes article has info on the advertisers lost and other effects of the feminist actions.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomwatson/2012/03/05/the-new-networked-feminism-limbaughs-spectacular-social-media-defeat/2/
Adds Kate Harding: “I think the public aspect is really important. #mooreandme, the Limbaugh boycott, the Komen/Planned Parenthood uproar all worked because there was somewhere to express ourselves visibly. Who knows how many feminists were sending letters and making phone calls over similar instances in the past? But without any way for an outside observer to measure it, the target of a boycott or letter-writing campaign was never forced to acknowledge that criticism publicly.

GoJoyKnocks – Curious minds want to know more. Who made threats. I just saw the video clips – the edited and un-edited ones where the guy Professor Derrick Bell said, Oh well, it doesn’t matter now that people see it(meaning now that Obama is President). I didn’t know who Professor Derrick Bell was (as some of you may not either) Quote: And this video is a smoking gun showing that Barack Obama not only associated with radicals, he was their advocate.
But as we all know, no one cared 4 years ago that Obama held radicals close to his chest BUT, will “vetting” him at this stage do anything in his re-election or it just vindicates what we thought all along, only this time we have more evidence.

Excerpt:
(CNN) — Here’s the fantasy: A half-naked women lies across a couch, lips pouty and cleavage prominent as her sultry gaze implores you to buy this bottle of perfume.
The reality: Women make up 51% of the United States yet only 17% of seats in the House of Representatives. They’re 3% of Fortune 500 CEOs and 7% of directors in the top 250 grossing films.
What’s the connection? We live in a sexualized society where the gap between fantasy and reality is vast and harmful, director and activist Jennifer Siebel-Newsom says.
“Women are aspiring to do great things in leadership, yet the glass ceiling is still there because of the way media depict women,” Siebel-Newsom said. “It influences our culture and dictates our gender norms and values.”
Power in the boardroom: Women versus men
Siebel-Newsom’s documentary, Miss Representation, is the latest cinematic foray in the movement to challenge portrayals of beauty in “the media,” a term used to describe all forms of mass communication, from the internet, TV, film, magazines, radio and advertising.
It may sound like some tired feminist rant to anyone who grew up with a smartphone. In fact, women are objectified more than ever, experts say, thanks to a constant barrage of images from all forms of media, many of them connecting products to a pair of breasts and a coy smile.
“The number of images out there means advertisers have a much more difficult time breaking through the clutter, causing the content to be much more violent and sexualized to get consumers’ attention,” said Occidental University associate professor Caroline Heldman, who specializes in media, gender and race.
“Meanwhile, the research to come out in the last 10 years shows just how damaging this idea of self-objectification is, the idea that your value of self-worth is dependent on the amount of sexual attractiveness you have to the outside world.”

Recently, a bill introduced in Arizona’s House of Representatives proposed requiring advertisers to add a disclaimer on digitally altered photos. The proposed legislation is modeled after laws in Britain, where the Advertising Standards Authority monitors companies for egregious acts of Photoshopping. It also has the power to ban ads.
——
“We are hurting because we don’t have more female politicians. It’s very important for people to be aware of the connection between the degrading images around us and the fact that it’s so difficult for women to be taken seriously as politicians,” said Kilborne, whose renowned film series, Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women, has been remade four times since the 1970s.
——————
“It’s crazy to see how imbalanced it is. We have 87% of the buying power yet we still don’t really have a voice,” said Mullen, 18.

I have, unfortunately, had cause to be reminded how low the glass ceiling is. Women are coming out of the engineering schools at 20%, but less than 11% remain in the profession because it is so hostile to women.
http://www.mainstreet.com/article/career/employment/why-are-women-engineers-jumping-ship
It situation was very bad and the worse part about it were the women involved who exploited the sexist discrimination for their own special interests. I have seen this before. Alot of the time, I feel that women who are not in male dominated fields are low on empathy for women who are. I feel bad when I cannot help out other women, but I have such a hard time just doing the right thing and holding my own.
Well, I am going to get down in the trenches and fight. Let karma take care of those who sell out. I got some thing to get right and living well is the best revenge.

Well, imo a sexist attack that actually accuses you of something (like accusing Palin of faking a pregnancy or mismanaging the delivery of her baby, or accusing Fluke of being a slut or prostitute by ‘asking for money for sex’ or ‘having more sex than she can afford’ or ‘knocking on your door to ask for money so she can have sex with three men that night’) is worse than just using some near-meaningless bad words for body parts that everyone has (t-t, c-t, prick, dick, asshole, etc).

Amazing Kilborne utube..thanks for sharing. I’m an advertising victim today.
And I watch this Kilborne video after I’ve put highlighter in my hair and painting my nails (I swear the last time I had painted nails was 20 years ago for a week or so for fun. Lightest lilac on one hand and beige on the other hand and no one is home to see it but my dog. Sheesh..

‘cept, those words cunt, twat, bitch, are not near-meaningless, just as nigger, jungle-bunny, (to my credit, thse are the only insulting words I remember for African Americans, and, no, I’m not asking anyone to volunteer to expand the list.), are not near-meaningless just because they’re, on their face, equivalents for caucasians, cracker, blue-eyed devil, etc., because words carry weight and represent histories of oppression. Calling a dude a prick, doesn’t reinforce the power, depth, nor breadth of the ruling class’s (male) dominance / oppression of women.
It’s the same reason men will degrade men by calling other men ‘bitches’ but you never hear men call women ‘pricks’? To refer to a woman as a ‘prick’ would intimate that women are part of the privileged caste.
You gotta wonder, too, why and when, genitalia came into use as “curse” words. I’m thinking those words, gender divisions, reinforce the gender based power hierarchy. I’m also thinking obne can tell alot about a persons sexual fantasies and or sexual fears/traumas based on the sex based ‘curse’ words they use; motherfucker, being one.

freddie,
I don’t know about teh beyonce / perfume commercial but the US burger king commercial is pretty raunchy. Obviously they are targeting and vying for the attention of males and trying to garner brand loyalty, but given women are the majority in the US and control 87% of the spending, I think the advertisers are missing the boat.
What I find funny about the burger king commercial is the lengths advertisers go to to reflect what they think of males… that the only thing that will get male attention is sex. Sorta like gorillas with shiny objects. I’m thinking the advertisers get it right and the targeted males are too fluckin’ dull to recognize they’re being insulted.

I must be 140% heterosexual, that Beyonce ad looked like a parody to me. I really don’t see it as sexy. Maybe I am just too old, because I am sure that they sell a large percent of the stuff to women.
ipotter 03.11.12 at 10:37 am
Thanks for the Beyonce ad, Freddie. We are so accustomed to products being sold in this way that I’m wondering if it might have a numbing effect on some of us who are older and have been fed a steady diet of it for as long as we can remember. But it is nothing short of soft porn and oh so degrading to women. It becomes embedded in the subconscious that women are only good for one thing, which keeps that glass ceiling in its place.
gojoyknocks 03.11.12 at 11:02 am
I have a hard time visualizing the suffragettes, sitting around between forced feedings, thinking if only there was a way to enlarge our tits and a pill to skew our hormones, we would be more fuckable. I’m about an inch away from giving up on women and a mile past knowing I would be better off if I had cultivated the art of manipulating men sexually, first learned at the age of two, than I am today stewing in self-rightousness. Sad, isn’t?

Is this not proof postive that the TROLL is an ObaMAO supporter from WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY back? roflmbo
______________
You bet she is.. and she’s NOT even American. She uses Google for historical information regarding Bill and Hillary and anything related to US History. Turndown is NOTHING more than an Obama mole getting paid by the post. She infiltrated Pumapac using them as her vehicle for authenticity and they in turn, use her as their chief disruptor of this forum to advance their misplaced agenda.
OWS is an example of their last failed agenda. Supporting the wrong causes for the right reasons it typical when they step out of their element of expertise… Research is not their strong suit!”
—————————
Can you imagine? Turndownobama rarely comments here, yet pumapac is accused of using her as an agent to disrupt the His44 blog, for which, by the way, Murphy has the greatest respect! Typical spewing of the paranoid “everything is a conspiracy” right-wing freaks.
Seems some of the commenters at His44 need to rationalize almost everything that counters or questions their fallacious claims with facts or a different points of view.
This is a fair example, albeit a relatively mild one, of the reason I stopped reading comments over there. A few loud mouthed chicken little right-wing ignoramuses holding court 24-7 (blog hogs). That, in an of itself, isn’t too unusual, but on a site with Hillary’s name attached to it populated by the antithesis of what Hillary is and stands for, is, in the least, bizarre, and damages the intent, good work of His44 admin, and credibility of the the Hillaryis44 blog.
I rarely agree with turndownobama but I admire her scholarship and, even moreso, her principled stance and stick-to-it-ness in light of the barrage of insults she constantly receives from the lackwitted.
If the bulk of the commenters over there represent those who support Hillary, I can 100% understand some of the reasons the obots ridiculed them, and indirectly, us.
Imo, Hillaryis44 should consider closing comments completely in order to preserve their good standing / credibility. The loudest among their commenters are truly whackadoos and drown out the voices of the moderate and rational commenters.
What a downright shame.

And then I found this in my website… a little pin by Deepak Chopra – guru of spirituality himself. The pin hooks into your ear phone and talks about Mastering the Law of Attraction. I need a translator for this guy-I never know what exactly he is talking about. If anyone here is in that market, I think it is a better investment than Beyonce’s perfume. Personally, I think most perfumes are gross – most people “bath” in them which makes it doubly gross.

The loud Limbaugh and Gingrich fans post a lot more words, but there are a lot of people reading and occasionally posting that still support Hillary’s issues. Imo it’s worthwhile to keep some liberal/Hillary presence there.

It isn’t the limbaugh/gingrich support, it’s way beyond that.
I mean look at that one comment I posted above… it’s really typical of the skewed assumptions they jump to in order to silence any opposing view. They seem to post their paranoid assumptions as fact. That may also go a long way to understanding the reason they think everyone else is doing the same… it’s called projection.
I don’t have the stomach, nor the wherewithall, to comment there, too much dross. I don’t even post links to His44′s posts any more because of the right-wing paranoid yappers over there. The comments undermine the actual posts.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/03/10/rush-limbaugh-scandal-proves-contagious-for-talk-radio-advertisers.html
Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”
This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.
Valerie Geller, an industry insider and author of Beyond Powerful Radio, confirmed the trend. “I have talked with several reps who report that they’re having conversations with their clients, who are asking not to be associated with specifically polarizing controversial hosts, particularly if those hosts are ‘mean-spirited.’

I don’t know about you Puma’s here, but I see women as women, not Democrat or Republican. Just Women. If we are to hunt down these egotistical misogynistic men who think it is OK to call us the worst kind of names, we need to do it ALL across the board. It is NOT ok or less offensive if a Democrat calls a Republican woman horrific names because a Republican woman deserves it. NO woman deserves it. FYI, I don’t like Limbaugh and while I think he is a closet woman hater, I think there are others on the Democratic side that seems to get away with it because they are “comedians”.

Washington (CNN) — A controversial new Texas law requiring voters to present personal identification before going to the polls has been blocked by the Obama administration.
In a letter Monday to state officials, the Justice Department said the legislation could have a discriminatory effect on Hispanics and other minorities.*
Texas is among eight states to require official photo identification in an effort to stop what officials say is voter fraud. Opponents of the laws say they disenfranchise poor, minority and disabled voters.”

Third female lawmaker introduces bill to limit men’s Viagra access
Democratic Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner is the third female lawmaker to introduce a bill that would limit men’s access to Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs to make a statement about the dozens of anti-abortion bills that have passed statehouses around the country over the last year.
Turner is opposed to a proposed bill that would prohibit abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can happen as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. The Dayton Daily News reports that Turner’s bill would mandate that men seeking Viagra be “tested for heart problems, receive counseling about possible side effects and receive information about ‘pursuing celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.’”
Turner said on MSNBC Monday that the bill is about showing “men as much love in the reproductive health arena as they have shown us over the years. My Senate Bill 307 is all about the love and making sure we look out for men’s sexual health.”…
According to the abortion rights group the Guttmacher Institute, a record-breaking 92 new abortion-restricting laws were passed in 2011. Two of those laws mandated that women have ultrasounds and look at the images before being allowed to get an abortion.

However, my opinion is that people like Sharpton, they get noticed – BIG time. They are consistent for civil (Black American) rights. Everytime someone even mentions anything that can be construed as a slur against a Black person, he is there all over the mainstream media..You can’t miss his right on target message – don’t mess with us ! Women need that and they need to be for women across the board. Democrat women are no lesser women than Republican and Republican women are no lesser women then Democrat. Sharpton doesn’t focus on Gender or Party affiliation (I think, though I cannot vouch for Party affiliation).

With the exception of a few raucous years way back when, women have tried all of what you’ve suggested above, and the powers that be almost depend on us being that way. You see where that has gotten us over the past 40+ years. FORTY PLUS YEARS… and that’s just in my lifetime. Two thirds of my lifetime, as a matter of fact.
I’ll be damned if I want women who are 50 and under, and girls, all girls, to have to keep on fighting these tired old battles. I want them, all of them, to live up to their fullest potential, without being fettered, blocked, and challenged every step of the way by the lesser among us.
And I want boys to learn that there are other ways to live, cooperatively, for one, to co-exist with girls and women. I want both boys/men and girls/women to support and celebrate each other instead of competing with, blocking, defeating, and obstructing girls/women in order to secure some imaginary proof of “manhood” and “superiority” over girls and women. I mean, it’s obviously over-compensating for what they know they lack, but it has a restictive effect on all of our lives.
LOUD AND PROUD! Make noise. Call them out on every sexist / misogynist act, statement, law, etc. That’s my preference.

Goofsmom,
I think I’d rather see all conscious women speaking up. When there’s only one or two, or even a handful, they are easy targets for characterization, as in the cases of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and easily dismissed, Gloria Allred is another example. When the voices come from thousands, the stance becomes more difficult to stereotype and dismiss.
DancesWithPumas 03.16.12 at 10:59 am
gojoy,
I abandoned my boycott of TV and began watching several months ago, although I limit myself to weather reports and The Big Bang Theory. Occasionally I watch TMZ (one giant circle jerk) and Law and Order.
On my commute home (two miles) I tune into a conservative station and listen to that for the 15 minute commute. I consider that my cardio-vascular exercise for the day. Once in a while I catch Rush Limbaugh… but I can tolerate him for only 2 or three minutes in any given month.
Even with this minimal amount of exposure I tend to overdose on the arguing, manipulation, half-truths, propaganda. I can’t imagine it as a steady diet for any length of time. To some degree, I understand how it must feel from your point of view.
For Lent, in a non-religious way, I tried to give up politics/political news. I failed, of course, but I have cut way back, and I’m no longer as involved in the frustration and anger of mainstream politics, save as it effects women’s rights and equality. I feel better on many levels and I’m not quite as instantly excitable now.
Best wishes to you for a creative, prosperous, serene season working season.

…I don’t know about you Puma’s here, but I see women as women, not Democrat or Republican. Just Women. If we are to hunt down these egotistical misogynistic men who think it is OK to call us the worst kind of names, we need to do it ALL across the board….
—————————————————————–
Hi Freddie
Did you see the article (Rush Limbaugh Isn’t the Only Media Misogynist) below by Kirsten Powers (Democrat – Hillary supporter)? So refreshing to see someone, like yourself, who has the courage to condemn the misogynists on the left as well as those on the right. She, you and others here, have my respect for seeing beyond a political label and looking out for ALL women.
[Did you know there is a war on women?
Yes, it’s true. Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, Matt Taibbi, and Ed Schultz have been waging it for years with their misogynist outbursts. There have been boycotts by people on the left who are outraged that these guys still have jobs. Oh, wait. Sorry, that never happened.
Boycotts are reserved for people on the right like Rush Limbaugh, …………………(3-4 pages recounting despicable incidents we all remember, with links) ……..
It’s time for some equal-opportunity accountability. Without it, the fight against media misogyny will continue to be perceived as a proxy war for the Democratic Party, not a fight for fair treatment of women in the public square.]

Dances,
#148 – Excellent point. Many womens voices raised for all women. How does it happen outside blogs? Can’t be BTR either, has to get their attention and in a big way.
Writing is passive and can be easily ignored. An occasion movie doesn’t get viewed, it’s not hip enough for all. I’ve been wracking my brain for an idea.
The message has been diffused and muted. To many ways to communicate that aren’t face to face and the humanity of women becomes a line on a blog that is ignored. Makes me grumpy.
We don’t need men to join our cause, we need women too. Sigh…

Good for Kristen! Let’s put these Democratic pigs on the list.
But in war, sometimes it’s good to concentrate your fire power on one target at a time. Spread it too widely, and no target gets hurt. Right now while we’ve got the fire power, let’s eliminate Limbaugh once and for all, like Beck.
Seeing Limbaugh go down permanently, will put the fear of Goddess into the others — AND THEIR ADVERTISERS — making them fold sooner when it’s their turn.

TDO, if you’re around…
The past couple of days have seemed some civility on H44… so, as I was shredding bills, I began reading the comments… THEN, as if crashing into a brick wall, this, out of nowhere:
Mrs. Smith
March 18th, 2012 at 2:49 pm
Just a thought for those inclined to see a similarity.
TD meets a very pregnant woman at the Mall. They strike up a conversation. TD says, “do you know what you are having?”- The woman says, “yes, I’m having a girl.” To the ordinary person, a most innocuous statement. TD proceeds with, “half of that baby belongs to someone else. Are you aware of that?”- “You didn’t mention the father when you responded to my question…” and on and on and on…. I shan’t go on…
————
The Mouth just can’t let it go!!
I guess she can’t stand having anyone challenge or question outrageous statements. Every time someone has challenged you, you’ve brought back links and direct quotes. Sorry to say that can’t be said of the SmithBasil right-wingers.
I can’t even post links on facebook to H44′s great articles because the majority of the comments are so whack. Of course, the majority of the comments are made by a small percentage of comments who tend to dominate the blog and bully those who counter their right-wing sky is falling crap.
Shame. SAhame. Shame, the hard and excellent work of h44 admins is undermined by Big Mouthed. Wonder why they don’ just start their own blog instead of derailing H44? You gotta wonder who the trolls really are. Interestingly enough, those who are more akin to Hillary’s mindset are often called ou as trolls!
Oh well, guess it’s not time to go back into the water, especially since it’s polluted and corrosive still.

No doubt their ports of call wll all be in American coastal cities given heir holier-than-thou level of patriotism, toxic xenophobia and racism, concerns about the US economy and levels of unemployment, and their criticisms of Mrs Obama’s trip to Spain…when she could have been spending all that money in the USA.

Good long take-down by BRISTOL PALIN.
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/bristolpalin/2012/03/mr-president-when-should-i-expect-your-call/
What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?
freddiebrown 03.19.12 at 2:15 pm
Turndownobama – Thanks for sharing the link to Bristol Palin:
I wanted to put it out here in case folks don’t click on it and it would be a shame because I feel it is all too true:
Dear President Obama,
You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next. You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:
“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said. “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”
And I totally agree your kids should be able to speak their minds and engage the culture. I look forward to seeing what good things Malia and Sasha end up doing with their lives.
But here’s why I’m a little surprised my phone hasn’t rung. Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family. He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.” (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past – very public — mistakes.)
If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you. After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager. That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.
Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you. Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women. You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.
But…
What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?
I’m not expecting your SuperPAC to return the money. You’re going to need every dime to hang on to your presidency. I’m not even really expecting a call. But would it be too much to expect a little consistency? After all, you’re President of all Americans, not just the liberals.

here is on for my record book. I was fired last night 20 minutes before quitting time. He actually said that when he hired the 4 “young ones”(4 21,22 year old males)He decided after they were trained they would let me go. then quickly added the internet sales were not what they expected….
okay I was salesperson of the month 9 out of 12 months and sales person of the year…… and to top it off I sold 2 cars yesterday. No one else sold anything. I am in such shock, I cannot even move. It is like I am paralyzed. I guess I am officiall too old to be of any good to anyone.

Haven’t read this but for those who may be interested:
From the author:
“I haven’t posted here in a while, but I just wanted to let you know my novel/political thriller based on the 2008 election is available on Amazon and should be on Barnes & Noble soon. The e-book is $5.99. You might also see it advertised on Daily Caller, Town Hall, NoQuarter and other sites. If you would check it out, and spread the word to other HRC supporters I would really appreciate it. Here’s the description:
“Set against the background of epic dislocation in the financial markets and a supine media, “Admit The Horse” is a gripping political thriller about a dark-horse political candidate whose meteoric rise to the pinnacle of power is engineered amidst illegal campaign contributions, voter fraud and murder. The story’s unlikely players–an honorable Chicago detective, a retired DEA investigator, an idealistic venture capitalist, an African-American congresswoman and a suburban mom volunteering for his opponent–all begin to wonder: was his opportunistic rise to the Presidency all just coincidence…or conspiracy?””

prplvette85 – I’m so sorry to hear that. It is SO Fricking wrong and I would pitch in $100 to help you get a lawyer if you want to go that route. I think first try your local labor office and see what they say. Age discrimination is what you were handed … especially when he told you that crap. You did nothing wrong and I would also go to the un-employment office to file so you have some income ASAP. Sometimes they last as long as 1 1/2 years to 2 years if you file for extension. I learnt a thing or two from listening to people I try to hire – but depends on your state.
Working in the corporate world in the past, I have seen so many of these cases. Older co-workers let go after many years of service when they’re in their 50′s. That was why I made it my goal to have my own business by age 45, come hell or high water.

I would put my iphone with ringer off and start recording…even if you don’t use the recording, you would have it if you need it.

Good thinking. Might talk to some advocates, lawyers, etc first, to get some ideas what questions to ask. The lawyers who advertise a lot in the phone book will often give a lot of general background and advice over the phone — probably on their cells while commuting.
I bought a great little recorder a few years for secretly recording a confrontation, and it worked great. A tenant had a stroke and started accusing me of crazy stuff, so I got this and put it in my pants pocket. Right in the middle of a community center luncheon he stood up and accused me of poisoning the well, cutting his brake lines, and carrying a gun! And I got every word, loud and clear, and transferred it to a CD and played it for the judge.

Good Morning. Thank you all for your help. I was awake all night thinking of what to do. I am taking all of your advice. I am on my way to file a claim at the EEOC this morning. I am also calling my lawyer to see what steps to take. I am also going to all the Ford dealers that were my competitors to see if they have an opening. I have every single newspaper that my picture was in as salesperson of the month. They do an auto section once a month, with the top salespeople from the 12 local car dealerships. I might just go to a competitive brand too. I have sold other brands in the past so I will do whatever it takes. I just cannot be without a job again. It took a year last time to find a job. I cannot let that happen as I used all my savings last time to make it through.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks to you all for your support. It’s nice to talk to someone who actually cares and knows what it’s like as a woman to go through this.

prplvette85 – If you have such a good track record and you know you have done nothing wrong I hope you take them to task. Keep all your newspaper cuttings. Where I go get my auto is a very large lot and I don’t believe I have ever seen a woman sales person – it is very male centric. Hopefully, they have paid you. If they have not..don’t say anything until before 30 days. Then go to the labor office. Good Luck and don’t back down.

Prplvette85,
Gee, it sound like they are firing a high performing senior female. I sure hope they do not intend to replace you with men of lesser qualifications.
I had quite an experience with our judicial system on discrimination. Of course, that was in Texas during the Bush years. Not only did I have to get my lawyer and play a tape of my supervisor sexually harassing me to get it through the EEOC there, but after a year or so of having the case scheduled for trial, the judge, out of no where, threw the case out on “summary judgement”. Half the federal judiciary there has an interest in the business of the opposing party (Oil&Gas), but there is bubkis you can do about it. None of them recuse. And, by law, they do not have to. I filed misconduct complaints and went to the USSC twice.
My advice on all this is: Check out your judges and make sure they do not have interests in the opposing party. I mean, these guys are so blatant that they list it in their Financial Disclosure Reports. If you have trouble getting reports, these people can help: http://www.judicialwatch.org/courts/us-court-appeals-9th-circuit/
And I left the engineering/petrochemicals industry because it was so hostile to women and returned to a more friendly sector about 5 years ago. Guess what? Although the organization is diverse, my department is male-dominated. And I have multiple kinds of lawsuits against them, too. It is a shame that a woman cannot keep a good job without hiring a lawyer.
Keep fighting. Document. Speak up. And if you don’t get a fair deal, sue the fuckers. Win, lose or draw. I think of my daughter. All my daughters.

Good morning everyone. I have filled out my complaint with the EEOC. I have not mailed it as yet. I also contacted an attorney, have not heard from him yet.
I was going through my emails, and found one where the owner was on the chat on the website, a box would come up where customers could online chat with me regarding cars. The Saturday before I was fired, JR, the owners son was on chat pretending to be a customer interested in a Mustang. he was asking technical questions, which I was answering then he said “are you married” to which I responded “what does that matter, you are buying a car not a wife”. It was then I heard laughter from his office, which was right behind me. I went in there and it was him online. I did not think about it until this morning. I looked in my email, as all transcripts are forwarded to my personal email, which they did not know. It was so I could keep in constant touch with my customers. every line on the transcript has a time. the line where he asked me if I was married is gone, but not my response! you can see the time line and that something is missing.
I am keeping it for my lawyer. He can get the original transcript I am sure! I also notice that they no longer have the chat box when you go onto the website now. They replaced me with a 21 year old male with no auto experience at all.
I applied for a job at another Ford dealership yesterday. I told them what happened and they were as shocked as I. They saw my picture in the paper every month, so they know I am not lying. I am hoping to get the job, they seemed very interested, and said they had to do my background check and drivers license check and get back to me within 4 days!. I am not going to sue right away, and I am certainly not saying anything on fb. I know they are watching. They have not paid me yet, not for 2 weeks, next pay period. They owe me my vacation pay. I also won 500.00 for salesperson of they year, but I don’t know if they will forward that to me because it comes from the Post Tribune Newspaper. Also I won another 350.00 in employee excellence program through Ford. I will have to talk to my attorney about all of this. My daughter’s H.R. person called me last night and said if I do file suit file against Paul Heuring and Ford, that they will want to settle out of court fast! I will ask my attorney.
I am not backing down on this one.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: Well, the cost [of cutting aid to contraception] is financial, the cost is in women’s lives, the cost is to undermine what many of the very same opponents claim is their priority, namely to prevent abortions
[....]
Family planning is the best way we have to prevent unintended pregnancies and abortion [....] numerous studies have shown that the incidence of abortions decreases when women have access to contraception.

Not in the state of Missouri. Each party decides how they want to handle their elections. The Missouri State Democratic Party will not give those list to anyone they themselves don’t hand pick to run. They do not approve of me because they did not hand pick me and I did not wait my turn.
They are mad because I dare run before those in the State Senate and House get to run for US Senate or Congress. Also Mr. Clay and family own CD01 seat as far as the DNC and State Democratic Party are concerned.
I will do my best to get my name out I have plans in place to accomplish that. I like every candidate need donations to get my name out.

Dirty Words on Clean Skin: The Real War on Women

“In 2008, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama waged an epic battle for the presidential nomination that captured the imagination and hopes of millions, but the joy of watching a qualified woman vie for the presidency was marred by newsmen and pundits calling Hillary Clinton a hellish housewife, Nurse Ratched, she-devil and bitch. What I witnessed made the bile rise in my throat from such a deep place, I had to get off the sidelines and take action. I transformed from actor and fearful news junkie to determined campaign grunt and citizen journalist.
DIRTY WORDS ON CLEAN SKIN is my shocking exposé about the real war on women…who’s buying, who’s selling, and why they get away with it.”
::::snip::::
DIRTY WORDS ON CLEAN SKIN transcends party politics and goes far beyond the treatment of one woman to examine the cost of denying equal respect to all women.
DIRTY WORDS ON CLEAN SKIN is available for purchase today on Amazon and soon on Kindle as well. The official book launch will be April 24th. I am so pleased to make it available early for my readers. You have encouraged me, taught me to stand up, to make an argument, and most of all, to understand that my principles are more important than being liked.
I am grateful to you all. Thank you so much for your support of my work!

The Mighty Mathematician You’ve Never Heard Of
By NATALIE ANGIER
Scientists are a famously anonymous lot, but few can match in the depths of her perverse and unmerited obscurity the 20th-century mathematical genius Amalie Noether.
Albert Einstein called her the most “significant” and “creative” female mathematician of all time, and others of her contemporaries were inclined to drop the modification by sex. She invented a theorem that united with magisterial concision two conceptual pillars of physics: symmetry in nature and the universal laws of conservation. Some consider Noether’s theorem, as it is now called, as important as Einstein’s theory of relativity; it undergirds much of today’s vanguard research in physics, including the hunt for the almighty Higgs boson. Yet Noether herself remains utterly unknown, not only to the general public, but to many members of the scientific community as well.
When Dave Goldberg, a physicist at Drexel University who has written about her work, recently took a little “Noether poll” of several dozen colleagues, students and online followers, he was taken aback by the results. “Surprisingly few could say exactly who she was or why she was important,” he said. “A few others knew her name but couldn’t recall what she’d done, and the majority had never heard of her.”
Noether (pronounced NER-ter) was born in Erlangen, Germany, 130 years ago this month. So it’s a fine time to counter the chronic neglect and celebrate the life and work of a brilliant theorist whose unshakable number love and irrationally robust sense of humor helped her overcome severe handicaps — first, being female in Germany at a time when most German universities didn’t accept female students or hire female professors, and then being a Jewish pacifist in the midst of the Nazis’ rise to power.
Through it all, Noether was a highly prolific mathematician, publishing groundbreaking papers, sometimes under a man’s name, in rarefied fields of abstract algebra and ring theory. And when she applied her equations to the universe around her, she discovered some of its basic rules, like how time and energy are related, and why it is, as the physicist Lee Smolin of the Perimeter Institute put it, “that riding a bicycle is safe.”
Ransom Stephens, a physicist and novelist who has lectured widely on Noether, said, “You can make a strong case that her theorem is the backbone on which all of modern physics is built.”

Here is the latest press I received from STLToday . Not flattering compared to my other two opponents. I wonder if it is because I am a woman or because I am not rich?
“A third Democrat, Candice Britton, who lost to Clay by a wide margin in the 2010 primary, also has entered the race to represent the merged district.”
They forgot to mention my name is first on the ballot! I thought 20% was great for an unknown first time out candidate!

Casper, Congratulations on your new book! I will order it as soon as I get another paycheck.
I got my new job today!! A bigger and better Ford/Lincoln/Mazda dealership! Woot!! Better commissions, and I can sell all 3 brands, plus the used cars. I get a new Demo and money for all accessories I sell. I am sooooo excited! The woman who always told me “I have your back” tried to give me a bad reference! She had my back alright with a knife twisted in it! But it didn’t work. The new dealership said my record spoke for itself, the looked me up in the Ford Database, and also saw all my salesperson of the month pics in the local papers!! they were not hiring, but are making space for me!
Thank you all for your support! and I still am filing suit against them as soon as I pick up my last paycheck!. What is funny is my name still pops up on their website lol. I ran into one of my customers at the grocery store and he told me he was there on Monday and they told him I quit! He is coming to buy a new car from me at the new place as soon as I call him to tell him I have the new job!!

Meanwhile, CONGRATULATIONS on the new job!! It’s super that your stellar reputation preceeds you! You won’t have to kill yourself trying to prove yourself. All in all the new job sounds so much better (and potentially more lucrative) than the last one. Go sell ‘em, girl!!

Thank you all! Every time I come to this home it gives me inspiration to fight on. I started to go to that dark place of insecurity, putting myself down all those things other people put on you when you are a woman, especially an aging woman in a young womans world, combined with a job that is filled with men, sometimes a very tough place to be.
You all give me back perspective of why we unite. We need to teach the young women, and excell over the men. I remember a favorite saying of mine, beauty may fade but stupidity is forever! No way am I going to give in to the stupidity of others, and the labels they try to put on me or any of us.
Thanks again. You all mean so much to me.

A Poet of Unswerving Vision at the Forefront of Feminism
By MARGALIT FOX
Adrienne Rich, a poet of towering reputation and towering rage, whose work — distinguished by an unswerving progressive vision and a dazzling, empathic ferocity — brought the oppression of women and lesbians to the forefront of poetic discourse and kept it there for nearly a half-century, died on Tuesday at her home in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was 82.
The cause was complications of rheumatoid arthritis, with which she had lived for most of her adult life, her family said.
Widely read, widely anthologized, widely interviewed and widely taught, Ms. Rich was for decades among the most influential writers of the feminist movement and one of the best-known American public intellectuals. She wrote two dozen volumes of poetry and more than a half-dozen of prose; the poetry alone has sold nearly 800,000 copies, according to W. W. Norton & Company, her publisher since the mid-1960s.
Triply marginalized — as a woman, a lesbian and a Jew — Ms. Rich was concerned in her poetry, and in her many essays, with identity politics long before the term was coined.
She accomplished in verse what Betty Friedan, author of “The Feminine Mystique,” did in prose. In describing the stifling minutiae that had defined women’s lives for generations, both argued persuasively that women’s disenfranchisement at the hands of men must end.
For Ms. Rich, the personal, the political and the poetical were indissolubly linked; her body of work can be read as a series of urgent dispatches from the front. While some critics called her poetry polemical, she remained celebrated for the unflagging intensity of her vision, and for the constant formal reinvention that kept her verse — often jagged and colloquial, sometimes purposefully shocking, always controlled in tone, diction and pacing — sounding like that of few other poets.
All this helped ensure Ms. Rich’s continued relevance long after she burst genteelly onto the scene as a Radcliffe senior in the early 1950s.
Her constellation of honors includes a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 1994 and a National Book Award for poetry in 1974 for “Diving Into the Wreck.” That volume, published in 1973, is considered her masterwork.
In the title poem, Ms. Rich uses the metaphor of a dive into dark, unfathomable waters to plumb the depths of women’s experience:
I am here, the mermaid whose dark hair
streams black, the merman in his armored body
We circle silently about the wreck
we dive into the hold. …
We are, I am, you are
by cowardice or courage
the one who find our way
back to the scene
carrying a knife, a camera
a book of myths
in which
our names do not appear.
Ms. Rich was far too seasoned a campaigner to think that verse alone could change entrenched social institutions. “Poetry is not a healing lotion, an emotional massage, a kind of linguistic aromatherapy,” she said in an acceptance speech to the National Book Foundation in 2006, on receiving its medal for distinguished contribution to American letters. “Neither is it a blueprint, nor an instruction manual, nor a billboard.”
But at the same time, as she made resoundingly clear in interviews, in public lectures and in her work, Ms. Rich saw poetry as a keen-edged beacon by which women’s lives — and women’s consciousness — could be illuminated.
She was never supposed to have turned out as she did.
Adrienne Cecile Rich was born in Baltimore on May 16, 1929. Her father, Arnold Rice Rich, a doctor and assimilated Jew, was an authority on tuberculosis who taught at Johns Hopkins University. Her mother, Helen Gravely Jones Rich, a Christian, was a pianist and composer who, cleaving to social norms of the day, forsook her career to marry and have children. Adrienne was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church.
Theirs was a bookish household, and Adrienne, as she said afterward, was groomed by her father to be a literary prodigy. He encouraged her to write poetry when she was still a child, and she steeped herself in the poets in his library — all men, she later ruefully observed. But those men gave her the formalist grounding that let her make her mark when she was still very young.
When Ms. Rich was in her last year at Radcliffe (she received a bachelor’s degree in English there in 1951), W. H. Auden chose her first collection, “A Change of World,” for publication in the Yale Younger Poets series, a signal honor. Released in 1951, the book, with its sober mien, dutiful meter and scrupulous rhymes, was praised by reviewers for its impeccable command of form.
She had learned the lessons of her father’s library well, or so it seemed. For even in this volume Ms. Rich had begun, with subtle subversion, to push against a time-honored thematic constraint — the proscription on making poetry out of the soul-numbing dailiness of women’s lives.
A poem in the collection, “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers,” depicting a woman at her needlework and reprinted here in full, is concerned with precisely this:
Aunt Jennifer’s tigers prance across a screen,
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.
Aunt Jennifer’s fingers fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand.
When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.
The tigers in the panel that she made
Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid.
Once mastered, poetry’s formalist rigors gave Ms. Rich something to rebel against, and by her third collection, “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law,” published by Harper & Row, she had pretty well exploded them. That volume appeared in 1963, a watershed moment in women’s letters: “The Feminine Mystique” was also published that year.
In the collection’s title poem, Ms. Rich chronicles the pulverizing onus of traditional married life. It opens this way:
You, once a belle in Shreveport,
with henna-colored hair, skin like a peachbud,
still have your dresses copied from that time. …
Your mind now, mouldering like wedding-cake,
heavy with useless experience, rich
with suspicion, rumor, fantasy,
crumbling to pieces under the knife-edge
of mere fact.
Though the book horrified some critics, it sealed Ms. Rich’s national reputation.
She knew the strain of domestic duty firsthand. In 1953 Ms. Rich had married a Harvard economist, Alfred Haskell Conrad, and by the time she was 30 she was the mother of three small boys. When Professor Conrad took a job at the City College of New York, the family moved to New York City, where Ms. Rich became active in the civil rights and antiwar movements.
By 1970, partly because she had begun, inwardly, to acknowledge her erotic love of women, Ms. Rich and her husband had grown estranged. That autumn, he died of a gunshot wound to the head; the death was ruled a suicide. To the end of her life, Ms. Rich rarely spoke of it.
Ms. Rich effectively came out as a lesbian in 1976, with the publication of “Twenty-One Love Poems,” whose subject matter — sexual love between women — was still considered disarming and dangerous. In the years that followed her poetry and prose ranged over her increasing self-identification as a Jewish woman, the Holocaust and the struggles of black women.
Ms. Rich’s other volumes of poetry include “The Dream of a Common Language” (1978), “A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far” (1981), “The Fact of a Doorframe” (1984), “An Atlas of the Difficult World” (1991) and, most recently, “Tonight No Poetry Will Serve,” published last year.
Her prose includes the essay collections “On Lies, Secrets, and Silence” (1979); “Blood, Bread, and Poetry” (1986); an influential essay, “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” published as a slender volume in 1981; and the nonfiction book “Of Woman Born” (1976), which examines the institution of motherhood as a socio-historic construct.
For Ms. Rich, the getting of literary awards was itself a political act to be reckoned with. On sharing the National Book Award for poetry in 1974 (the other recipient that year was Allen Ginsberg), she declined to accept it on her own behalf. Instead, she appeared onstage with two of that year’s finalists, the poets Audre Lorde and Alice Walker; the three of them accepted the award on behalf of all women.
In 1997, in a widely reported act, Ms. Rich declined the National Medal of Arts, the United States government’s highest award bestowed upon artists. In a letter to Jane Alexander, then chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts, which administers the award, she expressed her dismay, amid the “increasingly brutal impact of racial and economic injustice,” that the government had chosen to honor “a few token artists while the people at large are so dishonored.”
Art, Ms. Rich added, “means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power which holds it hostage.”
Ms. Rich’s other laurels — and these she did accept — include the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, the Academy of American Poets Fellowship and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.
She taught widely, including at Columbia, Brandeis, Rutgers, Cornell and Stanford Universities.
Ms. Rich’s survivors include her partner of more than 30 years, the writer Michelle Cliff; three sons, David, Pablo and Jacob, from her marriage to Professor Conrad; a sister, Cynthia Rich; and two grandchildren.
For all her verbal prowess, for all her prolific output, Ms. Rich retained a dexterous command of the plain, pithy utterance. In a 1984 speech she summed up her reason for writing — and, by loud unspoken implication, her reason for being — in just seven words.
What she and her sisters-in-arms were fighting to achieve, she said, was simply this: “the creation of a society without domination.”

Did you all know that Suze Ormond (money matters guru) is gay? She told Piers Morgan that the biggest defining event in her life was when she met – I forgot what her name was. I love Suze Ormond – she says it as it should be said.

It must be so good.

So glad you did it.
