Gotta LOVE that HAT!!
Daaaahhhhraaaagh,
This is rahther personal but I’ve been meaning to tell you…
You meandered into my thoughts last week, which is not unusual in and of itself but, this time it was different. Normally my thoughts about you are about you, regardless if they’re an appreciation of who you are, and have been, or if I’m pondering something you’ve shared, or trying to glean the wisdom of one or another of your statements, or poems, or viewpoints, or I might be steaming over (while re-enacting a counter-argument) a miscommunication, or a spilled coke (geez (and thankfully), we havent had a good arguement in *years* now!)).
This time, though, it was about me (me, me, me. It’s always about ME!
) Or, rather, who I’ve become because of you. I want to thank you for the gifts you’ve given me, intentionally or not.
Without you, your generosity of spirit, encouragement, acceptance… I wouldn’t have the self-confidence, and, believe it or not, the sense of security I have today. Any self-assurance I’ve gained over the past few years (my god… FIVE years??!! No, it can’t be! Has it been 5 years??) is all due to you.
So, as I celebrate your birthday, I’m also celebrating that in me which you have given birth to; this community you’ve created; acquaintances I enjoy and appreciate on many levels; the friends I have made here; and your family, family… a sense of which I haven’t experienced in far too long.
I don’t even know how to begin to thank you, Murphy.
Sorry this comment is so long, it’s just that… I’ve been meaning to tell you.
Happy, happy birthday, pal.

Another fluffy feather in our bonnet…If any one is so inclined , you can see one of our bags in the current March issue of Oprah magazine. Check it out on page 92 when you’re standing in line at the grocery store.. They took two more of our bags off our display when we were in NY last week – keeping fingers and toes crossed that they will feature it. Whoooo Hooo.

Have a Very Happy Birthday Murphy.
Dances – your message to Murphy is sentimental and beautiful.
freddiebrown – I will check out the magazine the next time I am in the library. Probably tomorrow. Congratulations again.

Murphy,
I cannot tell you how much you have enriched my life, and the lives of so many others. You have opened the door of communication to so many, it started off as one thing we all had in common and still do and that is our love and respect of Hillary Clinton. This Puma home that you created has come to mean so much more. We are a sisterhood unlike no other, thanks to you. I love you. We love you. Thank you again, and I hope you have the best birthday ever!
gojoyknocks 02.10.12 at 9:58 am
Happy Birthday Murphy, with a shout out to Mama who raised you and the Sisters of Saint Joseph who educated you. Well done.
murphy 02.10.12 at 10:08 am
Holy Smokes, Pumas I am crying right now! Thank you for such heart warming sentiments on my birthday. Just have to say that anything I’ve given to you all over the years has been MORE THAN reciprocated by what you’ve given me — friendship, humor, loyalty, fierce opinions, financial and emotional support to me and to others in need. I cannot believe we are going on 5 years. Knowing you all, reading your opinions and thoughts, and learning about your lives has made me a much better person — more thoughtful, less close-minded, more compassionate. You make me so proud to be an American (seriously) and even prouder to be a woman.
Thank YOU.
murphy 02.10.12 at 10:10 am
Gojoy, very true. I heard yesterday that Sister Ursalina, a looong time teacher at St Ann’s, died yesterday. She was well into her 90′s. Probably taught for more than 60 years.

Quelle surprise: obama “concedes” the birth control issue to the Catholic church.
What a bunch of phony baloney he is.

attack on Catholics, my ass!!
No one is FORCING Catholics to do anything. This is about something being offered in all health care insurance policies. If the use of contraception is against that persons religious belief system that person simply chooses not to go get a prescription and ingest it. What this IS doing, is insisting that contraception be covered in the businesses OWNED and/or OPERATED by a non-taxpaying/government subsidized (in most cases) business. All the bookkeepers, doctors, nurses, professors, janitors, etc etc that work in these businesses are not necessary members of the religion.
The Catholic church still has every right to preach it’s beliefs and make their case to their members.
oh, and btw, 28 states ALREADY require this (and have for years) and the Catholic Church owned/operated businesses already comply without the first bit of complaint. DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the nation has admitted to providing contraception coverage as part of its health care benefit package. Georgetown and the six former Caritas Christi Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, have also it as part of their health care packages, just to name a few
OPEN YOUR EYES!!! this is nothing more than the “right” trying to find yet another trumped up “we are being oppressed” mantra to yell from the roof tops.

Happy Birthday Murphy! : )
“this is nothing more than the “right” trying to find yet another trumped up “we are being oppressed” mantra to yell from the roof tops.”
Interesting huh, because I see this as nothing more than the “left” throwing women under the bus again in favor of attempting to create a narrative about Republicans. Catholics have been using contraception for ages and the vast majority of Catholic orgs already provide contraception in their insurance polices, so why poke a stick in their eye at this point? To make life better for women? No, to bring up a wedge issue just in time for the election.
The Party of women’s rights is at it again with the VAWA. This is an act that has been in affect for 15 yrs and has had bipartisan support. For crying out loud, George Bush signed it twice! Suddenly Republicans are against it. So what has changed? Apparently some moron decided to put language in there about transgendered people and illegal immigrants, almost guaranteeing Republican opposition. So why would you throw women under the bus and try to sabotage a popular bill? Why, so you can have an election year narrative that implies, Republicans support violence against women! Republicans want to ban birth control! Vote for me or they’ll be burning books in the street!
Color me completely bored and unimpressed.

(just to be used as an example)
kinda like this, if ones supposition is that republicans are beginning an attack on birth control, one might qualify that theory by listing the following
All 4 remaining republican candidates have signed on to the person hood amendment. (which could outlaw the pill) … and then site source

Happy Happy Birthday Dear Murphy!!
yttik 02.10.12 at 8:35 pm
Invalidresponse, site my sources for what? For my perception that the left plays politics with womens rights and is more interested in winning elections then in empowering women? It seems rather self explanatory to me, 28 states mandate contraception coverage in insurance polices already and have for years. The vast majority of Catholic orgs already provide contraception in their insurance polices. Women with insurance are already being provided with access to contraception. So why play these political games and poke Catholics in the eye until they start to fight back? For the benefit of women? I don’t think so. Catholic employees already have access to contraception. Now, thanks to Obama, by the time this is over, women who have had access all along, likely no longer will. Exactly as expected, Obama has already walked it back. Next congress will probably try to pass some bill actually banning contraception in insurance policies.
As to VAWA, which has passed with bipartisan support every time since it’s conception and has had Republican support and has been signed into law by Republican presidents, here’s an article discussing the sudden opposition to it:
“The main sticking points seemed to be language in the bill to ensure that victims are not denied services because they are gay or transgender and a provision that would modestly expand the availability of special visas for undocumented immigrants”
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/10/opinion/republicans-retreat-on-domestic-violence.html?_r=3
I worked on the VAWA. Watching Democrats use it to play politics really pisses me off. Again, who benefits from poking Republicans in the eye until they start to fight back and oppose a bill they’ve always supported in the past? Not women.
invalidresponse 02.10.12 at 8:38 pm
“the compromise”
The insurance companies are going to be required to pick up the tab.
Obama: “No woman’s health should depend on who she is, or where she works, or how much money she makes,” “Every woman should be in control of the decisions that affect her own health. Period.”
“But if a woman’s employer is a charity or a hospital that has a religious objection to providing contraceptive services as part of their health plan, the insurance company, not the hospital, not the charity, will be required to reach out and offer the woman contraceptive care free of charge.”
I’m good with that.
I’m sure the Republicans are going to hate it, because it will be tough to find fault in it. Surely, they won’t attempt “poor insurance companies”….will they??????
invalidresponse 02.10.12 at 8:58 pm
yttik 02.10.12 at 8:35 pm
OHHHHHHHHH, I see you are speaking of a different issue all together, thank you for clarifying.
But while you are on the subject, do you actually believe that victims that are gay, trans-gendered, or illegal immigrants should be denied services when they are victims of domestic violence?? You find it an “eye poke” to republicans that these people are granted services by police and other agencies?? Really?? and you call those that do believe these people should be covered by these services “morons”
very interesting,
just another “moron”
invalidresponse 02.10.12 at 9:05 pm
Just to qualify it, I am saying, by your definition, I am the “moron”. Proudly the “moron” for that matter. Just didn’t want it to be read wrong, and thought that I might be calling anyone names.
yttik 02.10.12 at 9:12 pm
“do you actually believe that victims that are gay, trans-gendered, or illegal immigrants should be denied services when they are victims of domestic violence??”
Do you have any evidence that they have been discriminated against with VAWA funds?? VAWA has always been one of the most diverse and non discriminatory bills ever written. Domestic violence/Sexual assault shelters were built by feminists, including lesbians, people who actually wrote the VAWA act. Thirty years ago, before VAWA was even conceived of, we were already serving gays, lesbians, transgendered people, and illegal immigrants. VAWA has been passed every single time for more than 15 yrs with bipartisan support. Why would you suddenly pick two hot button Republican wedge issues and spotlight them in the bill, unless you were hoping to poke Republicans in the eye so they would stop supporting it?
yttik 02.10.12 at 9:17 pm
Oh, and the only person I called a moron was the US congresscritter who decided to play politics with the bill. Unless you are a US congresscritter, I couldn’t have possibly called you a moron.

yttik 02.10.12 at 9:12 pm
So you believe that including gays, lesbians, transgendered, and illegal immigrants into the language of the bill quarantining their access to services is wrong??
So should “those people” just sit back in the corner, be quiet, and be happy for what they might get?? Just in case some Republicans find it to be a “poke in the eye” to include a minority in the equality of services. Or should “they” work to have their equality codified into law? Really you find this exceptable??
invalidresponse 02.10.12 at 9:33 pm
*guaranteeing not quarantining
but hey with how this conversation is going it might have just been Freudian slip

I am sure I will be reproached again for expressing my opinion, but I will do so nevertheless.
Contraceptives and morning after pills have very little to do with the current argument. The issue is whether or not obama has the right or authority to intrude himself into the inner workings of the Catholic Church or any other religious organization.
He does not! We are protected from such tyranny by the First Amendment which guarantees free speech and religious liberty to us all.
By this action, obama has stepped into the role of King Henry VIII. I now wait to see who will be our Thomas More.
