Catholic Baiting

in The War on Women

Looks like obama’s strategy of pretending to wage war on the catholic church in order to herd panicked and pissed off Catholics into the arms of Rick Santorum is paying off. Mitt Romney can beat obama. Newt Gingrich probably can too. Rick Santorum? When hell freezes over. For gawd’s sake even I would probably vote for obama in November if Santorum is the Republican nominee. The guy is a true blue FREAK of the highest degree. He is unabashedly opposed to contraception. (I linked to a right-wing site on purpose to show that even his ideological brothers don’t deny that Santorum’s stance toward birth control is radical.)

Pretty clever actually. Attack a group of people who have a strong sense of tribal identity with the Catholic church, whether because of ethnic identity or immigrant experience or religious upbringing and connections or, in probably most cases, all of the above, and BINGO! millions of otherwise moderate and modern, lackidaisically devout Catholics suddenly spring forth to defend their history and connections to their tribe against a vaguely non-denominational, religiously opaque president. Rick Santorum, Defender of the Faith of our Fathers.

Puke. It’s so transparent I’m shocked Catholics fell for it. Win-win for obama. If Santorum’s momentum continues to the nomination, obama faces a radical right winger whom independents and moderates won’t vote for and whom liberals and left wingers will be energized and determined to beat back. If all this does is humiliate and weaken Romney leading up to his eventual nomination, well that’s not too shabby either: Face a bloodied and humbled opponent in November. Yay!

And it IS a pretend war on Catholics. If the Santorum surge has legs obama will continue riling up Catholics with affronts to their traditions and institutions. It’s no coincidence that he kicked off a birth control skirmish on the field of Catholic universities. Even the most lapsed and liberal Catholic is reflexively defensive against incursions by the state into institutions they hold dear. When obama goes after the policies of places like Fordham and Boston College and Notre Dame it feels personal. It makes Catholics feel singled out and vulnerable to a pushy government. I mean, after all, 98% of Catholic women use birth control* (yes you read that right). For 35 years they’ve been able to reconcile their own personal behavior with the wacky and medieval tenets of a (supposedly) celibate priestly hierarchy. Catholics have no problemo with the church’s ban on contraception because, for goodness’ sake, they just IGNORE it!

Except for weirdos like Santorum. He is part of a teeny tiny minority of radical Catholic men who are fanatical followers of the ban. He doesn’t represent the views of 98% of Catholic women and men, but by gum if obama forces the majority of Catholics to rally around Santorum as a champion to defend their (extremely easily insulted) pride, they sure as hell will. They’ll vote for him out of spite. Some will vote for him out of fear that obama is sincere in this transparently phony war on Catholics.

And it IS a fake war. Just wait. As soon as his “war” on Catholics gets hot enough to burn him, he’ll back off. The feigned attack on the Catholic ban on birth control was cynical enough. His next move is to cave and grant the Church the exemption to mandated birth control insurance coverage they insist they have a first amendment right to. obama has NEVER intended to follow through on his demand that Catholic insurance providers offer coverage for birth control. He has merely been using the civil rights of American women as a pawn in his reelection strategy. How friggin cynical is that?

Don’t cry, Women. As long as we are profoundly under-represented in government at ALL levels of our society, as we are today, our rights WILL BE USED as bargaining chips and tactical ploys by the men who run our country. Race baiting is unacceptable in our national politics today. When candidates appear to even obliquely be relying on racism to get votes, they are excoriated by their opponents and in all corners of the media, and rightfully so. The baiting of religious groups is also offensive to most Americans, which is why obama’s intentional ploy to offend Catholics all the way to the voting booth to pull the lever for Santorum is so devious. When he called Pennsylvanians bitter clingers to their religion, obama was being his true, odiously elitist self. That was a gaffe. When he attacks Catholic policy on birth control, obama — or let’s be honest, Axelrod is the strategist here — is being Machiavellian. How pathetic is it that four years after the best American candidate for president in two generations – a woman — was hounded out of the race by sexist hounds from hell, American women are still so impotent and marginalized a voting bloc that we can be used like this? Actually, it’s no surprise at all, is it?

I’ll say it again: VOTE FOR WOMEN!

* Don’t believe that 98% of Catholic women use birth control? Look around you and believe your eyes. How many American women do you know with five or more children? With close to 40 million Catholic women in the United States, if they were NOT using birth control they’d be running around with 6,7, 8, 9, 10 kids like they used to when I was a kid back in the dark ages before the Pill. The average American family with children has 1.86 children. Face the facts: ALL women use birth control and Rick Santorum is a Bronze Age freak.

It’s an Obamanation. Believe it or not, the majority of Catholics are fairly moderate and look the other way when it comes to contraception. In my area most Catholic orgs already provide medical insurance that cover BC. But kiss all that goodbye! Because of Obama’s war on Catholics, Catholics will now move farther to the Right in solidarity and mutually felt persecution. For every action there is an equal reaction.

I would vote for Santorum based on the backlash principle. He would trigger resistance, sobriety from the blue kool aid that has plagued this country. Instead what we have is this Chosen One who cannot be held accountable, who can even authorize the execution of US citizens without ruffling any feathers. I used to vote for the lesser of evils, now I believe it’s a lot healthier for the people to have to confront the eviler of two lessers. By the time Obama is finished, this country will have moved so far to the Right it boggles the mind. Already we have flipped on choice so for the first time in decades we now have more people against it than for it. Santorum may be an SLP, but he would also help move this country back towards the middle simply based on backlash alone.

Yes, Obama will likely cave on the BC mandate and those Catholic insurance policies that do look the other way and provide BC, will now defiantly make sure they don’t. Either way, women will loose.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph– No truer words have ever been spoken. I often sit in Church and look around at the families. Many have an ‘extra’ child. Three or four instead of two. But even these families have them spaced three years apart and stop when the mother still looks kinda fertile to me!! There are also two or three ‘holy’ families as my not so holy family calls them. The mother sometimes wears a doily on her head, she home schools the children and they refuse to take the host into their hands. They make the priest put the host on their tongue. (Needless to say, they never come to me (a female Eucharist minister)or any lay minister at all, only the priest will do.) This is an incredibly small percent of the parishioners. Most of the parishioners vote Democratic, ignore the calls to go to Annapolis every legislative session and push for the ‘Catholic Agenda’, and know and love lots of Gay friends and family.

I am not sure that Catholics will really turn to Republicans over this. I think the Catholic vote mirrors the nation’s vote. I read somewhere that Catholics have voted with the majority in all recent elections. The Republican Catholics were never gonna vote for Obama and the Democratic Catholics were never gonna do anything else. I guess it is left to us swing Catholics once again. If the Catholic hierarchy overplays this (as they are prone to do), Catholics will see this for what it is– the Catholic paternalistic right wing agenda to keep women from exercising their Constitutionally protected right to reproductive choice.

Have I ranted on long enough??

I think people are losing sight of the real issue. It’s not about contraception or even really about the Catholic Church.

It is about obama playing dictator and disregarding the First Amendment which promises free speech and religious liberty for all.

If he gets away with this attack on Catholics, who knows who will be next?

Can you imagine what would happen if obama tried to force Muslims to serve pork in their Islamic Centers?

Oh it is not about anything to do with health or church or the first amendment.
It is all politics all the time, Chicago style dirty politics!

attack on Catholics, my ass!!

No one is FORCING Catholics to do anything. This is about something being offered in all health care insurance policies. If the use of contraception is against that persons religious belief system that person simply chooses not to go get a prescription and ingest it. What this IS doing, is insisting that contraception be covered in the businesses OWNED and/or OPERATED by a non-taxpaying/government subsidized (in most cases) business. All the bookkeepers, doctors, nurses, professors, janitors, etc etc that work in these businesses are not necessary members of the religion.

The Catholic church still has every right to preach it’s beliefs and make their case to their members.

oh, and btw, 28 states ALREADY require this (and have for years) and the Catholic Church owned/operated businesses already comply without the first bit of complaint. DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the nation has admitted to providing contraception coverage as part of its health care benefit package. Georgetown and the six former Caritas Christi Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, have also it as part of their health care packages, just to name a few

OPEN YOUR EYES!!! this is nothing more than the “right” trying to find yet another trumped up “we are being oppressed” mantra to yell from the roof tops.

This isn’t about religion, contraception, or making women’s lives better, this is about politics.Obama needs to create the narrative that Republicans want to ban birth control and only he can save us. By poking Catholics in the eye, he forces those Catholics who were already providing policies with contraception, to move farther to the right and become vocal about their opposition. Now he can say, “see those people want to ban birth control. Vote for me or contraception will be banned.”

Religious exemptions are an important part of our freedoms in this country. We have exemptions for immunizations, for education, for just about everything the Gov has mandated for “our own good” or the “common good.” That’s because people are individuals and bureaucracy and mandates are a one size fits all solution that doesn’t always fit. Immunizations for example are a great thing but there are some kids who should not have them for health reasons. Free public education is a marvelous thing, but there are some kids and families who need the freedom to opt out and provide their own education.

Regarding your comment – I would like to know what you mean by an ‘extra’ child. The term sounds ominous. Do you mean any child born after the second? Since I am the second oldest in my family, am I to assume that my four younger siblings are all ‘extras’? If so, what do you believe should have been done with them?

I have another question. Since you seem to spend your time in church gazing around and counting the number of children in each family, as well as checking out the females to see who may still be fertile, my question is why do you think it is any of your business?

Just asking.

FECK!

I have been working on updating the FEC complaint with the many revisions to the campaign reports. And their files are STILL FECKED UP! If it were not for these idiots thuggery, they would be nowhere. Agitation over race, religion and reproductive rights are about all these losers can do.

Quelle surprise: obama “concedes” the birth control issue to the Catholic church.

What a bunch of phony baloney he is.
