In support of wikipedia and other websites blacking themselves out today to protest the SOPA and PIP legislation, pumapac’s welcome page is black today. Enter your zip code to contact your reps and tell them to back off on corpogovernmental control of the internet. I for one do not admire China’s approach to internet policing.
Learn more about SOPA and PIP here and here.
And LOLZ but former senator Chris Dodd, currently a Hollywood lobbyist natch, is a big pusher of SOPA. He calls today’s blackout by wikipedia and others an “abuse of power.” The irony — it stings!
And get in touch with your inner American citizen today.

Thanks so much for this welcome page. For the last several days I’ve been so annoyed by the threat of this legislation.
I signed too.
I was hoping that I’d never have to see or hear the name Chris Dodd again once he left the senate. Not to be!

I suppose this is the perfect stunt for someone who lives in a staged, make-believe world and whose life is a fantasy:
http://www.mediaite.com/online/president-obama-to-shut-down-main-street-usa-in-disney-world-for-speech/
But if I had saved up the money and planned a trip to Disney World on this day for myself and my family, I’d be real PO’d!

Lawmakers withdraw support of anti-piracy bills after online protest
http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/19/tech/sopa-blackouts/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
DancesWithPumas 01.19.12 at 2:27 pm
The Wikimedia Foundation says it reached 162 million people with Wikipedia’s 24-hour English-language protest of the antipiracy bills. Of those, more than 8 million readers in the United States took the opportunity to look up contact information for their members of Congress through the site. Presumably, that generated tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of calls to congressional offices.
“The Wikipedia blackout is over and the public has spoken,” said Sue Gardner, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director. “You shut down the Congressional switchboards, and you melted their servers. Your voice was loud and strong.”
Google did not black out its entire site as Wikipedia did, but it still generated at least 13 million page views to its anti-SOPA page and got 7 million people to sign its petition.

Hey. Here’s an independent thinker, female and Democratic. Besides Hillary.
Democratic Senate recruit asks Obama to backpedal on Keystone pipeline –
A top Democratic recruit for the Senate is drawing a line in the sand on the Keystone XL pipeline, separating herself from President Obama in a state where the president’s favorability is underwater. Heidi Heitkamp, North Dakota’s former attorney general and the presumed Democratic nominee to replace retiring Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), sent a letter to Obama on Friday asking him to reverse course on the pipeline, which Obama announced Wednesday that he will block.“The Keystone pipeline would mean billions of dollars invested in our economy when we need it most, and tens of thousands of well-paid construction jobs at a time when too many Americans are out of work,” Heitkamp wrote. “It would bring new business opportunities for small businesses that would support this huge construction project, from gravel pits to Main Street diners.” The move by Heitkamp reflected the most palpable and clear-cut attempt by a major Democratic candidate to publicly create distance from Obama since the debate over healthcare reform. And it’s good politics in North Dakota, a major oil-producing state where opposition to the pipeline is a hard sell for Democrats. When Gallup polled the state in August, Obama’s approval rating stood at 37 percent, among the 10 states where Obama fared the worst. Heitkamp doubled down on her criticism of Obama in a Friday conference call with reporters where she said the president’s decision was an example of all that is wrong with modern politics….. [OUCH]

RIP Etta…
Etta James, whose powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the subtlest love songs, most indelibly in her signature hit, “At Last,” died Friday morning in Riverside, Calif. She was 73.

Our local press tribute to Miss Etta…
Etta James, the internationally renowned singer whose recording of “At Last” is among the most beloved Rhythm & Blues standards, has died at age 73 after more than a year of battling leukemia and other ailments. She was a longtime resident of the Riverside-area community of Woodcrest.
Her longtime manager Lupe DeLeon confirmed to media outlets that the singer had passed away. DeLeon said she died from complications from leukemia and was surrounded by her sons Donto and Sametto, and husband Artis Mills when she died in a Riverside hospital.
James would have celebrated her 74th birthday Wednesday.

I just watched Milk. Great movie. I love how at one point he says that losing the Prop 6 battle was expected, but the idea was to organize so well that there would be a lot of noise about the loss. Then I loved watching all those counties colored green!
And the Anita Bryant footage was frightening. Ugh. Listening to her was horrible.

From Hillary is 44 . . .
We’re sad. Etta James died today. Etta James was our kind of woman. What a lady! Etta James couldn’t stand Obama. We laughed ourselves silly in February 2009 when Etta James said:
“Your President. You know, the one with the big ears. He ain’t my President. He might be yours. He ain’t my President.”

I was living in Berkeley during that time. Tons of lesbians and gays, heretofore mostly closeted professionals who risked evictions and loss of jobs, went door to door coming out to their neighbors asking for support. The community, lesbians, gays, and friends gathered at LG centers (bi, trans, queer, were added later), community centers, church rec rooms to watch
“The Debate”, as well as the election returns, on tv (very few of us partook in TV, let alone owned one).
Good ol’ Anita (whose son is gay) and LaRouche wanted us placed in ‘concentration camps’.
The debate left our opponents gobsmacked! Especially when they accused gays of being pedophiles, and the counter arguement was
1) 99% of pedophiles were heterosexual males (Opponents Response: :::THUD:::!), and
2) If, based on our opponents’ assertions, the logical conclusion had to be: Lesbians are saints!
(Opponents response: :::::::THUD::::::::)
“The Debate” ended soon after when our opponents said they needed more time to research.
Heh. Idiots.

I voted in the S.C. primary today. Michele Bachmann was on the ballot, so I voted for her. Murphy said to “vote for women”, so I did. My husband voted for Mitt. We are not Repbs., anyone could vote.
Headclunker 01.21.12 at 11:40 pm
I got a call today from the Dimocratic Party. A pleasant sounding woman asked me if I would be voting for President Obama. I told her I could not vote for him because he has been such a huge disappointment after making all those promises and usurping the candidacy from Hillary Clinton. I told her we would all be alot better off if the party had not selected BO. I said I would be voting Democrat, but would be writing in Hillary’s name for President.
I think she got the message. And felt that she agreed.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords resigning from Congress this week.
Not unexpected but still sad.
goofsmom 01.22.12 at 2:26 pm
From AP:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Gabriel Giffords of Arizona says on her Facebook page she intends to resign from Congress this week to concentrate on recovering from wounds suffered in an assassination attempt a little more than a year ago.
According to officials in Washington, her resignation is expected to take effect on Monday.
The Democratic congresswoman was shot in the head last January as she was meeting with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. While her recovery has seemed remarkable, she says on Facebook she has more work to do to recover, and it is best from her state if she resigns her seat in the House.
Her shooting prompted an agonizing national debate about super-charged rhetoric in political campaigns.

Ga. judge orders president to appear at hearing
ATLANTA (AP) –
A judge has ordered President Barack Obama to appear in court in Atlanta for a hearing on a complaint that says Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen and can’t be president.
It’s one of many such lawsuits that have been filed across the country, so far without success. A Georgia resident made the complaint, which is intended to keep Obama’s name off the state’s ballot in the March presidential primary.
An Obama campaign aide says any attempt to involve the president personally will fail and such complaints around the country have no merit.
The hearing is set for Thursday before an administrative judge. Deputy Chief Judge Michael Malihi on Friday denied a motion by the president’s lawyer to quash a subpoena that requires Obama to show up.

OK – this is personal and I just need some feedback because I am veering on getting quite furious by the minute and wonder if I am tired from 3 weeks of travelling and came back to this.
New employee is a 32 year old daughter in law of a couple we are close friends with. Hired 2.5 weeks ago. Her two week paycheck arrived in the mail in a large blue envelope marked Paychek’s (name of the payroll company) and in big letters Private and Confidential. I saw right away it was opened. Check missing. At this time, I am getting livid and thinking the worst – that she had taken it and deposited it. Sure enough, when I went to my online banking, it was cashed. All this time, she talks to me twice a day but no mention that she needed her paycheck, she took it – NOTHING. Not a word.
I am not even sure what I want to say to her … I know I would go ballistic but wonder if I should be diplomatic and tell her to quit her job or be fired.
I wonder how many of you think it is wrong and what would you do in my shoes.
She is a college educated mother and quite classy in appearance and have owned two failed businesses… just to give a clue. I can’t accuse her of stealing her own check, can I ?

I’d just ask her in a non- accusatory way what happened. Shes a new employee, this is her first paycheck and maybe it was just an innocent mistake based on lack of understanding / orientation/ procedure.
DancesWithPumas 01.24.12 at 9:12 am
Requiring Obama to appear in court, while a good thing since he isn’t above the law, will also go a long way in giving him ammunition against his opponents and even moreso to support his position as front runner in the victimization Olympics and accusations of racism.
While we all know that giving him a pass would be more racist than not.

Freddie,

Dances – Goofs
I don’t know. A 32 year old college educated person who has owned two prior businesses – my head tells me that it is not a mistake. She took it upon herself to open something that is marked Private and Confidential, took the check and deposited it with no signature. All without even mentioning a word to me. As I said, I always ask, if there is anything for me, anything she needs to discuss, problems, anything. It defies logic and any excuses doesn’t seem to justify the action. Also, twice in her first two weeks of work, while we were absent, she let herself have the afternoon off with no prior approval. Just emailed and she was gone.
Dragonfly 01.24.12 at 5:25 pm
freddie 42
what is her job title/duties? Having run two businesses (failed) prior, she is probably not accustomed to getting prior approval for absences and she is also accustomed to paying herself. Why she opened something private and confidential is a good question. When is pay day? Were you there that day to get the mail, sign the checks, and distribute? If she deposited her paycheck before payday, she is going to be a problem employee. If it was payday and you were not present, she may have assumed that she had the right to get her check and go deposit it because of her parents being your friends and because, having run two businesses (failed) before, she is just not accustomed to waiting for someone else’s directive.
You probably already handled it by now, but my suggestion is that you meet with her and tell her (assuming her job title/duties fit with this) that you are depending on her to keep certain hours, and she will need to get prior approval or explain her emergency if she is going to leave for an afternoon. Also, even if she has authority to open the mail or process money transactions, she does not have the authority to open the confidential package from the payroll company.
Basically, I think you should orient her on her authority and your procedures again.
You also have to keep in mind she is a Y generation kid. What works on Y gen kids: secure their loyalty by giving them flexibility where it works for you and emphasizing your reliance on them to follow certain guidelines so that you can focus on your job and not worry about what is going on with her job.
take care!
