Hot Chicks of Occupy Wall Street!

in OWS

Updating to add YTTIK’s comment from downstairs because it sums it all up for me:

“They now have Occupy condoms. And the Hot Chicks of Occupy.

If this movement were not a dude-bro movement there would be signs about how 70% of the poor who live on less then a dollar a day are women, about how women only own 1% of the world’s property, how women, even in the US, only earn 78 cents on the dollar, if they are paid at all. How can you have a movement for economic justice and not focus on the economic injustice women have been experiencing for centuries?

The irony of those condoms really gets to me. “…lots of people out there are tired of feeling screwed. Occupy Condoms say it all in a neat little package while affording young protestors the protection they need to stay safe in the passionate frenzy that is social protest.”

We won’t be screwed! We will come first! Women however, shall go right on being screwed both literally and figuratively.”

Apparently the whole sleeping peacefully in public to create a ruckus and protest the culture of consumption and greed is something only boys are allowed to do:

“A lot of fantastic media has been created about the “Occupy” movement. I was watching one video in particular and commented to a friend, “Wow, seeing all those super smart hot chicks at the protest makes me want to be there.” He replied, “Hmmm… Yeah, let’s go with that.”

We instantly went to Tumblr and made hotchicksofoccupywallstreet.tumblr.com. Our original ideas were admittedly sophomoric: Pics of hot chicks being all protesty, videos of hot chicks beating drums in slow-mo, etc. But when we arrived at Zuccotti Park in New York City, it evolved into something more.

There was a vibrant energy in the air, a warmth of community and family, and the voices we heard were so hopeful and passionate. Pretty faces were making signs, giving speeches, organizing crowds, handing out food, singing, dancing, debating, hugging and marching.

It made me want to pack my bags and pitch a tent on Wall Street. And it’s in the light that we created this video.

And we hope it makes you want to be there too.”

Nothing objectifying or condescending to see here, move along! And make me a sandwich!

Sheesh, kids today. They have no sense of irony! In a blindly positive post, Bethany O’Grady of Gothamist, writes:

Campers are Safe Under the Strong Arm of the Law:
You’re always safe at Camp Zuccotti, where the NYPD does impromptu walk-throughs at all hours of the night. At 11:25 p.m., a man was escorted from the site by NYPD after witnesses reported seeing him “doing a line of coke”. Others said the man had been harassing women for the duration of his stay at Zuccotti Park and was in no way affiliated with the movement.”

Wait, what? I thought the NYPD was a buncha brutal thugs? Oh, maybe only when they stop you from grabbing ass?

Apparently many members of the activist African American community in and around NYC aren’t very impressed with Boy Scout Camp, I mean OWS, either:

“There are many white men there are very domineering, controlling, demeaning, sarcastic, condescending and do not make black women feel safe, welcome, empowered, appreciated or protected. They have no regard for black people or women.

Women are being molested in the park and there is no real viable system in place to handle it without the need for police intervention. There are white supremacists groups running around there.” (h/t Lola at Large)

And finally, what do you think about the Fifth of November “Bank Transfer Day” being promoted by OWS? Intriguing . . .

“Bank Transfer Day”
OH YES!!
Remember early 2000-2002? Remember the fucking stock market?
Yup the same Wall fuckers that then AGAIN took ya’all’s money. Now no more retirement money, 401k is less than ya started with? And they want Social Security gone so they can lose ALL your money when they take it over as PRIVATE. Yup it then becomes theirs, very privately.

I did not give them the second chance to rob me. Took my money out and chose 2 Credit Unions, a local community bank and my mattress!
Well if we all bail on them they will just take over the credit unions and community banks, remember they are to big to fail!!!

I am for throw the bums out…ALL of them! The repubs and dems, ALL of them.
Do not vote for more of the same.
Do not vote for any more of this CHANGE!!!
DO NOT CONSUME, Take your money and SAVE it, if you have any left after the rape and pillage of our economy!

5

freddiebrown 10.17.11 at 12:41 pm

HP – I would not go to the extreme of DO NOT CONSUME. What then is the point of life when we cannot get ourselves nice stuff, a cup of Caramel Macchiato, a nice scarf for Fall or what have you. I think it is better to not do EXCESS CONSUMPTION, OR DO NOT CONSUME IF YOU CAN’T. I went to give a paycheck to an employee, 19 year old with 4 month kid. Husband is 22 on disability from the Iran war. So essentially they were out of work for a while, but hey, I could see a TV SO FRINKING HUGE it about covers half their apartment wall. I was mesmerized by this huge screen in a small apartment.
Then another employee at 18 years,, she spends her money on getting eyebrows professionally tweezed for dates. She is beautiful enough. At 18? They look at me like I am from Mars when I said I’ve never had my nails done much less eyebrows. What is amazing is that a lot of Americans are very wasteful, consume too much and want too much material stuff. I personally know two young un-married women, with jobs, declare bankruptcy because of credit card debt. What they do to rack the cards up will make your eyes roll – mine did as they lived high and rich beyond their means. Yes, they confirm that they did go through with the bankruptcy. I am quite disgusted. We need to get back to “enough is good enough” otherwise, things will catch up with you.

” What then is the point of life when we cannot get ourselves nice stuff, a cup of Caramel Macchiato, a nice scarf for Fall or what have you.”
Yup Freddie that about sums up what the brainwashed public hears day in day out, nights in nights out. Consume make yourself happy, you deserve to be happy, buy what ever you want…consume consume. Here is your credit card go spend, be happy. You must buy we need customers to buy and buy, be happy we want your money!!!!!! Oh you can’t afford this house, we will work our magic, you shall have it. That big TV!! Wow do we have a deal for you, charge it, got ya card handy, NO interest for FIVE years.

I’m not certain about bank transfer day, because altho my bank has screwed me over with exorbitant fees, they have actually treated me better than my credit union.

However, hop over to TN Guerilla Women and look at the footage of the arrests at Citibank. 2 dozen protesters went into Citibank to close their accounts and were LOCKED in the bank to allow police to arrive to arrest them! As if that is not bad enough, one of the Citibank customers protesting was actually outside, on the sidewalk…a young woman in a business suit…and undercover detectives grabbed her and physically dragged her back inside just as the police arrived!!!

Citibank has released a lying statement saying the protesters were “trespassing” and disorderly and refused to leave when asked! These thugs are misusing our police force to physically drag their own customers off the street and arrest them for the “crime” of wanting to withdraw their own money!

Interesting graphic and article about the gender mix of Slutwalk vs OWS.

http://www.the-beheld.com/2011/10/occupied-slutwalk-wall-street-and-whos.html

Occupy Boston has a vastly different dynamic than that described in NYC.

I was there this weekend and took well over 100 pictures. They have older campers as well as young, and always a good mix of men and women, black, white, hispanic, etc. Recently a Jewish corner has sprung up at the camp and when I was there a semi-circle of women were singing in Hebrew. Veterans were a big presence as well….one young marine had this sign on his tent: we sow the sands with our blood and expect flowers to bloom. There is an amazing amount of art there as well. After the rains, people were working together to refortify the grounds with wood and straw, and the kitchen area was crazy busy. I asked what they needed, and the answer I got was “prepared foods” so later I delivered 4 dozen muffins and pastries to them, and I have two more dinner entrees planned for later this week…

No time to catch up on the thread below, but keep up the spotlight, murphy! It’s much needed!

I wrote a long post at OB about promoting women’s rights as human rights, and got good support for it, and was told by one of the campers that this topic is often discussed in their lengthy general assemblies and gets good support there, too. The problem is much of the drafting has not been coming from Boston…yet. We need to change that!

Zee 10.17.11 at 3:24 pm

HP…I need to email you a couple of the pictures I took of women who have had it with this bs. One sign I thought you’d especially appreciate read: Republican, Democrat, Pissed off!!! And guess which box next to each choice was checked?

Zee 10.17.11 at 3:26 pm

freddiebrown, I know what you mean. It sounds stupid for me to say “I haven’t had a pedicure in over a year” as if that is a hardship. But it is a small pleasure…and the family nail salon I used to frequent is no longer there.

11

admin 10.17.11 at 4:34 pm

I needed 2 cashiers checks for $50 each today. BofA wanted to charge me $10 EACH for the checks!! And I’m a pretty damn good business customer. So I got money orders instead, but they charged my $5 bucks each for those, which is still highway robbery!!

If a local credit union has online banking I am so there.

12

stoney42 10.17.11 at 6:36 pm

Murphy – #11

Go to our bank manager and complain. I bet they will put you on the waiver list so you will not get charged. Worth a try.

13

freddiebrown 10.17.11 at 6:49 pm

I hate banks – I really do. If I knew my pillow were safe, I would gladly stash it there. The pitiful interest you get is so laughable and then they want to charge you $25 a month for service charge (Bank of America)because they fricking didn’t link all our accounts so therefore one account didn’t have the minimum deposit.

Anyway, life is hell and then you die. I hired a temp girl. To show you how life is.. She was let go of her job. She interviewed and I wanted to hire her but while I was getting my act together, she told me that in the few weeks, she discovered she had Thyroid cancer (30+ girl with 2 kids). She would like to be paid under the table so she doesn’t loose her Medicaid or Medi something. She worked until 6 pm the day before her surgery,,because she needed the money. It has been less than a week and she came in today . She called in late because she had a difficult night. She came in with a big bandage over her Thyroid. Then she has a UTI infection from all the anti biotics she’s taking. I feel so bad to have her work but she insist she needs the money. What do you make of life. I know of a very talented potter who died within 6 months of a type of Thyroid cancer…I hope hers is not the same. I just want to give her some money and tell her to stay home. Which is the right thing to do. She said, working takes her mind off things.

On a happy note, and I dearly need a happy note today, Oprah magazine asked for more of our new samples… so thank God for next day California to New York at 8 am !!!

Forgive me while I get philosophical and use a lot of white space.

Set A: What can I (a frail rural retiree) actually do for or against OWS or their issues? Nothing much except research and post.
Set B: What different acts are the different people labeled OWS actually doing? Are there any of those acts I strongly agree or disagree with?
Do any of Set A easily match up with any of Set B? Yes. I agree with the economic message they’re publicizing, and I can support that by researching and posting statistics, graphs, etc.

At this stage, that’s all I can do, so that message is all I NEED to know about or judge. (Even if they all turned out to be bait and switch vampires or something, still the ‘bait’ is a true message worth supporting for itself.)

20

turndownobama 10.18.11 at 1:41 am

As for “save instead of consume” — save it WHERE?

As someone posted above: “Remember the fucking stock market?
Yup the same Wall fuckers that then AGAIN took ya’all’s money. Now no more retirement money, 401k is less than ya started with?”

Moving money to credit unions is a great gesture and may be safe for a while, or until inflation takes it under. But maybe it’s safer to spend it on useful items that will last.

21

freddiebrown 10.18.11 at 2:07 am

The stock market is just like gambling. You win some, you lose some. Pray that you don’t lose all. It is not for everyone so if you play or invest in the stock market, then be prepared to see your money dwindle to nothing especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. I speak from past experience and no one took my money. I gambled it all away in a very legit and grown up acceptable way, investing in the stock market. When it crashed in the 90′s I had no one to blame but myself. Thus went my life’s savings. All. But being on the side of youth, I was able to turn things around. But as your financial adviser would tell you when you get older, you don’t want to take on more risk and risk your nest egg. Best to diversify.

Zee 10.18.11 at 2:11 am

Two thumbs up for CJK2′s #15 and turndownobama’s #19!

Yes, everyone can help by posting, whether it’s statistics or huge social justice gaps they’re missing.

Tonight is my local trash-picking night…so besides the dinners I’d made I scrounged up shelves and 3 really nice wooden chairs for their “library.” I had their list of needs on my mind when I saw two large plastic bins with lids. They’d asked for such bins to keep the books safe. I could see something was in the bins but I stopped to see if it was nothing too gross and … the giant bins were filled with Legos!

Well, I wasn’t dumping those out, some child/ren would want them!

When I got to the camp I explained I had supplies for the library but the bins were filled with legos, so I asked if they had a child-care play area in the camp. Well, the “kids” themselves got all excited and said they had a “recess” area for recreation and started recollecting all their childhood memories of Legos and K’nex and planning how they’d use the building blocks to make models of future energy plants, etc. I just love reclaimed items. I wish there were a “reclaim” truck that followed the city’s garbage pick-up, to carry the things that could be reclaimed instead of trashed!

Sounds like these people are RECOVERING Bots!

This is from a WSJ article that’s pretty slanted, but these are encouraging figures.

An overwhelming majority of demonstrators supported Barack Obama in 2008. Now 51% disapprove of the president while 44% approve, and only 48% say they will vote to re-elect him in 2012, while at least a quarter won’t vote.
Fewer than one in three (32%) call themselves Democrats, while roughly the same proportion (33%) say they aren’t represented by any political party.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204479504576637082965745362.html?mod=rss_opinion_main

24

turndownobama 10.18.11 at 4:25 am

{{{{ Zee! }}}}

Looking at what WSJ says, if the ‘overwhelming majority’ of OWS voted for Obama and are longtime ‘activists’, then he already HAS their addresses. Any new address-sharing and networking will be among those who plan not to vote for him. So this is the first opportunity for the anti-Obama kids to learn they’re not alone and to get organized, without the faithful Bots keeping them in line.

The article is very slanted, though:
“Fewer than one in three (32%) call themselves Democrats, while roughly the same proportion (33%) say they aren’t represented by any political party.”
So what are the other 35%? Republicans?

_____________

I agree. I must say that I am bothered by the popularity of the Che shirts. I see young people wearing them all the time in NY. Some not so young like the old, balding men with pony tails.

I’m not sure if they are just unaware of the fact that Che was a mass murderer, or if they actually support his violent methods.

Either one of those possibilities is quite disturbing.

turndownobama, this weekend, when the peace rally joined Occupy Boston, there was a middle-aged man and his wife there. I’m sure they must’ve been regretful O-voters because the man had on an Obama shirt, thru which he marked over Zero’s face with a huge X. He was also holding a big peace flag and standing next to a “What change?” sign. In truth, it is not the kids who put O in power, even tho many of them treated him like a fad icon, because most of them didn’t vote! I saw the actual percentage recently and was shocked after all their “organizing” how few of them actually voted!

WTF?? Loss of vacation time? How about illegal assault charges and jail time? “Bologna” is right!
—-
NYC Inspector Broke Pepper Spray Rule
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
October 18, 2011 at 5:58 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — A person with knowledge of the investigation says a New York City police deputy inspector violated department guidelines when he used pepper spray on Occupy Wall Street protesters last month.

The person had direct knowledge of the review but was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

The video from the Sept. 24 incident shows Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna (boh-LOHN-’yah) blasting a cluster of women with pepper spray. Two of the women crumple on the sidewalk in pain. One screams.

The person says an internal New York Police Department review found that Bologna violated department standards on pepper spray use. He faces internal discipline of a loss of vacation time. He may choose to appeal the decision.

Zee 10.18.11 at 7:03 pm

Sorry, CJK and others. I’ve been there, regularly, and until you have, I will not stand for this tarring of the Occupy movement. It is your DUTY as an AMERICAN, to step up and speak up and guard against enemies foreign AND domestic. I have stood up, every time, to this day, and spoken up when people tried to put the Tea Party down. I’ve corrected them, and the TEA PARTY founders themselves have stood up and supported Occupy and warned them to guard against being co-opted. They know they were co-opted and are trying to safeguard a second uprising!

It’s a fucking LIE to say this grassroots uprising is backed by Zerobama. Sure, he may be trying to co-opt and RUIN them the same way he ruined Martha Coakley, AFTER she trounced the Probama guys in the primary. But I’m not going to sit by and listen to rightwing memes repeated here over and over by people who have yet to even visit a camp.

YES, we need to fight the sexism inherent in NOT ONLY these camps but the entire nation and the entire world, but the way to do that is to use some of the excellent to-the-point perspective such as you posted before, CJK. ie, no economic justice discussion is complete without the gender bias of women earning less than men at the forefront. That was brilliant…a sharp-edged tool of truth. This easy slander is a tool of division.

It’s a SLUR to say than a rape tars the entire movement with a “bros before hos” mentality. Maybe you haven’t seen all the footage I have of women-led discussions, women-led events, women featured speakers at Occupy sites all over the nation. Maybe you haven’t BEEN to a camp yourself as I have and have seen all the women involved.

Yes, it’s disheartening and infuriating to see gender bias so ingrained that people are all but blind to it. The answer, especially in THIS case, is to speak up, point out, and show the way…not sit back and gratulate oneself that these stupid kids are pigs. These kids are on the frontline, male and female, and we need to kick in, especially during ugly truth teaching-moments.

There are VETERANS, old and young, male and female, out there confronting the riot police to protect these protesters. Are we going to do less?

The Occupy movement is also being bombarded, not only by the vile Obama operatives, but by Libertarians and LaRouchies, etc etc. I think, under the circumstances, they are doing a pretty good job at navigating the mine field.

44

Zee 10.18.11 at 7:09 pm

@dances…wow…had no idea you were in such dire need of legos! :) I hate to say, I left both bins with the camp, because the kids were so overjoyed with them. My own son’s legos I got rid of this past summer…I gave them to a special needs school.

But! I promise to keep my eyes peeled and snare you the next batch of unattended Legos I find! Now…is it only Legos, or do you also have an interest in/collect tinker toys, ramagon, k’nex and other building toys?

John Adams was one of the first to promote democracy. Ever. The British royalty-bootlickers called democracy “mob-rule.” Just to put the rightwing meme in perspective.

John Adams, FDR, and many of our other national leaders had to rebel against their own elitist circle in order to bring some crumbs of justice to the…MOB.

I’ll take an anarchist any day over the bootlickers.

Yes, they’re all pigs when it comes to women. but, luckily for us, Adams and FDR married well. :)

“It is your DUTY as an AMERICAN, to step up and speak up and guard against enemies foreign AND domestic.”

It is my duty as a woman to insist that women’s safety, women’s economic justice, women’s needs, be recognized as a number one priority.

ZEE
For the record, the quote re: no economic justice discussion is complete without the gender bias of women earning less than men at the forefront. That was brilliant…a sharp-edged tool of truth, is attributed to yttik.

Glad the children have the Legos and are enjoying them. I have a thing for Legos and minatures, altho I don’t actively search for either.

EXACTLY!
And, anyone who was an activist and lived during the 60s
knows full well what happened to women during and after the balck civil rights movement, the gay rights movement, and every other movement that became dick-centric. Women were left in the dust… same as today. So, as much as I’m happy to see political activism on the rise, until I see active support for, and the prioritizing of the status of women … I’ll think of the boiz as engaged in just another one of their public circle jerks.

Unless Hillary (or a similar woman) runs, I think I’ll be voting for Dr. Jill Stein.

funny! i just this very afternoon saw a nifty little green Jill Stein bumper sticker on the back of a prius out front of the Concord post office.

I may vote for her too. Her bumper stickers sure are aesthetically pleasing!
