Violet Socks really hits it home here:

“It’s funny, isn’t it? Men run the world, own almost everything in it, hold almost every position of power, and yet these two women [Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton] —each the first in her party to become a serious contender for presidential office—are somehow responsible for everything bad. Somehow they’re in charge, somehow they’re the worst, somehow they are the fount of evil.

This, kids, is our old friend Patriarchy at work. Or, to be more specific, it’s the remnants of the thousands of years of cultural patriarchy we inherited and are only now beginning to change. Women in a patriarchy must be kept under control at all times. Any woman who escapes that control is, automatically, dangerous. Far more dangerous than any man can ever be, because a) she’s threatening to subvert the proper order of things, and because b) uppity women are unnatural and morally depraved.

This is not top-of-mind stuff; it’s not rational or logically derived. It’s deep-seated, incoherent, gut-level Fear of Women. It’s why the junior Senator from New York was personally blamed for the deaths of thousands of Iraqi babies. It’s why the former Governor of Alaska is now somehow personally responsible for the behavior of a schizophrenic shooter in Arizona. It’s why, in a world still owned and run by men, somehow the most terrifying figures are the handful of women who have crawled to the top.”

Read the whole thing. It’s an excellent reminder of the forces at work here; forces so strong that, less than three days after a violent and deranged man with easier access to a locker-full of automatic weapons than I have to reliable cell service brazenly opens fire on innocent, unarmed people, (mostly elderly women and several children) the national conversation is about how INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS Sarah Palin is.

And don’t forget about Sarah being hung in effigy…but no mention of that by the MSM!

I am repeating my post from downstairs. I think it’s important that we know what kind of person he is.

You just have to see this:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2011/01/10/2011-01-10_chilling_shrine_in_madmans_yard.html
Jared’s yard where he kept this shrine.
My question is – where the hell were his parents? He is said to have been living at home, right?
This is a sicko!

This is a sicko!
————
If I didn’t know the shrine belonged to Jared, I would have guessed it was a shrine put together for a Day of the Dead celebration celebrated by latinos.
I just hope the Christians whackos don’t start yammering about evil forces, and devil worship, or any of their other fear mongering religious bullshit.

A Day of the Dead celebration? I never even thought of it. Nor did it occur to me that the Christians would use this so called shrine to start warning about the devil, though I wouldn’t put it passed them.
I merely thought it important to see how disturbed this man is.

I think Loughner said he had “no religious preferences” when he tried to enlist in the army, and some of his online postings imply he is an atheist.

Great to have you back Murphy with another right on topic (oops, was going to say right on target) post. It’s good to focus on the underlying irrationality, not immediately obvious with the overheated rhetoric from our media.

Hello, it’s been a long time, but I’d like to join this conversation. While I agree with Violet Socks in many ways, I think it is more than “cultural” influence at work in Patriarchy. The survival of any species depends on breeding, which clearly depends on women. Earliest prototype men had to have a breeding woman. Probably the idea of hiding, or controlling women developed as a way of protecting their own “family” group from raids by other “families.” I’m suggesting that the need is still latent and unrecognized and that equality won’t happen until we address that aspect of the problem too. How to do this is another issue in itself.

the guy was a psycho – both political sides have them:

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2011/01/jared_loughner_alleged_shooter.php

A classmate of the man accused of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords this morning describes him as “left wing” and a “pot head” in a series of posts on Twitter this afternoon.

Caitie Parker did not immediately respond to our request for an interview, but her “tweets” in the hours after the shooting paint a picture of Jared Loughner as a substance-abusing loner who had met Giffords before the shooting. She says, Loughner described the congresswoman as “stupid and unintelligent.”

In Defense of Inflamed Rhetoric
The awesome stupidity of the calls to tamp down political speech in the wake of the Giffords shooting.

http://www.slate.com/id/2280616/pagenum/all/

Any call to cool “inflammatory” speech is a call to police all speech, and I can’t think of anybody in government, politics, business, or the press that I would trust with that power. As Jonathan Rauch wrote brilliantly in Harper’s in 1995, “The vocabulary of hate is potentially as rich as your dictionary, and all you do by banning language used by cretins is to let them decide what the rest of us may say.” Rauch added, “Trap the racists and anti-Semites, and you lay a trap for me too. Hunt for them with eradication in your mind, and you have brought dissent itself within your sights.”

Our spirited political discourse, complete with name-calling, vilification—and, yes, violent imagery—is a good thing. Better that angry people unload their fury in public than let it fester and turn septic in private. The wicked direction the American debate often takes is not a sign of danger but of freedom. And I’ll punch out the lights of anybody who tries to take it away from me.

Yep. Unless it’s in self-defense, anyone who murders is disturbed, and this man exhibited obvious signs of disturbance that went undiagnosed / untreated.

As far as starting with the devil.. I viewed a youtube that depicted a pentagram with a light / fire in a can/candle?? at the apex of each segment, and several men moving about in the scene.
The poster explained that this was a video of ‘Jared Loughner engaged in a demon ritual at a Tea Party gathering’.

Just crap… the poster could have attributed the event and the people as anyone at any time.

catsden, I agree that is part of it. Patriarchy is all about control and necrophilia – only women who are breeding for the controller, serving the controller, and smilingly saying yes to every whim of the controller are safe in the patriarchy.

Can’t answer for Murphy but her comment seemed to me to relate to the comments regarding Loughner’s “altar”, or “shrine”, or leftover Halloween decorations, which suggests to some that he had some religious belief, but, as Murphy stated, Loughner stated “none” on his military app where they ask for religious affiliation.

Considering this line of thinking and how it is supported by many religions, the best example of this in modern day is Muslin women that are forced encouraged to wear a burqua to hide themselves from any male outside their home. If they don’t take the ‘encouragement’ seriously, they can be beaten, killed, or just maimed.

When did this change for ancient women? When they learned to fight back!

A woman can be slandered nonstop, to put her in ‘her place’. But heaven help her if she knows how to shoot a gun, and puts a target symbol on her website.

Maybe all Target stores need to change their logos before it incites more shootings.

31

catsden 01.10.11 at 6:24 pm

Shadowfax: maybe it only started for women when they decided to step outside the bounds of their respective social groups. My sister joined a Baptist Church in the 1970′s and was forbidden to wear lipstick, dance, or dress “out of line.” She invited me to join a group going somewhere one time and I can tell you it was a hot zone of testosterone and supression. Now how did our conversation help us get on to solving the problem?

32

Shadowfax 01.10.11 at 6:32 pm

Now how did our conversation help us get on to solving the problem?

———
Just like you did, just say ‘no’, walk away, refuse, support other women that refuse. Help protect them, let them know they can make it on their own.

I know many women that stay in abusive relationships because they believe what men tell them, that they can’t make it on their own.

Stand up with them and for them.

That’s partly what this blog is about.

33

Shadowfax 01.10.11 at 6:37 pm

Women don’t accept abuse or oppression if they believe in themselves. Looking at oppression as a snapshot of history doesn’t break women out of their chains, only action changes the situation.

Women standing together are powerful, not singled out as victims.

I’m dragging delle’s link from below up here because I think a lot of people missed it. WSJ covers a lot of details…Jared went to one of Giffords’ “congress on your corner” meetups in 2007, long before anyone was obsessed with Palin. He was furious when the congresswoman cleverly replied to his arrogant and irrelevant question, “How do we know that words really have meaning?” ….she replied in Spanish. hahaha! This infuriated him and he let it rankle. Three years later, he got his “revenge.”

36

catsden 01.10.11 at 7:20 pm

Shadowfax: all the talk in the world is not enough to change the oppression of women in this country let alone in the world. Women have been talking about this since the first women went to medical school in the mid-1800′s. We have to dig deeper psychologically, culturally, and historically to find the answers. But, thank you, I have been walking away from it since my father started trying to marry me off to one of his own and since I heard “women can’t, women don’t.” I took a lot of verbal abuse from other women for it too. I understand the situation; I’m just looking for better answers after a 160 year old battle began.

catsden 01.10.11 at 7:20 pm

Shadowfax: all the talk in the world is not enough to change the oppression of women in this country let alone in the world.

—–> I am not saying that talking is the answer, ACTION is the answer.
Standing up, defending, encouraging women in our lives to walk away from abuse. Not just blogging, not just paying dues to NOW, taking the time in your life to reach out to women you see, spend time with, talk to them. This can’t be done in silence, or writing some perfect disertation that men will read and have a light bulb moment.

I don’t know what you are looking for as an answer…but I tried.

We have to dig deeper psychologically, culturally, and historically to find the answers.

—-> The answer is simple, men want control, want the power and want women to accept that.

That mindset is being broken, and men are rebelling by trying to bully women back into submission. What they have done and do to Hillary, Sarah and other women that show real leadership, give women courage to stand up for themselves makes weak men insecure and fight harder to retain their historical control.
—–
But, thank you, I have been walking away from it since my father started trying to marry me off to one of his own and since I heard “women can’t, women don’t.” I took a lot of verbal abuse from other women for it too. I understand the situation; I’m just looking for better answers after a 160 year old battle began.

—> Like I said, I don’t know what kind of answers you are looking for, but I have walked in those shoes, and it’s what worked for me and others I know.

Parker/Spitzer just spent an hour on the so-called rhetoric and ‘toxic atmosphere’ causing the shootings. They had that political Arizona sheriff on for a huge hunk of the show and he is still blaming all this on the right wing. I’ve been screaming about him churning this up since his first news conference. I kept turning the channel back and forth so I wouldn’t have to watch it hoping they would change the subject. Of course, Rush Limbaugh did his show on it today too and they acted as if that gave them carte blanche to keep the nonsense up. The left wing is not going to let up and the right will respond. Disgusting.

It seems that everyone that want their 15 minutes of fame, all they have to do is bad mouth Palin and they will make the news. Incredible.

Thanks, murphy, for this link. Violet so nails this…and it was so infuriating to read.

Here is something somewhat OT but relevant. I drive thru the Blue Hills on my way to work…they are so gorgeous. I’ve seen a couple of guys in a spot where you can park and hike along a trail by a creek. So today at a meeting I mentioned I may try to time it so I have the time for a brisk walk on the gorgeous path before work. A woman co-worker said she would not recommend that and I immediately got chills and said, no, I would never do that. I knew right away what she meant. Women could be attacked. And indeed she told me a story of how she was chased over one of those damned hills.

So here’s another thing. Women in MA can’t get a stun gun or laser for protection. Apparently we can get a gun…but shouldn’t we be able to get a strong nonlethal weapon given the reality we have to live with??

48

Zee 01.11.11 at 3:14 am

It doesn’t take a person who can make homemade biscuits to figure out that each person’s stance on this issue is determined by their individual perspective or rather their relative distance in position to the subject . (see theory of relativity – Albert is better at explaining)
For me , it is most important to seek the root cause which is NOT , imo, rhetoric, but rather the state of mental healthcare in this Country .
It is much easier to suggest that limits be placed in order to aviod “triggering ” emotionally or psychologically unstable than to actually HELP them ..

32. That’s probably because all the evidence of his Youtube, Myspace, and Facebook… plus the accounts of his professors, of people who attended school with him, etc, all point to his being clinically psychotic. He met Giffords, and she couldn’t answer his entirely mad question “what is government, if words have no meaning?”, and she sent him a letter with his surname misspelled. He is, at least to judge by the available evidence, a delusional paranoid obsessive. He is quite probably suffering from untreated schizophrenia. Such individuals are more driven by whatever is going on inside their own heads than they are influenced by outside factors.

michelina, apparently he failed the drug test, but this was a few years ago. It wasn’t a recent trigger. Also, I think he only applied to the military after he was kicked out of school for being unbalanced and a disturbance. So many ignored signs. But from the WSJ link, he was obsessed with the congressWOMAN prior to those turns of event, because she dealt with his smart-ass question in a mild but decisive way that left him humiliated and “beaten” —and we know guys don’t like that trait in a woman.

Jessus I am so proud of SARAH…she is a danger to the boyzzz!

I am also afraid for her safety….I know she has a gun and nuclear weapons in her back pocket…but still.

Jessus I am going to have more bacon this AM.

This hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s being reported that the sheriff knew about the weirdo:

http://nation.foxnews.com/arizona-shooting-rampage/2011/01/10/redstate-outspoken-sheriff-accused-dismissing-loughner-death-thr

This is why he is so quick to blame others.
*****************************
Yes, I’ve heard this too and it makes perfect sense to me. Why so quick to turn a tragedy into a political football. As crazy aggressive as he was, he had to have made threats to other people. The teacher said this, the neighbor said his Dad was aggressive, etc. Someone has to jump on this, confirm it and shut the Sheriff up.

HP, you made my morning. LMAO! Nuclear weapon in her back pocket.

66

BigCatLover 01.11.11 at 11:32 am

My bot friend just cancelled lunch with me today, AGAIN. Whenever the news get crazy, she cancels the lunch that she suggested, not me.

Zee, yes, when Loughner asked his 11 dimensional chess question to Gifford, I heard she answered in Spanish, embarrassing him. I can testify that a male’s reaction to being outsmarted is to call you stupid, which is exactly what he did. I’ve experienced this many times when I call out a dumb statement by some male with a counterfact. That’s why he was obsessed with her. He needed to better her.

67

BigCatLover 01.11.11 at 11:35 am

I think his mug shot shows that he has gone over the top for sure. Not insane in my opinion (and I am no mentalhealth expert) because he was taking care of himself, thinking clearly enough to premeditate this and follow it up.

68

DancesWithPumas 01.11.11 at 12:00 pm

I don’t believe being able to take care of ones self, nor pre-meditation, exempts one from being mentally ill. The unibomber, dahmer, hinkley, westboro phelps, the numerous men who have ‘gone postal’, etc.

69

HP Boston 01.11.11 at 12:09 pm

Yup lots of ticking time bombs (99% men) walking around, voices in their heads the big and the small.
Ah yes but they all grew up in Sarah’s house, the wicked witch of the north. She alone has spawned the crazy men.
She does keep that hunk a’ hunk of burning love she married real close.

Women who rock – what a Mom:

Arizona shooting: Mother shielded daughter from shots

So, Mary pushed Emma up against the brick wall, cradling and covering her with her own body. “There was nowhere to go,” she said.

Only when she was shot the first time did she realize what she was protecting her daughter against. “I knew what it was then,” Mary said.

That’s when she saw a man with a gun, 2 feet away.

“It was terrifying,” Reed said. “But I had to save my daughter.”

She scanned the crowd, but couldn’t see her husband or son.

Owen and Tom were less than 10 feet away when the gunman started shooting, just a short distance, but enough to keep them safe in a peculiar crime where violence erupted so cataclysmically in such a small space.

Then, Reed was shot again. And shot again. But she didn’t move. She couldn’t expose Emma.

There are still good men who are truly heroes among men:

When Jared Loughner began firing on the crowd gathered around Rep. Gabrielle Gifford at the Safeway supermarket in Tucson on Saturday, Mavanell thought the sounds came from firecrackers. Dorwan knew otherwise and quickly pulled his wife to the ground and threw himself over her. Mavy — as she is known to her friends — was hit three times in the legs, and is now in stable condition and expected to survive. Dorwan was shot, fatally, through the head, at the age of 76. Dorwan was memorialized at the Mountain Avenue Church of Christ — a small Tucson-area church where he and Mavy had worshipped and served — on Sunday.

Okay, folks, Texas Tigress is going to have surgery in the morning. Please send her your PUMA mojo. She’s going to come through this like the champ she is, but send her some love.

She did not authorize this comment by the way, but better to ask forgiveness than permission, right? Good thing I can fly!

Best of luck with your surgery and a speedy recovery. Take your computer if it’s a laptop and check in if you’re going to be in the hospital for any length of time. If it’s a short stay, check back in when you get home. We’ll be waiting to hear from you.

OT but Headclunker, wontbackdown, lovers of our ocean and marine life, here is a presentation by Bob Graham and Bill Reilly re the Gulf of Mexico oil spill task force.

Unfortunately I suppose there is a recommendation to spend more money by having an independent agency within the Department of Interior – I think it is a great idea but where do we get the money – to be responsible for safety because of the internal conflict with MMS (a failed agency – that’s where we get the money – defund that joke), which both collects money and enforces regs. What it does a good job of, this MMS, is collect money. To the detriment of safety. Did you know MMS collects more money for the treasury than any other agency besides IRS? The new safety agency should have a leader with a background in science and management to serve a fixed term to avoid the politics inherent in the executive branch and this industry. I nominate Headclunker!!

and what do people think about the killer being mentally ill? I have heard some of that from people on fb, and I may be cruel, but I really don’t care if he is mentally ill. I don’t believe in the death penalty, but put him behind bars for the rest of his life. Just my opinion.

Uh-oh – there goes the media narrative for the attacks on Sarah. Think they’re calling the DNC yet to get their new talking points?

Loughner’s friends say he disliked watching tv.

Osler says his friend wasn’t shooting at people, “he was shooting at the world.” Regarding the high-pitched talk radio and cable news political rhetoric, Osler says his friend didn’t even watch the news.

He did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn’t listen to political radio. He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right.

Invalidresponse @122– It shows the power of electing women. These four women (as much as I hate Pelosoi’s actions supporting Ofraud over Hillary) are on the forefront of moving our country to gender equality. They are a ‘band of sisters’ and they know it. Even though their successes do not always seem to come quickly enough, progress is being made. We lost little Christina Taylor, but think of how wonderful it was that she was growing up thinking that women were Congresswomen and Senators and Secretaries of State— and that, thererfore, all those things were opportunities for her.

RIP sweet Christina Taylor.

gojoyknocks, I heard it reported that the Zero received a groupie welcome, but mercifully the clip they played was not of that.

I’m grateful to the blizzard that I missed all the live coverage of this, and apparently of Palin’s response.

damn you delle..!! (or is it ::twisted:: ? I forget!) I followed your link and looked up all the hullabaloo over Palin’s use of “blood libel.” I don’t have time to follow all this Palin-derangement-syndrome, but I can’t stop. It’s so jaw-dropping.

Here’s a link for anyone wanting to shake their heads over how Palin is Evil Incarnate. 131

Zee 01.13.11 at 12:14 pm

omg, also in the comment thread from the above link was one guy opining how Olbermann never really targeted anyone in his show. No, that’s why he just apologized for calling for Hillary’s murder.

Here’s another link I followed after one of the commenters claimed that talking points memo had “proved” that the Daily Kos “targeting” of Congresswoman Giffords was a “photoshopped fake.”

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/145640.php

I could NOT believe they were pretending that the images used were meant to be understood as part of the original page. The images were obviously meant to underscore the words in the original, because more than one Dem was listed as needing to be “targeted.”

I feel like Alice through the Looking Glass.

Oh, and they were defending the DLC bullseye map by saying it was ok because it targeted states, not “people” and that the rhetoric was all about family values. ?!

Hello? Palin’s map targeted DISTRICTS, not people, and the DLC map was captioned “behind enemy lines!”

But hey. Palin is “giggling” about her Mama Bear with a gun “image” and that, according to the Palin-deranged, makes her the SINGLE MOST DANGEROUSEST pol out there!!!!!

snip: “There’s no way to sugar-coat it. Sure she thought she could get away with it — getting away with it is also a big part of her image. And that’s the single most dangerous political stance there is.”

DancesWithPumas 01.13.11 at 12:28 pm

It isn’t the violent rhetoric, nor the guns, nor her ability to hunt and shoot, nor garner the attention of media, pols, and the public at large… what makes Sarah Palin, and all women who have a platform to spread their messages, the dangerousest is she, we, have lady parts.

No surprises here – heard on the news last night that the shooter thought all college girls enjoy being raped:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/01/12/national/main7239564.shtml
The Journal notes the overriding misogyny of many of the posts, including the one titled, “Why Rape?,” which argues that college girls enjoy being raped: “There are Rape victims that are under the influence of a substance. The drinking is leading them to rape. The loneliness will bring you to depression. Being alone for a very long time will inevitably lead you to rape.”

136

Zee 01.13.11 at 4:00 pm

no way will the national discourse be on this “rape theory.” They are not done savaging Sarah Palin yet:

Kudos to Somerby….he’s ripping the PDS left a new one:

Many people would never consider listening to Collins, because of the endless, simpering ways she has chosen to mock Bristol Palin…In the last six months Collins referred to Bristol Palin in at least seven different columns, wasting her major national platform on repetitive, simpering nonsense…the country is full of people who wouldn’t listen to a word she says because of those inane, mocking columns… Collins provides simpering entertainment for us upper-class rubes. On Monday, she finally dropped her pose and tried to suggest some serious ideas. But why would anyone listen to someone like her?

http://www.dailyhowler.com/

138

Zee 01.13.11 at 4:18 pm

That was just the beginning…he goes on and on at length about Olbermann and others combing thru the shit to try to stir it up and induce Palin-loathing in the tribe.

He’s long-winded, but well worth a read…too many good parts to excerpt but here’s another:

“These men are still all about manufacturing outrage, even where special efforts must be made to keep the outrage alive…Sarah Palin’s combative tone and miserable judgment really didn’t “cause this tragedy.” … But by the laws of Cable Fury, if our tribe can’t savage Palin for that, we must invent another outrage. And that was the role played by Palin’s “blood libel” comment…Olbermann was outraged. …he powered ahead with his own tribal loathings, which he has faithfully served to liberal viewers over the past many years….But sure enough! Gene Robinson has used that same offending phrase while speaking with Olbermann himself, in October 2008! But then, several other major liberals have used that offending phrase in ways which don’t directly relate to the repulsive historical claims against Jews…In short, the phrase has passed into somewhat general use—a point Alan Dershowitz made yesterday as he defended Palin…its “metaphorical” use doesn’t seem widespread, but it has plainly existed…. liberal screamers will be selective in choosing when to shout.

Tribal loathing looks like that—and helps doom the liberal movement.”

Somerby goes on, explaining how Ubermann is turning liberals into nitwits and how he hopes everyone remembers this sad chapter when and if some nutcase is inspired by the hate rhetoric against Palin.

I’m about ready to rip somebody a new one. Just saw this lovely post and comments on my fb page (from a Hillary national delegate, btw):

Status update: Kay Bailey Hutchison not seeking re-election next time! This could be good in that maybe we could win her seat, or it could be bad and open up the seat to someone worse. Thank goodness Tom Delay can’t run.

Comment #1: I hate that old shrew! She’s probably running for veep or something, that’s why she’s vacating… she’ll never really go away!

Original poster reply: Crap, I didn’t think of that! That’s scary, like really scary. OMG, what if she runs as President to try to beat that scarier shrew, Palin?! Ugh, I never thought I would root the Republicans on in favor or Romney or Christie.

What.The.Fuck. I will most likely lose this fb “friend” after my reply.

Off Topic but I found interesting, thought I would share as some of our Pumas are into astrology.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110113/us_yblog_thelookout/earths-wobble-means-your-zodiac-sign-may-be-wrong

A Minnesota astronomer confirms what many have suspected: Your horoscope is quite possibly wrong.

Earth’s shifts on its axis over the past 3,000 years have changed the 12 zodiac signs. For example, think your sign is Aquarius? You may be a Pisces. (There’s also a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, that’s based on a constellation the ancient Babylonians threw out for symmetry thousands of years ago.)
——snip

In my case instead of Scorpio, I would be a Libra. I looked up the characteristics and they fit me much better.

The dems and the media are really playing up the eye opening miracle yesterday, with Gillibrand and Wasserman-Schultz on the phone to CNN before the rally (I mean the memorial service) gushing about what a miracle it was. Others say she had opened her eyes before. A doctor tonight on CNN mentioned that she had opened her eyes for her husband, too. CNN did not ask him when and maybe spoil the miracle.

I watched the service from start to finish last night and was stunned at the themed commenorative t-shirts and the nonstop cheering through the service. There was a standing ovation for each victim as their name was read and of course for Obama. He started solemnly and respectfully but could not resist the cheering crowd after every 4 words he said. Pretty soon, he became Preacher Barack and went into his revival voice. The words were fine but the tone was not. He talked about lack of civil discourse three separate times. I was pretty disgusted with the whole thing and only hope the families of the victims handled it better than I did. It was truly bizarre. Welcome to the beginning of Obama campaign 2012.

The doctor announced on Sunday that she had opened her eyes:

Since they started playing up the miricle, the chronicle removed the story.

I was disgusted too. The T-shirts were so disrepectful and insulting! If I had been a relative of one of the victims, I would have walked out!

Interesting fact: Reid Wilson of Hotline said the Republican National Committee (who are electing a new Chair today) has a rule that states the the chair and co-chair cannot be the same gender. This came up on Washington Journal this morning because there are 2 woman candidates running, but they are at a little disadvantage because all the candidates, except one, for the co-chair spot are woman. So if the rule is followed, the likelidhood that the winning co-chair will be a woman could hurt the woman candidates for chair. I’ll be interested to see if they follow their rule (institued by Gerald Ford, I believe).
Does anyone know if the dems also have this rule?

You may have seen the reports that the AZ memorial t-shirts were the idea of the university not the re-elect O campaign. Follow the link in this comment from Uppity Woman’s site to a letter on the OFA site in 2008:

lorac, on January 14, 2011 at 3:17 AM said:
So the college had the idea for the tshirts? How interesting. There’s a screen shot from 2008 from Organizing for a Fraud that has the same marketing slogan…. WHAT a SMALL WORLD! ROFL

BigCatLover 01.14.11 at 11:00 am

Another commenter on Uppity Woman talked to a reporter about the slogan being used in 2008 on the OPA site and this reply will reinforce what we are up against with the American media:

ProudMilitaryMom, on January 14, 2011 at 10:24 AM said:
Just spoke to this reporter BOB CHRISTIE (AP) who contributed to this article
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110114/ap_on_re_us/us_congresswoman_shot_rally
In which they say
“The university said it did the planning with minimal input from the White House. The school paid for the event, including $60,000 for 20,000 T-shirts bearing the words “Together We Thrive,” which were handed out for free. The money will not come student tuition, fees or tax dollars.”

Called to ask him about the OFA screenshot. From the tone- I assume he has seen it. More importantly he told me “We can’t see any connection with a memorial and something that happened two years ago.”

He told me I could draw a connection if I wanted to but he didn’t see it.
Sound familiar? I am just a crazed old lady with a conspiratorial mind.

Here we go again ladies and gentlemen!
Pass the popcorn please.

154

Zee 01.14.11 at 11:05 am

BCL, yep. The college may have had the idea to amend the “Together” logo to say “Tuscon and America” but there was never any doubt that “Together We Thrive” was a Team Obama slogan. Please.

Also…that not the same gender rule is a jaw-dropper…how odd. I’d never heard of any of that.

155

BigCatLover 01.14.11 at 11:14 am

Zee, The reporter called the gender rule ‘obscure’ so I wonder how much they enforce it? I’m sure it was a good thing when they adopted it but now it’s possible that it could keep both positions from being held by women.

How’s this for irony:

Just as Americans are debating whether untamed political rhetoric inspired the shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona, the founder of a project to promote civility in politics is calling it quits because only three elected members of Congress agreed to sign a rudimentary “Civility Pledge.”

Mark DeMoss, a Republican and a prominent evangelical Christian who runs a public relations firm in Atlanta, initiated CivilityProject.org in January 2009 because of alarm over what he saw as the increasingly vicious tone in American politics. He asked his friend, Lanny J. Davis, a Jewish Democrat and a lobbyist who worked for President Bill Clinton, to join the effort.

They sent out 585 letters asking every sitting governor and member of Congress to sign a pledge that said:

I will be civil in my public discourse and behavior.

I will be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them.

I will stand against incivility when I see it.

Mr. DeMoss said he in an interview that he is now folding the project after spending two years and about $30,000 in expenses on the endeavor. Three legislators had signed the pledge. They were Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut; Representative Frank Wolfe, Republican of Virginia; and Representative Sue Myrick, Republican of North Carolina.

So, how is BO going to raise money this time around?

I posted this at the Politico link below.
#1041
Jan. 15, 2011 – 11:32 AM EST

The Obama Campaign eventually admitted to having $259 million in “unitemized donations”. MUR6142.com was filed with the FEC and is still an active Matter Under Review. It is unlikely that more than $40 million of the unitemized campaign funds were from donors under the reporting limit as the campaign did report many of those donors in their itemized donations.

All of the FEC reports made by the campaign before the election were later revised, with the campaign issuing an average 3 reports for every filing. And they still contain alot of garbage.

Could Obama have won the election without $200 million in illegal campaign contributions?

Do not be fooled again.

NYS, lots of “good catches” in your “Palin is Finished” DUdies report.

It was a deadly day overseas today…I saw disturbing footage on my local news channel, but apparently the war is no longer being covered on cable news? I don’t watch it enough to know…has anyone else seen coverage?

On a good news front, the awesome young man on my street was supposed to be deployed to Afghanistan and instead got switched to Iraq. So he came home during the draw down of troops and is back now. But the young woman who was relaying this news to me added she had another friend killed in Afghanistan. :/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_Parks

I had the privilege of hearing Rosa Parks speak at my law school. Of course, she is an Aquarius! Her birthday is February 4. Actually, hearing about Rosa Parks was how I was first exposed to the Civil Rights struggle of the 60s. My mother grew up in Montgomery, AL, and on our way from the interstate to my aunt’s house, we crossed a street named after Rosa Parks. I was old enough to read, but really young. I remember being impressed that I was finally seeing a street named after a woman. I asked my mother about it, and she told me about Rosa Parks declining to sit at the back of the bus.

I also had the opportunity to meet the pastor, Fred Shuttlesworth, while in a leadership class in Montgomery, Alabama.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Shuttlesworth

For those of you who are my friends on fb, I put up a happy belated birthday to Alice Paul, born 11 January 1885. She was amazing. She makes me proud to be a reassigned Capricorn, as apparently I was born when the Sun was still in Capricornus, but I’ve believed all my life I am an Aquarian because of the efforts to suppress knowledge of the 13th sign.

Our local news channel had a Massachusetts astrologer, Dorothy Oja, said that every now and then someone tries to resurrect that myth about the thirteenth sign, etc, and that no one’s sign has changed.

She may be right, but there did use to be thirteen months of 28 days, or thirteen moons, as there are per year and per women’s cycles. That equals 364 days, with one day set aside every year. I would love to go back to that calendar. Whether or not that means there used to be 13 astrology signs I don’t know, but I’d never read about them when reading about the old calendars.

196

Zee 01.15.11 at 9:47 pm

Julius Caesar was the one, I believe, who changed the calendar to 12 months.

So it’s not that long ago, and there must be old records on astrology as well.

The days of the week were named after both sun and moon and god and goddess…Thor, Thursday, Frieda, Friday, iirc. For sure these days they’d be all male commemorative, if renamed.

197

File under….bullying? Harassment? Mystery?

A sweet young woman at my work took an inexplicable likeness to me. She thought I was the most friendly, upbeat, etc…well, because I see that as my job, when I’m getting paid for it, lol.

Mostly I steer clear from office politics, drama, and gossip, but recently she kept complaining about a coworker who worked alongside her….he was a surly young man, always scowling, etc. Son or other close relative of a manager.

She recently kept telling me he was driving her to distraction, to the bitter end. She even mentioned he was making up stuff about her. I never asked what (my friends despair of my lack of prying) nor could I imagine what on earth there would be to say about this very straightforward and conscientious girl.

Well, after 2 weeks of not seeing her I finally asked someone if she was on vacation….and was told she up and quit. The boy must feel guilty about something, because he actually greeted me tonight instead of his usual wordless snarl. I don’t want to equate him with the shooter, Jared, but I wonder how many marginal cases might turn out to be something longterm and extremely problematic…and how and when do we know to get involved?

This young woman lives with her mom…who knows how important this job was to her…or why she felt harassed enough to quit? And should it be our business to know?

Here’s another link I followed after one of the commenters claimed that talking points memo had “proved” that the Daily Kos “targeting” of Congresswoman Giffords was a “photoshopped fake.”
=============================

Here’s proof the original had targets on it. An admission and defense by one of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2011/01/gabrielle-giffords-tim-pawlenty-2012-presidential-race-/1
“The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, for example, used red bull’s eyes on a map to show the GOP candidates in its sights. Ryan Rudominer, a spokesman for the DCCC, told the Palm Beach Post over the weekend that the Democratic map was not threatening since it used an image that is also associated with Target, the national retail chain.”

Crap, I didn’t make that clear at all. It was Media Matters who tried to “debunk” the page that was scrubbed from Daily Kos. I’m not talking about the DLC map.

The page scrubbed from Daily Kos was a list of names in very fine print, along with their districts, and a message that these Dems should be targeted for primary challenges. Someone took a screen shot of the scrubbed page and added a pic of Giffords with an arrow to her name amongst the list, and also added a graphic of a target with an arrow pointing to the word “target.”

The idiots at Media Matters, whom I normally like, but this is the second time they’ve ginned up fake debunking, claim that this was being presented as what Daily Kos originally posted. As if. Why would they present a list of names and single out one of them? They wouldn’t. No one claimed they did. They were pointing out that Giffords, by name, was amongst their own “target” list. Had they merely added arrows and circled the words in question, no one would be able to read the words, as the print was too fine.

To make matters worse, Palin’s list was identical, in form, to Daily Kos’ list. In other words, Palin listed the reps at each district she was targeting. A long list of names in fine print. And for this, the so-called progressive community are saying she put a target ON Giffords.

It’s maddening. They excuse the DLC map because it was targeting “states, not people.” Palin’s targets were over districts, not people. But because she had a dense block of fine print names listed, she was suddenly “putting crosshairs on people.” But it was ok for Daily Kos to list Giffords as a target. And apparently it’s ok for an online magazine to picture Palin’s face with crosshairs right over it.

No wonder people are confused. I remember a carnival ride that spun as fast as all this…it plastered people to the wall and they could drop the floor because the center of gravity had shifted.

TT and dragonfly, thanks…I’m not technically a co-worker, because I work for a small company set up in a corporate outlet. (Kind of like a vendor…too bad the outlet is not “Target” or I could really riff off that!) I’m only privy to snippets of the interoffice drama, so we never really had enough time together for any extended conversations. I only knew she lives with her mom because she told me she had to get some kind of special ok to bring her mom to the Christmas party as her “significant other.” Both she and the guy who was driving her nuts appear to be kind of….misfit youngsters…not in any major way, but she did seem uncharacteristically flustered. I thought it was just because she had to work alongside a surly kid when she herself is bubbly…but then she did say he was “making stuff up” about her. The surly kid is the relative of one of the bosses. I wouldn’t even know the chain of command or whom to speak to. I’m worried about her, but I’m not sure having her come back to a climate that is toxic to her would be best. But this is a chain store, so perhaps she could be given her job back in a different outlet?

More madhouse fun…or is it funhouse madness?

In the last two days a Republican ex-candidate has been arrested for making threats on FB to a judge….and one of the shooting victims in Tuscon has been involuntarily shoved in a mental institution for shouting threats to a Tea Partier.

Question: if our current political landscape were fiction instead of reality, which author would be writing this high comedy-horror genre mutation?

1. Anne Rice
2. Lewis Carroll
3. Douglas Adams
4. Joan Aiken
5. Roald Dahl
6. Is actively being collaboratively ghost-written by Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, Dorothy Parker and Mark Twain

I thought I was a Capricorn and when I read the traits I had to agree they fit me pretty close, (although I don’t really pay attention to any of that stuff) With all the media of the change I went and read the traits of Sagittarius and…. nope that is just not me… so what I really want to know is, after this many years, when should I expect these traits to take me over?? Will it be a easy slow take over, or will I just wake up one day and be a different person??
Just curious, cause that drastic of change would seem to require a little preparation, ya know.

oh and on a side note,

TT,
Article 165, subsection 129b and d, inverted to paragraph 187-294, subsection 8f was sent this morning.

219

Zee 01.16.11 at 12:14 pm

I watched an….wait for it….ALL MALE panel this morning on CNN discussing the “gun culture” and political landscape and their relation to the Tuscon shootings.

I was pleased that they had one guy, at least, who pointed out that Jared Loughner had been obsessed with Giffords long before anyone knew who Sarah Palin was. But of course the entire discussion devolved into a Palin-bashfest.

At one point two of the guyz started arguing about whether Sarah Palin knew the meaning of “blood libel.” Richard Cohen of the WP, whom I detest, surprised me by defending Palin’s usage as proper in the metaphorical sense. But in the obligatory fashion of defending Sarah Palin without offending the Bashists, he had to add in the standard I’m-not-saying-she’s-not-an-idiot declaimer. So he said she obviously had no idea of the history of the phrase yet somehow inadvertently used it correctly in a broader sense.

Another guy vehemently argued that she very much knew what it meant and had used it in an EEEEEEVIL fashion. Then added, “Are you saying she’s too stupid to know what it meant?”

And Cohen replied, “How much time do we have left to talk about how stupid Palin is?”

::thud:: as dances would put it.

And indeed, that was how the show ended because they were out of time for their distinguished white-guy panel.

220

Dragonfly 01.16.11 at 12:36 pm

Zee, I am so glad I don’t watch tv. These insufferable idiots! They have to bash Sarah Palin because they are too stupid to come up with intelligent conversation. It’s a wonder any woman runs for office these days – she’ll either have a Nutcracker made of her or a urinal target with her face on it or an effigy dressed like her or bashed on tv constantly or shot in the head.

regarding the woman who resigned, yes it could be constructive dischage (that that is harder and harder to prove too) as TT points out. And yes she could be transferred to a different store. there must be a policy or handbook regarding what to do if you are harassed or better yet bullied. she needs to follow the policy and ask for reinstatement at another store.

Dragonfly, the urinal target!!!! I’m compiling a list, thanks…

I’m also thinking video game targets. Alllllll the modern hip postpartisan postfeminist self-proclaimed “progressive” yout’ (youth in cousin Vinnyese) say the women raped and slaughtered in video games are “not real.” But suddenly, because she lists one congresswoman’s name amongst many other Dem congressmen’s names Sarah Palin is putting a target on a PERSON. Never mind that Daily Kos listed her name, too.

What a perfect storm .

Want to give us women some encouraging news about the Statistics on Rape Cases being on the decline!

Woo Hoo! Can you Believe it?!

DON’T!

Herlocaust has been covering some stories on rape – looking into Statistics, Trends and Judicial Cases:

Here you go: Want to know why “Rape Case” statistics are so askew?

This provides only 3 glaring examples. However, there are many other factors that are also contributing to the alleged “Decline in Rape Cases” and it is happening at many law enforcement agencies all over the country:

Mobile police hide rapes from public | October 17, 2010

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Police Department reported 37 forcible rapes to the FBI last year. Press-Register reporters learned about just 13 of them, in some cases after calling police to inquire about tips from readers.

Police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said rape cases are often withheld from the public because many are “domestic rapes” that “do not pose a threat to the community.”

:snip:

“Attempted rapes — which the FBI defines as forcible rapes — are reported to the FBI as assaults.”

:snip:

As with the report about the rape of the 13-year-old girl, the copy of the police report given to the Press-Register about the sodomy crime was largely blank.

It is this type of crime that the Police Department reports to the FBI as an assault, Levy said, rather than a rape”

http://blog.al.com/live/2010/10/mobile_police_hide_rapes_from.html

So, let us get this straight about Law Enforcement in Alabama and their reporting of ACTUAL RAPE CASES:

*Rape cases are often withheld from the public because many are “domestic rapes” that “do not pose a threat to the community.”?

* Even the Rape of a 13 year old was reported as “Assault”?

* Attempted Rapes are reported to the FBI as “ASSAULTS”?

So the FBI’s Crime Reports are not reporting the actual statistics on Rape and Attempted Rape, because of how municipal law enforcement agencies do not Report Them AS Rapes or Attempted Rapes

Conclusion: “RAPE STATISTICS” are declining because RAPE CASES ARE NOT BEING REPORTED AS “RAPES”.

There you have it Women and Girls. Feel Safer Now – thanks to the efficiencies of Law Enforcement, resulting in actual Prosecutions of Rapists for Rape?

Get over it. We’re just Women.

Thank you BCL:

I should have posted the link to the Herlocaust Post(s) – it just makes me so nervous and I don’t want to detract from Murphy’s blog:

Here is the latest being covered on this:

Raped? Calling it “Assault” Makes the Statistics on Rape Sound Better

But, there is a whole lot going on about how the statistics on Rape are being minimized – it’s happening in others states, as well – and Rapes of Women and Girls are on the rise around the world)

“Nashville police are reclassifying hundreds of sexual assault claims after an investigation found deliberate distortions of statistics, of which one victim said, “I felt like I was raped a second time. They stripped me of any right that I had.” Jezebel | Author Irin Carmon | Jan 11, 2011 | “The Depressing Realities Of Rape Statistics”

The Reason that I am Posting is that we are asking:

“Does the Threat of Sexual Assault of Women and Girls, or the Act of Sexual Assault of Women and Girls, or the Escalation in the Number of Incidents of Sexual Assault Committed Against Women and Girls matter to You? If so,

Tell Your Local Law Enforcement Agency: “Calling Rape “Rape” and getting the Statistics on Rape right, Matters To Me.”

One more thing: I thought you all may appreciate:

This is from a commenter “Gavin” – on another one of the posts we did on “Accused Rapist Badgers His Victim – In The Courtroom | A Rapist is Rapist is a Rapist” that I thought other women may appreciate. I did, and it’s what a feminist man sounds like to me:

What you are saying loud and clear is that men could stop rape.

You are right. We do feel entitled and do blame women to the point of disrespecting them for giving in to satisfying our sexual drive. Not sure that debasing women for acting out upon a purely perceived dependency is primordial, but it certainly is an adolescent mentality that can last a lifetime. We do not want to hear that or take individual responsibility for that part of our human development, which only we can do.

As protagonists of the fantasy of a lion and his pride or master of his harem, sexually objectifying women perpetuates fulfillment of those fantasies as the means to an end, whether through the pornographic or as sexual conquerors, one woman at a time.

The trend of minimizing further the long established definition of rape, through advertising, entertainment and how law enforcement is now inclined to handle such cases, does appear to be moving more toward normalizing sexual aggression, unless it inflicts severe bodily injury or is committed in concert with other crimes.

If women are losing ground on this front of the war on violence against women, it does not bode well for society. As we can see with the wars against racism, poverty, drugs and domestic violence, the cost of the damage of a complicit, complacent society far outweigh whatever investment we should have made to curtail their escalation. We seriously miscalculated their compounding force.

Those are my thoughts on your post. I fully agree with your points. Well done.

Gavin

You are awesome. After that horrifying news of the propaganda campaign, it was good to read the words of a feminist who also happens to have a y chromosome. Rare, they are, and priceless. If only there had been more of them thousands of years ago when the Goddess was raped and dismembered in the warrior god mythologies. Misogyny was given legitimacy in the so called heroics of Marduk, among other sources. Rape is misogynistic terrorism, and to see that it is characterized as not a threat when ‘domestic’ infuriates me. Yep, that is why marital rape was not illegal for centuries in this land of the free.

Zee 01.17.11 at 2:52 pm

wbd, my take??? My take is that we’re living in the middle of The Body Snatchers, in real time. If I knew why the pod-progressives are a-ok with Zero’s gender apartheid health care, where women are dictated to about their medical decisions, I’d be one of them. All I know is that Islam gets a big fat pass, and it’s mandatory to say alllllll the other religions are the “same” orrrr that it’s not Islam it’s “local customs” or “extremists” if you talk about child brides and acid-burning women and castrating girls, etc.

It doesn’t seem to bother the pod-progressives that the stoning of a 13 yr old who was raped was not an “extremist” or “terrorist” attack, but the sentence imposed by their LAW.

And inevitably if you bring up the burqa, the guyz rush to say how the “women like it.”

It doesn’t even matter who’s president. Islam gets a pass. I would say that the overriding principle is “tolerance and inclusion” — except for the fact that the norm for the pod progressives is to bash Catholicism. Say “I don’t know how women could be Catholic” and no one bats an eye and all the pods agree. Say “I don’t know how any woman could be Islamic” (with vastly more justification) and you’re a backward, intolerant, racist.

Women are still slaves. The pod-consensus is that people shouldn’t own other people…except if the abuse is of women, that’s a local, family, tradition, custom, etc etc, and we shouldn’t interfere with how the menfolk run things, because it’s the women passing on these “traditions” anyway, blah blah blah.

Same as there is no rape…it’s “marginal date rape” at most.

Grand jury probes what Edwards knew about spending

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal criminal investigation targeting John Edwards is examining how much the two-time presidential candidate knew about money used to cover up his extramarital affair and out-of-wedlock child and whether other practices of his violated campaign finance laws, people involved in the case have told The Associated Press.

A federal grand jury in Raleigh, N.C., is sifting records and testimony involving several political organizations and individuals connected to Edwards to determine if the former North Carolina senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee broke any laws. A recently issued subpoena focuses on a web of these Edwards-affiliated groups, according to subpoena details provided to the AP that offer a glimpse behind the closed doors of the investigation.

The case largely stems from money spent to keep Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter, in hiding along with former campaign aide Andrew Young, who initially claimed paternity so Edwards could continue pursuing the White House without the taint of the affair.

TT
I went through the same surgery in my thirties. 6 weeks of no driving, no stairs, just rest. Had to sit on the patio while my ex-husband accidently burned down my pear trees while he was supposedly clearing an overgrown patch at the bottom of a steep hill which I could not go down to stop him because it would pull the stitches out. My first trip out of the house was to drive myself to the doctor’s for my 6 week checkup. But, when I got to the car my house and car keys were not in my purse because I hadn’t been out of the house for all those weeks. Luckily I found a neighbor to climb in a bedroom window and bring my keys out. Remember the whole experience like it was yesterday.

No, he was not “shaking his fist”, his mostly closed hand was gesturing to add emphasis.
Doesn’t he say and do enough obviously inappropriate things without anyone having to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find ways to criticize him??

282

Headclunker 01.17.11 at 9:45 pm

DWP,

Closed hand or fist, it is still not an appropriate gesture for the occasion. That whole deal being turned in to a rally gives me the creeps.

Dragonfly 01.17.11 at 10:13 pm

DWP 281 are you really taking up for him? thanks for the laugh, I needed it! I am procrastinating.

wow, BCL 279, I winced reading that about the pear trees. Nothing you could do – except divorce him. My ex probably would have burned down the trees on purpose to punish me for being incapacitated. blah.

Ditto wbd 275

TT, listen to goofsmom – she recently revealed she is a Scorpio Sun. It is best to obey Scorpio Sun women, I have found (raised by two of them). :-)

And goofsmom, TT, Zee, DWP, all of you who were worried, Ophiuchus is not getting his own sign, all is well. It’s all explained here:

and yes, TT, I am getting to work again. Making the 4th pot of coffee in 36 hours.

Just to clarify, I would never think of telling you what to do. ;)

Look at it this way, the more you fret about not being up, the slower you will heal. It’s kind of like watching a pot, waiting for it to boil.

goddess bless Historiann! She put that NYTimes O fluffer in his place!!!

for calling the Zero memorial address comparable to the Gettysburg address.

http://www.historiann.com/2011/01/16/some-people-learn-nothing-forget-everything-and-cant-shoot-straight/#more-13891

And pardon me for dropping a turd in the punchbowl, but if it were my child, or husband, or parent who had been gunned down senselessly, I would be some pissed off if anyone suggested that his or her death had any larger meaning…Death is oblivion, so premature, violent death is an unforgiveable theft. If anything happens as a result of this latest gun-fueled massacre of the innocents, let’s hope it’s something a little more important than rearranging the deck chairs seating chart for the State of the Union Address on the Titanic, or calls of more “civility” in the “discourse.”

294

TexasTigress 01.18.11 at 6:18 am

I like how she called him out for practicing for the SOTU address, but my fave was how she introduced the topic:

“Garry Wills compares Barack Obama’s speech in Tucson to Abraham Lincoln’s speech at Gettysburg… For realz! Gaze on in slack-jawed horror: ”

Historiann’s blog is specifically about history and women, and her regulars all seem to be teachers or professors. She never indicates she reads up on the PUMA blogs, but I love how her group is not fooled for a minute by The Zero. She’s used the word “Hopium” too!

——————-
Not a completely closed hand.
Your complaint should be about the campaign rally memorial…
to drag in a gesture captured in still photo and deem it an inappropriate gesture for a memorial service is ludicrous and diminishes credibility.
Besides that, how do you claim your critique when this entire conversation began with you asking for opinions and judgements regarding still photos of obama from the memorial. If you had watched it you’d realize that you are making a mountain out of a non-existent molehill and going mountain climbing.

same way I’ve taken up for republicans, palin, and others when the criticisms were absurd.

299

Dragonfly 01.18.11 at 10:45 am

sorry Dances, didn’t follow the exchange because I am fairly brain dead from my insane work schedule complicated by what TT calls “procrastination.” I love Headclunker even if she is climbing a mountain that is not there. I haven’t even checked the links – being an Aquarian Sun, I have that audacious and annoying habit of commenting before reading on the assumption that I instinctively know what is going on. Murphy, fortunately, lacks this habit, hence her great success!

Malbec, yummmmm. It’s an Argentinian grape I believe.

TT, perfect description in layperson’s terms of your actual rising sign – it fits, doncha think? ;-)

love to all you PUMAs.

300

Dragonfly 01.18.11 at 10:54 am

Zee 293 – thank you for introducing me to devastatingly sharp Historian. I cracked up reading that. Maybe cackled. ;-) As PUMAs know, I LOVE Abraham Lincoln (some Amazon Angel gave me my favorite biography of him!), so it was even more enjoyable than a laugh, it was being inspired yet again by Lincoln’s tender words. Now he could give a speech. Unlike Historian, I believe something happens next – reincarnation. Here’s hoping Lincoln comes back as our next president, now that his spirit is currently known as HRC, our Sublime Secretary of State.

okay, TT, I’ll stop procrastinating. Carafe of GOOD coffee ready, the machine just sang its little happy tune that has an effect on me like the bell for Pavlov’s dog. . .. . yes, my coffee cup says Caffeine Junkie. There are no meetings for this addiction, and Let Go Let God does not write a brief. Just sayin’

I’m not sure if anyone here reads the WH Insider on News Flavor. It’s all such fascinating stuff, but I’m not sure whether or not to believe it.

In this edition the Insider claims that Hillary is now weighing options for 2016:

http://newsflavor.com/politics/world-politics/white-house-insider-obama-celebrates-shortly-after-delivering-tucson-memorial-speech/

It’s the 3rd question down.

302

Dragonfly 01.18.11 at 11:29 am

thanks Delle – I loved reading the criticism of the narcissist. any more barf bags Zee?

The best part of the bit on Hillary was the notion that Pelosi would have backed her and shifted away from Obama. Too bad that is not coming to fruition. Pelosi would be forever redeemed for me if she did that. Too bad it is circulating she has damaging info on him. Considering the State of the Union, I would not be surprised if she drowned in her hot tub. Pelosi ought to clamp down on the rumor, discredit it, then when the time is right to help Hillary, she ought to seclude herself in a safe place and get Assange to put out a leak.

Hillary is not allowed to retire. Letter writing campaign PUMAs, come on! Let’s flood her with handwritten notes, drawings by our daughters and granddaughters, quotes from her books, whatever it takes!

303

Delle 01.18.11 at 11:34 am

http://nation.foxnews.com/arizona-shooting-rampage/2011/01/18/tucson-shooting-victim-there-would-be-torture-and-then-ear-neckl

He’d like to sever the ears of republicans and have them made into an ear necklace.

Sounds like a rational, intelligent man, right?

I do know that this isn’t funny, but I don’t know why I can’t stop laughing. Maybe so that I don’t cry.

304

Zee 01.18.11 at 1:08 pm

Our stock has been recently depleted, but here, dragonfly, we do have sufficient barf bags left!

Regarding the high five….it’s rumor, but I don’t doubt it. A house down the street from mine burned down a few years ago…horrifically, a young woman committed suicide by burning it, and herself, to death. The neighbors were all solemnly gathered and the local news channels were there. After the reporter gave his spiel in front of the fiery grave, he and the cameraman gave each other high fives for their “scoop.”

Then, the looked over and saw our horrified faces and became chagrined and apologized, adding that they knew it was not the time or place for celebrating.

I don’t think it’s all that uncommon for people in the “business” (whatever that business may be) to seem callous of the tragedies they are accustomed to dealing with. Morbid humor from funeral directors, oncologists, etc.

There is a time and place, tho…and it’s not in the presence of those grieving.

305

Zee 01.18.11 at 1:10 pm

omg, delle..! The details of the ear necklace, down to how he would arrange them according to size…craziness.

306

wontbackdown 01.18.11 at 1:52 pm

Sorry, but “Vatican Rule” sounds a lot like Radical Islamic Rule to me:

“Child-abuse activists in Ireland said the 1997 letter should demonstrate, once and for all, that the protection of pedophile priests from criminal investigation was not only sanctioned by Vatican leaders but ordered by them.

“The letter is of huge international significance, because it shows that the Vatican’s intention is to prevent reporting of abuse to criminal authorities. And if that instruction applied here, it applied everywhere,” said Colm O’Gorman, director of the Irish chapter of human rights watchdog Amnesty International.

To this day, the Vatican has not endorsed any of the Irish church’s three major policy documents since 1996 on safeguarding children from clerical abuse. Irish taxpayers, rather than the church, have paid most of the euro1.5 billion ($2 billion) to more than 14,000 abuse claimants dating back to the 1940s.

Well, I tried to find the ear necklace story on any news outlet. Only in the New York Post (who interviewed him the day before he got arrested and were the original source) and Fox News.

Oh, and when he threatened “You’re dead” and was sent to a mental health institution, guess what the Pods are saying about that? Just give one little guess.

“Sarah Palin advocates violence and she doesn’t get arrested.”

I was not attempting to deem anything. Perhaps I should have said that it seemed to me to be inappropriate as a closed hand or a fist. My intention was to foster some discussion because I am curious about other perspectives on it. It seems to me that he looks angry and his gesture goes with it.

Do you really think this blog needs to be “defended” from such a discussion?

Zee 01.18.11 at 7:48 pm

omfg…where will the bottom be? How low will the boyz go?

File this one under “woman lynching.” Did murphy call this one with that term, or what? I mean literal depictions of women lynching.

Kanye West’s newest video. I’ll link to it thru TGW….there’s a petition to sign, too, against its being aired on MTV.
http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/

The lyrics are something about being lonely and would you die for love tonight. The IMAGES are of young white women strung up by the neck in chains, apparently dead, clad only in string bikini lingerie. Some of the dead women are propped up in bed and Kanye and Jay Z and others move their arms and heads and kiss them. One of the dead women lies sprawled on a table while one of the guys eats meat.

And this was just a small clip of the entire video.

Anyone have words to describe this?

312

Zee 01.18.11 at 7:50 pm

Oh, I have a question for the Palin Bashists:

if a gang of boys choke a bunch of girls to death and defile their dead bodies, will they blame Kanye, or defend Art and Free Speech?

One of the girls reported having trouble taking a test she was shaking so badly.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/3360990-418/list-girl-students-girls-ranking.html

After distributing the fliers to other male students Friday afternoon, the author walked to the student center… He is captured on one cell phone video hollering, “Women are the future, unless we stop them now,” as he danced around to a cheering crowd of students.

Murphy, Dances, Everyone:

I would like to ask you all to participate in an !Urgent Prowl!

One of the groups that I belong to is really attempting to get word out for participation in an email campaign to Uganda’s Parliament on the “Anti-Homosexual” measures being pushed for a February 2011 vote.

Nobody does an Email Prowl better than PUMAS.

1) If I get all of Uganda’s Parliament email addresses to you, Dances and or Murphy – which are ready (160) – along with the cover letter – would you be willing to send it as a Prowl to Pumas?

2) Would Pumas be willing to do this Prowl?

Here is what is at stake:

“An anti-homosexuality bill now before Uganda’s Parliament includes some of the harshest anti-gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) regulations in the world. If a proposed new bill passes in February 2011, it could bring a new kind of genocide to this troubled corner of the world. Tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands could die. No exaggeration. It must not happen!

Homosexuality is already legally a crime in Uganda that can lead long prison sentences. An anti-homosexuality bill has been introduced calling for the death penalty for those convicted of repeated same-sex relations. It could also lead to the execution of HIV positive Ugandan citizens, and further proposes to make it a criminal offense not to report family members who may be suspected of being GLBT! The bill stalled after an international outcry, though it has not been scrapped and is still being considered.

Uganda’s lawmakers seem to have been swept along by a sickening tide of misinformation supplied by some religious right, anti-gay extremists from the U.S. These individuals have played a major role in organizing and inspiring Ugandan legislators who have spearheaded the proposed anti-gay law, with other African countries watching—including Kenya.”

Would you please consider joining in sending as many emails as possible to the Parliament of Uganda – speaking out against these bills?

No, for me it’s more about defending from right wing lunacy. What’s to discuss? One photo, taken during a 30 minute speech without the benefit of sound nor context. Is the hand open, closed, angry, emphatic? It the hand in an appropriate posture for a memorial service? Should his hand have been opened more? Would it be more appropriate to have used Pointer instead of the entire group of curled fingers? Dors anyone know if he had a manicure for this occasion? Was it at taxpayers expense? Was his use of his left hand a subliminal gesture meaningful to he left or the black community?
Why was he ignoring his right hand?
Is the showing of any hand appropriate at a memorial service?

325

On my way out for five days …
But, I’m in.
Are we including our “governors” as well?

326

Zee 01.19.11 at 11:33 am

wbd, I did a lot of searching but can’t find any source for this impending vote in Uganda. I read a lot of conflicting news about it from last year. Some say it’s fizzled out, others say they’d dropped the death sentence, others say the president there plans to veto it. I did find one source who said he’d been “privately” advised that they would vote on this before May….but I find it hard to credit him, since he is a Christian ex-gay “shrink” who “cures” people’s sexual identities.

You got this from an email group….is there a link to the source? I kept looking for a recent story….

There is a ton of information out there on the American fundie influence on Uganda, and it’s despicable. Rick Warren, Zero’s buddy, is neck-deep in it, too. Here are some links to how these fundies ignited this fire in the first place:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/world/africa/04uganda.html

http://www.publiceye.org/magazine/v24n4/us-christian-right-attack-on-gays-in-africa.html

327

Zee 01.19.11 at 11:51 am

Well, I have no more time to look, but it appears that this biblical “gender-identification” specialist is the prime and only source for the impending February vote in Uganda. He may well be correct…it may be that misinfo is being dispersed that the bill has fizzled so that they can vote and pass this legislation without the pesky world community weighing in and pressuring Uganda. Besides the death penalty, which may or may not be dropped, the bill carries prison sentences for anyone who knows about, and doesn’t report “homosexual activity”—and somehow the bill requires extradition for any Ugandan anywhere in the world caught having sex with a foreigner of the same gender. Sheesh.

It certainly can’t hurt to keep the spotlight on this bill during the final months of their parliament’s session.

328

wontbackdown 01.19.11 at 11:56 am

Hey everyone: Thanks TT

1) The information is from a reliable source. I will get more information for you, so you can decide.

2) Our US “Governors,” Dances?

3) Dances – I didn’t maintain a PUMA email list from other projects – because they originated from “PUMAPAC” and “belong” to it, so to speak – so it’s why I am asking to go through you and/or Murphy.

4) Also, I personally thinks it’s best, given past history, to do most activities – off-blog. See next paragraph.

It is my understanding that because of the worldwide outcry when this first became known through news aganecies – the issue was “toned down.” However, it’s also my understanding that certain “fundamentalist groups” have continued to push the legislation for a vote.

I’ll get the info to the more recent activity and get back with you.

329

wontbackdown 01.19.11 at 12:14 pm

And, thanks goofsmom and Zee.

330

wontbackdown 01.19.11 at 12:19 pm

Oh, and call me “paranoid” about “off-blog” activities – but, I believe we all have a lot of experience with:

1) Put it out to the Public so they can say we were “informed” 2) Let the public react 3)”Manage opposition” in a myriad of ways 4) Once things die down, and the public thinks it’s been “heard” – pass the damned legislation.

Obama “suddenly appeared out of nowhere”? Lots of Lesson’s to be learned there.

So the men just tell the boys to act “LIKE A MAN” so they do……
*************************
I gotta tell a true story about men teaching the boys how to be men, only these were male elephants. There had been so much elephant poaching in Africa that the big males with the big tusks were hunted out in one area, and there were only teenaged males left. These young males acted like out of control teenagers harassing all the other animals and even chasing rhinos and killing some. After they got the poaching under control, wildlife managers decided to bring in some big older males to teach them the proper way an adult male acts in elephant society. Worked like a charm – the teenagers learned they were not so tough and that they had to follow herd etiquette. Where are the adult male humans when these boys act immature?

Just got back a little while ago – as things went than planned.

Thanks IR. Am getting back on prowl as soon as I have some dinner.

I just need to divide the list into groups of 30 names email addys and put commas between them all. Makes it easier to send multiple emails at once in CC line that way and not get blocked as a spammer (I learned that here).

Will send you an email when finished.

Thanks!

Thanks Goofsmom:

There are many that are following this issue because it is not over yet – many Ugandan politicians are for this Bill: It is not being covered in the mainstream media but it has not been “shelved” – according to those who are continuing to seek information on where the Bill “stands”.

Please read:

Reporters say anti-gay bill has been shelved – Ugandan politicians disagree | January 10th, 2011

“On the other hand, Jeff Sharlet reported a conversation with Bahati on the matter. CNN interviewed David Bahati who said clearly that the bill would be considered. In November, Bahati told me that the bill would be considered before the Parliament ended in May. He confirmed that again to Rachel Maddow in December when he was in the US. Finally, Stephen Tashobya, the chair of the Ugandan committee which has jurisdiction over the bill, told me that the Anti-Homosexuality would be considered after the nation holds elections in February. Today, he said nothing has changed.

Back in January, 2010, President Yoweri Museveni told his party members that the supporters of the bill needed to work with the Europeans and Americans on the issue; he did not say to shelve it – at least in public. Some sources have told me on the condition of anonymity that Museveni has assured the US that the bill will be vetoed. However, he has not to my knowledge said that publicly. Mr. Tashobya told me that the President has not indicated any position on the situation to him. Tashobya also told me he has no reason to think that the President will not allow the bill to become law, with possible amendments.

Ok Dances:

I’ll send it to you and leave it up to you whether you want to pass it on to your PUMA email list… or not… it’s about a major Human Rights issue, in a country that still thinks genocides and rape of women and girls as just… a little dust here and there and a few spots on the window.

H/T to SYD blog roll for the links.

Link to petition via TNA to protest Kanye West video:

Link to TNA article re the protest petition:

Note from CJK (had to re-register for some reason): While the LSM and Obamacrats drone on with platitudes about more ‘civil political discourse’ — a euphemism for censoring anyone who disagrees with their positions — their misogynistic patriarchal power structure looks the other way while the woman-hatred continues to fester and spread…

CJK2 01.20.11 at 1:23 pm

My comment 355 is in moderation. I tried to post a couple of links to a TNA article and protest petition re the Kanye West ‘Monster’ video. Apologies if this has already been posted on the thread. I don’t post much any more, and, for some reason, I had to re-register in order to log in. So, now I’m CJK2. Thanks. (((((PUMAS)))))

I love that story…and it also makes me immeasurably sad. Why is it we don’t learn from and cherish and protect elephants? They hold funerals. They’re a people.

Throckmorton is the only source. He gives me the creeps because I can’t tell if he thinks the bill is a good idea or not. He seems to be reassuring his followers that the bill is on…in a cloaked fashion.

However, any source in a storm, I guess! If they are trying to quietly celebrate this, no reason not to rain on their anti-gay parade.

Zee: Either way, Good deduction. The Bill IS NOT dead, Stupak was not a harmless blowhard and Bush policies are a way of life.

The best I can do is
1 Forward it and bring it to M’s attention
2- Participate in your prowl privately
3-forward it to anyone who requests it via actioncenter@pumapac dot org

PS I’m out of town for the next four days.

PPS
Have you shared it with Betty Jean, and any other blogs you frequent, for wider dissemination?

Got it covered, Dances.

Re-formatting the master email list of the recipients to an easily distributable format was what was most important.

That’s done and in the right hands for redistribution to large groups.

Have a productive trip.

Zee 01.21.11 at 12:39 pm

wbd…so you’ve seen all the rumblings about Roe in the GOP “sights” to use the common terminology no longer PC to say.

We’re going to be facing a double attack on SS and reproduction rights. With jug ears getting to blame the Republicans for his own marching orders/inner accord.

I’ve been out amongst the Obots and have been snapping their heads off when they regurgitate that crap about Palin saying “blood libel.” And they talk about “faux news” viewers. They’re regurgitating shit they know nothing about. If it’s such a well-known insult, how come none of them ever heard of it before and/or never raised hell when many others used it before SP? It’s just a saving face non-issue raised to distract from the fact that the AZ shooter was obsessed with Gabby from before Palin was on the scene and so their immediate Palin pile-on was an embarrassing epic fail.

368

Zee 01.21.11 at 12:44 pm

TT, I hadn’t heard that…but the motorcycle-cade seems perfect…every indication points to Gabby being a feisty survivor…I believe she will rise again to her full potential!

omg, NYS, I’m off to see what now from the DUdies…

I was not able to copy a link, but over at TGW (tn guerilla women) they have a youtube up of a Hillary for 2012 ad!!!!! It aired on NBC this week.

369

wontbackdown 01.21.11 at 4:22 pm

Zee: Yes. the “rumblings” are ideological “code” language – speaking loudly to those who are so conditioned to its nuances, it doesn’t need a megaphone to rally and keep the “tribes” attacking the “enemy” of its fundamental beliefs or primary purposes.

Sometimes you just have to mirror their own bs back at them. They’ll either see the hypocrisy or try and use it against you to cover their ass and kill the messenger. Either way, you will know when the message will survive the messenger. If that was the intent and that happens, it’s all good.

Is this the Hillary “ad” that you are talking about?
