In strategizing with his fellow (and I do mean “fellow”) members of Journolist, Spencer Ackerman, then of the Nation, was arguing with the group against rising to the bait and either defending or criticizing Jeremiah Wright. He said:
“If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them — Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists. Ask: why do they have such a deep-seated problem with a black politician who unites the country? What lurks behind those problems? This makes *them* sputter with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction.”
There you have it, Folks. Right out in the plain light of day. Spokespeople and actual journalists, being paid salaries by legitimate news organizations, calling people racists, simply as a STRATEGY. Explicitly. What a bunch of stupid idiots. And lord are they fond of their pretentious cliches: “It’s not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wright’s defense,” and “And I think this threads the needle.” Read any of their emails over at the Daily Caller and you can’t help but laugh at their hopeless affectations and their juvenile need to impress the other members of their Super Double Secret Club of Smarty Pantses with their lofty erudition, or at least their familiarity with the most popular cliches of those who want to be seen as lofty, and erudite.

Holy smokes. There really WAS a vast conspiracy of ACTUAL journalists, including Joe Klein of Time, to take down Palin. (h/t hillbuzz)
“Daniel Levy of the Century Foundation noted that Obama’s “non-official campaign” would need to work hard to discredit Palin. “This seems to me like an occasion when the non-official campaign has a big role to play in defining Palin, shaping the terms of the conversation and saying things that the official [Obama] campaign shouldn’t say…I think people should be replicating some of the not-so-pleasant viral email campaigns that were used against [Obama].
…but doesn’t leaving sad baby without its mother while she campaigns weaken that family values argument? Or will everyone be too afraid to make that point?”
…Keep the ideas coming! Have to go on TV to talk about this in a few min and need all the help I can get”

Feminism, O Feminism, why have thou forsaken me:
“Suzanne Nossel, chief of operations for Human Rights Watch, added a novel take: “I think it is and can be spun as a profoundly sexist pick. Women should feel umbrage at the idea that their votes can be attracted just by putting a woman, any woman, on the ticket no matter her qualifications or views.”
Mother Jones’s Stein loved the idea. “That’s excellent! If enough people – people on this list? – write that the pick is sexist, you’ll have the networks debating it for days. And that negates the SINGLE thing Palin brings to the ticket,” he wrote.”

journolisters rejoice about obama’s election 2008:
LAURA ROZEN, MOTHER JONES (NOW POLITICO): Can you imagine if these bozos had won?
JEFFREY TOOBIN, THE NEW YORKER: As a side note, does anyone know what prompted Michael Barone to go insane?
MATT DUSS: LEDEEN.
SPENCER ACKERMAN: Let’s just throw Ledeen against a wall. Or, pace Dr. Alterman, throw him through a plate glass window. I’ll bet a little spot of violence would shut him right the fuck up, as with most bullies.
JOE KLEIN, TIME: Pete Wehner…these sort of things always end badly.

Here are a couple of examples of the new disconnect in media coverage now. The headline is ‘Sherrod says she’d love to talk race with Obama.’
WASHINGTON – Former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod said Thursday she wants to discuss racial issues with President Obama, who’s “not someone who has experienced some of the things I’ve experienced in life.”
Obama said nothing publicly about the developments while administration officials tried to both show his concern and to distance him from the original ouster. (Huh?)
And a sudden switch to the passive voice to absolve all parties of any direct blame:
The president had been briefed, Gibbs said, and “he talked about the fact that a disservice had been done, an injustice had happened and, because the facts had changed, a review of the decision based on those facts should be taken.”
In other words ‘mistakes were made’, but no one made them.

Hi Murph and Dances! I’m down in PR caught in a tropical wave or something pouring buckets on us while PA I hear burns. Had to squeeze some time on my son’s laptop, but at least I have WIFI!
Unbelievable info on this post-I actually feel sick to see the evil revealed. Thanks though.
My cable pkg doesn’t include FOX, so I’ve been watching CNN and it’s almost RACE RACE RACE all the time. The coverage of Palin is mostly reluctant, critical, or dismissive. But Quinniac poll 7/21 says she’s more influential with voters than BO. Soory, can,t link.
bbl?
BigCatLover 07.22.10 at 9:10 am
The Journolist story just reinforces what we all knew from the beginning that the fix was in to put Obama in the WH and nothing was too outrageous to say by our press and tv and radio media to get this done. If anything happens to these people’s careers from this revelation, I’ll be shocked. I once again refer people to the October 2004 article in the Chicago magazine profiling Michelle Obama and her exercise routine and her admiration for Hillary Clinton that was titled “First Lady in Waiting?” That’s 2004 folks.

Yup! That’s why bi-racial boy of priviledge could afford to toss the race card into the mix… he had not more than a small clue of racial discrimination in this country, nor was he going to suffer the consequences of any backlash.

Our press consists of the righteous right and the looney left and as long as cable and the internet exists, I don’t see this changing.
Alert, alert! Russ Feingold is in a neck and neck race with his opponent in the Senate seat race for Wisconsin. Just letting Feingold admirers know. I’m a wary supporter but he mostly is a true progressive voter (he’s male so I remain wary).

I don’t think Feingold gets much support from his party so he’s vulnerable for lack of campaign funds. The mention on Washington Journal this morning said there was a primary in Sept so I guess his opponent is actually a dem. He’s disagreed publically with Obama a couple of times on bills so I guess he’s targeted for defeat.

From the Christian Science Monitor link above:
The Washington Post has already accepted the resignation of Mr. Weigel, who had been assigned to report on the conservative movement in America. But some media critics wonder if the Weigel case points to something larger.
“The big question for news organizations is to figure out how institutionalized [these views have become],” says Jim Campbell, a political scientist at the State University of New York in Buffalo. “Is the Post, for example, going to move beyond firing this one guy and look to see whether others have done the same thing? Are they going to throw Woodward and Bernstein at their own newsroom? I kind of doubt it.”
Hooray, one of them is gone from his platform and yes, that is the question.

Unfortunately, this is more like what I expect from the big media organizations:
So far, news organizations like the Post and National Public Radio, whose journalists took part in the list and have been quoted by the Daily Caller, are staying mostly mum about the scoop. The Post – which is at the center of the JournoList debacle because the list was run by Post reporter Ezra Klein – has declined comment, citing it as a “personnel matter.”

I thought he had been offered a deal by the WH to shut up so Emanuel, Rezko, etc. would not have to take the stand, but the news is reporting that the prosecution ended their case weeks before they were supposed to and did not call certain witnesses that were supposed to testify against Blago. so Blago’s defense team decided to stop now and not give the prosecution a chance to cross examine Blago. Maybe the WH made a deal with both sides. Maybe not.

Murphy, this whole behind the scenes “journalist” story sure is an eyeopener even though many suspected and definitely observed it day after day during the primaries
and none of us could quite put our finger on all the softness on Obama while everyone else was either thrown under a bus or like Palin was subjected then as is still the case today of eternal bashing. Im quite sure Shirley Sherrod will come out on top of this entire
‘whatever it is.’
Meanwhile, when you really look at things the way they stand now today, you have to ask yourself some of these questions?
1. Would we know who Sarah Palin is, if Obama had picked Hillary to be his VP?
2. Would we know who Gov Jan Brewer is if he hadnt picked
Janet Napolitino as Secretary of National Security?
3. Would there be birthers if the President had actually posted his “real” live birth certificate online or had been asked to produce it by his own party?
4. Would there be a Tea Party if his policies had not gotten our country in eternal debt? Or if the healthcare debate had been totally bipartisan with many repubs invovled
in and voting for it after a true reach across the aisle to bring it to a floor vote without all the backroom deals?
5. Would Louisianians be better off today had our President responded more quickly with a great team of experts and made it his priority from day one?
It seems to me, while all the the above questions may never be answered, he has played a vital role in each of these decisions.
I watched online the huge 11,000 turnout at the Cajun Dome yesterday for Louisianians wanting to go back to work. It was simply daunting to watch so many americans begging for help.
here’s a small clip of Goverer Jindal’s speech, but he was powerful and laid it all out from day one til now what happend. This is just a clip.

“Blogosphere, please join me in celebrating the birth of Cabalist, the wittily-named successor to Ezra Klein’s infamous Journolist, the listserv of liberal bloggers, pundits and academics that inadvertently brought down (very temporarily) the ex-Washington Post blogger Dave Weigel, and which is now the subject of an endless and embarrassing (for certain former Journolist participants) investigation by The Daily Caller, which has discovered e-mail chains suggesting that certain Journolist members were secretly devising partisan campaigns to advance Democratic Party interests.
Hence, the birth of the heretofore secret Cabalist, which unlike Journolist, has only 173 members, rather than 400, but which in other ways resembles Journolist (such as in the propensity of Cabalist members to leak ostensibly private information to non-Cabalist members, including to yours truly). The 173 members are mainly veterans of Journolist, and don’t ask me what happened to the other 227; perhaps they were purged after being judged splitters in secret on-line show trials.”

Nah, you couldnt do that. Im glad she gets a new job offer, Im glad they all made amends. What it did do was get the news off the crippling 14.5 million people in this country that doesnt have a job. Fox was acused of things they didnt do, the game continues on. Just like Murphy’s post, do you really think they are still not deciding how to cover this story to help Obama? ha ha you have got to be kidding. The panel looking into the Cambridge incidident came up with the verdict recently that both parties overreacted and were both equally vunerable in that incident? Did you hear anything about that, nah, nothing has changed. They merely have got Shirley’s outcome straightened out. Ousted official Shirley Sherrod blamed Fox, but other outlets ran with story
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/21/AR2010072106708.html
But for all the chatter — some of it from Sherrod herself — that she was done in by Fox News, the network didn’t touch the story until her forced resignation was made public Monday evening, with the exception of brief comments by O’Reilly. After a news meeting Monday afternoon, an e-mail directive was sent to the news staff in which Fox Senior Vice President Michael Clemente said: “Let’s take our time and get the facts straight on this story. Can we get confirmation and comments from Sherrod before going on-air. Let’s make sure we do this right.”
Sherrod may be the only official ever dismissed because of the fear that Fox host Glenn Beck might go after her. As Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack tried to pressure her into resigning, Sherrod says Deputy Under Secretary Cheryl Cook called her Monday to say “do it, because you’re going to be on ‘Glenn Beck’ tonight.” And for all the focus on Fox, much of the mainstream media ran with a fragmentary story that painted an obscure 62-year-old Georgian as an unrepentant racist.

‘Day late and dollar short’ Obama administration is tying up all the loose ends of a news cycle that’s gotten horribly out of hand for them. First having Obama call Sherrod after saying he wouldn’t do that, and now Fox News is reporting that they have announced the Obamas will be vacationing in the Gulf over the August 14th weekend. Is this admin in full panic mode over criticism of the One?

Sorry I don’t have a link for that news announcement promo from Fox this morning. I haven’t watched all day so I don’t know if they ever followed up with a report. Maybe his attorneys were going to request that the charges be dropped, but I’m just speculating. Aren’t we all tired of both Party’s and haven’t we all come to the smae conclusion, that both are corrupt and neither Party is working for the people, but to advance only themselves?
I left the DP, on june 3rd, after watching what liars and evil doers were doing to the only person on either side, who was capable and strong enough to take over the mess that had accumulated over the past 8 years.
I hope the Independents who left the DP don’t rush to the RP, just because of what is being revealed, but that more Dem. and Rep. leave and become Independents!Maybe by doing that, we will be able to shout out to both party’s, we don’t want you and we don’t like where you’re taking the country.

Latest assault on Title IX, equal rep for women in sports programs. A school tried to cut their women’s volleyball program by calling cheerleading a sport. A federal judge ruled today that cheerleading is not a sport and cannot be counted in Title IX as a sports program for women to equal men’s programs. Said Bill Clinton today in Columbia, SC: “Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in ’84 and ’88. Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here.”
This was in response to a question from ABC News’ David Wright about it taking “two Clintons to beat” Obama. Jackson had not been mentioned.
Boy, I can’t understand why anyone would think the Clintons are running a race-baiting campaign to paint Obama as “the black candidate.”

I started to read the comments and it made my blood pressure go sky high…..
———
Sarah Palin Lashes Out At Media, McCain Campaign And JournoList, Maybe
Sometime Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has heard about the JournoList! And she’s not at all happy about it, according to “exclusive remarks” given to the Daily Caller.
From a remote location on an island off Alaska’s coast, former Governor Sarah Palin is blasting what she describes as the “sick puppies” in the media who immediately and ruthlessly attacked her when Sen. John McCain picked her as his running mate during the 2008 presidential campaign.
In exclusive remarks to The Daily Caller, Palin described “hordes of Obama’s opposition researchers-slash ‘reporters’” descending upon Alaska in the days after she was picked by McCain.
The big “ha-ha!” in all of this is that Palin never herself identifies JournoList by name. JournoList is simply shoehorned into this narrative by Jonathan Strong for fun! But, okay, we’ll just run with this for the time being.
Insofar as JournoList is involved in any of this, we’ll refer you back to a previous Caller piece, which tells the nearly impossible-to-believe story of that time the McCain campaign announced Palin as his running mate, which prompted many JournoListers to take to their laptops to ask each other things like, “Who is Sarah Palin?” and “I’ve never heard of this Sarah Palin person,” and “I wonder how Obama will run against this person, Sarah Palin,” and, “Seriously, I do not know much about Sarah Palin.”
Later, the liberal commentators on this list of liberals would opine that the choice seemed to be a mistake and were critical of Palin — which is something you wouldn’t possibly expect from a group of liberal commentators, right? Anyway, all of this research and criticism apparently resulted in this listicle on Joe Klein’s blog, which was generally regarded as a game-changing moment in the 2008 election.
Palin, in her “exclusive remarks,” does not restrict herself to lashing out at JournoList (if she’s even lashing out at JournoList at all — remember, we are just going with it for the time being.)
She’s also mad at the “hordes of Obama’s opposition researchers-slash ‘reporters’” that came to Alaska (to presumably do the “opposition research” and “reporting” that someone should have told Palin are mainstays in American politics), the McCain campaign (”To not have had the McCain campaign staff defend my record was an insurmountable challenge, because once a bell is rung, it’s impossible to un-ring,” Palin said), and CBS News for broadcasting an interview with Katie Couric that Palin says was “selectively edited.” Palin says that all of these things fed her decision to quit her post as Alaska’s governor.
Story continues below
So that’s the incredibly true story of how JournoList, the McCain campaign, and a camera owned by CBS News that was pointed at Sarah Palin cunningly conspired to get her to quit her job.

Rangel Charged With Ethics Violations
A House investigative panel on Thursday announced multiple ethics charges against Rep. Charles Rangel.
The announcement means the case will go on trial before a separate ethics committee, which will decide whether the alleged violations are backed up by the evidence.
Rangel, a New York Democrat, said he looks forward to the trial. He said Thursday that he’s been asking for the opportunity to explain himself to his constituents for two years.

#14 BCL, I saw that the other day….very worrisome. Russ Feingold is a rare politician, one who follows his own moral code. He alone refused to vote for the Patriot Act…talk about a bill that no one read through before signing on for! Here is an excerpt of why he opposed it:
The proposed bill contained vast new powers for law enforcement, some seemingly drafted in haste and others that came from the FBI’s wish list that Congress has rejected in the past. You may remember that the Attorney General announced his intention to introduce a bill shortly after the September 11 attacks. He provided the text of the bill the following Wednesday, and urged Congress to enact it by the end of the week. That was plainly impossible, but the pressure to move on this bill quickly, without deliberation and debate, has been relentless ever since.
It is one thing to shortcut the legislative process in order to get federal financial aid to the cities hit by terrorism….It is quite another to press for the enactment of sweeping new powers for law enforcement that directly affect the civil liberties of the American people without due deliberation by the peoples’ elected representatives.

I think we could “get away with it” in the same context Shirley did. Once when I witnessed a racist asshole harassing an elderly black man who had bumped into a car in a parking lot, I was thrilled when the police responding to the scene (completely unnecessarily called by the racist “witness”) were black. I thought good…”one of his kind” so he will know exactly what’s going on.
I was wrong, the trooper started frisking the elderly man and I stepped in to report that the bystander had made up the entire “report” he’d called in, since I’d been an actual witness to the entire thing. Turns out, police officers are their *own* kind, too.
We can all make these judgment calls and find out we’re wrong, and tell the story…I tell this story all the time. No one blinks an eye over my momentarily thinking that one of “his own kind” would instantly grasp that this was a baseless charge, especially seeing the age and demeanor of the elderly man. But police have protocol to follow. I understand exactly what Shirley was talking about…and once you see that you’re mistaken, you yourself step in to help.

The First Family really needs to take that vacation in the Gulf on the weekend of Aug 14th. Right now a Tropical Storm Bonnie is headed straight through the mess, surely washing oil scum right up on the shore. http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201003_5day.html#a_topad
Maybe they will have a nice bacterial outbreak just in time for them.
The oil leak has raised the Gulf temperatures and it is like a steambox out here. That extra humidity is going to be feeding storms all season. We are going to be getting “extra training” as emergency responders this hurricane season.

Good grief – accuse someone of racism based on what something “almost sounds” like?? ALMOST sounds like?? Haven’t we had enough of the “he/she’s a raaaaciiiisstt” kneejerk responses crap, because he/ she ‘almost ..’…..–insert offense here — ?
Eventually, someone WILL do something that’s racist & awful, and everyone will look at it and yawn and turn away because of the accusations of it that just weren’t! Can’t we reserve the ‘racist’ label for those that truly are, please?
————
“almost sounds like” was me being polite. If I said what I really believe it would have been more like: You complain every time a racist statement is made by a person of color… about how if “others’ (read: WHITES) said the same thing holy hell would be raised. If you want to say racist things about blacks or minorities, just fucking do it instead of dog whistling every other day, goddamnit.”
But, I didnt say that because I was being as polite as I could be at the time.
and Nikkismom, don’t fucking accuse my response as a kneejerk reaction. I’m damn tired of months, years now, even, of the tolerating dog whistlers, here and in real life. If I had an “ignore” option on this blog, I would use it. I’m sure as hell using it in my real life, finally, thank God.

I do not know. UHD 31 was blacked out when I saw it. Supposedly they have decided to leave the cap on through the storm, last I heard.
The only good decision that could be made about that well is to get it plugged. The monitoring they have been doing does not go down any further that 50 feet or so into the sea bed around the 1,800 ft well. So they literally do not know what they are doing. That well is leaking somewhere.
Zee 07.22.10 at 10:47 pm
Oh….it’s nothing much, altho there is some more detail in the comments. Sen. Barbara Mukulski brought up the comparison and of course the EPA assured her there was “no impact” from Corexit. Sheesh.

Also, regarding the dismissal of the unfairly fired state attorneys scandal. YES, Zerobama wants to avail himself of the same executive power abuses Bush enjoyed. And I think this has a lot to do with why Zero let Dawn Johnsen’s appointment wither—she was eager to prosecute abuses that Zero had no intention of proceeding with:

Salon’s Glenn Greenwald called the pick “Obama’s best yet, perhaps by far.” …Greenwald highlighted an article in Slate that Johnsen authored in 2008, in which she excoriated John Yoo’s infamous torture memo. ———-
Other Insurance Resources
There’s yet more help, and it’s free, thanks to the growing number of advocacy organizations, some dealing with cancer only (or even a specific cancer) and others devoted to health care coverage needs in general.
When you’ve got a thorny insurance issue, here are some places to turn:
The Patient Advocate Foundation (http://www.patientadvocate.org), established by breast cancer survivor Nancy Davenport-Ennis, fields telephone calls via its hotline (800-532-5274) and assigns a case manager who sticks with you until the coverage problem is solved, whether that means one telephone call or dozens.
The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (http://www.cancercare.org) provides similar assistance through its toll-free number (877-622-7937) and also helps callers locate legal resources to solve insurance problems when the need arises.
The American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org), in the Cancer Resource Center section of its Web site, provides basic information on paying for chemotherapy, tips for keeping track of your insurance information, and “A Primer On Insurance Coverage for Women with Breast Cancer.” Its information line (800-ACS-2345) is staffed by volunteers who will provide the same information by telephone.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (http://www.naic.org) provides links to specific state departments of insurance and other departments that regulate managed care. From these state offices, you can get information specific to your state. You can find out, for instance, if your state has external review boards for appeals.
http://www.cancerandcareers.org/women/paperwork/health_insurance/
There are often health services in your area that you don’t know about until you hear about it. My son got help I didn’t know existed until someone that worked there, told us.
Go to women’s organizations in the area, keep calling and asking for help if these numbers above don’t help.
Don’t ever give up, if you hear the dogs, keep going!
Hugs to you and your friend.

BTW Goofsmom: that is a perfect picket idea – the statement is so perfect!
“Rationing health care, AARP thinks I’m to old for Chemo!”

Her primary doctor and the Oncologist – a woman, btw – after consulting with two other doctors on the results of her biopsies and other tests, wants her to give the Chemo a shot.
She asked them and they all said it’s worth giving the Chemo a shot at reducing the tumors. That’s what she’s going on now – not just her own hopeful-wishful thinking.
It’s AARP that’s the problem now.

and Nikkismom, don’t fucking accuse my response as a kneejerk reaction. I’m damn tired of months, years now, even, of the tolerating dog whistlers, here and in real life. If I had an “ignore” option on this blog, I would use it. I’m sure as hell using it in my real life, finally, thank God.
———————————————————–
I would be more inclined to believe that it wasn’t a kneejerk reaction, if I hadn’t seen such reactions from you on this blog in the past. Including one directed at me (if you post long-assed paragraphs, people will think you’re a right-winger) – for which you later apologized.
The point is this: the charge of “racism” is a serious charge and should not be thrown about with such ease – or else it loses it’s impact and is cheapened. If you TRULY thought that SisterMoon was a racist, then why be POLITE? Shouldn’t there be consequences on this blog for posting racist comments? Wouldn’t you report that to Murphy and SM thrown off the blog, post haste?
If SisterMoon is NOT thrown off the blog immediately for posting racist comments / being a racist, then I can only assume that you’re not REALLY sure that she’s a racist. Therefore, why call her one?
I have no idea what is in SM’s heart or mind and I would venture to guess that you don’t either, especially on an internet blog.

That’s true about Medicare, AARP 80/20 – and my friend doesn’t know yet “why” or “what” specifically AARP won’t cover and what should be their part – what Medicare doesn’t cover. They just called her right before she was leaving for her first treatment and said that AARP had rejected her treatment.
(Note: My friend has heard from others this morning who also said that they had heard of several others having trouble getting AARP to cover things this past year.)
However, she did speak with the doctor’s office and told them that she was angry and was going to fight this. They told her to come in this morning.

An excerpt of The Daily Howler on the Sherrod story dissing the guests on Countdown:
O’Donnell “doesn’t quite get” why this bogus story gained purchase? Good God! As Paul Krugman notes … the press has been relentlessly fooled in this sort of way, going back through the Clinton years; indeed, American discourse has virtually been defined by the widespread acceptance of such bogus tales over the past several decades. What’s actually new in the Sherrod case? The remarkable fact that a bogus tale has now been widely rejected!
Of course, since O’Donnell played a major role in pimping such tales about Clinton, then Gore, the fraudulent fellow has a stake in pretending this history doesn’t exist… Like O’Donnell. Harris-Lacewell seems to be newly arrived from Neptune… Why did the story about Sherrod gain purchase? It must be because she’s a black woman, this big dope from Princeton now said.
What a ridiculous notion! Reagan toyed with his “welfare queen” back in the 1980s. From that point forward, Harris-Lacewell is able to name three examples (including Sherrod) of black women getting unaccountably trashed, one of them being Sister Souljah! … might we remind you of the remarks for which Souljah was criticized by Candidate Clinton…This is part of what Sister Souljah had said…:
SISTER SOULJAH (5/13/92): I mean, if black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?
…One month later, Clinton found himself sharing a forum with Souljah!… Do you understand how monumentally stupid Clinton would have been had he had failed to challenge these comments?
… We’re really dumbing the liberal world down when we present patent nonsense like this. Can’t we just say a prayer for those poor Princeton kids, but keep their professor off our liberal TV shows?

The Daily Howler has a piece in his archives…. I didn’t save the link… about the “balkanization” of our cable news outlets.
It’s disgusting. So we have Fox News slanting the story one way, and MSNBC slanting it another. They’ve created an audience out of mock outrage, and in the process pitted Americans in a never-ending war of hot air.
At this point, I think someone could start a news channel, broadcast it in black and white…no hairspray and botox, just newscasters in plain professional attire, no spittle, no witty banter, just reporting not only the news but contrasting it to this misinfo elsewhere, and report it all a DAY LATER, and still develop a passionate groundswell of followers, eager for real information.

Needless to say, after ready some comments here about my possibly being a racist, I am saddened and well, shocked.
I went back to even read what I posted. I think what needs to be maybe explained to me before any racist charges are made against me is, how is what I said racist?
I know what’s in my heart and mind. I know where I have stood and where I stand. I married outside my race to a Native American. I have three sons whole claim their Native American heritage. I have taught in worked 35 years in all minority schools and worked hard to just show kindness and love for those I worked with at all times. I have felt the pains of reverse discrimination, but those times just made
me want to to work harder and not give in to the cruetly and the pain they can cause. So I guess in the old song I have always loved, “before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.” I for one actions will always speak louder than words in everything.

Zee, what’s “NOMB”? My netspeak dictionary is incomplete.
I agree that you should be able to separate a message that someone is passing along from another source from the messenger and them not be called a racist, but in this case, SM made a personal statement that was quickly judged as ‘racist’ by DP.

Diversity and the Myth of White Privilege
Excerpt from the WSJ today – an article written by James Webb (D-VA)
Policy makers ignored such disparities within America’s white cultures when, in advancing minority diversity programs, they treated whites as a fungible monolith. Also lost on these policy makers were the differences in economic and educational attainment among nonwhite cultures. Thus nonwhite groups received special consideration in a wide variety of areas including business startups, academic admissions, job promotions and lucrative government contracts.
Where should we go from here? Beyond our continuing obligation to assist those African-Americans still in need, government-directed diversity programs should end.
Nondiscrimination laws should be applied equally among all citizens, including those who happen to be white. The need for inclusiveness in our society is undeniable and irreversible, both in our markets and in our communities. Our government should be in the business of enabling opportunity for all, not in picking winners. It can do so by ensuring that artificial distinctions such as race do not determine outcomes.
Memo to my fellow politicians: Drop the Procrustean policies and allow harmony to invade the public mindset. Fairness will happen, and bitterness will fade away.

Okay, I will weigh in with my .02 cents on the Shirley Sherrod matter:
What I find so interesting about the entire issue is what NO ONE is talking about in the point that Shirley Sherrod was attempting to highlight in her NAACP “speech”:
I interpreted her as using herself as an example – admonishing herself – and both blacks and whites to wake up to the real issue – the ‘misuse of racism as a means to divide us’ when we need to come together now, more than ever, on what is happening to the poor and middle-class America.
She re-engaged with the white farmer’s circumstances because she realized that ‘injustice is injustice’ and the ‘kind that is being affected’ is people – and the problem is people verses bureaucracy, accessibility and power.
Not her exact words – but what I heard as the point she was attempting to make, thus, her intent for using that particular story – which impressed me, given the audience was the NAACP with “AA progress” being the focus of their organization.
In other words – the poor, middle class America, Black, White, Latino, Asian or any other color, is now the under-represented – “the new black”.
That’s what I heard – the rest is a bunch of racial rhetoric that obscures the fact that she was saying that what has happened to average farmers is happening to all average America – and remaining ‘divided is only going to hurt us all.’
sistermoon3 07.23.10 at 12:16 pm

Zee 07.23.10 at 12:46 pm
Nikkismom, NOMB = none of my business…I have no idea if that is a common acronym or not! It just struck me it might be..!
And as for calling out Sistermoon’s statement…it may be something she buys, and it may be that she’s absolutely not a racist, but that is a rightwing MEME I’ve seen regurgitated in various places around the web, claiming that Shirley is racist for explaining the evolution of her beliefs from long ago, and claiming that “none of us” could get away with saying anything like that. It’s vicious, and it’s not even true. Moreover, it’s part of an entire “white victimhood” campaign that is second only to the antifeminist, whining “male victimhood” campaign you also see everywhere.
It would be one thing if Shirley had misused her office to misdirect someone. But she was describing an *attitude* of hers from LONG ago, where she felt if she did just enough to set a white farmer on a path where “one of his own” would take care of him she’d done enough. But the entire POINT of the story is that in reality she kept track of him and saw he needed more help and she GAVE him that help and in the process adjusted her attitude!
So the smug rightwing meme that “none of us” would “get away” with “saying that” is offensive to the max, in too many ways to enumerate. Either you get it or you don’t WANT to get it. If you don’t want to get it, it may be because of long experience feeling exasperated with affirmative action, or whatever ….but for absolutely sure, Shirley is no poster child for a “reverse racist” who “got away” with something.
Zee 07.23.10 at 12:53 pm

Nikkismom #167
Good recap of what Shirley Sherrod actually said in her speech to the NAACP, but the actual story is about the excerpt that was played from the speech that sounded reverse racist AND more importantly everyone’s reaction to it – Vilsack, WH, NAACP and our darling news media who all took the wxpected kneejeck overreactions to what they thought she was saying. It quickly came out what the entire speech was about when it was played. Then the finger pointing and accusations began about who the bad guys were. It was not about her entire speech although a few tried to save the propaganda value by claiming her other remarks were also racist. Not that many people are actually buying that. You had to be watching this story break in real time to understand the fuss.

Accusing someone of being a racist is a serious charge – or at least it should be taken more seriously that what it has been these days.
Want to charge SM of being a ‘right-winger’? – fine – that’s a bit different and less serious than calling her a racist.
Racism should not be tolerated. Period. Neither should bogus charges of racism against people.

A-yup!
I think the Sherrod story is getting so much hype by the media because they want to distract everyone from the really damning information contained in the Journolist emails.
Another “document drop” at dailycaller –
Journolisters offended by Keith Olbermann’s ‘misogynistic,’ ‘predictable,’ and ‘pompous’ show
excerpts:
The feelings against MSNBC host Keith Olbermann, then, must run deep.
“He’s become O’Reilly on the left– completely predictable, unfunny, and arrogant,” said Georgetown University Professor Michael Kazin in May 2009. “To my mind, what they do is no different form Hannity and O’Reilly,” said the New America Foundation’s Michael Cohen, “At least Hannity and O’Reilly engage with the other side (if mainly just to yell at them). Olbermann is just an echo chamber.”
—–
Julian Zelizer, a Princeton professor and CNN contributor, said Olbermann’s root problem is his misogyny. “I can’t take him anytime. I think to write off his mysogyny (sic) as limited to Musto is just not accurate. That very much defined much of how he talked about Clinton as well as others.”
Zelizer was referring to a series of instances during the primary campaign between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama when critics from both sides of the aisle criticized Olbermann for allegedly sexist treatment towards Hillary. Olbermann was forced to apologize.

many of the hours of the day to pass that i let it steal any joy in the day i thought, heck, this is soooooo small in comparison to people like Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin, I should be grateful this is bad as it gets.

I’m so sorry, I obviously didn’t look at the name closely. And I would not suggest that someine read a post without actually saying that. I just thought it sounded like the person who wrote that comment came into the story late and misunderstood the ramifications. Don’t ask. OK, fine, ask. I was at a poet’s site and he listed this as amongst his favorite sites. Since he’s gay, I thought it was perhaps a blog of musing on being male, or whatever. The site is called “Accidental Penis.” It’s pretty amusing, and addicting, and the idea is that people send in pictures of snails and kitchen implements and product designs, etc, that accidentally look like penises.
Here one of the pages. Scroll down. You will not be sorry. Warning: do not be drinking coffee.

Corexit 9500 & 9527 are petroleum based
The Corexit has been tested by the EPA in only 46 & 98 hour spans… Most reactions to this exposure is in the 10 day span after the initial testing… Riki Ott
Corexit has been banned in the U.K. for 10 yrs, it’s banned in Asia, and Brazil… Why can’t we get the information (data) on their reasoning for it being banned??
2 butoxyethanol can be traced in the blood, why are we not testing for it in the water column???
Things to test for in the water column would be for starters…2 butoxyethanol, arsenic, and cyanide.
[this is a local issue - Florida PUMAs may be interested]
Why has Dr. Nick Snyder not been supplied with the proper equipment needed to test the water column, for trace amounts of toxins other than the hydrocarbons ? The equipment only has a whooping $250 thousand price tag. Our state has been given 25 million for advertisement saying the coast is clear. Now that the coast is not so clear we should have this paid for with NO problem. Does the Grant he was given by Bp limit the toxicants he’s able to test and post results for ? [Florida got money to advertise the beaches were pristine, and now we are screwed, but no one is doing the right tests. The scientists are all bought out]

If anyone is interested in the history of the USDA and minorities that was behind the lawsuits like the one involving Shirley Sherrod, an agriculture reporter for the National Journal was on c-span’s Washington Journal this morning talking about it and taking calls. He mentions 3 suits against the USDA, one of which was settled and 2 others (for women and native americans) that have still not been settled. Callers talk about their own family experiences with their farms.

Dances.. you are not the only one completely fed up with some of the crap that gets dished out …and that includes calling someone anyone … a racist on this blog for daring to discuss a hot button issue or using a phrase you do not approve of , because you read some place it is a right wing meme . I thought we were free to express ourselves here but if you ARE GOING TO START CALLING PEOPLE RACISTS WITH IMPUNITY BECAUSE YOU ARE AT AND OF YOUR PATIENCE, this blog will certainly become an echo chamber for you .
DancesWithPumas 07.23.10 at 9:32 pm
I’m entitled to my opinions too.
Repeating one phrase, way out of context, and begrudging the assumption that no one else ( read: white) could get away with that, is not an invitation to rational discussion.
Last I heard, this blog was not formed to bolster the republican party nor rightwing memes. So why repeat them, especially since the one cited was debunked when viewed in context, in it’s entirety?
DancesWithPumas 07.23.10 at 9:40 pm
The echo chamber chant is bs. There’s enough diversity of thought and opinion on the left to add variety. The left isn’t monolithic. At least that way we’d be moving forward instead of yammering some major basic differences between R’s and pre-Obama Ds
But, whatever.
freddiebrown 07.23.10 at 10:12 pm
Dances – If I had any intention to fire her for her race, I wouldn’t have hired her in the first place, as I could see clearly that she is black when I hired her. My question in hind sight was, if I fired her because of incompetence and tardiness, would it be seen as racist. Not that I am worried or anything – it was just a random rhetorical question. Incidentally, I had no idea that this person I had hired had endured 19 years of physical abuse from her ex husband and obviously had baggage with her. She walked in at 9:15 am (1:15 hours late) and did not offer up an apology but was on the defensive when I asked her what this is all about. I don’t mince words and she got that she cannot play victim nor expect me to pander to her past. I don’t have a lot of experience with someone who has been through abuse and I really don’t want to deal with her shutting down mentally.

Since you think so highly of my opinion , and instead of having a civil conversation, you just decide you can go off on anyone here when ever you get “fed up “..but if anyone else does, they are just BS, you can keep your opinions , as your opinion are obviously the only ones that matter to you . You are already in an echo chamber of your own making .

Zee 07.24.10 at 12:36 am
“I see that you decide what gets to be called a meme”
Um, no, Swannie. Actually, even conservatives have been calling out that meme. Pretending that Shirley “got away with” saying or doing something racist is both untrue and highly offensive. Breitbart even tried to smear the farmer’s wife when she came out to support Shirley and said that Shirley never stopped helping them and credited her with saving their farm. He insinuated she was a “plant.” That’s the way it is with smear campaigns…keep flinging the mud and see what sticks.
“Shirley got away with racism” is mud-flinging.
This was a smear campaign from the beginning, and Shirley Sherrod is a lifelong civil rights activist, who is one hell of a woman to stand her ground and say, correctly, that she could teach Zerobama a thing or two.
Anyone who looks at the facts and still tries to maintain that Shirley “got away” with “reverse racism” is promoting an agenda…one that at the very least is counterproductive. White victimhood is not an approach that’s helpful to anyone. The meme in this case is all the more glaringly obvious because it’s so patently untrue that both sides have denounced it.
Shirley’s motive in telling that story was to combat ingrained racial bias.
The rightwingers who are still trying to infect Americans with diseased memes like “Shirley got away with racism you white people could never have dreamed of!” have the SAME motive to keep us polarized as the left has in screaming about the “racism of Fox News!!” Their motive is to stir up fear and outrage.
To point out that someone is repeating a meme planted by those with an agenda to polarize Americans is to attack the invasive agenda, not the person repeating it.
The horrifying thing about this story is that the FEAR of smear caused the WH to fire someone without even knowing the facts. This is the same WH we need to make reasoned, sound decisions during 3 am crises?? Scary.
The SAD thing about this story, as has been pointed out by a few people upthread, is that the lies about racism have buried Shirley’s point about the need to pull together to help all people struggling financially.
To continue to FLOG a dead issue by pretending Shirley was yet another black person getting away with reverse racism while we poor white people lose ground is promoting an agenda to stir up division and racial hatred. It’s not a new meme, and it’s easily recognizable, especially in this case.
Personally, I prefer to oppose Obama on grounds that he is an elitist, uncaring, corporate puppet who has no skills or experience in ANYTHING that can help him govern this country. Hell, the real AA civil rights activists, like Jesse Jackson and Shirley Sherrod, obviously don’t even consider him to have enough experience as a “black American” to relate to the majority of that community! If anyone’s getting a pass here, it’s Fraudbama, not Shirley.
Zee 07.24.10 at 12:46 am
Dragonfly, that is great you get to see Murphy! And I’m glad you and goofs at least got to see the silly, gross (but not explicit) image that I posted upthread.
And I have to disagree about the discussion here. To continue to smear a woman, a lifelong activist, who stood up to the White House, even after they lied that it wasn’t the White House who forced her off the road and harassed her to resign, who stood up for herself and spoke the truth about Obama’s utter inexperience, is an issue that is important to address.
Honestly, I have no clue why anyone is bent out of shape by the conversation. The issues are both clear and important.

freddiebrown, I kept thinking about this story today. I saw it from another source which mentioned that whoever saw that vehicle also saw the girl struggle NOT to be taken.
First of all, WHO saw? Not only did this girl do the right thing, which was to struggle at the snatching, because you do NOT want to be taken, but she was seen struggling. How is it that this info was fed to police? We’re not told, but if I saw this struggle, I would pursue. Weapon is one thing…citizen involvement is another.

I decided to wait, Goofsmom.
This feels like when my parents were “terminally” ill – the roller coaster ride through the medical profession can be hazardous to attitudes. You are really at their mercy of decision making – and once the insurance providers start weighing in with their “approval” perimeters, it’s anyone’s guess what’s actually behind the decisions being made. That, in itself, is the last thing you want to discuss, for obvious reasons.
It seems that each time, with each individual, I am forced to reorganize my thoughts and actions around the uncertainty of “hope.”
After just actively listening this morning, I think I’m finally getting better at letting a “terminally ill” loved one take the lead in how they need to emotionally deal with things.
I’ve fuched that up in the past and, in hindsight, I missed a lot of moments – especially those when being silent was the most kind, loving thing I could have done.
Goodnight.

I so agree… I entered this “discussion/ attack” because it seemed so unfair to me . I hate the word meme as well. just USING it seems to end all discourse and put some kind of notch in the belt of the ” meme caller ” .
What is truly offensive on this blog is the willingness of some to attack the regular members here with impunity , without regard to anything resembling civil discourse , consideration for feelings , or even the fact that the owner is is in mourning for her father . So let me just say it … that is one of the reasons for my decreased participation here , because I never know when one of these attacks will occur or who is the target. Disagreement is one thing, going off on someone here because you are ” fed up with the crap” is another. I am out of this “discussion “

OK, I had enough of enough over at The Oil Drum and I threw down the gauntlet with this post:
The use of dispersant is a real sore point with me. Maybe you could get away with it on a small scale, but it’s use in this situation is insane. 200 million gallons of gas/oil and 2 million gallons of dispersant. And the formulation of Corexit initially used was particularly nasty.
It was also apparent from some of the live feeds I saw prior to the Bonnie Intermission, that there was still some being released after the well was shut in. Or maybe that was just another “insignificant leak”.
The fact is that environmentally friendly bioremediation products are on the same EPA list that Corexit is on. http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/docs/oil/ncp/schedule.pdf . So it is a matter of choice what to use.
However, it is the industries mind set that chemicals are the solution and bioremediation products are “snake oil”. It seems like this industry has totally lost it’s ability to innovate. I guess China will take the lead as we become a third world nation: http://www.montrealgazette.com/technology/Boats+carry+eating+bacteria+de…

One more time. On Reality Check the video feed from Olympic Challenger UHD 31 shows a gushing plume of oil.
Watch the particles and fish get to close to the pipe – they are thrown out and away from the flow. You can double click on the video screen to enlarge full size and see exactly what the thrust of that flow is doing to particles and small fish!
Where and what is this pipe??? Why is oil is gushing out of it!?

I don’t understand. This has been going on for days! When they have turned the cameras on it it has been this way – a huge, continuous flow of oil, gushing so fast it’s hard to make out until you focus on the particle and small fish coming in contact with the flow.
Why has no one been talking about this – or is this pipe or source of flow the one they say is coming from another well?
And, if so, what difference does it make!? Who is responsible and why are no efforts being made to stop it!? It looks as large as the BP gusher – if it’s not the same or a part of their well damage.
What have I missed!? Where is this story?

I do not know what it is. It looks like it is coming from the sea bed. It does appear to be of the magnitude that would cause the observed pressure drop in the well.

“I have never heard a fox commentator say they worked hard to try to get McCain elected.”
You know why, sistermoon? Can you have forgotten? Republicans HATE McCain, call him “liberal.” No one has ever looked into why he suddenly took off in the primary field, but it’s a pretty good guess that the Republican planners knew they were going to lose this one no matter what and didn’t want to cobble any of the rest of the field with a loss, because they were already concentrating on 2012. The only reason McCain ended up losing was because Republicans sat on their hands and didn’t even vote in 2008.
But nice try at whitewashing Fox. The enemy of our enemies aren’t our friends.

Well Zee, I don’t think any media organization has clean hands , the left least of all , especially after the revelations of the journolist from Tucker Carlson Thank Goddess for Fox News, we would never get the other side of the picture if it were not for them! and I do love GRETA !The idea that the left wanted to shut them down as some news people said on the journolist is horrifically one sided and frightening .

Thank you!!! This is not a unique situation, nor is it abnormal….what we have here is a NEW MEIDUM. Look, if we were all sitting together, even if we disagreed, it would not seem so bad as online. It’s the nature of the medium.
And hey….we should NOT FEEL BAD if it takes a while to grasp this. I’ve seen two anti-bullying ads geared toward teens, who grew up immersed in this medium. They still struggle with it.
I can only hope Swannie and Sistermoon know that I’m talking about the topic at hand, not them, for instance. But if we met, dances and I could take ‘em. In hand to hand passing of the roasted potatoes.
Zee 07.24.10 at 2:39 pm
Nice try, Swannie, but if you say “I don’t see Fox doing this” you’re praising Fox. Giving the widest possible leeway, that is counterproductive and the last thing we want is to be tools of ANY of the MSM.
And beat that dead horse however long you all want, all the while claiming others are “hijacking” the thread: if the best you can do is smear the word “meme” and yell at dances, because you don’t have one shred of a talking point left to defend smearing Shirley Sherrod, then you’ve lost the argument and are the one who should know when to fold ‘em!
Zee 07.24.10 at 2:44 pm
btw, there is an article out now showing that Karl Rove’s “grassroots” talking points are funded by four billionaires.
If PUMAs are such shrinking violets that they faint when it’s pointed out that they are repeating Rove’s billionaire’s memes, instead of being thankful that we can recognize those fake grass roots and think for ourselves and COUNTER the billionaire rightwing tallking points, then we don’t have much of a movement to rebuild and/or replace our hijacked Dem party, do we?
Swannie 07.24.10 at 2:46 pm
I have been in this “medium” for quite some time… since 1998 actually . I have seen flame wars that would fry your eyebrows off. It isn’t difficult to grasp that when someone directly answers your post, or call you out by name , and accuses someone of something untoward, it is past the point of discussion . One of the reasons I do enjoy this blog, is because most people here do discuss , and do not engage in bullying, and groupthink is largely absent . When someone anyone insists that they and they alone are correct, are condescending in tone, or directly call someone out , it makes it difficult for everyone on that blog.
Zee 07.24.10 at 2:48 pm
Also, Swannie, I’ve been going up the thread backwards and if I crossed messages meant for you or sistermoon, I apologize…I do “know” you apart, but I have crossed wires with names, especially those beginning with the same letter.
===========
BCL!!! I’ve heard about the heatwave in California. (that’s where you are, right?) And I saw another blogger who said he couldn’t afford to keep his AC on. Am I to understand that your electric bills are so steep they can run into the hundreds per month?? Ouch…that sounds like our heating bills.
Swannie 07.24.10 at 2:50 pm
The journolists also said they would call Rove and friends racists .. so I am certainly not going to believe one article from a so called “journolist”. That would be silly after having the information we now possess about some of these left wing jounrolists.
Zee 07.24.10 at 2:53 pm
Like I said, Swannie. If you can’t defend the rightwing smear of Shirley being a reverse racist, give it up. Whining that the opinion is recognized as a widespread fake grassroots rightwing smear meant to rile up white “victimhood” isn’t going to cut it. Characterizing it as a “personal” attack isn’t going to cut it. Shirley Sherrod is far from being a racist, she’s not “getting away” with anything (and by the way, it’s THAT PRECISE WORDING that makes the MEME recognizable as the work of the fake grassroots billionaires) and she not only stood up the White House but to Obama himself.
Now if you want to continue to whine about a MEME being called oout, and falsely claim “personal attack” and CONTINUE to derail this thread, that’s all on you.
You never tire of nice tries…that’s a compliment!
Zee 07.24.10 at 2:58 pm
“The journolists also said they would call Rove and friends racists”
MORE nice tries~! So, it’s your contention that Shirley is a racist who got away with shit?
And you came up with that alllllllll by yourself, down to the same language I’ve seen alllllll over the web by the fake rightwing “grassroots?”
Or, are you STILL dodging the defense of the meme itself and into continuing the derailing you claim to be against?
Zee 07.24.10 at 3:00 pm
Enough bluffing, let’s see your cards. Are they a full house of race cards or not?

Thank you for answering. Remember when I posted about this sometime ago – more than a week ago, I think? I caught a glimpse of this around 2 AM when they were scanning an area.
When I saw it that night, after watching it for a while and realizing that it was a large flow, but didn’t look like the cap area, I went over to the BP site to see if I could get a better resolution. Less than a minute after I got there the feed went down.
Here’s my theory. This is what Simmons is referring to and they have finally determined how they are going to control public reaction.
“Seeps” is such a small word, visually, isn’t it? That oil is gushing at that location – wherever it is – and has been for, at least, the past week that I’ve observed.
Three months! No one will ever convince me that they have not known what lies underneath, having had three months to explore with Subs and other Naval Sonar involved. They have the most advanced undersea capacity in the world.
…which also helps to explain the gross overuse of Corexit, and why the Government-EPA-Obama Admin have all turned a blind eye to its use – leaving BP the culprit, wouldn’t it?
Swannie 07.24.10 at 3:11 pm
Zee, I do believe you have lost your direction here .. you have this whole argument from me in your head, and are putting words ( quite a few ) in my mouth. You are not even close to what I think about this situation . My take on this is not quite so “black and white” as yours. And your conclusions are not even logical … how do you possibly extrapolate that because I am now aware of left wing journolists calling right wing people racists without any basis in fact that I think Shirley is a racist ? That doesn’t even make sense…… and as I said, I detest the word meme, partly because it leads to the oversimplification of issues , as you have just done. if you had asked me what I think about Shirely as part of a civil discussion, I would answer you , but trying to bully me into answering … I don’t respond well to bullying..

HP,
#276 – I would let mine die too but the fines are ridiculous… $150 bucks and 1 month to get the grass green again or another fine of $150 bucks.
They want us to conserve water inside the home but waste it on the grass. Some cities have set the days when homeowners can water the grass and fine them if they water on a day not designated. So double whammy, if your grass dies or turns brown because watering it only twice a week won’t keep it alive, they fine you for the dead grass. Then they can fine you for watering the grass to try to keep it green, if you water it more frequently than twice a week.

Good post over at freemenow….

The word “ideologue” is bandied about by politicians and pundits to characterize others, but never themselves or those who agree with them. By definition, an ideologue is one who is a blindly partisan advocate of, or adherent to, a particular body of thought or plan of action and is intolerant of all conflicting views. In our Congress, ideology is pandemic, proof of which is the prevalence of strict party line votes and unswerving adherence to the talking points dictated by party leaders or group philosophies. This suggests the need for a reclassification of our House of Reprehensibles as the Lemmingslative Branch of the government. (By golly, TWO “n” words right there!)
Lemmings, as you probably know, are rat-like creatures who “go with the flow,” thoughtlessly following their leaders without regard for what is best for the general environment around them. It never occurs to them that there might be a better strategy, such as thinking for themselves and acting accordingly.
Our elected reprehensibles, alas, fit the same mold, dutifully marching behind the banners and spouting the mantras of their respective parties, regardless of what might be best for the people (i.e., us-all) they are sworn to serve.
——–snip
Changing one letter of one word, however, converts an ideologue into an idealogue – and what a difference that “a” makes!
Idealogues are people who not only think outside the box of bigotry, but refuse to be confined within it. They identify problems, tackle them head-on, theorize solutions and seek compromise with other free-thinkers with differing views. They see gridlock as an unnecessary barrier to progress, negotiation as a solemn obligation and compromise as the only weapon capable of cutting through the Gordian Knot of gridlock.

They have known from the first pressure test of the shut in well, that there was a significant leak. I would put it at about 20% of the free flow. What was not made clear was where it was leaking out. The little bitty stuff they show at the top of the well is not significant, so it was down-well somewhere leaking into the sea bed.
There are many layers in the sea bed and the flow can ever get caught and build up is certain layers until it builds up sufficiently to find it’s way through the path of least resistance. It may be that it took a while to show up or find. However, the existence of such a flow is not a surprise.
That recent evacuation was not because of that twinky tropical storm. It was because of the dangerous situation. Only essential personnel should be in the area and those guys better get on that relief well and plug that hell hole.
Armageddon no. But quite dangerous. The relief well is offset from the main blown well, so the people on that rig are better off than the DWH. However, it is better to not have ignition sources around.

In the late 90s, I did a project that included a formula I used on myself to help me identify my belief systems from absolute fact and/or my direct experience regarding differing races:
Unfortunately, there were two other steps involving questions and answers that preceded the final assessment of whether I was reacting to:
1) Facts – (Statistics or other absolute data supporting my belief)
2) Experience – (I have direct experience that supports my belief)
If not based on “Facts” or “Experience” then:
3) Perception – I have no facts or direct experience to support my position. It is, therefore, how I am perceiving the situation. It is only my interpretation of events, resulting in my strong opinion, based upon, and in support of, my belief system.
I guess, today, “meme” is the word for belief system – both are based upon having been “influenced” however, I think.

Thanks for the explanation. The silence on the obvious was driving me nuts. The 20% factor surprises me that it’s that much smaller, but like the rest of the “leak” it was hard to tell how big this other “seep” actually is from the video. It sure looks as large as the other.
They zoomed that camera right up to the flow, again, so it now just looks like blurry camera noise, again, to others, I’m sure. At least I couldn’t see a
dispersantCorexit tube at that location.Regardless, oil is still flowing and the cap that stopped the oil is just the cap that stopped the oil at that one location.
The relief well(s) solution were the only hope all along.

I did I do I will.
They call ‘em microwavable meals now.
I usually keep a couple of frozen things like that in my RV. Convenient.
murphy 07.24.10 at 9:49 pm
well, there are acually prtty good frozen meals from trader joes that are not too full of preservatives and other awful stuff,
but, cooking, as we know, is a feminist issue. My mother in law and my grandmothers, who are/were of roughly the same generation, spent HOURS and HOURS each day cooking good nutritious meals for their families.
Transitioning out of that lifestyle, which is what happened between 1975 and now, has created a crisis in the culture. Kids are fat and getting diabetes at alarming rates, but …
we dont want to send mothers back to the unpaid and unvalued kitchens.
what to do?
TexasTigress 07.24.10 at 9:51 pm

murphy 07.24.10 at 10:02 pm
nitrite-free bacon, I’m sure.
But now I know that so-called “all-natural” nitrite free hot dogs, which Skipper loves, are not actually nitrite free because they use celery to help cure them and keep them “all natural,” but celery has a naturally occuring nitrate in it that is just as bad, but passes the “all-natural” and “organic” test.
My aim is to be like the Epicureans who advised “Everything in moderation” — they were the original hedge fund managers.
DancesWithPumas 07.24.10 at 10:06 pm
There are commercial venues, like community kitchens, where staff cooks good nutritious meals. They send out menus in advance. You just go in and use the containers they provide abd fill them with whatever suits your fancy, in whatever quantities you want. I don’t know what the prices are like, but I think it’s a great idea.

Not knocking TV dinners, but just wondering if it is still popular as a normal every day go to meal for some. Understandable if you’re RVing.. When I RV, I cook a giant pot of chilli and freeze them into containers and get a whole chicken from Saffron in Hillcrest. Anything to avoid the box.
Good question Murphy. WOmen these days, don’t want to be tied to the kitchen but how can we / the kids stay healthy if we don’t cook? I suppose the crock pot is one answer or fast simple meals from Sunset magazine (under 30 minutes). Obesity is a big problem across the board but I think a large part of it is the individuals responsibility or lack of, to keep oneself healthy and this is not happening. I am not sure if there is an end to this problem – it seems obesity or just generally being overweight seems to be acceptable these days. Which is sad.

goofs, and other CA PUMAs…and HP, who is really scaring me…!
I don’t think I’ve ever had an electric bill that was even close to $200, whereas i’ve had oil bills several times that.
I did buy one more tiny window AC (that makes three, but the other two are so old they merely take the humidity out) and I’m a little nervous about the coming bills.
As for the grass, goofs…omfg. It sounds like California is one big Cambridge! They fine you for dead grass???? Why have grass in CA anyway???? I hate grass!! Have stone and container gardens.
Here are a few oddball ideas: rainbarrel for watering grass, run the house gutters into the grass (they have special ones for that), and if you even have a need for a dehumidifyer anywhere, well, at least here you can get a bucket of water a day out of those to water the lawn.
I don’t know about CA but our water bills here are the worst of all!!

Not so easy for us older empty-nesters.
I have a dog and still….if I get a roasted turkey breast from the store it takes all week and a lot of imagination to finish it. And I made broth from the bones for my dog last week plus have him a lot of the meat.
I used to doctor up microwave meals with fresh veggies but even then one gets tired of the limited selection. It’s hard to even find a jar of salsa or tomato sauce small enough for one person to use up before it goes bad.
Everything is super sized these days.
It’s kind of like an ordeal…ok, this week I have to plow through this bread, or this meat, or this fruit, cheese, whatever I buy. Because of available portions, variety is next to impossible, even with a freezer.

I’ll tell you what? If I have to wait any longer change is all I’ll have left in my retirement savings account. I’ve been freaked that 2/3 s of it is now gone gone gone…
Got a statement on Thursday… Now it’s 3/4s gone gone gone.
Yesterday I was looking around my rv and wondering if I could actually live in it full time. I could if I was forced to… But I would not be a happy camper (no pun).
Yesterday I talked with a young guy with a solar panel on this little camper he tows (a. Scamp). Smart guy. Electronics. 8 years in military. Came back not quite himself. Can’t find a job. Lives full-time in the Scamp with his cat and a plant. He’s worried about the future… His and ours. Says he’s seen a lit more people who have lost their jobs and homes boondocking in urban parking lots.

I have tons and tons of figs and my customer was desperate for some to can so she offered me tomatoes and cucumbers in exchange – and , due to my mishap with the baby goats , I am short on tomatoes .
You had told me about bartering or co-op farms or pointed me to a site about that before ..
Anyway , it was cool – except for the fact that now I have to make spicy garlic pickles all day and then the creeps will eat a whole jar a day until they are gone …

I like serving them their plates and watching them eat in silence until I ask if it “tastes ok?” to which they respond in unison without ever looking up ,” It sucks.”
ahh , it warms my heart .

John Seigel, Exec Producer of We Will Not Be Silenced on FOX this am. Disputing the BO campaign dude who apparently was on yesterday. Why the hell didn’t any press delve into this back when we were all screaming about the fraud going on? Every time I see something about it now it pisses me off all over again.
Anyway, just glad somebody is talking about it now, even if it is FOX news. We need to keep spreading this good word. But do have to wonder, what’s FOX’s motivation to dwell on this now?
And sorry if already discussed but what’s all this talk about Palin and “Mama Grizzlies” – Palin promoting women getting into politics? I must be too busy and out of the loop lately because this seems interesting news. Still would love to see HRC and Palin do coffee and discuss their views on women surviving the “women cruel” world of politics together. Wouldn’t I love to be a fly on that wall…

Thought about this verse this morning after reading about community members, travels, foods, family…
If I Had My Life Over – I’d Pick More Daisies
Nadine Stair
If I had my life to live over, I’d dare to make more mistakes next time. I’d relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I’m one of those people who lived sensibly and sanely, hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I’ve had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I’d have more of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day. I’ve been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.

Off topic, Gulf Oil Spill
Today the Gruesome Foursome has announced a New Oil Spill Containment System, featuring, guess what? Dispersants.
http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6775
One of the bloggers there noticed it and mentioned that the public may not like that. So I took the opportunity to put my two cents in:
The oil and gas industries insistent use of dispersants without consideration of alternative methods demonstrates the serious lack of innovation that is typical of a culture in decline. While the post here on the oil drum http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6724 shows that a culture of bacteria is more effective when dispersants are used, it totally fails to address the effect of various bacteria, and the effect of artificially increasing their concentration. Instead this post dismisses the subject with a single sentence:
Managed addition of particular oil-degrading organisms has often failed to improve biodegradation, either because factors other than the presence of particular organisms is important or because the organisms added are poorly adapted to the field environment and thus have poor survival.
OFTEN FAIL TO IMPROVE?
What does that mean? We need more development of technique?
Right now China is doing it. http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Global-News/2010/0723/Oil-eating-bacteria-to-the-China-oil-spill-rescue
So I guess we will get to find out if there would have been any benefit to our Gulf Coast Residents when China finds out.
The thing is that not all spills are created equal. We should have resources for skimming and means of adding bugs as well as dispersant addition capabilities and we should develop our technology to protect our environment and health.
Open your mind to possibilities.

Notice how much Obama and Bush are alike in this area too!
- Spend the first two years strengthening their hold through corprate policy favoritism and more government-administration control
- Weakening the power of the people
- Doing their damage
- Taking a lot of vacations – staying out of sight and off the record while big business and oil industry favortism, failed war policy, failed management of natural and man-made disasters further weaken our economy
- Test the next campaign strategies on a new version of “change is on the way and I need more time”

Anyway, does anyone know if one had already maxed out to her 2008 campaign can you still give them money to pay off the debt, or will they just have to send it back to you?
Thanks in advance.

Rancho 379, thanks for the link to Seigel on FOX. But having seen it the first go around I shall not be watching again. Nearly lost my voice screaming at the tv in response to the blatant lies the BO campaign dude was spewing.
John did do a decent job of disputing the falsities with the truth as we all know it and lived it at the time.
And Dances, I suspect you are correct regarding FOX’s intent in bringing this to light now. I hate even the thought of bedding with that enemy, but it is serving to get this thing out into the light of day for us. We must keep it going though because FOX is likely to lose interest at some point to move on to more “juicy” tidbits and anti-dem strategery (like grinding on the Rangell story), and all other so-called “news” agencies certainly are not going to pick it up that I’ve seen.
I can remember sending HRC a ‘thank you’ card after the elections and in my personal message urging her in whatever capacity and using what influence she still could within the party to steer them to do away with those f’ing awful and unfair caucuses that essentially defeated her. Thanks for providing the video of Seigel. OMG, OMG, OMG. Can you believe the Obama defense that if there had been fraud in the primary caucuses the dem party would have dealt with it. They did deal with it by sweeping it under the rug with the collusion of the media.
———–
What do they say about the DNC/RBC breaking their own rules in order to drag Oscumboy’s sorry ass over the finish line? Or punishing Floridians because the controlling republicans set their primary vote too early to meet the requirements? Or not allowing a full floor vote at the convention in denver until the uproar was deafening… and what about the pelosi shell game regarding delegates voting, or the super delegates being bought off by Oloser, alla that aside from caucus fraud.
PS you know there was a conscious or sub-conscious subtext of not letting the black make be emasculated by a woman.
I’m thinking obama’s entire life accomplishments were based on affirmative action and is part, if not parcel, of the reason all his records are sealed or otherwise not available to the public.

The White House backed the release of the Lockerbie Bomber
then Obama tried to lie about even knowing about it …
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/white-house-backed-release-of-lockerbie-bomber-abdel-baset-al-megrahi/story-e6frg6so-1225896741041
“Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison.
The intervention, which has angered US relatives of those who died in the attack, was made by Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, a week before Megrahi was freed in August last year on grounds that he had terminal cancer.
The document, acquired by a well-placed US source, threatens to undermine US President Barack Obama’s claim last week that all Americans were “surprised, disappointed and angry” to learn of Megrahi’s release.”
The US has tried to keep the letter secret, refusing to give permission to the Scottish authorities to publish it on the grounds it would prevent future “frank and open communications” with other governments.

Hayya HP, good memory girl.
Yes, I am enjoying FNLs for the second time around, I couldn’t wait for the show to finally come on the regular cable stations, so last year I hunted down all the illegal versions posted on the net. This time, at least I get to see them in better quality.
Oh ya, the ‘moral majority’ must be having a cow. I want Lyla to be with Tim Riggins again.

OH MY GOD!!
These people are beyond the beyond!
Check this out, a very shirt snippet from the Dally Dross…
“Personally, I don’t think the smartest move is to run on accomplishments. Frankly, there are many Democrats, not to mention Independents, that aren’t too thrilled with the legislation that has been passed in the past 2 years. I think we MUST run on Not Returning to the Bush Years.”
They STILL don’t realize their boy IS Bush!
The one and ONLY way the Dems will win the Presidency in 2012 is to run Hillary Clinton.
Seriously, if these fools weren’t so pathetic they would be laughable.

Going… Going… Gone
“The usually secret warfare by Barack Obama against Hillary Clinton has become open war and direct attacks against Hillary – straight from the Obama campaign apparatus. Yesterday the attacks from the Obama campaign against Hillary (shades of 2008!) became blatant, not disguised, attacks. ”
http://www.hillaryis44.org/
“The Obama thugs can play their masquerade on the Titanic all they want. We won’t fall for their games and cheap diversions. Hillary supporters will continue to investigate. Hillary supporters will continue to speak out. Hillary supporters will continue to prepare. Then we’ll make our move – when we are ready to do so.We’ll “keep going” until Obama is going… going… gone.”

Who would be dumb enough to call for an investigation of the release of the Lockerbie bomber when there is physical evidence that they okayed it? Never mind that was a rhetorical question.

“As our colleagues report, a six-year archive of classified military documents to be made public online Sunday by an organization called WikiLeaks offers a picture of the war in Afghanistan that is in many respect more grim than the official portrayal.
The New York Times, The Guardian newspaper in London and the German magazine Der Spiegel were given access to the records, which illustrate why, after the United Sates has spent almost $300 billion on the war in Afghanistan, the Taliban are stronger than at any time since 2001.”

In Disclosing Secret Documents, WikiLeaks Seeks ‘Transparency’
By ERIC SCHMITT
WikiLeaks.org, the online organization that posted tens of thousands of classified military field reports about the Afghan war on Sunday, says its goal in disclosing secret documents is to reveal “unethical behavior” by governments and corporations.
Since it was founded in December 2006, WikiLeaks has exposed internal memos about the dumping of toxic material off the African coast, the membership rolls of a racist British party, and the American military’s manual for operating its prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
“We believe that transparency in government activities leads to reduced corruption, better government and stronger democracies,” the organization’s Web site says. “All governments can benefit from increased scrutiny by the world community, as well as their own people. We believe this scrutiny requires information.”
The trove of war reports posted Sunday dwarfs the scope and volume of documents that the organization has made public in the past.
