Saturday Before the Storm

Good morning Pumas! I must apologize for my extended absence. I haven’t been doing anything as fabulous as Violet Socks since last Sunday. It’s been a week of earth moving, river redirecting mayhem at Chez Murphy. While it HAS been wonderful to be outside in the glorious warmth of almost-Spring, I’ve MISSED this place. Ack! Now, for the news:

Be sure to tune and listen live to Swannie on Goddess Radio, from now until 1pm. As always, beautiful music to accompany everything from housework to writing to blog surfing to cooking.

The best coverage of the health care fiasco vote is HERE.

Prplevette’s comment at the end of the downstairs thread is pretty devastating. She needs all the good Puma juju we have sent her way so that she kicks some serious sales ASS for the next 90 days. If you are in need of a new car, consider going to Indiana to get your next Ford. Maybe you can order online?

Also from downstairs, are these two comments that we should focus on from now until the health care vote tomorrow.

From Zee:

Stupak is back….NOW sent a call to action at 1 am:

Action needed: Call Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and President Obama

CALL NOW

Pelosi: 202-225-4965
Hoyer: 202-225-3130
White House: 202-456-1111

After taking action, please support our work!

Action Needed:

Credible rumors have it that the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate are cutting a deal with Rep. Bart Stupak to insert the Stupak-Pitts Amendment into the health care bill at the last minute.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

We must pull out all the stops to prevent this deal from becoming a reality. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Call and email Nancy Pelosi’s office. (Yes, do both — her number is 202-225-4965) Tell her the National Organization for Women’s chapters, leaders and activists will move heaven and earth to mount a primary challenge to each and every legislator who got elected claiming to be pro-choice and then turned around and voted for a health care bill under the cloud of a deal with Bart Stupak.

2. Call Steny Hoyer’s office and tell him the same thing — his number is 202-225-3130. But also tell Rep. Hoyer that we are appalled by his cavalier assurance to pro-choice legislators that the women’s groups won’t mind if the Stupak-Pitts amendment is enacted at the last minute. Tell him that, to the contrary, women’s groups mind so much that we will focus on mounting a primary challenge to his re-election in 2010, and failing that, until we get the job done.

3. Call President Barack Obama (either at 202-456-1111, the comments line, or the switchboard at 202-456-1414) and demand that he veto any health care bill passed under the cloud of a deal with Bart Stupak. Remind the president that hopeful, progressive women’s votes got him elected, and that we expect him to stand up for the women of this country — not to look the other way while Congress makes back room deals that could drive women to back alleys!

If the Stupak-Pitts Amendment becomes law, it will deal the worst blow to reproductive health rights in decades. Don’t let this happen. Show our leaders how critical this issue is to so many.

What Could Happen if Stupak-Pitts Becomes Law?

Low- and moderate-income women could be completely prevented from accessing abortion. Who has money to purchase a so-called additional “abortion rider”? Who would even plan to need an “abortion rider”?

Middle-income women could be severely restricted in accessing abortion — even if they are using some or all of their own money to pay for private insurance.

Private insurance companies that currently cover abortion could be discouraged from doing so entirely — because they will have to modify their plans to participate in proposed health exchanges.

We could face new exclusionary battles over birth control and other forms of reproductive health care coverage in the future. Remember, the supporters of Stupak-Pitts oppose contraception as well as abortion rights.

Find more information at http://www.now.org and check back frequently for updates. Thank you for taking action!

Opinion: 18 Myths About Health Care Reform Bill Revealed
http://www.aolnews.com/healthcare/article/opinion-eighteen-myths-about-the-health-reform-bill-debunked/19406480

Just one myth posted. . .you have to read the rest. Look at her documentation at the end of the article.

Myth 4: The bill will make health care affordable for middle class Americans.

Fact: The bill will impose a financial hardship on middle class Americans who will be forced to buy a product they can’t afford to use. A family of four making $66,370 will be forced to pay $5,243 per year for insurance. After taxes and basic necessities, this leaves them with $8,307 in discretionary income — out of which they would have to cover clothing, credit card and other debt, child care and education costs, in addition to up to $5,882 in annual out-of-pocket medical expenses for which families will be responsible.

Here, copy and paste this simple note into a text document. Print it and fax it to all the names above.

March 20, 2010

Dear Congressman,

Please stay strong and vote NO on this terrible health insurance reform bill. It is nothing more than another taxpayer giveaway to private industry — the WORST sort of looting of the public treasury for private gain.

I am a member of Puma PAC and I vote. We WILL remember in November!

Sincerely,
Your Name

Speaking of storms, here is a bellwether for you, and you can quote me on this. I keep tabs on all the Puma-ish and/or former Puma-ish blogs and one of them is Hillbuzz. The boys there have always been fabulous, hilarious writers, but there was a time not too long ago that their blog seemed to slow WAAY down. There werent many postings and most of them were desultory and downer. Even fewer comments. Now that the boys have extended a 20 foot long olive branch to moderate Republicans, their blog is SMOKING HOT! I’m talking 300-500 comments per post, and several posts a day.

Zillions of conservate dems and moderate repubs are commenting there. Which tells me one big thing:

The Democrats are going to experience an absolute MASSACRE in the November elections.

Now how freaking sly does that make those Hill Dog boys?

know what I mean?

Murphy,
thanks for the call out for sending positive juju my way, I sure do need it! And yes you can order online, or call me dirctly, I can have your car ready to go, and I will pick you up at the airport! For anyone out there in Pumaland interested, the action center has my cell phone number. Call me anytime! Let me know you are Puma, and I will get you the best possible freakin price there is. If you know someone on the Ford A-Plan you can use their number, it is for family and friends.
And yes Murphy, on the Hillbuzz issue, I do know what you mean. All I can say to that is boyz will be boyz.
I am calling and faxing on the HC fraud. I am a pissed off Puma today so all I can say is I pity the fool on the other end of the line ;)

Well Zee did it again – I have been a PUMA on this blog since June 5, 2008 – well kiss my ass – I guess I’m gonna have to go elsewhere –

I don’t have kids, never wanted kids, blah, blah, blah but I have always supported Planned Parenthood becuz my body is mine and nobody has the right to tell me what I can or cannot do – this fucking bill that Pelosi and her progressive bunch of assholes are trying to pass is going to allow MY taxpayer money to finally pay for abortions which has not been allowed by the Hyde amendment – I’m all for women being able to choose – I’m just not ready to pay for killing potential babies – get it??? kinda turns my stomach – but that is a woman’s choice and if so, pay for it – I’m paying for insurance

Zee, you seem to be a very smart person but I view you as another one of those elite liberal east & west coast progressive democrats who seem to think that those of us who live in flyover country are just too goddamm dumb to appreciate how fuckin’ smart you are and so way much smarter than the rest of us – well, I’m tired of it – you & others here have chased an awful lot of PUMAs away from this blog or else into hiding so they don’t write a word for fear of being slapped all over the place becuz their/my view might be different from yours which of course should take precedent becus you are so much smarter than us old bitter uneducated, illiterate women from the middle of the country (does that tell you something – middle?)- well go to hell Zee – I don’t need this shit anymore……………

Sorry Murphy – I may or may not continue to support YOUR blog but I’m 65 years old and I don’t need to be beat up – been there, had it done, & I divorced him………

Happy Cupcakes & just for the record I will never vote for another progressive Democrat for as long as I may live – who knows I could die tomorrow – but if there are Democrats who are the old pre-leftists Dems run – I will vote for them – those assholes in Congress right now are acting the same way they did during the primaries and the Convention – the progressives have taken over my party and I will do everything I can to make sure they are not reelected………………..

Good luck prplvette85 – if I had the money I would come down & buy a new car from you – I prefer dealing with a woman but can’t buy anything big right now…………….

Skipper looks like a little sweetheart – don’t let the b@stards get you down – hang in there………………..

Please forgive my ignorance but I am curious does traditional health insurance cover abortion? I have read here and elsewhere that people are infuriated by the coverage of viagra and so I asked a woman friend who teaches pharmacology law why people are turned down for so many life enhancing/saving scrips but viagra completely unessential is covered. She told me it is all done during the negotiations for coverage and she said you can thank your unions for that one as once group a gets it included group b looks and says us too.
Curious as to whether women in the work force(if I am not mistaken the largest part of the work force) flex the same muscles can they not demand the same coverage? Under this anathema, businesses and unions are still going to be in negotiotions with the different companies.

10

henry 03.20.10 at 11:27 am

Why age 26? What is that going to cost? I can understand perhaps if the child is continuing education but eight years after becoming an adult seems a bit much.

11

henry 03.20.10 at 11:36 am

I wonder what kind of effect bombarding the state and locally elected dimocrats might have? Little things like your silence during this travesty is going to cost you. The proposed bill effect a huge part of the economy and as such those within our states should be responding.

Washington may think it can ignore our voices. Not take our phone calls, but what if we hit up a house representative to the state legislature will the push overs in Washington not take a call from a state Senator expressing concern about their constituencies? Ask your local representative to speak to your congress person. Inundate them and we will not be ignored.

sistermoon3 03.20.10 at 11:51 am

Happy Spring everyone! Love the pic of Skipper:)

Maybe next, Michelle Obama will mandate all those obese kids cant eat at fast food. Maybe next they will mandate you have your tubes tied. whatever, it’s so ridiculous at this point i dont even know what to say.

so Milk is worth watching?
I haven’t been able to watch it as Penn turns my gut(Funny that before 2008 I had a bizarre appreciation for the Sarandon/Penn bloc) but as they threw themselves behind teh one just because he gives good face I can’t even consider paying a dime to watch the idiots.

I do have to say thank you though– I have a grand niece that had ill equipped parents and I was there. Never chose to be there it just happened. She is now 3 and a half and everyone who meets her is blown away by how communicative she is. I have been to more museums/zoos/concerts because of this little person than I’ve ever done on my own. I always sit with her and discuss everything. I just always wanted to let her know that whatever she felt was okay. Three and a half and her vocab includes annoying(me) rediculous, trying exhausting sad and so much more.
To cut a long story short my baby girl I have often wondered if I have done her a disservice as a gay man(residual childhood/adolescent/young adult self hate) I may have impaired her.

Reading your story is a balm to my soul.
Thankyou for sharing it.

Yes, We’re Dead Serious

By Jessica Kutch
“It appears SEIU is dead serious about this business about yanking support for House Dems who vote No on the health bill,” writes Greg Sargent at the Plum Line.

Yep, it’s true. SEIU members expect Congress to pass health care reform. If the U.S. House fails to muster the courage to pass health insurance reform, there will be consequences. Today, SEIU Local 200 announced that it is seeking challengers to Rep. Michael Arcuri’s Democratic seat after he indicated he would vote against the bill.

as I was heading south on hwy 15 in order to make my way to one of the local beaches, I noticed a very long string of runners down the hill and adjacent to the highway.
Then I remembered that hundreds of runners were going to meet here in Rancho Bernardo… To complete the run that Chelsea Kelly started before that prick abducted and murdered her.

I don’t know why I took the next exit … I didn’t want to take any pictures figuring they would make my camera cry.

Anyway, here I am, sitting on the sidestep of my mock turtle…
Thinking about these wonderful runners and Kelly.

Did I mention that all the trees lining the streets of this town have blue ribbons
tied around them?

I think I’ll just sit here for a while and be with my sadness.

I feel like I am screaming and no one is listening. Bambi is playing some kind of game with voters to get reps to vote. They say its just a radical fringe which is going ape shit. Hundreds of thousands of emails online this and that. No one is listening so why not hit our mayors stte elected officials and others. A call to your state congress person right now is ignored. A call to your mayor, state senator, congressperson demanding that they scream and scream out loud is in my humble opinion our last chance.

incredibly striking to get off the hwy to see this long stream of runners, walkers, women, men, girls, boys, in almost equal numbers, dogs, strollers… Then to open the blog and see the photo of the brilliant, talented, witty, insightful, athletic, beautiful and precious Skipper.

Good-bye Susie! I will miss you since I’m also moderate-conservative. Although a pro-choice person, I agree we shouldn’t force Americans to support abortion. Women should assert their independence from government and rely on each for help instead. Stupak had a thousand reasons not to vote for this other than this issue, so I’m glad he’s holding out.

Obamacare Hits Middle Class Hard, Pricing Them Out of Insurance
Friday, 19 Mar 2010 03:03 PM

By: Dan Weil

While President Barack Obama emphasizes that it’s the wealthy who will help finance his healthcare reform, the middle class would get socked pretty hard too, says Scott Gottlieb, a physician and resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Health reform will leave many of them newly priced out of a transformed market for health insurance, he says.

“The hardest hit won’t be those earning more than $250,000 a year — the group that he (Obama) says needs to ‘pay their fair share,’” Gottlieb says.

“Rather, it’s families whose combined annual income is around $100,000 who could be crushed under this plan,” he wrote in a recent New York Post opinion piece.

People at that income level make too much too qualify for subsidies under the Democrats’ reform plan, but probably too little to easily afford the expensive insurance that the plan requires them to buy, Gottlieb argues.

Many families who earn about $100,000 a year will have to purchase a policy costing an average of $14,700 for the mid-level, “silver” health plan, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimates, he writes.

“After income taxes, they’ll be spending almost a quarter of their net income for health insurance.”

And what will be the end result? “Many of these middle-class families will probably opt to pay the federal fine and go without health insurance until they get sick,” Gottlieb explains.

Families making more than $250,000 don’t escape pain either. They will face a 2.9 percent surcharge tax on unearned income and a 0.9 percentage-point increase in Medicare payroll taxes.

Who does benefit from Obama’s plan?

Drugmakers, device companies and health insurers all got some good news when Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives released changes to healthcare reform legislation on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

Hefty taxes on those three industries were delayed by at least a year, among other adjustments to the bill that seeks to overhaul the nation’s healthcare system.

Democrats working on executive order on abortion

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic lawmakers say party leaders are considering winning crucial support from abortion foes for health care overhaul legislation with an executive order by President Barack Obama.

The order – which does not require congressional approval – would be aimed at reflecting long-standing law barring federal aid for abortions except for cases of rape or incest or when the mother’s life is threatened. Exerpt, read more here:

Dances –

I don’t know how we protect them especially from the sick monsters. My adult daughter used to jog in her “safe” neighborhood and I finally convinced her that it was not safe to do that. She now does it at her fitness place and is off the streets. I went to one of those “find where the perverts live” sites and there were some in her town and one in my town. It is amazing how many there are. They are not rare. I sent the info to both of my daughters and my adult nieces so they would be more careful and try not to go places alone.

We have bike baths in my village and I often see girls riding alone and it gives me the shivers.

My cousin was raped and murdered several years ago. She was at a party and wandered off alone for some unknown reason. Ever since then I have been warning my children, but they need a lot of reminding. Being a mother never stops. And, every time there is another rape/murder of a child, I just can’t help thinking of Teak and what she suffered at the hands of the monster. Teak was going to do a summer internship with a Hollywood director and I can’t remember his name anymore. Obama’s antics are draining my brain cells.

It’s beginning already with the health care cutbacks. I am on Medicare with a supplement provided by my retirement system. The first thing they did in January was cut back on the reimbursement that they pay me to cover my Medicare monthly premium (being on Medicare cuts down on the retirement systems’s hc costs for me). Today I received a letter in the mail saying that my diabetic testing supplies that had been covered by Medicare will now be paid for by me up to my yearly deductible amount. Never before have they changed a healthcare provision in the middle of the year. The healthcare myth that they want to encourage prevention to keep down costs is yet another lie. A diabetic must test several times a day to keep their sugars until control. Testing strips are expensive.

Obama to Rally House as Health Bill Hangs in Balance (should be happening in a few minutes)

March 20 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama heads to the U.S. Capitol today to urge House Democrats to back legislation overhauling U.S. health care on the eve of a vote that party leaders are voicing confidence they can win.

Obama has had more than 60 conversations with lawmakers since March 15 to help House Speaker Nancy Pelosi round up the 216 votes she needs to pass the legislation tomorrow. At least seven Democrats who voted “no” on a House version of the bill in November have switched sides to back the measure. At least three others have switched to oppose it.

I see at the EVE site that they are having an event today a few miles from my house and I have been sicker than a dog for 3 days and can’t go. Fever, aches, stomach pain, etc. The last time there was an event in my town, I had a broken rib and couldn’t go then either. Rats.

Scarlet
so very sorry about your niece.

I would be a terrible parent… For several reasons but one in particular.
I’m sure I would handcuff my child to my wrist until she or he was 50 or there about.
Otherwise I’m sure I would die of stomach ulcers from the worry or have to take Thorazine 24-7. I worry enough about the children of my siblings and friends.

I have a 14 year old granddaughter who walks to and from school and then walks back again for after school sports. She also has a small paper route. Wven though she lives in a small community, it is surrounded by a large city. I know she feels safe in her small community, but I worry about her street smarts and whether she has developed any in her safe environment. Both parents work fulltime, so don’t get home until about 6 pm. It’s always been unsafe for girls, but now it is much worse.

Dragonfly 03.20.10 at 2:46 pm

I finally have wireless internet at home (but no land line – sacrifices must be made!), and I couldn’t resist getting online before I dash out the door to see my stepmom at her work.

Murphy, LOVE the pic of Skipper. I will have to order one of those for my little feminist who will be 8 on the 28th.

henry – I am sure your little niece is doing GREAT with you. I’m so glad she has such a good man as her guardian.

scarlet – your cousin’s story is so frightening. my cousin was raped under similar circumstances, but thank Goddess she lived. After watching Harry Potter, whose mother’s love charmed him against death, I tell myself that when I hug them goodbye, I am giving my dragonflies the same protection (along with all the warnings and other motherwit). It helps me not worry so much.

Dances – it’s heartbraking how many girls and women are raped and killed every day, every week, every year. We do what we can, every day. that’s all we can do my friend –

BigCatLover – I think it is criminal what they are doing to diabetics. Are you type 1 or type 2? I wish there were natural remedies. If I find one, I’ll let you know!

Susie – I haven’t caught up on the threads below so I don’t know what happened that left you feeling attacked. But don’t go away! Zee sometimes has an abrasive way of communicating her thoughts, even though she is a Pisces! Whatever she thinks of anyone, it really doesn’t matter. We all contribute ideas and links, and she does too, as do you. We shouldn’t run away when we get pissed off – just go offline for a while and come back later.

And I miss you, antifish!

and I believe the the health care reform is also just a corporate giveaway – if we had the public option, we’d have a fighting chance. As it is, the expletive deleted health insurance companies will continue to profit off of our misery, sickness, and death. They’ll get their nice bonuses while we lose our jobs, go on unpaid leave while ill, or try to go to work while being on chemo, assuming we still have coverage and haven’t been accused of “fraud” because of an innocent mistake, which leads to rescission and extra bonus money for the demon executives. Or we’ll just be unable to educate our kids so that they can be added to the peasant class to do all the work for the rising aristocracy.

Michael Moore, you rock! His movie Sicko says it all, esp. if you heard on NPR the Congressional hearing in which the execs ADMITTED to their murderous policies without any remorse whatsoever.

Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story is also brilliant. My brother watched it so that he could “find out what the enemy is doing”. Well, he may have changed his view a bit after realizing Moore has some good points. I loved how he put the crime scene tape around one of the companies and called out that he wanted to do a citizen’s arrest.

Prowl on Pumas!

Murphy – so glad you’re a mom and a blogger and … and … (sorry, not good with words).

Well it’s been over 50 years since I sat in civics class, but there are things I remember. Like 3 branches of government, separated, with checks and balances in place to keep the republic a republic. But now we have the executive branch telling the legislative branch how to vote. Said executive branch has also made an attempt to control the judicial branch.

The reason that everything Barack Obama touches becomes a mess is due to the fact that exceptions always have to be made in order for him to win. Democrats. When do the good times start?

**********************************
I saw some of that hearing by the heads of insurance campanies and I thought I was in the twilight zone. They flatly stated that they were going to increase premiums no matter what and defended their outrageous profits without batting an eye. It was eerie. If I can find the video on c-span, I’ll post it. Creepy. I kept wondering why they felt there would be no blowback from such frank testimony.

NEWS UPDATE: The House will not do a Deem and Pass vote on Senate bill on Sunday.

Dems to hold straight vote on health care

WASHINGTON — House Democratic leaders will have a straight up-or-down vote on President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

Democratic lawmakers and an aide to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., say they’ve dropped plans for an indirect vote that would have relied on a legislative maneuver to give their OK to the Senate’s version of health care legislation.

While both parties have used that kind of voting procedure on a range of issues in the past, it had drawn the wrath of Republicans and upset some Democrats. The House is expected to vote on the health bill Sunday.

Just screened a call from the DNC. President Obama’s hc wonderful blah blah blah blah blah (it was a long message) press one now to initiate a call to your representative (that would be Carney) to urge him to vote for Health Care reform. The whole gist repeated several times.

And yesterday they were complaining about too many phone calls.

Here is the video of the congressional hearing with Wellpoint Insurance Co and some of their customers. If you fast forward to near the end of the hearings, you will hear the Wellpoint President and CEO calmly explain that their company policies will not change. It’s her manner that is so eye opening. Absolutely without any remorse for their policies.

House Democrats seeking executive order on abortion funding
By Lori Montgomery, Paul Kane and Ben Pershing
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, March 20, 2010; 4:03 PM

House Democrats are working with the White House to craft an executive order that would clarify President Obama’s intention to maintain a long-standing ban on federal funding of abortion, congressional Democrats said.
snip
“The intent is obviously to express what we said all along: that we believe the language that has been included in both bills seeks to accomplish . . . that there will be no use of public funds for abortion,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said upon emerging from the meeting. Asked whether the document could win over a significant number of the holdouts, Hoyer said: “I’m hopeful.”

((((Dances – thanks for sharing and that you are there))))

((((Scarlet)))) Been there, too and it makes each and every story of it happening one more time so much worse, I think.

Here’s mine: My nephew and his step sister – 14 and 15 years old – were abducted and killed by a freaktoid monster. My nephew followed them on his bike after his step-sister went with the guy. He shot my nephew in the head and threw him off of a bridge and raped, killed and dismembered her beautiful body – as some kind of ritual. The guy’s mother had known that he was plotting something about ritualistically killing girls – he had kept some kind of diary about it. It was a horrible, horrible week as they searched for them and it only got worse when they found their bodies. The agony of my sister-in-law and the girl’s mother was incomprehensible at the time.

They executed him, without him ever reveling where he had put the “trophies” from her body. My sister-in-law and niece were in attendance – with not one of us having an ounce of pity nor regret for his demise – except that – “It was too easy for him”. It sort of felt insane, knowing that we all wanted him to suffer so much more than what he did to those two kids.

Today was my first day back at work. It took two hours of hyperventilation, sweaty palms, and feet clenched so tight it felt like I had golden lillies to get out of the house. All for naught because I didn’t have to speak to anyone. Phew! At lunchtime I walked my beach searching for seaglass. I wasn’t doing a reading I just was feeling out how my season would go. Gorgeous colors were jumping out at me, a good sign. Out of the blue I decided to ask the Seagoddess if the healthcare bill would pass. Immediately a NO. Of course I thought this is a load of crap because we all know it’s going to pass. About fifteen minutes later the question came to mind, will it pass tomorrow? Again No. We shall see if the Seagoddess knows all.

New York Times admits CBO numbers were fixed!
One thing that is indisputable about the Democrats’ big health care legislation is that the cost figures are going to come out right where Obama said he wanted them.

a “crucial goal in recent weeks, was to meet the requirements of budget reconciliation rules, which mandated specific savings over five years through changes in laws under the jurisdiction of different Congressional committees.

Think about it this way: Building the health care legislation was not some wild shopping spree in Macy’s, running through the store grabbing whatever looked nice off the racks and then heading to the cash register with credit card and a bunch of coupons in hand, only to let the cash register render its verdict.

Rather, it was more like a trip to the local fruit stand with a set amount of money in hand, and every item clearly marked with a price per pound. The precise mix of apples, oranges, pears and grapes could be adjusted — a little more of this, or a little less of that — so there would be just the right amount of ingredients to make a fruit salad, without blowing the budget.”

Here’s hoping that the corporate giveaway fails tomorrow. If they pass it, every sorry one of them must lose their bids for reelection.

From Rancho’s link posted by Murphy in her post – check this out, BCL:

Myth 2: Insurance companies hate this bill.

Fact: This bill is almost identical to the plan written by AHIP, the insurance company trade association, in 2009. The original Senate Finance Committee bill was authored by a former WellPoint vice president. Since Congress released the first of its health care bills on Oct. 30, health care stocks have risen 28.35 percent.

ONCE AGAIN, HR 676 SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE BILL, WHICH REQUIRED ALL HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES TO CONVERT TO NON-PROFIT TO OFFER INSURANCE.

The two were inseparable – so everyone assumes that he was either trying to tag along or felt uneasy about her leaving with the guy. Either way, he just got in the way of the plan to kill her. That part I know. The rest, about his mother, is kind of a blur. In fact, it may have been his grandmother that he was living with, but I’m not sure.

I didn’t go to the trial and it was several years before I even wanted to know all of the details. I couldn’t stand to even watch the news when it was going on. They were both such beautiful kids and what he did was unimaginable – especially to her.

My niece and I took a log trip together, 5 years ago, and talked about it all the way – like it was a story on 60 minutes – it was still so surreal.

I do remember her saying that he had a kind of satanic-worship thing going on and was considered really weird. But, most of what was known about him came out during the trial. I can’t remember if the ‘mother’ ever told someone before, or not. I do know that the diaries were introduced and read at the trial and used as proof that he had ‘premeditated’ killing her and that he hardly knew her. So, she must have turned them over to the police rather than hide them to protect him.

My sister-in-law and niece were at the trial everyday and, after they testified, they were allowed inside the courtroom. They heard the diary readings, as well as the details of their deaths – which was horrific. I do think I remember my niece saying that the ‘mother’ was devastated over what he had done and that she apologized to them at the trial – but I would have to ask her about that again to be sure.

What struck me as really strange – and memorable – was that my niece said that there has been many cases where these kinds of killers have actually ‘bragged’ about what they intended to do, but that no one believed them and reported them. Needless to say, it’s a little late to “report them” at the murder trial.

…And so, a couple of years ago I heard a macho idiot talking some macho, idiot garbage about ‘feeding his boss’ girlfriend to alligators.’ I went off on him that I was calling the police, flashing my cell phone in his face. I was serious and he knew it. He turned white as a sheet and pleaded that he was ‘only kidding’. I don’t take that kind of ‘kidding’ crap as ‘acceptable kidding’ crap anymore.

I used to just freak out and cry when something really scared me. Now, I freak out and call the police. I’ve finally figured out that being called ‘crazy’ is better than being treated as deaf, dumb and blind.

kat in your hat 03.21.10 at 7:38 am

Good morning, pumas. I’ve been reading up on this health care reform. I’m trying very hard to learn all the pros and cons – from all sides. I’m reading what the fiscal conservatives are saying, what O & Pelosi, etc are saying, what pumas are saying, what obots are saying, what non-puma feminists are saying, what doctors are saying, what mixed economists are saying, what republican leaders are saying, etc etc.

I’m so confused.

I want all Americans to be healthy & happy. I wonder if many or most of the uninsured are women and children, perhaps single moms? I like that kids would be covered by parents plan until 26 years old. I like a few other things about the bill too.

But the money would all go to private insurance billionaires? Isn’t that already happening? Or will it also hurt private insurance because of new rules? How is it getting paid for? Is it not true that it will be paid for via medicare cuts & taxes only on people making $200-250K? All people can keep the doctors/ insurance they already have, but then, are they left alone or do they have to pay more in taxes??

People who are uninsured will be forced to buy health insurance, and if they can’t afford it…they will get it free? What about middle class people who seem to make enough on dotted line but struggle in reality – will they get left out in limbo or suffer?

What about Stupak? Hasn’t that changed? What’s the latest language that will be in bill as far as family planning/ abortion/ maternity coverage?

Is it going to help economy in long run–for real? or is it going to destroy economy–for real?

Will it hurt our elders somehow?

I’m asking all these questions because I’ve read a different answer from each group. I don’t expect anyone here to answer me…it’s just that I’m not truly informed enough to have an educated opinion.

I cannot seem to find truly unbiased & straight factual information on this stinking thing. I want to know facts and I want to listen to the pros and cons from all people but everyone says something different. I feel like it’s difficult for me to simply learn about this thing because I know that I do not trust Obama & basically all politicians, and I can’t trust that everyone else isn’t slanted either. So, for example, if there’s a dem politician saying something, I’m thinking: is that TRUE? Or, are you LYING? Or, have YOU even read this bill?

*sigh*

Good Morning (((Puma’s)))
Kat, you ask some very real questions, that I don’t think even the they don’t have the answers to. It is very confusing. Is it on purpose, I think it is. The wording is such that there are more holes in the language than swiss cheese. I believe that at this point in time, with so much going on with our country, now it not the time. I think the only jobs that will be created are jobs for the IRS. I think it is a short term reduction in the deficit because we are going to be paying for this right away, and the benefits don’t kick in for 3-5 years, except for ones like the no preexisting condition clause and the fraud is going to use that money to bring down the deficit. I still think it is too much government control, our healthcare will be worse, and they will have the say in what treatments we can and cannot have.
Then there is the “what ifs” in our country. What if China calls us on our debt? What if there is another war in Iran or what if we have another melt down of the banking system?, Auto industry etc? I don’t know my head feels like its going to explode. I feel like raggedy ann, being pulled apart in a million different directions. Trying to psyche myself up for this job, trying to catch up on Pumapac, healthcare, trying to clean house and find clothes to wear, trying to find a free program where I can make flyers and such, since I discover I don’t have MS Office anymore… shit…
think I will just get a cup of coffee and have a cupcake for breakfast :)
and start over.

Regulators shut 7 banks in 5 states; 37 in 2010

Regulators shut banks in Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio and Utah; makes 37 this year

The closings follow the 140 that succumbed in 2009 to mounting loan defaults and the recession.

The failure of Advanta Bank is expected to cost the federal deposit insurance fund $635.6 million.

The bank failures — the 140 last year was the highest annual tally since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992 — have sapped billions of dollars out of the deposit insurance fund. It fell into the red last year, hitting a $20.9 billion deficit as of Dec. 31.

Depositors’ money — insured up to $250,000 per account — is not at risk, with the FDIC backed by the government. Apart from the fund, the FDIC has about $66 billion in cash and securities available in reserve to cover losses at failed banks.

Banks, meanwhile, have tightened their lending standards. U.S. bank lending last year posted its steepest drop since World War II, with the volume of loans falling $587.3 billion, or 7.5 percent, from 2008, the FDIC reported recently.

kat

you do ask some great questions – I suppose that at the root of my anger on this bill is the lack of regulation or protection concerning rate increases. If rate increase limitations are in the bill, I hope someone knows and can tell me. I am not as informed as you are. I got stuck at the anger stage and intuitively connect several dots to get to this point. For example, the WellPoint execs in their testimony complained about the rates having to go up because healthy people were no longer in the “pool” of insured people. The healthy people declining to purchase were a source of frustration and angst for these WellPoint people (to the extent they expressed emotion at all – Braley was like a stepford wife). So, here is a bill that mandates people buy insurance with penalties such as garnishing your income. That’s good for insurance companies. yet, there is no provision in the bill, according to the aol article, that subjects the health insurance companies to the antitrust provisions. We have no power against them – they can all gang up on us and force us to pay the prices they choose and we have no cause of action against them.

Also, I don’t like any cuts to Medicare, and that is one way it is funded (in addition to taxes on employers, which means my employer will likely be unable to afford to provide the benefit). Medicare and Social Security are entitlements. they must be funded appropriately. I sure as hell better get my social security – I’m only 40, so I get the “well, there won’t be any left when you reach 66″ there better be.

Don’t get me wrong, I am for health care reform – true reform for the patients and protections for the doctors and nurses so that the patient-care giver relationship can be restored. We are just not a civilized nation if we don’t take care of our people’s needs. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are empty words to most Americans right now.

We should require insurance providers to be non-profit to remove the drive by the companies to impress their stockholders. According to the aol report, health insurance companies’ stocks have increased in value since October 2009! That is just so so so wrong.

We had more millionaries last year than we did in 2008. Yet our unemployment rates increased. There is something so broken at fundamental levels here. We were promised, as Americans, certain rights and privileges, and we have a duty to help other nations achieve freedom as well. Instead, we are soon slaves to our debt to the Chinese and we are murdering Muslims and destroying their country so we can have more leverage on their resources, such as they are. Within our own country, we have a huge number of people who cannot afford insurance or who pay for insurance but it is cancelled when they get sick.

And the health insurance companies are getting a pay day if this passes while the people are getting burdened once more via taxation.

My dad told me twenty years ago to go into insurance, that’s where the money was. Boy was he right.

Kat, Dragonfly and my liberal sister pumas:

Trust your common (number) sense! Add more people, subtract the subsidies to providers, then add more/better services, then cap prices, then subsidize more people…voila! More taxes, mandates, fines, rationing, loss of choice, loss of privacy, and loss of rights. And look what happens to government programs-they grow out of control with corruption. I say, no!

if you are a senior citizen, you best get sick now! If they are stealing from Medicare, I dont know what it is.

LMAO

Let me get this straight……we’re trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn’t read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn’t read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that’s broke.

What could possibly go wrong?
