‘State of Catastrophe’ After Chile Quake
Japan and Chile both experienced earthquakes this week, the Northeast is enduring its second mega snowstorm in less than two weeks, and the Pacific coast is being deluged by rain, mudslides, and tsunami warnings.
Note: Via BillieJo: Hillary Clinton was scheduled to be in Chile before the earthquake, she’s expected to travel there on Tuesday.

Know you do women who rock things from time to time and wanted to share a little gem I discovered while helping my niece on a school project. Nancy Myers, the hollywood writer and director. She is ranked 58th as the highest grossing director but each and everyone of her films has been a financial success. Mahy have made more but most have lost a ton on a misguided venture– Nancy not a one.

This was on the claiment website when I went to apply for my weekly claim this morning:
UPDATE: Federal Extensions to expire on Sunday
February 26, 2010
The U.S Congress adjourned Friday without reauthorizing the four federal extensions of unemployment benefits and Extended Benefits. Each of those programs will expire this weekend. If you do not see a voucher on your claimant homepage beginning Sunday, you are likely exhausted. According to federal law, people can receive the benefits remaining on their current unemployment tier but they will not roll to the next tier of benefits. Hoosiers concerned about losing these benefits should consider a job with the U.S. Census. Thousands of Census jobs are available in Indiana paying up to $15 per hour. Hoosiers interested in applying for a census job should visit: http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/
As of Monday there are going to be over 1 million people with no money and no jobs. This is only the people who run out THIS week. It will increase weekly.
You think a revolt may be on the way in obot land? Crime will increase, and as we know so will Domestic Violence :(

Obama’s relationship with his supporters reminds me of a teenage love affair . Obama says whatever he needs to to get what he wants and love struck girl thinks he can do no wrong . Even after he has shown his true colors and character time and time again , she continues to justify his actions because the pain of admitting that she has been tricked out of her virginity is too much to bear. He has lied , he has cheated on you with lobbyists , big pahrma , and big banks , and you are still buying ” It wasn’t me , baby , you know I love you .” We just have to wait for the dopamine to wear off for them to see him for who he really is . There’s a reason ‘election’ rhymes with ‘erection’ ..

I think they are playing with you (or using you)…Heard on the radio that Bunnings was tying to point out that the government was broke and Durbin was trying to point out that the filibuster is bad for the country. Also heard that the unemployment extension benefits will continue when Congress comes back in session.

Durbin Asks Supporters To Help End Filibuster While Giving Up On Attempt To Break One

Talk about bad timing. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin launched a campaign today to end the filibuster and restore the ability for a simple majority of senators to pass legislation. His efforts include an email to supporters directing them to sign a petition at fedupwiththefilibuster.com to stop the abuse of rules that prevent majority rule. While I support the idea of ending the filibuster, I question why Durbin is just asking supporters to sign petitions instead of going to the floor right now with the help of Vice President Joe Biden to raise a Constitutional point of order against a potential filibuster of a Senate rules change, forcing an up or down vote on the matter, is beyond me? If he really wants to end the filibuster, and thinks it is wrong, he can take floor action to do just that.

What makes Durbin’s timing so terrible is that in the past two days, Republican Senator Jim Bunning (KY) launched a one man filibuster against a modest extension to unemployment insurance and COBRA coverage. After promising to stay up all night to “break” Bunning, Durbin relented and let the very tired Bunning go home to get a good night’s sleep. Unable or unwilling to “break” Bunning the next day, the Senate decided to adjourn for the weekend.

David Waldman has the more:
So they had him to the point where he was shouting obscentities [sic] on the Senate floor and decided… to let him go home for a good night’s sleep.

Awesome!

He probably slept a hell of a lot better than the Kentuckians who are out of work and depending on those benefits, I can tell you that. No word on whether Senate Democrats actually tucked him in.

It is a good thing that Dick Durbin realizes that the Senate is broken. It is even better that he is looking at possible solutions and rule changes that could potentially fix the Senate so it can function for the American people. But If Durbin can’t convince his caucus to spend one night fighting to break a simple one-man filibuster blocking a bill that helps Americans in need keep their COBRA health insurance, how can we expect him to actually fight the much harder battle for a Senate rule change?

The words are good, Senator Durbin, but you need actions to back them up if you want people to believe you are serious and worth trying to help. The American people, and the progressive base, are sick and tired of the meaningless posturing with zero intention to play hardball in order to deliver on those promises (cough. . . public option. . . cough).

http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2010/02/26/durbin-asks-supporters-to-help-end-filibuster-while-giving-up-on-attempt-to-break-one/

From a commenter:
I question why Durbin is just asking supporters to sign petitions instead of going to the floor right now with the help of Vice President Joe Biden to raise a Constitutional point of order against a potential filibuster of a Senate rules change, forcing an up or down vote on the matter.
Frankly, I think the reason is simple. The new approach to dealing with a controversial issue is to stir people up about it, start a website to get email addresses, ASK FOR CONTRIBUTIONS, and then do nothing to really deal with the controversial issue.
Anthony Weiner, Alan Grayson, Mike Bennet, and now Dick Durbin.
Progressives are being tricked into giving away important resources to self-proclaimed leaders who are ineffective or just plain charlatans. (end)

I got a letter from Durbin, my senator, yesterday asking me to sign his stop the filibuster petition and then asking for a contribution.

Bunning is also just trying to make the point-This is something we should actually pay for, so why not go ahead and pay for it.

I think everyone expects the benefits will be extended like the next day.

Hillary Clinton: Betrayed, in the End, by Senate Boys Club?

“it may be the Washington elected class that’s most resistant to a gender game change — meaning in the 2008 drama, Clinton’s own fellow senators. In “Game Change,” the U.S. Senate comes across as the highest glass ceiling of all. The boys club — or gentlemen’s club — that Clinton worked hard to join essentially turned on her early in the game and may have blackballed her chances. The same key members within the club befriended and encouraged Sen. Barack Obama, giving his candidacy a tremendous back-channel boost in the beginning.

“A simple truth lies in plain view, . . . let’s not assume it’s the national electorate that’s so unready for a female president. A fired-up Clinton was catching on pretty good toward the end, winning major primaries in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas. But the upper echelons of the political establishment, which she had reason to believe were on her side, had other ideas. “They” decided she was too divisive, even as she competed well in the field.

To a man, many of Clinton’s friends and allies in the Senate reached out to the talented but untested freshman senator from Illinois, urging Barack Obama to run for president.”

They aren’t playing just with me. They are playing with millions of people, who live in areas where there are no jobs, and the jobs that do come available over 1,000 people apply for the very same job.
I don’t see why they can’t use the unallocated stimulus money to pay for the extensions outright, this time, the money is there. then work on a jobs bill that will actually work. Fuck the hc bill that is going to put us in even more debt. I have been volunteering at the food bank. There are so many people needing food, people who never ever had to be on unemployment, or welfare ever before, people like me. People who want to work, not ask for handouts. It’s very heartbreaking to see. Congress and the dems needs to get their heads out of obama’s ass, because if they don’t it is going to get worse not better.

answer this,
what good will health care for all be if people in America are starving to death, like a third world country. America is going backwards. We are not longer a nation of by the people for the people. It is a nation of bow down to the leader, because if you don’t, you will no longer work.

Yes prplvette85!

Went to our CPA last week for our taxes. She said that 20% in the state of CA pay for 90% of the taxes. Anyone know if those figures reflect the national
figures?

With unemployment on the rise, it APPEARS to me that the only way we can continue on with the reckless spending proposals (health care, stimulus, etc.)
is to either BORROW more from countries like China, or increase taxes for the 20%, (and this number WILL decrease if unemployment continues at the rate that it does)

. . . .
And answer this . . .what happens when/if China etc. finally says no more?

Rancho,
I think that scenario may not be too far off in the future. I don’t know, but I for one, already watch very closely at the products I buy. I read labels very carefully, even those small little round tags on fruit and veggies. I do not buy anything not grown in the USA. I don’t go to walmart. People need to get back to buying American products. I try to support people who sell their homemade products. I grow a garden every year and try to can my own veggies, the ones I buy fresh, I make sure that they are by farmers near my area or if in the store, from the US. It’s just my small part in trying to help Americans.
I think that we will see more “communes” emerging. I think too that people should trade and barter between each other. I may have something in good condition and not use it, but someone else wants or needs. How about a Puma trading post lol. But I am dead serious. People need to take stock of what it was like in the depression, and learn to live below their means, because those means may disappear soon. Some of us are already experiencing that. me for instance ;)

Women’s History Month
Final post before I go. I just learned something! Women’s History’s roots began in California!! (co-ponsored by a male Republican and a female Democrat)

http://www.infoplease.com/spot/womensintro1.html
The public celebration of women’s history in this country began in 1978 as “Women’s History Week” in Sonoma County, California. The week including March 8, International Women’s Day, was selected. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women’s History Month.

McDermott out, Washington back in race for Senate seat
As one Lake County Democrat bowed out of seeking Evan Bayh’s U.S. Senate seat on Saturday, another jumped back in.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. will no longer seek the state Democratic Party’s nomination for the congressional seat after Bayh retires, said Keith Clock, chairman of the 5th District Central Committee, who spoke with McDermott on Saturday morning.
McDermott, also the chairman of the Lake County Democratic Party, could not be reached for comment as of press time.
However, Darren Washington could emerge as a candidate from the region.
“Northwest Indiana cannot afford to not fight for the opportunity to have representation in Washington, D.C., and represent the state of Indiana in the U.S. Senate,” Washington said.
The Central Committee cannot meet to vote on a candidate until after the May 4 primary and has until June 30 to chose a nominee.

Yes prplvette . . .remember lay-away, BEFORE credit cards! We SAVED, and then we put money down, a little at a time. Pay, THEN play!

Credit cards gave people permission to buy what they wanted before they could afford it. (And our government is recklessly enjoying the CREDIT CARDS that other governments have issued to them!) Remember the old saying, “He who dies with the most toys wins?” We HAVE to step back and reevaluate what REALLY matters! Your words really struck me. Your thoughts re. the depression have been my thoughts, too!

Mornin’ PUMAs –

Just caught up on thread

FWIW – a woman here in MN has a website – basically, what it is about is: pick 3 LOCAL stores, shops, restaurants, whatever as long as is a local small business and spend $50 a month amongst the 3 business you pick and you will save them from bankruptcy, etc. Seems to be working – I am starting this month to see what I can do –

I certainly feel bad for the people who are out of work and want unemployment benefits, etc. but the thing is – we have no money – the country is running on broke – our manufacturing base has been outsourced overseas where it is cheaper to produce – think about it – what do we make here to export? Government needs to be made smaller and everyone – and I mean everyone – has to pay some part of the tax revenues needed to keep us going – I’m retired and I pay taxes –
The tax code needs to be dumped and everybody has to pay a flat rate – no credits, no exemptions, none – that is the only way to make it fair for everyone – I’m tired of paying for welfare that just continues generation after generation…………….
that may sound harsh but just think about it for a minute – my big thing was always to have a job and support myself – not expect others to do it……when did that change to expecting entitlements????

O/T – sun is shining here and is almost above freezing – hope that means that spring is coming….sick of winter

Also, I may be going back to work – just part-time – not alot of hours or money – but it’s going to be helpful since my retirement fund was decimated when the market crashed………………….

I always believed the same. I worked two and three jobs raising my kids. Never asked for a dime from welfare, the state, or anyone. However, now that I am unemployed and a couple of years away from retirement, I don’t really call it an entitlement. I call it help until I can find another job. Believe me, getting 300.00 a week on unemployment is a far cry from what I made working. My heating bill alone two weeks unemployment. Not a way I want to continue to live on purpose.

prplvette,

#24 – Adding to your response.

Susie1945, I have worked all my life also. Never ever expected to be in the situation that I’m in now. I definitely do not have an entitlement mentality and have spent years adding to the national tax coffers by the thousands.

The economy is that F*cked up that those that want to work, can’t find work. They have spent all their lives contributing, never asking for a dime from the government or anyone else.

Now when some of us most desperately need the programs that we have paid into all of our lives, we run up against the bureaucratic machine and are denied and cut off. We don’t fit in exactly to their descriptions and must beg for what we already contributed. I don’t have an entitlement mentality, I paid my dues.

I can’t begin to describe and don’t want what position I’m in right now, but what you said is very wrong and hurtful for those pumas in need right now. I never thought I would have to go to the government and there is a great deal of shame and embarrassment involved, swallowing of pride and tears. BBL… I’m that upset.

Romaine Brooks
Romaine Brooks (May 1, 1874 – December 7, 1970), born Beatrice Romaine Goddard, was an American painter who specialized in portraiture and used a subdued palette dominated by the color gray. Brooks ignored contemporary artistic trends such as Cubism and Fauvism, drawing instead on the Symbolist and Aesthetic movements of the 19th century, especially the works of James McNeill Whistler. Her subjects ranged from anonymous models to titled aristocrats, but she is best known for her images of women in androgynous or masculine dress, including her self-portrait of 1923, which is her most widely reproduced work.[1]

Brooks had an unhappy childhood with an emotionally abusive mother and a mentally ill brother, which by her own account cast a shadow over her whole life. She spent several years in Italy and France as an impoverished art student, then inherited a fortune upon her mother’s death. Wealth gave her the freedom to choose her own subjects, and she often painted people close to her, such as the Italian writer and politician Gabriele D’Annunzio, the Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein, and her partner of more than 50 years, the writer Natalie Barney.

Although she lived until 1970, she painted very little after 1925. She made a series of line drawings during the early 1930s, using an “unpremeditated” technique resembling automatic drawing, then virtually abandoned art, completing only a single portrait after World War II.

Although her husband didn’t think much of the project, and forbade his wife from wasting water on the frivolous endeavor, Mrs. Tibbets faithfully watered the trees with used dishwater, and eventually the trees grew and flourished, and became the parents of all navel oranges produced in America to this day.
——————–

One of Eliza Tibbets’ navel orange trees died in 1921, but the other continues to survive to this day (now over 130 years old!), and is indeed considered to be the parent of potentially all existing navel oranges anywhere (the original stock in Brazil has since died off, although an offshoot of one of Tibbets’ trees was given to Brazil in 1955 as a gift). (Many of these strong, but unlinked, statements can be verified through the PDF file linked above.)

Besides her involvement in introducing navel oranges to the commercial world, Eliza Tibbets was apparently also a political campaigner (with her husband) for various social issues, including and especially women’s suffrage. Sadly, she died roughly 20 years before women were actually granted the right to vote across the United States.

I’m often impressed with how small things can sometimes prove to make such a big difference. Here, the use of some leftover water, dirty from washing dishes, was responsible for a huge portion of California commerce as a young state, and thus for much of what we take for granted on the West Coast today. Thanks, Mrs. Tibbets!

Dances,

That was because Casper and I had discussed Eliza Tibbets at one of the Puma meet up’s. Casper had told me about her, I had never heard about her before then. So it was disrespect I just wanted to post about her and was afraid Casper would beat me to it… ;)

I couldn’t believe CNN was interviewing home as an economic expert giving advice to the US.
Well, on a lighter note, Forbes (an actual American) believes the private sector can sell unemployment insurance so the taxpayers wouldn’t have to pony up everytime. Sounds like a viable business opportunity!

57

honora 02.28.10 at 6:02 pm

A clarification about #37, the men are playing a hockey game to determine who the men’s gold medal winner will be. The US women’s hockey team was in a game to decide the gold a few days ago against the Canadian women and no one seemed to make a big deal about it. I did’t even know about it until after the Canadian women won. The women play with just as much dedication and heart, I just wish their accomplishments were as appreciated as are the men’s. (I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, men get 11 months to celebrate their history and women get only one!!)

58

normapapuma 02.28.10 at 6:06 pm

I have been reminding everyone in Olympics conversations that the women’s hockey team won the gold, but I didn’t mention it here. Maybe somebody else did-I think Murphy. We love them!

SUSIE1945 #21…we need more people who think like you running this country and I am serious about that. Have you ever thought about running for office? The old saying still holds true, money does not grow on trees!

62

normapapuma 02.28.10 at 6:16 pm

Well, USA Men got the Silver-great game. It was the last of the Olympics before the close tonight.

I am finding out about a Mexican woman who I believe was the first person published via printing press in the Americas: Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. My son took a women’ studies course at college and was excited to tell me about her.

She was a feminist genius, dared critique a man’s sermon, pushed for women’s education and was a great writer. I am so excited to learn about her. At the end of her days, she signed herself as “La peor de todas,” or “The Worst of All of Them.” Can’t wait to learn more about her!

63

normapapuma 02.28.10 at 6:20 pm

Honora,
Well I guess I’ve been lying! I thought the US women won. I must have been thinking about the downhill skiing! Sheesh.

64

honora 02.28.10 at 6:21 pm

I’m working on a report on Margaret Brent, she is believed to be the first woman to demand the right to vote in ‘America’. It was in 1648 and the boys said no.

65

girlsrule 02.28.10 at 6:25 pm

Goofsmom #38…i read your post after I posted my comment and i want to apologize for being a bit insensitive to those hard working Americans in need right now. I guess my frustration is that this country is teetering on bankruptcy and continuing to print money to pay our bills is not the solution. Our politicians have done this to us and yes I believe if they would become better stewards of OUR money we could take better care of Americans in need without the risk of losing our freedom in the process. The sad reality is the corruption and greed is so entrenched in our political system that we are screwed either way. I hope I did not cause you any further tears and your post helped me stop and put myself in your shoes for a moment. Please accept my apology.

and girlsrule – thanks for putting yourself in someone else’s shoes

The sad situation is that many of those who expect entitlements without contributing are those who don’t give a fig about what anyone else thinks. Many of those who are really conscientious, contributing members of society and have fallen on hard times, who feel shame and are embarrassed by needing help are hurt the most. There but for the grace of God …

Susie1945 – love your idea of supporting local business. Many years ago I thought I would start a website “Made in the USA” but of course there were several sites out there already. The sad thing is, last time I looked, so many of the businesses had ceased to exist. :(

Replacing Michelle

I’m sure there is a very good “explanation” of why this happened, and it won’t have anything to do with corruption………….

At the top right hand corner of page 17 of the New York Post, January 24, 2009, was a column entitled, “Replacing Michelle” in the National Review, The Week.
Here it is, as it appeared, below:

“Some employees are simply irreplaceable. Take Michelle Obama: The University of Chicago Medical center hired her in 2002 to run ‘programs for community relations, neighborhood outreach, volunteer recruitment, staff diversity and minority contracting’.
In 2005 the hospital raised her salary from $120,000 to $317,000 – nearly twice what her husband made as a Senator.
Her husband, Barak Obama, had just become a US Senator. He requested a $1 million earmark for the UC Medical Center. Way to network, Michelle!

Now that Mrs. Obama has resigned, the hospital says her position will remain unfilled.

How can that be, if the work she did was vital enough to be worth $317,000 ? Let me add that Michelle’s position was a part time, 20 hour a week job.”

My thoughts: How did this bit of quid pro quo corruption escape the sharp reporters that dug through Sarah Palin’s garbage and kindergarten files?

I hope this is forwarded so many times that the media will HAVE to cover it.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite government program.

Recession is when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose your job.
Recovery is when Obama loses his job!

90

honora 03.01.10 at 12:31 pm

I would like to replace Michelle Obama with Bill Clinton.

91

FLBarbara 03.01.10 at 1:44 pm

Speaking of President H Clinton
When Clinton began her quest to become the Democrats’ nominee in 2008, she was the establishment, insider, elitist candidate. The presumptive nominee, if you will.

Obama was this annoying guy, bored after just one year with the constraints of the U.S. Senate and taking a long-shot at making history – the anti-establishment candidate.

He went to Iowa, went populist, earned the love of leftist activists at time-consuming caucuses who felt unrepresented by Washington élites, and won.

Hillary got her game back in New Hampshire with more skeptical independent-thinking voters but fell down in a string of caucus primaries. All of a sudden, Obama possessed the elite mantel, had the super-delegates (mostly Washington insiders and party élites) and the caucus voters (mostly proud intellectual, leftist activists).

In a stroke of pure political irony, Clinton switched gears and became the darling of populist Democrats: From February through June, she won nearly each successive primary and, eventually, the party’s popular vote.

When she made her exit on a stage in the National Building Museum in Washington, the emotion was so raw in the room (and in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana) that many pundits decided there was no way “her” Democrats would become “Obama” Democrats.

They did, sort of. With Hillary, they felt an emotional connection; with Obama, they felt connected to a movement, to history. This is probably why support from Democrats for his policies has waned.

FLBarbara-

——
These folks got many of the facts wrong. Obama won in caucus states because he bamboozeled the system…his people saw the loop holes and bussed in kids to fill them and intimidate older votes. We all know the story.

Most obots I know that voted for Hillary, didn’t believe their party would turn into a bunch of criminals and they voted for him because they were more afraid of McCain.

Hillary won, pure and simple and the DNC and Obama should be in jail for what they did to the system of Democracy and the delegates/superdelegates, let alone what they did to 18 million voters.

Payback is coming in November and in 2012. Karma!!!

Maybe he developed an ulcer, or had a heart attack, or got married, or divorced, or received a salaried job offer as a columnist, or received an apology, or reached a cerytain birthday, 0or was physically stalked or threatened, or received a memo from the Scret Service, or left because of obama’s patriot act renewal, or thought he could let go since citizens and man stream media are finally catching on that the emperor isn’t wearing any clothing?
Who knows? Cannon knows but he ain’t telling.

Shadowfax 95

thanks for the update. Do you (does anyone) have knowledge of how far the Patriot Act goes? Example: can the military run a criminal background check on you just because you are coming on base? Is that part of the Patriot Act? Personally, I have no problem with checks after what happened at Fort Hood, but the Patriot Act is scary. Not sure if the movie was a fair representation of what could happen, but did anyone see XIII? The homeland security guy was a scary scary character, and he was not the bad guy!

Re Cannonfire – so sorry to hear that. Good luck, Joseph Cannon! Your voice will be missed.
