Live Blogging the Transparent One

by murphy on February 25, 2010

in Brand Obama, Teleprompter Jesus, live blog

And I don’t mean “transparent” in a good way. I mean it more in the “we can see right through you and your phoniness” way.

(They are just going to lunch break as I post this. For those of you who watched the first hour, please fill us in? Thanks!)

Watch it live HERE.

Sorry OT

Urgent! WE NEED YOU to take action immediately!

Today, we at NOW-NYS learned that, in a few days, Senate Bill #3489 (the NYS Equal Rights Amendment) is coming up for a vote on the NYS Senate floor. The legislation “provides that no person shall, because of sex, be subjected to any discrimination in his or her civil rights by any other person or by any firm, corporation, or institution, or by the state or any agency or subdivision of the State.” In short, the bill bans gender-based civil rights discrimination.

For the past four years, I, as NOW-NYS President, have been lobbying for this measure. Now, there’s a very real chance to make it happen. But we need to get out the vote for this bill.
Once the bill passes the Senate, it will then go to the NYS Assembly, where it will be up to Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (D), to allow this legislation onto the floor.
However, this is not an ordinary bill but a Constitutional Amendment, whose passage in New York is a multi-step and multi-year process wherein: 1) the Legislature introduces a bill, 2) the Attorney General approves the bill, 3) the Senate and Assembly must pass the bill by a majority before the end of a two-year legislative session.
Then: 4) after the election, at the start of the next two-year legislative session, the Constitutional Amendment must age for three months before the Legislature can vote on it ONCE AGAIN. And: 5) assuming legislative passage, the Amendment must finally be approved by the voters.
So this is the very first step in getting our NYS Equal Rights Amendment. But an important step it is! And to get this very big ball rolling
WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Take Action now by contacting your Senator. Urge her or him to vote for Senate Bill #3489. It’s time for New York State to make sure women are protected by the New York State Constitution!
NOW-NYS President Marcia Pappas [Info@nownys.org]

McCain brings up back room deals, “The Transparent One” flips pages and gives John the skank eye, says, ” John we’re not campaigning anymore”. John replies, ” I’m reminded of that everyday”.

I can’t believe all the re-hashing going on…What a waste of time. And all theater for the cameras, which the one claims is not what he wanted. I really don’t get why he’s there anyway, he knows nothing.

BCL What you point out is exactly the problem: The fundamental difference in approach is a battle that will NOT be settled by The One. He dismisses it as a “Republican talking point”. People want the government to stop abuses in the health care industry but do not want a Federal government take over of anything. He’s trying to convince the public that it’s all the same thing, but it certainly is not! Is he as dumb as I think he is?

Murphy
What if I just say go to the previous thread starting at about the 11:30 am point to read live blogging on the morning session of the hc summit between the dems and the repubs. The summit is to resume at about 1:45 pm eastern on c-span3 and Fox News.

*******************************
It probably is because Obama is not there, he went back to the WH. The summit is at Blair House.

7

normapapuma 02.25.10 at 1:24 pm

Something ironic: My Republican husband thinks I’m too critical of The One. “He’s trying to figure it out.”
Really? He’s actually, in my opinion, trying to “figure” out a way to get the government to take over the health care industry. That would be a (another) disaster for this country, since we can’t afford that.

8

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 1:31 pm

Both c-span and Fox are saying that the media reported this morning that Obama has a Plan B that is a scaled down version of the hc bill. Reporters asked Obama about it on his way over to the summer. Obama played cute and said he always had plans.

they are getting ready to start again. Fox is having a live chat online 13,000 people online most are saying kill the bill!

13

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 2:00 pm

Obama is back in the room milling around in the crowd. The afternoon session should be starting shortly.

14

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 2:07 pm

Mike Enzi (R) speaking first and saying this kind of a session should have been held in the beginning. When they got the plan it was half finished with many amendments that affected only very small segments of the populations, like native Americans. His first point was that senior citizens are afraid of this bill cutting their benefits and Medicare and that should be addressed.

I hope the American people realize that Obama’s goal is to “socialize” our country. Healthcare is an important part of his plan for us. I experienced socialized medicine when my mom got sick with cancer and we signed up for hospice. Hospice told me she didn’t need to go to see her doctor. She really did need to see him because of sever water retention. He changed her meds and it really did help her. I could go on and on. Unfortunately, it was not a good experience for us. I don’t want any part of socialized medicine. If American’s think they are going to get quality healthcare with this plan they are being hoodwinked. I

And what is this new word “donut hole” ??

Lord, this drives me crazy. I should really get back to work.

46

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 3:10 pm

Xavier Becerra contradicts himself by saying reducing Medicare waste will be cut like ordering 4 x rays for chest paing, but that they will not cut patients benefits. Isn’t limiting the number of x rays cutting [atient’s benefits?

Shepherd Smith is railing against John Thune about both sides preaching their talking points and he says saying throw the bill out is no more productive than the other side saying just go along with us. He has Thune stuttering. Thune says the American people want the bill thrown out, Shep argues that the people don’t have any idea what’s in the bill. Interesting take on both sides. He will interview a dem on the hc summit after the break.

50

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 3:25 pm

Shepherd now bombarding Ben Cardin from Maryland about using reconciliation. Cardin is defending using it. Oh-oh.

51

PumaRhythm 02.25.10 at 3:26 pm

BCL…..I agree!

My husband has Medicare Advantage….if they take that away..I don’t know what we will do.
He has ten dollar copays and has great coverage….the injections he receives for his cancer are so expensive…his nurse laughed and said she breaks out in a sweat every time she opens the kit.

As far as I am concerned…his life depends on this coverage. I’m terrified they will take it away.

(((((HP))))))
(((((Pumas)))))

52

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 3:26 pm

A mad Cardin is claiming that the Ameridcan people want the dems to use reconciliation for the hc bill. Oh Nellie, he and Shepherd going at it.

53

normapapuma 02.25.10 at 3:29 pm

Oh, all the plans we’ll make! We’ll do this and that and forbid this and that and prevent and control and…control your money and your health and ruin it.

The donut hole is the gap between income eligibility of what is covered. If you make X amount you get $100, Y amount you have a huge deductible…This is the govt getting into the details of the insurance business.

Bo saying he’s not cutting, just taking from one place and putting it in another place…And the point of it is…?

54

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 3:29 pm

The dems are just not very good at this propaganda thing. Cardin fell right into Shepherd’s trap who said he’s glad it’s now out there about the dems using reconciliation.

Uh, for example-$100 not an actual number.

I liked the doctor (Sen. Cohen?) who said it’s like treating the symptoms without treating the disease. Some who support the public option say it’s treating the disease, and that is true. I just believe THAT medicine’s side effects are worse than the disease.

John McCain says they want to start over. He’s wants to talk about medical malpractice reform. This is where the repubs lose me. Saw a discussion on c-span this weekend where they said there were 13 states that have medical malpractice laws and it hasn’t saved any money on hc costs. I agree that it is a red herring, but I know others disagree.

Re: BCL #59

State-wise Internal Medicine malpractice premiums: 2009

Minnesota: $3,375
South Dakota: $3,697
Wisconsin: $3,946
Oregon: $5,497
Idaho: $5,276

States with Highest premium rates:

Florida: $57,859 !
Illinois: $41,000 !
Michigan: $38,000 !
Ohio: $34,017 !
New York: $33,360 !

These are probably still pretty low when compared to what it costs for General Surgeons and Ob-gyns –> they almost amount to an internist yearly salary in Florida ! Like $191,422 $201,808 in 2009 for general surgeons & Ob-Gyn docs respectively

Source: American Medical News. Malpractice rate data are reported every year by the Medical Liability Monitor

Approx. Internal Medicine rates for some more states in 2008:

Alaska: $10,000
South California: $17,000
North California: $8,000
Pennsylvania: $30,000
Washington DC: $24,000
Texas: $24,000

How about fixing the fraud and/or waste in Medicare and Medicaid before passing this huge bill in this terrible economy? The taxpayers who are having Medicare taxes withheld from their paychecks (who are fortunate enough to have jobs) would appreciate it if there is some money for benefits for them when they hit 65 years of age. If there is so much waste, then our government is not doing a good job at managing the Medicare plan in place. How can we have confidence in another program? They say the country is going bankrupt now. Reform what we have now, first. Then maybe Americans might have some confidence in our government and our representatives.

68

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 4:17 pm

wontbackdown 02.25.10 at 4:12 pm

The point is if those premiums were limited by reform laws would the insurance industry pass those savings onto the consumers. Insurance regulation could also achieve lower malpractice rates charged by the insurance companies, but reform of the malpractice laws saves the insurance company payout money but costs deserving patients the money they need to live after a medical screw up. So is torte reform the best way to lower these hc costs.

Hi PUMAs – been watching & blogging on Fox about this kabuki theatre program …………….what a bunch of bs – plugs needs to be plugged – the fraud needs to be dethroned – the talking points need to be stuck up each party’s collective ass & the whole frickin thing needs to be restarted – I worked for over 45 years and paid into ss & medicare & medicaid (whenever that shit started) now – I not only have to pay taxes on my ss but I also have to pay 115.00/month for my medicare plus another $97/month for additional coverage that medicare doesn’t voer – now you tell me – what the hell is that all about???

If the frickin’ government had left social security money alone instead of spending it and issuing IOUs – this whole mess would be a moot point – if people want me to pay for their health insurance, they’re living in the wrong country – that is not my responsibility nor my liability – I’m paying for my own

It’s not just the insurance premiums that are charged and the laws requiring the insurance (natch!). I think the FEAR of a malpractice lawsuit is also adding to healthcare costs as doctors routinely order excessive tests just to cover their arses when they know lawyers are looking over their shoulders. This was a point made at the sumpit today by a Sen. Dr.

78

BigCatLover 02.25.10 at 4:42 pm

Obama is making sure everybody has a chance to speak. He’s better at this than Pelosi or Reid would be. Now I’m waiting for the rush to the microphones when it is over. The dems will say that they allowed everybody to make their points and were transparent. The repubs will say the dems would not listen to them. End result – nada.

Yes, and the congress not working together to find a good plan that will cover those without health care, and causing the Insurance Companies and Drug Industry to have regulated profits, all that are not on the top of the food chain will keep being held hostage by either pre-existing conditions or health problems that occur with age.

BCL: “So is torte reform the best way to lower these hc costs.”

I don’t think so.

The biggest problems and obstacles with “Universal Health Care”:

1) Legislators in the pockets of HC/Insurance industry

2) Medicare/Medicaid Exploitation/Fraud – (create jobs by creating greater oversight/management)

3) Lack of oversight/management of Medicare/Medicaid services (medicare/medicaid often restricts services that could ultimately be better and far less costly – like preventative or innovative)

4) Insurance Company Profitability – lack of competition

5) Duplicity among physicians/providers of tests, etc.

6) Physician/Pharmaceutical/Hospital fees/profitability/charges not being capped

7) Illegal Immigration – limits on services provided

Alot of insurers will not allow doctors to order excessive tests anymore. My doctors tell me often that they are strictly limited in what they can do that the insurance companies will reimburse them for. When I get my EOB’s that is very apparent. I used to be able to have any test or treatment that my doctor ordered, but not any more. I think that is an old argument and not true anymore.

Illinois had medical tort reform, but IL Supreme Court zapped it…

BLOOMINGTON — Medical costs will increase and some young physicians may decide not to set up practice in Illinois, doctors said Thursday after the state Supreme Court struck down caps on damages awarded in medical malpractice cases.

“It’s a sad day for our patients in Illinois,” said Dr. Larry Nord, a Bloomington orthopedic surgeon who represents physicians in 14 Central Illinois counties to the Illinois State Medical Society.

Charlie Moore, director of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, said the ruling has “a potentially negative impact for businesses and their employees and for anyone who pays for health insurance.”

But the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and Illinois AFL-CIO praised the ruling.

“All citizens of this state should have the right to a trial by their peers to decide appropriate compensation,” said Michael Carrigan, president of Illinois AFL-CIO. In the ruling, the court is “protecting Illinois citizens from corporate greed and giving us all our due process under the law,” he said.

The Illinois General Assembly in 2005 approved limiting what victims could collect for noneconomic damages, such as pain and suffering, to $500,000 against doctors and $1 million against hospitals.

But the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that limiting damage amounts violates separation of powers because the legislature is infringing on judicial authority.

Ben Cardin is my senator and my complaint with him is that he is not pushing enough for the public option or medicare for all. He is a good, fair man and a senator that truly represents the liberal state of Maryland, if he were a woman he would be perfect.
It seems like most here no not want health care reform. I don’t like this bill because I think that it does not go far enough. It merely gives insurance companies captive enrollees that they can screw with impunity.
As far as the ‘poor’ doctors, I have yet to meet one. If the AMA stopped allowing murderous doctors to practice medicine, it would solve the malpractice problem. The same doctors keep causing problems and they are protected by the AMA. Don’t even get me started on the drug companies and their ability to get the US citizens to pay for the drug research costs for the world.

The whole world, except us, has national health insurance. The American people are idiots for allowing this travesty to continue. It destroys our industrial productivity, stops people from making intelligent decisions on employment, and it makes the poor second class citizens.

I am not able to chat right now, but I needed to get all my steam out after reading all these comments.

Obama campaign arm focuses on talk radio

The Democratic National Committee’s Organizing for America has quietly launched an initiative aimed at making Obama supporters’ voices heard on the largely conservative airwaves.”The fate of health reform has been a focus of debate in living rooms and offices, on TV and online — and on talk radio. And since millions of folks turn to talk radio as a trusted source of news and opinions, we need to make sure OFA supporters are calling in with a pro-reform message,” says the introduction to the online tool.

The online tool presents users with a radio show discussing political topics, to which supporters can listen live, and the phone number for that station, for when health care comes up. It also offers tips for callers and talking points on the issue.
My quick sampling produced Christian radio, a local talk station in Buffalo, and the syndicated talk shows of Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Sean Hannity — who will no doubt be thrilled with their new, liberal callers.

Supporters are then encouraged to report back on their encounters.

TechPresident’s Nancy Scola writes that the program is a product of a new push inside the organization to develop new software tools to give supporters “achievable, tangible tasks to do that fit into the nooks and crannies of their day to day lives.”

Preexisting Condition Exclusions

The law defines a preexisting condition as one for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received during the 6-month period prior to an individual’s enrollment date (which is the earlier of the first day of health coverage or the first day of any waiting period for coverage).

Group health plans and issuers may not exclude an individual’s preexisting medical condition from coverage for more than 12 months (18 months for late enrollees) after an individual’s enrollment date.

Under HIPAA, a new employer’s plan must give individuals credit for the length of time they had prior continuous health coverage, without a break in coverage of 63 days or more, thereby reducing or eliminating the 12-month exclusion period (18 months for late enrollees).

http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsroom/fshipaa.html

I don’t know if this pre-existing condition law applies only to certain employees or to all Americans.

So if you receive any treatment or checkup for a pre-existing condition for 6 months before enrolling in a new insurance plan, you can be excluded. But if you are not treated for it within a certain time period, it is not used against you?

111

scarlet 02.25.10 at 5:29 pm

Hey, wait a minute, according to this article it is already illegal to drop coverage when someone gets sick.

“As soon as I sign this bill,” President Obama promised in his prime-time address to Congress, “it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick.” Thunderous applause followed. It’s easy to understand why – no one wants to lose their insurance coverage when they need it most.

But here’s a news flash: It’s already illegal for insurance companies to drop patients once they become ill. It has been for over a decade. The American people should take note, as President Obama is using this non-existent crisis to justify massive federal intervention in America’s health sector.

Since 1997, federal regulations have prohibited insurance companies from raising a person’s rates if he develops an illness. And no matter how sick a customer gets, an insurer can’t drop him or refuse to renew his policy – provided he didn’t lie on his application or move out of the state where his policy was issued.

Perhaps the President thinks this law isn’t being enforced. He has repeatedly claimed that “no one holds these companies accountable for these practices.” But that’s not true. State insurance commissioners are charged with enforcing good-faith execution of insurance contracts. In fact, that’s exactly what Obama’s current Health Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, did for eight years as Kansas state insurance commissioner.

Occasionally, insurers identify customers whom they believe have lied about their health status on their applications and rescind their coverage. Rescission is an infrequently used but important tool for rooting out fraud. Health insurers rely on applicants submitting correct information so that their actuaries can estimate what risk they will add to the pool of people covered by the insurer.

Insurers must be confident that applicants are being truthful about their health. Otherwise, the health insurer will attract only applicants who wait until they become sick to buy health insurance, which could leave it bankrupt. The alternative to recission, investigating an applicant’s complete medical history, would be extremely time-consuming and expensive. It would also make insurance less affordable and less available. And despite the scare stories we’ve been hearing, rescissions rarely occur.

WellPoint, one of the country’s largest insurers, enrolled approximately 873,000 new customers in 2008. Less than 0.15% of those customers had their policies rescinded. Just 0.5% of those covered by Assurant, another health insurer, experienced rescission. The figure is similar for Blue Cross of California.

Could it be this?

Comparative Effectiveness = healthcare rationing

Hidden within the 1500-page stimulus bill (HR 1), there is a provision which allows the government to create a health information monopoly. The provision is not well defined in the form of a bill. Is that so bureaucrats, lobbyists and unelected officials can decide the “details”?

Will the “details” be:
Rationing medical treatments, doctor’s appointments, procedures, prescriptions, etc. by setting up a federal database to track America’s medical records?

Tracking treatments of every American to ensure that your medical procedures are “cost effective” to the government?

The Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research, whose scope and authority is not defined in the bill, could be given the authority to intervene and prohibit a patient from a service or procedure based on it is “cost effectiveness.”

Our tax money has already been allocated to computerize our medical records so the insurance companies or government (if that happens) can dictate if we are eligible for the treatment or medications our doctors want for us.

Recovery Act Allocates $1.1 Billion for Comparative Effectiveness Research (how to ration healthcare)

GOP Senator Jon Kyl offered a Bill to Prohibit Health-Care Rationing Based on Obama’s ‘Comparative Effectiveness Research’…it was defeated by the democrats.

The Preserving Access to Targeted, Individualized, and Effective New Treatments and Services (PATIENTS) Act of 2009 would have added a “necessary safeguard” to last year’s economic stimulus bill, which included $1.1 billion for comparative effectiveness research but did not specify that the research could not be used to ration health care.

Kyl outlined that neither insurance companies nor the federal government should interfere with the patient-doctor relationship.

“When the doctor says a patient needs ‘device A’ or ‘treatment B’ or ‘drug C,’ I don’t think anybody should get in between the patient and the doctor,” he said.

In October 2009, Obama said that healthcare reform would NOT lead to government interference in the doctor-patient relationship. Then, why he is continuing with the comparative effectiveness program? Why was it in the Stimulus Bill in the first place with a price tag of $1.1 billion?

The infamous death panel discussion was based partly on Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER). A major principle of the healthcare bill is funding more CER, as ARRA funding is slated to expire in 2011.

Shadowfax,

No. I’m talking about the people that may have had coverage (maybe from work) with the pre-existing being covered to having to buy their own policy and having a problem.

Putting them in a state run pool would spread the risk with “healthy” people, making costs lower. We need to come up with ways to weave the pre-existing with “healthy”. Small businesses also need to be able to pool together and spread the risk amongst more people.

this is only for employer provided insurance. It does not apply to individual purchased policies. The reason being, the more people that are enrolled, the lower the risk in the pool. I do know that in employer provided group policies they are charging higher premiums now for enrolling people over 50 and people who smoke, so as to lessen the cost of care for the insurance company.

That is how the insurance industry started. Lloyds, now LLoyds of London. They had many people in the pool and split the costs of care. Locked-N-Loaded 02.25.10 at 3:41 pm I just love US Rep Louise Slaughter (NY). She was my rep for many years before I moved to Georgia. She is an awesome, hard-working, roll-up-your-sleeves type of woman who has always fought for women, and teamed up with Hillary on numerous women’s issues. For those who missed it, here is the video of Louise Slaughter at the healthcare summit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee3uA_oSOfE

And Hillary would not have spoken to John in that manner.
Not sure any President has ever been that arrogant.

Obama said there was an in balance in opening statements because ” I am the President”

After listening to Bill yesterday, I feel the rage has calmed in me. How long will that last…I have no idea.

He wasn’t talking much about politics but his view of the world and what matters. It reminded me of why I am an old school Democrat. (Of course I am with Hillary.)

I have decided that I will never crawl in bed with a Republican again (McPalin) but I will vote out everyone that has worked to destroy my party.

I might vote for a female Repub gov, not sure yet, but I will never vote for any Repub in congress. I want my party back, and there are plenty of PUMAs that will vote to take the majority away from Nancy and Reid.

The Republican’s are not the saviors to me, no way, no how………and I will not go to into the Independent party, since it is a combination of voting for Dems and Repubs.

I wonder if I will feel this way in November, but that is how I feel today.

I wanted so badly to shake Bill’s hand and I want to hug Hillary so much. I am one of those people that will risk going to jail to touch, ever so gently, the art I love the most. I touched the David’s toe, almost got tossed out of Italy, I touched Van Gogh’s painting in Paris…and got chased down the hall, until I lost the guard. She was talking about if the nuclear option would be worth being used to the Republicans. She said if Obama did that, that some Republican’s would be glad that it would make the public angry and help the Republican’s gain votes in the 2010 election. But she said that it would be a double edged sword, and that the Health Care bill that was passed would be bad for the country.

I was commenting on the reasons the Repubs want the country to be angry, they want the Tea Party anger on the Repub side, to use those voters to advance the Republican agenda towards the Whitehouse. (The Tea Party people are not committed to the Republican party at this point.

I need to rant about Organizing for America this morning. I have been getting phone calls all week after 7 pm from various health named orgs. asking me to call my senator and tell him to vote for a bill or inviting me to a meeting. I hang up before I get the details. These are recorded calls so I can’t talk back. This morning they called at 8 am. I have a family member who is seriously ill in the hospital and of course I thought the call was about him. This is all about organizing to get the hc bill passed, I’m sure. I need to get off of their call list. Anyone know how I can do that. OFA is not calling directly, but I know they are behind these calls.

This is the kind of bullshit the California congress wastes it time on and why our state is on the edge of the cliff. We pay these idiots for this kind of crap? Assholes!!! (I am going to cuss against them until I vote them all out of office)

California Assembly passes resolution for Cuss Free Week

SACRAMENTO — Feeling a little salty, Californians? Better get it out of your system while you can.

Amid the ongoing — and occasionally tense — debate over how to clean up California’s budget mess, lawmakers are trying to tidy something else, almost as unmanageable: our language. Thursday morning, the Assembly approved a ceremonial resolution turning the first week of March into “Cuss Free Week.”

With the Senate expected to follow suit next week, all Californians will be asked to bite back on four-letter words and a few choice compound phrases. WT (bleep)?, you ask. Don’t sweat: Police officers won’t be waiting with soap. That’s not the point.

Hillary Clinton: Greenspan’s Outrageous Advice Caused Deficit
Thursday, 25 Feb 2010 03:31 PM

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday said “outrageous” advice from former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan helped create record U.S. budget deficits and put national security at risk.

Appearing before congressional panels to defend the State Department’s $52.8 billion budget request for 2011, Clinton said the massive U.S. foreign debt had sapped U.S. strength around the world.
snip
Clinton urged lawmakers to tackle the federal budget deficit, which reached a record $1.4 trillion for the fiscal year that ended last September.

“We have to address this deficit and the debt of the United States as a matter of national security not only as a matter of economics,” Clinton said. “I do not like to be in a position where the United States is a debtor nation to the extent that we are.”

Having to rely on foreign creditors hit “our ability to protect our security, to manage difficult problems and to show the leadership that we deserve.”

“The moment of reckoning cannot be put off forever,” she said. “I really honestly wish I could turn the clock back.”

http://moneynews.com/Headline/Hillary-Clinton-Greenspan-Deficit/2010/02/25/id/350960

I wish she could turn back the clock as well. To the beginning of the primary… That is, knowing what she knows now. I’m sure she would have done a lot of things differently.

Paterson has asked Cuomo who is the Attorney General to investigate him.
Smart move for Paterson to put Cuomo in the position to take down Paterson? Cuomo the man will investigate and then run for that seat himself? Will the evidence Cuomo “finds” then be deemed credible or viewed as Cuomo digging up the shit so he can run for Governor with no Dem challengers?
Will Cuomo’s “evidence” be believed?
Smart move for Paterson???
He could walk away with the last laugh.

Cousin # 232 — good stuff.

I say WTF — Barry just doesn’t get it. He just keeps adding to the problem.

I remember watching Warren Buffett speak – he said – Oh, we’re fine, we have plenty of real estate to sell.

What he was basically saying was we are selling our land / country to foreign countries to pay our debt. One day – we won’t own any of it. The ports / buildings / etc will be owned by China, Russia, Iran – etc. etc.

I thought — WHAT? How stupid is that !!

Did you know in Mexico Americans can’t buy land. They can lease the land but the gov’t can take it back at any time. Americans build houses and the gov’t can take it any time they want. Crazy !

All the foreign creditors have to do is stop lending us money and we would not be able to meet our obligations right now. We are running on credit…deficits, defiCITS, DEFICITS.
Hillary is warning us as gently as she can.

Pelosi has been misusing tax payers funds for years, taking her expensive plane to Hell and back…she also has Rangel in her pocket for his vote.
Pure and simple, pay to play.

NormaPA,

#244 – Yep, you are absolutely correct!… We are dealing with something similar here in CA. It’s neck and neck with Michigan who will default on their bonds first. Our credit rating in CA is being watched very carefully. We are in deep dodo here. So for me it’s really easy to see how it could happen on a national level.

Part of the problem is the way the global econ works and from what I’m reading next week is crucial for Greece and they are on the brink of having their credit rating dropped again. Of course Goldman is betting that the EU will drop to parity with the dollar, which they are being investigated for, you know more high risk trading on their part.

Ack, it gets very complex because it isn’t just a national issue, everybody effects everyone else and institutions we bailed out with tax dollars are betting on the downfall of the economy in the western nations. Great stuff huh

Honora

It was IMHO that Rudy would win.

I think that for a number of reasons
First being the political climate in NY is as the rest of the country VOTE them out.
Rudy is very popular in NY with Dems, Republicans and especially Independents.
The longer that Paterson and Cuomo drag each other down the worse it will be for Cuomo because NYers do like Paterson, most I’ve talked to.
NYers do not like anyone butting in to their elections.
And Nyers are smart enough to see a political take down.

IMHO all combined cripples Cuomo.

But it will be up to the voters in the end.

253

FLBarbara 02.26.10 at 2:30 pm

I will tell you something else about Paterson besides the fact he stuck to what was best for NY in a Senator.
On the night of the SD primary, which Hillary won.I was in NY with her.All the talking heads were demanding she concede that night.
She took to the stage and did NOT concede, so when I went to ask the VIPs to take the stage with her..well Gov Corizine hide behind a pole as did many others.
Gov Paterson went on stage and hugged her and said “GO get them my friend” that meant the world to Hillary and has remained in my mind.
So whatever Paterson has done in his personal life, fine.
I will remember what he did that night politically and personally.

I don’t know what Rangel has on Pelosi but this is fucking bullshit:

Duh, he’s black

What do you think Rangel, Jackson, Sharpton would do if she called for his chairmanship?

Play the race card. Because that’s all they know how to do.

Sandy Praeger, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance on Washington Journal this morning talks about selling insurance across state lines, and federal and state regulation of insurance companies. She also answers questions from callers:

The investigation is on-going… makes sense to wait for all of the findings before taking action:

snippet from the link:

“Obviously, there’s more to come,” Pelosi said. “We’ll see what happens.”

The committee’s focus on Rangel comes at a bad time for Pelosi and her majority party as lawmakers are trying to keep their focus on efforts to complete action on an overhaul of the nation’s health care and a series of bills to create jobs.

The California Democrat said a key factor in her decision to withhold judgment on Rangel’s chairmanship was the ethics committee’s finding that there was no evidence that Rangel knew that corporations helped finance the trips in violation of House gift rules, information that, the committee concluded, was known to members of his staff.

The Speaker’s comments came a day after the committee released a report admonishing Rangel while exonerating five other Congressional Black Caucus members in the bipartisan panel’s investigation into corporate-sponsored Caribbean trips in 2007 and 2008.

The committee found the New York Democrat violated House gift rules because his staff knew trips to Antigua and Barbuda and St. Maarten were organized by the Carib News Foundation, which had collected corporate money to pay for the trips to business seminars.

Even though the committee acknowledged that Rangel himself didn’t know of the corporate money, it said he was responsible for the failure of his aides.

Hey, Hillbuzz has an interesting take on the Patterson announcement:

We would love to see Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton become New York’s first female Governor.

Presidents Van Buren, Cleveland, and both Roosevelts served as Governor of New York before becoming President.

272

honora 02.26.10 at 8:10 pm

If the Dems are ready to lose control of the House after the 2010 election, Rangel may want to take his punishment now. One the Republicans gain control of the investigation it will be another three ring circus. (I don’t mean to suggest that Rangel is not a thief and an cheat, I think he is. The Dems will give him a slap on the wrist and his constituents will continue to re-elect him.)
