in Cupcakes!, Women Who Smoke, open thread

The city of Portland, Maine is neat; lots of restaurants and funky shops. It feels more like a college town than a gritty, Maine fishing port. Thus ends my Puma PAC Travelogue. Post Super Bowl cupcakes are on the coffee table. Yay!

Although she’s holds the fiscal/social views that are opposite mine, I’m thrilled that Costa Rica has elected their first WOMAN President, Laura Chinchilla (the term “female” is for animals, like chinchillas, not for humans). Sheesh. Here’s a pic of the adorable new prez!

Oops! That’s not her. Here she is, today’s Woman Who Smokes!:

Thank you for all the well wishes. Sis is stable and recovering but will be out of it and in pain for a while, but a full recovery is expected. Hopefully my family hasn’t changed the locks to keep me out when I get back home tonight. This is, as you might have guessed, an open thread.

The grammar in the second paragraph of my post is atrocious. Please pardon my dim-wittedness.

that is all.

murphy, I’m so glad your sis will make a full recovery. I liked your post! Didn’t notice any atrocious grammar because I am operating on 2.5 hours of sleep. My mama was a grammar teacher, so I should have noticed, but oh well . . . safe travels!

hi sheila7!

Chinchillas are so cute (the furry animal kind). Put them in a pan of dust and they roll all around and shake the dust off. Congratulations to the Costa Rican kind. Is every country in the world going to have a woman prez before we do.

Please send a message Sen Monserrate must talk a long walk off a short pier.

National Organization for Women-New York State Demands: Expel Monserrate
Politicans Must Stop Playing Games with Women’s Safety

ALBANY, NY (02/07/2010) For a couple of weeks now, rumors have been circulating about the New York State Senate’s upcoming decision to either expel or censure NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate (D), who was recently convicted of misdemeanor assault for slashing his woman friend. Although NYS Senate Conference Leader John L. Sampson (D) has promised a Tuesday, February 9 resolution, he will not say what decision will be resolved.

According to NOW-NYS President Marcia Pappas, “the future of the Democratic Party and women’s safety is in Sampson’s hands.” In view of the fact that Democrats will lose an important Senate seat if they expel Monserrate, Pappas explained: “Democrats can either do what it politically expedient or they can do what is ethically right, by showing the women (and of course all citizens) of New York State that their safety comes first. We hope they will choose the latter.”

In that most rumors predict a decision for censure rather than expulsion, Pappas asks: “Will Senator Sampson give advance warning so that citizens can protest ahead of time? Or will he just spring it on everyone in the form of a ‘privileged resolution’ that needs no committee vote or forty-eight-hour warning?”

Some Republicans are calling for expulsion in their own “privileged resolution.” But such a measure could be voted down and/or the Democratic leadership could easily prevent a floor vote by burying the Republican resolution in a Finance Committee referral.

Pappas concludes that “NOW-NYS believes EXPULSION IS THE ONLY ANSWER.” She adds that “NOW will be holding accountable all Senators who don’t support a vote for expulsion.”

You know what to say. The message is simple “EXPEL MONSERRATE NOW!”

In Sisterhood and for Equality,
Marcia A.Pappas
President, NOW-NYS

NY Senator Gillibrand said: “Domestic violence has no place in our society, and certainly has no place in the State Legislature. A court of law has found Sen. Monserrate guilty of domestic violence, and I believe he should resign immediately. If he does not resign, then the Senate should move to expel him. We must take a hard line against violence toward women in our society.”

fe⋅male  /ˈfimeɪl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [fee-meyl] Show IPA
–noun 1. a person bearing two X chromosomes in the cell nuclei and normally having a vagina, a uterus and ovaries, and developing at puberty a relatively rounded body and enlarged breasts, and retaining a beardless face; a girl or woman.
2. an organism of the sex or sexual phase that normally produces egg cells.
3. Botany. a pistillate plant.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/female

I’m off the check my webster’s dictionary to see if they agree. I’ve never heard that a female only applies to an animal or plant before except here, so need to check this out.

9

DancesWithPumas 02.08.10 at 1:25 pm

a relatively rounded body and enlarged breasts, and retaining a beardless face
——————-
why is this decription relative to the male body as the basis of comparison?

BCL
I do not believe that is true… I do know that I tend to wince when a woman is described as “female”… it just sounds too clinical…

10

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:26 pm

Here’s Websters’ Online definition:
Main Entry: 1fe·male
Pronunciation: \ˈfē-ˌmāl\
Function: adjective
Date: 14th century
1 a (1) : of, relating to, or being the sex that bears young or produces eggs (2) : pistillate b (1) : composed of members of the female sex (2) : characteristic of girls or women
2 : having some quality (as gentleness) associated with the female sex
3 : designed with a hollow or groove into which a corresponding male part fits

— fe·male·ness noun
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/female

My 20 year old hard copy of Webster’s is upstairs so will check out the traditional definition later. Just trying to figure out how much of a faux pas I’ve been making in the past when I used to term to refer to a woman. I can understand that since it is a form of the word male, it can offend some women. Most of my education is in the science fields so we used the term often.

11

DancesWithPumas 02.08.10 at 1:28 pm

BCL
I’d like to see the defs for males from those two sources… as a basis of comparison.

12

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:29 pm

Well webster has never seen women on the blogs:

2 : having some quality (as gentleness) associated with the female sex

13

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:32 pm

DWP
I’ll check:

Main Entry: 1male
Pronunciation: \ˈmāl\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French masle, male, adjective & noun, from Latin masculus — more at masculine
Date: 14th century
1 a : a male person : a man or a boy b : an individual that produces small usually motile gametes (as spermatozoa or spermatozoids) which fertilize the eggs of a female
2 : a staminate plant
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/male

14

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:38 pm

2nd source definition:
male  /meɪl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [meyl] Show IPA
–noun 1. a person bearing an X and Y chromosome pair in the cell nuclei and normally having a penis, scrotum, and testicles, and developing hair on the face at adolescence; a boy or man.
2. an organism of the sex or sexual phase that normally produces a sperm cell or male gamete.
3. Botany. a staminate plant.

15

DancesWithPumas 02.08.10 at 1:38 pm

2 : having some quality (as gentleness) associated with the female sex
——————–
if one is not gentle, does that mean they are not female?

16

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:42 pm

DWP
I think being able to bear children trumps gentleness. LOL

FLBarbara 02.08.10 at 1:43 pm

Thanks Dragonfly for bringing that up here.

I am absolutely astounded that we have to Demand the slasher be removed from office.
Can you imagine if a woman Senator broke a glass in her boyfriends face, then was filmed pulling her down the hallway of apartment by the hair, bloody and screaming, then drove 40 minutes to a hospital out of her district?
My God, if it was a woman who committed this crime of violence we would not be begging to have her removed from office.
He was found guilty in a court even though girlfriend refused to testify.

Women once again under the political bus.

The fact that women have to beg to remove a violent man from office is outrageous to me.

We have a domestic violence hate crime bill up for vote in NY.should the slasher be able to vote on this bill?
He’d be voting to send his and his fellow monsters asses to jail for a long time.
WTF?????

oops, sorry — didnt mean to ignite a dictionary war! I just have a pet peeve about news and non-medical/scientific sources referring to women as females.

Not saying it’s “incorrect” per se. Just that I dont like it.

No one ever talks about male presidents…

anyway …

19

DancesWithPumas 02.08.10 at 1:45 pm

1 a : a male person : a man or a boy b : an individual that produces small usually motile gametes (as spermatozoa or spermatozoids) which fertilize the eggs of a female
————-
usually flat breasts and a relatively angular body, at least for those who are in good physical condition, otherwise the male body is round and flabby especially in the stomach, gluteous maximus, and chin / neck area. The neck/chin areas are typically indistinquishable due the fat accumulation in that area.
The male will usually have hair growth on the back, chest, fingers and, face. Occassionally they will have hair growth on their palms as well.

Me too, no war just trying to get informed.

23

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 1:52 pm

By the way, I used to get furious that the scientific symbol for male was the circle with the bar pointing up to the sky or the mind but the symbol for female was the circle with the bar pointing down toward the body, like the difference was in the body. It still bugs me.

24

kat in your hat 02.08.10 at 1:56 pm

murphy, very glad to hear about your sister, and it’s nice you get to be in new surroundings, even if only for a little while, under unfortunate circumstances – still.

How’s that grammar? pfft.
_________

“Woman” vs. “female”…this is sort of women’s studies 101. Females can be people and animals. Women can only be humans. Female dogs are bitches. Some like to say, “Be quiet, *female*”

When you bring your pet to the vet and you fill out a form, what Sex do you give your animal? Male or female. Ya’d never fill out “woman” or “girl” for a female cat.

It’s not the exact definition in a dictionary that is really the problem, but you’ll notice in many headlines and just in regular speech, men will be referred to as men, and women will often be referred to as “female.” It’s a slight.

I looked up five stories on Costa Rican president Laura Chinchilla before I found one that said “first woman” instead of “first female.”

Women often deal with body/sexual objectification and dehuminization. Calling a woman a woman makes clear that one believes her to be a human and it shows respect.

25

DancesWithPumas 02.08.10 at 2:02 pm

And, as per usual, kat in our hats sums it up nicely.
Thank you.

I got one question, woman is also a form of man. Why is that acceptable. Is it cultural. If it is then it can and probably will change over time like the work that needed to be done to get people to stop referring to women as girls. I vote for dropping all the sexual references and the need we seem to have to divide people into one group or another. Just discussing here not arguing.

32

kat in your hat 02.08.10 at 2:35 pm

@#29 “I got one question, woman is also a form of man. Why is that acceptable. Is it cultural.”

Cultural, yes…biblical even. lol. “Man” is the word, the default. The first of all firsts. HuMANkind. WoMAN. “Man” even means: human kind. Everything is compared to “man.”

This is why you’ll sometimes (rarely) see “woman” spelled like “womyn,” “womon,” “womin” – it takes out “man.”

The meanings of man in reference to women’s titles is part of it as well, which brings in the destruction of women’s true last names (gone) over time. There’s a history to Mrs. Miss.., etc and it’s all in relation to, and in comparison to, MEN. (Men are called “Mr.” no matter their “status.”)

So, when grandma used to fill out envelopes addressed to me when I was little as “Miss Kat ….” it was to show the world that I was too young to be considered a married person, married to a MAN. All those titles are just to “educate” and broadcast to the world our status in relation to a man. There’s power in calling a woman or girl by her first and last name, only.

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 2:38 pm

Murphy, we’re debating, honest.

35

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 2:42 pm

kat in your hat
Yes, that’s me point – that it’s all in reference to the male, the man. I hate that.

But hating female and being okay with woman only makes sense in the historical fact that the woman’s movement fought for the word woman to replace the word girl to indicate that women were mature ans grownup just like men. But actually woman is no better than female. I want another word tht is not based on the other gender.

Right, woMan has Man word in it, but it at least brings us to the huMan level. “Woman” word and man as a mold – the original – won’t change until religion is…changed. But that will take many, many generations. I can’t erase the fact that some men wrote a few heavy duty books, that also star men as principal characters, and it is somehow enjoyed and recited every Sunday, only to be acted out in everyday life all the days of the week for centuries.

If Man is made from God and His image…How long do you think it will take before “woMan” word is changed? You see? It’s blasphemy to change it. ;) That’s the trick.

To all Pumas
EMBRACE YOUR INNER GIRL. A GIRL-CELL IN ALL OF US!
Also, for those who have not, as yet, had the occasion to visit the TED website I think you may find it educational and rewarding.

May I recommend a great talk by Eve Ensler creator of (The Vagina Monologues )listed below…

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) http://www.ted.com/

http://www.ted.com/talks/eve_ensler_embrace_your_inner_girl.html

In this passionate talk, Eve Ensler declares that there is a girl-cell in us all — a cell that we have all been taught to suppress. She tells heartfelt stories of girls around the world who have overcome shocking adversity and violence to reveal the astonishing strength of being a girl.

I didn’t always agree with Murtha, but he was a Hillary supporter and seemed like a fairly good guy. I’m sure he’ll be missed by the more conservative wing of the Dem Party.

Murphy, so good to hear sis will make a full recovery, tho the pain and length of it sound daunting.

regarding the “female” —I really hate referring to women as females. Online, it’s even worse (looking for housemates) to see them refer to themselves as “professional female” instead of female professional.

I mean, what the heck. As a profession you’re female? And on your weekends off?

Drag king?

Wasn’t Murtha considered Pelosi’s top deputy (unofficially because Steny Hoyer won the position officially). It will be interesting to see what the fall out from his loss will be in the House. I’m sorry he suffered from a mistake.

51

Zee 02.08.10 at 3:49 pm

OMG, Murphy. I went back and reread your second paragraph. The first time through I was so focused on the content I missed the grammatical free-for-all, but it’s slapstick level, for sure! :)

I’m blaming the hospital vigil. Who can type sober?

52

kat in your hat 02.08.10 at 3:53 pm

@#38 Now, if women come from men and men come from God, do you see how sacrilegious it is to be a lesbian or a feminist or a woman who shuns marriage, etc? It is perceived as a slap in the face to God. That’s the primal fear: Wrecking a foundational belief in an existing reality. You RUIN someone’s reality by being “that way,” and it terrifies people. They can’t cope with it. That’s why there are men and women who hate lesbians and feminists, etc. It’s a direct danger to their sense of reality. I can see why it’s frightening…insanity often is. And that’s what “insanity” feels like: an alternative reality. Wouldn’t you run from it? Course, then there is enlightenment and there is no longer fear.

I hope I make sense. But just take away “the big picture” and put it on a smaller scale: many people are terrified of change or anything that can be perceived as erratic. They need normalcy and something to count on. The bible is solid like that. The big religions are: something solid. Something one can count on. Read and believe, over and over again. Black and white. Straightforward and safe. People need to feel safe. It HURTS to learn more. It’s scary.

Sooo, women speaking out and progressing is scary on a very deep level. It endangers religion, a certain reality and sanity. lol. That’s the truth.

Would you forever stay in those warm comforting chains if you knew you’d be safe…forever and ever, or could you free yourself to the cold world with nothing to depend on but your own wits?

Anyway, when we talk about why women are poorly treated and name called disparagingly, there is a serious reason for it. A very deep and layered reason for it. I consider it Maintenance.

53

Zee 02.08.10 at 3:54 pm

BCL, I don’t know if the death was from complications or negligence. But it’s sad, either way.

Hospitals alone are nearly as much risk as they are godsends these days.

Oh, and we’re due for snow this week, so I was commiserating with your story down below. I would be up for pooling our resources and getting a big PUMA palace in Florida.

I had been looking in Baltimore, close to my family in DC. But they are under 2-plus feet of snow. Even Florida’s orange crop got ice. Maybe we should be thinking Costa Rica??

54

Zee 02.08.10 at 4:02 pm

kat, I would enlarge on your theory. The personal comfort and the drive to reproduce keep young women in thrall to brash Jon “the Groper” Favreau-type fratboys, as well.

And the entire freakout on abortion is rooted very deeply in these very things you bring up.

But my answer to all of them is that if we are made in God’s image She put those nipples on your chest for that reason. And x is the default chromosome. Y, the mutant.

My late sister-in-law used to argue this with me, but she was wrong. She was a Christian and a “scientist.” Sorry. There are many many species throughout the world that are female only, or almost female only with a few mutant males thrown in occasionally for genetic variety.

Female (not women, females across the entire living spectrum of creatures) are the default, the basic model. Male, the mutants. They just can’t deal with it.

55

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 4:03 pm

I’m basing my comments on Murtha’s death on something posted here saying one of his organs (probably intestine) was cut during th surgery, but I haven’t verifed that. Apparently they didn’t know about the injury or they could have stitched it back up. I’m going to look for the full story somewhere. BBL

For those interested in the English etymology of the word ‘female’, the Oxford English Dictionary is probably the world’s best source. Here is the entry for it (formatting glitches may make for rough reading; I will follow up the next comment with the OED entry for ‘male’):

Not having enough rains is what causes the mudslides when it does rain, but that isn’t all areas of California.

Florida has becme much more civilized in the past 20 years since all the development. We lived in a new suburb of Miami when I was about 10 and we, the kids, would lie in bed and smash the ticks on our wall with our shoes. We had rattlesnakes and a black widow spider outside our house. We never gave it a thought. When my parents retired to Florida in the late 80’s my Dad sprayed occasionally and there was no more problems with bugs.

LOL. This tread is cracking me up. I just got on and didn’t think I’d find the bottom.
Chiming in on Florida because I am like Zee. I really don’t want bugs and in particular spiders.
I’ve only been to two parts of Florida. Orlando and Destin.
Orlando was very buggy to the extent where it freaked me out.
When I went to Destin I was really worried because of that experience and Destin is right on the ocean so I thought it would be worse. I think the only bug I saw in Destin was a couple of ants and one lizard. No spiders at all.
Looooooved Destin, can’t wait to get back there someday.

FLBarbara- why do you think Orlando would have more bugs? Is is normal there for the cities to have more bugs? Here in Missouri it is the opposite. The city only has waterbugs (roaches) but the suburbs and rural areas have huge spiders and lots of other unmentionables.

89

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 5:30 pm

sheila7
Orlando is surrounded by more indeveloped areas since it is in the middle (not on the ocean) of the state. The bugs and creepy crawlies are indigenious to Florida but development wipes them out eventually.

They’re on Sarah Palin again:

The former vice presidential candidate seems to have been caught using curious crib notes during an interview this past weekend at the high-profile Tea Party Convention in Nashville. While speaking about her top political priorities, Ms. Palin gazed at her hand in a rather suspicious manner.

Later, Web researchers zoomed in on her left palm and found the following words scrawled in black ink: “Energy, Budget cuts (with “budget” crossed out), Tax, Lift American Spirits.” In an ironic twist during the speech, Ms. Palin worked in a jab against President Obama’s often-mocked use of TelePrompTers. You can watch the clip below or check out a close-up here.

Following the flap, the Web went wild. Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC mocked Ms. Palin by relying on her own crib notes to recap highlights from Palin’s appearance. Her keynote speech, it should be noted, had the crowd on its feet. “Run, Sarah, run,” the crowd chanted (as in “please run for president in 2012″).

Did you read about last weekend’s “tea party” convention in Nashville? Attendees paid $549 apiece for a weekend of activism and education capped by the main attraction: a speech by everybody’s favorite half-term former Alaska governor, Sarah Palin. For her efforts, Palin received more than $100,000 in speaking fees – and the adoration of legions of fans.

In honor of the tea party convention, we came up with a way for you to tell us what you think she’s saying. Just click on the link below, fill in the speech bubble, then submit it to us. We’ll post the best creations at dscc.org.

This is a small article on Vit D3 for winter supploentation

Mood changes synchronised to the seasons exist on a continuum between individuals, with anxiety and depression increasing during the winter months. An extreme form of seasonality is manifested as the clinical syndrome of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) with carbohydrate craving, hypersomnia, lethargy, and changes in circadian rhythms also evident. It has been suggested that seasonality and the symptoms of SAD may be due to changing levels of vitamin D3, the hormone of sunlight, leading to changes in brain serotonin. Forty-four healthy subjects were given 400 IU, 800 IU, or no vitamin D3 for 5 days during late winter in a random double-blind study. Results on a self-report measure showed that vitamin D3 significantly enhanced positive affect and there was some evidence of a reduction in negative affect. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for seasonality, SAD, serotonin, food preference, sleep, and circadian rhythms.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9539254

Search the internet for lots more info on the dosage and benefits of Vit D3. My friend and my sister in law who do not take any other supplements, have been put on it by their doctors.

Warning: I cannot tolerate fish oil and the D3 that I took was made of fish oil and caused my major stomach pain and gas. I’ve been advised to switch to the kind made fron lanolin.

The reason I like the reference “female” is that it is non-judge mental, just factual. Like, when does a girl become a woman? What if she is in-between? Besides, I am an animal lover and do not consider it an insult to be related. In fact, with some people, it is an insult to the animals.

111

Headclunker 02.08.10 at 7:06 pm

The time from the start of menstruation until maturity, adolescence, is not gender specific. Maybe the reference would be “adolescent girl”. But the reference of woman could imply sexual availability. That could even be dangerous as we live in this world with those who think with that which lies between their legs more than what is between there ears.

So, with all that confusion and the sexual availability implication, I prefer female. But then, I have been know to have difficulty with social cues.

Khamenei: Iran Set to Deliver ‘Punch’ to Stun West on Anniversary

Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a “punch” that will stun world powers during this week’s 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution, AFP reported.

“The Iranian nation, with its unity and God’s grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman, February 11, in a way that will leave them stunned,” Khamenei, who is also Iran’s commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel according to AFP.

The country’s top cleric was marking the occasion when Iran’s air force gave its support to revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a key event which led to the toppling of the U.S.-backed shah on February 11, 1979.

BillieJo,
I still don’t have news. The doctor was supposed to call today but didn’t. I’m calling back tomorrow and hopefully I will know something then.

What did the doctor say for you?

120

BillieJo 02.08.10 at 7:45 pm

BCL
It was like visiting an obot with a medical license. Of course my doctor was not around, and this woman kept me there for 4 hours, creepy collection of stuff and running from one place to another. Volunteered to write me a getoutta work pass until Thursday…but only could give me meds for the pain. Said, oh the body is good at healing itself, you should be feeling much better when we get the results of the tests.

I said in my worst patient voice…
“Well what do ya know, I came in here just so YOU would know what is wrong with me, but you won’t give me an antibiotic until you find out if the bacteria I left in the water bottle (after drinking from the bottle weeks earlier), multiplied and made me sick.”

She had this smug, self satisfied look on her face as she rolled her eyes and said, “Well, I can’t prescribe anything before I know what you have and you don’t need to blame me for it.” If she had made one of those head rolls, I would have smacked her.

I am a terrible patient, when I am sick, I want meds to get better. Anything less is a waste of time and money. All the while, I was thinking of the Frauds new health care bill, and how this experience might seem like the ‘Good old days’.

121

honora 02.08.10 at 7:49 pm

Big Cat Lover– I can’t believe that I do not know the answer to that, I am a Big Cake Lover. Indeed on this snow day I baked a chocolate cake made with mashed potatoes for my sonshine’s middle school heritage day. I think the reason that my Irish relatives came to America was to escape chocolate cake made with mashed potatoes, but little did they know that it would follow their descendants for decades.

122

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 7:50 pm

BillieJo
Geesh, that is so modern medicine. If you don’t want medication, that’s all they’ve got. If you ask for it, you can’t have it. Try upping the Vit C way up. Stop when you get diahrea.

123

BigCatLover 02.08.10 at 7:53 pm

honora
Dare I ask, is the cake heavy with the mashed potatos?

124

BillieJo 02.08.10 at 7:56 pm

BCL
Yea, this woman was protecting medication like it was the golden nectar from the Gods and only the near dead could pry it from her bare hands.

Sounds like I have to wait to use the VitC. I am trying to drink juice and eat a little.

Thanks.

Big Cat Lover– Nah, not at all, lass. Light as a feather. (Actually, it is frozen in my freezer, since school is closed tomorrow and probably thereafter. I have never tasted it, just got it on-line. Latest excuses for why Obama is failing and why they won’t work:

The Obama Defense Industry is busy. Excuses must be found. Scapegoats must be scaped. Blame must be assigned. The rush rush deployments of new Obama defenses by the Obama Defense Industry is due to the race Obama is now in – the race to the bottom. Obama is sinking in polls (47% disapprove in the latest poll, only 44% approve) faster than the stock market sinks. Which will reach bottom first?

As in last year’s campaigns, Obama lovers pose as “fair players” who will criticize Obama when criticism is due, but all the fake “criticisms” are another clever way to defend Obama. The defense ploy of the week is a return to “blame the staff“.

“Blame the staff” has made a triumphant return because other defend Obama ploys have not worked.

Friends have been trying to cheer me and send jokes…this is a pip

Irish Viagra

An Irish woman of advanced age visited her
physician to ask his advice on reviving her husband’s
libido.

‘What about trying Viagra?’ asked the doctor.

‘Not a chance’, she said. ‘He won’t even take an aspirin.’

‘Not a problem,’ replied the doctor.
‘Give him an ‘Irish Viagra’.
It’s when you drop the Viagra tablet into his coffee.
He won’t even taste it.
Give it a try and call me in a week to let me know
how things went..’

It wasn’t a week later when she called the
doctor, who directly inquired as to her progress.
The poor dear exclaimed, ‘Oh, faith, bejaysus
and begorrah! T’was horrid! Just terrible, doctor!’

‘Really? What happened?’ asked the doctor.

‘Well, I did as you advised and slipped it in
his coffee and the effect was almost immediate.
He jumped straight up, with a twinkle in his eye
and with his pants a-bulging fiercely!
With one swoop of his arm, he sent me cups and
tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to
tatters and took me then and there passionately on
the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute
nightmare!’

‘Why so terrible?’ asked the doctor, ‘
Do you mean the sex your husband provided
wasn’t good?’

‘Freakin’ jaysus, ’twas the best sex

PUMA is definately part of the political lexicon.
http://coloradopols.com/diary/11435/pat-caddell-opens-new-phase-of-romanoff-puma-insurgency
That is truly stunning, but given the direction Romanoff’s campaign has been headed over the last few weeks, tapping this kind of “PUMA” angst may be the only thing he has left. Caddell’s hiring betrays a willingness by Romanoff, at long last, to do anything he believes might level this increasingly lopsided contest–even at the expense of fellow Democrats, and his own credibility.

 Murpy, I think the amount of doctors on my shitlist is pretty colse to yours. After minor surgery, I was feeling better in Hawaii, and the nurses couldn’t get me released. I HATE hospitals, people jamming ice where it doesn’t belong, in the middle of the night.
Next day I though I was well enough, the story was my doctor was too busy to stop by and release me……………so I watched the hallway until I finnay spotted him, hobbled down the hall with my bear ass sticking out the back slit…I chased him down the hall and told him I would follow him around the hospital like this until he discarded.

If you want to be a delegate, your first step should be to contact your state party to determine what their process is. For information on running for a delegate position, an individual should call or write his or her respective State Democratic Party Headquarters and request a copy of the Delegate Selection Plan (or summary) and filing forms. These documents provide the information candidates need to know in order to run for delegate positions. All states require delegate candidates to file a “declaration of candidacy” in order to run. The deadline for this declaration varies among the states but is specified in each state’s plan. In some cases, the declaration must be accompanied with signatures of registered Democratic voters from that area. All filing requirements must be precisely followed.

In the state of FL when you join the local DNC an application is sent out via email to apply for a delegate position. Check your state rules.

term “female” is for animals, like chinchillas, not for humans

But Murphy, traditionally, “female” has been an adjective, just as “male” is. “Woman” is a noun, not an adjective.

We now commonly hear people say “woman teacher”, but do they ever say “man teacher”? Or do they say “male teacher”? I always hear the latter. The proper grammatical form is used for men, but not for women. I’ve always suspected “woman” started being used as an adjective in place of “female” to somehow ridicule or belittle women. For instance, when they wanted to belittle female drivers, they always said (and still say) “woman driver”. It seems to have started back in the 1930s, when women started the long fight for more independence and choices in their lives.

Everytime you hear someone using “woman” as an adjective, play a word game. Insert the word “man” instead, and see how weird it sounds used as an adjective….

Canadian Official Charged in Murders
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 8:50 p.m. ET

TORONTO (AP) — The commander of Canada’s largest Air Force base, who once flew dignitaries around the country, has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two women

Ontario Provincial Police Det. Insp. Chris Nicholas said Monday that Col. Russell Williams, 46, was also charged in the sexual assaults of two other women. Williams was arrested Sunday in Ottawa.

The charges left Canada’s military in a state of shock.

Williams, a 23-year military veteran, was appointed as the base commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Trenton, Ontario last July. Trenton is Canada’s busiest Air Force base and is providing logistical support for Canada’s missions in Haiti and Afghanistan as well as support for the Vancouver Winter Games.

Williams is charged with the first-degree murder of Jessica Lloyd, 27, of a Belleville, Ontario, resident whose body was found earlier Monday, and Marie Comeau, a 38-year-old corporal found dead in her Brighton, Ontario, home in November.

This morning brings an incredible opportunity of several levels for PUMA’s. I’ve not caught up on comments from yesterday pm, but will just forge on. The topic is the election of Illinois Democratic nominee Lt. Gov. Scott Cohen. But then much emerged about the creep he is. He was persuaded to drop out.Made his announcement in a bar – the Chicago way – and I’ll rely on the following clip to tell the rest of the story:

Democratic Party leaders began the delicate dance of picking a new running mate for Gov. Pat Quinn on Monday, while emphasizing there was no horse-trading involved to get a scandal-ridden Chicago pawnbroker to abandon the primary nomination for lieutenant governor. snip

Already, all five of the rivals whom Cohen bested in the primary election a week ago said they want to be considered to fill the vacancy and would present their credentials to Democratic Party leaders from around the state who will make the decision.

But sources said Quinn has discussed with top Democrats the possibility of selecting Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran who lost a 2006 run for Congress in the western suburbs before becoming an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Duckworth could not be reached for comment.

The unusual selection process is fraught with peril for Democrats. They are essentially substituting their judgment for those of the voters, while also raising the potential for infighting and bruised egos as they consider candidates on issues ranging from hometown to sex to race.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/elections/ct-met-lt-gov-0209-20100208,0,2656972.story

Repeat #1: They are essentially substituting their judgment for those of the voters….
Repeat #2: The Democratic gubernatorial candidate is interested in tapping a woman who is also a handicapped veteran.

Huffington Post says Support High for Campaign Finance Reform based on a poll taken:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20100208/cm_huffpost/453666

Sam Stein Sam Stein – Mon Feb 8, 1:40 pm ET
In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling that corporations can spend an unlimited amount of money on political campaigns, the landscape has grown ripe for the passage of strict campaign finance legislation.

Support is incredibly high for reforms currently being considered by Congress to stem the tide of corporate involvement in elections, according to a poll released on Monday by a bipartisan group of firms.

From the study released by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research in conjunction with McKinnon Media for Common Cause, Change Congress and the Public Campaign Action Fund:

“A majority of voters strongly favor both requiring corporations to get shareholder approval for political spending (56 percent strongly favor, 80 percent total favor) and a ban on political spending by foreign corporations (51 percent strongly favor, 60 percent total favor).”

Both of those provisions are staples of the more than half-dozen pieces of legislation currently under consideration by lawmakers in the House and Senate. But poll respondents expressed even more support for tougher campaign finance restrictions, in a sign of just how eager the public is for limits on money in politics.
snip
There is one major caveat — voters almost instinctively say that they are in favor of strong campaign finance reform legislation. It’s the office holders who are the obstacle. To that end, respondents were asked whether they would be more inclined to support their member of Congress “if he or she votes in favor of a reform package that includes the Fair Elections Now Act as well as limits on spending by foreign corporations.” By a net of 15 percentage points, the answer was yes (and this was even after hearing the opposing viewpoint to such legislation).
snip
Indeed, 56 percent of respondents say Obama has not done enough to reduce the influence of special interests while just 35 percent say he “has made [an] effort to reduce [the] influence of special interests.” Fifty-one percent said the influence of special interests has increased since Obama took office while just 32 percent said it has decreased.

President Obama declared today that “a sense of purpose that transcends petty politics” must be forged by Democrats and Republicans to create more jobs, reduce the deficit and find at least some common ground on health care.

“We can’t afford grandstanding at the expense of actually getting something done,” Mr. Obama said as he made a surprise appearance at the daily White House briefing for the media only hours after he convened his first monthly bipartisan meeting he called for in the State of the Union address.

Anti-Tea Party Web Site Part of Scheme to Funnel Funds
By Joseph Abrams
– FOXNews.com

A new Web site targeting the tea parties is a part of a complex network of money flowing from the mountainous coffers of the country’s biggest labor unions and trickling slowly into political slush funds for Democratic activists.

A seemingly grassroots organization that’s mounted an online campaign to counter the tea party movement is actually the front end of an elaborate scheme that funnels funds — including sizable labor union contributions — through the offices of a prominent Democratic party lawyer.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/02/09/anti-tea-party-web-site-scheme-funnel-funds/
A Web site popped up in January dedicated to preventing the tea party’s “radical” and “dangerous” ideas from “gaining legislative traction,” targeting GOP candidates in Illinois for the firing squad.

Zerobama is an American citizen. The entire debate is incorrectly framed on both sides. The point is what did the founding fathers mean? There is thought that natural-born meant having no other ties to the “old countries.”

By his own admission, Fraudbama was born with multiple nationalities.

That is what should’ve been discussed, alongside whether he was a Muslim or an atheist before, at a very late age, Rev. Wright (in Zero’s own words) “brought him to Jesus.”

Beck and ALL the blowhards perpetuate the extremist views, because no one, not one outlet, ever discusses the reality of both these issues.

PUMAs, I’m too beat to catch up on the thread yet, but just saw disturbing news on TGW and in case it’s not been brought up, wanted to alert everyone…there is a nasty rumor that Keith “take her into a room and only he come out” Ubermann is being considered for sexist pig fraudbama’s press secretary….

Ugh, just ugh….bbl….

Glenn Beck apparently believes BO is a natural born American and commented that the PUMAs started the “birther” controversy. I will try to find a link to confirm this second hand info. My husband saw the segment of his show and told me: Hey, Glenn Beck was talking about the PUMAs.
I like Beck, but he better just watch it, LOL!

Thanks for the update normapapuma, I would never grill ya to find me a link. I’ve watched Beck a couple of times and know in one show he throws out a lot of ideas. Your husband recalls… good enough for me.
Thanks.

from Zee’s 184

WASHINGTON – Even the White House’s top spokesman is getting in on the act of mocking former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin for looking to talking points written on her palm during a speech to “tea party” activists.

Robert Gibbs showed the words “hope” and “change” on his hand as he started his daily briefing with reporters on Tuesday.

Many in the room, where President Barack Obama had spoken just moments before about the need for bipartisanship, groaned at the political shot.

Palin spoke Saturday in Nashville and photographs and video show she had “energy,” “tax” and “lift American spirits” on her hand. During one question, she looked down at the palm of her hand for a cue.

In her speech she mocked Obama’s use of teleprompters.

I am not a Palin fan but knocking her down doesn’t make obama look any better… if anything it shows he’s degree of pettiness and immaturity.

Dear DSCC: Can I fill in the bubble and tell you what Sarah is saying?
Posted on February 9, 2010 by Uppity Woman
I’m telling you that the “New” Democratic party is comprised of complete infants with perpetual spittle bubbles blowing out of the sides of their infantile mouths. Did it ever occur to them that Sarah Palin enjoys baiting them?

I want the green one! No! IIIIIIIII want the green one!
Still, being the immature adolescents they have become, there are thousands of internet hits on the subject of this post. I zeroed in on the Canada Free Press hit. This is because of the totally appropriate crayon graphic they included in their story– as a perfect example of just how ridiculous the Democratic Party is beginning to look to normal, reasoning people, also known as “Adults”. Appropriately entitled, The Crayon Politics of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee – the author discusses what the rest of the search hits are discussing– the stupid, childish and downright embarrassing email the DSCC sent to their remaining loyalists (as the numbers continue to dwindle).

I truly hope you are ready for this, because to be honest, you simply cannot make this shit up.

ALL the pundits are in a frenzy trying to figure out who is benefiting from the BO backlash/rash. They are trying to define the Tea Party Movement as “Conservative” or better yet “right wing”. I bet there are plenty of independents and moderate Dems in the movement. And PUMAs are in the mix. We will not sit down and shut up. And Sarah is a serious person, unlike these damn jackasses like Gibbs. Hate em. Will never get my vote.

Well, now that I blew off a little steam…I’d like to say we should just stay on message: Nobama.
No more debt.
No more fraud.
No more radical wackos in charge of government agencies.
No more lawyers for terrorists.
No Obamanation government run healthcare, auto companies, banks, schools, insurance companies, etc.

how are all the sista’s tonight?

196

normapapuma 02.09.10 at 10:12 pm

invalid
You’re right of course. I am not running for office, so I haven’t thought of a platform. I personally would be happy if the badministration would just pay the bills and stop making up more rules and pipe dreams.
Get out of my lesson planning, get out of my business, get out of my personal affairs…
Not much of a to DO list. What would you suggest for an agenda?

197

DancesWithPumas 02.09.10 at 10:12 pm

Can’t speak for anyone else but all is well here!

198

invalidresponse 02.09.10 at 10:19 pm

agenda, platform… are you kidding me??
I still want the exact same things for this country that I did, during the primaries, before PUMA was formed Ozero has not changed that about me. Has he changed you???

Hey Caspie, thanks for the good thoughts and video. You always cheer me up.
(Still waiting on the test results before I am given ANY meds, the tests that have finished so far already show a urinary infection…ssssssssssssssssssh, don’t pass it on.) So the Dr. expects the remainder of the results to come in tomorrow and her note for me to be off of my job ends on Thursday. So, that should give me overnight to heal enough to work the next day.

I am livid!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still want more power for women, but without giving more to the government. I want better education and safer streets, but now I realize that’s why I became a teacher. I work at it every day and I don’t know if the Fed government is helping or making matters worse. I think he has changed me. I have come to appreciate all the things he has tried to take away from me and my children.

Lawmakers Expel N.Y. State Senator Over Assault
By JEREMY W. PETERS
ALBANY — The New York State Senate on Tuesday night expelled a senator convicted of assaulting his companion, the first time a member of the Legislature was forced from office in nearly a century.

Hiram Monserrate, a Democrat from Queens, was convicted last fall of misdemeanor assault after a fight with his companion, Karla Giraldo, that left her with a deep gash on her face, though he was acquitted of more serious felony assault charges.

Rather than bringing a close to Mr. Monserrate’s legislative career, the expulsion could be the beginning of a lengthy fight that would play out in the courts and create further instability in the already volatile political atmosphere in Albany.

As the Senate moved forward with a vote, Mr. Monserrate’s lawyers were drafting a temporary restraining order seeking to have him reinstated. One of the lawyers, Norman Siegel, said the order would be filed Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan.
