Some tweets that’ve come across my Twitter Deck overnight and this morning:

Going nuts with a sick kid whose illness (whatever the hell it is — sinusitis? meningitis? flu?) just won’t go away and die already. Back in my day, if you got sick, which was like, never, you MAYBE had to spend one day in bed. This lingering illness with persistently high and recurring fever is freaking me the hell out.

Oh Scotty Massachusetts already has MANDATED health insurance. Why not mention THE old repub GOV made the plan to MANDATE health insurance in Massachusetts. WE have MANDATED insurance. Oh you wily politicians…both you and Martha are duds. Do you all not see how you are being used by the power players. Martha you got tons of money to run from the thugs and Scotty you are being portrayed as the under dog by the (fat chance) poor out of
money and falling by the wayside, un popular, never going to get the mojo back republicans.

Gimme me a Break!

Wow – this is disgusting…..I can’t support a woman who would not think that this crime was worthy of gazillions of dollars in bail. Omygawd – this poor little baby.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/01/06/some_saw_coakley_as_lax_on_05_rape_case/?page=full

In October 2005, a Somerville police officer living in Melrose raped his 23-month-old niece with a hot object, most likely a curling iron.

Keith Winfield, then 31, told police he was alone with the toddler that day and made additional statements that would ultimately be used to convict him.

But in the aftermath of the crime, a Middlesex County grand jury overseen by Martha Coakley, then the district attorney, investigated without taking action.

With the 2010 election year barely under way, Senators Chris Dodd and Byron Dorgan along with Gov. Bill Ritter — all Democrats — ditch plans to run for re-election in the latest signs of trouble for President Obama’s party.

3 down…ALL must go!

High Fives for Karen Polito!!!!
——————————–
Recently, the question of bail in child rape cases made local headlines when a Kingston man was accused of raping a 3-year-old girl while free on $10,000 cash bail, which was imposed after an earlier charge of breaking and entering and raping a 5-year-old girl. Prosecutors had recommended $200,000 cash bail after the first alleged rape, but a judge would not agree to it.

Following the Kingston incidents, state Representative Karyn E. Polito, a Shrewsbury Republican, filed legislation that would require prosecutors to request a dangerousness hearing in all child rape cases.

“What happened to this little girl is horrendous,’’ said Polito, referring to Winfield’s niece.

Nice wrap up of your twitters.
Moms do not like illnesses lingering within their kids.
I don’t know if this applies to your sick angel, but it’s what was wrong with one of mine way back in time. The lone symptom which I can recall was the child’s necessity to vomit once daily, and that defied all the logic I possessed. A clever woman doctor figured out what I could not imagine: post nasal drip. When enough of the obnoxious stuff dripped into his stomach, it was rejected. Over and over.
Perhaps this example of thinking outside the box will steer you to the reasoning you need to act appropriately. I surely hope so.

Rasmussen up to -10; guess his ranting about undie bomber is impressing someone. Regarding Nancy Pelosi – somewhere this day I she cited town hall meetings as examples of the transparency this administration has provided. Rewriting history, the woman is. Because she is so powerful, I’m calling on her husband to step forward and tell us what the hell is wrong with her.

I wanted to do it for Reagan because the Republicans certainly knew he had Alzheimers and yet kept mum as he finished two terms.

Nancy has something wrong with her – not saying it’s Alzheimers, but it is totally inappropriate for a person of her convoluted logic to be running the country as she is. Into the ground, I might add.

Murphy, of all childhood ailments, fever would freak me out the most. Low-grade fever is one thing, but high fevers? Yikes. Is it in reaction to an ear or throat infection? I hope she heals soon!

the year Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize — for a slide show on Global Warming.

This woman was also up for the award.

now, I have a question, what does the weather have to do with peace? Tell me please, I want to know. I hope Al is all comfy in his 20,000 sqare foot home or somewhere, probably down in the Islands somewhere to avoid the brutal record breaking winter
blanket of frozen temps that we are all enduring.

By the way, I would get excited about Dobbs retiring, but Obama im quite sure already has the perfect job picked out for him.
He will just be moved to another position.

Murphy Matt has that every year..ear infection. Drives his parents nuts too. Doctor always says was he in a great deal of pain..ear looks very red. No he acts unwell but not a lot of pain but spiking fevers.
She dislikes giving him antibiotics if it can be avoided.

13

Murphy: has your child been vaccinated, and the fever
returning is the concern about the swine flu, in our children.

I’m not trying to scare you, just want you aware. I do this
for a living. A continuous high fever which is coming and
going, is most likely a bronchial problem, and may be
pneumonia, which is a bad thing.
Have you gone to the ER—with her.

Nikkismom…I can’t bear to think of that poor baby’s injuries. But Martha didn’t construct the system. As HP noted in her excerpt, this is still happening. A child rapist was let out on bail and raped again just recently in Massachusetts. We need to address this on a legislative level, which as HP also noted, Karyn Polito is finally doing.

Coakley didn’t do that because it was not her job to file legislation. Her job entailed fielding 900 sexual abuse complaints a year. So multiply the horrifying details of this case by 3, and do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next….and never stop.

I can’t relate to Martha Coakley’s dispassionate demeanor personally. But what would you have a professional do? Break down three times a day?

The media is building up Scott and bringing out sensational details about specific cases Coakley handled for the same old reason: they like to create horse races.

And as far as why people are going to be voting against Martha, this Boston Globe commenter says it best:

“Martha is just an ambitious woman who keeps looking to a higher office.”

Oh the horror.

16

BigCatLover 01.06.10 at 11:17 am

here is Scott Brown on the issues (hint: right wing, not moderate):

19

HP Boston 01.06.10 at 11:35 am

Yup two peas in a pod………

“Scott is just an ambitious man who keeps looking to a higher office.”

Oh the horror.

20

NikkisMom 01.06.10 at 11:37 am

“But what would you have a professional do? Break down three times a day?”

It was only after the toddler’s mother filed applications for criminal complaints that Coakley won grand jury indictments charging rape and assault and battery.

Even then, nearly 10 months after the crime, Coakley’s office recommended that Winfield be released on personal recognizance, with no cash bail. He remained free until December 2007, when Coakley’s successor as district attorney won a conviction and two life terms.

No, simply protect the child – an innocent female child, btw.

I don’t care if it’s 900 cases a year or 10,000 a year….or if the prosecutor was a man or a woman, this man was free for 2 years before being convicted. Who knows what other children he molested or raped?

I am sick & tired of the way child molestors / rapists are handled with kid gloves in this country…this child will live with those scars the rest of her life.

Martha didn’t have to write legislation – just make sure that this man couldn’t be free to do it to another baby during the 2 years he was awaiting trial.

**Disclaimer** – I don’t know all the details of this case, I’m not a lawyer nor do I know the law in MA and I most certainly would not want to be in anyone’s shoes that was involved in this case. These are just my opinions based on what I’ve read.

Would the reaction be the same if it had been a male prosecutor that let this man out without bail?

#7 from the npr top political question for 2010:

7. Will the Supreme Court overturn the current campaign finance regime?

We may know soon. The high court’s next day for issuing decisions is Jan. 11, and the big case many expect to see come down is Citizens United v. FEC, a case involving an advocacy group’s spending in opposition to Hillary Clinton’s presidential candidacy. It challenges a key feature of the 2003 McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, and by extension, the longstanding ban on corporations contributing directly to campaigns.

If the court rules as many expect, campain finance law as we know it will be radically changed, and an influx of cash from businesses, unions and other interests could make the avalanche of ads we saw in 2008 seem like a campaign conducted in secret.

Mornin’ PUMAs -

Wow Murphy – sorry to hear about the youngun’ – I’m not a doctor so I won’t make any suggestions but I sure hope she gets better really really soon – could this be something related to the H1N1 flu?

Have been watching a big orange machine with big claw bucket on it tear down a building right across the street from my apt bldg – it was a business that made those concrete fountains & things with a living space above – probably a story & 1/2 high – city bought (probably threat of imminent domain) & they have been messing around there since last summer – cutting wires & chopping down shrubs & bushes – now the bldg is going down & everything is going into basement – main part of bldg was concrete blocks – funny – probably took awhile to build originally but only one day to tear down – there is also a house next door – big space between – people that lived there were there before I moved in this place (13 yrs ago in April) & they were working on the place all that time – residing, building big wraparound porch (almost deck-like) big garage with all kinds of stuff in it (cars were parked outside – why build a garage if not used for cars? never can understand that logic) – anyway now that the place is halfways decent looking – city bought those people out too & guess their place will be torn down or maybe moved on one of those house movers thingys? Don’t know what the city is going to do but guess I will find out over the next few months…………………..

Didn’t watch much news yesterday – making up for it kinda today – holy crap – are these Dems goin’ out with a bang or what? Let the lawsuits begin against all the shit they are going to try & push thru – makes me sick to my stomach to realize how much my former party has changed & it’s definitely not for the better – I was raised to work hard for what I wanted and/or needed & that I was entitled to nothing except paying taxes & dying – things sure have changed – everybody wants the government to take care of them – not me – when I see the screw ups – I just wanna scream & shout no no no………..

Oh well to quote Scarlet – tomorrow is another day – gotta get thru this one first………………..

24

Oy fucking vey…..2012 looks like a retch plus pure vomit all the way to the polls!
—————
Look to see a lot of Tim Pawlenty, who passed up a third term as governor of Minnesota to focus on his future. Right now he is mostly looking for name recognition.

Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, has the name but needs a new style, a new pitch and a new connection to the militant wing. Can he get that stumping for the further right? And will they want him?

Mike Huckabee, yet another former governor, now has to explain his generous treatment of convicts in Arkansas along with his tax increases. Can he do that while appearing on behalf of other people?

And can Newt Gingrich hit the hustings rhapsodizing about 1994 without reminding people of what happened after that?

25

Social-Psyche 01.06.10 at 12:11 pm

Ha, NPR is saying the Democrats now have *4* open seats in November. I missed who the fourth is.

This is one of those love/hate days. I love snow, I love PUMAs, I love that tomorrow means I got through another day…

- of another child being raped, and often mutilated too, minute by minute in this country

- of slavery, in one form or another, here and now in the USA

- of wrongheaded arguments over whether the {D} or {R} incumbent will either “balance” or “support” El Presidente Nero O’Zero in his allegedly “socialist” agenda, oh puh-leeze.

PUMAs, we are facing a corporatist takeover. Obobblehead is a corporatist. So is Arianna Huffinpuff. So is Scott Brown and so is Chris Dodd.

So there.

26

NikkisMom 01.06.10 at 12:17 pm

BTW, Zee – I don’t support Scott Brown either. I hate all politicians right now – I’m with HP – vote all the bums out! Don’t know yet who to replace them with – monkeys, maybe?

BUT, I will say this: If it is the intention to stop the Obama and Congress agenda, then does a democrat that will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for Obama deserve support? I dunno – I’m so conflicted these days. :(

The withdrawals of Dorgan and Dodd are nothing more than a political move. They didn’t stand a chance of getting re-elected. Obama will now be able to run more electable democrats or rather more ‘rubber stamps’ in those states.

27

BigCatLover 01.06.10 at 12:18 pm

Bob Beckel on Fox said Dodd is leaving to ensure that the Conn. Senate seat will stay in Democratic hands. He said Dodd might have won re-election, but by leaving he ensures the seat will be dem. with the dem candidate that is running now. So Obama sends another one under the bus.

My husband and I sat through a commercial together the other night..SPCA. Sad faces of dogs and cats….heart breaking.
My husband said ,” boy the orange cat at the end where his paw reaches out of the cage gets to me.” Ahh my dear, sweet man, BUT then he turned to me and said. “The animal rights groups have tons of laws that are reported and enforced, people gather to help animals, they are outraged and vocal. I guess it is b/c animals are helpless but you never see it for WOMEN and CHILDREN. The laws are a joke, he said.”
I bit my tongue so as not to interfere with his DEEP thoughts.

I wanted to say b/c men love dogs and hate women, men make laws and do not enforce them.
He would feel personally attacked and I can not blame him for all the shit in the world.
And he is very sick and I love him.

Btw, that O’Zero link is about how he and his pal Timmy Geithner are using the IRS to take over Sioux Indian lands:

Obama Sells Out The Sioux
“America’s own Real Estate Shyster-in-Chief, Barack Obama, is selling out *two* nations with a new Sioux Indian land grab by the IRS. This hypocritical Christmas gift from him and Timothy Geithner is a cozy deal for a wind energy cartel but a dirty steal of taxpayers’ money and a tribe’s future.”

They didn’t waste any time. Just a couple of weeks ago, they auctioned off the land of some of the poorest people in America. A judge stopped it just long enough for the Crow Creek Sioux to come up with a final appeal at the end of March.

Is the IRS run by {R}s or {D}s? Both! A swindler is a swindler. O’Zero is a swindler, so are Geithner, Valerie Jarrett, and nearly all the Republicans yelling about him but… doing nothing to stop the IRS, and the corporate monopoly who want the land, from stealing it right out from under the people.

My quote may be slightly skewed from the intent of the article:

Nancy Pelosi takes swipe at President Obama’s campaign promises
snip A reporter reminded the San Francisco Democrat that in 2008, then-candidate Obama opined that all such negotiations be open to C-SPAN cameras.
“There are a number of things he was for on the campaign trail,” quipped Pelosi, who has no intention of making the deliberations public. snip
The House aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Pelosi has been miffed with Obama’s tilt toward the Senate plan and his expectation that the House would simply go along with the Senate bill out of political necessity.

Hi yaz, sistermoon in #35:

Based on some listserv e-mails I was receiving during the ‘08 campaign months, and on blog posts of course, I’d say a lot of NDNs supported him, or were giving him an open mind and ear, at the very beginning. But our/their built-in sh!t-detection equipment is very sensitive, so he was sniffed out once he began to backtrack, and he was foolish enough to be a no-show for a couple of important Indian events. “Obama speaks with forked tongue” quickly became the obvious joke.

I think at keast a few of those same blogs from back then are included in Victoria’s links for her “Obama Sells Out the Sioux” miscellani.org article.

You can bet the list of Native American blogs opposing him is growing, sistermoon.

Jayzus – listening to gibbsey um & uh his way thru a sentence is just as painful as listening to the fraud (when I’m not quick enough to click to another channel) – ‘course he’s trying so hard to spin an answer instead of actually answering a question that that contributes to his stupid speaking style – doesn’t anyone answer a question honestly anymore (besides PUMAs) that is?

I agree vote the bums out – am considering sending a letter to Sarah Palin (my ex but still friend (I didn’t divorce her) sister in law lives on opposite end of lake in Wasilla – maybe I’ll send it to her & have her deliver it directly to the Palin house – I’m gonna tell her that I am not a republican nor a democrat any longer but that I also still believe that my body is my body to make decisions about & that no one else has that right – no one – so back off & let PRO-CHOICE be the law of the land – also gonna let her know that I am not religious and do not believe in ‘god’ – superpower somewhere but trying to figure it out is above my pay grade and frankly I don’t care – all of them are cults to one degree or another – believe in the Golden Rule – so she can cool down the god talk too – don’t care if she wants to talk to god but don’t force on everyone else – I can be conservative in the literal sense about most things & maybe a little liberal in others – have never been a progressive and never will be – too close to socialism for me & that’s bad………………….anyway, working on my letter to her – maybe copy to Steel of the RNC also to quit thinking that just becuz the dems are in the black hole doesn’t automatically mean the repubs are climbing out – independents could really be a good thing – not beholden to either one of the crooked party machines………………………

home from the so called job interview. Spent last night researching at&t. memorized vision statement. went over my skillset, went over all possible scenarios of what would you do questions, what are your strong attributes, what are your weaknesses. This morning took shower, did hair making sure to try to hide gray patches as much as possible. Pantsuit clean, ironed, purple blouse. Looking pretty good so far. Set navigator, got there 15 minutes early, just early enough. Walk in. one asian girl at a counter, att posters on wall, fill out short information sheet…then…
out walks a zit faced 20 something male, shaking my hand introducing himself as if he was a seasoned CEO of a major corporation. We go into a room with tables and a laptop and a few chairs. His opening statement was We are a marketing firm for att. You will know by 7pm if you are the right candidate……
(thoughts of fuck off you piece of shit pre-pubescent boy who hasn’t even grown into that putrid green suit you are wearing were swirling around in my head)
He then proceeded to tell me the hours were anywhere from 40 to 80 a week, and you have to go to peoples homes to sell the Uverse product from att. There was a below minimum wage salary and commission which would be discussed after they decided if they wanted me. Have any questions? WTF? Yes I sure the hell do I thought. He stood up, said thanks for coming in. I said under my breath kiss my Italian ass, and have a great day! Total time in “interview” 15 minutes.

For anyone interested in having the final round of HC (‘deathcare’) bill discussions opened up to public view on C-Span (as BO promised during the campaign, and as the CEO of C-Span has offered to do), this is a link to a petition site Greta posted this morning at gretawire. It’s a petition called ‘Let the Cameras In.’ Why not force BO, Emanuel, Pelosi, Reid and the Congressional Obamacrats to do their dirty dealing in full view of the American people? The HC (‘deathcare’) bill needs to go down in defeat. Perhaps the camera lights can show the way…

Have you considered offering your services as an independent professional consultant rather than as an employee?)

I worked at a location in NJ for 20 years. Management sucked. Pay was exceptional, and that’s why I stayed. My immediate supervisor had it in for the company – they nearly laid him off 6 years before I got there. So his rule was screw the company: put down 10 hours o’time every week but don’t work it. On business trips, pad expenses 20%. Etc. After 10 years I complained about this in an venue through which they could pinpoint my division, but not me. There was an investigation; two of our higher division’s higher ups located in a different state were shown the door.
Just amazing. I’ve no idea how other locations are, and this was decades ago. So I probably should have taken the higher road and resisted the rant.

theamericanway #6 – not saying this to be snarky because I am really mad at Mrs Pelosi but seriously had not thought that something could be wrong with her. She is truly delusional talking about their town hall meetings. A while back when Zee mentioned feeling sorry for her, when Reid put his arm around her shoulder and she rolled her eyes, I was tempted to say that I too had felt a pang of concern that she had not looked at all well of late. I was thrilled when she was elected Speaker but her behavior from 2008 on wiped out any support for her. Wonder if she is unwell?

28th Amendment
I received this from a neighbor yesterday – no idea where it started but I think it is an excellent idea. PLEASE consider sending it on to those in your email address book
———————-
For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that Congress members could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they didn’t pay into Social Security, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform that is being considered…in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn’t seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don’t care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop.

This is a good way to do that. It is an idea whose time has come.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:

“Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States”.

Each person contact a minimum of twenty people on their Address list, in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

Then in three days, all people in The United States of America will have the Message. This is one proposal that really should be passed around.

My ‘understanding’ is that they do exempt themselves from the provisions in this Bill. It is also my understanding that all government employees do not pay into Social Security – have their own government system that follows them into retirement. I have never understood that – why WE are forced into SS and government employees are not. You can bet your bottom dollar if they were forced to be covered by the same benefit packages (and laws) as the rest of us things would change rapidly.

BUT, I will say this: If it is the intention to stop the Obama and Congress agenda, then does a democrat that will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for Obama deserve support? I dunno – I’m so conflicted these days.

The withdrawals of Dorgan and Dodd are nothing more than a political move. They didn’t stand a chance of getting re-elected. Obama will now be able to run more electable democrats or rather more ‘rubber stamps’ in those states.

Whoa – the arrogance is just astounding….

Congress Tinkers with Witholding Tax Tables for 2010

Recently, retired military have received e-mail messages notifying them of a withholding tax increase. The email states:

NO ANNUAL COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT (COLA) WILL BE ADDED TO MILITARY RETIRED PAY IN 2010.

DUE TO RECENT LEGISLATION YOUR FEDERAL WITHHOLDING TAX HAS CHANGED.

After much investigating and several discussions with the IRS, it appears the Democrats have played a “cash-flow trick” on working Americans and are taking more out of American’s paychecks across the board–all the while touting the Making Work Pay tax credit.

..snip…
Unlike the middle class wage earners, who are going to see huge amounts taken out of their paychecks, unless they increase their exemptions on their W4 form, it’s an increase that most wouldn’t even notice–$10 or $20 in some cases. Here are some of the “highlights” of the new 2010 withholding tables:

I have a question – answer or not – do these companies that outsource jobs overseas because it is cheaper to manufacture whatever it is they manufacture ever stop to think who’s gonna buy their shit? If it is cheaper to make overseas then maybe they should try to sell it overseas also but whoa – if they don’t charge more than it costs to make, they don’t make a profit but, if they pay shit wages to the serfs – they can’t afford to buy it and if nobody is working here in the US where we used to have pretty good stuff made here and also made pretty good wages – but now have no money because the jobs are being outsourced overseas – we won’t be buying it *whatever it is’ either – isn’t this kind of a catch-22 syndrome?

Just wonderin’

Sadly, yes, there is a double standard. Witness the Willie Horton card used against Dukakis. And yet the evangelical Huckabee had mercy on some murderous fool who also assaulted children and went on to mow police down dead in a coffee shop. Nary a PEEP did we hear from the media on Huckabee’s complicity. Why don’t you concern yourself with that?

And I’m just pointing that out. I don’t think we should crucify Huckabee for his mercy. You’re right. We’re not in their shoes. We have NO CLUE what it’s like to have their responsibilities.

What we do have power over is telling the vulture media class to go devour themselves when they seek to character-destroy politicians based on hysteria for no other reason than leveling the playing field so they have a horserace to “report.”

The facts are that you can promote a homophobic republican male over a to the bitter end HILLARY SUPPORTING Dem woman over my dead body.

Just some perspective.

Ummm, yes the media did cover it. And you have no idea about my concern over that. Lastly, Huckabee isn’t running for office – Martha is. The old “he did it too” – pointing to someone else’s wrongs doesn’t make it right for the other person.

“The facts are that you can promote a homophobic republican male over a to the bitter end HILLARY SUPPORTING Dem woman over my dead body.”

Zee, cpying this from the article you linked to in #87 because i like the listing of those who went down in flames.

‘When Chris Dodd stabbed Hillary in back by jumping on the hope and change express during the 2008 primaries – endorsing the fledgling Teleprompter reader over his longtime friend and colleague – Dodd must have known that it would come back to bite him. After all, he remarked at the time:

“I’m sure she’ll remember, for the rest of her life, who was with her and who wasn’t.”

Yes, I’m sure she will. And I’m sure she is laughing her head off in pure schaudenfreude at Dodd’s sorry fate right now. Or more like pitying him and the rest of the people who thought becoming Obamacrats would serve them well in their futures.

Wrong.

Dodd joins these other flailing, humiliated Clinton backstabbers in the trash bin of history: Greg Craig, Bill Richardson, Tom Daschle, Nancy Pelosi, David Paterson, Chris Matthews, Howard Dean, John Kerry, Her Royal Highness Princess Caroline Kennedy of Schlossberg, Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson Jr., and John Edwards.

How do you like the President now, guys? Karma is indeed a b—h. Named Rodham Clinton.’

You need merely wave your arms in the Snow and it’ll make angels for you. The nasty frosty Ice won’t let you do that. It just does costly damage to roofs, shovels, trees ‘n’ flowers, and most heartbreakingly, to the Reputation of Snow.

Among potential Democrats to replace Dorgan is Heidi Heitkamp, a former state attorney general and tax commissioner. North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy said Wednesday that he’s running for re-election to his House seat.

More trouble for Democrats could be forthcoming.

Former Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee told MSNBC that he was seriously considering a primary challenge to New York Sen. Received from Courage Campaign asking for support from all over the country not just California.

[This is extremely urgent and extremely important.

U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker -- who will be overseeing a federal court challenge to Prop 8 starting this Monday (January 11) -- is considering whether or not to open the court room to TV cameras.

The court just announced that it is seeking public comment on the proposal to televise the trial -- and that all comments must be submitted to the court by a Friday deadline.

The interest in this case is unprecedented. And not surprisingly, supporters of Prop 8 -- who eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry -- do NOT want the trial to be televised.

Opponents of Prop 8 -- led by attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson -- are seeking to televise the case in the interests of full transparency. They want this historic trial to be watched by as many Americans as possible. And, of course, we agree.]

Mary Daly, a Leader in Feminist Theology, Dies at 81
By MARGALIT FOX
Mary Daly, a prominent feminist theologian who made worldwide headlines a decade ago after she retired from Boston College rather than admit men to some of her classes, died on Sunday in Gardner, Mass. She was 81 and had lived for many years in Newton Centre, Mass.

A friend, Linda Barufaldi, confirmed the death, saying Professor Daly had been in declining health recently.

A self-described “radical lesbian feminist,” Professor Daly maintained a long, often uneasy relationship with Boston College, the Jesuit institution where she had taught theology since the 1960s.

In 1999, Professor Daly left the college after a male student threatened suit when he was denied a place in her class on feminist ethics. She had long limited enrollment in some advanced women’s studies classes to women only, maintaining that the presence of men there would inhibit frank discussion.

Professor Daly did let men enroll in her introductory feminism courses and offered to tutor them privately in the advanced subjects.

Among the first American women to train as a Roman Catholic theologian, Professor Daly challenged orthodoxies from the start. She came to wide attention in 1968 with the publication of “The Church and the Second Sex” (Harper & Row), in which she argued that the Catholic Church had systematically oppressed women for centuries.

Her next book, “Beyond God the Father: Toward a Philosophy of Women’s Liberation” (Beacon, 1973), explored misogyny in religion in general.

“She is a central figure in 20th-century feminism,” Robin Morgan, the feminist writer and former editor of Ms. magazine, said in a telephone interview on Monday.

Professor Daly’s work was the subject of a critical anthology, “Feminist Interpretations of Mary Daly” (Pennsylvania State University, 2000), edited by Sarah Lucia Hoagland and Marilyn Frye.

If Professor Daly’s ideology placed her outside mainstream academic and religious life, then that, by her own account, was where she was glad to be. Formerly a practicing Catholic, she came to regard organized religion as irreparably patriarchal, in later years calling herself “post-Christian.” Where her scholarly concerns had once been largely theological, she gradually came to regard them as spiritual in the broadest sense of the word.

Mary Daly was born in Schenectady, N.Y., on Oct. 16, 1928. By the time she was an adolescent, the natural world seemed to resonate for her in a way it did for few others.

“Especially important was a startling communication from a clover blossom one summer day when I was about 14,” she wrote in an essay in The New Yorker in 1996. “It said, with utmost simplicity, ‘I am.’ ”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in English and Latin from the College of Saint Rose in Albany in 1950, she earned a master’s in English from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in theology from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. She later earned two more doctorates, in philosophy and theology, from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Professor Daly joined the Boston College faculty in 1966. In 1969, in a widely reported case, she was denied tenure, a development interpreted by many as a response to “The Church and the Second Sex.” After more than 1,500 students signed a petition supporting her — most were men, for the college did not admit women to its liberal arts division until 1970 — she was reinstated with tenure.

In 1999, when Professor Daly and Boston College parted company, a spokesman for the college said she had agreed to retire. She maintained she was forced to retire.

Critics alternately praised and condemned Professor Daly for her pyrotechnic, bitingly witty, eccentrically capitalized and punctuated style.

Most were enchanted by “Websters’ First New Intergalactic Wickedary of the English Language” (Beacon, 1987; with Jane Caputi). A lexicon of new, nonsexist English, the book contains original coinages, like “Mister-ectomy” (“a guaranteed solution to The Contraception Problem”), plus familiar pejoratives like “crone” and “hag,” rehabilitated as emblems of pride.

But some reviewers seemed discomforted by Professor Daly’s later prose, which appeared to dovetail ever more snugly with New Age rhetoric:

“Although I was not in a ‘trance’ when writing ‘Gyn/Ecology,’ I was in a special mode of creative consciousness, which stemmed, in part, from a will to overcome all phallocratically imposed fears and Move on the Journey of Gynocentric Creation,” she wrote in the 1990 edition of “Gyn/Ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism” (Beacon), originally published in 1978.

Professor Daly leaves no immediate survivors.

Her other books include “Pure Lust: Elemental Feminist Philosophy” (Beacon, 1984) and “Outercourse: The Be-Dazzling Voyage: Containing Recollections From My Logbook of a Radical Feminist Philosopher (Be-ing an Account of My Time/Space Travels and Ideas — Then, Again, Now, and How)” (HarperSanFrancisco, 1992).

Reviewing “Pure Lust” in The New York Times Book Review in 1984, the religious-studies scholar Demaris Wehr wrote: “Mary Daly is an extraordinary woman and this is an extraordinary work, demanding unusual spiritual and intellectual effort from its readers. The effort is worth it.”

Ms. Wehr added, “Her powerful mind, her creative genius and her uncanny ability to put her finger on deep emotional, psychological and spiritual problems are ignored at our peril.”

Your description so perfectly illustrates the corporate state, the lack of value placed on employees (pay structure sounded horrible), and the fresh crop of punks who are in the hiring seats. You ought to write a story about your interview. This is what we have come to. Reading your entry made me imagine punching pimple-faced prick. Why the fuck does he have a job?

I have some friends who are 50 or older who have been literally pushed out of their jobs – any prospects? No. We are an ageist society, but do our discrimination laws protect the 40+ employee, as the ADEA supposedly contemplated? Hell no. SCOTUS decided, about six months ago, that a plaintiff in an age discrimination case must prove that his or her age is the “but for” cause of the adverse action (such as termination, failure to promote, etc). Because people are more sophisticated (only in rural Southern areas, as far as I know, are dumbass supervisors still stupid enough to tell racist jokes in earshot of African-American employees), they do not make comments to reveal their bias. How is anyone going to prove that age is the but for reason? Especially when in most cases the employer will assert economic reasons. The older employees adversely affected are usually on the high end of the pay scale, and the company chases out the older ones, tries to make them quit, and there we are.

In addition to the many other “fixer upper” bills we need, we need something to put teeth back into the ADEA, which will hardly be used now. And for you SCOTUS followers, I am talking about the abominable Gross v. FBL Financial Services, Inc., No. 08-441, decided 6-18-09, and, you guessed it, Thomas wrote the opinion. Naturally, Scalia, Roberts, and Alito joined his opinion. Kennedy swung the wrong way on this one and sealed the deal against employees in this case. The dissenting opinions are brilliant. Justice Stevens in particular is respectfully scathing in his opinion. I loved it!

Murphy,

I’m sorry about your sick sweetheart. I have been trying to catch up and saw sheila7’s suggestion. I think she is onto something. My daughter had a lingering illness last February and it also turned out to be pneumonia. I felt like such an idiot for waiting to get the chest x ray, but my kids had never been sick, not even ear infections to speak of, one or two stomach viruses lasting a day, that’s it. When she got sick, I just couldn’t believe she had anything serious.

Anyway, try the chest x ray if you haven’t already. Hope she gets better soon!

thanks for the obituary on Mary Daly. ((((Dances)))). It was Gyn/Ecology that made me open my eyes in a whole new way while I was in my twenties and Pure Lust that brought me out of my death slumber in my thirties. I will have to complete my collection of the books. I have only a few more to buy. Her very recent works are so uplifting – not rigorous as the others. She’s having fun with a future world that is post-patriarchal.

Professor Elizabeth Warren on the Rachel Maddow show of 1/6 gives a great interview about the bill on consumer protection that passed the House and now goes to the Senate. This might be the one piece of legislation that can actually help the little guy.

The part that pisses me off is that lobbyists are being paid to fight this bill with money received by the scumbags who brought us to the brink of the second great depression. The bankers and Wall Street punks who got bail out money are using that money to fight a bill that will help consumers.

The down side is that the bill creates another regulatory agency, which I know is not attractive to fiscal conservatives. Ironically, seven other regulatory agencies have used resources to avoid the very regulation that this bill would provide and that would have prevented the current crisis.

The Republican response is voiced by a Senator who compared the proposed agency to “another EPA” as if that is a bad thing.

We all know that government excess in agencies is a bad thing, but regulation is fundamentally useful with proven good results. The “no regulation” argument was also popular in the early part of the 20th century when it was okay to work kids practically to death in unsafe conditions.

Twenty percent of chemicals used in our products are secret, making it difficult to regulate. This story refers to a nurse who was diagnosed with chemical poisoning after treating a man who reeked of a still unknown chemical. The ingredients in the cocktail were not disclosed for trade secret reasons. So, the law says it is more important to protect a company’s investment than it is to avoid chemical poisoning. The nurse has continued to have respiratory problems.

Nope. I see it as you do. There’s an article saying she’s po’d because not much of what the House wanted in the bill is going to be there. :)
RemVem #58: I am really mad at Mrs Pelosi but seriously had not thought that something could be wrong with her
————————————
I’ve no inside info on Nancy. It’s just that the more I see her behavior, the more I’m convinced she must have a personality disorder which renders her inappropriate for the position she holds. Her Speakership thrilled me, but I soon came referring to her as Cruella de Pelosi. Lately I’ve been wondering how a person can be so ditsy and not realize it – or pretend not to realize it. But then there’s O as well.
—————————
I’ve seen no TV coverage of the drama playing out in MA – the thought that the upcoming election could threaten HC. So I put on my thinking cap and turned up the volume on my ears (reference to a darling kindergarten scene involving first grandchild)when the tease appeared to mention the topic. However, it was strictly about the Kennedy’s endorsing Martha today, or maybe it already happened. So you had to know the background to appreciate the story. I’m not commenting one way or another about that race, only to say I’m sorry to see hype entering it at this late date.

Details are fuzzy, but there was just a race in NY State where the guy campaigned on voting one way, then voted the other. Relative unknowns are unpredictable. Take Obama, for example.

Ok, now Fox News is covering the Whale Wars boat ramming by the Japanese whalers by calling it eco-terrorism and accusing the little boat of ramming the big whaling ship. That’s more corporate friendly and what I expected of Fox. The little boat was cut in half and sunk. All’s right in conservative world. Their guest did point out that the Japanese call their whaling research, even though they are cutting up and packaging the whale meat right on the deck of the ‘research’ ship. That’s a little more fair and balanced of Fox.

I’m glad the NYT finally got around to a post on Jan 7th about Mary Daly. I found a link for the segment NPR did on Monday about her. It’s much shorter, too short in fact, but it offers somewhat different details and perspectives…

“Feminist Theologian Mary Daly Remembered”
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122258110
by Barbara Bradley Hagerty

…such as explicitly saying Prof Daly didn’t allow the male student into her advanced class for the stated reason that he simply had not taken the prerequisite(s). She also noticed “I saw women that were repressed. When they’re in classes with young men, they shut up all the time. They’re laughed at if they have unusual ideas. They have to be sexy, then they can’t really think.”

And if you’re snowed in today, you might want to hear or read the more detailed, very moving NPR interview with Charles Pellegrino, about the experiences and accomplishments of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a remarkable man who died on Monday of cancer at age 93, and who had survived *both* nuclear bombs at Nagasaki and Hiroshima:

This is a very damaging obama website.

As far as the Massachusettes race is concern. I am 100% in support of scott brown. He wins and the obama agenda is over. Coakley is nothing more than a rubber stamp to the shame of a healthcare bill which is nothing more than a takeover of your and my life. It is the stepping stone to the obama legacy which will be bought and paid for on the backs of my son and daughter. Look we all need to start to understand something and if your against obama you cannot be supporting people who will simply go to washington, start walking around like zombies and passing every goddamn bill because obama the arse tells them to.
I hope and pray the scott brown is the next senator from massachusetts. You think a republican moving into the seat of kennedy and the vote to kill obamacare isnt going to ruin his presidency, well than i believe you are totally wrong.

I wanted to open up a question to everyone. Answer me this.

I retired on the 1st of December. During my past 20 years the Air Force has paid on my behalf into Unemployment Insurance for me. Now that i am no longer working i went and filed for benefits and this is what i was told.

You chose to stop working so you will only get a partial amount of unemployment insurance but had you been fired we would pay your the full amount.

Which leads me to question them. But wasnt payments made on my behalf?

Yes i am told but that is not how the system works.

So i said basically what your telling me is that i am paying into a system, the money is collected and i would have been better off to have went into my commanders office and punched him in the face and been discharged instead of retiring at 20years of military service.
The lady laughed and said well you wouldhave gotten your full entitlement.

Is it me or is there something wrong with this country when you paid for 20 years of your life and never asked for anything and the one time you go in like so many other people you are basically told sorry but thank for your contributions anyhow

She is begging now not a good sign…some polls have her way behind. Most of the crap is to get attention and stir it up but I think this is going to be to close to call.
I don’t know who threw a guy with the Kennedy name in the pot but I am sure it is to confuse people and the voters who are just not paying attention. The independents are bad news for Coakley.

Ben Nelson update, Jan 7:
Senator Ben Nelson, D-Neb., who has come under heavy criticism for his vote on health care reform, now seems to regret the whole thing ever happened. He’s down 31 points in the polls against potential challengers for his senate seat and has been in serious damage control mode. Today he requested an interview with Nebraska newspaper the Freemont Tribune where he said the following:

“I think it was a mistake to take health care on as opposed to continuing to spend the time on the economy,” he said. More at:

I’m not sure, but I think the claim for those that retire and are not fired is only reduced on the first payment, and normal for the rest?

You can always fight the claim and sometimes it works.

Not sure, but since you already have a bank of claim money, maybe you should get a job with the Baracko administration, or ACORN and make sure you are fired after telling them you are a PUMA!

Unemployment Insurance is a safety net in cases of termination. You chose to stop working, therefore you are not entitled. That’s the way it works for everyone who has payed in.

With snow piling up outside and the Vancouver Winter Olympics coming up in few weeks, I couldn’t resist cracking a comment after reading Victoria’s new miscellani.org blog article, with a great title and plenty of eye-poppers to go with it:

Three Poles to Ski in The Men’s Games

“Gender imbalance is written into the Olympic Charter. The rules and related decisions are made by and for men. Male privilege is really nothing special in the unsportsmanlike world of Olympic games. When was the last time you caught news of male players manning up to take a stand on principle, in either word or action, to end the bigotry against their female peers?”

She explains the recent Canadian Supreme Court rulings against female ski jumpers and other women in sports from boxing to kayaking:

“Though guilty as sin for blatant gender-based discrimination against female athletes, the IOC cannot be held in violation of s.15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms because no Canadian law, no other nation’s laws, can be applied to the Swiss-based organisation, to their Olympic Charter, or even to public activities and events in the city of Vancouver!”

Now the people of Vancouver are being shoved into so-called free speech zones where their protests won’t even be seen or heard. Sound familiar?

184

BigCatLover 01.07.10 at 12:33 pm

I never knew one could ‘retire’ and still receive unemployment. I’m puzzled about why you would receive anything, but I have no experience with it except for co workers who would come to work with the intention of getting fired so they could collect. Apparently, they were able to accomplish this. I did have a friend whose business was closed when the owner retired and my friend did collect some benefits, but she claimed it was too little and only lasted half as long as she was told it would. Dealing with bureaucracy is always a crap shot.

I understood the concept when I quit, stopped working b/c I decided to retire even though I was young enough and strong enough and had a job I did not have to leave……….I paid into the system and if the company I worked for laid me off(fired) or company moved over 50 miles away and I could not relocate I then WOULD receive unemployment insurance WHILE I looked for another job!

Kirkwood is a really nice area. I live about 15 minutes from there. It is very cold right now. By tomorrow wind chills are expected to be -25 or more and temperatures around zero or below. But, the roads are in pretty good shape after the snowstorm so he shouldn’t have problems with that. Just make sure he comes prepared for the weather. Kirkwood is in the middle of everything so it’s not an isolated area or anything. Close to everything.
Hopefully they have the shooter, still not confirmed, but the local news said they reopened the highways and the police were shaking hands and acting like it was over. Just waiting to confirm it.

You have some unemployment while you look for another job. You might also get a reduced rate because you have retirement income. Anyone that works a part time job, that income reduces the amount of unemployment amount, if you lost a full time job.
You paid into it, but I think you only can pull out of it for a couple of years, so collect while you look for another job, that’s what it’s for.

This isn’t a moral issue, you have credit, you look for a job, you get it.

This was an email sent to me today, so dont shoot the messenger please. But, you can look any of the info up and confirm the facts. By the way, just so you know, it took both sides to make it all happen, that’s the way it goes in dc.

Our Social Security

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,
No longer Voluntary
2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65%
3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,
No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,
Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees
would never be taxed as income.
Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month —
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put
away’ — you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the
general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, wit h Al Gore casting the
‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving
annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That’s right!
Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!
Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

223

#221 like i said, it took both parties to make any of this shit happen, but i havent heard any repubs lately talking about wanting to take social security away, i know bush suggested and maybe some others that it could be turned into private investment or some such thing. My thinking on the email or any of this is that the healthcare bill that will get passed, will just turn into another program that just grows and grows and we never fixed anything. At least the social security program worked for quite awhile and still does for most.
They all start out with good intentions, and then as the years go by they tend to ruin what started out to help people.

NikkisMom 01.07.10 at 2:35 pm

I’ll leave you with this: I have 0 read that as ZERO tolerance for child molestors, rapists and more importantly their defenders. ZERO. If you think it’s a-okay to assault & rape your toddler niece with a hot curling iron, you are dangerous, end of story. Coakley didn’t get that.

My response was to the one sentence in your email post and my perspective is that of an employee of one state pension system that has always offered a defined benefit plan with fixed retirement benefits based on years of service, age and salary. During the conservative years I watched as they stormed the pension systems and demanded that people in the system be allowed to ‘opt out’ of the defined benefit plan and open private investment pensions with their future pension contributions. Sounded good when the market was good, but was a disaster when the market crashed. And that is historically the case with the markets and politicians know it. But fees made by the investment people soared. That is the conservative way, IMO.

226

murphy 01.07.10 at 2:59 pm

I don’t think you can receive social security payments if you havent “paid in” to the system via paid work. legal citizens or not. At home mothers arent earning FICA credits and wont be eligible to get payments when they “retire”

227

admin 01.07.10 at 3:05 pm

I went to your post thru your link:

“My reaction to them?
I was at the point you reached two years ago. I was called a racist for it. By you, amongst others. You won’t be able to create any change until you own what you did. Admit your part in this, then change.”

Um, guess what? They are still calling you racist. Personally. Joseph Cannon posted one of their diabtribes to him and they called edge of forever out by name. Of course the NIMROD blamed you for being “racist” for posting a picture from *politico* on the underwear bomber. Those still on the Hopium have rotted their brains out completely.

#255 that is exactly accurate. Who knew that the economic system

Bernie Maddof is in prison, and still, there must be more to this. HUH

I seem to recall, the whole money emergency came in under bush.
Then, he had to call mccain and obama to come to dc

Seems to me, that was a pretty clear indication that things were being worked out. This is how we will leave, and this is
something that must be done for both of us before we go.

So, here we all are. Groping and thinking. Take a deep breath.

I would repeat that I would expect every Hillary Dem to support the Hillary Dem Martha Coakley. She is NOT a “rubber stamp” of Zerobama, but NICE TRY.

And I have thought more about that child rapist/torturer. He was convicted. If you are an AMERICAN you believe in INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY. Coakley could not prove that monster was a born predator and repeat offender and threat to society, so she could not throw him in jail before he was convicted. She had to wait till he was convicted. Look up the Constitution and laws and screw the vigilante shit.

Those who use this sensational story to circumvent the facts and appeal to slandering Coakely are guilty of TORTURE PORN. Plain and simple. Torture porn. Using the horrors that baby suffered to override the Constitution and the facts.

I expect that from the tabloid media, but we need to be vigilant against that.

So if you want to please Zero and Pelosi, vote against Martha. They HAVE to make nice with her now. But since the Trojan Ass was installed in the WH in order to ruin the Dem brand, voting against Martha is doubly pleasing to Zero.

But I’m glad you “got” it, BCL, and sorry to out you for your probing question. Yep. Martha was and is a thorn in Zero’s side and only in HP’s imagination does tarring Martha with torture porn in order to create a false horse race equal “full court press” in favor of the “ambitious” woman.

And I repeat: USING a child’s rape as torture porn to tar a woman candidate who was following the law is not “zero tolerance” of child rape. Our country is founded on innocent until proven guilty. You don’t get to jail people by prejudging them, regardless of what they’re charged with. He was convicted. Justice was done. You’re either for the AMERICAN way of innocent until proven guilty or you’re not.

She did not let a child rapist “go.” But I hate to see you ABUSED by the torture porn peddlers into being hoodwinked against a female candidate by this bullshit distraction campaign.

You either get it or you don’t. But…if you hate child rape you should hate even more those who would cynically use those details to arouse you past the American ideals of law, fairness and justice. The rapist was convicted. If you prefer lynching, I can’t support your abortion of American ideals.

Snow will never hurt us just For Being Female.

(Snow is just part of life on earth. Those of us who don’t like it can move to someplace warm, where the snow never appears to kill off any bugs or germs. Me, I’d rather have snow than have mosquitos and flies and fleas and wasps and… biting all year round.)

Dances and Zee, if it’s a trademark, then don’t use the copyright sign, use the “TM” symbol. The entity for that is (ampersand+trade+semi-colon).

one of coakley’s signature achievements as DA was to actually put teeth and seriousness into the sex crimes unit. Many victims and victims’ advocates groups consider her a hero.

she also took crap for “over-prosecuting” the Louise Woodward case, in which a 19-yr old nanny was convicted of smashing an infant’s head into the bathroom floor, killing him.

so, which is she? over-zealous or under-involved?

when cases become politicized it’s usually impossible to know what the “truth” is.

to answer your question it doesnt surprise me one bit that your supporting obama. DOnt like that statement but sorry as long as democrats control everything and there is no check and balances than obamas agenda and his legacy will grow. WE cant have it both ways. Look i know the majority on this board are democrats and dont mean to offend you but coakley is a rubber stamp for obama and a vote for her is simply a vote to push the obama agenda/legacy down the line. Dont like that sorry but that is the current state of affairs in this country. WE can all hope things will change 2010 etc but right now obama owns everyone one of us as the president and there isnt a damn thing we can do to stop his agenda. You can characterize me all you want zee but i assure you i have been through a lot of pain since obama took office. Call me a republican all you want but i am first and foremost and american. So to end say what you want zee but coakley will simply go to washington, bow to the messiah and vote for every single bill he proposes and in the end be a typical rubber stamp.

Unicorns for all…

On Health Care Bill, Nelson to Fight for All States
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat of Nebraska, has been under fire in recent days over his success in winning some plum provisions for his home state in exchange for his commitment to vote for the Democrats’ big health care legislation. But in a statement on Thursday, Mr. Nelson said he would fight for all states to get the same benefits as Nebraska — a move that some of his Senate colleagues had predicted as inevitable.

Stay at home Moms used to be the norm not that long ago. Don’t imply that those who stayed at home to raise the family are taking advantage of the system if they are divorced. Spousal benefit is half what the earner’s is, so no one is living in the lap of luxury from spousal benefits. And they lose those benefits if they remarry.

dont feel sorry to but in and i understand your problem. The problem we have is that washington doesnt answer to the people and it really doesnt matter what party your for. Did republicans screw things up with their 6 years under bush well yes on many front. But have the dems in congress screwed things up the last 3 years i would say yes. But what you need is both parties in some sort of power otherwise it is simply chaos. Strengthening Obamas hold on washington right now only supports obama, it does nothing for the people nor the parties. THis is all about obama. Do i want a party in power other than the democrats in charge of one of the chambers right now. You bet i do. It is the only thing that will stop obama and his agenda. Would healthcare have gotten where it is if republicans where in charge of one of the chambers. No because there would have been compromises and a more open discussion and not simply i am jamming this down your throats so that obama can come out at the state of the union and tell us how great he is and how fortunate we are to have him as our president. Remember obama knows better than you what is best for your families.

It’s based on age. A spouse can receive survivor benefits before they reach the age to receive spousal/beneficiary benefits which I think is 65, but I’m not an expert on social security. Your family situation is children’s benefits which are different than spousal benefits.

I can understand your view point, in the real world as a man, dealing in an ‘industry’ where men are the majority and the male/female issue is only a sideline of what goes on.

Most of us here are women that have missed out on most of the benifits you men take for granted because there is no glass ceiling for you.
Our perspective has been formed for many of us in the real work world for 4-7 decades of experience. Things are not equal for us, never have been and we are quite aware of how little power women have in the world. We wanted an experienced, intelligent woman, Hillary to help change that view in our country, but Obama, the DNC, Nancy, Reid and all the other thugs stole it from us. Yes, we are pissed. No, we haven’t forgotten.
Yes, we want more women in congress, because then they can start to make a difference for 52% of the population.

Our focus hasn’t changed, but it has defined itself. You are still welcome as our male PUMA, but please try to see it from our point of view.

306

DancesWithPumas 01.07.10 at 6:01 pm

As far as I understand it, and aside from Nobama and reclaiming the Democratic Party, this site has evolved into a pro-women site. When we have achieved the 33% (for some) 51% Solution of women in positions of power in government, then we might be in a position to quibble over rubber-stamping and policy nuances. Otherwise, my understanding is we will be voting for women who represent our interests… “our” being women and girls.

“Would it matter right now if every democrat in the senate was female?”

Hell, Yes. It would mean the nation had undergone a major revolutionary step. And that is exactly why such a thing {A}needs to happen, yet {B}won’t, so long as we have the patriarchal status quo.

That’s the piece you’re not grasping.

With women controlling the Senate, so many other things would be different both before & after such a change at the very foundation, that what you’re calling “obamas agenda” also would be moot or completely altered.

One woman alone can’t rock the foundation, but each woman after the next, building and working together, can do it.

Women have not done so yet because all possible obstacles have been put in the path to stop it.

Think for a moment, about your own obstacles, the ones inside your head, where you’ll support a destructive male, even sending him money. For what reason or purpose? You really think Scott Brown will give you different results? Are Bush and Obama so very different? Look past the pigmentation. And above all, look past the {D} and {R}. That’s me talkin of course– not a Dem, not a Repub., just an American with my own declaration of independence.

In 277 you said,
But what you need is both parties in some sort of power otherwise it is simply chaos.

We have “both” parties now but they’re really just 1 under the surface, and all we get from that duopoly is Chaos.

We need neither of them. We need multiple choices– strong independent parties that represent and work for us.

My friends, I would like to say something. You can take it as just my two cents or as food for thought.

What we have on our hands is two parties that would like nothing more than to keep the number of women in power down. What’s worse is, while the men in power stick together such that they will kill to elect a mediocre man over a superior woman. What’s doubly worse is they have consistently been able to dupe women in to helping them keep the number of women in power down. We could never do that with them.

A good case in point is Martha Coakley. I would bet what little is left of my 401k that she was threatened beyond belief to go along with the health care bill. I would bet what’s left of my 401k that they told her they would pork MILLIONS into helping her lose this race if she didn’t toe the line. And of course, she capitulated. She had to. Why do I think she had to? Well, because there are not enough women in the senate to make it possible to push back hard and scare the bejesus out of the men in charge. There is great power in numbers, there is no power in the few. So, please just think about this. If we help to remove women from office and replace them with men, are we helping ourselves in the long term or are we doing exactly what the patriarchy wants us to do–which is keep the number of women in power as low as possible. We are 50 percent of the population, plus more. We will NEVER be 50 percent of the senate if we continue to let us manipulate ourselves out of our own numbers.

Ok, I’m going home now.

Uppity- I agree, but sometimes I think about Donna Edwards. She is an AA women, whom I really like and she unseated an conservative AA Democrat in suburban DC (Maryland). She got lots of help from Emily’s List and the day after she got the Democratic nomination (basically assured her victory), she switched from being ‘neutral’ in the presidential election to supporting Obama. Lots of Emily List people (myself included) were really pissed. It made me rethink support for Emily’s List candidates, if they do not support other women!! What does the AA community have that the women’s movement can’t compete with? Will women ever put their gender first?? (I feel like I am back in the women’s reading group) PS would love to read Ms Daly in the group.

Congress Tinkers with Withholding Tax Tables for 2010

Unlike the middle class wage earners, who are going to see huge amounts taken out of their paychecks, unless they increase their exemptions on their W4 form, it’s an increase that most wouldn’t even notice–$10 or $20 in some cases. Here are some of the “highlights” of the new 2010 withholding tables:

Via Joshua Keating at Foreign Policy, Radio Free Europe’s Golnaz Esfandiari reports that Iranian state television has aired a documentary claiming that the death of Neda Soltan was an elaborate hoax concocted by British and American intelligence services.

The English-language version, I suspect, will soon be available on Alex Jones’s website. But until then:

The state-television documentary suggests the video of Neda’s dying moments merely depicted her pouring blood on her own face from a special bottle she was carrying. Later, the documentary alleges that 27-year-old Neda was shot dead in the car that was taking her to a hospital.

The conspiracy theory alleged in the documentary is in line with comments by Iranian officials, who have repeatedly described Neda’s death as “suspicious” and a “premeditated scenario” to defame Iran.

It seems that the doctor who came to Neda Soltan’s aid is rotting in an Iranian prison for his part in the “plot”:

Voting for women. I live in Missouri
Once again I find myself in the position of what to do. Robin Carnahan is running for US Senate she is a BO lover and will vote the way he tells her to vote. She will be with Polosi and Reid. She was against Hillary from the start just like Clair McCaskill. Roy Blunt a real ass, far right Republican is also running for the Senate seat. I can not vote for him. Again I find myself in the position of writing in a name and throwing away my vote or vote for Blunt just to stop NObama. Kit Bond a Republican who holds the seat now is retiring. OK Pumas give me your best opinion and advise! Do we vote for a women (Obama lover) or for an ass who is a far Right wing Republican? What is one to do????? Vote for an Obama lover who fought against Hillary or vote for a ass?

#251 HP True you didn’t task Martha with the specifics of the torture porn, but your claim of a “full court press” in light of these gratuitous attacks amounts to the same.

#216 “It will be a full court press for Coakley for the next 2 weeks.”

#243

So if you want to please Zero and Pelosi, vote against Martha. They HAVE to make nice with her now. But since the Trojan Ass was installed in the WH in order to ruin the Dem brand, voting against Martha is doubly pleasing to Zero.

But I’m glad you “got” it, BCL, and sorry to out you for your probing question. Yep. Martha was and is a thorn in Zero’s side and only in HP’s imagination does tarring Martha with torture porn in order to create a false horse race equal “full court press” in favor of the “ambitious” woman.

Try looking at it this way (although voting for a woman who was against HRC from the start is almost impossible), they are all walking in lock step with BO because he is on top and considered ‘popular’ with the voters now. When he starts to fall big time, they will get more independent big time and then, better a woman than a conservative male who you know you can’t stand. What do you think?

That is a difficult choice, especially when the female was an enemy to Hillary, yet…my choice would always fall to the woman that is closest to my beliefs.

The one person I voted for that was a Rep, was McCain, he is more of a centralist to me (so am I), so, also Hillary is his friend… and I held my nose that one time and voted for him. Also, Palin on the ticket helped the medicine go down.

I will never vote for an Asshole Republican male to stop Obama. Always a female, Dem over Repub female. If my choice is only between two men, I will vote out the person that is now in congress, mainly Dems over Repubs, just ’cause.

no contest.
Look, for me, all bets are off until we get a majority representation of / by women in government.
Women in govt in the current meager numbers will almost always walk lockstep with their male counterparts… it’s politics, it’s power and access to power. That dynamic changes when the gender balance shifts.
The point of power is always the present… so this is the best time to decide and work to shift the balance of power.

Nancy Pelosi almost has to fall out of the category of “woman”. She’s a ladder kicker. Getting rid of women pleases Nancy because she wants to be the only powerful woman in America. Believe me, Hillary scares the crap out of her. Ladder kickers want to make sure they are the only woman and competition rattles them. They are generally mediocre but very crafty. But keeping other women Out is an obsession with them. That’s why she endorsed Coakley’s primary opponent. It’s also why Gillibrand was not what she wanted. She would have far preferred Caroline, because Caroline his a comparative dim bulb. And naturally, Hillary is her nightmare.

As with all ladder kickers, they dig holes for other women to fall into. Then one day, the women she has wronged see the opening and when she is in trouble, they help to toss her into her own hole. Then they all go out to lunch together.

Nancy should be ashamed of herself.

It is impossible to gauge how individual women will govern in a legislature that is comprised of a feminine majority . Until we are allowed to analyze them empiracally ,in that specific context, we can’t possibly know the end result .

In other words … Put all women in then weed out the ones we don’t like .
With Women as the majority of the legislature , it is likely that the entire paradigm of our government’s interests will change . Will the same bills that are being debated today even come up for a vote or would they be focusing more on education , penalties for crimes against women and children , women’s rights , women’s health , etc. etc. ?
Who knows? No one – but I’d like to find out .

Tonight’s supposed to be even colder.

I’m not an advocate for “all view points”.
All view points amount to no view point.
My preference is exiled Democrat leftists who support women.

I don’t expect to see the 51% Solution in my lifetime.
My focus is on Skipper and her generation, that they arent discussing the same imbalance when Skipper is her mother’s age.

Aside from that, we’ve lost way too many original Pumas
because of the influx of Republican / right leaning faux pumas.

Within a wide girth of reason, Vote Women!

TexasTigress

Wife ‘proud’ of CIA bomber

The Turkish wife of the Jordanian suicide bomber who killed seven CIA agents in Afghanistan expressed pride on Thursday in what he had done.

“I am proud of my husband. He carried out a great operation in this war. I hope Allah will accept his martyrdom, if he has become a martyr,” Defne Bayrak told reporters in Istanbul, where she lives.

“I am not ashamed. He did this against the American occupation” of Afghanistan, she said, the Turkish news agency Anatolia reported.

Married Couples Pay More Than Unmarried Under Health Bill

WASHINGTON — Some married couples would pay thousands of dollars more for the same health insurance coverage as unmarried people living together, under the health insurance overhaul plan pending in Congress.

The built-in “marriage penalty” in both House and Senate healthcare bills has received scant attention. But for scores of low-income and middle-income couples, it could mean a hike of $2,000 or more in annual insurance premiums the moment they say “I do.”

The disparity comes about in part because subsidies for purchasing health insurance under the plan from congressional Democrats are pegged to federal poverty guidelines. That has the effect of limiting subsidies for married couples with a combined income, compared to if the individuals are single.

People who get their health insurance through an employer wouldn’t be affected. Only people that buy subsidized insurance through new exchanges set up by the legislation stand to be impacted. About 17 million people would receive such subsidies in 2016 under the House plan, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

The bills cap the annual amount people making less than 400% of the federal poverty level must pay for health insurance premiums, ranging from 1.5% of income for the poorest to 11% at the top end, under the House plan.

For an unmarried couple with income of $25,000 each, combined premiums would be capped at $3,076 per year, under the House bill. If the couple gets married, with a combined income of $50,000, their annual premium cap jumps to $5,160 — a “penalty” of $2,084. Those figures were included in a memo prepared by House Republican staff.

I don’t expect everyone to have the same point of view. I do expect everyone to be in the same volume if not on the same page though.

“As far as losing original pumas because of right leaning pumas-I don’t understand that. Why would one walk away from their own viewpoints and just turn things over to others. Why not stick it out, call people out when needed and get on with things.”

I have the same question.
Maybe people got tired of countering the same basic arguements which impeded progress. Maybe they got tired of explaining the importance of voting for women. Maybe they got tired of reading comments cheerleading palin as a savior of Everywoman. Maybe they drifted to other blogs that retain, more or less, the feel of the original spirit and focus of Puma.

I do know that there are some that felt they were moderate to conservative earlier on but now feel they are radical leftists in comparison to the latest / current manifestation of this blog.
Maybe they’ll stop by and let us know in their own words.

an unbalanced boat? absolutely. all the weight right now is on the Democrats’ side, and the boat is leaning over weighted down by all the tons of cash being thrown at them by corporations. So the solution is to rush over to the OTHER SIDE of the boat? What on god’s earth will that do, other than satisfy a very understandable, but ultimately futile, desire for REVENGE (which I share)? All it will do is put dickhead republicans in charge! nothing will change.

I say be strategic, for sure. Vote out incumbents, especially long-term incumbents. How about this:

Puma Rules for Voting
1. Always vote against the incumbent, regardless of party
2. Vote for the woman if she’s not an incumbent

Puma Rules for Voting with Murphy Variation
1. Vote FOR Women
2. Vote against the incumbent if there’s no woman in the race

I suppose it WOULD make a royal headache for the Party Poohbas if we were able to make even half of the previous “safe” districts unsafe by voting in people from the other party (an argument for voting FOR scott brown in MA, which i would do in a HEARTBEAT if Coakley were a guy). this goes both ways, you have to vote against Republican incumbents too, even tho the Dem running for the spot will probably be an obama supporter, one way or another.

we need to completely confuse and stun the party poobahs so that they have to actually start listening to what we voters want (or DON’T want, a la obamacare and bank bailouts). It is nothing less than stunning to me how blatantly our elected officials ignore us.

I think we need to see beyond personal distaste for obama to remember our political views and aims. No matter what, obama will be gone long before the two-party system in US politics is gone.

Good News in Nevada
Throw the bums out and elect women.

Democrat Harry Reid trails both Republican challengers Sue Lowden and Danny Tarkanian by 6 points, 43%-49%.
Even former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle leads Reid 47% to 43%. Obamacare will be Harry Reid’s undoing as the state of Nevada is more opposed to the government take over of healthcare than the national average.

Harry Reid cannot poll more than 43% against any one opponent, a tell tail bad sign for any incumbent. Yet, Reid manages a 49% disapproval rating. There is no where for Reid to go … but a one way ticket home to Nevada in 2010.

http://scaredmonkeys.com/2009/12/12/nevada-senate-race-election-2010-dem-harry-reid-trails-both-republican-challengers-lowden-tarkanian-43-49/

because unity is the singlemost difficult bond to create sheila7. Short of intensive, direct training (a la the military) or brainwashing (a la religious cults) the majority of people will NOT be able to maintain unity in the face of dissent, disagreement, insult, discouragement, disappointment, etc.

women are trained to never consider themselves part of the group “women” — groups we are allowed to be part of and be loyal to include:

1. wives
2. christians (or jews, or muslims, or whatever religion)
3. white people (or black people, or asians, hispanics, natives etc)
4. mothers (big one! and even in this group, which, like wives, is only open to women, we STILL dont identify as WOMEN but as a sub-group of the female variety, keeping out non-wives, non-mothers, and non-heteros)
5. democrats (or republicans)

but never ever ever as WOMEN. If women had the habit of freedom and the ability to identify as WOMEN first and foremost then it would seem ludicrous to object to the presence or thoughts of another woman because they are “too conservative” or “too liberal.” It would seem absurd to question the authenticity of a woman’s womanhood based on her political beliefs. It would be preposterous to feel unconnected to any other woman because of what she thinks or says.

We would all be in this together and we’d EXPECT all viewpoints to be present.

all of us here today should give ourselves a hundred pats on the back!

oh, I forgot Americans (or Norwegians, or Kenyans, or what have you). We’re allowed to identify as Americans.

sort of.

most of the hallmarks of the tribe “American” are pretty male: Money from shady, amoral practices; Violence, sometimes on a massive scale; Glorification of the Father Figures.

the ideals are universal though: freedom and liberty, the rights of the minority and of the individual. The ideals are even female in nature in a way. Probably why the jackasses in charge (of BOTH parties) are always trying to destroy our beautiful, woman-friendly Constitution.

Which reminds me, vote FOR women!

#400, well, dances you are in good company because neither does Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and most of the dems in congress.
For myself, I have yet to ever vote straight ticket because i can always listen to the other side just to make sure they dont have better ideas. But alas, we need a left and right leg to walk, two eyes to see etc etc etc.
It truly is a shame and almost sad to have a full dem congress majority and the white house, be a diehard dem and still be dissatified, and yet not
want to hear anything from any other side. Cause quite honestly it would feel like being truly lost in an abyss with no way out.
Many repubs and independents obviously went to the other side or Obama would not be sitting in the White House now. For all the power Pumas ignited, somebody didnt stay with Hillary on voting day to show their dissatisfaction of her treatmetn or he wouldnt be in the White HOuse. Had those 18 million voted the other way, it would have been a whole different ballgame. For whatever that would have been worth.

417

sheila7 01.08.10 at 12:52 pm

Murphy et. al,
I completely understand what you’re saying. But, sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t say what I’m thinking because maybe that point of view would not be welcomed on the blog. Not a view that I try to push on others, just my own opinion. I don’t think that gets a group very far. I think viewpoints should be heard. I also think it’s fine for Murphy or really anyone to say “Well, that’s not what we’re about here.” But, I do believe we should hear others out. (within reason).
For example, a question I have that I truly do need to answer for myself is…..
On the one hand I want to vote for any women that are available to vote for. For a variety of reasons. One to try to make the representation equal but also I believe that for the most part women do care more about others rights and will do a better job. I’m not saying there are no men who do so, just generally speaking.
However, this is what I come back to. I completely understand why African-Americans wanted to vote for BO as the first African-American president. But…how could they do this and not see him for what he is? So, what if there was a woman running who was equally as repugnant to me. How would I be any different? And, even though African-Americans wanted to even it up look where that got us.
Also, if you vote for any woman at all and she does a terrible job, (like BO does) that hurts the cause in the long run. No?

Sheila&
My viewpoint is that you weigh each ocntest and make your decision based on the factors in that race. If a woman is repugnant to you and the male candidate is reasonable to you, don’t beat yourself up if you vote for the male. But give the female a little heavier weight if you can, keeping the goals you’re trying to achieve in mind.

Only because when you have one or only a few of a class/gender/race, people tend to generalize/stereotype about the entire class / gender/ race based on that one or few examples. Whereas when you have greater participation / representation people are less likely to see one example as representative of an entire group.

sistermoon3,
In fact, they said tonight if you have your bare skin exposed for more than 10 minutes you could get frostbitten. Yikes! We have a winter warning after 6:00 tonight until tomorrow morning.

Makes me think of an alderwoman here. Now I can’t remember if she resigned or not. She peed in a bucket in the middle of city hall during a meeting. It was quite the “scandal”. LOL.

pumacraig,
Do you know if she resigned. It seems like she did. Then maybe ran for state rep? Do you remember this?

What was she protesting?

447

sheila7 01.08.10 at 1:35 pm

BCL,
I’m not sure anymore. I think there was some kind of vote or something and whatever it was she didn’t want to leave the room to go to the bathroom because she said they would do something without her. I can’t remember the details. She had friends come in with a bucket and they held up a sheet or cover and she peed. LOL.
Pumacraig probably remembers. I think this was her district that it happened in. I’ll have to see if she recalls the details. It was a while ago.

So, by those guidelines, we should also support Nikki Haley – (republican) running for governor of South Carolina. Isn’t she running against an all-male cast?

#444, ouch, my oldest son is with him, im sure Clint’s lady is keeping him informed of all this frozen tundra. Man, you just have to know the family history here to know the luck factor, good gosh.

Off to the dump. I’ll check in later. Hopefully HP has good news.

BCL,
Okay here it is.
In 2001, during a filibuster of Slay’s controversial redistricting of city wards, which broke up the northside’s largest voting ward and critically damaged African-American political power, then-Alderwoman Smith was not allowed to leave the floor to go to the bathroom.

After many hours and continued refusal from then-Aldermanic President Jim Shrewsbury to allow Smith a bathroom break, she squatted over a trash can as supporters held blankets up around her.

Agreed with Sheila7 – if we all agreed and this was an echo chamber, it would look like – well, obotland.

456

sheila7 01.08.10 at 1:51 pm

BCL,
Did you watch the video on the page. Now I remember it all. It all came back to me.

I believe they already had the election and she didn’t win. The incumbent won.
I don’t live in the city of St. Louis, I live in the county of St. Louis. It’s kind of a weird setup here. I’m not always up to date on the city but I’m pretty sure they had the election.

My preference is not for every one to agree… but I’d like to hear from those who are in the same chapter of the same book. Half the time some of the commenters here aren’t evenin the same library. Thank goodness Zee and TT, et al, are still around. There’s more than enough diversity on the left to have lively discussion. Introducing rightists into those discussions holds us back due to the retreaded arguments.

Sorry but it seems the right wingers are always using that analogy. Personally, I don’t expect everyone to agree on everything, but I’m not open to anything right leaners have to say… that is to say those that enabled the traditionally sexist, traditionally homophobic, traditionally racist, traditionally corporatist, traditionally war mongerers, traditionally fundamentalist christian republican party.

Anyway, this is Murphy’s blog and her latest comments render this conversation moot.

Palin Still Outside GOP Establishment, Poll Shows

(AP)Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin remains on the outskirts of the Republican establishment, a new poll of GOP insiders shows – though her decisions over where to appear this year suggest she may be interested in changing that.

In spite of the continued interest in Palin’s political future, the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate finished fifth in a National Journal poll that asked 109 party leaders, political professionals and pundits who is most likely to win the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. Palin tied with Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels for fifth place, while former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney came in first.

While Palin is attending a tea party convention next year, she is also planning to speak at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, along with mainstream Republican favorites like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

As Palin moves to expand her support among the party establishment, GOP leaders would be wise to tread lightly around her in spite of their skepticism, political blogger Nate Silver writes.

“There’s going to come a time, probably in July 2011 or so, where the knives are really drawn on Palin and Republican pundits, strategists and candidates start saying in public some of the things they’ve been thinking in private,” Silver says. “And that in all likelihood will play very well for her.”
