On the third night of her fever, Skipper’s temperature hit 103.4. I was a little worried — plied her with tylenol and motrin, asthma medicine, and a lukewarm bath. She falls asleep and talks in her dreams. I have no idea what’s going on inside that fevered head. Contemplating the state of the country and world these days kind of feels like being in the grip of a painful fever, no? Confusion, incoherence, a heightened sense of fear and the giddiness that goes along with knowing that something truly horrifying might happen. Or nothing at all.
This is not a Mommy Blog, but it is interesting to note that the degree to which the skills and responsibilities required for good mothering are valued at less than zero out in the “real world” (even though those skills include resilience, toughness, patience, authoritativeness, leadership, strategic planning, the ability to withstand and overcome extreme terror and heart crushing disappointment, and unusually strong mental health) is a very precise measure of the size and strength of patriarchy.
But I digress. Dragonfly has been active in the Woman Lynching Forum overnight. Deb55’s group Women Helping Women is a very local, very grassroots organization of women providing immediate aid and relief to women and their children in north east Florida and would be an EXCELLENT recipient of whatever holiday charity you were planning.
The New York Times says it’s still a man’s world, but turn Swannie’s Goddess Radio up FULL BLAST to tune it out this morning.

dont envy any mother dealing with a sick child, it’s an encompassing task that will not relent and the child is back to normal, it’s not just a tough job, it’s an emotional roller coaster, hoping all will be up hill from here out Murphy.

Mornin’ PUMAS – wow Murphy – did Skipper have the H1N1 flu??? Sure hope she’s feeling better…………….been lucky here so far – have only talked to two friends who wound up with that flu…………………..
I didn’t get a shot – haven’t since 2000? or sometime around then & have been either very lucky or just a healthy person which segues into this – Ben Nelson caved but reserves right to vote against bill – wonder what he got in form of payoff? If this piece of shit bill passes, I will refuse to participate – I will refuse to pay any taxes into it & I will institute with as many old people as I can a lawsuit wondering why – after paying into Medicare since it’s inception – I still have to pay a premium of 110.00 a month for services that I do not use….if this is supposed to be so gd wonderful why is there no coverage for vision, for dental, for more than one physical (you get one at the beginning – after that screw you). I am not on prescriptions of any kind but if I don’t pay a premium for that privilege (of taking drugs) now, I have to pay triple or guadruple the price if I ever do start taking them – although I have said to all of my sibs and friends – if anything happens to me – no lifesaving ever – I’ve seen the quality of life and that’s not for me – so let me die. There is nothing is Medicare that helps me at this point but regular insurance is so expensive that I am just in a quandry about what to do – if I buy one of the plans in place of Part B medicare (which is a joke incidently) then I will be paying about 200.00 a month for insurance which is not exactly cheap in order for me to have what? paid for days in the hospital?
I went to one of those meetings held by an insurance company – excuse me – HealthPartners – which calls inself something else besides a Medicare Advantage thingey – if you sign up with them you get the Freedom Plan with three levels of payment costs – whoopee –
I have to make a decision but like the fraud I am dithering becuz I jut don’t know what to do – tried to get answers from the Medicare site – they have a feedback section but when I clicked on it got thrown out of the system & this is another example of our great government in action – I want them out of my life – I don’t want Medicare – it mainly covers the catastrophic stuff & if I’m at that point I said, let me die so what to do, what to do………………………
Suggestions anyone??????????????? Join my pity party??? ;(

I usually don’t Like to advise but as it stands right now the best one out is AARP advantage. I know AARP pissed us off with this hc fiasco. But they do offer the beat coverage I had to research all because I am an agent and need to knownwhat is best when people expect the truth.

Hi PUMAS!
Murphy,
Couldn’t agree more with how the skills of motherhood are not valued. I figure if I can survive motherhood mentally and physically, I can do anything. Of course it’s yet to be seen if I’ll make it through. Have a 13 year old and life is getting very stressful.
But, really, hang in there. It’s so hard when you have a sick child. So worrisome. I’m sure she’ll be ok. She’s got you there to take care of her.

I don’t know who you heard that from but advantag is through Hartford insurance an a++ rated company. They pay claims very quickly. Even when I didn’t sell Hartford. I would tell people to call and compare coverages and price. If they chose the lowest pkg quite naturally coverages not as good. As with any insurance.

But all insurance sucks! ya need it, ya pay for it, if ya use it, ya lose it. If ya don’t lose it ya pay more and can’t afford it.
We are totally screwed!
Susie1945 12.19.09 at 12:24 pm
Thanks prpl – but AARP is off my radar – I have hated against them since hey started sending me retirement shit before I had even reached age 50 – fuck ‘em – they’re so far up the fraud’s ass that I’m surprised they’re still breathing – beside which they used to claim they were for seniors, run by seniors, etc, etc, etc but their leader is some punk in his 40’s & we old people all know how the younger people in this country feel about older people – let ‘em die cuz they are useless bitter uneducated, know-nothings who are taking up their space……….
Does that make me sound like a bitter, uneducated, illiterate, take up space useless old lady???? Ask me if I care………..
Those congresscritters think that we are gonna forget what they’ve done – not gonna happen – my brain may be full but I am selective about what I forget & this will not be forgotten just like the shit they pulled on 5/31/08 – another day that will live in infamy – bastards …………….
I’m with you HP – my voting for women will be very selective also – just heard on the news about the assholes that went to NATO conference in Scotland on our dime – spent lots of dimes too & Carolyn McCarthy?? from NY went to a spa instead of the meetings cuz she had a bad back………….WTF???? & we paid for this and our military has to act as valets & chauffeurs for these assholes – when did that start???????????? & it needs to stop – they can carry their own damm bags and get their own fuckin’ rental cars – do they think they are royalty or something????
Vote all the bums out including the women who are being assholes too…………………..
sistermoon3 12.19.09 at 12:26 pm
i dont hardly think you can blame repubs from this whole damned hc thing. nothin they wanted is in the bill, you cant buy insurance across state lines, you will see NOTHING done on TORT reform, you will not see health savings plans, an many other things and you will not see one DAMNED thing done about FRAUD in medicaid and medicare, these things have broken the system.
PERIOD. It’s all about the money, if we are gonna want to be like canada then let’s have their drug prices, but no, we will continue to pay outrageous amounts to the pharmas, that was a done deal months ago if you remember. This is gonna be forever folks, not just a little while. No matter what state you live in, you will be funding other states like California who has bankrupted themselves, get a clue.
Susie1945 12.19.09 at 12:27 pm

Okay, I’m not confused, feverish, giddy or incoherent today. Just really, really p.o.’ed. What happened to the balance of powers among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our government firmly, unequivocally established by the U.S. Constitution? Since when does that Constitution say anywhere that Congress should just roll over, play stupid and go ahead and pass a piece of crap bill that NOBODY among the people who elected their sorry asses wants, just because the current POTUS says ‘I must have this bill passed, or else’?
What’s next, POTUS telling the Supreme Court how every single case federal MUST BE decided just because he says so? Since when does the Constitution say that the office of POTUS is a dictatorship?
Every major poll, EVERY MAJOR POLL, says the American people DO NOT WANT this bogus hc bill, which so obviously will benefit nobody except a handful of giant health insurers and pharmaceuticals. Yet this bill will be paid for on the backs of each and every working American citizen. Despite virtually everybody in America shouting — THIS IS A BAD BILL; SCRAP IT AND START OVER — Reid continues to ramrod it through. If the Senate passes this bill this week, they deserve whatever fallout they get.
I’m ready to go to the Senators’ offices and scream. How about you?
Gotta go. BBL.

I was lying awake last night with my female German Shepherd lying next to me and I started to recall my last dog that I had to put down due to disease…that was 4 years ago. My heart still aches for him. I got up and read the story below again. It is good to cry.
grab some tissues…. and read this
The Story of Little Orange Boy
The little orange boy stopped. Behind him, kitties were playing, chasing each other and wrestling in the warm sunshine. It looked like so much run, but in front of him, through the clear stillness of the pond’s water, he could see his mommy.
And she was crying.
He pawed at the water, trying to get at her, and when that didn’t work, he jumped into the shallow water, All that got him was wet and Mommy’s image danced away in the ripples. “Mommy!” he cried.
“Is something wrong?”
The little orange boy turned around. A lady was standing at the edge of the pond, her eyes sad but filled with love. The little orange boy sighed and walked out of the water.

(((simofish))) – and that was a wonderful hug you sent – thank you – hugs to Fishy too – treasure every moment you have together.
I should really leave the blog for awhile so that you can all continue being tee’d off about the health care Bill. I would normally be there screaming with you – just cannot summon the wherewithall right now and also have not heard too many leaks about what is currently in the Bill. But you can be sure that we are under the bus as someone said above, if Nelson is on board. I am fit to be tied that they will pass this thing against the wishes of most of the American people. One problem is that those of us against it are opposed for different reasons. I’ll save my rants until I know more. Are they still discussing it in the Senate? – C-span wasn’t covering the Senate a while ago.
Bye again for now.

Anyone heard if Skipper is doing better?

Long:
Abortion Compromise Draws Fire From Both Sides
The National Organization for Women also issued a statement strongly opposing the language. And in a second statement, more heated and personal, Terry O’Neill, president of NOW, said she was outraged that the Senate Democratic leadership “would cave in to Senator Ben Nelson.”
“Right-wing ideologues like Nelson and the Catholic Bishops may not understand this, but abortion is health care,” Ms. O’Neill said. “And health care reform is not true reform if it denies women coverage for the full range of reproductive health services.”
If this language stays in the bill as is, she said, she would call on senators “who consider themselves friends of women’s rights” to vote against “this cruelly over-compromised legislation.”
But two of the Senate’s champions of abortion rights, Senators Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, and Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington, issued a joint statement saying they were satisfied with the agreement.
“We said all along that we wanted to ensure there was a firewall between private and public funds — this compromise achieves that,” they said. “We said we would not accept language that prohibited a woman from using her own private funds for her legal reproductive health care – this compromise meets that test.”
But the assurances of Ms. Boxer and Ms. Murray were not enough for some abortion-rights supporters.
Kelli Conlin, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health, issued a statement saying:
“While we recognize the efforts of our pro-choice women senators to combat the onerous conditions upon which Stupak and Nelson have insisted, we are frankly horrified by the shameful process that has allowed two men to hold American women hostage.”

Vote the pricks and teh women with pricks in their heads, OUT!

OMG!!
RememberNovember 12.19.09 at 9:41 pm
Dances – thanks for the catchup on women’s health care issues – un********believable. Some of these Senators are making 2010 decisions a lot easier. I am surprised at Barbara Boxer. As HP says “vote the bums out” – all of them.
Dances – do you know if Skipper is any better? Please let us know if you hear how she is and give Murphy our hugs – I am sure she is too preoccupied to check the blog.

Was just outside we have at least a foot and a half of snow and its still snowing and blowing.
Now I have no snow boots, only heels, so my sister’s dog Jack, a shitsu takes off down the street not plowed yet and its over his head and he is jumping like a rabbit so funny and we are chasing him and my sister falls on her ass and I try to lift her up and I fall so we are laying in the street in the snow laughing and Jack is barking at us and he is covered in snow, he looked so cute in his leather coat and it is snowing hard, so we make snow angels right there in the street and we are reminded of little girls who once had not a care in the world.
So maybe the snow is a way of saying slow down and take some time to be a little girl again. Tomorrow is another day the shoveling can wait and so can everything else.
Snow angels with my sister unexpected Joy.

Dear (((Caspie))) – that is SO beautiful – thank you for sharing it – I’ve been meaning to get Susan Boyle’s CD for a couple of weeks now. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Hugs to you and all your furry friends.
I keep popping in to see how Skipper is ……
Deb55 12.19.09 at 11:46 pm
Just made it to the blog and had to regroup… more tears.
RememberNov..
So SORRY to hear about your Dog! I am sure your heart is broken, and words can not help. Just know that your sorrow is shared here, as well as tears. I am sure she had a most Wonderful and Full life, but will be missed each an every day.
Where are you in Michigan??
Spent 5 years in Sault Ste. Marie on Kincheloe AFB, in the 70’s with ex. Beautiful country, but COLD~~~for this Florida girl.
First time I had ever seen snow! Great for a visit, But HARD to live in everyday. Shovel your way out of the house, shovel the car out, and rule #1.. don’t forget to PLUG the car in at night.
The only major benefit was we never had to buy ice. Just shovel the tub full of snow and fill it with beer..party on. LOL
Deb55 12.20.09 at 12:37 am
Murphy…
First, I hope that your daughter is doing MUCH better by now! Hopefully her fever has broke, and you both can get some real rest.
I am sure you are doing Gatorade, but may I make a suggestion. Something I learned from a Ped. years back. “Jello water” Take reg Jello.. mix with hot water to dissolve..cool..and have her drink it. It is loaded with gelatin (protein) and sugar (glucose), and easy to keep down. This will help keep her from dehydrating, as well as keep her strength up. Guess that’s why you get jello with every meal in the hospital.
(Had one allergic to milk, as a baby, this keep us out of the hospital..many times.)
Now let me THANK YOU for…
“Deb55’s group Women Helping Women is a very local, very grassroots organization of women providing immediate aid and relief to women and their children in north east Florida and would be an EXCELLENT recipient of whatever holiday charity you were planning.”
This brought me to tears, and made me so Proud to be part of a group of women that would recognize what we work so hard to do.
After the last 2 days I have had, it made all the hardwork and tears worth it. Just to know others see value in supporting women and children that are hurting so much.
We are all blessed here in so many ways, even though things are sometimes hard. Believe me, I am learning it more each and everyday.
Today was one of the hardest yet for me, and then to read your post, I can not express in words what it meant, you have no idea.
Just know it means that much!
Back shortly….need a few.
Zee 12.20.09 at 2:07 am
“I will not even vote for Dem women…none, nada, zilch!!”
Oh, really? Does that include Murphy when she runs?
Yeah, we know how well cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face works.
Meanwhile, those of us really dedicated to making the Dem party pay are sending a thorn to stick in Fraudbama’s side. Martha Coakley will kick arse down in DC…starting with your homophobic Republican male candidate up here in MA. Oh, but he was cute in that Cosmopolitan centerfold. A little less cute when calling out highschoolers by name, but you go right ahead. Homophobic Republican men are not a “backlash” by ANY stretch of the imagination, but you’re so cute when you’re mad, too…and the rest of us will TAKE BACK our party, woman by woman, anyway.
Zee 12.20.09 at 2:14 am
oh, no, ((((((RemNOv)))))). So sorry for the loss of your dear canine companion. :/
And ((((murphy and skipper)))) I hope I’m assuming correctly that Skipper is already on the mend…
goofsmom 12.20.09 at 2:17 am
Hi ya Zee and all pumas still online…
I was just poking my nose in the room to see if we had any (((Skipper))) updates…
Zee 12.20.09 at 2:25 am
I hope all the east coast PUMAs are snug and safe in the storm. Love FL Barbara’s post!! The snow brought me a few extra days with my son, and held off long enough for me to celebrate with old friends who are moving, so I’m begrudgingly liking this one, even tho we got enough snow and ice last year to last me the rest of my life.
Dances….words fail. Women supporting the throwing of women’s reproductive rights under the bus? Thank heavens for the president of NOW…but where is her voice amplified? Check out TGW for more on this.
States will be able to cut off even more coverage.

Dances….Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs.
Zee 12.20.09 at 2:30 am
Hey, Goofs! I hope I’m correct in thinking Murphy’s tone indicated the worst had passed…!

Happy Penultimate Solstice Eve. 3rd longest night of the year tonight..
goofsmom 12.20.09 at 2:46 am
Hey (((invalidresponse)))
Zee, I don’t know how to read it.
normapapuma 12.20.09 at 8:26 am
Just got around to doing the Schumer is a jackass prowl-Felt good! Better late than never.
HC bill is unfair, unfair, unfair, and unConstitutional. States can opt out of using Federal funds for abaortion services? So are taxes lower in those States? I don’t get how Nelson/Nebraska is getting anything…States are supposed to be treated equally. Therefore, all these reported DEALS for votes are not fair.
Enough already. As soon as I get time I’m changing my registration to independent too. But I wish Murphy luck with them Dems! I’m sure clintondemocrat is out there still. Maybe she could help.
murphy 12.20.09 at 8:46 am
HP– “I will name it obie anf gleefully shove it in the oven!!!”
Classic!
(ps thank you for all your loving comments. Skipper read the thread last night and she was beside herself with giggles. She feels FAMOUS!)
murphy 12.20.09 at 8:48 am

wow, a letter sent to Senator Ben Nelson from an actual doctor in Nebraska. A female doctor i might add.:)
NikkisMom 12.20.09 at 9:37 am
Murphy, so glad to hear that Skipper is doing better.
RememberNov – I’d rather comfort a PUMA right now than pay attention to the HC bill shit. It’s a done deal – we never had a chance of influencing any vote. Not even Howard Dean can stop that train now.
Our time is better spent now taking care of our own. Have a good day – give yourself some time. I wish I had the ability to take care of 100 dogs, but I’m not sure my psyche could handle it!
murphy 12.20.09 at 10:24 am
ho ho holy smokes posted,
take it upstairs!

(((Deb55))))
Thank you for your kind words – I am so touched by your empathy – yes, she did have a wonderful and happy life and she will be missed forever.
No longer in MI, but was in the middle of the State late seventies/early eighties. Became accustomed to the winter weather, breaking my car key in a frozen lock late at night, buying some daffodils for encouragement that spring was on its way and getting home to find that the flowers had frozen on the front seat of my car ….. the snow was lovely at first but California sun beckoned me home… and so snow is a rarity and my dog saw it for the first time last week.
Congratulations on the wonderful work you are doing for Women helping Women – perfect name, great concept.
(((Zee)))
Thank you – hugs to you and your Doxie
(((Nikkismom)))
Thank you and your words have been a huge comfort – just knowing that there are wonderful Pumas out there who care so much has touched my heart.
