Today’s PROWL comes via FLBarbara at Free Us Now:

Copy and Paste this letter into your email and send it to the following: foundation@mattel.com, prowl@pumapac.org, info@team-csd.com, twebster@savechildren.org, nfo@sothebysinstitute.com, info.ny@sothebysinstitute.com,

Dear Mattel,

As an American woman and a member of Puma PAC, People United Means Action, I have a couple of questions about your marvelous new Slave Barbie Collector’s Item:

  • Does she come with stones?
  • Does her head come off?
  • Does she come with a tiny vial of acid?
  • Does she need to be accompanied by a man in order to leave the store?
  • Who gets flogged if she takes her Burqa off in public? Doll? Or child?
  • Who arranges Burqa Barbie’s marriage?
  • If Burqa Barbie is “honor killed” do I get a refund?

The Burkha Slave Barbie is an outrage. My family, friends, and I will be boycotting ALL of Mattel’s products this holiday season, including, of course, Barbie, but also Hot Wheels, Fisher Price, and American Girl. We will DEFINITELY NOT BE BUYING any toys from Mattel for girls ever again after this outrageous insult to women and girls and to the women who fight for women’s freedom and rights worldwide.

Sincerely,

Your Name
Puma PAC Member
www.pumapac.org

The picture at the top of this thread breaks my heart in more ways than I can say. To think of that girl in terms of this despicable decision by Mattel and Sotheby’s is too much. Do the PROWL. Tell your friends. Thanks to FLBarbara and BJ Kling.

And, have you contacted your Senators today? They get LONELY when the y don’t hear from you. Tell them Hell NO! on the Great Insurance Co. Giveaway of 2009!

And this just in: Sexist Jokes Lead to Actual Sexism. What a surprise! Not.

well, only 38% of americans want this healthcare bill, wonder whoo the hell their math teachers were?

My granddaughter will never again receive a matel toy, sad isnt it. But she’s not a big doll lover anyway, this is one of the most ridiculously unbelievably slap in women of the middle east’s faces i have ever seen anyone do, even they know the burqa is a symbol of their nonworth.
Meanwhile, here’s a list of things i like about Obama and his administration
1. on the economy, nothing
2. on healthcare, nothing
3. on national security, nothing
4. on education, nothing
5. on taxes and spending, NOTHING

All prowls done.

I may as well send empty email and snail mail to the assholes in blue Massachusetts..they are not listening.
It will feel good to vote against them.
The ones running now (in Ma for Kennedy seat)are not going to vote on HC, they are not in office so they are moot.
We need a lot more people running for office as independents and women who will get my support. I will work FOR and support women. Men are up shits creek! They do have a cute boy running, the big guys will love him in Washington. A Republican boy toy! Ya some sexist stuff for the boys. Has anyone noticed his cute butt out there when he takes his daily run. I will get to use him for a vote AGAINST the Obots.

(((Murphy)))
(((PUMAs)))

Prowl sent again.

One important thing I want to say about why this doll has me so crazed is we are not only sending a dangerous message to girls we are sending a very dangerous message to the boys who will grow up to be the men believing the suppression of women is acceptable.
We are sending the men who abuse women as slaves as message. This is acceptable.

If we are to change how women are viewed in society. We must include the awareness that ALL women no matter where she lives deserves to live Freely and Safely.

My Thanks for responding to what is my crusade.

Prowl done. Thank you FLBarbara. Sarah Palin is at Fort Bragg:
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — Hundreds of people are lined up at an Army base in North Carolina where former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is signing books.

Palin arrived a little after 11 a.m. Monday, waved and went inside the store where she quickly started signing copies of her new memoir. She did not make any statement.

An Army spokesmen says Palin will not make a speech, pose for photos, or personalize notes in the books she signs at the on-post store. Officials estimated as many as 1,500 waited for her arrival. About a dozen people camped out.

The Army had worried the appearance would prompt political grandstanding against President Obama. That fear initially led commanders to limit news coverage, though the restrictions were later dropped.

http://www.wtvr.com/health/sns-ap-us-palin-fort-bragg,0,4731370.story

Site where I originally found this story says GRETA VAN SUSTEREN is with Sarah.

We need to educate the men and get them to speak out for women. If you have men in your life that look up to you for whatever reason – speak to them reasonably about how women are treated as second class citizens in a lot of arenas. A lot of them don’t realise this and when you give them instances and not make it into a man bashing, they will be less threatened by women and more open to it.
I had a before sleep conversation with my other half and he was telling me all about middle eastern women being physically and mentally extinguished and how sad it is. I told him it is what Puma talks about all the time so it is nothing new to us.

Crap and it will rain all week in NY.
Waiting for police now.
Thanks Obots, so beware they are not only crazy they are violent.

The Mattel Burqua Barbie is just another case of how in the big picture, that something like the Burqua has become common place as “traditional” garb in some countries. The more it is seen, accepted and used, the more it will become mainstream. Women who see the Burqua as a badge of honor for religion or to please their men in a twisted way will never willingly give it up. The only way is for countries to outlaw it and make it unacceptable to be seen in public in this type of garment. Never mind the Islamic countries, we should do it in good old America, our own back yard. How do we do this when Obama is very cozy with Islam and there are too many bleeding hearts who are cutting edge politically correct who would like to argue freedom for everyone.
We need to start in our own back yards…. I am sure there are more of them than we are aware of. I know where I can hang out and see a burqua clad woman in San Diego.

FLB,
Make sure you ask the police to patrol your area. If they know where you live bad things can happen. Take it from one who knows. Please be careful.
go back and review our thread on self defense. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Carry a camera and a cell phone at all times. Hide some good “weapons” in your car, a bat, a metal pipe, anything you can use that is legal, and will hurt.

We talked abut whether or not someone would damage the car. MORONS. You are allowed to express your opinion. Obama’s camp really opened my eyes this election season about how they treat those who don’t agree.

Another note–did the prowl. Thank you so much for staying on top pf these things. I don’t always get to this site, but the prowls in my email box are phenomenal. Again, thank you for what you do for women.

I have an idea. Orchestrate a visit to the congress. everyone, male and female, wear a burqa. Let congress look into the stands and see nothing but eyes and black shapes looking back at them. Stay silent. Do it for days on end.
That will creep them out. :)

We forgot to mention the serious danger of terrorist hiding in Burquas. It is like having the KKK in white sheets walking around all the time in kkk garb.
We must pass laws, Homeland Security should enforce a complete ban on burquas!!
If I have to remove my shoes and coat and jacket to board a plane then the burqua brigade is a definite security risk EVERYWHERE!!!! Un acceptable.

I would love to see it. Take part if there is way anyway I could too.

Big diffrence HP. When the klan runs around in their bedsheets we KNOW its the klan. If they were to start wearing burqas we wouldn’t know would we?
The burqa allows ANYONE to conceal themselves. Thats why so many crimes are committed on Halloween. Only day you can run around in a costume.

Burquas and Terrorism
Email from Iraq I just received.

” I finally decide to return home. As with every drive, there are tens of check points where the soldiers are holding a machine to check if the car has a bomb or not. You are also not supposed to use your cell phone when passing the check point-a rule that I forgot and was quickly reminded of by the inspecting soldiers. They asked me to get out of the car and go to the women’s check point to be checked. I walked calmly to one room by the side road where there is a woman sitting inside, waiting to body search women sent by the soldiers outside. I try to start a light-hearted conversation: “Why bother to search women; it is the men in this country who are causing all the trouble.” I say this with a light tone, only to be surprised and informed of another reality of Iraqi women: “No sister,” she tells me with a sad face. “Many women are suicide bombers these days. Just the other day, two women exploded themselves in front of the mosque, on two separate occasions. I still don’t know what to make out of these women,” she says. I don’t either. I leave the check point with a teary eye at the pain of the country and what it is witnessing from its men and women. Another sandstorm makes its way through the city one more time. I can see it in the distance, taking over the green that once surrounded the city, trees and flowers. Another kind of sandstorm seems to be overtaking the pained hearts of Iraqi women, blocking out the sun over the entire country. I better go inside-maybe tomorrow will be a better day. Maybe women will once again have the strength to keep themselves, their families and their nation going. They are in need of a new reality. The world must support them. We must stand strong with our Iraqi sisters.”

Robin Carnahan and Lacy Clay seen meeting in CWE
Recently-declared candidate for Senate Robin Carnahan and St Louis Congressman Lacy Clay were seen (and by “were seen,” I mean “I saw them”) in an early-morning breakfast meeting in the Central West End today. With them was a female staffer of no clear affiliation. It can reasonably be assumed that the meeting in part addressed the two politicians’ 2010 plans. The three left together, Carnahan, then the staffer, and then Clay.
Will one make a statement about the other shortly? Maybe. Some have suggestesd that Clay might also have designs on the seat to be vacated by Kit Bond. Carnahan may be trying to knock down some hurdles before her most daunting primary competition can set them up.
Will the Carnahan family dynasty be able to muscle the Clay family dynasty into stepping aside?
Stay tuned.

The email from Zainab is the stark reality of why Books not Burqua’s are the answer.
Studies show that the more educated a woman is the less likely she will part take in the violence of her Religion, culture, government.

Women of Islam believe they are commanded by Muhammed to be obey the man.If they do not obey they are punished and when they die they spend eternity in hell.

What choice does she have but to obey the command of Jihad?
Men are making war but
It is the educated women who offer the making of Peace.

She, as in I, you, her has the power to change the world.
Do not ever doubt that.

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate the opportunity to respond.

In this case, Italian artist and designer Eliana Lorena used Barbie as a model to showcase her interpretation of cultural dress from around the world. Barbie was literally her canvas and the outfits were the artist’s personal expression. This was one of the 500 different Barbie dolls representing 500 different cultures that were auctioned at a charity event. Barbie has no religious affiliation and we have no plans to make commercial editions of the dolls. These dolls are not available for sale.

this is what I wrote back. Feel free to copy/edit and paste it in your own replies:

That is a most unconvincing and weasely response. Regardless of the commercial implications to your company, the decision to support an inherently misogynistic doll is inexcusable. That your company won’t be earning money from its misogyny is hardly a rousing recommendation of Mattel’s corporate ethics standards.

Until your company publicly denounces the Woman As Slave doll and ceases production of this “Collector’s Item,” women worldwide will continue to be outraged and will continue to boycott ALL of your brands.

They has plans..Until now.

‘Barbie is being used with your company’s consent, indeed encouragement. The fact that your company is not marketing the dolls commercially is irrelevant. Case Number: 1749641, how lovely. Are the previous 1747640 cases also examples of times you have allowed Barbie to be used to subjugate and abuse women, or are some of those 17479640 cases when your other toys are used to ensure that the women of the world are raped, murdered and kept enslaved? You are consumer affairs professionals, could you at least have had a committee craft a response that sounds like you give a damn.

“Barbie was literally her canvas an the outfits were the artist’s personal expression.” I anxiously await the Thai sex slave Barbie and the African AIDS victim Barbie. What crap.”

Honora LOL

What kills me is “Barbie has no religious affiliation”

Well it is obvious barbie must have snuck out the Mattel factory and converted to Islam, which is a religion and a religion that requires women like Barbie to wear the Burqua that Barbie is fashionably wearing.

Are you kiddng me with NO religious affiliation? She is wearing an Islamic Burqua no one but Islamic women wear them.

Barbie is now an oppressed Muslim woman like it or not Mattel.

Found this dated 2008.

Iran Calls Barbie Doll, Western Toys ‘Destructive’ to Their Culture –

Najafabadi said Iran is the world’s third biggest importer of toys and warned that smuggled imports pose a threat to the “identity” of the new generation. “Undoubtedly, the personality and identity of the new generation and our children, as a result of unrestricted importation of toys, has been put at risk and caused irreparable damages,” he said.
Mattel Inc., the maker of Barbie, had no immediate comment Monday on the Iranian action. Barbie is sold wearing swimsuits and miniskirts in a society where women must wear head scarves in public and men and women are not allowed to swim together.

This is off topic of what you are discussing but I was so stunned when I watched this video. I copied this off of Michelle Malkin’s site and the video is truly shocking. The NEA is not about education but about power:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-piPkgAUo0w&feature=player_embedded

Here’s another example to add to the Big Labor Bully file — straight outta Chicago:
We watched an interesting YouTube video the other day. It was brought to our attention by state Sen. James Meeks, the Chicago Democrat who is also pastor of Salem Baptist Church on the South Side. We think our readers should check out the video. It’ll open your eyes.
Meeks, who chairs the Illinois Senate Education Committee, has been in a war with the Chicago Teachers Union since he had some tough things to say about public education in a Tribune essay and in a speech at Rainbow Push.
The CTU responded with a vow not to give him another dime in campaign money until he apologized. Meeks promptly wrote a check for $4,000, giving back every dime the union had already given him.
No apology.

Now, watch the video of the National Education Association’s retiring top lawyer, Bob Chanin, speaking at the NEA’s annual meeting in July, that Meeks recommended to the Tribune:

The contributions of “islam” for the most part came from apostates.

“The reason the Golden Age in the Islamic world became possible was because the rulers in those days were more secular than religious and they tolerated the apostasy of the great minds who in turn contributed to science. ”

Everytime someone brings up ANYTHING good about islam send them to that site. It is run by muslim apostates (people who have left the religion).

We must get the word out.

VIPs hunger for invite to first Obama state dinner
He and the first lady will honor Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister — in a big way, and in their way. In a departure from the most traditional venue, the elegant, high-ceilinged State Dining Room, the Obamas instead will gather with a few hundred VIPs in a huge, heated tent on the South Lawn.

It reminds me of images from the Irish famine, the holocaust, the slave lynchings, etc. This behavior is outside of my understanding and my tolerance.

Hello Fellow Pumas. I did the prowl and got this response from Mattel:

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate the opportunity to respond.

In this case, Italian artist and designer Eliana Lorena used Barbie as a model to showcase her interpretation of cultural dress from around the world. Barbie was literally her canvas and the outfits were the artist’s personal expression. This was one of the 500 different Barbie dolls representing 500 different cultures that were auctioned at a charity event. Barbie has no religious affiliation and we have no plans to make commercial editions of the dolls. These dolls are not available for sale.

Fl Barbara – you might try laminating your bumper stickers, and then using a small piece of tape to attach them to the inside of your back window. You can keep them up while you’re driving, but pull them down easily when you’re going to be away from the car. I used to do that with my anti-Bush stickers, because San Diego is a pretty conservative town and I didn’t want car damage. But I agree that the Obama mobs are far more dangerous than the Bush mobs were. Anyway, thought I’d throw the idea out there as a possible compromise….

I really want to change so I can do more than send prowls to try and change the world for the better for women (well, everyone really. Where women are treated well, the whole world benefits). Well, he got on his bike and started to ride off.. I said no way.. so, I jumped in my truck and I followed him with my Bight lights on…. He didn’t know the neighborhood…. because, he was heading up a street that has about a 80% incline (like San Francisico)…. when he started to poop out I thought just for a second… I could just run him over and be done with it…. Then, I thought I don’t want the scum shit on my tires… I told him if I ever see you again it will be the last time you will ever come on my street… He thanked me and said I was doing something very stupid… I agreed! I spoke with reps from all the guilty parties, except the so called designer (such talent to drap a piece of cloth over a doll and call it a design.)

I had to laugh my ass of at the women from Mattel as she read me their ridiculous responce. When she told me that Barbie had no religious affiliation I could hardly stop laughing at her.
But then I thought aboutit.
Does anybody now of a Holy Communion Barbie or a Bot Mitzvah Barbie? Well I guess it’s official then Barbie is a Muslim.

I will call tomorrow and when they read me that crap I will let them have it.

So Mattel is passing the blame to the designer? Did they not have to approve the final design of the doll? Did they not produce the doll?

They were thinking money that’s all it is money on the backs of women.

No religious affiliation? Guess what you idiots just affiliated her with a religion.. Islam..she is wearing a Burqua, what says Islamic suppression of a woman more than a burqua does?
Barbie is now Muslim unless she converts then she will be dead Barbie.

Casper Cat – I was wondering about BillieJo just yesterday !!!
I think I will send an email to see what is up.

I used to work with a designer who had gone on to take a job with Mattel in LA as a designer – probably costume designer. I wonder if she is still there. But it is interesting what I found out about Burqa’s on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burqa
The way I see it, our priority is to prevent the use of Burqa’s on US soil first and foremost. No matter what, I am selfish – take care of our country first. If we can’t take care of our own backyard…how can we expect to exercise our whims on other countries.

Yes definately we must prevent the wearing of the Burqua in the US.

I think it would be fun if we started refering to all the women enablers of misogyny as Barbies in a Burka. It would be the perfect answer to the term tea bagger.

Hum,
Barbie in a Burka:
Nancy Pelosi
Donna Brazil
Valerie Jarret
Susan Rice
Maureen Dowd
Rachel Maddow
Katie Couric
Oprah Winfrey
Martha Stewart
Scarlet Johannson
Demi Moore
Courtney Cox

Feel free to add to this list of Barbies in a Burka.

For those who want to answer the Mattel email about Barbie not having a religious affiliation
Here is a definition of the Hijab taken from freddiebrowns link on burquas

e  A hijab or ḥijāb (حجاب, pronounced [ħiˈdʒæːb]), as commonly understood in the English-speaking world, is the type of head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women, but can also refer to modest Muslim styles of dress in general. The Arabic word literally means curtain or cover (noun), based on the root حجب meaning “to cover, to veil, to shelter”. Most Islamic legal systems define this type of modest dressing as covering everything except the face and hands in public.[1][2] According to Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality;[3] the word for a headscarf or veil used in the Koran is khimār (خمار) and not hijab. Still another definition is metaphysical, where al-hijab “refers to the veil which separates man or the world from God.”[2] Since the 1970s, hijab has emerged as a symbol of Islamic consciousness. Muslims differ as to how “hijab dress” should be enforced, particularly over the role of religious police that are enforcing hijab in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The Barbie in black is wearing a hajib.

Hi FLBarbara! Thanks to you and Murphy for this prowl! I was just thinking, I’d like to see Dr. Phyllis Chesler do an article (and some TV interviews) about the real meaning of the burqa in Islam. Also, I wish she would do an article and interviews about the basics of the Islamic belief system, particularly concerning women. Far too many people in the western world (some of whom obviously work at Mattel, Save the Children and Sotheby’s) seem to view the burqa as simply some sort of innocuous ‘fashion statement’ or ‘cultural artifact,’ and tend to view the Islamic belief system as just any other ‘religion’ — when nothing could be further from the truth. So sorry to hear about your car. Seems the Obots and their cult leader are either ignorant of, or believe they’re entitled to redefine, the meaning of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. When I receive Mattel’s smarmy reply to my prowl, in my response to them I will include the link Murphy provided to Brigitte Gabriel’s remarks on Fox about Burqa Barbie. Thanks for your inspiring work on behalf of freedom and safety for women and girls! You are a true shero!

Amen!!!!! Ban the burqa. We have to remove shoes. Men have to remove hats, hoods and sunglasses when approaching a bank teller. The hell with burqas. NO BURQAs.

My mom says some of these loons even want to get their driver’s license wearing veils. Hey! Go back to Saudi Arabia and get your license, huh?

Also, AMEN on your post about working to elect women! Go, Martha!! ;)

You should see the men ranting against her in the Globe comments section (rhetorical…don’t bother, it’s too boring!). One had the balls to admit he didn’t see her as a leader because he didn’t think of women that way. At least he was honest.

I do not think it is any of those things. I think core feminist conscientiousness telling you not to walk behind, but walk where you belong, aside or ahead. It’s their core un conscientiousness that tells them to walk ahead. Maybe you will awaken their awareness!

71FLBarbara….Regarding this line of your excellent comments re this whole issue as well as your great actions…

“Barbie is now an oppressed Muslim woman like it or not Mattel.”
I think this act of Mattel and its message is far worse…

They have used Barbie for years to promote her among young girls as the fantasized ultimate icon and (false of course) symbol of the ideal
AMERICAN Woman….

Thus…”Barbie is now an oppressed AMERCAN woman….” and Mattel
is responsible. That subliminal message is far worse for our young women in this country…and our boys….

I have always refused to buy Barbies of any kind for any of my young girl relatives and have told them why…over the years..

Consider the pleasure of this… Go find all the olde beat up Barbies. you can…with their hair standing straight up and all messed up …and naked…(have seen many a one of these after American girls finish with them…)

Put them in a box naked of course with a little American flag
Send them to the CEO of Mattel….with this or similar notes..

“Screw Burkhas…American women would rather be naked” ! as you will be when we finish rejecting everyone of your so called toys for our children…”

or whatever moves your protesting hearts….

My reply to Mattel

Dear Mattel,

Thank you for responding, but you have not answered any of my questions, least of all my concerns that Mattel has put its name on a Barbie dressed in Hajibs and Burquas.
It seems you are just playing the Blame game, its the designers fault.

“In this case, Italian artist and designer Eliana Lorena used Barbie as a model to showcase her interpretation of cultural dress from around the world. Barbie was literally her canvas and the outfits were the artist’s personal expression.”

Mattel takes no responsibility that they approved the final design of the Burqua Barbie, that they produced the Burqua Barbie and added the Mattel stamp of approval to Burqua Barbie.

Barbie is Mattel and Burqua Barbie is Mattel.

My organization PUMA PAC strives to bring awareness to the suppression of women around the world. One of the most suppressive garments on the planet is the Burqua. To label the Burqua as “A Cultural Dress” and show case it as a costume or a fashion trend along side of a sari or a sarong ignores the fact that a woman in a burqua is a woman who is living in an isolation chamber. Unable to see, and walk properly, she is denied vitamin D from the sun. A woman in a burqua is denied the right to drive a car, she is not driving a pink Barbie sports car, she is denied the right to an education there are no Barbie lawyers, pilots and astronauts under the burqua and more importantly she is denied the right to the freedom of choice, a burqua is mandatory and if she choices to forgo the wearing of the isolation chamber she will be flogged or stoned.

Another in correct fact in your email is that “Barbie has no religious affiliation” and that is how it should be. Mattel has by virtue of Barbie wearing a hijab and a burqua affiliated her with the Islamic religion. Burqua and Hijab Barbie are either Muslim or they are living under Islamic law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burqa

I am happy to hear Mattel has “no plans to make commercial editions of the dolls. These dolls are not available for sale.”
The purpose of writing to you in masse was to prevent any plans Mattel might have to make commercial the Burqua Barbie, since Iran is the third largest toy importers and Barbie in her bathing suit is banned in Iran, but Barbie in a burqua or a hijab could be a huge source of revenue for Mattel.

The fact remains Burqua Barbie was produced by Mattel and was sold at auction to generate funds for Save the Children, a charity that Neil B. Friedman, the President of the Mattel Brands Division at Mattel, Inc. is on the board of directors.

And finally, you could have produced an email that at least sounded sincere to the thousands of us who wrote you with concerns that Mattel was using Barbie not to inspire girls but to suppress girls.

I thought you might like to see what is under the veil.

http://pajamasmedia.com/phyllischesler/2009/11/23/under-the-islamic-veil-faces-disfigured-by-acid/

Sincerely,

182

FLBarbara 11.24.09 at 1:09 pm

To Save the Children I include this.

The fact remains Burqua Barbie was produced by Mattel and was sold at auction to generate funds for Save the Children, a charity that Neil B. Friedman, the President of the Mattel Brands Division at Mattel, Inc. is on the board of directors.

That fact remains that a charity, save the Children, that works to protect and educate children did profit from the auction of Burqua Barbie..
Off the backs of the girls I believed you worked to save you did profit.
.
The end does not justify the means.

You approved of and sold a doll that seeks not to inspire girls but rather sends the message to girls that to be uneducated and sub missive and abused is acceptable to a civilized society. You sent a message to. The boys who grow up to be the men who abuse women that is acceptable in a civil society.

Seriously what were you thinking? You above all should be aware that the burqua is a symbol of suppression.

From Human Rights Watch:

http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/07/02/beyond-burqa

[Note: This article references the proposed ban on burqas by French President Sarkozy. Comments in [] are mine – SAR]

[snip]

Violence against women is tolerated in the name of tradition all over the world. Women’s oppression is universal. Those who want to help address this sorry state of affairs should start not by telling Muslim women how to dress [that would be facist], but by tackling the root causes of this oppression both at home and abroad: discrimination, lack of access to services, and unequal economic opportunities. [Which work IS the business of feminism.]

A legal ban in Europe on the wearing of the burqa in public life would be just as much a violation of the rights of those women who wish to wear it as is the forcing of the veil on those women who do not wish to wear it in, for example, Iran or Saudi Arabia. [Equal rights for all - sound familiar?] Muslim women should have the right to move around dressed as they choose, to make decisions about their lives and religion, whether we understand or support those choices or not. [Generalize this to include all women, and this is the heart of the feminist philosophy.]

[snip]

The argument that “the burqa oppresses all women” and therefore should be banned by the state implies that it is up to the state to regulate and limit a woman’s choices about how she expresses her religious belief through her outward appearance. This is an outrageous interference that so far from protecting Muslim women, which is presumably the intention, actually further undermines their ability and their right to choose how to lead their lives and how to present themselves in public.

Human Rights Watch recently conducted research in Germany, where a number of states have banned the wearing of the headscarf, a far less severe form of covering the body, for women teachers.

Fathima, a young teacher, described her choice to wear a headscarf to school: “They should ask our colleagues, directors, school inspectors, the parents, the pupils what kind of person we are. All of them have experienced me and know me so well, that they can attest for sure that I am not oppressed and that I do not wear the headscarf because of oppression.” [In other words, don't stereotype people based on their appearance or dress.]

[A couple of examples from my own experience: while I was working towards one of my degrees at a university here in the US, I met several women who were doing the same while choosing to wear burqas. A close friend of mine here in the US - a 60s radical, as progressive as they come - who had a Muslim boyfriend sometimes wore a burqa because on occasion she found it refreshing to not be treated as a sex object. Again, it was HER choice. ]

She argues powerfully that the scarf cannot simply be written off as a symbol of oppression, and that for her wearing the headscarf represents her choice to practice her religion while still participating actively in Germany society. [Freedom of choice, a feminist ideal]

There is no doubt that many Muslim women are forced to wear the burqa or other forms of veil and are unable to make decisions about the most fundamental aspects of their lives. But there is equally little doubt that many other Muslim women have made a free and informed decision to wear such coverings, and value the space to practice their religion in public. Banning the burqa fundamentally undermines their rights and perhaps most importantly does not provide any meaningful assistance to those women who are coerced and forced to cover their bodies and faces. [Freedom of choice again]

Politicians like Sarkozy who claim to stand up for women’s rights must look beyond what women wear. Banning the burqa will not make it go away; it will only force the women who wear it, whether by choice or under coercion, to drop out of sight.

[By this article's logic we should ban dolls/action figures with military dress, since that is historically synonymous with the mass killing of civilians. Or pirate dress, as that is synonymous with murderous thieves. Or schoolgirl dress, as that is synonymous with being young and immature. ]
