In a San Francisco courtroom two weeks ago, a prominent lawyer opposed to same-sex marriage made a concession that could mark a turning point in the legal wars over the purpose and meaning of marriage.

The lawyer, Charles J. Cooper, has studied the matter deeply, and his erudite briefs are steeped in history. He cannot have been blindsided by the question Judge Vaughn R. Walker asked him: What would be the harm of permitting gay men and lesbians to marry?

“Your honor, my answer is: I don’t know,” Mr. Cooper said. “I don’t know.”

A couple of hours later, Judge Walker denied Mr. Cooper’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to establish a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. The concession and the ruling that followed it have transformed a federal lawsuit that had been viewed with suspicion by many gay rights advocates into something with the scent of promise.

In the courtroom, Mr. Cooper’s arguments seemed to fall of their own weight. The government should be allowed to favor opposite-sex marriages, Mr. Cooper said, in order “to channel naturally procreative sexual activity between men and women into stable, enduring unions.”

House Health Care bill exceeds $1 trillion

WASHINGTON — Health care legislation taking shape in the House carries a price tag of at least $1 trillion over a decade, significantly higher than the target President Barack Obama has set, congressional officials said Friday as they struggled to finish work on the measure for a vote early next month.

Democrats have touted an unreleased Congressional Budget Office estimate of $871 billion in recent days, a total that numerous officials acknowledge understates its true cost by $150 billion or more. That figure excludes several items designed to improve benefits for Medicare and Medicaid recipients and providers, as well as public health programs and more, they added.

The news of higher numbers of runaway children, that is the REAL National Emergency!

i agree i think hes useing it as a distraction . i mean this guys call for a national emergency for something that has caused 1000 deaths. but the plain jane version of the flu claims an avg of 36000 lives per year.

I am very frustrated with our FLOTUS, as you can tell, of all the issues facing women in 2009 the issue she decided as a Harvard educated lawyer is planting a garden and grabbing a Hula Hoop. This is not 1960 when maybe that would be an acceptable FLOTUS platform.

The most trivial of issues is what she will speak to for the next 4 years. Who can argue her platform? Its safe..don’t want to take “heat” like Hillary did and does by addressing those unpleasant topics like Violence against women and their children.

Watching the White House is like watching Ozzie and Harriet meet the Howells of Gilligans’ Island.

They tell us the reason they cant stop all this fraud in Medicare, how are they gonna keep up with everyone including businesses that dont have health insurace that meets their guidelines? Who is gonna do the tracking? What if individuals dont have the fine money, what if businesses dont have the fine money? And, what are they paying for? What kind of plan with they have?
There was a guy on fox this am that told of how he scammed Medicare for
20 million dollars. Something is seriously wrong with this whole concept.

Monitoring the shenanigans of the Obama Camp Runamok lo, these many past months hasn’t exactly lent itself to R&R, either. Like being forced at bazooka-point to ride shotgun in Marty McFly’s DeLorean after it’s been commandeered by the Ringling Brothers for use as a clown car thrill ride attraction at Six Flags Over Purgatory, I’ve most often found myself screaming, “what the holy fuck?!?” as I tried to hang on desperately between alternating bouts of wide-eyed terror and maniacal delirium disguised as amusement while being flung around hairpin turns by BozoBama the Driver. Neither state tends to lend itself to the dreamless slumber of REM sleep, as I’m sure you can imagine, and as my prior writing from that mindspace reflects.

Can’t watch that video simofish, it’s too painful when she says she fell short of her goal. We know she did not fall short, it was grabbed from her.

Gee, I’m so relieved not seeing the banner with Jillian the trainer on the biggest loser (is that still on tv?). I felt guilty sitting in front of my computer instead of exercising physically.
