Do you have trouble sleeping? Wake up too early? Can’t sleep through the night? Me too. This is a thread for Puma Night Owls.
An almost full moon over the lagoon from the Bellagio in the city that never sleeps. No, not New York. I think New York sleeps like a baby compared to Las Vegas.
VEGAS NOTES: Stepped off the elevator in the lobby almost into a mostly naked man with wet hair who was wearing a bathing suit, a long black fur coat, and a cowboy hat — nothing else. Well probably flip-flops. I never looked down that far, so stunned was I by his middle region. He was quite friendly however when he noticed my sincerely stunned reaction. “Well, How DO you DO!?” he asked. I walked on into the lobby.
A man going up the up escalator while we were going down was snorting cocaine from his left cuff into his nose. He licked his right pinkie like it was a dipped in cream cheese frosting. We were going down — he kept going up higher and I lost sight of him — but he saw me seeing him getting high and he smiled.
This is a town for neither small breasted women nor book worms, and being how I am both, I reeeeaaally don’t fit in, but here’s the other ting — everyone here is nice. Not talking about the paid employees who might be paid to be nice but are even so pretty damn nice nonetheless, but the waiters and the cabbies (yay Lower East Side! ;-0 ) and the shuttle bus drivers who never cease to be helpful and kind.
I read my foolish book last night in the corner of some ritzy, sexy pick-up bar and the cocktail waitress treated me like I was her favorite customer all night.
I expected to hate Vegas with the burning passion of ten thousand suns and find that I like it very much, almost as much as New York.
Damn you Vegas!

Murphy, you are full of surprises, very much like the woman orchestra conductor I was fortunate to see a couple of weeks ago! She was wonderful, as you are, at dynamically/magically bringing out the best in the ‘voices’ before her. I’ve been to Vegas many times over the years (no, that isn’t why my fortunes have waned of late…), and sometimes I still do like it. Though, I do think today it’s a bit ‘over the top’ compared to years past. I agree that most of the people are friendly. You’re probably not old enough to remember the NOW boycott of Vegas during the fight to extend the deadline for ERA ratification, since Nevada was one of the states still unratified (don’t know what the status is now). So, that still lingers in my mind, casting a bit of a negative shadow on the place. Did you gamble, people watch, go to shows, shop, etc.? Inquiring minds want to know. Good to see you here Murphy. You are missed. I’ll mail in a contribution tomorrow. Really do have to get some rest now. Thanks Murphy for all you do (watch out for that gambling though!)

lookit how in the cell phone picture I took, planet hollywood and THE MOON are locked in a light-saber duel to the death. random coincidence? I think NOT!
nah, no gambling for me CJK, thanks for the comment and thoughts though. Both my grandmothers LOVED to gamble, so I think the desire is innocuous, I just happen to be immune.
Im addicted to people watching though.

No, New York doesn’t sleep and I am proof of it!;-)
Any expectations on WWOD on public option seem to be answered – and not in a hopey changey way

Yay, murphy is in Vegas! (I don’t really like gambling either, but love people watching too.)
yeah, I am one of those puma night owls. Sleeping schedule is never normal and I seem to get by easily on little sleep. I’ve been this way since I was very little. Parents would put me to bed but then I would hear adult laughter, music or the TV, and I felt bummed like I was missing something. I like the night…I like going out at night or just being awake and alone at night–peaceful and private. Get decent writing done at night…
NYC does sleep, millions commute in and then millions commute out and it does get quiet late at night. I’ve gone to Times Square at 4 AM and NO ONE is there…strange feeling. (Late at night would be the only time I ever set foot near Times Square…all tourists in the daytime. I sometimes wonder if the tourists know that they are not looking at New Yorkers but just other tourists…?!)
I read an article about how the world discriminates against night owls–how everything is set up for early bird daytime people. heh. But I wouldn’t WANT everyone else awake with me, then it wouldn’t be so special. I’d probably be a morning person if daytime was flipped to nighttime. pfft.
Well, have a great time, murphy!

Pawlenty preps 2012 campaign team
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has been quietly assembling the blueprint of a presidential campaign and will announce Thursday the support of a group of high-level political strategists and donors, complemented by a handful of top new media consultants, POLITICO has learned.

HR 554 is 1428 pages long. Here is a site called WETHEPEOPLECANREAD.ORG It has your members of Congress phone numbers and email addresses. It has talking points to convince them to sign the petition to put the bill online, and to give at least 72 hours to read the bill. They need 37 more signatures from Congress.
This is a breakthrough project that can literally change the way that legislation passes through the US House of Representatives from now on. Similar to the second provision of our Responsible Health Care Reform Pledge, House Resolution 554 would amend the House Rules to require that all non-emergency legislation be posted on the Internet for 72 hours before it could be considered on the House floor.
This takes advantage of 21st century technology to empower ordinary citizens, as well as old and new media, bloggers, etc., in a way never before possible. If passed, it would raise transparency and accountability to new levels. It also captures some of the energy of this summer’s town halls and 9-12 rallies. It might have prevented the egregious AIG bonuses from being included in the Stimulus bill, as just one example.
However, H. Res. 554 is being bottled up by House leadership. Fortunately, there’s a way around this impasse. It’s called a Discharge Petition. If 218 House Members (a majority of the 435 Representatives) sign a Discharge Petition for House Resolution 554, the Resolution will be brought to the House floor for consideration.

Btw, I am not advocating the above site, only the particular section I pointed out. It has the names of all the Congress members for each state in red, who are sponsors of the bill. I just found it an interesting breakdown. I heard about it on Greta last night.

Since Mackenzie’s public confession on Oprah, counselors have seen a jump in people seeking help for abuse and incest.
Between Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) says its hotline had a 26 percent increase in call volume and their online hotline had an 83 percent spike.

So that’s the good that came out of it…maybe people are getting help.

“Obama’s health insurance whopper: He’s misleading the country on a key reform proposal”
“As soon as I sign this bill,” President Obama promised in his prime-time address to Congress, “it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick.” Thunderous applause followed. It’s easy to understand why – no one wants to lose their insurance coverage when they need it most.
But here’s a news flash: It’s already illegal for insurance companies to drop patients once they become ill. It has been for over a decade”

Well damn! I never wanted to go to Vegas and now I do, gee Murphy I will lose the HOUSE!!

Awwwww…..I was out last night, and missed the night owl thread! I just popped in to say I’m not a gambler, either, but I’ve always wanted to go to Vegas! I’ve always heard that ski resorts and gambling casinos are fun places to go if you *don’t* ski or gamble, because you can enjoy all the other perks. More details, please, Murphy!
Also, I sent my letter off to Toys R Us. Do they want a spokeswoman who’s an apologist for child rape? Don’t even get me started on Woody Allen daring to come out in “support” of fellow child rapist Polanski. Allen’s own son won’t speak to him because he made his sister into his stepmom. And as the son said, to say she is not my sister is an insult to adopted children everywhere.
It would be interesting to compare the Polanski apologists to the Woody Allen apologists back when he dumped his family after seducing one of his daughters….whom he had stood in as a father figure since she was 7 or so.

—————
Makes sense… these controversies (Jeffrey Masson), confessions (McKensie), publicity (Polanski), apply pressure and restimulate memories, make it more difficult to keep secrets, make it more okay to deal with the turmoil, guilt, shame, offer an entre to discussing.
RAINN is a good organization. Maybe ACORN’s money should be dedicated to incest and sexual abuse and barbarian violence organizations.
