in America 2.0,Bailout Blackhole, profound question of the day

Blvd at MGM - Sunrise_Las Vegas

The distraction continues, though I see a bright spot opening up this week. Meanwhile, in Boston, the town is a-twitter over the news that mayoral challengers Michael Flaherty and Sam Yoon will join forces, sort of, to try to unseat the 4-term mayor as a team.

Also close to my home, the residents of  a thriving tent city in Providence, Rhode Island were forcibly evicted and moved to Pawtucket, a town eleven miles away with no Ivy League university within its bounds (not that that has anything to do with anything, I’m sure.)

Driving around to various hockey rinks and other points of interest I’ve noticed a DECIDED uptick in the number of vacant store fronts. The state of small business in small town America (or at least small town New England) seems DISMAL, to me at least. How are the strip malls and Main Streets of your towns doing? Is is it just me?

Will be checking in all day today — be wonderful to each other!

For the Joke of the Day >>>LOL

Circle Flies
A cowboy from Texas attends a social function where Barack Obama is trying to gather more support for his Health Plan. Once he discovers the cowboy is from President Bush’s home area, he starts to belittle him by talking in a southern drawl and single syllable words. As he was doing that, he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The cowboy says, “Y’all havin’ some problem with them circle flies?”

Obama stopped talking and said, “Well, yes, if that’s what they’re called, but I’ve never heard of circle flies.” “Well Sir,” the cowboy replies,”circle flies hang around ranches. They’re called circle flies because they’re almost always found circling around the back end of a horse.”

“Oh,” Obama replies as he goes back to rambling. But, a moment later he stops and bluntly asks, “Are you calling me a horse’s ass?”"No, Sir,” the cowboy replies, “I have too much respect for the citizens of this country to call their President a horse’s ass.”

“That’s a good thing,” Obama responds and begins rambling on once more…
After a long pause, the cowboy, in his best Texas drawl says,”Hard to fool them flies, though.”

Too bad about the nomadic tent city. Wouldn’t it be nice if some billionaire philanthropist who owns more land than anyone in North America (Ted Turner) decided to give over some acreage to homeless people? jus’ sayin’…

YES. Stores are definitely shutting down all over the place. I know of an Avenue in an affluent area that is practically closed down. Rent must be too much and not enough people are shopping. It looks bad for the neighborhood in general.

shamelessly lifted from Dakinikat’s news roundup at TC:

Cuba Pins Hopes On New Farms Run for Profit

CEIBA DEL AGUA, Cuba — Faced with the smothering inefficiencies of a state-run economy and unable to feed his people without massive imports of food, Cuban leader Raúl Castro has put his faith in compatriots like Esther Fuentes and his little farm out in the sticks.

excerpt:

The Cuban government, in its most dramatic reform since Castro took over for his ailing older brother Fidel three years ago, is offering private farmers such as Fuentes the use of fallow state lands to grow crops — for a profit.

Capitalism comes to the communist isle? Not quite, but close. Raúl Castro prefers to call it “a new socialist model.” But Fuentes gets to pocket some extra cash.

“The harder you work, the better you do,” said Fuentes, who immediately understood the concept.

ARRESTED FOR BUYING COLD MEDICINE

CLINTON — When Sally Harpold bought cold medicine for her family back in March, she never dreamed that four months later she would end up in handcuffs.

Now, Harpold is trying to clear her name of criminal charges, and she is speaking out in hopes that a law will change so others won’t endure the same embarrassment she still is facing.

“This is a very traumatic experience,” Harpold said.

Harpold is a grandmother of triplets who bought one box of Zyrtec-D cold medicine for her husband at a Rockville pharmacy. Less than seven days later, she bought a box of Mucinex-D cold medicine for her adult daughter at a Clinton pharmacy, thereby purchasing 3.6 grams total of pseudoephedrine in a week’s time.

Those two purchases put her in violation of Indiana law 35-48-4-14.7, which restricts the sale of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, or PSE, products to no more than 3.0 grams within any seven-day period.

Her police mug shot ran on the front page of her local newspaper, she wrote, in a letter to the Tribune-Star, “with an article entitled, ‘17 Arrested in Drug Sweep.’”

While the law was written with the intent of stopping people from purchasing large quantities of drugs to make methamphetamine, the law does not say the purchase must be made with the intent to make meth.

Recovery board unveils makeover of stimulus spending Web site
BY ALIYA STERNSTEIN 09/28/2009

Government-appointed watchdogs debuted on Monday the much-anticipated overhaul of Recovery.gov, featuring sophisticated pictorial representations of spending data, advanced search functions, multimedia tutorials and some downloads.
The upgrade does not include new stimulus results, such as jobs statistics, which will be funneled into the site later in October.
The Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board intends the site to be a window into the Obama administration’s economic recovery effort and has the expectation that the public — concerned citizens, academia, journalists, agencies, states, recipients, Congress and special interest groups — will visit the site to learn more about how the $787 billion in stimulus funds are being spent.
The site represents 10 weeks of work by a team of vendors that were awarded a potential $18 million contract on July 8. Stimulus contracts granted by federal agencies will not appear until Oct. 15, and information reported by the private sector and states will not be posted until Oct. 30. But board officials said they wanted the public to learn and test out the new features before then.
The financial data that is available on the site comes from the Federal Procurement Data System and USASpending.gov, a database containing federal contracts and loans, and weekly financial activity reports from agencies. The recipient data will be fed from FederalReporting.gov, an online inbox through which companies, nonprofits and states will submit quarterly spending reports beginning Oct. 1.

Helloo (((PUMALAND))))—-recovering from a VERY
bad FLU—-feels good to be back.

FYI—requested from a friend to pass along:
________________________________________________
All,

• Every member of Congress, the President and Vice President and every federal employee receives health care through a taxpayer funded “public option”. Why are so many of them so intent on denying the same possibility to the rest of us? And why are we so complacent about their hypocrisy?

• Each beneficiary of the publicly funded Federal Employees Health Program who opposes a public option should be called out and exposed for hypocrisy in denying to others what they have for themselves, and in some cases, rabble rousing to cynically confuse their constituents about the role in government in the health care system.

• No-one in the Federal Employees Health Program is denied coverage because of prior conditions or health status. Why deny this to anyone else?

• A large proportion of health care is already a public mandate for broad categories of Americans – Medicare, Medicaid, the VA… While each system has its issues and could be improved, most could be dealt with by aggressive fraud control, decent reimbursements for providers, and sensible primary and preventive care.

• It is amazing that Medicare is as cost effective as it is; it covers the most health care needy cohort of the population. Imagine how reasonably priced it would be if its risk was expanded to a less less needy younger population.

• These same hypocrites have exempted themselves from Social Security and have their own very attractive pension system unavailable to the rest of us taxpayers.

IMMEDIATE ACTION STEPS

Health care reform is before Congress NOW. Please

• For each of you with a Congressional representative or Senator who opposes a strong public option, demand that he/she leave their taxpayer public option health care before voting against it and denying it for all other Americans.

• Provide this information and insist that your local newspapers, TV and radio stations call out the hypocrisy of these public officials.

• Organize local labor, women’s organizations and civic groups to picket the offices and homes of the hypocrites.

Please send me other suggestions for bringing reason, consistency and honesty to the process of health care reform, and I will gladly pass them along.

Best,
Ricki

Please send this on to others who can also take leadership and action.

Public Service Announcement

“Folks, it’s time to pass the blegging bowl.

In the past year this little blog has become weirdly popular, which is a lovely thing. What’s not so lovely is my server bills. Even in light months like this, when I’m not posting much because of my finger injury, I have to keep shelling out for extra bandwidth. In busier months my host sends me emails tactfully suggesting that I buy a dedicated server so I don’t keep crashing the damn box. As hobbies go, this one is becoming a little too expensive.

No, make that a lot too expensive. My starving artist/underinsured sicko lifestyle is glamorous, to be sure, but financially it’s pretty precarious.

I’ve looked at ways to monetize the blog, but they’re all unacceptable for one reason or another. No, I’m not going to run porny ads (over my fucking dead body, Bob) or yellow teeth billboards or paid links or any of that bullshit. Do we really want that in the smoking lounge? I’d rather quit the blog.

But I don’t want to quit the blog! I love it here! I love you people!
(Violet begins sobbing, is dragged offstage by an embarrassed Raoul.)

So, I’m going to ask you guys to chip in. If you’d like to keep the smoking lounge in operation, please consider contributing to its upkeep. I’m thinking maybe a fundraiser could help me get out of the hole I dug with server bills these past few months and also fund whatever new hellish thing my host is going to force on me. Think of it as a Jerry Lewis telethon, only without muscular dystrophy. Or, you know, Jerry Lewis.

You don’t have to have a PayPal account yourself to use this; PayPal will also process credit cards, debit cards, and checks.

I am hugely grateful to all of you for your support, feedback,
participation, and love. I mean that. When I started this blog a few years ago I didn’t think anyone would actually read it. It amazes me sometimes that people do. Thank you.” — Violet Socks

Just catching up

So POTUS Obama has spent more time talking with David Letterman than with General Stanley McChrystal

Obama is off to Denmark to bring the Olympics to Chicago where corrupt politics is an everyday Olympic event..with the gold medal winning event of how to get elected. The object of the game is to force your opponents off the ballot by any and all means possible. Only player left wins the Gold, a seat in the Senate.

100% agree. I really like that Michelle Obama said this:

When asked about motherhood in an interview for Prevention magazine, she said she actually learned what not to do from her mom, which is to sacrifice your entire being for your kids:

“She’d say being a good mother isn’t all about sacrificing. It’s really investing and putting yourself higher on your priority list.”

“Throughout my life, I’ve learned to make choices that make me happy and make sense for me. . . So I have freed myself to put me on the priority list and say, yes, I can make choices that make me happy, and it will ripple and benefit my kids, my husband and my physical health.”

“That’s hard for women to own. We’re not taught to do that. It’s a lesson that I want to teach my girls.”

Members of Congress “enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country,” according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

They “can choose from among consumer-driven and high deductible plans that offer catastrophic risk protection with higher deductibles, health saving/reimbursable accounts and lower premiums, or fee-for-service (FFS) plans, and their preferred provider organizations (PPO), or health maintenance organizations (HMO).” These choices would be nice for all of us, but they’re not in the offing. Instead, if you don’t enroll in a “qualified” health plan and submit proof of enrollment to the federal government, you’ll be tracked down and fined (sections 3101 and 6055).

And whatever health-insurance law is passed should apply to members of Congress. If it isn’t good enough for them, it shouldn’t be imposed on the rest of us.

He had reached the 27,000 foot summit–near the roof of the world–on September 24th and had safely descended to 23,000 feet. Kat,

#33 – Even though Michelle said it and yes, there is a good possibility someone wrote it for her, it does not make the statement any less true.

Women (generalizing here) put themselves and their needs last when it comes to a family situation. IMHO this is the cause of many problems that we have in society today. Women (generalizing) are viewed as the doormats of society, because we let ourselves be. How can we (generalizing) be taken seriously when we don’t even put ourselves on the list of family importance.

Just saying…

kat in your hat 09.29.09 at 1:35 pm

I don’t think it’s admirable for women to sacrifice their “entire beings” when it comes to motherhood. I think it’s sad and bad role modeling for girls and boys.

I would hang myself if *my* identity solely became “mother” or “wife.” I have so much more to me…so many goals, dreams, talents and desires. How horrible to imagine that all these other parts of me would have to die (be sacrificed) just because of having children. That’s…terrifying and very depressing.

Anyway, I like Michelle saying what she did. I wouldn’t want a stressed out and unhappy mother who secretly (or NOT so secretly) resents her life. I wouldn’t want a mother who doesn’t follow her heart and her dreams–or have her own hobbies and her own separate adult life.

I know everyone says: the kids come first. I say that Woman comes first. Kinda like: Happy mom = happy home.

(I’m not saying that motherhood doesn’t naturally come with some sacrifices or that a dream to be a mom is a bad thing.)

Murphy,

Responding to your question on changes in occupancy in strip malls etc…

The SoCal Inland Empire area has been very hard hit during the recession.

My personal observations are…
Went to a large enclosed mall near me (glasses need adjusting) Saw a lot of people walking around but very few had purchased anything.

Strip Malls… Yep, small shops and restaurants are having a very tough time. One store was open 6 mo’s max. It was an independent outlet store and I never saw anyone going in and out of it.

Brand new strip center 1/2 block from me has 1 maybe 2 tenants total. It is made up of concrete tilt up buildings and lots of glass. Center fronts a major street. Good exposure to traffic but it is now going on 3 years in construction and is not completed. Landscaping for the center is not complete and like I said 1 to 2 tenants.

Pretty dismal for the mom and pop stores and restaurants around here.

Economy is not improving and as the consumer confidence #’s released today show… people are very worried about losing there jobs and are holding on to what money they have.

Does that change the fact that what she said re: women placing themselves on the bottom of the priority list is true?

We may not like the messenger but the message is true. Therefore, if it helps one woman to see the way to empowering themselves it is a good thing.

Long and short of it… Someone has to say these things and get the message out there…

Did you really expect her to say” anything different than she comes first?
I want someone to ask her some tough questions about her personal beliefs. Follow up on statements she made as a women and choices she made as a mother.

Take a good look at that statement.Michelle doesn’t even speak for a quarter of women/ mothers in this country.

Let’s talk about why the majority of women in this country can not put themselves on the top of the priority list.
Start with women who have had their hopes and dreams shattered by men who walk out and have no legal responsibility to their children. Women who work 3 jobs to earn enough to feed, cloth, educate and provide an education for children.
Women who are abused and must find a shelter for them and their children.
Women who do not take their own meds to be able to feed their children and show up and a hospital ER and are told Get OUT.

Yes women are making choices everyday that Michele Obama has no clue about.
When she starts talking about WHY the majority of women have never been able to put themselves at the top of the “priority list” I will start listening to what she says.
Until then…I find nothing she has to say of interest.

FLBarbara #94:

Poor and struggling mothers should especially make themselves a priority high on the list. I think women should build networks (friends, extended family) to help with babysitting and emotional support. A mother needs time alone and time to have her own life. A network would help.

If any mother cannot feed, clothe, or take care of a child’s medical needs while working three jobs, then she is not doing what works and needs to shift gears.

“Start with women who have had their hopes and dreams shattered by men who walk out and have no legal responsibility to their children.”

One more Note on Murphys question this morning….

RE: Our observations of impact the economy is having….

From Goofsdad…

We live on a little cul-de-sac aways of any main streets. This morning while he was having his morning coffee, saw an older gentleman on an old beat up looking bike rummaging thru our trash bin… Very sad… It was not a recycle bin but regular trash, so he was either looking for stuff we may have missed putting in the recycler or he was genuinely looking for any possibly edible food.

105

kat in your hat 09.29.09 at 3:05 pm

@#101

This is a much, much deeper problem for our gender. It’s a question of self-love. Somehow women have been convinced that “sacrifice” is good, as if self-death and self-neglect is good for a woman. I swear it’s brainwashing.

Girls and women would make radically different choices if all were raised to look out for themselves first and to love and respect themselves above all else.

Too layered to get into. Whole culture is a twisted lie.

Hi FlBarbara, HP, simo, prpl, et al! IMO, MO is about 40 years behind the times re women’s rights and issues. This is the same woman who, during the campaigns, said of HRC “How can she take care of the WH, when she can’t even take care of her own house?” In other words, MO blamed HRC for WJC’s philandering. Those were not the words of a self-actualized, woman-identified, woman-supportive feminist. IMO, MO is every bit as thoroughly self-serving, self-aggrandizing, opportunistic and impervious to the real needs and concerns of others (especially women) as is her egomaniacal, narcissistic, perpetual adolescent, hangs-with-frat-boyz, regressive/repressive spouse. If she were truly a feminist, MO would’ve run for office (or become active on the national stage in some way) herself, rather than playing second-fiddle to BO Nero. In addition to all the great questions for MO from FLBarbara, one of my questions would be: What’s MO’s idea of “investing in and putting [herself] higher on the priority list”? (Making sure she has designer tennies with satin laces to go and dish up soup at the soup kitchen? Using taxpayer resources to fly herself and kids to London for a weekend? Using taxpayer resources to have BO Nero fly her to NYC for Sat. date night? Sounds a lot like Marabel Morgan’s idea of the ‘Total Woman’ to me. Certainly not a feminist, IMO.)

@#115
The key is to NEVER isolate oneself after marriage or motherhood. Need a network. It cannot be all on her. I don’t believe that women would be expected to almost totally raise the children and care for the house–even as she works outside the home–IF she was raised to look out for herself and her happines and her health first. It’s just this stupid culture.

Share, little girl. Be polite. Wait your turn.

Or, the always golden: “My mother gave her life for me.” (And then everyone actually SMILES.)

Admirable? Everyone is taught that it is, but I don’t think so anymore.

118

CJK 09.29.09 at 3:47 pm

I don’t think anyone here is saying women (rich, poor, all women) can’t or shouldn’t put themselves first. This isn’t a new or brilliant idea. It’s been discussed in women’s activism circles and by many feminist writers for many decades. I just don’t think MO deserves any kudos for having said it, especially since I don’t believe she’s really ever had any difficulty putting herself first; and neither has her spouse. I especially don’t believe she deserves any kudos for saying it, when she clearly doesn’t have a track record of supporting/encouraging ALL women, but occasionally may spew some slick PR pablum aimed at only those women who are wives, homemakers, moms (and I’ve done all of those roles, but I do not define myself as a person primarily as any one or all of those roles). National leaders have a responsibility to place the concerns of the people they supposedly represent (at least in a so-called democracy) ahead of their own selfishness and greed. We currently have virtually no national leaders doing so or even talking about doing so, and that includes MO and BO. Now that, coming from either of them, would be much more interesting.

119

kat in your hat 09.29.09 at 3:56 pm

@#117
Or, the always golden: “My mother gave her life for me.” (And then everyone actually SMILES.)

Yeah, cause then…if every mother gives her life and a high population of women around the world are mothers, then clearly women are not really living their full LIVES. It’s plain to see why it’s the MEN who actually have full Lives and get ahead.

One big DUPE. Raising kids is supposed to mainly be on her?? SAYS WHO? Who made THAT up!? And who says it should be that way now? Then people go and make their insular families and she is left to waste…actually believing that having a man could make it 50/50 when she needs many more people in her world. Many more. oh, it’s so frustrating.

Hate to interject as I know you are discussing another topic right now but I need to correct information above. There were TWO amendments before the Senate Finance committee. The first from Rockefeller failed. The Schumer amendment is separate and I do not know if this has been voted on yet.

Sen. Chuck Schumer’s proposal requires that the government negotiate rates with health care providers, like a private insurer does, instead of simply mandating them.

FLBarbara 09.29.09 at 4:05 pm

Kat

While I agree with the point you make.
Women need to love themselves and put themselves first etc.
That is in a perfect world and unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world especially when it comes to perfect for women.

Many women that love themselves stay in abusive marriages because of economic reasons. If a woman has little to no resources available to her she stays because perhaps she loves her children more. The number one reason woman finally do leave is when their children are threatened her priority is her children
Our answer to these women is shelters, which are prisons in themselves, instead of addressing Domestic Violence.

You’re also leaving out half the women in other countries who are treated as. If they are the scum of the earth and self love and time alone is also not an option.

My point was only that Michele was speaking to a very small percentage of women who can put themselves at the top of a priority list for many reasons that unless it has touched you you know nothing about it really.

You have a great idea about social networking. I started an organization that did just that. There are far too many women who are waiting for someone with a heart like yours to help.

122

kat in your hat 09.29.09 at 4:09 pm

CJK:
It’s not a new idea. It’s just an idea that won’t stick universally. Glad MO is talking this way instead of about french fries and fashion designers.

She’s talked about how selfish O was as a husband and father. She said she used to fight with him about it, and then she realized that she just couldn’t exclusively depend on him and she looked elsewhere for support on certain things and that worked.

I’m not a fan of MO, but I recognize how important it is for a first lady to say such things since it reaches so many people.

I’ll quit this for now. I just don’t ever like hearing any excuse at all for women not to put themselves first or high on the list. I can’t take it.

FLBarbara 09.29.09 at 4:19 pm

There are many reasons why women are the sole care takers of their children. Death being one, or just the choice she made to raise a child as a single woman but we are not talking about all the variables of why women raise children a lone. Or even why we need a man to do any of it.
We Don’t

Michele is viewing her life and is assuming all women have her life.

CJK 09.29.09 at 4:33 pm

I completely understand where you’re coming from, and am in agreement with your key points: women must love themselves and put themselves first/high on the list; women must avoid isolation/alienation, and have abundant access to supportive networks. My overall questions for MO remain: As a woman, how could she stand idly by and allow (even participate in) the most vicious sexist/misogynistic attacks (including those from her own husband and his campaign minions) against HRC during the primary, and against SP during the general? As a woman, and now from a position as first lady, how can she stand idly by and watch in silence as the epidemic of abuse, murder, rape, debasement, exploitation of girls and women continues to worsen here and around the world? No matter what MO says to further her own and her husband’s fortunes, IMO, nothing can excuse or erase her inaction, complicity and/or silence on these matters.

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.3 struck in the Samoan Islands region Tuesday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The warning center issued a tsunami warning for a wide area of the southern Pacific after the quake struck at about 6:50 a.m. local time. The quake’s magnitude was revised up from the initially announced 7.9.

A 1.6-meter wave was observed in Pago Pago in American Samoa and a 0.7-meter wave in Apia, Samoa, the center said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The earthquake struck about 200 kilometers south-southwest of Apia, Samoa, and 180 km east-northeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of 35 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The tsunami warning center said that based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be “destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter.”

An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii, the center said.

Hey PUMAS.
Just wanted to add my thoughts.
Kat,
When I was younger, unmarried with no children I felt the exact same way as you do. In essence I still do. However, once I had my child it all changed for me. In a way you could say that sacrificing for him does put me at the top of my priority list. It makes me happy for him to be happy. Not saying this would be true for everyone. But, I love him more than life itself and I decided to stay home with him and be a stay at home mom. That wasn’t what I had envisioned pre-child but nonetheless it is what made me happy. I don’t feel like I gave anything up. I got him off and running and now I’m picking up where I left off. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I hear what you’re saying but I just wanted to give my 2 cents. :)

ACORN May Face Trial for First Time as Nevada Prosecutors Allege ‘Widespread’ Criminal Policies
LAS VEGAS — When ACORN took to Las Vegas and started playing “Blackjack” and “21,” the activist group was making a far bigger gamble than it ever guessed, according to Nevada prosecutors.

There’s nothing wrong with playing the tables in Vegas, but authorities say ACORN was using the names of those casino games as a cover to illegally pay workers to sign up voters as part of an illegal quota system.

Murphy – regarding the dire straits of small businesses…
A lot of our customers are women small business owners – boutiques. If you remember, I blogged here that many are very discouraged, depressed and disgusted with the economy – as recent as a few months ago. Many do not see the retail economy turning for who knows when. I make it a point to ask the every day store owner and they are worried. A lot of folks are not ordering new merchandise, a few are closing and a couple have filed bankruptcy. This is all across the board… from ocean liners not carrying as much to the mom and pop all maxing out on their credit card trying to carry on without closing shop. Many are asking for net 30 terms because they are maxed out on their credit card.

So while Obama is yet on another pet project, the economy is not self improving and many small businesses are closing. I see so many shuttered businesses all over california as well.

But on another note, we are in Northern Cal. now (Bodega Bay) and are RV’ing on the coast with water on both sides. The park ranger banged on the door and handed a note to be aware of the Tsunami in Samoa – he said there may be high waves.. Glad that they are aware and taking some precaution even tho it is unlikely…

I am out there seeing the effect…closed storefronts. Strapped businesses.

Today’s example…a business the very nice man inherited from his grandpa.

Used to employ 15, now down to 2. He had to scrap most of what they do, and relocate. Now he only caters to the very wealthy, restoring precious metal items. No more fabrication also.

He and the dogs are very thin…he says he just scrapes by…actually, one of the dogs looks very hale, the thin one he just recently rescued.

#33 oo, interesting, but talk is cheap.

What exactly has Michelle done for herself except ask her hubby to come with her on interviews and to suffer his insufferable PIG comments on how she is not going to have a “role” as First Lady because she’ll be too busy being a MOM…and then he even usurps that role and pronounces, in his little WEENIE way, that he won’t stand for a “girlie” dog. (And then gets what is essentially a poodle.)

Did I say she suffered his pig comments? I meant to say she cowers and kowtows to his PIG INTERRUPTIONS and answering for her.

Reminds me of the Islamic pig who threw a fit when I approached his wife at the airport for a survey. You know, the little women chattel aren’t to speak for themselves and so far that is what I’ve seen from the sad scowling sack Michelle.

But…what the hell is up with the deisgners? Are they all pimps or clowns? I love the 70′s but hey. I comb thru two Marshalls and find only one solid color shirt each??

I broke down and went to the Good Will, because I have *no* shirts, since my former business always provided branded shirts from each client.

Guess what? The Good Will is *packed.* Plenty of customers. It was an eye-opener. And I got a handful of plain, classic shirts, too…which, even after two runs thru the laundry for “cooties” were a bargain!

Michelle Obama Will ‘Take No Prisoners’ in Pushing Chicago for 2016 Olympics
She’s got game.

And First Lady Michelle Obama, leaving tonight for Copenhagen to lobby for Chicago’s 2016 Olympics bid, is cranking it up, promising to “take no prisoners” in her quest to beat Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Madrid.

Mrs. Obama offered up some good-natured G-rated trash talk about Chicago’s rivals when she met with a group of reporters on Monday to discuss Friday’s vote by the International Olympic Committee to pick the 2016 host city.

“It’s a battle. We’re going to win,” she boasted Monday with bravado — and good humor. “Take no prisoners.”

Mrs. Obama also provided fair warning of her intentions to her counterpart in U.S. rival nations also seeking the Olympic bid. Last Thursday, at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, she said she was seated next to the first lady of Brazil at a dinner. “I adore her,” Mrs. Obama said. “And — but I said, ‘You know I’m going to hug you now — and then I’m going after you in Copenhagen.’ And she said, ‘You too.’ ”

lol, I love listening to what young women have to say about what they would or would not do in the future, before having entered unto family contracts and had children.
———-
Speaking of young women, I would love for every woman that didn’t go thought the 60-70′s women’s rights movement to have to sit down and watch 3 seasons of Mad Men before they decide to dismiss the ratification of the ERA.

Mad Men (tv series) is very similar to circumstances women had to deal within the work place back in the late 50-60′s. I remember one of my first jobs, working for B of A as a teller and being sent home because I wore a pair of sheer black nylons and they thought it was unacceptable, I had to get flesh colored ones from home. I was 18 and HAD to wear a dress or skirt to work, no slacks at all.
The trauma from that little experience is pretty much why it take a wedding for this female to put on a freakin’ dress.

Young women don’t realize it wasn’t that long ago since abortion was illegal and Stepford wives was more the norm than a fantasy.

Hold on a second.

I never said that motherhood didn’t entail some sacrifices. I never said that motherhood was bad. And I never said Michelle was a feminist hero.
____________________________
ZEE says:
“The hotshot kids spouting off who don’t have others to account for have NO CLUE. Laughable is the kindest attribute they embody.”

How so? You don’t know the lives of those “hotshot kids” to know what they know. Are you saying non-mothers didn’t witness their own mothers or know of any women who were mothers? Motherhood is not a secret club, it’s mainstream culture available for all to evaluate.

If anything, those “hotshot kids” may have more of a clue since they aren’t IN IT. It’s not something they have a stake in blindly defending because it hasn’t become an identity that they have embraced–an identity that is readily accepted and protected in society.

I already know that mothers experience a SUPREME love when they have children and that they would give their lives for their children–my problem is that most women DO give their lives for them, and not only is it encouraged, but it is often expected and admired. It’s designed to be a cultural phenomenon in this man’s world. It’s a GOOD THING when a woman puts her life on hold? It’s a GOOD THING when her development is arrested in other aspects of her life? Almost all societies say YES! Most men are not raised this way or even think along those same lines.

What I am talking about is a shift in thinking. Perhaps it’s only possible to communicate it effectively to young women and girls…I’d just need to distract them from their baby dolls and kitchen sets long enough to bring them to the window and show them a different view.

***I am not discouraging motherhood. I just want more mothers to be safe, happy and healthy and fully realized as human beings.

It’s completely possible to adore one’s children and give them the world BUT STILL continue to follow personal goals and dreams AND to have a separate adult life which involves alone time and adult recreation. That’s not child neglect. It’s like there’s this perception in our society that if a woman is more than a mother WHILE she IS a mother than it is child-neglect or selfish. It’s pathetic.

Under the law, backed by the National Rifle Association, the 138,350 people with concealed-weapons permits in Arizona will be allowed to bring their guns into bars and restaurants that haven’t posted signs banning them.

Those carrying the weapons aren’t allowed to drink alcohol.

Love that show! My mom told me that when she worked at an office in the early 60’s she had to wear a dress but also that the men were allowed to smoke but the women were not! She said it was outrageous. She said I would have never been able to take it. LOL.
——–
I have mixed feeling about the show, I do watch it but it is so sexist and I end up yelling at the screen more than anything else.

Women had little choice back in those days, you wanted a job you had to go by the men’s freakin’ rulz since they did the hiring and firing!

The handsome asshole man that made me go home and change my nylons (they were not pantyhose then) touched my thigh when I gave him a disgusted look for sending me home. Gack, he is lucky he doesn’t run into me know! I am all grown up and don’t take anyone’s crap any more.

Kat,
Also, some men do feel this way. My husband gave up promotions over the years because he didn’t want to be away from his family. The time goes so fast and we had enough to get by so he also gave up some of his dreams for our son.
I know you’re complaint is that it is expected of women in our culture but many times, not always, the woman chooses this.

Has any other President and/or first lady of the United States spent taxpayer dollars to take an overseas jaunt to press for the Olympics to be hosted in a specific U.S. city? Shouldn’t that be the job of city and state elected officials? This week’s Copenhagen jaunt by BO, MO, Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (all of Illinois) to push for the 2016 Olympics to be hosted in Chicago is an outrageously inappropriate use of taxpayer funds, IMO. The real reasons for the jaunt seem rather obvious: 1)BO’s Presidency is going down in flames before even one year of his first term, and he desperately needs some kind of victory, particularly with his signature HC and Cap n Trade bills mired in bipartisan wrangling sure to end in failure; 2) BO and MO need to pay back the corrupt Chicago pay-to-play pols for their help getting them into the WH; 3) the games would be held in 2016, thus ensuring both MO and BO their continued lavish livelihoods in the interim (even if they’re ousted from the WH in 2012 or before). I’m planning to e-mail my Congress critters as well as the Congressional Budget office in protest of the inappropriate use of taxpayer funds for this jaunt. (Also, apparently, the IOC will vote on Fri. Hillbuzz has had a couple of interesting posts up on this, including today’s post, which includes e-mail addys for those interested in e-mailing the IOC in support of Rio hosting the games instead of Chicago.) ‘Night PUMAs. Thanks.

Yes, I do think some fathers miss out on things (like promotions, personal purchases, friend time, etc).

It’s just that I don’t think most (not all) fathers worry about maintaining all the little things in life or feel guilty being at work or enjoying a beer with friends or going for a walk or drive to be alone…or innocently flirting, etc.

It’s the little everyday stresses that build overtime that are the sorts of stresses that can cause nervous breakdowns, depression and heart attacks, etc. Most fathers are just not worried about as many little and big things as mothers are…and most fathers/ men do not seem to identify with cleaning or cooking as an act of love and generosity OR as a tool to judge one’s competence as a man/ husband/ father.

I think a lot of men were raised by mothers who did a lot of the cooking and cleaning for them…beyond childhood norms. Then men expect their wives to be the same way or it’s unnatural for them to take on these other aspects and it makes them inadequate and dependent on woman. This is where the lazy/ selfish husband jokes are at.

I’m just convinced that I cannot depend on a man to be the equal partner when it comes to parenthood, and even if he was, I would need more help than that in order to be okay as a mother. I’d have to build a network of friends and extended family in the community so I can have separation and freedom from the home and less of a burden in general when it comes motherhood. That doesn’t take money, it’s a different kind of resourcefulness that most women don’t immediately see as needful because they are expected to do it all on their own.

214

Zee 09.30.09 at 2:34 am

I’m not going to enter on any conversation about some ideal “I will do this and not this” with someone who has NO clue because she…well, has no clue what it takes to have kids.

It’s my turn to smirk and sit back and know that my ignored warning will HAUNT the ideal young woman later on.

When one had all the same arguments ages ago and ignored all the older women’s warning ages ago, all I have to do is SNORT at the imagined ideal “resourcefulness” of some one who thinks she knows better.

Well…maybe when I get past perimenopause I will be more tender-hearted, but that may be a long shot when it comes to hot shots who think they know better than their dumb elders, hmmmmm?

215

Zee 09.30.09 at 2:46 am

Sorry, others, that I dropped offscreen. After my weird encounter with the Russian drug mafia the other night (my guess) I’ve been a bit jumpy, so when I heard a car idling in the wee hours I ran outside to stare the occupants down. Haha…it turned out to be young men I knew, friends of my son! We got to talking so I was afk a lot longer than expected. One was taking up music so we rummaged in the basement for an extra keyboard we had lying around. Then we commiserated on how impossible my son is…worse than the least anchored idealist here!!!

Interesting, tho…he was idealistic and philosophical since he was a tot.
No clue where that came from…he got the clutter bug from me, tho.

Zee,

#215 – glad to know your encounter tonight was much safer… :)

217

kat in your hat 09.30.09 at 3:22 am

Zee,

Maybe I will just sit back and smirk because I know that I will consciously work hard to never allow myself to be bottom of the barrel–for a man–for a kid–for anyone. It takes immense effort to curb that because that is how society molds girls and women. I think ANYONE arguing AGAINST girls and women putting themselves high on the priority list is AGAINST girls and women.

You tell me I have NO clue…how’s this. YOU have no clue what it’s like to be my age in 2009. Many young women are different now, thanks in large part to our elder women! Yes, and thank you. There is a difference, and much of that difference involves progress.

I’m NOT IGNORING all the older women’s warnings. That’s the entire point! I see all the red flags and I know the stories. I’ve been there with the women.

You think it’s just about some hotshot who thinks she knows better than her elders. Here’s some news: I respect my elders, but I ALSO know that I DO KNOW MORE than some of them. Old doesn’t mean right. A stupid asshole 25 year old man will probably be a stupid asshole 65 year old man.

I will NEVER tell a young woman or girl that she shouldn’t or won’t be able to put herself high on the priority list.

It’s dawning on me that this is something that probably has to be taught to girls when they are very young, and most of them probably need to witness a mother who is like this in order to emulate it.

An example of what I am talking about is (at the very least): a day/ night out once a week for mom, either alone or with friends or to date–whatever she needs. I’m talking about allotted time for mom to enjoy her personal hobbies or whatever personal “work” she needs for the soul. I’m talking about allotted time for mom to maintain self/ meditate/ beautify/ journal/ exercise, etc etc etc whatever. There are ways to save time and there are ways to make it happen.

If I become a mother, I WILL have one day and night to myself. A DAY OFF. FOR ME. At least. You know how? I’m going to have people HELP ME. I’m going to build a support system–a network. My mother did it and so can I.

218

kat in your hat 09.30.09 at 4:05 am

I’m thinking about these imaginary kids I might have. Yep, they will probably yell at me and not follow my rules, etc. I just don’t ever want my kid say, “Mom: get a LIFE” and for it to ring as totally accurate and true.

What am I supposed to do? If I get married and have children then I can’t/ shouldn’t look out for myself? Kids move out or husband croaks/ leaves and then I gotta start from SCRATCH? Why would I set myself up for that?

What is this? Who is telling me to not put myself high on the priority list? Then I neglect myself and become unhealthy, haggard, frazzled, anxious, depressed and isolated. Then I transmit all this stress to my family, making it a miserable home. Then my kids get depressed and resent me, and the husband feels the same way while he fantasizes about all the non-stressed out fun and exciting women who seem so confident, interesting and free. Meanwhile, I continue to waste away and forget my dreams? Sounds like a nightmare.

219

scarlet 09.30.09 at 4:50 am

Kat – I had four children and I still agree with all you have said today. Keep your ideals. I did and it worked well for me. Plus, I admire you.

Kat,
You can do it I know you can! Never be hoodwinked into the life you will resent. Stick to your plan and find a special partner who wants the same things you do, that is the first big step. It is THE most important one! Good luck. No one does anything alone, Murphy said that!

225

sheila7 09.30.09 at 9:09 am

Kat,
Just to be clear. I would never tell anyone not to put themselves high on their priority list. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with your ideas. All I was saying was my ideas changed after I became a mother. Wasn’t saying yours would, just that mine did and that sometimes what is perceived as not putting yourself first isn’t really an accurate assessment.
You can bet that I would lay down my life for my child and I don’t believe that is because of my culture.
Also, my husband is an equal partner in many ways, however, I do more around my house and for my son because I do it better than he does and I want it done right. But, that is my choice and so for that I am fortunate.

Anyway, I just didn’t want you to think I was disrespecting your ideas, I’m not, I just wanted to express that there is another side to it.
Have a great day. :)

Interesting article from Sweetness and Light blog. Shall we in our country celebrate communism?

Empire building to turn red and yellow on China’s 60th
September 28, 2009

New York’s iconic Empire State Building will light up red and yellow on Wednesday in honor of the 60th anniversary of People’s Republic China.

The Chinese consul, Peng Keyu, and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony which will bathe the skyscraper in the flag colors of China until Thursday, Empire State Building representatives said in a statement.

The upper sections of the building are regularly illuminated to mark special occasions, ranging from all blue to mark “Old Blue Eyes” Frank Sinatra’s death in 1998 to green for the annual Saint Patrick’s Day.

Nothing like celebrating the birth of the most murderous regime in recorded history.

Still, there is still hope that this report might be in error, or that the people running the Empire State building’s lights (it used to be Leona Helmsley) will come to their senses and change their minds.

Even though the Empire State Building now does go green each year for the Muslim holiday of Eid.

There was much talk about marriage in many of the posts above… how about this view of marriage from the UK?

UK: Muslim Forced Marriages up 80% – Parents Use “Bounty Hunters”
“Forced marriages up 80% in the UK. And as authorities grapple with how to deal with it, they fail abysmally. How can they confront a problem they are afraid to name? I mean, really.
Forced marriage cases up by 80pc this year as investigators find parents using ‘bounty hunters’ Telegraph hat tip Rodney

The number of forced marriages being investigated in Britain has risen by 80 per cent this year with parents using “bounty hunters” and bogus missing persons campaigns in a desperate bid to track down runaway children and make them wed.

A special Government unit dedicated to stopping teenagers being married off by their families dealt with 300 cases in the first half of this year, up from 168 in the same period of 2007.

But the head of the Forced Marriage Unit, based at the Foreign Office, fears this could be just the tip of the iceberg as many victims are too scared to come forward and communities often close up to hide what is going on.

Wayne Ives also warned that heads of families are going to extreme lengths to get their children to marry, in some instances posing as officials to kidnap runaway brides or paying people to track them down.

His comments came as a new law comes into effect next week, which will make it easier for courts to stop ceremonies going ahead if it is feared that the bride and groom are being married against their wills.

A separate law will see the minimum age at which foreigners can come to Britain to get married being increased.

Despite the drive to tackle forced marriages, however, many feel it is still taboo because of fears of criticising immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh, who are involved in most cases.

Schools have refused to discuss so-called honour crimes in case they cause offence to ethnic minorities or religions, while MPs have been accused of failing to highlight forced marriage in case they lose Muslim votes.

Sick.

In a recent speech to a Capita conference, Mr Ives told delegates: “We are talking about endemic abuse of the worst kind against young men and women which is happening right here and right now.”

He said the mere fact that a teenage girl is seen wearing a short skirt or having a boyfriend can be enough for her relatives to decide she has betrayed the family and must be forced to marry someone they deem acceptable, while others make disabled children get married so they can have a carer in a “warped form of altruism”.

In total, 90 per cent of cases dealt with in Britain involve Bangladeshi or Pakistani families, but investigators are uncovering growing numbers of forced marriages involving Iranians, Turks, Kurds and Somalis.

Still can’t say …………Islam.
Thanks to increased awareness, the Forced Marriage Unit has had 1,200 inquiries this year, 300 of which are being investigated as possible cases.

But Mr Ives warned: “What we’ve seen is the tip of the iceberg.”

[...]
In addition, on Nov 27 the minimum age at which foreigners can come to Britain to get married will rise from 18 to 21 before a marriage visa can be granted.

Mr Ives went on to describe the lengths some families will go to in order to track down those who they want to be married.

“Two uncles managed to dress up as airport officials and tried to arrest a girl when she arrived in Pakistan.

“I think it does take a village and that’s the best way,”

I was going to post this but I knew you knew that. I with a young family in the 60ties found that to be true…we had a village so to speak, a neighorhood of young families. All in the same boat( making do with one paycheck) helping with the care of children..could call on a neighbor in an emergency.
Playmates galore and Mothers home to keep an eye on all of them, friends going out in the evenings (all women) to escape, shop, bowl, night classes. I was sometimes numb with boredom…I did break the norm here when my last child got on the school bus (well part time before that) I got a job. I was the only one to work full time in my neighborhood b/c I wanted the freedom of my time, my money and a car! That’s my story and so much different than yours Kat you have many more choices and live in a different world.

244

BigCatLover 09.30.09 at 11:08 am

I’m going to weigh in on the same story as HP only not as happy. I was a young mother in the 60ies (who was told by my boss I had to leave my job when I got pregnant) but did not have the support of meighbors even though our area was pretty much all young families. I found too many of my neighbors competitive and jealous (don’t know why, we didn’t have any more than they did, but I suspect many were unhappy with their lives). Anyhow it was lonely and extremely boring. I also got a parttime job which set me apart form all the neighbors and family members who thought it was shocking (really). I’m so glad times are different now, but I’m afraid not understanding where we came from can be dangerous. Women are free to work now because their paycheck is wanted to keep the economy moving and I suspect they don’t really get the respect they think they do, so they must continue to demand respect for their own choices.

VAWA and the DOJ site is were info is contained.

I do have a copy of legislation that has been written by New York Representative Patricia Eddington to make DV a hate crime in the state of New York. This is to my knowledge the only bill written on a state level making domestic violence equal to hate crimes with stiffer penalties.
It is 3 pages and it is the first, I think draft.

Hi PUMAs, one and all! Prplvette, fyi in case it might be helpful for Roxie’s required surgery, just wanted to say that I used a company called CareCredit to finance my black lab’s surgeries during his cancer treatment. (It is/was a branch of GE Capital. Don’t know whether it still exists, but it offered fairly good terms a few years ago. It was also possible to use the card for ‘people’ dental and other healthcare!) Might be worth looking into. Sending good thoughts.

FLBarbara — I would be interested in reading Eddington’s proposed legislation to make DV a hate crime.

Good thoughts to all, especially those having tough times.

Houston Woman Fries and Eats Pet Goldfish After Fight With Husband

excerpt:

… the two argued earlier about some jewelry the man had given her but took back. She wanted the jewelry returned.

Officers who were dispatched to the woman’s home arrived to find four fried goldfish on a plate. The woman said she already ate the other three.

Group Tied to Obama Urges Tax Increase

In a draft report, the Center for American Progress says the size of projected budget gaps requires considering options including tax increases as well as curbs on annual spending and entitlement programs supported by Democrats.

Such ideas could pose problems for Mr. Obama, who pledged during the campaign to not increase taxes on families making less than $250,000. The report, which will be released on Wednesday, said the administration can’t rely on taxing richer Americans and companies to reduce the deficit to sustainable levels by 2014 because those groups would see 40% tax increases.

Harry Reid cuts Medicaid deal for Nevada

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid secured a deal today that would give Nevada full, 100 percent funding in the Senate health care bill for an initial expansion of Medicaid.

The agreement reached with the committee chairman comes after Reid vowed last week to strike a better deal for Nevada before bringing any legislation to the floor.

Reid took heat from Republican Rep. Nathan Deal of Georgia who bemoaned the majority leader’s powerful reach into Senate negotiations to improve the bill for Nevada.

Polanski’s defenders lose sight of the true victim

… I wish the renowned legal scholars Harvey Weinstein and Debra Winger, to name just two of Polanski’s defenders, were here with me now. I’d like to invite Martin Scorsese, as well, along with David Lynch, who have put their names on a petition calling for Polanski to be freed immediately.

To hear these people tell it, you’d think Polanski was the victim rather than the teenager.

And then there’s Woody Allen, who has signed the petition too.

The Zurich Film Festival has been “unfairly exploited” by Polanski’s arrest, Winger said. Thanks, Deb. And so sorry the film festival was inconvenienced by the arrest of a man who left the United States to avoid sentencing for forcing himself on a child.

Weinstein, meanwhile, issued an open letter urging “every U.S. filmmaker to lobby against any move to bring Polanski back to the U.S.,” arguing that “whatever you think of the so-called crime, Polanski has served his time.”

Roman the Rapist

Susan Estrich

Roman Polanski was on his way to a film festival in which he was to be honored for his life’s work when he was arrested last weekend. Some 100 European big shots have released a statement in protest: “Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.”

I’ve got news for the big shots: International cultural events are not safe havens for criminals, nor is there any reason they should be. A criminal is a criminal, even if he is “one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers.” There’s nothing “inadmissible” about it, guys.

The fact that he got away with it this long is not a reason to declare him innocent. He is a guilty man who fled from justice. It is time, past time, that he was returned.

Brazil reports Daley to the IOC Ethics commission

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – The race to win the right to host the 2016 Olympics became increasingly bitter here on Tuesday as Rio de Janeiro went on the attack against bookmakers’ favourites Chicago.

Rio – bidding to become the first South American city to host the Games – lodged an official complaint with the International Olympic Committee’s Ethics Commission about a remark made by Chicago Mayor Richard M Daley which they took as a criticism of their bid – something that is not allowed under IOC rules.

* Powerful women line up for AG Martha Coakley

High in the seats at last year’s Democratic National Convention, Attorney General Martha Coakley rose to register her vote for Hillary Clinton. The vote carried no mathematical weight – Barack Obama had already secured the nomination – but was a symbolic show of support for the woman who had come closest to the presidency.

Coakley, now trying to become the first woman to serve as US senator from Massachusetts, is tapping many of the same supporters, including a coterie of powerful women who backed Clinton in 2008.

Note from one of my Senators today…hey..at least he is trying to do something…conservative as he is…
…Today California Senator Barbara Boxer and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry introduced sweeping new taxes on energy consumption in the United States. The proposal has often been called “Cap and Trade,” but it’s more appropriately titled “Cap and Tax.”

Economists across the political spectrum have made clear that a cap-and-trade scheme would wreak economic havoc across this nation. And for a state like Louisiana, with our strong manufacturing base and significant domestic energy production, the proposal is particularly damaging.

The Heritage Foundation estimates that by 2012, the legislation would result in 1.9 million fewer American jobs. Louisiana can expect to lose nearly 32,000 jobs. And by 2035, national net job losses would approach 2.5 million.

The same study estimates that in the way of energy costs, the typical family of four will pay an extra $426 in energy costs by 2012. By 2035, that same family will pay an additional $1,241 in energy costs. The legislation would cause a 58 percent increase in gas and a 90 percent increase in electricity prices. And by 2035, the legislation will have added $5 trillion to the national debt, even as the federal government collects $5.7 trillion in revenues by auctioning credits.

I will adamantly oppose this Cap and Tax proposal and its damaging impact on Louisiana families and our economy. In the words of Democratic Congressman John Dingell, “cap-and-trade is a tax…and it’s a great big one.”

Sincerely,

David Vitter
U.S. Senator

Geez we really have come a long way in the last 30 years, all this talk about violence against women, what constitutes rape ie when a woman says NO or a woman is passed out and unable to speak the word NO, you know NO consent given and here we are 30 years later still talking about was it rape? It was “rape” then but now its considered “FUN” Cut the guy some slack he is a great director. Crap
So Polanski pleaded guilty and was sentenced and 30 years later “his crime is not considered a crime” and “he served his sentence”. Wow not sure of any sentence that sends a criminal to live in France,or how anyone believes living in France is “punishment” France is beautiful, but Ok that’s me.

I guess we just have to open the prisons and send all those convicted of rape to France for 30 years of punishment, and WE get to start all over.
Read MY lips, rape is when..I will speak slowly…a woman says NO.

LATEST E FROM OBAMA

scarlett –

The cavalry is here — and they’re in white coats and scrubs: More than a half a million doctors and millions of nurses are joining forces to help pass real health reform.

Americans listen to their nurses and doctors when it comes to health reform — and for good reason. If we can help them amplify their voices, it’ll be a huge boost to our campaign for change.

So we’re working on a new television ad featuring their voices explaining why doctors and nurses so strongly support President Obama’s plan — and asking Congress to pass it. We’ll run the ad in key states and districts all around the country to show folks where health professionals stand, cut through the spin, and build even greater support for reform.

But to produce and air the new ad before the Senate starts debating a final bill, we’ll need to raise $300,000 by Thursday. Please donate $5 right away.

The American Medical Association, Doctors for America, and a dozen other physicians groups representing 500,000 doctors are endorsing reform. So are the American Nurses Association and other organizations representing millions of nurses.

They’re speaking out because they see the shortcomings of our health care system firsthand, every day: patients denied the care they prescribe, families losing access to their doctors, and a system that forces them to spend more time with paperwork and less time with patients.

These voices need to be heard — with so much deception out there clouding the debate, it’s critical that medical professionals are able to focus the country on the simple fact that health reform is good medicine.

But the final congressional committee could vote on their reform bill as early as Wednesday — and debate on final legislation could start by the end of the week. So if we’re going to help make these doctors and nurses’ voices heard, we’ll need to do it right now. Can you chip in $5 or more to help get our ad on the air?

Michelle Obama arrives in Copenhagen for IOC vote

By NANCY ARMOUR (AP) – 2 hours ago
COPENHAGEN — Michelle Obama says the Olympics have the power to transform the lives of children in Chicago and around the country, inspiring them to be the next David Robinson, Nadia Comaneci.

Maybe even the next Barack Obama.

The first lady has wrapped up her first day in Copenhagen with a rousing speech to supporters of Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Games. The next 48 hours are crucial, she says, “like a campaign.” She is meeting International Olympic Committee members, hoping to show them Chicago has the passion to host the Summer Games.

Public Service Announcement

via Violet Sox.

How American taxpayer dollars are being used to fund our Afghan enemies

Forget opium poppies for a moment. The Taliban has another huge source of revenue, worth up to $1 billion a year, which generously supplements its heroin-trafficking income and the cash-flow from rich oil sheiks in the Persian Gulf.

This money comes from you.

The Pentagon did not respond to TAC’s inquiries about charges that local contractors who deliver supplies and equipment to remote NATO bases in Afghanistan are charging Western governments “protection money” to pay off the Taliban, or Taliban-connected middlemen, to protect convoys along dangerous overland supply routes. Yet a growing consensus supports a fearsome prospect: U.S. taxpayers are funding the enemy.

“If you don’t pay, you will get attacked, you will not get through,” says Peter Jouvenal, a British expat and former BBC journalist who has been living and working in Kabul for nearly 30 years. He has operated several businesses in Afghanistan, including a small trucking company. “Everybody wins in the short-term,” he tells TAC. “The Taliban get their money, and the contractors get their money, and the soldiers get their food and fuel supplies. The only one that loses out is the United States taxpayer, who has to foot the bill for all this. That would be acceptable if we were achieving something, but we’re not.”

We deploy more troops, who need more supplies, more fuel, more shelter, which in turn provide more targets for extortion and more revenue for the insurgency.

Senators turn back ID requirement for immigrant healthcare
By Jeffrey Young – 09/30/09 01:03 PM ET
Senate Finance Committee Democrats rejected a proposed a requirement that immigrants prove their identity with photo identification when signing up for federal healthcare programs.

Grassley’s amendment was beaten back 10-13 on a party-line vote.

The bill, authored by committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), would require applicants to verify their names, places of birth and Social Security numbers.

But the would not require them to show a photo ID, such as a drivers license.
