Yemeni girl, 12, dies in painful childbirth

AMMAN, Jordan (CNN) — A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, died during a painful childbirth that also killed her baby, a children’s rights group said Monday.

Fawziya Ammodi struggled for three days in labor, before dying of severe bleeding at a hospital on Friday, said the Seyaj Organization for the Protection of Children.

“Although the cause of her death was lack of medical care, the real case was the lack of education in Yemen and the fact that child marriages keep happening,” said Seyaj President Ahmed al-Qureshi.

Born into an impoverished family in Hodeidah, Fawziya was forced to drop out of school and married off to a 24-year-old man last year, al-Qureshi said.”

Hubby and I were at the rally on Saturday. I am still seething with anger at the way the event was treated by the media.

We were on one of four buses that brought us to DC from the L.I. town in which I live. We sat on the bus for four to five hours each way on this trip.

As we arrived in DC I was so very happy to see the crowds. More and more people arrived on the scene as their buses came in from various places.

I’ve never seen such an enormous group of protesters. We set a record in being the largest protest rally in the history of counting by the Park Police. The Metropolitan Police of DC estimated the crowd at 2.2 million! Wow!

You can imagine how quickly by happiness turned into disappointment, frustration and anger, as I watched the reports on TV. The media is obviously trying to play it down.

Well, they can all try to pretend that we weren’t there, but we were.

And we are not going away!

Apparently, this organization is trying to get the word out to try to stop the child marriages that often lead to little girls’ beating, rape and death.
