Back In the Saddle Sunday

I watched Michelle Obama on TV yesterday where she sat in the front row of Mission Church. I thought that she looked ridiculous with here stupid, huge, black bow but cautioned myself to be careful not to judge her clothes. I though that we do not do that to men and therefore we should not do it to women.

Then I thought again and said that men wear black suits, white shirts and ties. They wear the uniform of power, dignity, seriousness and focus. Women wear other things. There is nothing serious about 5 inch heels or thigh high skirts. All of the Kennedy women that I saw were in the same black uniform as the men.

Michelle Obama wore a dress that drew attention to her at a time when that was entirely inappropriate. Her clothes were not the focus of that funeral or any other funeral and her clothes should express that. She did the same thing at the ceremony in France at Normandy.

I hate her taste in clothes but that is entirely uninteresting. It is her inability to allow anything but her own ego and arrogance to be the focus of every action that drives me crazy and frees me to be able to criticize her.

They have already taken down the video of Michelle falling asleep.

Someone at Hillbuzz posted a pic of Michelle with her eyes closed, but didn’t notice that Hillary had apparently passed out for a moment, too!

Cuba faces toilet paper shortage

There’s good news and bad news in Cuba.

The bad news: There’s a shortage of toilet paper, and officials in Havana say it will not ease until the end of the year.

The good news: Day-old copies of the Communist party’s newspaper Granma, a traditional substitute, are available for less than a U.S. penny. And that’s six to eight full, if rough, pages per day.

Cuban officials say the shortage is the result of the global financial crisis and three devastating hurricanes last summer, which forced cuts in imports as well as domestic production because of reductions in electricity and imports of raw materials.

But CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria says that “at the bottom of this toilet paper shortage is Cuba’s continuing commitment to its bizarro world of socialist economics.”

“Cuba’s disastrous economy would be a joke were it not for the poverty it has perpetuated among millions of Cubans,” Zakaria said in a video commentary posted last week. “The whole country is stagnating. Fifty percent of its arable fields are going unfarmed. First and second year college students work one month out of the year in agriculture.”

I think Michelle Obama was born with a face that doesn’t look neutral or cheery when she isn’t actually emoting, when her face is just relaxed. I don’t see that as her fault at all. I also think she’s quite lovely when she smiles.

Perse- my partner’s mother has Parkinsons here and can’t get any of the non fda approved treatments that have been sooooo effective in their use in other countries . Her aunt is in Cuba with the same disease and getting all of the latest treatments and doing outstanding .

And the US has a shortage of doctors and nurses. Both hospitals in my community are importing RN’s from the Philippines and doctors from wherever the hell they can get them–Taiwan, Mexico, Trinidad, you name it.

Cuba, on the other hand, has neighborhood clinics staffed by MD’s and RN’s that get to know their patients on a personal basis and make house calls. Kind of like, you know, American doctors used to when they were professional medics instead of retailers for the insurance company wholesalers, shoving consumers/human units along their assembly lines.

Somehow a shortage of toilet paper doesn’t seem quite as serious as a lack of medical professionals or a lack of thorough medical attention in a 5-minute appointment.

I wanted to comment right away after reading Murphy’s post w/o reading the other comments on what Michelle’s clothing choices might signal. My aplogies if someone has already made this connection. For those of us who were around as young adults during the Kennedy heyday, it was Joan Kennedy’s wardrobe that first exposed her alcoholism and unhappiness as Ted Kennedy’s wife. She appeared in public in inappropriate clothes including attending a luncheon by the President’s wife (I think it was Lady Bird Johnson) in a see through blouse. When asked about it afterwards, she said she hadn’t given it a thought, she just pulled it out of her closet and put it on. After that her alcohol problem became fair game for the press. Michelle’s clothes may or may not be her declaration of dissatifaction with her role as silent first lady.

When physicians in other countries come to the United States, they often become nurses or lab technicians, rather than re-taking rigorous board exams to remain doctors.

One example includes doctors from Cuba. According to this story in The New York Times, “6,000 medical professionals, many of them physicians, have left Cuba in the last six years.” Cuban doctors, who often earn $25 per month, find it significantly more lucrative to practice as nurses in the United States.

On a related note, international medical professionals make up a significant part of the United States health care workforce. 25 percent of American doctors are trained overseas, and furthermore,….

I’ve received an email that taggles has annointed me as GabrielsFire. LOL LOL!!!

You know… I used to think widdershins was a small developing cohesive blog of likeminded left-leaning (they can’t even commit to “left”… which makes them what? Figure it out.)

But after the past few weeks, and a slew of morning email…
I’ve realized that they are a handful of tow-the-liners who chose to live in an ego stroking echo chamber of their own making. Their choice, their right. Can’t imagine why they would make it a public blog given that contruct. I realize they ban /moderate (responsibly?? pffft)/ censor in some fashion, any opinion, questioning, valid (ie NOT republican or rightwinger arguments) points that drift from the blog owners’ preconceived notions; they ridicule or minimize the actual point of a comment; use snark, condescension, assaultive comments, and ridicule by way of responses, never ever addressing the original point.

I don’t bring up that site or it’s comments unless they’ve insulted Puma PAC in their drive to undermine PUMA, which they have a tendency to do on their own as well as other blogs, even when their comments are unrelated to the topic at hand.
That’s when I comment, paste, or mention them. Why would I bother otherwise? Besides, if I wanted to stay current with their posts, all I have to do is go back several months through Murphy’s posts to read what has already been said and acted upon. Most of their brilliant cutting edge ideas have already been said, on Puma PAC, by Murphy, months and months ago.

Anyway, to all of those with a slightly different take, who believe in free speech within a few basic rules, who believe in democratic principles, who don’t lean left but are left, who hold to democratic principles regardless of the current configuration of the Democrepublic Party, and are banned or stuck in moderation, hang in there… most fascist sites outlive their usefulness extremely quickly.

I’m sorry. I said Ted corrupted the party with the caucus movement but I remembered poorly. It was Super Delegates that Teddy introduced to the DNC. He tried to use them to overide the will of the Carter voters.

Once they have done that, and i do believe, i might be naive, but if both parties would demand they work together and then

Yes, I agree with you sistermoon, bipartisan would be the answer to fixing the problems of our country. Actually, democratic socialism works quite well in Europe, and some experiments in that direction are going along quite nicely in Latin America.

Has it escaped you that the things you say you detest about Obama are almost if not all the result of his kowtowing to the Republican party and other rightwingers? Bailing out the banks with taxpayers’ money isn’t socialism–it’s robber baron crony capitalism. So is Obamacare, which shows no sign of improving anyone’s access to health care but does hold promise of ever-increasing profits for the insurance companies. Obama’s embrace of faith-based organizations is straight out of GW’s playbook. So is his continued support for torture, rendition, and the ramping up of the war in western Asia. So is his failure to address issues involving women’s and LGBT equality. So is his successful attempt to influence the press to present him in a perpetually golden light.

Or maybe I’ve mistunderstood. Maybe you actually like Obama’s Republican policies.

I believ you missed my point. I’ll try to be more clear.
When someone says “American first”, I seriously not sure what that means beyond citizenship and supporting the constitution.
My point is, there are as many ideas about what it means to be American, and which direction it should take, as there are Americans, from supporting open borders to closing them. From making het marriage the only kind of marriage allowed to working for equal rights for lesbians and gays. I was contrasting possible ideas as to which way America should direct itself. That’s the reason I never understand what anyone means when they use the term “patriot” or “American”.

Ohhio ratified ERA and has a couple, but not many women in Congress. No Senators yet ever, but one is running in 2010. I’ve sent an email to DWP explaining about her and her drawbacks.

Here is an organization PUMAs may want to look into for help in identifying women running for office. They are concentrating on women aged 40 and under, running for state and local office, and they’re concentrating on six states: Texas, Virginia, New York, Arizona, Washington and Minnesota.

But their list of endorsed women candidates includes more than that…it includes national office, and they list other resources for women running beyond the scope of their own mission…and they are nonpartisan:

Frankly, I don’t care what party anyone is as long as they step up to the plate and work. This isn’t an idle blog that does nothing but yak and chat.

Personal feelings are left at the door when you go to work at a job and that should be done here to so we can get stuff done. If someone disagrees with you at work, do you go balistic and accuse them of attacking you? I don’t and I am only speaking for myself. If I did that everytime someone disagreed with me or had a different point of view I would have never learned anything new and never got my job done.
