Ted Kennedy is dead. If you are interested in reading eulogies and retrospectives, look HERE and HERE – and HERE. If you’ve moved on already, here’s a list of possible candidates to take his place. Guess which one I’ll be supporting and working for:
- Mike Capuano, Congressman from Somerville
- Barney Frank, Congressman from Newton
- * * * * Martha Coakley, MA Attorney General * * * *
- Steve Lynch, Congressman from Boston

Is there really a possibility that Barney Frank will run for Kennedy’s Senate seat?
That’s a darling outfit the girl is wearing in the photo above.

Teddy was the biggest loser of the three, John, Bobby, Teddy. He rode their coattails all the way. The deal breaker for me was when he visited Alaska on his poverty tour (originated by Bobby), witnessed the poverty and hunger, and initiated a food fight on the flight home.
Wouldn’t have occured to him to donate the food to the families he used as a photo op. Pigboy.

Byrd wants health bill renamed for Kennedy
Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the only senator to have served longer than the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), mourned his friend Wednesday, saying his “heart and soul weeps.”
Byrd said he hoped healthcare reform legislation in the Senate would be renamed in memoriam of Kennedy.
“I had hoped and prayed that this day would never come,” Byrd said in a statement. “My heart and soul weeps at the lost of my best friend in the Senate, my beloved friend, Ted Kennedy.”

Kennedy’s Death Spurs Calls to Pass Health Legislation
The death of Sen. Edward Kennedy quickly became a rallying cry for Congress to pass health care overhaul legislation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office sent an email to reporters at around 2:30 a.m. today, just hours after his death, calling for the passage of health care overhaul. “Ted Kennedy’s dream of quality health care for all Americans will be made real this year because of his leadership and his inspiration,” the statement read.
Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, also issued a statement this morning calling for the passage of health care overhaul. “Let us continue his cause,” Stern said. “Let us take action this year to pass health care reform. And let us continue to build Kennedy’s vision of America.”
South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, the House majority whip, said: “As we move forward with health reform legislation, his absence will be palpable. But let us use his inspirational words as our guide, to rise to our best ideals and finally provide decent quality health care to all Americans as a fundamental right, not a privilege.”
Kennedy, who spent the past year battling brain cancer, had frequently called health-care overhaul the “cause of my life.”

Bush 41 on Death of Kennedy, a Public Service Award Recipient
George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, released a statement early Wednesday morning on the death of Senator Edward Kennedy
“While we didn’t see eye-to-eye on many political issues through the years, I always respected his steadfast public service – so much so, in fact, that I invited him to my library in 2003 to receive the Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service,” President Bush said.
“Ted Kennedy was a seminal figure in the United States Senate – a leader who answered the call to duty for some 47 years, and whose death closes a remarkable chapter in that body’s history.”
Kennedy was the first American to receive the Bush Award. In November 2003, the Massachusetts Democrat received the honor from the former president at the Texas A&M-based library.
“We are not here to celebrate a partisan ideology,” Mr. Bush said that evening, “but rather, the steadfast public service of a seminal figure in the U.S. Senate, and by extension, his remarkable family.”
The senator had, just before the award’s presentation, levied criticism at the 43rd and then-current president, George W. Bush, the son of the first President Bush.
Bush 41, as he is often referred to now, would make light of the senator’s comments at the award’s presentation when he asked Kennedy, “Be nice to my son, will you?”

I was a very young Fitzgerald not yet married when John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected president of the usa.
I was always proud that there was a president with my family name.
Or that I had his name, whichever, and remember exactly where i was when word came he had been assinated.
I never really was that fond of Teddy, but he did things that made me feel that way, it was never anything personal, I just didnt like how he handled himself sometimes. But, that said, I lost my mother to a brain tumor and that is no fun for any member of any family, it’s very sad. I did though find it odd that he came to North Carolina for his brain surgery when I thought for sure they had the best medical care in Massachusetts.
I know Duke Medical is known world wide, no telling how many people from other countries go their as well.
But, i still remember his endorsement of Obama, and to this day wish he had just not done that, but that’s just me. I do think people tend to over exaggerate some people upon their deaths and I have no doubts in my mind that he was a friendly guy, hell, he’s irish…but, I also know we will never live the kind of extravagant life he got to live and when you think about it, he was blessed with fortune. I’ve often thought had i been born into fortune i too would have been able to do more, so you really have to respect people who have it all and yet choose to serve, well, i hope with an honest heart. Rest in peace Ted.

From sistermoon #48 link:
The “intersection between GE’s interests and the government’s actions” is plenty crowded. GE is betting on climate change legislation, high-speed rail funding, electric car subsidies, embryonic stem cell grants, expanded federal health care spending, subsidies for renewable energy, defense contracts and continued financial bailouts.

Howard Dean’s Town Hall: ‘Better Than Jerry Springer’
The meeting began with Moran telling the packed gym at South Lakes High School, “Dissent is as American as apple pie,” but reminding them that his staff had passed out copies of “Washington’s Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior” for a reason. “I respectfully ask we be as respectful and as civil as possible,” Moran said.
“God save America!” yelled one. “Shut up!” said another. “God save the Constitution!” screamed still another, followed by, “Shut up, you pig!”
“Obama Lies, Grandma Dies!” “Medicare for All!” A pink poster called out, “Obama Tell the Truth!” while hundreds of pre-printed placards from the pro-Obama group Organizing for America waved a different message: “Standing Together for Health Care Reform.”
Brad Tidwell, 22, leaned on crutches as he held a sign that read “Cripples Against Obamacare,” referring to the thick cast on his left foot.
“Mr. Potter,” draped in a white flag painted with a black gun and the words “Come and Take It,” …

EXCLUSIVE: House quietly gives ‘bonuses’ to top aides
Says student-loan subsidies needed in hiring market
A month after they voted to punish some corporate executives for taking hefty bonus payouts, members of the House of Representatives quietly gave their own staffers a new potential bonus by making even their top-earning aides eligible for taxpayer dollars to repay their student loans.
The change, which took effect in May, means House employees earning up to $168,411, or the top level, are now eligible for government-funded subsidies to help pay down their student loans.

Congressional Research Service: Illegal Aliens Can Receive Benefits Under House Health Care Bill
http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayReleaseContent.aspx?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/08-26-2009/0005083496&EDATE=
WASHINGTON, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Tuesday, the Congressional Research Service (CRS), the “research arm” for the United States Congress, issued a report validating an analysis by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), that illegal aliens would be able to receive benefits under the House health care reform bill, America’s Affordable Health Care Act of 2009 (H.R. 3200).
The report, Treatment of Noncitizens in H.R. 3200, states definitively, “H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on noncitizens – whether legally or illegally present, or in the United States temporarily or permanently – participating in the Exchange.”

I rather read about the good whales……much more intersting!
In New England and off the east coast of Long Island, the whale watching season typically takes place from about mid-spring through October, depending both on weather and precise location. It is here that the Northern Humpback Whale, Fin Whale, Minke Whale, and the very endangered/heavily protected North Atlantic Right Whale are often observed. For generations, areas like the Gulf of Maine and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (part of the inner waters formed by Cape Cod’s hooked shape) have been important feeding grounds for these species: to this day a very large portion of the waters off the Eastern Seaboard are rich in sand lance and other nutritious treats for mothers to teach their calves to feed on.
In the past this area was a whaling capital for the U.S. whaling industry, particularly Nantucket, an island just off the coast of Massachusetts. Though strict laws prohibit the molestation of these large wild mammals, it is not unknown for the whales to approach whale watching boats entirely on their own, particularly calves and juveniles who are naturally curious. In recent years it is also not uncommon from time to time to see these huge animals playing and feeding in harbors of large cities, including New York or Boston where fish species of interest to the whales have returned. Due to the frequent and increasing visits of these mammals, new laws have had to be enacted to ensure the safety of both boaters, commercial fishermen, and the whales themselves: off the coast of Boston, for example, cargo vessels must slow down considerably so as not to hurt the much slower North Atlantic Right Whale. A very large amount of research on large cetaceans takes place, in particular Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
In Canada, a popular whale-watching area is at Tadoussac, Quebec, where Beluga Whales favour the extreme depth and admixture of cold fresh water from the Saguenay River into the inland end of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. In addition, the Maritimes shares a population of humpbacks living in the Bay of Fundy with American populations further South during the summer feed and moving south and out to the ocean during the winter.

I’ve been watching Whale Wars every Friday night. The season just ended with the Australia police waiting at the dock when the Sea Shepherd docked. The Japanese whalers sicced them on the Sea Shepherd.
Know why the right whale got it’s name?
It was such a slow swimmer that the whalers considered it the right whale to hunt. Sad isn’t it.

Dominick Dunne Dies
By Dave Itzkoff
Dominick Dunne, the author and journalist who covered the trials of celebrity defendants like Claus von Bülow, O. J. Simpson and William Kennedy Smith, and wrote frequently on the intersection of high crimes and high society, has died. He was 83. His son Griffin Dunne told the Web site of Vanity Fair, where Mr. Dunne was a special correspondent, that he died of bladder cancer at his home in Manhattan.

Final ‘Cash for Clunker’ Data a Big Three Disappointment
The DOT released the final tally on the ‘cash for clunkers’ program today. Fortunately for dealers, the program came in under budget: 690,114 deals submitted by dealers totaling $2.877 billion. Congress had set aside $3 billion for the plan.
However, the final data is concerning for the big three automakers because their overall market share took a big dive. This decrease in market share is due to the fact most of the top selling cars were foreign, while most trade-ins were domestic. Detroit news reports:
General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC sold just 38.6 percent of the clunkers sales, far below the companies’ 45.1 percent share of July auto sales. Chrysler ended up with just 6.6 percent of sales, behind both Nissan Motor Co. at 8.7 percent and Hyundai Motor at 7.2 percent.
GM finished with 17.6 percent of clunkers sales, behind Toyota Motor Co. at 19.4 percent. Ford Motor Co. fell to 14.4 percent of total sales in the final tally, ahead of Honda Motor Co. with 13 percent.

The governor of Massachusetts is a tiny bit better than obama but just a tiny bit. When you start at the bottom, that step up is still way below the curb as in in the gutter. He announced today that if MA changes the law passed in 2005 to remove the power to appoint a senator if one dies he will sign that new law. Good lawd! That do this shit without red faced embarassment.
I would like to see a law passed that requires elected officials to wait until the party chooses a candidate before they can endorse one. I think that Murphy gets credit for this idea but it is a wonderful one.

Just a drive by, feeling funky today.
A year ago today in Denver I watched as the last ounce of respect for the Democratic party drained from my body. After a back door deal, they dragged Hillary out onto the convention floor and she handed what was rightfully hers to him, unqualified, inexperienced Him.
Sitting amongst the confetti and the balloons I felt what belonged to her and to to us was stolen.
I said to Nancy Pelosi” This is the day the Democratic party will live to regret” and I walked out and never looked back.
A year later it is not far from the truth.
Bars open and drinks are on me.

scarlet 08.26.09 at 7:52 pm
Senator Kennedy’s marriage was annulled after 11 years. I know a lot of Catholics who have had their marriages annulled and they didn’t have to pay anything.
Divorce is not a reason for excommunication from the Catholic church nor is remarriage after a divorce. Divorce does not affect one’s status in the Catholic Church. They remain full members and may continue to receive the Sacraments.

I received this from the Alice Paul Institute today . . .
Today we celebrate 89 years of women’s right to vote in the United States, and honor the brave women who fought almost one hundred years for a voice in the government. Beginning in January 1917, suffragists of the National Woman’s Party, led by Alice Paul, picketed the White House through the chill of winter and the heat of the summer. In June, groups of suffragists were arrested for the crime of “obstructing sidewalk traffic” and were sent to prisons and workhouses. 168 women went to jail between June and November, and endured hunger strikes and forced feedings daily. It was these efforts which led the passage of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920. And the struggle for equal rights continues to this day.
Please take a moment today to reflect on Alice Paul and all the women who continue the fight for women’s equality.
Happy Women’s Equality Day from the board and staff of the Alice Paul Institute!

O/T but important… here is a news story that won’t be covered by the MSM today… Luckily for “O” that the TK story is taking the headlines…
From the article:
“The real US unemployment rate is 16 percent if persons who have dropped out of the labor pool and those working less than they would like are counted, a Federal Reserve official said Wednesday.
“If one considers the people who would like a job but have stopped looking — so-called discouraged workers — and those who are working fewer hours than they want, the unemployment rate would move from the official 9.4 percent to 16 percent, said Atlanta Fed chief Dennis Lockhart.

Get your point, but it seems to me, the person in the relationship (male or female), vows or without vows, has the responsibility of protecting and respecting their relationship.

I am game for whale watching anytime anyplace anywhere! I have not seen the Fundy Humpbacks in a while, though who is to say they are not hanging down here on Stellwagen Bank too! There are some frisky whales out there – they come to the boat and interact with the people who are loud and excited, the whales spy hop and slap and appear to get a kick out of performing and the crowd reaction to it. Though my last trip, a Humpback got much too close for comfort, it went from exciting to scary, and then to hilarious, in a rapid sequence. The most common phrase heard, by all sexes, ages etc was “Oh My &od!!!” over and over.
11 years ago I ran away from home chase whales in the North Atlantic, and these wondrous creatures are becoming my escape possibly. Mostly though, they have me on my toes, trying to figure out if they are trying to communicate with us, and if so, what are they communicating? When a whale pops up within a few feet of you, and regards you with its eye in which you can see great intelligence you get this lump in your belly that does not go away. Watch this film of a Humpback-people interaction. I think I have met up with this particular whale before. But it might be as simple as being habit shared amongst the whales.
Enjoy

a long time ago, I got a tiny zen garden for my desk for Holiday gift. It was a little “litterbox” that came with a tiny rake and a little bag of sand. You rake little patterns in the sand like the japanese gardeners do. I have not seen many of those since moving away from California, so I settled for a tiny one. It was an amusing distraction when occupied with a long boring conference call.

Hey Dances, now that you have filled in the details, it sounds nice, like a Zen rock garden for your table!!!
I am still trying to find a Zen waterfall for my room, and a tiny one for my desk at work. When I was looking at some with my friend, he told me “aren’t you afraid the tinkling water will make you need to pee a lot more???”
—————–
They had another in with black river stones. (I know, I exaggerated. It just seemed such a weird thing for me to do.)
Yeah, I can’t stand the people who comment on pee-ing. Besides, you can rearrange the rocks or pump to get the sound you desire.
I think you should make your own. Theyre easy enough to make.

Well, I will give my 2 cents on the Kennedy’s…. Life and what ONE accomplishes is earned! NOT, Just because of a family name….No…. Zero….. What (HE) yes, Ted did to Hillary is unforgetable!!!!!!! What a piece of shit! He (Ted) sold his soul to the devil for political gain…. He Screwed all the American People and what they stand for…. After-all, Hillary Won the Popular Vote……. Oh, isn’t that what we call Democratic Process!…. I hope he rotts in Hell……
Yes, I am a little frustrated tonight…. After, being with the slime bags (Rep) party for most of the day….. Fighting HR 3200…. I have a meeting with Ken Calvert on Friday…… This HR bill MUST not pass…. Yes, we are all in agreement with the need to change the way Health Care is in America…. But, we DO NOT NEED THE GOVERNMENT RUNNING OUR HEALTH CARE….. Those slimy pieces of crap who call themselves Dems are already feeding off of TK Death and he isn’t even buried Yet….. UGH!!!!!

clintondemocrat 08.27.09 at 12:00 am
wow, there’s a lot going on in here tonight. Casper cat, I’m just going to ask you how is SCHIP going? How is Medicare going?
I believe we needed to start with single payer and move from there rather than starting basically from a Republican point of view.
ANYWAY, I’m sad tonight because I believe with every fiber of my being that Hillary left the Senate because Ted wouldn’t allow her to chair a subcommittee for healthcare reform under the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee. I feel very very sad that exactly one year to the week of the convention, that this woman could have so quickly become the next generation of the “liberal lion” and we will never have that.
I don’t think Kennedy chose Obama over political gain because what did he gain? I believe it was absolutely about legacy. The news people are all talking about how he is and was king maker and that he as king maker made Obama. That is what it was about, legacy.
I’m very sad that my party farted around and couldn’t and still doesn’t have a bill. I wish Ted could have voted on that bill.
so, I’m very conflicted tonight…

They really expressed what we were all thinking. They nailed it.
I read an article that if he had only not killed Mary Jo he would have been president. Darn, I really wanted a murderer for president. He didn’t even have the effing decency to report the accident until the next day.
DancesWithPumas 08.27.09 at 12:33 am
There was something about his blood alcohol level and how he had to sober up before reporting.
DancesWithPumas 08.27.09 at 12:34 am
Then again, he could have been drunk AND in shock? or maybe he had an alcohol induced blackout?

How did he get home? He was Ted Kennedy even if he was drunk he would have gotten away with. Why not worry about Mary Jo? It says a lot about the man.

A Pocket Projector to Make Any Surface a Silver Screen
By BOB TEDESCHI
“Backwoods camping is great fun for those who don’t mind living in their own sweat for a few days or battling swarms of gnats. For others, the experience may pass muster only if it includes some home-style amenities like, say, a big-screen TV.
Well, it can, with the newest blow-away-your-friends devices: microprojectors (also known as pico projectors). These pocket-size gadgets take video on an iPhone (or a handful of other smartphones) and play it on any surface, turning your wall, ceiling or tent into a 60-inch screen.
The projectors first hit the market last year, with the debut of the Optoma Pico, which made a bit of a splash with the tech community. Now two competing models have been announced: the Cinemin Swivel, by WowWee Technologies ($350, at Cinemin.tv, starting in September) and the 3M MPro120 ($349 at shop3m.com, starting Sept. 1).”

Many pumas have speculated for some time that some of the more outrageous ‘anti-healthcare’ protestors were Democratic plants who were operating under the guise of the Lunatic Right in order to implement Rule 13 of RfR- ” Pick the target , freeze it , personalize it and polarize it .”
Alinsky explains the effects of this action lie in the ” conviction that all the angels are on one side and all the devils on the other.”
Obama was successful in implementing this very basic tactic in the primaries (bumper sticker vandals in Fla. etc. etc.)
It would be very interesting to check the background of some of the RW protestors that keep appearing all over the country at various Town Halls to see which side is REALLY sending them on a cross country protest spree ..
Anyway , A Democratic operative got caught vandalizing the Colorado Dem. Headquarters ..
He wasn’t cought until AFTER the DNC had already pinned it on RW anti-healthcare nuts …
Wake up , folks – some people learned NOTHING from the primaries ….

Don’t know much about it, but I think Medicare is partially successful because recipients PAY for it. There are still problems with it, though, and I think we should have fined tuned/saved Medicare before jumping into a bigger challenge.
Children’s gov’t health care has been said to prove that parents will dump their own insurance to get the govt freeby.
I really don’t think we should try to “provide” insurance for everyone.

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08272009/postopinion/opedcolumnists/blinded_by_a_life_of_privilege_186623.htm?&page=1
excerpt:
Of course, Kennedy is now endlessly lauded for his support of “women’s rights,” i.e., abortion. But into the 1970s, before the Roman Catholic Church’s influence began to wane, he was a traditional, pro-life New England Democrat.
Here was his take on abortion in 1971: “Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized — the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old.”
There’s a story, perhaps apocryphal, that in his first Senate campaign in 1962, Kennedy was shaking hands at a factory gate during a shift change. A haggard worker began berating him about how he’d never worked a day in his life.
As the legend had it, at that point another salt-of-the-earth blue-collar type leaned in and told Kennedy, “Never worked a day in your life, kid? You ain’t missed a thing.”
But in fact he had. Yesterday, the tributes kept mentioning his commitment to the “working class.” He fought for, as President Obama said (on Martha’s Vineyard, of all places), “an America that is more equal and more just.”
But more equal and more just for some people than for others. When it came to the white-ethnic working class from which his father came, Kennedy just plain didn’t get it. Whether it was court-ordered busing in Boston in the ’70s, or the affirmative-action policies that stymied the careers of so many of his family’s traditional voters, Kennedy never grasped the depth of the blue-collar frustration as he veered left.

By the way-I appreciate your efforts as an insider. Maybe we could get some common sense coming out of the Dem Party? Some of my peeves:
1. I don’t want to cater to or give special treatment to insurance companies: stay out of the way of free markets (that’s consumers-us!)
2. I don’t want to create entitlements-we can’t afford it!
3.I don’t want gov’t controlling our health care decisions/options.
4. I DO want to know why and how health care is so expensive (honest answers) so we can fix the problems.

One day after the Herald reported some surprised Bay State inmates – including murderers and rapists – were cashing in $250 stimulus checks, federal officials revealed the same behind-bars bonus was mailed to nearly 4,000 cons nationwide.
A federal watchdog is now probing how the cons were cut the checks. The same cash also may have been sent to fugitive felons, people kicked out of the country and even individuals now deceased.

You and Michelle should be heart broken that old Teddy’s gone. Since you wouldn’t have gotten as far as you did in the primaries without his help and backroom politics with the good ole’ boy network. Please unsubscribe me from this drivel. Sincerely, an Ex Democrat.
Well, I actually think someone read this, because two minutes later, they send the same thing to me again. Just to piss me off I think. So, I unsubscribe again!
Also, read a poll this morning that said ObamaSun is loosing Independent support big time. They had all the excuses except for the correct one….he’s not Hillary.
