How Angry Are You?

by murphy on August 24, 2009

in Join us!, open thread, profound question of the day

These are useful psych tests — and NOT only for those of us quitting smoking. I took the Anger Test, the Coping, and the Type A Personality test. Veddy interesting. I’ll share my results in comments. You do the same!

Anger Score: 22

“Your overall anger score is low. This means that you are rather skilled at coping with potentially angering situations. There is also the possibility, however, that you are denying your real feelings of anger. The questions on this test dealt with some situations in which it is normal and understandable to feel angry. Your score indicates that you rarely felt anger, even in situations where most people would. On the one hand, this can be very positive – you may have reached a stage of enlightenment most of us never obtain – but there could be other reasons for your rather laid-back approach. Make sure that you are not bottling up your emotions and denying your true feelings, because this can be just as harmful as outright anger. Remember, it’s ok to feel angry sometimes, as long as you express it in a healthy way.”

Coping Score: 57

“You appear to have average coping skills. This means that you are not left completely defenseless when it comes to coping with stress. However, although you don’t crack under pressure, you may still become anxious, depressed or very nervous when things become difficult. Underdeveloped coping skills can make it more likely for you to give up without a fight, to feel overwhelmed and helpless and to perceive yourself as less in control over your life. Working on your coping skills could really help you get through tough times.”

Type A Result: 60

“You have many of the characteristics of a Type A Personality. Type A Personality is characterized by two main factors, Achievement Striving and Impatience-Irritability. Type A persons tend to measure their success in terms of how many or how much of everything they acquire. They are generally dissatisfied with the world, including themselves. They are quite rigid in thought and conduct and tend to distrust others. In addition, they experience difficulty expressing their emotions, are generally very critical of themselves and others, and are of increased vulnerability to the physical and emotional effects of stress. Persons displaying Type A behaviors do not know how and when to relax. They feel impatient with the pace of most events. They strive to do too much at once and others often get tense and feel threatened in their presence.”

zoinks. i have the achievement striving but i think i’m not too bad with impatience-irritability.

Coping Test,

Overall results
67

Your coping skills appear to be fairly good. This means that for the most part, you are able to deal efficiently with stressful situations. You rarely crack under pressure, and can find your way out from most precarious situations. You are not a victim of your environment and feel pretty much in control. Your coping skills will help you get through tough times in far better shape than those who do not use the same methods.

Repost from previous tread.

Hey Puma’s

Just checking in to let you know I was not abducted by Organize For America; at least not yet. I’ve been traveling and dealing with some family problems in between. I hope all of you are enjoying the final weeks of summer.
Stay off the cigs Murphy. I know you can do it!

Anger score 54
54
Your overall anger score appears to fall in the “normal” range. This means that you get angry in some situations but aren’t the type to blow up all the time. You seem to have struck a balance between accepting the occasional flash of temper and not letting yourself get overly worked up. You realize that sometimes, it’s just not worth the headache. This is generally a very healthy approach, as suppressing your anger or getting swept up in it are equally harmful to your health and your relationships.

Not bad! I thought I would be in the high 70’s lol

13

Juliette 08.24.09 at 10:06 pm

Oh and not to worry.
I’ve been keeping the phones ringing at Rep. Schwartz and Senators Casey and Spector’s offices when ever I am in town.

Type A Test
Overall results
41

You seem to fall somewhere in the middle between a Type A and Type B personality. Sometimes you are as laidback as a Type B; in other situations, you can be a high achiever or express impatience and hostility like a Type A. Either you adjust your behavior depending on the situation, or you tend to have a moderate attitude. In other words, you have some of the good and the bad associated with the Type A Personality. With a bit of drive, perfectionism and competitiveness to keep you going, you likely are able to achieve many of your goals in life without pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion. However, you also have some of the negative emotionality associated with the TABP as well – you may find that you become a bit hostile, impatient, or stressed in the face of obstacles and frustrations. Your moderate score however, means that you possess a healthy balance, so long as you keep your negative emotions in check.

Your overall anger score is rather high. You seem to get angry more often than the average individual does. Perhaps the scenarios on the test rubbed you the wrong way. Whatever the case, learning to control your anger would likely prove beneficial. Anger is a firecracker of an emotion, and can have serious repercussions on your health and relationships. Some things just aren’t worth getting worked up about!

Yes, goofsmom I have learned over the years “to let it go” I don’t harbor anger….. I really don’t…. And, it does take a lot to get me angry… It must be the Scropio in me… But, when or if that should occur…. Well, lets just say… It won’t happen again….! One of the problems I felt this test has is the test confuses Anger with Frustration…. Yes, we/do get frustrated…. But, that is not ANGER…. IMO ANGER is a whole different beast……

Impatience/Irritability
61
Your interactions with others and your day-to-day existence are heavily tinged with impatience and hostility. When you’re stressed or frustrated, you may lash out at others or end up stewing in anger or frustration. Your elevated score may put you at risk because a high amount of this aspect of the TABP can not only be extremely harmful to relationships, it is also very damaging to your health. While originally it was thought that global Type A Behavior Pattern was the culprit in coronary heart disease, research now shows that hostility, impatience and the other related traits are likely the real source of the problem. Based on your results here, you may be at an increased risk of heart disease. Keep in mind however, that there are other causes unrelated to the TABP, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and smoking, among other things.

Headclunker 08.24.09 at 10:44 pm

I scored a 52. But that was because they did not ask me any questions about the fraudulent usurper in the Whitehouse that is screwing up our screwed up country even more. We could have had real health care reform instead of pork.

In the state where I live, our obliging governor extended the “early voting” past the point that the registers could be updated accurately before the final vote, and BO took the state by a narrow margin. We did get a big piece of pork for our cooperation. The stimulus money that was allocated for Safe Drinking Water ended up being enough to cover about 10% of the Shovel Ready Projects.

How sorry is that? Can you get any more basic infrastructure than the drinking water systems? And the direct effect on public health.

Now I am mad.

You have many of the characteristics of a Type A Personality. They strive to do too much at once and others often get tense and feel threatened in their presence.

And why have we not seen this dream machine? I’ve always had Dodge Darts, but Corvaire is on the list, with some sort of ef-u to Nader as a bumpersticker.

PUMAs…too beat to take the test and post…3:30 am here and I have a lonnnng day moving the son back to college. We got started today, organizing! :) But alas, he won’t listen to mom regarding the purging possessions, alto he appreciated the organizing.

I’m not quitting smoking like others here, but I am working on not dragging more things home, whatever kind of addiction that is. I successfully ignored a cute tray, wine glasses and candle votive set out on the curb….but I did buy *two* packets of file folders because they now come in cute patterns. It would be one thing if I actually used them!!

2 bags of trash, 4 recycle, 3 boxes of givaways discarded so far from my attic….

A dent. A noticable dent. It should be noted I’ve cleared out the main floors of the house…only because I had an attic and basement. And now the real work begins…

106

Zee 08.25.09 at 3:53 am

omg, I lied thru my teeth…

I went and looked at the tests and took one because it said “abridged.”

The test are full of a foul waste substance.

I got like a 56, in the “normal” range for anger. This can’t be true. Plus, they conclude it won’t impact relationships. Hello. I rated overhearing a friend badmouthing me as “furious.” Just because I would not be angry at all with a dog peeing on my plants they come up with these bogus results?

Well, that’s my take…these are bogus….fun but bogus.

107

Zee 08.25.09 at 3:54 am

well, signing off for real now! :) no more tests!

108

kat in your hat 08.25.09 at 6:39 am

Anger Score: 42

Your overall anger score appears to fall in the “normal” range. This means that you get angry in some situations but aren’t the type to blow up all the time. You seem to have struck a balance between accepting the occasional flash of temper and not letting yourself get overly worked up. You realize that sometimes, it’s just not worth the headache. This is generally a very healthy approach, as suppressing your anger or getting swept up in it are equally harmful to your health and your relationships.

109

kat in your hat 08.25.09 at 6:40 am

Coping Skills: 80

Your coping skills appear to be excellent. This means that overall, you are able to deal quite efficiently with stressful situations. You don’t crack under pressure, and can find your way out from most precarious situations. You are not a victim of your environment and feel pretty much in control. Your coping skills will help you get through tough times in far better shape than those who do not use the same methods.

110

kat in your hat 08.25.09 at 6:42 am

Type A test: 32

You possess many of the characteristics of a Type B personality. Type B persons are characterized as having a “stop and smell the roses” attitude towards life. They are very relaxed and rarely become hostile, aggressive or competitive. Open-minded and forgiving, they are of a flexible nature. Type B persons tend to follow either an “Everybody Must Win” or “Live and Let Live” credo; they have a more passive and submissive slant to their personality. In either case, whether to fight a cause or simply stand up for themselves, Type B persons sometimes lack the drive that could help them achieve their goals. You yourself may want to work on building up some more initiative and dynamism. Otherwise, you run the risk of missing out on important opportunities. Pushing yourself and competing a little bit for your place in the sun can certainly add some spice to your life.

111

kat in your hat 08.25.09 at 6:45 am

Emotional IQ Test (For extra, but it took FOREVER)
Subscale IQ score = 135
Subscale percentile = 99

According to your self-report answers, your emotional intelligence is excellent. People who score like you do feel that they have almost no trouble understanding and dealing with their own emotions and those of others. They have an easy time overcoming difficulties in their lives and they are able to control their moods. It’s easy for them to motivate themselves to overcome obstacles and reach their goals. In addition, they find social interactions to be quite easy and fulfilling, for several reasons. They are comfortable allowing themselves to get close with others, and feel comfortable being vulnerable enough to establish intimacy. They also report having an easy time offering support to others; this is likely due to an empathetic nature and a clear mind when it comes to offering good advice.

112

Good Morning Murphy and Pumas!

Well Pumas…I fell off the ‘wagon’ yesterday morning…on my birthday!

I thought everything was going well…I don’t know where I went wrong.
I chewed the gum and kept a lollipop in my mouth almost all the time…tried to stay busy…
sure, I was a little spaced out, on edge and borderline cranky….but it was all good …until…

Yesterday Morning at 6:30 AM!!!!!!

I put put the coffee on as usual..sat down at my desk, turned my puter on and rocked back in my chair to take in the wonderful smell of fresh coffee brewing….

and then I went Bat Sh*t Crazy!!!!

I flew out of the house…flannel pj top and jeans…bedroom slippers..did not comb my hair…pulled it up in a ponytail.
I had very proudly informed my local convenience store.. days earlier that I was going to quit smoking and told them not to sell me any cigarettes if I came in and asked.
Well needless to say…they took one look at me and said NO No NO!!
My initial pleas quickly tuned into Growwwwwls and they gave in…

Sooooo here I am…back where I started:

TOMORROW is Women’s Equality Day!

Women’s Equality Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women’s Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day.

Joint Resolution of Congress, 1971 Designating August 26th of each year as Women’s Equality Day.

He’s reprinted excerpts of the thread from yesterday, very carefully edited to make it appear that the woman arrested for approaching Obama’s plane was indeed Cinie. You have to wonder what someone like this does for a life. Given that he’s a Brit, he’s probably not one of Obama’s paid bloggers, and he’s probably too far over the edge even if he were an American. Since he reads us faithfully, perhaps he could explain in his next post how he manages to type while wearing one of those jackets with the extra long sleeves.

Denis Hughes Named Chairman of New York Fed’s Board of Directors –
Interesting Denis Hughes is the head of the AFL CIO, 2.5 million union voters uhmm members.

Instead of a résumé filled with corporate or financial experience, as has been typical of his predecessors, Hughes is president of the New York State AFL-CIO. He succeeds Stephen Friedman, who resigned from the job in May after drawing criticism for his simultaneous service as a director of Goldman Sachs and for buying stock in the company even after it became regulated by the New York Fed.

Hi PUMAs. Seems a bit calmer here today, thank the goddess. Hope the smoking cessation drive is going well. My dad quit cold turkey a number of years ago after having been a chain smoker since I was very little. He quit because my mom and younger siblings found they were allergic to smoke (go figure…) Anyway, he began to feel and look muuuuccchhh better. I thank him for his determination and for his care/concern for mom and little bro. Also, I thank him because he is probably the reason I never even had a desire to smoke.

woot woot!!!!

…Today the lesson that President Barack Obama and the Democratic leadership in Congress take from [Bill Clinton's] 1994 defeat is that they need to avoid Mr. Clinton’s “mistakes.” Avoiding mistakes, however, is not a winning strategy. A far more productive strategy would be to embrace Mr. Clinton’s success, which was freeing himself from his party’s left and returning to the centrist themes he had campaigned on.

No doubt that would be a bitter pill for Mr. Obama, given how he has made health care his signature issue. Still, a wiser West Wing ought to have seen this train wreck coming. For months polls have shown a huge gap between the popularity of the president and the unpopularity of his policies. Sooner or later, one of these had to give.

Mr.Obama’s bet was that his personal popularity would be enough to push his agenda through….

Hey, Dances. Reprieve on the ‘life intervenes’ issues for now, so I’m baaaacccckkk…for now anyway. Yep, willing to take the ‘administrative lead,’ I guess (as much as I abhor labels of any kind…lol…) I’m not so great with spreadsheets, but I believe I can organize the needed info in such a way that it will be fairly easy for you to post. BTW, so far, I’m seeing that there’s still plenty of time for PUMAs (and any interested women) to get their sh– together in time to file for 2010 for state and congressional races. I would love to see a huge number of grassroots PUMAs/women running for offices all across the country. Time to reflect our 52 percent in elected offices everywhere. Maybe that could be the name of the “Vote for Women” page, “PUMA 52 Percent Solution.” Thanks Dances.

Thanks for the article, way. BO’s narcissism is his ‘tragic flaw,’ as we all know (“Mr.Obama’s bet was that his personal popularity would be enough to push his agenda through…”

IMO, however, if BO moved any further around the circle to the right (he was already so far left he was already right anyhow), he’d be meeting himself somewhere in the Middle East. ;-)

It’s been like this for at least four months straight now. Last night it went below 80 for a low of 79 for the first time since June. I’ve lived in South Texas almost all my life, and this is the worst it’s ever been. My mother’s standard for letting me play tennis during the summer when I was a teenager was a temperature of under 95–and I played a lot of tennis on July and August afternoons. I invite anyone who doesn’t believe in global warming to venture down to this corner of the globe and be convinced. I keep hoping we’ll get the edge of hurricane this season; we’re also classified as a region of “extreme” drought, while areas of central Texas are even worse, classified “extraordinary.”

U.S. Raises Estimate for 10-Year Deficit to $9 Trillion
By EDMUND L. ANDREWS
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, citing an economic downturn that has been deeper than it had first thought, raised its estimate on Tuesday of the government’s deficit over the next decade to $9 trillion from $7.1 trillion.

The Office of Management and Budget also said that it expected the economy to contract 2.8 percent this year, substantially more than previously estimated, and that unemployment would peak at around 10 percent.

Even as the new projections cast a shadow over efforts in Washington to steer a middle course between rekindling inflation with too much fiscal and monetary stimulus or risking another recession with too little, President Obama announced that he would nominate Ben S. Bernanke to another four-year term as Fed chairman.

Estimate for 10-Year Deficit to $9 Trillion

Thanks. Saw the story last night, too. I’m no economic expert (just a casualty of the Feds’ rollercoaster rate game since year 2000…)

IMO, maybe the second-biggest mistake WJC ever made was NOT getting rid of Greenspan as Fed Chairman when he had the chance…Perhaps keeping Bernanke (Greenspan’s protege) will be a similar big mistake for BO. Just sayin’…

CJK 08.25.09 at 6:06 pm

P.S. Greenspan’s wife (since 1997) is none other than Andrea Mitchell (one of the ‘journalists’ who seem to think that HRC’s hair, weight, et al, are more important news topics than the great job HRC’s doing as U.S. Secretary of State, particularly her global focus/efforts on behalf of women, especially rape survivors).

Dances, teh iphone text app is the one that looks like a dialog box from a comic or political cartoon, well, it is a light green square with a white dialog box in it.

Alternately, if you know someone messaged you, and they are in your contacts, go to your contacts, open theirs, and on the bottom left is the option to text them. press that, and it will take you to the text dialog, and any text they sent you will be there.

hope this hepz

I was in high school when JFK was assassinated, and in college when RFK was assassinated. Both tragedies left me feeling unbearably sad for the Kennedy family and for our country. I remember thinking that our country would never be the same. I believe Ted Kennedy must’ve lived for many years ‘in the shadow’ of his older brothers’ legacies, though he did finally mature into a statesperson in his own right. Yes, we mourn the passing of Ted Kennedy, who did, after all, remind us of what the Democratic Party once strove to be and do, the Party that his older brothers once shaped and led with such genuine brilliance, distinction and strength, the Party that we former lifelong Democrats do yearn for during these deeply troubling, nigh-leaderless times. (For me, as a woman, there is also a lingering, profound sadness for the tragic, untimely death of a young MaryJo Kopechne, and for the inexplicable failure of character, honesty, integrity and strength on that long-ago Chappaquiddick night.)

Therefore, in my opinion he will bear a large role in the demise of the Democratic Party if Obama runs it into the ground. People in Mass are calling into Washington Journal this morning and some are crying over his death, saying the whole generation is gone. But, they left behind so many bright, healthy energetic children, so I can’t agree with the gloom and doom viewpoint.

So the ass grabbing drunk is dead. Two years too late. Hoping there is an afterlife and he gets his just rewards. Too angry?

Well, maybe a quarter full. But the guy who reads my electric meter would be better than boys-play-with-trucks-and-girls-with-dolls-because-they’re-made-that-way Summers.

Wow, love him or hate him. The WJ callers this morning sure are not neutral on the subject of Ted Kennedy. Many are crying and many hate his abortion stance and Mary Jo Kopechne. That incident is a part of his life and will always follow him. He lived a long, rich life with some tragedies, like all of us only maybe worse in his case. He had much and he lost much.

I always found it ironic that of all the Kennedy kids, it was not one from the John, Bobby, Ted side of the family that made the biggest name for themself, it was a Shriver. And the icing on the cake for the women mistreating Kennedy’s is that she was FEMALE – Maria Shriver. I loved JFK and had big hopes for Bobby, but I could never get past how they treated their wives.

Looks like he can take it to his grave. But it will live on……a spoiled rich boy who got off b/c his daddy had money. My son would have gone to jail! I have very little hero worship of any Kennedy or any man for that matter, they all feel entitled!

What really sucks about the demise of Kennedy is that bambi will use this as the greatest reason of all to pass his healthcare reform, in the name of Kennedy. He will guilt all the dems into passing the bill no matter what is in it. Time to step up the protest against the bill.

Yes, callers on WJ this morning have been bringing that up. BO was just on tv making a brief statement on the death of Kennedy (I was surprised that it was not longer). Now, he is no longer beholden to Kennedy for getting him elected, so he can do anything he wants. It will be interesting to watch what he does in the party and whether he does more of what he wants and less of what the party might want him to do.

I do not think George Obama will get to do anything other than what he is told…they can squash him as fast as they anointed him!

In addition to protesting ogagme’s healthcarecorporatewelfare agenda, it’s even more important to tell them what we want: single payer health care, otherwise they’ll just add more sparkly sprinkes and reword some of the existing language/guidelines in their version.
You can add whip cream to a pile of crap but it’s still a pile of crap.

If Pelosi and Ried hadn’t sold their souls for Obama I would agree, but they’ve tied themselves to him so closely, they may have lost their options over him and Axelrove. It depends on what he has that he can use against them. Then again I may be giving him too much credit since my favorite name for him is Waffles and that’s what he does most of the time.
