From The Guardian:

“Afghanistan has quietly passed a law permitting Shia men to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands’ sexual demands, despite international outrage over an earlier version of the legislation which President Hamid Karzai had promised to review.
The new final draft of the legislation also grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers, and requires women to get permission from their husbands to work.
“It also effectively allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying ‘blood money’ to a girl who was injured when he raped her,” the US charity Human Rights Watch said.”
–snip–
Islamic law experts and human rights activists say that although the language of the original law has been changed, many of the provisions that alarmed women’s rights groups remain, including this one: “Tamkeen is the readiness of the wife to submit to her husband’s reasonable sexual enjoyment, and her prohibition from going out of the house, except in extreme circumstances, without her husband’s permission. If any of the above provisions are not followed by the wife she is considered disobedient.”

Yup. Islam sucks.

Residents On Edge as 9 Women Vanish from N.C. City

Since 2005, nine women who lived at the edges of the poor community in this small North Carolina city have disappeared. Six bodies were found along rural roads just a few miles outside town, most so decomposed that investigators could not tell how they died. At least one of the women was strangled, and all the deaths have been classified as homicides. Three women are still missing.

meanwhile over on the front page of the NYT is a long story about the failed attempts (and wasted $$ millions) to improve women’s lives economically in Afghanistan. This sentence really jumped out at me:

“Visiting the program’s beneficiaries, most of whom had received goats and chickens, Ms. Kusuma found that few, if any, still owned the animals whose milk and eggs had been intended to provide their families with income. Some had sold the animals and others had been forced to give them to male family members.

This is part of the ongoing (and unacceptable) cost of invading Iraq. To the dismay of some of my friends, I supported going into Afghanistan after Osama. I cheered when I saw footage of the tanks rolling into Kabul, women throwing off their burqas, men forming round-the-block lines to get haircuts and shaves. That was a real liberation.

Bush’s obsession with Saddam lost those Afghan women’s freedom when the warlords took over and the Taliban came back as strong as ever. I might actually support a real offensive in Afghanistan to clear out the Taliban once and for all, but Obama will never risk it–and we can’t afford it anyway, after the bank kickbacks.

[Watching McCaskill try and mollify a crowd of angry, mean spirited, and, for anyone watching the entire meeting, entirely ignorant crowd of Republican and conservative inspired attendees opposed to health care reform, she looked more like a substitute teacher unable to get the attention of a bunch of lousy students but still trying. ]

———————————————————————————————-

This was Marc Rubin’s account of the town hall meeting that you attended. Would you agree with his assessment? “Mean spirited and ignorant’? My guess is that you would not. Those faithful BO supporters that are blindly so enamored with his health care reform just refuse to see what is right in front of their faces – they refuse to believe that some of these people are democrats and independents and others republicans who just don’t support this legislation. If they don’t wake up they will be very very sorry in November,

Can’t remember who now (sorry) but someone here said ‘thank goodness for Marc Rubin’ the other day for a very supportive article about Hillary (which I also applaud) but he seems very much out in field on this issue.

By the way it was apparently a Rosa Parks sign that the guy tore up. As you were right there on the spot could you discern the reason that he grabbed her poster? What was she screaming (I think that is the word you used) as she was ushered out?

I will never
understand why men abuse women and children…anywhere..

I will never understand why the current system allows men to abuse women and children…anywhere.

Abuse….is physical, and emotional. Whether it be bruises and broken bones or denying food and stealing her chickens and goats..it is abuse.

Children are merely another casuality of the abuse war. They are yet another tool used sadly and effectively against woman..
What greater pain for most mothers then
the suffering of her child?

{{{Simo and C.}}} I am soooooo sorry about the break in. I hope they get fingerprints and go after the vermin.

Prowl done.

31

sheila7 08.14.09 at 12:22 pm

Yes, they say it was Rosa Parks poster, however, I am pretty sure she was the one with an Obama poster but maybe not. One of them did have a Rosa Parks but I think it was her friend because she walked in first and I saw the BO poster first. Then I saw her friend’s which was Rosa Parks.
The reason he tore it up…
He didn’t have the right to grab it but everyone was mad because they would not let us bring in posters or signs and she had hers. She obviously waited until the end to bring it in when noone was at the door anymore. You would have had to be there but it was the way her and her friends walked in. She was definitely looking for a fight. In fact she walked past me and I said “oh bulls**t” because she had a BO poster and she “poked” her head out at me and I thought she was going to start a fight.
Also, it was not mean spirited. People wanted to be heard. Her and that guy were the only ones removed. In fact in my immediate vicinity I had 2 obots to the left of me, one to the right and two men behind me, one a conservative republican and one a conservative democrat. haha. That’s how they described themselves to me.

32

sheila7 08.14.09 at 12:25 pm

Oh yeah, I think she was screaming Obama but I’m not sure. It was very loud and I was desperatley trying to get my camera to work, which it wouldn’t. :(

By the way, the guy sitting behind me said for the first time in his life he voted for a Republican last year. He said he was a Clinton Democrat. I said you must be a PUMA. I told him about us and he laughed and said , Yeah I guess I am.

33

sheila7 08.14.09 at 12:26 pm

FLBarbara,
There is no greater pain in my opinion. Not much gets to me but that does every time.

34

michelina 08.14.09 at 12:27 pm

Hi Sheila&: I remember you saying no posters were
allowed, and Yes, that man didn’t have the right,
but in a way, I don’t blame him.

No one got hurt, main thing—–

I read today Bill Clinton is asking to get behind
Obama, for this healthcare:–got from the BEASST
———————————————————
Bill Clinton Rallies for Health Care

Former President Bill Clinton knows the difficulty in passing health-care reform having watched his own plan go down in flames in 1994. Now he’s urging supporters to back President Obama’s push, which is struggling through a difficult August. In a speech to Netroots Nation, a gathering of liberal bloggers and activists, Clinton told the audience to support Obama’s efforts even if the final result is less than what they wanted. “I want us to be mindful we may need to take less than a full loaf,” Clinton said. The ex-pres was also heckled by audience members for his policies towards gays while in office, including Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the military and the passage of the Defense of Marriage Act. Ever the diplomat, Clinton said he was not happy with this chapter of his presidency either. “Nobody regrets how this was implemented any more than I do,” he said. “I hated what happened.”Clinton also told the audience: “We have entered a new era of progressive politics which, if we do it right, can last 30 or 40 years… The president needs your help and the cause needs your help.”

I am so sorry about what happened to you and your wife. You may want to consider this:

http://www.easyhomesecurity.com/ssd-accessories.htm

http://www.easyhomesecurity.com/ssd16-security-system.htm

I have a wired alarm system in my house, but ten years ago I put on an addition and rather than having the alarm people come in and wire the new part and charge me a lot of money, I put this in and it works perfectly. This is a wireless system and I installed it myself and it was easy. I have never had a false alarm due to a malfunction. I have had malfunctions on the expensive wired one that is connected to the police. The wireless is not connected to the police, but is loud. It has a battery backup so if the electric is shut off or goes off, the alarm automatically turns on.

I am thinking about this Tamkeen law.Besides legalizing Abuse and Martial Rape.Is it not also legalizing attempted murder of a woman? Denying food to a human being, is not that an attempt to take their lifes? If you then succeed in starving her to death under Tamkeen Law then the man could also not be charged with her murder?
Because he was just following the law of the land.
I am thinking they have come up with a law in a form of legalizing honor killing??

No?

52

waterpanther 08.14.09 at 1:57 pm

Sent:

Dear Secretary Clinton,

Thank you so much for your wonderful work to protect women and children from rape in the Congo. I know you’re aware that a somewhat different version of the marital rape law your efforts helped to quash in Afghanistan has now made it through the Afghani legislature. Please do all that you can to overturn a law that allows a man to deprive his wife of food and other support as retaliation for declining sex.

Thank you. You are an inspiration to women everywhere.

53

FLBarbara 08.14.09 at 2:04 pm

So basically we are adding to the ever growing list of ways the are legal to kill your wife while protecting/defending your honor?

Beheadings
Stonings
Starvation
Only you won’t see her starving to death because she Can’t leave her house and when she does she is covered in a Burqua.

How about this spin on the Obama townhall meetings:
Can Barack Obama Keep Townhalls Cool?
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0809/26106.html

This part is on page 2:
Part of the reason could be that once inside a president’s event, there is an elevated level of respect, as Pitney said, a general feeling that yelling at the president of the United States is disrespectful. Before Obama’s event even the head of the New Hampshire GOP, former Gov. John Sununu, said he hoped attendees would treat the president respectfully.

The Secret Service presence at Obama’s events surely helps. They stand at the foot of his stage and are scattered throughout the room, suits on and earpieces in, ready to move on anyone who gets out of line.

But Obama is also a politician skilled at town halls and fielding tough questions.

“A lot of people at town halls have been trying to trip up members of Congress by asking difficult or tricky questions,” Pitney noted. “The one thing you can say about Barack Obama is he’s good at handling difficult and tricky questions. … You’re not going got embarrass Barack Obama in that way, he’s just too clever.”

If BO/MO go very far north, perhaps they might be eaten by grizzlies, as someone mentioned on a previous thread. ;-)

You have the PUMA spirit, sheila7!

Oh,
And especially thank you Murphy for making it all possible.

(((Murphy)))

BCL: Oh yes Politico is so right. O’bloviator is just too smart for that. I mean he would never say that doctors will cut your foot off and rip your tonsils out just to make more money.

I really want to cancel my newspaper subscription but I’m trying to support the workers.

Islam sucks and Murphy rocks.

Health care event attendee lied about being doctor. Oh and BTW she was an Obama Texas delegate:

Puma-SF,
Unbelievable. Thanks for the info.

PUMA SF

Wasn’t that on Sheila Jackson-Lee’s event?

She had the nerve to answer her cell phone while being asked a question during her Town Hall-see video on Gretawire.
When questioned she said she was talking with an Obama “Health Care Hotline” staffer!!! (I guess they help the congressweasels when the angry mob asks hard questions!)

Jackson-Lee said in an interview that at the Town Halls she was trying to “convince” her constituents that the health care plan would make their lives better.
She tried damned hard to sell it on Greta last night, wouldn’t shut up till Greta told her she “wasn’t listening” (even then she still kept talking…)

CJ
Can we put her on the Big Poop list??
And can we make a whole separate Poop List just for John “love child” Edwards?

82

sheila7 08.14.09 at 3:56 pm

Pers,
I think she is on the list. Oh, and I’m all for a separate list for John Edwards. He’s a pig.

The most amazing statement in that article is that the town hall was “closed to the public.” What’s the point of a town hall, if it’s not to communicate with “the public?” Time was I liked Sheila Jackson Lee. Re-evaluating now.

I saw that last night. Jackson-Lee still didn’t get it after Greta told her she wasn’t listening.

Hey, pers! Yep, Jackson Lee is definitely on the ‘poop list.’ We need to add Dingell. Another BO sycophant, I believe. Gotta rush out to an appt. Pers, any interested PUMAs, feel free to retrieve the ‘poop list’ from the previous thread and to add to/correct/repost here. Or, I can do when I come back. Thanks PUMAs! (((PUMAs))) BBL.

P.S. Pers, we probably need a whole separate list for “vote-splitting, HRC attacking, baby denying pigs” such as Edwards!

I hope someone is keeping a list of all the promises/statements Obama is making at these townhall meetings. Today I swear I heard him say we would pay for 2/3 of the cost of hc reform by new efficiencies in the system (he may have said eliminating waste and fraud, but I think it was inefficiencies). 2/3 of the cost??

93

BigCatLover 08.14.09 at 4:34 pm

Major Garrett of Fox is still on the story on how people’s email addresses who have received the Axelrove letter get on the email list. It’s a privacy issue to these people. Another person was reading a blog yesterday and the letter popped up on the page. He wants to know what triggered the popup. He is calling it spam.

Fox has submitted a Freedom of Information request with the WH.

Prowl done! Now I have to read the posts.
Oh BTW Dances, Brad Ellsworth sent me a hardcopy of that email he sent. It is on Congress letter head. I guess I was supposed to be impressed!
I am writing back, requesting drafts and copies of final amendments that the Senate and Congress has…
you know the ones they are not putting on the internet, for the fishy people to read ;)
