Raise your hand if:
- Anyone ever treated your husband’s opinion as more important, serious, or valid than yours.
- You’ve ever read a story about the rape, torture, murder of a little girl and saw yourself, your daughter, or your niece in the picture.
- You’ve ever realized that people wanted you to sit down, shut up, and go away — for no reason other than you were speaking your mind.
- You’ve ever been made fun of for being unattractive sexually to a man.
- You’re tired of the slights and misfortunes of any random man being treated as WAAY more significant than the daily degrading treatment of every random woman.
- You’ve ever wanted to just give up after reading the morning news.
Hands raised? Just like in the picture above? Good. Now jump!
Just when you thought Clinton Derangement Syndrome had permanently subsided, it’s BAAACK. At least the State Department, unlike the editors of the New York Times, are able to respond to the situation using the appropriate context.
“She did react to what she heard,” Crowley explained, but regardless that the interpreter may have gotten it wrong, “you can’t separate the question from the setting.” He said “If Africa, if Congo is going to advance, women have to play a more significant role. She was in the setting of a town hall, and the questioner was interested in what two men thought, not the secretary of state.”
Measured, smart, and tough reaction. Somebody in charge at State must know what’s she’s doing. Personally, I prefer Violet Socks’ take:
“I know if I’d just spent a day or two listening to mind-bogglingly horrific accounts of gang rape, I would be ready to beat the shit out of the next guy who said boo. I’d be all, fuck with me now, flipper. Bring it the fuck on.”
In other news, Bob Herbert at the NY Times is not doing obama any favors this morning:
“A truer picture of the employment crisis emerges when you combine the number of people who are officially counted as jobless with those who are working part time because they can’t find full-time work and those in the so-called labor market reserve — people who are not actively looking for work (because they have become discouraged, for example) but would take a job if one became available.
The tally from those three categories is a mind-boggling 30 million Americans — 19 percent of the overall work force.
This is, by far, the nation’s biggest problem and should be its No. 1 priority.”
Heck, I don’t know. Perhaps massive unemployment among men, matched by much less unemployment among American women, will be GOOD for the country. Maybe the wage gap will close. Maybe fathers will discover the joys and personal satisfaction of staying in the house with small children raising children. Maybe women’s financial contribution to their families will become more valued. . .
Actually, somebody pinch me. Of course that won’t happen. What WILL happen, I bet, is we’ll read LOTS of articles about male self-esteem and the justifying explanations for men hauling off and massacring their wives, children, or any other woman close to hand.
Meanwhile, it’s getting pretty hot up here on the New Hampshire border. Crowds have been gathering in Portsmouth since this morning. Locally, my own rep is holding another Town Hall this evening. Yesterday we received emails from her supporters encouraging us to get there 3 HOURS EARLY in order to get seats so we can voice our allegiance to Obamacare. That’s called pre-filling and it’s the bounciest kind of astroturf there is.
Since I haven’t done this in a while and there is a lot of news swirling out there today, here’s a roundup of Puma and Puma-friendly Blogs:
- The always excellent Riverdaughter explains why she doesn’t intend to stop talking about the Democratic primaries and the stealing of the nomination.
- Pumaeyes covers Hillary Clinton, swinging a sledge-hammer no less, in South Africa.
- katalusis is worried about the End-of-Life provisions in Obamacare, and AARP isn’t making her feel any better.
- Notyoursweetie has her awesome NY Tabloids round-up.
- While reading there I came across this lovely story about women enslaved, literally, in New York.
- Partizane remembers the kindest Kennedy of all.
- Violet Socks, well, read anything there.
- Tennessee Guerilla Women has more on Clinton standing up to misogynistic sexism in Africa and being slapped down at home for it.
- I was going to link to Joe Cannon, but then his top story made me so dismayed I lost heart.
Please share any uplifting thoughts, links, news stories you may have come across recently. All these stories about gang-rape, torture, and girl-murder are enough to make anyone want to give up. And to think Secretary Clinton is being ridiculed and undermined for batting away a sexist question with a firm hand.
If you get discouraged, go back up to the top of the thread and put yourself in the pictures.

I said earlier today on the blog that Washington Journal played the entire clip of HRC in the Congo and the translater clearly says ‘President Clinton’. There was no misunderstanding by Hillary. That was the question she was asked, so don’t let the media spin this story.

Question
is it true that Medicaid, Medicare and Social Secuity are bankrupt?
———————-
EVERY American owes an additional $330,000 for the last government health care program!
Please sit tight while I walk you through the math of Medicare. As you may know, the program comes in three parts: Medicare Part A, which covers hospital stays; Medicare B, which covers doctor visits; and Medicare D, the drug benefit that went into effect just 29 months ago. The infinite-horizon present discounted value of the unfunded liability for Medicare A is $34.4 trillion. The unfunded liability of Medicare B is an additional $34 trillion. The shortfall for Medicare D adds another $17.2 trillion. The total? If you wanted to cover the unfunded liability of all three programs today, you would be stuck with an $85.6 trillion bill. That is more than six times as large as the bill for Social Security. It is more than six times the annual output of the entire U.S. economy.

HOME VISITATION PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES EXPECTING CHILDREN – Sections 1904 and 440
I read an article about these sections, but they neglected to say that the program is voluntary. I am not sure if it is voluntary on the part of the families or on the part of the states to participate in this program, but I think it is voluntary on both.
Section 1904
http://www.amchp.org/Advocacy/Home-Visitation/Documents/Home%20visiting%20language%20House%20Tri-Comm%20Bill%20%20%207%2015.pdf
The bill offers funding to states to send government officials into private homes to teach moms and dads how to rear children according to state-approved criteria developed by “experts” and covering every imaginable aspect of parenting.
Home visits by state officials are, among other things, supposed to promote “activities designed to help parents become full partners in the education of their children.” (H. R. 3200, page 844)
The ultimate goal of the bill is for states to reach “as many families with young children and families expecting children as practicable…” (page 842), but the most vulnerable would be targeted first – low income families, non-English-speaking families.
(prejudicial stereotyping and generalization of low-income families and non-English speaking families?)
Once trapped in a system of government “help” and surveillance (required under the bill in order to monitor the effectiveness of the program), it would be very hard for families to break free, both psychologically and literally.
This section would provide a well-trained and competent staff to help parents with:
knowledge of realistic expectations of age-appropriate child behaviors;
knowledge of health and wellness issues for children and parents;
modeling, consulting, and coaching on parenting practices; and
skills to recognize and seek help for issues related to health, developmental delays, and social, emotional, and behavioral skills…”
Within five years after the date of enactment of the section the Secretary shall submit to the Congress a final report on the evaluation conducted on this program. Then, maybe, Congress will mandate it for all families?

Angry White Men
by Pat Buchanan
http://buchanan.org/blog/angry-white-men-1850
SNIP-
There is an anger out there unseen since Ross Perot was leading Bush I and Bill Clinton in the presidential trial heats in 1992.
Who are these folks? Why are they angry?
In his essay “Decline of the American Male” in USA Today, David Zinczenko, editor of Men’s Health, give us a clue. “Of the 5.2 million people who’ve lost their jobs since last summer, four out of five were men. Some experts predict that this year, for the first time, more American women will have jobs than men.”
Ed Rubenstein, who has written for Forbes, National Review and the Wall Street Journal, blogs on VDARE.com that if one uses the household survey of job losses for June-July, Hispanics gained 150,000 positions, while non-Hispanics lost 679,000. Guess who got the stimulus jobs.
Going back to the beginning of the Bush presidency, Rubenstein says that “for every 100 Hispanics employed in January 2001, there are now 122.5. … (But) for every 100 non-Hispanics employed in January 2001, there are now 98.9.”
Since 2001, Hispanic employment has increased by 3,627,000 positions, while non-Hispanic positions have fallen by 1,362,000. For black and white America, the Bush decade did not begin well or end well, and it has gotten worse under Obama.
African-Americans remain loyal, but among white folks, where Obama ran stronger than John Kerry or Al Gore, he is hemorrhaging.
According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, which showed him falling to 50 percent approval, whites, by 54 percent to 27 percent, felt Obama behaved “stupidly” in the Sgt. Crowley-professor Gates dustup.
Fifteen straight months of job losses by non-Hispanics explains the anger, but columnist Lowell Ponte raises an issue that may explain who is protesting health-care reform and why.

Dingell compares town hall mobs to the KKK
Video: Dingell says town-hall protests remind him of the Klanposted at 11:36 am on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Steny Hoyer have called the constituents speaking out against ObamaCare at town halls “un-American,” and that didn’t slow them down. Will calling them “racists” do it? MS-NBC’s Ed Schultz tosses a softball to Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), last seen being flummoxed by his own constituents last week. At the time, Dingell dismissed his critics as “infiltrators.” Today, they’re the equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan (via The Weekly Standard):

I LOVE that Hillary responded in that fashion! I’m glad that she’s finally tired of hearing the question, “well, what does Bill think?”.
I *ALWAYS* get sexist crap from mechanics when I take my car in and they tell me what the problem is; “if you want little lady, we can talk to your husband about the problem”…or, “do you want to talk to your husband before we do the work”..or some such crap.
I finally found my voice and as I’ve gotten older, I now tell them, “no, you’ll deal with ME – you see, *I* control the checkbook and it’s MY car, and now that you’ve treated me like I’m stupid, you can throw in a FREE oil change too”!
It makes me sad to think what we and our daughters have missed out on – a true woman leader, not afraid to speak her mind.
BTW, my son has been a stay-at-home Dad for the last year…and he’s loving it! His wife is loving it too – she comes home and he has dinner fixed and the house & my grandson are both clean!

http://www.breitbart.tv/obama-in-03-id-like-to-see-a-single-payer-health-care-plan/
RememberNovember 08.11.09 at 1:54 pm
Universal Plan from a Republican – do you support a Universal Plan or are you open to the Insurance companies being involved. A single- payer plan like they have in Canada – government pays for the plan like Medicare for all. He says he is not for a single-payer plan (he is not telling the truth if I recall correctly and certainly that is not how HR3200 is set up – see his 2003 speech – must go back and check) -he wants everybody to get affordable health care from Insurance companies – if I hear one more time that you can keep the plan you like I will go postal – he wants public option in the menu.
How can a private company compete against the government plan – if public option not paid for by Taxes (important) then private insurance companies should do just fine. Important that this plan should NOT be supported by taxes – must be self-sustaining.
These questions are SO planted….

Good morning lovely PUMAs everywhere. Excellent post, Murphy.
Woke up with these thoughts: All chauvinistic/sexist/misogynistic men (and the ‘queen bee’ women who condone/support them) will go the way of the dodo and the dinosaur — toward ultimate extinction. Deprive them of their food source — absolute power and control over others –and they will soon starve. Stop nurturing this egomaniacal male supremacy in every possible way. Start nurturing the community of women in every possible way.

Wow, the insurance comapanies are going to add subsidiaries to the kitty and then savings, and then there is a little left over that will need new sources to pay for it. Incomes over $250,000 will have the deductions limited on income tax and that will pay for it? That was Obamas preferred was to pay fo rhc, but Congress has other ideas so it is still up in the air. It’s not his fault if this payment plan is not passed.

Silly thought for the day: When is somebody going to ask BO the following question — It is unprecedented in our lifetimes for a POTUS to push so relentlessly for any piece of legislation. This raises the obvious question, what is your real reason for pushing so hard — to the point of asking neighbors to report neighbors to a WH website for speaking out in opposition to HR3200 — for this particular piece of legislation? You’ve risked violating every American citizen’s First Amendment rights. What do you stand to gain/lose from the passage/failure of HR3200?

He wants to make sure that people don’t think these questions are planted by taking a couple questions from those who have serious concerns…….yeah…
Where are the doctors and nurses going to come from to cover all these people? $500 billion in savings to come from Medicare (ME – but we are going to cover MORE people in Medicare and Fraud apparently accounts for only 1% of Medicare costs). Concerned about a board sitting and making judgements about withholding care. She is asking too many questions – he will cherry pick.
BO- Constant nurse shortage – severe primary care physician shortage – they are not paid as much as specialists. Better equity of pay among surgeons, other specialists and primary care physicians (ME – this is a GOOD idea but lots of his ideas sound good but that’s not in the Bill)
goofsmom 08.11.09 at 2:12 pm
RemNov,
Yeh, all of it sounds lovely, but are not what is in the bill… he is saying what he thinks people want to hear, not about the actuallity of what is being legislated…

BCL – EXCELLENT point about including government employees and CONGRESS in the pool for a public option. However, their answer is that BO says if they like their plan they can keep it. Do you think they would ever raise the public option to the level of Congress’ coverage? That’s how it should be.
Sorry missed the poiunt myself about insurance company subsidies – was arguing with my husband about pay equity for physicians – he is right that is socialism – but I think PCPs should still have incentives to practice. BTW I seem to remember in the bill there was going to be a greater use of physician’s assistants and nurse care practitioners – so it might take a few steps before we get to see a physician.

Here’s a link (H/T to webfoot!) re the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program. I believe Congress and POTUS are included under this plan. http://www.opm.gov/insure/
Apparently, during open enrollment, federal employees can pick and choose from among private health plans. They pay about 25 percent; the government (you and me via tax dollars) pay about 75 percent.
Why can’t that program just be extended to be available to all of us at the 25 percent rate the federal employees are getting???

Hey RemVem – don’t worry about me – I’m fine – I just have to rant & rave to someone every once in a while – I used to be able to do that at work but since I’ve retired – I rant here – nobody tells me to shut the fuck up – they either read it or not and pass on to the next comment – works for me………….
I’m 64 and I have no insurance currently – COBRA was too expensive & anything else was just for bad things – nothing cheaper that covered stuff like dentist, glasses, physicals or just doctor visit – like when I screwed up my knee (cost me almost 400 bucks – was told I should have negotiated – hell, I just paid it) – found out that all those years (about 40+) of wearing stillettoes are what have screwed up at least one knee (arthritis) so far – it’s better now that I’ve been doing leg exercises – course – since not working I mostly go barefoot around the apt so that’s probably helping too…………oh well now that bloviator is done – will go have some late lunch…..

Congress’s Own Health Plan As A Model For Medicaire Reform
by Stuart Butler, Ph.D. and Robert E. Moffit, Ph.D.
…snip…
As Congress begins work on a reconciliation bill to put into place legislation to flesh out the entitlement spending targets of the recent budget agreement, lawmakers are considering ways to reform Medicare. These reforms not only must achieve the short-term budget targets, but also must begin the task of achieving structural reforms that will bring about long-term savings through efficiency while modernizing and improving the program.
An increasing number of lawmakers, among them Senators John Breaux (D-LA), Connie Mack (R-FL), and Ron Wyden (D-OR), have shown an interest in reforming Medicare by introducing key features of the health care system that covers Members of Congress and over 9 million other federal employees and retirees. This program—the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP)—has been attracting a great deal of attention recently, including a day of hearings before the Senate Finance Committee. Using the FEHBP as the foundation for Medicare reform would be compatible with the outline of reform now being prepared by the leadership in both houses of Congress.

Maybe you can relate to another retired person’s foot story. When I worked and wore dress shoes my feet looked terrible (and old). but after I retired and started going barefoot and wearing only comfortable shoes, my feet are now so good looking I’ve started wearing sandals again. An unexpected benefit or retirement.

Susue,
Why don’t cha sign up for SS, 62 makes you eligible…you will be insured (partly) with A and you can get part B for about 95 bucks a month. They take the 95 to 100 dollars right out of your SS check. Did you work for a company? If you were self employed or a stste or in teaching it may be a whole different ballgame.
Just saying..I started at 62 to collect, why? because I could. I may get less each month but I get more years, as a woman I will probably live longer than Medicare.
CJK 08.11.09 at 3:08 pm
Okay, BCL, RemVem, and anyone interested in the FEHB. Here’s a link to a pamphlet with the ‘facts’ in pdf format. http://www.opm.gov/retire/pubs/pamphlets/forms/ri75-13.pdf
Apparently, FEHB is available to Congress and POTUS, as I understand it, because it is available to ‘permanent federal employees with a regularly scheduled tour of duty, et al.’ (See first page after Table of Contents.) I’m paraphrasing from notes since I couldn’t copy and paste for some reason: It is the largest emoployer-sponsored group health insurance program in the world, with approx. ’9 million participants, including employees, annuitants and their families as well as some former spouses and former employees. It offers fee-for-service, HMOs and plans offering point of service products.
Go to the link and read all about it. My question remains: Why could this program not be made available to American citizens at the same 25 percent rate as federal employees??? As taxpayers, e’re already footing the bill for the other 75 percent of coverage for federal employees, which apparently (as far as I can tell from the pamphlet) includes Congress and POTUS.

Latest Rasmussen report is out:
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/healthcare/august_2009/support_for_congressional_health_care_reform_falls_to_new_low
Sixty-seven percent (67%) of those under 30 favor the plan while 56% of those over 65 are opposed. Among senior citizens, 46% are strongly opposed.
Predictably, 69% of Democrats favor the plan, while 79% of Republicans oppose it. Yet while 44% of Democratic voters strongly favor the reform effort, 70% of GOP voters are strongly opposed to it.
Most notable, however, is the opposition among voters not affiliated with either party. Sixty-two percent (62%) of unaffiliated voters oppose the health care plan, and 51% are strongly opposed. This marks an uptick in strong opposition among both Republicans and unaffiliateds, while the number of strongly supportive Democrats is unchanged.

Thanks for the link, goofs. I quickly read the article. Can’t relate. My dad grew up in a poor farm community during the depths of the Great Depression, and never had an opportunity for a formal education. His parents’ farm burned down and he and his numerous siblings (15 in all) were parceled out to relatives. He was a self-taught carpenter who supported and raised seven kids on a carpenter’s pay, mainly in SoCal. He never wondered, considered or asked whether it was his ‘responsibility’ to support and raise us. He never wondered, considered or asked whether having the courage to support and raise us meant that he was a ‘man.’ He simply did it. He still encourages all seven of us to ‘just do it’ in living the best lives we can on this earth. He was/is a wonderful father. And he didn’t need a ‘faith-based initiative’ to tell him the best way to raise a family.

The thing I like about “Gray Pumas” is the link to The Gray Panthers and Maggie Kuhn is apparent. I like the continuity and the honoring of this great woman. Plus, it works with the Speak Your Truth t-shirts.
“Silver Pumas” brings up associations with the Golden Girls (who were women, by the way, not “girls”.)

There were also many other religious leaders among those 11 million.. Including my great uncle who was a Priest.
On a more personal note, this is one of the reasons that it really upsets me (not speaking for any other pumas) when individuals compare “O” to Hitler… What Hitler did was heinously incomprehensible, period. What “O” is doing is no where near this. Comparing “O” to Hitler is wrong, wrong, wrong!

Goofs,
I’m not denying that Jews as an ethnic, cultural, religious group were demonized and targetted… just do not want to dishonor the other FIVE MILLION who also met their eventual deaths at the hands of Hitler.
To over look the 5 million is, in my opinion, on the same level as those who deny there was a holocaust at all.

So far, what BO has done/is doing is in no way comparable to what H did in Nazi Germany. But, one cannot help but see frightening similarities in the demagoguery and the use of oratorical skills to incite the mob and gather support for a single-minded (and as-yet still-hidden agenda).

Goofs, I understand. When I consider, however, that every piece of legislation BO pushes is essentially aimed at greater and greater government control of each American citizen’s individual life (even extending to decisions by some bureaucrat/insurer, as in HR3200, about their individual personal healthcare, including end-of-life care and perhaps even possible euthanasia/assisted suicide), I wonder how much of a leap it would take for BO’s ‘social engineering’ to devolve into some sort of ‘social cleansing,’ as in H’s ‘ethnic cleansing.’ No, I would in no way dishonor the 11 million victims of the holocaust. But, one way to continue to honor them, IMO, is for everyone to remain constantly vigilant against any government or any so-called leader attempting to exert total control over citizens and to ‘socially engineer’ the world we live in.

sheila7 08.11.09 at 6:15 pm
Ok, I’ll try to remember the highlights.
I got there, got in with no problem. Long traffic line but other than that not too bad. I got a seat in the front row of the bleachers.
They said there were 3,500 people there. It was crowded but a big gym.
People were pretty vocal but all in all most of it went without a hitch.
Story on the arrest- When I got there it said no signs or posters. Well, about 1 1/2 hours into it here comes 4 obots, glaring at everybody, trying to stir people up, and they have big Obama posters. Pictures of his head and I don’t know what else. People start screaming, No signs! and finally Claire has to stop talking to see what’s going on. She tells them to put the signs down and says she doesn’t know how they got in. They were definitely not there (in the gym) prior to that. They came in from the back.
They sit down and other people moved away so as not to sit by them.. heeheehee… Well, out of nowhere, somebody from the bleachers, about 7-10 people down from me, jumps down and grabs her poster and takes off with it.
She jumps up and I couldn’t tell if she actually hit him but it looked like it. The police ran over and took her out. She was screaming OBAMA on the way out and they went right past me.
I am in the clip they showed but you can only see my shoulder.
ok, enough for one post. I’ll continue in a moment.

CJK,
I see the point you are making… and yes “we the people” should always be alert to tyrants and those looking to be emperors…
As far as BO and social cleansing etc… I’ve seen these comparisons made… It’s not the same and still can not be compared… BO would still only be a Stalin like personality not H, never H.
Besides, at this point we still have some control of government and we are, as a populis relearning the use of our voices… Since our government has not shot us, put us in a prison camp or used us for medical experiments for having our own opinions yet, I can’t compare “O” to Hitler…
BigCatLover 08.11.09 at 6:18 pm
They are discussing on PBS that if the public option is taken out of the hc plan, then the insurance industry would have everyone over a barrel since they would have to purchase hc insurance, but have no option to private hc. Also one pundit says Obama should not promise that people can keep current coverage since he can’t make employers maintain their current plans.

Hey, goofs. I understand and agree with most of what you say. Guess I’m just a natural-born cynic. When you say,
“Since our government has not shot us, put us in a prison camp or used us for medical experiments for having our own opinions yet, I can’t compare “O” to Hitler…” I have to add, at least, not yet…
H did indeed murder the dissidents (those who disagreed with his agenda) along with the others. So, yes, so far we still have some control over our government. But, so long as we allow BO and cronies to get away with the unprecedented tactics they’re utilizing to push just his healthcare agenda, can we count on continuing to have that control? I have never before known of a POTUS who was willing to so cavalierly violate American citizen’s rights under the First Amendment, as BO did when he put out the word for neighbors to turn in anyone opposing HR3200 to a WH web site. Nor, have I ever known of a POTUS who pushed this hard for any piece of legislation. What does BO stand to gain/lose with the passage/failure of HR3200? That is a troubling question for me.

sheila7 08.11.09 at 6:28 pm
So, as far as me getting called on. When you went in if you wanted to ask a question you wrote it down and then they put them in a fishbowl. So I did.
Well, she pulled someone with the same question before me. A little while later I heard her say my name and I stood up. I told her she already answered my question and she asked if I would like to ask another so I said yes. But, I was taken off guard and couldn’t think of something good to say so my voice was shaking as I thought up a question real quick. plus, it was a very large gym and I had to speak very loudly and I don’t have a loud voice. So, I was somewaht disappointed in myself because all I could think to ask was how this would end up being paid for if there was to be no tax increase on the middle class? Kind of lame.

“for people with life threatening illnesses”…
===================================
I read this section of the bill and posted in the ‘good plan or rubbish’ thread. It does not specify that a person has to have a ‘life threatening illness’, in order to qualify for this counseling.
just wanted to make sure we don’t skew what is actually written in the bill.
goofsmom 08.11.09 at 6:32 pm
CJK,
True he has called for these actions… again if very few participate in turning in their neighbors then we are still not like Nazi Germany…
People are questioning are are threating legal fights on all his tattle on you neighbor plans etc… the press is covering the fears of lack of privacy… this did not happen in NG and if a paper or person did speak out they were shut down and shot…
Cynacism is healthy… being in constant fear that the US will become like NG of the 30′s and 40′s is not healthy. Plus we are to large a country for “O” to carry off the suppression of the public like Hitler and the Nazi’s did…

“Sorry, I’m not going to just swallow all the sky is falling, dr demento, soylent green bullshit anyone feels like spewing.”
Dances, IMO, it isn’t ‘sky is falling, dr. demento, soylent green bullshit’ to point out that HR3200 would give over the power to make healthcare decisions for each American citizen to a huge government/insurer bureaucracy and doctors, completely ignoring the individual patient’s privacy and rights. That does appear to be part and parcel of this bill. Whether or not assisted suicide/euthanasia would be part of the program of every-five-year counseling for those 65 years and older is an open question that apparently has not yet been fully answered. To me, that’s beside the point. I don’t want the government/insurers/doctors having control over my healthcare decisions. That’s a violation of my Constitutional rights.

Goofs, good points. Just so you know, I do not live in ‘constant fear that the United States will become like NG of the 30s and 40s.’ But, if you need any other proof that we are really not ‘too large a country for ‘O’ to carry off suppression of the public,’ just look at how BO and his goons pulled off the fraud, corruption and suppression of the caucuses, the primary, the convention and the general election last year. If BO and his goons could do that, perhaps this country is not too large…Just something to ponder…

Bring Me a Higher Love
Think about it, there must be higher love
Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above
Without it, life is a wasted time
Look inside your heart, Ill look inside mine
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Wheres that higher love I keep thinking of?
Worlds are turning and were just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and its real to me
There must be someone whos feeling for me
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Wheres that higher love I keep thinking of?
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Bring be a higher love
I could rise above on a higher love
I will wait for it
Im not too late for it
Until then, Ill sing my song
To cheer the night along
Bring it…oh bring it…
I could light the night up with my soul on fire
I could make the sun shine from pure desire
Let me feel that love come over me
Let me feel how strong it could be
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love

The paper appearing in The Lancet is titled “Principles for allocation of scarce medical interventions” and discusses existing methods for determining who gets priority in allocation of limited and scarce medical resources, such as, who gets an organ, who gets the ICU bed, and who gets a vaccine which may be in limited supply. He discusses why each of these are flawed for various reasons, and then proceeds to present his own alternative system–the complete lives system.

More on the allocation of scarce medical services which happens when money goes south such as in a recession
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel
When implemented, the complete lives system produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between roughly 15 and 40 years get the most substantial chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get chances that are attenuated.
~*~
Unlike allocation by sex or race, allocation by age is not invidious discrimination; every person lives through different life stages rather than being a single age. Even if 25-year-olds receive priority over 65-year-olds, everyone who is 65 years now was previously 25 years. Treating 65-year-olds differently because of stereotypes or falsehoods would be ageist; treating them differently because they have already had more life-years is not.

New England PUMA meet up in Maine
PapaPuma and I are inviting our PUMA friends to join us in Maine on Sunday, 8/16/09 or a potluck meetup. We are thinking 11am – 5pm and it is a spectacular natural vista with ocean and cliff walk. Our place is a modest time share but we can host outside (inside pool is weather is bad).
Murphy, SisterPuma, Zee, Gojoy are already lined up. Write to me at MamaPumaMass@aol.com for all the details. You are genuinely welcome. I can not wait to see everybody.
We really do not have any kitchen facilities (tiny fridge and hot plate for kitchen) but my mother always loved a picnic. Murphy has introduced her to you as Gingy and let me tell you she was a piece of work. She died in 2005 at 101.
The pool is wonderful and the ocean is beyond belief.
Love

thank you Scarlet. I didn’t think she was talking about the 250,000 but it was hectic in there.

Sheila7
Congratulations! You did a great job. I am very proud of you. I know it took a lot for you to get up in front of all those people and think of something off the cuff to ask. Be very proud of yourself. Now you know… nothing can stop you. You have been PUMATIZED! Wish I could have been there with you.
sheila7 08.11.09 at 8:48 pm
thanks prplvette85! I wish you could have been there too.
I am proud. I’m also proud to be a part of such an intelligent group of people. Love you PUMAS.
NikkisMom 08.11.09 at 9:22 pm
Sheila – were there as many SEIU thugs in Hillsboro as there were at the last event?
I think I’m going to get Mama’s new healthcare plan and take that with me too. Maybe I’ll slip a copy of that into Claire’s mixed bag of questions, just in case I don’t get to speak about it!

That was a joke knowing how you feel. Guess I didn’t make that clear in my comment. Whew!
———————————–
sorry BigCat…
i was just venting… I am just so angry at this whole thing..
I have no townhalls to attend.. I feel like a caged Cat
It’s been a while since I felt like I was actually out there being heard, instead of just blogging or writing, emailing etc. This cat needs some real action!
NikkisMom 08.11.09 at 9:25 pm
Sheila, Claire had an easier time today than Arlen Specter did!
I like the girl in the green shirt – 35 yrs. old – “you have awakened a sleeping giant”. Her voice was shaking too….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn3KyYhd7l8
sheila7 08.11.09 at 9:28 pm
NikkisMom,
I didn’t see any SEIU thugs. In fact I didn’t see any “organized” groups. I take that back, I did see a group that were in pink shirts. I don’t know who they were and to my knowledge they weren’t obnoxious. They were across the gym from me.
There were a LOT of police there. They were directing traffic, K9 unit was there with the dogs out, police checking bags as we went in and I saw at least 7 policemen in the gym. I’m sure that helped cut down on the outbursts.
sheila7 08.11.09 at 9:32 pm
NikkisMom,
Claire did have an easier time. A lot of booing but that’s about it. At one point she said “don’t you trust me?” WTF. What did she think people would say. She looked shocked when the whole gym said NO! LOL.
I like the girl in the green shirt too. I know how she felt.
sheila7 08.11.09 at 9:35 pm
NikkisMom,
Something Claire said;
One guy asked “How do you expect to keep your job if you vote for this bill? Missourians don’t want this.”
She said, “Well, I’m going to try my best and my hardest but in the end if I have to come home, that’s okay too.”

I didn’t think any of my reps were going to have townhalls either, at aleast I voulcn’t find them. then on the news today they said my newly elected rep was going to hold one but it wouldn’t be on health care. She may get a surprise when she gets there. But, the news did not say when or where she would be, so I’m still looking. That may be true in your area too, especially if your rep is a democrat.
sheila7 08.11.09 at 9:57 pm
Oh I forgot something else Claire said.
She said no bill will come out of congress with single payer reform. She said she is against it and every Senator she has spoken to is against it. It will never pass.

Having read Ezekiel Emanuel’s papers I share your concerns. It’s money (after the H1N1 vaccine) that will be in short supply and That’s when decsisions will have to be made about who gets what care.
How nice of you to host the Maine Pumas – sounds lovely. I am on the other coast but it would be nice to meet you all one day.

Hi RemNov. I saw myself on TV but if you don’t know exactly where to look you can’t see me. I had my son take a picture of me in my shirt though and I’ll see about posting that somewhere.
Casper Cat 08.11.09 at 10:58 pm

That would be nice (to post a pic) – do I have to watch NBC to see you? It was really nice to see HP’s pic the other day..
sheila7 08.11.09 at 11:00 pm
I always liked your name REmNov. I assumed it meant we will remember in November (election time).. Is that right?
sheila7 08.11.09 at 11:03 pm
RemNov- you don’t have to watch NBC for it. Any of the ones that show the one lady that the police are removing and she is screaming. I am on the bottom bleacher that they are walking past but there’s a lot of people around.
Greta is the only one I watched that actually showed the guy taking her poster and crumpling it.
goofsmom 08.11.09 at 11:03 pm
Sheila7,
I’m back… I have a great idea… send your picture to Dances… Then she or Murphy can post it for all the rest of us to see… Attach to an email and put something like uhhh… Shelia7 in her Puma Shirt in the subject line…

Double meaning for me (no triple – your birthday too
). First for Hillary for the election 2008 and also, being originally a Brit…”Remember remember the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot, I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot” (commemorating Guy Fawkes failed attempt to blow up Parliament). Now it has a new meaning – Remember November (2010 and 2012 – we are watching you and we have the power to change your job descriptions)
sheila7 08.11.09 at 11:11 pm
Hi goofsmom. I guess I could email it to Dances. I’ll see if she wants me to.

God it is so damn hot here in NY and parents do not have air.It is in the 90s feels like hell.

I’ve been traveling and have not had time to lurk or comment but today I took a few minutes to read up on what some of my fellow pumas have been up to.
You make me proud Sheila7. Thank you for taking a stand against the liars who have corrupted the democratic party. I know you must feel good about what you accomplished and you should.
I am taking a break right now but am really enjoying watching my Senator Arlen Spector, who must be wondering to himself, why on earth did I pick such a God awful time to become a democrat?
Thanks Sheila. You are PUMA POWER in action!

OMG… I just stopped laughing so I could finally post this… Was anyone just watching Animal Planet…
I don’t know who was the genius that came up with this but it was like a real life Far side Cartoon…
It was a show on lions.. They wanted to see how a mini pride of young male lions acted in establishing dominance on who eats first. They had two guys in a polymer/plexiglass box and put some kill out about 5 to 6′ away from the box to observe…
What idiots it was so funny watching these guys were freaking out… the show is still on go see..

Well,
I couldn’t sleep. Anyway I found a video that I’m in. I am at about the 1:02 mark. they are leading the lady out. On the side where the bleachers are there is a lady in black (I think standing) and I am sitting next to her in a white shirt. There is a guy next to me in a suit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bSJcTgp20I
sheila7 08.12.09 at 3:02 am
Actually it’s a little before the 1:02 mark. But the whole video is interesting. It turns out this lady is an activist here. Her sign was about Rosa Parks but her friend’s was BO.

Good Morning Murphy and Pumas!
Thanks Goofsmom for the link @324……very cool link!!..while cruising around over there….I found this interesting piece…
Another Woman that Smokes!
“Last Female Space Shuttle Commander leaves NASA”
Despite the significance of her achievement, Melroy said the distinction wasn’t a big deal for her.
“It doesn’t mean anything in particular to me because I’m certainly not going to be the last female commander of a spacecraft,” Melroy, 48, told SPACE.com. She explained that female astronauts are still qualified to command the space station (which doesn’t require astronauts to be pilots to command), and will likely lead missions on NASA’s future spacecraft, such as Orion, being developed now.
“I’d like to see a woman command a mission to Mars,” she said.

Wow – you were up late! You’re probably sleeping in right now. I see you in the video – the lady in the shorts & white t-shirt is you, right?
Crazy Obots – *sigh*. Overall, it looks like Claire ran a smooth townhall compared to the videos of the other meetings on YouTube. Did you meet any other democrats at the meeting?
I was surprised to see a guy in a suit in the meeting with the hot weather we’ve been having! I saw the video where they told Claire that they didn’t trust her. She truly looked shocked!
Thanks for the report! With your information, I now know that I need to go prepared with 4 or 5 questions.

I just saw a report on fox news about the town hall you attended yesterday, and I could see you close up! I wish I would have recorded it! Could almost read your shirt if I would have had my glasses on lol!

I didn’t. But I’m going to assume that was not a real duck. Right??

Saw you on the video. You were right in the middle of the excitement. Congratulations.

BCL – looks like a rubber duck to me. Probably would have been more appropriate to use a crow tho.
