This is clever:

Republicans played a trick on Democrats today by redirecting angry telephone calls coming into their switchboard to the Democratic National Committee, CNN reports.

Earlier this morning, the DNC released a web video accusing the GOP of inciting mob activity.

“At the end of the video, the DNC instructs people to call the Republican National Committee to express outrage. Callers who dial the RNC’s main number to voice their concern about the DNC’s charges are told to press 1, which sends them to the DNC’s main switchboard.”

The emphasis on that deliciously ironic pair of phrases is mine. In the name of countering what they claim is the GOP’s inexcusable “incit[ement of] mob activity,” the Democrats did what they always do: stir up the masses and, yes, incite mob activity in opposition to the GOP.

Whoever the clever RNC staffer was who thought to redirect those calls right back to the source of the outrage — the DNC — deserves a free lunch and a letter of commendation.

That was freaking awesome.

But surely there will be some price to pay for equating nearly 60 percent of the voting public with “mobs of extremists.” According to a new Qunippiac poll:

In the Quinnipiac survey, 55% (including 54% of the key independent voter bloc) said they were more concerned that the overhaul would increase the deficit than that Congress would not pass some kind of overhaul. That same 57% (and 59% of independents) disagreed with the following statement: “Overhauling the nation’s health care system is so important that it should be enacted even if it means substantially increasing the federal budget deficit.”

The poll also contains another piece of the public opinion puzzle that Mr. Obama and the Democratic congressional leadership may find problematic: Voters by a large margin don’t want a health care overhaul if it can only garner Democratic votes. In other words, even though Democrats control both houses of Congress, voters are suspicious of a bill that only has Democratic support.

The poll found 59% of the public disagreed (and only 36% agreed) with the following statement: Congress should approve a health care overhaul even if only Democrats support it.”

It’s utterly probable that some—even many— of the concerned folks showing up at health-care town halls are the kind of older, white, Middle America Democrats Obama went to great pains to woo. The rows of VFW ballcaps and suspiciously well-dressed protesters [ http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/05/boxer-protesters-too-well-dressed-to-be-sincere/ ] bespeak a contingent of Hillary Democrats and even the ballyhooed Obamacans, convinced by Obama’s moderate shtick and now left wondering what they got themselves into. I’m getting psyched about my town hall meeting Tuesday. I’m a little nervous because I have noone to go with me but I can do it. My son wants to go but he is 12. Do you think it is ok to bring a 12 yr. old there with me? I think it should be but just wondering what some PUMAS think?

He is actually more knowledgeable than most adults I talk to. My husband went upstairs to check on him the other night and came down and said, “What other 12 yr. old is sitting around watching a news show about politics do you think?” He is fascinated by politics. I told him he might want to consider majoring in political science.

I called my congressmen up today (again) and left a message asking what part of the word “representative” they don’t understand. They are no longer representing those who elected them; they are only representing themselves and what their deluded party leaders want, not “we the people” anymore.

Does the phrase “taxation without representation” bring back any memories of history classes about the American Revolution? I fear we are going to be having another one, if they ram this through against our will.

It will definitely be on video. The last time she had something, a week or two ago, she wasn’t there but her staff was. It got pretty hairy and her staff was having people arrested! it was all over the news here so they will for sure cover this one. She’s holding 3 on Tuesday so I don’t know if mine will be on tape or not.

The bill does not say you must set up an advanced medical directive. Right? Although I support having one, but who knows what it will look like after all these professionals get through with you.

The arrangements for palliative care and hospice in place of treatment to prolong life is ok, IMO, but the bill does not confine itself to necessarily fatal illnesses. It contains abstract conditions such as chronic, progressive or life-limiting. The bill allows doctors to make an actionable medical order to limit some or all interventions. Doesn’t this give the government power to demand withholding treatment?

Is it mandatory that a person 65 or over to have the consultation?

This is what a representative said, but consider he may not have read the bill.

Rep. Blumenauer Defending ACP in H.R. 3200

America’s Affordable Health Choices Act (H.R. 3200) contains a provision (section 1233) that would provide Medicare coverage for people talk to their doctor about their wishes and care preferences at the end of life. This has prompted some groups to falsely claim that care planning consultations include “euthanasia,” that physicians would be required to “recommend a method for death” and that such consultations would be “mandatory every five years.” These claims are all blatantly false.
The provision included in H.R. 3200 simply allows Medicare to pay for a conversation between a patient and their doctor if the patient wishes to speak about their preferences and values. This benefit would be purely voluntary, and patients do not need to have this consultation if they do not wish to do so. The new Medicare benefit would allow doctors to be compensated for these conversations every five years, and more frequently if a patient has a life-limiting illness or health status changes.

Taggles, I met you many times in Denver and I have blogged with you for over a year, mainly on PUMApac before you started Widdershins.

Now this is ‘your’ blog and I see you have warned everyone that you will delete their message if you don’t like it…but is is a very sad day when you get so upset with fellow PUMAs and say something like what you said to Murphy.

This isn’t about blog turf, this isn’t about being more of a ‘liberal’ then someone else.
