Roger Simon defends Lucia Whalen, the woman maligned as a racist for making the 911 call that sent Sgt. Crowley to Professor Gates’ home:
“In reality, only Whalen, the woman who called 911 on July 16 to report a possible break-in at the Cambridge, Mass., home of Gates, acted responsibly from beginning to end in this whole affair.
And she doesn’t even get a free drink out of it.”
Speaking of race issues in Boston — our longtime Mayor, Tom Menino, was unequivocal about the fate of the Boston Police Officer who referred to Gates as a “jungle bunny” in a viciously vitriolic and arrogant letter to the Boston Globe:
“He’s gone, g-o-n-e. I don’t care, it’s like cancer, you don’t keep those cancers around.”
Nice job Mr. Mayor, I couldn’t agree more. But (you KNEW there was a “But” coming, didn’t you?) my first reaction after being shocked that there are police officers so unrepentantly IGNORANT on the force is: Hmmmm, do police officers get fired for sending emails in which they refer to their ex-wives as cunts or sluts or bitches? Do they get fired if they pass along jokes like the one I heard yesterday:
“What’s the first thing a woman does when she gets back from the battered women’s clinic?
The god damned dishes if she knows what’s good for her.”
Good one!
I don’t know. Maybe police officers and other public officials, like the NYPD police assistant who was fired Monday after referring to obama as O-dumb-a on her Facebook page* while she was at work, ARE fired for sexist “jokes” and anti-woman tirades.
But, somehow I doubt it.
Which reminds me, it’s been reported that Gates himself was one of the first to malign the 911 caller, Lucia Whalen, by yelling at Crowley: “Who you gonna believe? A white woman or a black man?” As a commenter at The Confluence so aptly pointed out, take the modifiers out, and that question becomes: “Who you gonna believe? A woman or a man?”
*The case of Officer Barrett seems cut and dried to me — he should be fired. (Taggles raises the excellent question: What if, instead of Sgt. Crowley, who by all accounts seems to be an exemplary and well-respected officer, the cretin Justin Barrett had been sent to respond to the call at Prof. Gates’ house? What if Gates had hauled off yelling at a closet racist and virulently bitter man like Barrett? Would Gates be dead now? That is a serious thought to ponder.
On the other hand, if you can be fired for referring to obama as “O-dumb-a” on your private Facebook page, our right to free speech seems to be pretty freakin’ fragile these days.
While Crowley, Gates, and Obama enjoy the Beer Summit in the Man Cave tonight, I think I’ll raise a glass of chilled cheap chardonnay to Ms. Whalen, the left-out lady who did everything right but got all the blame (oh, and death threats).
You may not know this, but chardonnay goes really excellently with CUPCAKES!

You never know what it will take but she said what showed her his true colors was the comment about the “stupidity” of the cop’s actions. All day every day obama is slammed on this site. many of the slams (while none that I have seen are race based) are offensive to many people. That is the essence of the first ammendment. We actually can be offensive. We can insult each other without legal sanction. However, the first amendment has been encroached on by so many PC police, that it has been weakened and at our peril.
The Kluckers in the KKK are free to say very offensive things as well as the Fools in the Black Panthers. That speach is protected and it should be.

What’s being overlooked is that Crowley either erronously or deliberately put in his report that the Ms. Whalen had said that she saw “two black men” trying to break in.
No one is asking Sgt. Crowley why he would report this and if it was a mistake, why hasn’t he said so?
I would bet that if it had been a man who had made the 911 call, he would not have been totally left out of the picture and ignored and would have been invited along with the other two boyz to the WH.
Yet another example showing that neither the MSM (run by men) nor the president really like and respect women.

I worked as an Assistant District Attorney and can tell you that the police and the 911 dispatchers are trying to identify the possible suspects and to describe them.
The first descriptor is gender, the second is race, the third is age, etc. Those are not racist profiling, they are attempts to describe the bad guy so that the police can find him or her.
All this focus on the the police use of race is a fantasy that any officer, prosecutor or defense attorney would tell you is poppycock. (there must be at least 3 puns in that word).
The officer may or may not be a racist, but it is his job to describe the perpetrator in a way that other officers can use to find him. Race is a good descriptor as is gender.

That would be correct if he had NOT stated that the 911 caller said she saw two black men breaking in the house.
He should have been more specific in his report because as a result of his doing this, she was attacked and maligned just as Crowley was. The difference is that she was not treated with the same respect and concern as Crowley for wrongly being accused of being a racist and Crowley could have at least spoken up when it was clear that the 911 caller was being threatened and called a racist all over the media and the blogs.
No report should be so open ended that it looses the truth of what was actually reported in the process. Having worked as a legal assistant, I do know these reports should make it clear that the 911 caller did not state whether they were black or not and that she had only responded to the dispatcher that one of them may have been an hispanic. That changes the report in a very significant way.

Police reports are after the fact attempts of the police to report the events. They are very rarely corrected especially for the minor event of a disorderly charge.
The caller was maligned because mindless people can not allow anyone to use race as a descriptor which all of us do and should. It is perfectly appropriate for a person to describe another person as the “redhead” of the “black guy” or the “Irisher.” Those descriptors become insulting only in context and that context is not one that you will see in a police report.
There is a profound difference between a mistake and “looses the truth.” The 911 caller was not mistreated by the police officer she was mistreated by a bunch of ignorant jerks who substituted race for a social conscience and public duty. Had she said two black guys are breaking into the house she would still have been doing all of us a great service. She is a hero and should be seen as one.

When an officer responds to a call to a home. He must enter the home to make sure that the person is not being forced to make the I am OK statement.
Many times on a Domestic violence call a woman will come to door and say I am ok. The police must enter home and make sure. MANY times the man is hiding in the home and the woman was threatened with further injury.
Can you imagine if officer left and Crowley was assaulted by someone in hiding. OMG there would be more than a summit.

You’re right. When my son was 2 yrs. old he called 911 without my knowledge, by accident. It was at my sister’s house and the police called her house. She didn’t answer at first and by the time she got to it they were already leaving a message. So, the police came and insisted on coming in to make sure everyone was okay and they looked around her apartment to make sure there wasn’t someone hiding there or something. I’ll never forget it. It was Halloween too. He was a little stinker. (my son, not the cop.

This is reponse to MamaPuma: I disagree. You would be correct if this had not gotten the overwhelming media attention it did. Also, Crowley certainly looked for and got support from his colleagues concerning the truth about him. Why not return the favor to the woman who made the call? Since he was appalled at the treatment he got, it stands to reason that he, more than anyone else, would have seen the value of stepping in and saying early on that she did not actually say there were two black men breaking in. The rules change in how these things should be handled when the situation escalates to the fever pitch this one did and the resulting damage it was doing to the most innocent person in the story.

What happened to Ms. Whalen didn’t happen as a result of an error in the police report.
It happened as a result of the Blogger Boyz’ knee-jerk hatred and willingness to threaten violence against anyone–but especially a woman–who’s seen as opposing Obama. This incident is only about Skip Gates in the minds of Skip Gates, his immediate friends and family, and the Cambridge police force. I am hopeful that more good than bad, will eventually come out of this infamous interaction between a white police officer and an African American academic.

What really gets me about the whole situation, is that the disparity in the arrest and conviction of black and minority men is directly related to the lack of equal opportunity employment and education. That is what BO should be doing something about. So instead, he promotes the use of alcohol, that is related to increased crime. JACKASSES.

Just to share… Today in our local newspaper there was a comic strip that had a man scraping his BO bumper Sticker off of his bumper and saying…. I acted stupidly…. Just heard on Fox that O’Reilly’s suggestion to Bobby Jindal of Louisiana (ACORN headquarters there?) to investigate ACORN may have had an effect. Apparently LA attorney Buddy Caldwell has said that the Public Corruption and Special Prosecution unit is looking into ACORN and its affiliates. They have set up a phone line for anyone with information about ACORN to call 225-326-6120. Let’s talk about this before we encourage anyone to call – any concerns? Will cross post on the Investigating ACORN thread.

DWP… Idyllwild is beautiful right now…. I know I use to live there… of course, that was about 25 years ago… But, I just love the winter and really enjoyed the summer, spring and fall….. But, the road up is not for the light hearted… It is very narrow and can be intimidating to those who are not use to mountain driving…. ( Remember, Murphy)

‘Clunkers’ Auto Rebate Plan So Popular That It’s Broke

WASHINGTON — New-car shoppers appear to have already snapped up all the $1 billion that Congress appropriated for the “cash for clunkers” program, leading the Transportation Department to tell auto dealers Thursday night to stop offering the rebates.
But a White House official said the program had not been suspended, creating confusion about its status. The program offers $3,500 to $4,500 for people who trade in an old car for a new one with higher fuel economy.

U.S. Adviser’s Blunt Memo on Iraq: Time ‘to Go Home’

WASHINGTON — A senior American military adviser in Baghdad has concluded in an unusually blunt memo that Iraqi forces suffer from entrenched deficiencies but are now able to protect the Iraqi government, and that it is time “for the U.S. to declare victory and go home.”
The memo offers a look at tensions that emerged between Iraqi and American military officers at a sensitive moment when American combat troops met a June 30 deadline to withdraw from Iraq’s cities, the first step toward an advisory role. The Iraqi government’s forceful moves to assert authority have concerned some American officers, though senior American officials insisted that cooperation had improved.
Prepared by Col. Timothy R. Reese, an adviser to the Iraqi military’s Baghdad command, the memorandum details Iraqi military weaknesses in scathing language, including corruption, poor management and the inability to resist Shiite political pressure. Extending the American military presence beyond August 2010, he argues, will do little to improve the Iraqis’ military performance while fueling growing resentment of Americans.

WASHINGTON — It took Representative Dan Maffei of New York two tries, $4 million and the retirement of a Republican incumbent to win his House seat last year. After all that, he wants to avoid becoming a one-term wonder because of an unpopular vote on health care.
“We can’t afford to make enemies,” said Mr. Maffei, a former Congressional aide and a Democratic member of the freshman class that played a role this week in slowing House consideration of a health insurance overhaul, upending plans by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to meet President Obama’s goal of approving a bill before the August recess.

You have that wrong..unlike what you have read it has now come out that the…2 blk men w/backpacks…was told to the other Officer speaking outside with the 911 caller and the ORIGINAL older lady who stopped Mrs Whalen, and asked her to call 911.
It was the older lady who saw the 2 blk men and what she thought was them breaking into the house and told the officer outside, when they arrived. She did not have a cell phone and she stopped Mrs Whalen and asked her to call 911. She stated on the tape, if the lady had not stopped her she would not have noticed them.
She got the raw end of the deal..just as the Blk Officer has, that I posted above # 105… her for being a good citizen.

Photo op, shoot, freeze the moment, pretend it never happened but if it did, then Obama dealt with it. So that should wipeout any stories about teachable moments and race problems. Of course she was also the host of the first Durbin Confrence and that is something … Oh wait , the US boycotts the Durbin confrences due to the context of the confrences . (condemning Israel)

“In the United States, she joined the faculty at Columbia University (Obama’s alma mater) — a campus that has become a center of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic behavior by faculty members. Among the faculty members is long-time anti-Israel activist Rashid Khalidi, who was a close friend of Obama’s during his Chicago days, and whom Obama credited with teaching him about the Middle East. Did Khalidi suggest to Obama that Robinson be awarded the most prestigious non-military medal an American President can award someone?”
“The bestowing of the Medal of Freedom on Mary Robinson is a travesty. Beyond that, it is a slap in the face to the pro-Israel community. Obama just met with the leaders of a collection of Jewish groups, ostensibly to quell their concerns about his approach towards Israel. Barely two weeks later, he gives an award to a person who has actively campaigned against Israel. Is this just a sign he couldn’t care less about what those leaders think or feel?”

Is this the same Mary Robinson who served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997-2002 and President of Ireland fro 1990 to 1997?
Is this the same Mary Robinson who is currently Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders?
Someone enlighten me . . .seems like quite a contradiction!

Rancho, yep — I believe anti-Israel sentiment is much stronger in Europe than it is in the USA. The relatively large percentage of Jews here compared to many countries in Europe (combined with THEIR much larger % of Muslim immigrants) probably has something to do with it.
Yesterday’s news about the “honor torture” of the 27 year old divorced mother of five by her father because he believed she had a boyfriend was an excellent reminder of why all freedom loving people should applaud a Freedom Award given to a person who supports Palestine.
