“Another must read from Matt Taibbi about the United States of Goldman Sachs. Paul Krugman’s headline writer is funny this morning as well. From Taibbi:
“So what does this Goldman profit number mean? This is the final evidence that the bailouts were a political decision to use the power of the state to redirect society’s resources upward, on a grand scale. It was a selective rescue of a small group of chortling jerks who must be laughing all the way to the Hamptons every weekend about how they fleeced all of us at the very moment the game should have been up for all of them.
Now, the counter to this charge is, well, hey, they made that money fair and square, legally, how can you blame them? They’re just really smart!
Bullshit.”
For your shot of righteous indignation, read it all.
Record unemployment in June. In Michigan the rate is now at 15.2%, which doesn’t include the number of underemployed or those who have given up looking for a job.

Not for nothing but must be noted. Goldman in loaded with left wing supporters, and all the former honchos now in government are big lefty’s: Paulson, Corzine etc.,
Had Goldman been led by moderates or conservatives, it would have been left to die.
Top down works only when it fuels companies that create jobs. At Goldman, it only kept the scumbags in the manner they are accustomed to stealing.
For example, you cut taxes or raise depreciation allowances so that a business can hire more people and buy more equipment. That is a good example of Top Down. More people have jobs… they spend money, economy turns.
Goldman is just an example of high profit zero job growth government support.

For the many posters below who commented on Jimmy Carter’s resigning from his church in protest of the subjugation of women, there is an interesting conversation about it going on over at the Tennessee Guerilla Women site (link in the PUMApac blogroll). Whoever said the story had a “deja vu” vibe was correct.
This wasn’t the first time Carter’s resigned from his church…but it’s a long complicated split between two branches of the church. This was the “moderate” branch of the Baptist church. He previously left the more fundamental branch.
What’s interesting is that the hardliner branch had racist views, but it took ten years in the “moderate” branch to notice the sexist views!
What a surprise, huh?
But however overdue this is, and however a baby step, and however ridiculous it will be if Carter’s pronouncement leads to the “discovery” of gender apartheid because a man has finally said it, it’s indeed a milestone.
My guess? The Patriarchy will ignore it. And no other men will step forward to also denounce the subjugation of women.
Zee 07.17.09 at 2:48 pm

Actually, I still get a lot of email from antiwar groups, and they still are protesting, still speaking out, and still planning marches and events.
And naturally, they’re all still being ignored by the media.

thanks Zee, gave me a new quote of the day!
“Women and girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God.
I HAVE been a practising Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years. My faith is a source of strength and comfort to me, as religious beliefs are to hundreds of millions of people around the world. So my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful and difficult. It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the convention’s leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be “subservient” to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service.”

FemiSex anchors the Jimmy Carter statement perfectly. Admitting that his stance comes belatedly, too belatedly, and acknowledging that he supported the inexperienced, misogynistic male over the woman with the experience and gravitas to lead our country.
But she shows how rare it is for a man to step up and face this issue, and why. Her rundown on Obama’s wink and nudge to Muslim men is dead on.

Michelina, the point I think the CATO article is trying to make is that they are attempting to circumvent the political ramifications (the Australians took to the street in the 80’s when their government pushed the issue) of requiring a “federal” ID by pressuring the states into issuing the equivalent in the form of “conforming” drivers’ licenses.

scarlet, it looks as if the US Treasury scrapped the plan to hire a cartoonist to lift the spirit of its workers:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_treasury_cartoonist
I still am wistful over this one. I would love for there to be more jobs for artists.
The Boston Globe used to have a poet who wrote daily verses to spoof the news of the day. (I’m not sure if the Nation still employs a poet but they used to.)
In Cuba they hire readers to read novels to workers as they roll cigars.
In Columbia one politician came up with the brilliant idea to hire mimes for a city with a lot of pedestrian deaths. The mimes mocked the dangerous habits of reckless pedestrians and bad drivers and the death rate went down and the problem got a lot of publicity.
The arts can be employed in a multitude of venues!
Now, you would think in this economy, comics and cartoonists would have an uptick in business! But things are bad even for them….

Democrats splinter in contentious health care reform debate
Posted: 04:50 PM ET
President Obama says health care is at the top of his domestic agenda.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The fight over health care reform took center stage on Capitol Hill on Friday, as the House Democratic leadership stepped up its push for passage of a bill before the August congressional recess.
An influential group of Senate moderates, however, broke with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama by releasing a letter urging a slower timetable.
Obama, who has put health care reform at the top of his domestic agenda, pushed Congress to get the job done.
“Now is not the time to slow down, and now is certainly not the time to lose heart,” the president said from the White House.
“Those who are betting against this happening this year are badly mistaken,” he said. “It will happen this year.”

For $.88 (large envelope rate) it will arrive at the DNC – make that ONC which still indicates a Washington DC address which is, assuredly, for appearances’ sake.
By now I’ve sent about 8 such contributions, most often to DCCC. The fact that I am still receiving solicitations from the Party against the people makes it perfectly clear that they have still not gotten my message. However, the postal clerks know!

Boehner Floor Statement on Democrats’ $700 Million Welfare Program for Horses
WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) gave the following remarks on the floor of the House today during debate on the Restore Our American Mustangs Act (H.R.1018), a $700 million welfare program for horses scheduled by Democrats despite the fact that the federal deficit and unemployment continue to soar:
CLICK TO PLAY
“Mr. Speaker, I think I must be confused. The unemployment rate in our country is at over 9.5 percent as I speak. Unemployment in my home state of Ohio is now over 11 percent. Two million Americans have been put out of work since the ‘stimulus’ bill was signed into law. Our budget deficit is already, this year, over $1 trillion and expected to reach nearly $2 trillion.
“Faced with this news, what’s the House doing today? Talking about a $700 million welfare program for wild horses and burros. Is it any wonder, Mr. Speaker, that our constituents may be confused about their Congress?
“Let’s get this straight. We’re debating a bill to spend millions of dollars to save wild horses, but yesterday, Democrats in the House blocked Republicans from offering an amendment to prevent federal dollars from being spent on saving unborn children. Oh yeah, $700 million today to save wild horses and burros – and yesterday we weren’t allowed to offer an amendment to save the lives of unborn kids. That doesn’t make sense to me, but I think most of my constituents would look up and go, well, that’s just Washington being Washington.
“And it doesn’t make any sense that we’re debating a welfare program about wild horses when the American people really want to know, where are the jobs? Debating this bill, I frankly think, is an insult to the American people who are out there looking for work and small businesses who are looking for customers and trying to keep their doors open. If Democrats want to do something serious here in this House they should join with Republicans and focus our efforts on those things that will help create jobs in America, which, after all, is the number one priority of the American people.
“We probably ought to do a few other things if we’re going to talk about creating jobs and keeping jobs in America. Maybe we ought to scrap Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax which will cost about two and a half million jobs every year over the next 10 years. Or, maybe we should shelve the health care bill which is being debated in committee as we speak – which is going to take private health care away from millions of Americans and shove them into some government-run system – and on top of all that, has a giant tax on small businesses, taxes employment and will lead to greater job losses in our country.
“If we’re serious about wanting to create jobs, maybe, maybe, we could work together to bring the American Energy Act to the floor of this House – our all of the above energy strategy which will create well over a million new jobs here in America, bring us more energy to the marketplace with lower prices, reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil, and guess what? If we do all of the above, we’ll actually have much cleaner air than the bill that passed here last month.
“Mr. Speaker, I think American families and small businesses deserve better than what they’re getting out of this Congress. They expect us to work together on their behalf. They expect us to deal with issues to get this economy moving again and help create jobs, not to be debating a $700 million program – welfare program – to save wild horses and burros. I think the gentleman’s amendment is a good amendment. His amendment will cost $500,000. That’s $699,500,000 less than the underlying bill. It would be a step in the right direction so maybe our constituents, Mr. Speaker, would think we’ve got some sense for once in our lives. I yield back.”

(from the NY Post)

PRESIDENT Obama promises that “if you like your health plan, you can keep it,” even after he reforms our health-care system. That’s untrue. The bills now before Congress would force you to switch to a managed-care plan with limits on your access to specialists and tests.
Two main bills are being rushed through Congress with the goal of combining them into a finished product by August. Under either, a new government bureaucracy will select health plans that it considers in your best interest, and you will have to enroll in one of these “qualified plans.” If you now get your plan through work, your employer has a five-year “grace period” to switch you into a qualified plan. If you buy your own insurance, you’ll have less time.
And as soon as anything changes in your contract — such as a change in copays or deductibles, which many insurers change every year — you’ll have to move into a qualified plan instead (House bill, p. 16-17).
When you file your taxes, if you can’t prove to the IRS that you are in a qualified plan, you’ll be fined thousands of dollars — as much as the average cost of a health plan for your family size — and then automatically enrolled in a randomly selected plan (House bill, p. 167-168).
It’s one thing to require that people getting government assistance tolerate managed care, but the legislation limits you to a managed-care plan even if you and your employer are footing the bill (Senate bill, p. 57-58). The goal is to reduce everyone’s consumption of health care and to ensure that people have the same health-care experience, regardless of ability to pay.
Nowhere does the legislation say how much health plans will cost, but a family of four is eligible for some government assistance until their household income reaches $88,000 (House bill, p. 137). If you earn more than that, you’ll have to pay the cost no matter how high it goes.
The price tag for this legislation is a whopping $1.04 trillion to $1.6 trillion (Congressional Budget Office estimates). Half of the tab comes from tax increases on individuals earning $280,000 or more, and these new taxes will double in 2012 unless savings exceed predicted costs (House bill, p. 199). The rest of the cost is paid for by cutting seniors’ health benefits under Medicare.
There’s plenty of waste in Medicare, but the Congressional Budget Office estimates only 1 percent of the savings under the legislation will be from curbing waste, fraud and abuse. That means the rest will likely come from reducing what patients get.
One troubling provision of the House bill compels seniors to submit to a counseling session every five years (and more often if they become sick or go into a nursing home) about alternatives for end-of-life care (House bill, p. 425-430). The sessions cover highly sensitive matters such as whether to receive antibiotics and “the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration.”
This mandate invites abuse, and seniors could easily be pushed to refuse care. Do we really want government involved in such deeply personal issues?
Shockingly, only a portion of the money accumulated from slashing senior benefits and raising taxes goes to pay for covering the uninsured. The Senate bill allocates huge sums to “community transformation grants,” home visits for expectant families, services for migrant workers — and the creation of dozens of new government councils, programs and advisory boards slipped into the last 500 pages.
The most recent ABC News/Washington Post poll (June 21) finds that 83 percent of Americans are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the quality of their health care, and 81 percent are similarly satisfied with their health insurance.
They have good reason to be. If you’re diagnosed with cancer, you have a better chance of surviving it in the United States than anywhere else, according to the Concord Five Continent Study. And the World Health Organization ranked the United States No. 1 out of 191 countries for being responsive to patients’ needs, including providing timely treatments and a choice of doctors.
Congress should pursue less radical ways to cover the uninsured. We have too much to lose with this legislation.

Yes, Mr. Boehner heard from me this morning after I listened to his ridiculous speech on the House floor in support of the cattle industry and their abuse of federal land to graze their ‘product’ on land that I pay for with my taxes. The argument against it is so stupid that the bill passed overwhelmingly and is expected to cost the taxpayer a whopping $1.67. I reminded him that taxpayers are getting fed up with Obama and the dem congress, but if he wants to have any hope of taking back Congress, repubs have got to stop selling out everyone and everything for big business.

I’ll try, but I only have the c-span channel that covers the House so I can’t keep up with what the Senate is doing. I’ll check online periodically and try to keep tabs on the bill. This bill is pushback against the gutting of the laws protecting these horses done by the Bush administration over the past 8 years.

I got to meet Walter Cronkite – Oh – 20 years ago – at a cocktail party. I’m nobody, but he was so gracious. He had just put out a “coffe table” book, with an artist named Ray Ellis. Walter wrote about sailing and Ray did the artwork. We chatted about the book.

May Walter Cronkite RIP. I grew up when he was THE news source.
I’m the kind who generally just likes to sit and read and lurk and just come in when I find a link that I think you might be interested in. I found one that I found interesting. There was a study done how differently men and women are “hard wired” (my words). Not sure how much I agree with on it or not, but agree or disagree it is interesting:
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1911103,00.html?xid=rss-topstories
BigCatLover 07.17.09 at 9:55 pm
Read the study to determine the different way adolescent boys and girls interact socially and it reached the possible reason why they react differently:
Perhaps it’s evidence that evolution has programmed boys to compete within large groups, so they can learn to eliminate rivals for women — and that girls have been programmed to judge, one-on-one, who would be the most protective father for offspring.
I think they need to consider that it is society that has programmed their responses, not evolution.

Dear Friend,
Just before midnight Thursday, the Senate finally passed the
Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act as an amendment to
the defense authorization bill. This legislation is long
overdue, and now we’re finally on the verge of getting it signed
into law.
But our right-wing opponents are going to launch a last-ditch

The Matthew Shepard Amendment to the defense appropriations bill passed with 63 yes votes. I don’t think the problem is with this amendment. It is the money for the Raptor 22 that Obama opposes and threatened to not sign the bill if funding for it was included. Barbara Boxer’s letter doesn’t mention that.
LGBT history was made late last night when U.S. Senate passed the Matthew Shepard Act as an amendment to a defense appropriations bill. This is the most dramatic federal endorsement of LGBT rights in history and the first major achievement made during the Obama administration.
UPDATE: Well, you knew there’d be a snag with attaching the bill to DOD funding.
Though the amendment garnered three votes more than necessary to reach cloture, the fate of the hate crimes measure is now partially linked to $1.75 billion in funding for F-22 fighter jets that is also included in the DOD legislation. President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates both oppose the F-22 program and a White House spokesperson said the president will not sign a DOD bill that continues to fund the program.
“The President has long supported the hate crimes bill and gave his personal commitment to Judy Shepard that we will enact an inclusive bill,” said Shin Inouye, referring to Shepard’s Oval Office visit with the president earlier this year. “Unfortunately, the President will have to veto the Defense Authorization bill if it includes wasteful spending for additional F-22s. The collective judgment of the Service Chiefs and Secretaries of the military departments is that the current program is sufficient to meet operational requirements. A Presidential veto would not indicate any change in President Obama’s commitment to seeing the hate crimes bill enacted.”
Senators Carl Levin and John McCain have offered a bi-partisan amendment to remove the F-22 funding that is scheduled for a vote Monday, but insiders say the count is unclear. If the amendment fails and President Obama vetoes the bill, it will be sent back to the Senate for a rewrite. A Democratic Senate aide said Senator Reid was optimistic, nonetheless, that hate crimes would ultimately make the final version of DOD authorization. “This was a good vote,” said the aide. “Senator Reid is hopeful that we can keep this language in the final bill.”

Wow, I have to admitt that Jimmy used to be my hero. I have books signed by him and he was the only president I can remember in my life as being worthy of my respect. Well that was until he started paling around with Hamas and then made the two unforgivable mistakes of first supporting Al Gore for a posible run in 2008 and then supporting Obama.
So much for caring about the fair and just treatment of women. How convienient of you to wait until now when HRC has been marginalized and Sarah Palin has been forced into temporary retreat.

Dances 97 Should we also prowl against those who are bring suits against Obama over the birth certificate issue?
————————————————————
Obama doesn’t have to spend a penny to defend himself against these cases. He only needs to present his birth certificate just like John McCain and Barry Goldwater who also had similar legal challenges did.
I agree that a prowl against the bogus law suits Palin has had to face would be complicated. But this is how Obama wins elections and destroys his opponents. Something should be done. Sorry that I am not sure what just yet.
Juliette 07.19.09 at 12:43 am
The one thing that Jimmy Carter got right was his statement:
“I have always felt very deeply that the ultimate interpreter of the scripture is Jesus Christ.”
Saying that he is losing his religion has only served to confuse many. Jimmy Carter has not become an atheist, although you will see his statements proudly posted at many atheist web-sites.
I just think that his timing is shameful, and tainted with opportunism. The new liberal dems constantly make excuses for Islam by trying to draw parallels between it and Christianity or Judaism. I would think that Carter who has been to many more Muslim nations than I have, would be a little more concerned with women who are being stoned to death then women who cannot become baptist ministers. Why did it take him so long to object to his church’s stance on women anyway? Possibly because of recent articles which contain words like Hillary, take off your Burka or referring to HRC as Obama’s other wife. He knows that the dem’s misogyny is beginning to draw attention. This seems like a convienient excuse to redirect attention to his own version of Obama’s apology tour.
I am sorry, and it pains me to be disillusioned by a man I once respected so much. But he is displaying the same characteristics of the other Obamafallators in the democratic party.
If Carter is so concerned with women and their aspirations, perhaps he should lose his party, the dems.
