Happy rainy Monday morning Pumas! (will it EVER end??)
SO, in addition to the delicious coffee, we also have CUPCAKES! to savor this morning as we reflect on obama’s two least favorite Father’s Day gifts yesterday. First, this heartfelt message from Cinie to her Number 1 Celebritician on his Special Day, and then lo! news arrives from Rasmussen that obama’s crappy performance is finally catching up to him. His approval numbers have fallen into negative territory for the first time. More people strongly disapprove of his performance than strongly approve. In fact, 40% of Democrats feel less than strong support for President O’Logo and only 8% of Republicans strongly approve. Holy Smokes.
The mess in Iran does not seem to be helping obama. He apppears a bit wishy-washy, no? Color us Pumas unsurprised by that.
In the political feminist circles I feel most comfortable in, the news of Terry O’Neil’s upset victory in the election for NOW president has been greeted with Hallelujah’s all around. Sounds good to me. Maybe NOW will finally wake up to the late 20th Century and get themselves a blog or something. Then they can ease into the 21st and maybe even set up a Facebook page. Twitter is likely WAAY too scary and modern. Ah, don’t listen to me — this rain is getting to me. I’m really glad O’Neill pulled an upset and will be the first to sign up to NOW’s new Facebook page.
Read PatriotDEMS on the secret government projects obama’s working on as sneakily and stealthily as his predecessor did. Cinie’s hot on that trail too. (They should team up, I think).
Oh, and Paul Krugman, sadly, still believes in ponies. His heart is surely in the right place. And he’s correct in pointing out the preposterousness of the White House and Congress blatantly IGNORING the will of the majority (72% !!) of Americans who REALLY REALLY REALLY want a public, affordable, and universally available option for health insurance. But, Paul, wake up hon. Obama and his crowd NEVER intended to actually reform our health care system. You didn’t believe in the whole Hopey Changey song and dance, did you Paul?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Olive Garden yanks Letterman ads
June 19, 2009, 7:05 PM EST
Zap2it.com
David Letterman is out of the Olive Garden family.
The “When you’re here, you’re family” restaurant chain has pulled its advertising that was scheduled to air this year during “The Late Show,” reports Politico, because it’s not happy with how Letterman acted regarding his jokes about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter.
“We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden,” Sherri Bruen, the company’s guest relations manager, writes in an email to a Letterman critic.
Despite Palin’s accepting the talk show host’s apology for his inappropriate comments, Conservative radio host John Ziegler has been spearheading a campaign to get Letterman fired. A small protest was held Tuesday outside of the “Late Show” studios.
Ziegler has also compiled a list of the show’s advertisers, among them Olive Garden, on his Web site, FireDavidLetterman.com.

39% Now Blame Bad Economy on Obama’s Policies
Monday, June 22, 2009
While most U.S. voters still blame the Bush Administration for the nation’s economic problems, a growing number are inclined to blame President Barack Obama.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of voters now say the country’s economic problems are caused more by the policies Obama has put in place. That’s a 12-point jump from a month ago.

North Korea threatens to harm US if attacked
Jun 22, 7:15 AM (ET)
By JAE-SOON CHANG
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea reminded the U.S. on Monday that it has nuclear weapons and warned it will strike back if attacked, as a U.S. destroyer continued to trail a North Korean cargo ship suspected of carrying illicit weapons.
The Kang Nam, previously involved in weapons shipments, is the first vessel monitored under new U.N. sanctions adopted after the North’s nuclear test last month. It could become a test case for interception of North Korean ships at sea – something Pyongyang has said it would consider an act of war.

‘The Responsible Left’: Funding Obama’s Expanding Wars
New York Democrat Anthony Weiner, who voted against the war funding in May — when it didn’t matter — only to vote Tuesday with the pro-war Dems, sounded like an imbecile when he made this statement after the vote: “We are in the process of wrapping up the wars. The president needed our support.” What planet is Weiner living on? “Wrapping up the wars?” Last time I checked, there are 21,000 more US troops heading to Afghanistan alongside a surge in contractors there, including a 29% increase in armed contractors. Does Weiner think the $106 billion in war funding he voted for is going to pay for one way tickets home for the troops? What he voted for was certainly not the “Demolition of the 80 Football-field-size US Embassy in Baghdad Act of 2009.” To cap off this idiocy, Weiner basically admitted he is a fraud when he said the bill he voted in favor of “still sucks.”
Jan Schakowsky, who has done some incredibly important work on Blackwater and the privatized war machine, also voted against the supplemental in May, but switched her vote on Tuesday. “I do believe my president is a peacemaker,” Schakowsky said. “I’m going to give him what he wants.” A peacemaker who is expanding war? Moreover, what happened to the system of “checks and balances?” If Congressmembers, especially anti-war ones like Schakowsky, start just giving the president “what he wants,” then where is the peoples’ voice?
How are these people sleeping at night?
Obviously these folks are partisans or else they wouldn’t be Democrats, but this “Dear Leader knows best” mentality is cultish.
Republican Rep. Ron Paul, who, whatever one thinks of him, has been consistently opposed to these wars, put it best when he rose on the floor Tuesday to speak against the war funding: “I wonder what happened to all of my colleagues who said they were opposed to the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wonder what happened to my colleagues who voted with me as I opposed every war supplemental request under the previous administration. It seems, with very few exceptions, they have changed their position on the war now that the White House has changed hands.”

Poor suckers
Obama’s promise of a new beginning now hollow
By Joseph L. Galloway | McClatchy Newspapers
Who stole our change?
Who hijacked a popular uprising that was going to put a stop to business as usual in Washington, D.C.?
What happened to Barack Obama on his way to the White House?
Who stole our change?
The Republicans have been so busy trying to paint President Obama as a socialist, as a radical, as a Marxist, as a Muslim, as the Devil, that they haven’t even noticed that he has become one of them.
Oh, he can still talk the talk and he does that incessantly. But he seemingly can’t walk the walk. He may still sound like a revolutionary but more and more he looks and acts like George W. Bush, albeit a George W. Bush who can speak a complete sentence in the English language.
And bit-by-bit the possibility of change disappeared; bit-by-bit the hope of a renewed and reinvigorated American democracy and way of government faded away. Those who had held a dream in their hand closed their hand and crushed it.

240 Members of Congress Disagree with the President: The Fed Needs More Accountability
By: Jane Hamsher Monday June 22, 2009 7:09 am
The President wants to give the Federal Reserve more power to oversee systemic risk in the economy:
Obama, in an interview shown on the CBS Early Show, said the administration wants an overseer that “is accountable and clear when it comes to these large systemic firms that could potentially bring down the entire financial system. The Fed has the expertise and the credibility I think to do it.”
Asked whether lapses by the Fed contributed to last year’s crisis, Obama said, “It wasn’t the Fed where regulations broke down here.”
But 240 members of Congress disagree that the Fed is “accountable and clear,” and there are now 239 bipartisan cosponsors to Ron Paul’s H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, which would give the GAO the authority to audit the Fed and report its findings to Congress. Because right now, the Fed has loaned trillions of dollars in bailout money, and refuses to say where it went.

In April, 2009, Senator Feingold introduced (and gathered 24 co-sponsors already) legislation, S. 787, to fundamentally change the definition of “water” under control of the federal government:

`(25) WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES- The term `waters of the United States’ means all waters subject to the ebb and flow of the tide, the territorial seas, and all interstate and intrastate waters and their tributaries, including lakes, rivers, streams (including intermittent streams), mudflats, sandflats, wetlands, sloughs, prairie potholes, wet meadows, playa lakes, natural ponds, and all impoundments of the foregoing, to the fullest extent that these waters, or activities affecting these waters, are subject to the legislative power of Congress under the Constitution.’.

When it comes to carbon, Boulder finding it’s tough to make the cut
Faced with a looming deadline and lagging results in its efforts to cut carbon-dioxide emissions, city leaders recently vowed to redouble their efforts.
The City Council earlier this month voted to raise the city’s “carbon tax” — a charge based on how much electricity one consumes — to the maximum $21 per year for residences and $94 per year for businesses.
Boulder officials are crafting a plan to send technicians door-to-door to encourage residents to install more-efficient light bulbs or weatherstripping. (Are these the government snope green jobs that Obama has promised us? Official Light Bulb Changer Technician. Maybe ACORN can manage this, too.)
In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol called for carbon- dioxide cutbacks — 183 countries signed the treaty; the U.S. did not.
And so, American communities and states, including Colorado, set their own reduction goals. Boulder pegged its goals to the Kyoto Protocol. Colorado has a first target of a 20 percent cut from 2005 levels by 2020.

ACORN drops tarnished name and moves to silence critics

Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) leaders are using the threat of a law suit to silence and intimidate critics, according to current and former members of the liberal activist group.
In a letter dated June 11 an attorney for ACORN advised top whistleblowers that their unauthorized use of the organization’s name could make them liable for monetary damages and injunctive relief.
Wade Rathke, who founded the organization, announced on his blog that ACORN International has officially changed its name to “Community Organizations International.”

ACORN executives have also changed their organization’s name, which was tarnished by investigations in at least 14 states of allegations of voter registration fraud during the 2008 presidential campaign, and charges by current and former members of financial mismanagement and misrepresentation.
The new name will let ACORN leaders continue their operations without worrying about prior bad publicity, according to Marcel Reid of ACORN 8, a group of present and former members.
“We’ve known for many months now that the name ACORN is going to be retired,” Reid said. “The name has been so damaged to the point where the leadership knows it simply can’t go on as it has with the ACORN label out front and center, especially after all of the reporting.”
In fact, the process has already begun, she noted.
Wade Rathke, who founded the organization, announced on his blog that ACORN International has officially changed its name to “Community Organizations International.”
Reid also said ACORN is in the process of dismantling Citizen’s Consulting Inc. (CCI), a New-Orleans based non-profit, which has been used to maintain centralized financial control, ACORN 8 activists claim. Tax records show that CCI is interlinked with several ACORN affiliates.

Shadowfax, ACORN (aka Wade Rathke) has been all over the world for a long time. In fact, when Rathke was drummed out of the U.S. because of brother Dale’s embezzling a million bucks from the organization(which was quietly sort of paid back by a wealthy member of one of the ‘foundations’ that Soros supports — see Tides), Rathke was never drummed out of the ACORN organization. He just went over to being head of “ACORN International.” So, the name change likely isn’t just to silence critics. It is to place Rathke squarely back at the helm (no matter where on earth he may be now). This guy, I believe, is also a crony (or at least a member of the same ilk of ‘organizers’) as Ayers and the rest of the former SDS, WU kids.

The Oregon Travail
Driving business away with billions in tax hikes.
The Labor Department reported yesterday that Oregon’s unemployment rate soared to 12.4% in May, the nation’s second highest after Michigan’s 14.1%. What to do? If you’re the geniuses in the state legislature in Salem, you naturally raise taxes.
Last week the legislature approved a $2 billion tax hike on personal income and small businesses that haven’t already left the state.
But that isn’t the worst of it. Another revenue raiser will tax hospitals and private health insurance premiums. That’s a good way to encourage private employers to drop their health coverage for workers.

I’m on a fly-by! I remember last year the discussion about whether or not flowers would be accepted and security checks on this that and the other. Anyone have good addresses for cards and/or flowers that might get through security? Cards at the very least?
Can’t stop but please post if you have info. Thanks

I don’t have the money to contribute to flowers (or even to the PAC, for that matter; see previous threads for my financial tale of woe if interested), but even if I did, I guess I probably wouldn’t. Last year, I contributed every possible dollar I could to Hillary’s campaign and then to retire her debt, in addition to working to try to right the wrong of her being robbed of the nomination. When she threw in with BO and started campaigning for him in earnest, I asked to have my money refunded. I never got it, and I sure could use it now. Hillary is not on my ‘shit list’ either, but reality is what it is. She works for BO now, and can’t even speak out as the bold, brilliant, courageous, independent, strong woman she is. She’s a worker bee for what used to be the Democratic Party and its fraud-in-chief. Sad.

In a major policy speech, Sarkozy speaks out against burka:

persephone 06.22.09 at 2:38 pm
woohoooo!!
excerpt:
In a major policy speech, he said the burka – a garment covering women from head to toe – reduced them to servitude and undermined their dignity.
Mr Sarkozy also gave his backing to the establishment of a parliamentary commission to look at whether to ban the wearing of burkas in public.
In 2004, France banned the Islamic headscarves in its state schools.
‘Not welcome’
“We cannot accept to have in our country women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity,” Mr Sarkozy told a special session of parliament in Versailles.
“That is not the idea that the French republic has of women’s dignity.
“The burka is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience. It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic,” the French president said.

`”(25) WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES- The term `waters of the United States’ means all waters subject to the ebb and flow of the tide, the territorial seas, and all interstate and intrastate waters and their tributaries, including lakes, rivers, streams (including intermittent streams), mudflats, sandflats, wetlands, sloughs, prairie potholes, wet meadows, playa lakes, natural ponds, and all impoundments of the foregoing, to the fullest extent that these waters, or activities affecting these waters, are subject to the legislative power of Congress under the Constitution.’”
HP Boston–This has been the definition of “waters of the United States” for some time; nothing new. Your state probably has a similar statute defining “waters of the State.” It doesn’t give the feds or your state government ownership of all the water in the US.
What it does do is allow regulation of development and other activities involving bodies of water. It’s what allows the state to prohibit your neighbor from diverting a stream so that it creates a flood plain on your land. It’s what mandates that wetlands cannot be destroyed without mitigation approved by the USACE. (And the USACE is one of the biggest rubber stamps in government. It’s very rare for them to deny a 404 permit, though they can occasionally get up off their asses sufficiently to turn down an obviously inadequate mitigation plan.)
Hold the panic. No need.

CLEAN WATER RESTORATION ACT S 787
Or The Great Water Heist?
Feingold Bill Gives ALL
US Water To The Feds!
In April, 2009, Senator Feingold introduced (and gathered 24 co-sponsors already) legislation, S. 787, to fundamentally change the definition of “water” under control of the federal government:
cjv 06.22.09 at 4:46 pm

“What it does do is allow regulation of development and other activities involving bodies of water. It’s what allows the state to prohibit your neighbor from diverting a stream so that it creates a flood plain on your land.”
When I gave a quick review of this my immediate interpretation was that ALL waters would fall under Federal Regulation. It seems as if the States would loose any jusrisdiction that they currently do and IMO should have. Hopefully, and very soon, I will research this further if this is the agenda that this bill is going after. And something tells me it also invovles the environmentalist’s agenda that are wooing the adminstration for bucks (aka General Electric and their windmills, as an example).I put nothing, absolutely nothing past any activity in this current adminstraiton is attempting to take total control over every inch, every aspect of every American’s life and turn all of us into servants of the the government.

I found a link also on Terry O’Neill and her association with ACORN, now COI. I wrote off NOW last year when they turned their backs on Hillary. It seems that their agenda is deeper than what they profess to be their mission. Anyone associated with ACORN, now COI, simply tells me that NOW is possibly up to no good.

“Community Activism
Using her background in law to fight important legal battles for feminists, O’Neill has written key amicus briefs at the federal, trial and appellate levels on abortion rights issues for Louisiana NOW, Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union. O’Neill’s community activism includes work with labor unions, Louisiana’s Lesbian and Gay Political Action Caucus, the Mayor of New Orleans’ Task Force on Domestic Violence and ACORN of Louisiana.”

NOW Activists Elect New President Terry O’Neill to Succeed Kim Gandy
Feminist Leadership NOW Team to Usher in a New NOW
ALBANY, NY (06/21/2009)(readMedia)– This weekend members of the National Organization for Women (NOW) cast their votes for a new team of leaders to direct the largest grassroots feminist organization in the country over the next four years. NOW delegates elected Terry O’Neill, who served as the group’s membership vice president from 2001 to 2005, to succeed President Kim Gandy.
Gandy will retire from her office on July 20 due to the organization’s term limits; she has been a leader in NOW for 36 years, with 22 years of service at the national level, including the last eight as president.
“NOW is the organization that fights for the rights of all women no matter the circumstances of their birth, their race or sexual orientation, no matter if they live in poverty or are trying to escape violence,” said NOW President-Elect Terry O’Neill. “My experience with domestic violence, as an abused wife left me humiliated and embarrassed. I only began to talk about this publically five years ago as I realized that to keep quiet was to continue the abuse. I want to empower women and telling my story does just that. Women are fed up with persistent inequality and are ready for change. I am honored and eager to lead NOW in making that change.”
O’Neill cut her political teeth working to defeat David Duke’s gubernatorial campaign in Louisiana. She went on to serve NOW at the local, state and national levels. As an attorney, she served a clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago before practicing law in New Orleans. She taught at the University of California Davis Law School and Tulane Law School. Currently, she is chief of staff to a Montgomery County (Md.) councilmember whose successes include a transgender equality law and Maryland’s first Family Justice Center for survivors of domestic violence. O’Neill’s national positions also include executive director of the National Council of Women’s Organizations.
CHICAGO DOES POP OUT HERE!!!!

We need to delve into O’Neill’s election and find out the real scoop on how it occurred, who was behind it, and what her real agenda is. The ‘labor union’ activity mentioned in your post could have been with the SEIU (in which Wade Rathke also has deep involvement; in fact, I believe he either founded it or co-opted it). Shelly Mandel, the L.A. NOW President, ran against O’Neill for National NOW President. She was the only prominent NOW leader to endorse Sarah Palin’s VP candidacy last year. This does not look good. I see BO and ACORN’s sleazy fingerprints all over O’Neill.

I don’t see any way that O’Neill could’ve worked with ACORN Louisiana in New Orleans and perhaps even with SEIU, and not have realized that Wade and Dale Rathke were up to no good. The offices in NO apparently were in very close quarters. I know many good, solid feminists who’ve worked their tushies off for years trying to get the ERA passed. So, okay, it’s good that O’Neill does, too. But, these days, face it, it sure isn’t as tough to come out in favor of ERA as it was 30 years ago. That video with Bertha, King and Dobbs was interesting…what caught my ear was in the end when Dobbs stated that ‘his’ investigation on whether Obie ever worked for ACORN, now Community Organizationa International, COI, was false, was a never.
I didn’t beleive him so I did a little searching. I found this link that apeear to be released sometime back in December which essentially provides some proof of Obie’s DEEP involvement with ACORN, now Community Organization Internatioanl, COI. (I make of point of creating this association as it may be necessary to prevent the potential loss in association as to who this knew name really is).
http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/7203
“Since then, we have invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office. Thus it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for STate Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress in 1996. By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends.”
Not only does Foulkes boast of Obama’s ACORN leadership training, but also makes it clear that Obama’s post-law school organizing of “Project VOTE” in 1992 was undertaken in direct partnership with ACORN. The tie between Project VOTE and ACORN is also something that Obama and others have attempted to disprove in recent weeks as ACORN has come under fire for allegations of voter registration fraud.”

Gentlemen:
I’m writing simply as an American citizen to express my grave concerns about the future of equality of rights in America in light of the patently unwarranted, illegal and unconstitutional firing of Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS/Americorps) Inspector General Gerald Walpin. I trust that you both share these concerns and I urge you to honor the profound trust the people of this nation have reposed in you – in your positions where partisan politics have no place – by joining Mr. Walpin and members of Congress in demanding a full Congressional hearing and investigation into Mr. Walpin’s firing.
Based on reliable news reports, the facts appear to be as follows:
I) President Obama and the White House did not provide Congress with the mandatory 30-day notice and explanation of cause before firing an Inspector General as required by the 2008 Inspectors General Reform Act, a law which Mr. Obama himself co-sponsored as a Senator. That law and the Inspectors General Act of 1978 were established to ensure the independence and objectivity of Inspectors General by requiring that the President appoint Inspectors General “without regard to political affiliation” and “solely on the basis of integrity and demonstrated ability.”
Contrary to those federal laws, Mr. Walpin was fired by way of a June 10 telephone call from Norman Eisen, White House Special Counsel to the President for Ethics and Government Reform. During that brief, unexpected call, Mr. Eisen gave Mr. Walpin an ultimatum to either resign or be fired, allowing Mr. Walpin just an hour to decide. When Mr. Eisen called back 45 minutes later, Mr. Walpin refused to resign. Mr. Walpin has been placed on administrative leave and forbidden to return to his office. The White House notified Congress on June 11 that Mr. Walpin would be removed, giving no cause for the firing besides Mr. Obama’s lacking “confidence” in Mr. Walpin. Also on June 11, the White House appointed an acting CNCS inspector general. Only after Sen. Claire McCaskill, sponsor of the 2008 Inspectors General Reform Act, pointed out that President Obama had failed to follow proper procedure, and asked for a written explanation of cause, did the White House even attempt to provide one.

Harper’s publisher calls Obama a “liar.”
John R. MacArthur: Obama a very smooth liar
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 17, 2009
JOHN R. MacARTHUR
IT ISN’T QUITE FAIR to call Barack Obama a liar. During the campaign he carefully avoided committing to much of anything important that he might have to take back later. For now, I won’t quibble with The St. Petersburg Times’s Obamameter, which so far has the president keeping 30 promises and breaking only six.
And yet, broadly speaking, Obama has been lying on a pretty impressive scale. You just have to get past his grandiloquent rhetoric — usually empty of substance — to get a handle on it. I offer a short, incomplete list, which I’m sure others could easily enlarge.

Terry O’Neil was not the Obama candiate – Terry pulled off a HUGE upset with the help of BettyJean, Paulie, Lynette and other Puma’s that were at the convention. They swung the election for O’Neil.

Thanks, Dances. Sorry for the “linkathon”! Just trying to be thorough.
Here’s part 2. Bear in mind that I’m not an attorney, but based on my layperson’s reading of the federal EEO regulations, statutes listed, I believe BO and the WH may be in violation. I think they clearly violated the IG Reform Act of 2008 and its predecessor, as well as the Constitution. PUMA legal brains? Thanks.

In a subsequent letter from Mr. Eisen to a few select House and Senate leaders, the White House still offered no reasonable explanation of cause for Mr. Walpin’s firing. The letter said only that at the May 20, 2009 CNCS board meeting, “Mr. Walpin was confused, disoriented, unable to answer questions and exhibited other behavior that led the board to question his capacity to serve.” Mr. Eisen’s letter did not substantiate these allegations. Mr. Eisen’s letter noted that after this single, isolated meeting the board “lost confidence” in Mr. Walpin’s “capacity to serve.” There are reports that the meeting was extended and that Mr. Walpin’s notes were rifled through while he was out of the room, after which the board refused his request for an opportunity to reorganize his notes.
II) As you’re aware, given your staunch opposition to any attempt to weaken federal age discrimination protections, words such as those used in Mr. Eisen’s letter to describe an older American such as Mr. Walpin are code for age-based discrimination. I have observed Mr. Walpin during several recent broadcast interviews and have seen no indication whatever of confusion, disorientation or lack of capacity. Quite the contrary, Mr. Walpin exhibits exceptionally clear, cogent, intelligent deliberation, commentary and dialog. Based on all available public evidence, the unsubstantiated allegations in Mr. Eisen’s letter appear to be patently false. As you will note upon reading the articles linked below, Mr. Walpin’s firing likely was motivated by purely political reasons, with a heinous attempt to justify it after the fact by means of completely inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, borderline gerontophobic rhetoric.
III) In an effort to get to the bottom of Mr. Obama’s abrupt, unexplained firing of Mr. Walpin, a team of investigators from the staff of Sen. Charles Grassley, a co-sponsor of the 2008 Inspectors General Reform Act, met with Mr. Eisen on Wed., June 17. Mr. Eisen provided virtually no information and refused to answer most fact-based questions posed to him. Sen. Grassley, therefore, submitted twelve written questions to White House Counsel Gregory Craig, asking for written responses by June 24. Rep. Darrel Issa, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, also sent a letter to White House Counsel Craig about Walpin’s firing, requesting numerous documents and asking for written answers to his questions by June 26.
IV) Mr. Walpin has served with distinction as Inspector General for the CNCS since January of 2007. You may visit this link to see a firsthand example of the outstanding quality of public service work that Mr. Walpin has performed. http://www.cncsig.gov/PDF/StHope/StHOPEFIN.pdf. Mr. Walpin has an extensive, distinguished legal career, including serving with Robert F. Kennedy early in his career. http://www.innsofcourt.org/Content/Default.aspx?Id=343

Oops. Here’s part 3 of the letter, the one with the list of probable/possible violations. Thanks.
——
V) With Mr. Walpin’s firing, in addition to violating the 1978 Inspectors General Act and the 2008 Inspectors General Reform Act, the Obama administration appears to be in violation of the following, among which you will recognize federal regulations and/or statutes that the CRC and EEOC are responsible to enforce:
q the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
q title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Section 2000e-3 section 704
q the Civil Rights Act of 1991 as amended
q the Age Discrimination Act of 1975
q Section 188 of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) Title I
q the U.S. Constitution, from which such federal laws, regulations and statutes emanate.
VI) The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009, includes a whopping $201 million in funding for the CNCS to support an expansion of AmeriCorps. Mr. Walpin clearly was diligently doing his job as CNCS Inspector General in striving to ensure accountability and transparency to the American people regarding whether such funds – representing their hard-earned taxpayer dollars, especially in these dismal economic times – are being appropriately spent.
VII) Mr. Walpin is rightly fighting back against his unwarranted firing, and calling for a Congressional hearing and investigation.
We have made great strides in combating racism, sexism, religious intolerance, and other forms of discrimination in the United States. We must not allow age-based discrimination to stand unchallenged, particularly when perpetrated by individuals at the highest levels of government. We must remain as vigilant and vigorous in recognizing and combating ageism as we have remained in recognizing and combating other forms of bigotry.
If the despicable act of Mr. Walpin’s unwarranted, illegal, unconstitutional firing is allowed to stand, it would send a chilling message to other Inspectors General, all of whom must remain unfettered by any threat of retaliation in order to properly do their jobs as “watchdogs” who work diligently to ensure appropriate use of hard-earned taxpayer dollars. It would also send a message of despair to all Americans – particularly older Americans like me – that their rights are expendable in the face of political cronyism, corruption and thuggery.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Juliette 06.22.09 at 6:43 pm

ACORN, now renamed as Community Orginizers International has in fact gone international! Wade Rathke is currently in Sicily-Italy. Orginizers have set up camp in India and around the world.

cjk-Nice job on your letter. You asked for puma input and I was going to give some until I saw that you were getting ready to do another posting. Here’s my input.
I think your first paragraph and your last two paragraphs would be a good letter. Include a sentence directing the recipients to an attachment upon which you are basing your conclusions. Then, the attachment has the information that is currently the bulk of your letter.
My reasoning for re-arranging your letter this way is to get the letter portion to one page. The three paragraphs I have noted make your points. Your documentation is available as an attachment if they want to read it. If the letter itself is really long it might not be read. By having a succinct letter with an attachment you increase your chances of having the letter read and potentially assigned to someone to handle.

I don’t believe St.Hope ever actually repaid those funds as a result of the investigation being derailed by Johnson’s attorney and BO’s other cronies. Also, the excuse that Sacramento would be precluded from receiving federal funds because of Johnson is no reason, in my opinion, to allow Johnson’s obvious wrongdoing to go unpunished. Those so-called “administrative errors” were flatout misappropriation of funds, and Johnson, et al, knew it. Those are yours and my tax dollars he was using to have kids under the program wash his car, pick up his dry cleaning and campaign for him and his cronies.

Here is the current definition of “waters of the United States under the Clean Water Act:
“Definition of “Waters of the United States”
40 CFR 230.3(s) The term waters of the United States means:
All waters which are currently used, or were used in the past, or may be susceptible to use in interstate or foreign commerce, including all waters which are subject to the ebb and flow of the tide;
All interstate waters including interstate wetlands;
All other waters such as intrastate lakes, rivers, streams (including intermittent streams), mudflats, sandflats, wetlands, sloughs, prairie potholes, wet meadows, playa lakes, or natural ponds, the use, degradation or destruction of which could affect interstate or foreign commerce including any such waters:
(i) Which are or could be used by interstate or foreign travelers for recreational or other purposes; or
(ii) From which fish or shellfish are or could be taken and sold in interstate or foreign commerce; or
(iii) Which are used or could be used for industrial purposes by industries in interstate commerce;
All impoundments of waters otherwise defined as waters of the United States under this definition;
Tributaries of waters identified inparagraphs (s)(1) through (4) of this section;
The territorial sea;
Wetlands adjacent to waters (other than waters that are themselves wetlands) identified in paragraphs (s)(1) through (6) of this section; waste treatment systems, including treatment ponds or lagoons designed to meet the requirements of CWA (other than cooling ponds as defined in 40 CFR 423.11(m) which also meet the criteria of this definition) are not waters of the United States.
Waters of the United States do not include prior converted cropland. Notwithstanding the determination of an area’s status as prior converted cropland by any other federal agency, for the purposes of the Clean Water Act, the final authority regarding Clean Water Act jurisdiction remains with EPA.”
The definition proposed for the Restoration Act simplifies this and does away with some of the double-talk about what waters in question “could” be used for, but given that the definition includes all impoundments of, or tributaries to, Waters of the United States, it does not change the scope of the definition. Just about the only things that are currently not arguably Waters of the United States under this old definition are rural cesspools and cattle tanks. (But the latter could become Waters of the United States if an international or out-of-state tourist is allowed to engage in birdwatching there, or if they’re impoundments of tributary streams to a Water of the United States.)
Texas State law uses a very similar definition for Waters of the State, except that it does include wetlands adjacent to Waters of the State.
This new definition is not a “heist,” and it does not steal anyone’s water or give grounds to allow the government to tax water usage or sell water to home consumers. Water *rights* are currently sold both to local governments (which are usually in charge of municipal water supplies), corporations and individuals such as farmers and ranchers, but that’s nothing new and has nothing to do with this current act.
Do not start a prowl on this unless you want to make PUMA look silly.

http://www.the-savvy-sista.com/search?q=terry
O’Neill, in turn, says she has the edge over Lyles in regard to grass-roots organizing and membership recruitment.
“I keep hearing ‘Terry, I want to see more activism in my community,’” O’Neill said. “The press releases, the media exposure, invitations to the White House — these are excellent things, but they’re not enough. The grass roots are not personally engaged.”
Like many feminists, O’Neill said she is still celebrating Barack Obama’s election as president — and his appointments of numerous veterans of the women’s movement to key posts in his administration.

The CNCS Office of Inspector General was created by the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993 to conduct and supervise independent and objective audits and investigations of CNCS programs and operations. Based on the results of these audits, reviews, and investigations, the OIG recommends policies to promote economy and efficiency and prevent and detect fraud and abuse in the Corporation’s programs and operations. http://www.cncsig.gov/

“1) Did the CNCS Board communicate its concerns about Mr. Walpin to the White House in writing?
2) Specifically, which CNCS Board members came forward with concerns about Mr. Walpin’s ability to serve as the Inspector General?
3) Was the communication about the Board’s concerns on or about May 20, 2009 the first instance of any communications with White House personnel regarding the possibility of removing Mr. Walpin?
4) Which witnesses were interviewed in the course of Mr. Eisen’s review?
5) How many witnesses were interviewed?
6) Were any employees of the Office of Inspector General, who may have had more frequent contact with Mr. Walpin than the Board members, interviewed?
7) Was Mr. Walpin asked directly during Mr. Eisen’s review about the events of May 20, 2009?
8) Was Mr. Walpin asked for his response to the allegations submitted to the Integrity Committee by Acting U.S. Attorney Lawrence Brown?
9) What efforts were made during Mr. Eisen’s review to obtain both sides of the story or to afford the Office of Inspector General an opportunity to be heard?
10) In addition to the claim that Mr. Walpin was “confused” and “disoriented,” the letter also says he exhibited “other behavior” that led to questions about his capacity. What other behavior was Mr. Eisen referencing?
11) If the initial and primary concern had to do with Mr. Walpin’s capacity to serve for potential health reasons, why was he only given one hour to decide whether to resign or be fired?
12) If Mr. Walpin’s telecommuting arrangements since the beginning of this year were a major concern, then why was Mr. Walpin not simply asked to stop telecommuting.”

cjv,
I read Inhofe’s remarks. Inhofe is a certifiable right-wing whackdoodle who is trying to whip up fear that “ohmigod, the dam’ guv’mint’s gonna tell us what we can do with our private property.” It’s not too different from the rightwing meme that passing the ERA will mean women will have some guy pissing into a urinal right next to them in unisex restrooms.
Inhofe’s other contributions to discourse include his view that climate change is a “hoax” (because the oil-interest scientists say it is, of course, and Oklahoma is a significant oil-and-gas producing state); support of torture; support for a constitutional amendment banning equal marriage; and the wishful statement that there “has never been a homosexual. . .in the recorded history of his family.”
Toxic. Gloves, overalls and face shield required.

Dances you are right, Blog Talk Radio needs to post time zones!
At first the program was listed at 7 pm on the 22nd, eastern or pacific time?
Then a couple minutes later it was listed at 2 am on 23rd of june. I give up. Here was the description
[Tonight - Congratulating President Elect Terry O'Neill (who will try to join us), Marcia Papas, Lynette Long, Carolyn Cook and many other NOW Delegates just back from 2009 NOW elections will tell you all about the exciting election and the new direction of NOW and how you can expect NOW will be your grassroots organization from 2009 Forward.]

scarlet,
You’re right. It is silly.
“For the first time in the 36-year history of the act, activities that have no impact on actual rivers and lakes would be subject to full federal regulation.”
This is flatly untrue. Look at the definitions in the current Clean Water Act. “. . .activities that have no impact on actual rivers and lakes” are already subject to full federal regulation under the CWA.
Please show me where the Restoration Act mentions drainage ditches or rain puddles. Agan, this is pure right-wing fear-mongering hyperbole.

BigCatLover — I don’t know anything about the poster, but that’s the height of hypocrisy. That young girl died protesting for all women to be free. For CBS to trivialize her death by selecting an Obamacized poster has taken the network’s woman-hating/BO-loving attitude to an ugly extreme.

Why didn’t we women fight like the Iranians? And why didn’t these conservatives fight like the mud-slingers they typically are?

This poster is in incredably poor taste. How lovely that an obvious Obamobot would exploit the image of a young woman bleeding to death to give a favorable association to O’Logo.
It kind of reminds me of how Oprah exploited the emotional and behavioral problems of children as she paraded them on her show like side show attractions at a circus.

I’m listening to the June 10th interview with new NOW prez Terry O’Neill on blogtalk radio and she is saying that attacks on Sarah Palin or no more acceptable because of her political idealogy than attacks on HRC or Sotomayor. There’s hope there. She’s also upset that G. Gordon Liddy has said that he hopes Sotomayor does not have to make a ruling on the Supreme Court when she’s on her period. But she doesn’t seem to realize that Obama said very similar things about HRC during the campaign. Betty Jean is trying to pin her down on Obama’s lack of action on his promises. She is very pro ERA and is promising to work hard to get it passed. I’ll be interested to see what she has to say on tonight’s interview.

Great post by RD. Thanks for link. I do hope, though, that RD is aware of O’Neill’s connections with ACORN and the comments she’s made about being glad BO is President and about how he’s appointing ‘veterans of the women’s movement.’ Ahem.
From TrishfromCanada, #141:
“I keep hearing ‘Terry, I want to see more activism in my community,’” O’Neill said. “The press releases, the media exposure, invitations to the White House — these are excellent things, but they’re not enough. The grass roots are not personally engaged.”
Like many feminists, O’Neill said she is still celebrating Barack Obama’s election as president — and his appointments of numerous veterans of the women’s movement to key posts in his administration.”

I think your letter is great.
I have chosen not to mention the age issue because as we all know, this firing of Walpin had nothing to do with age and everything to do with his probe into Major Johnson’s alleged misuse of Federal funding. But your choice to focus on the ageism just might work.
Having said that I encourage everyone reading this to take part in this important prowl. All approaches are good and will remind our public servants just who they are supposed to serve.

Always appreciate your comments, Juliette. I know the Walpin firing had nothing to do with his age, in actuality. Of course it had everything to do with his investigation’s finding of wrongdoing by BO crony Mayor Kevin Johnson. But, the ostensible rationale for the firing was crafted around verbiage that is code for age-based discrimination. The allegations were unsubstantiated and easily refuted. If BO and the WH stand by the rationale, they’re violating EEO regulations and standards. They’ve painted themselves into a corner. Also, the FBI is now investigating Johnson, et al.

I was posting comments on blog talk and asked if O’Neil had any connection to ACORN.Marcia Pappas replied no.
I won’t take any bodies word for though. I hate being disillusioned and that is what NOW did to me when they supported Obama.

I’m going to be open to NOW’s new regime, but I also have a long memory. I have no expectations, and that ensures that I won’t be disappointed. If I’m happily surprised, all the better. Meanwhile, Murphy and Puma satisfy my need for feminist context and actions.

Some many violations-so little time, but I’m on it.

Thanks for working so hard on this CJK.

I’ll try to keep an open mind. I think that Pumas prowls have been affective and I am happy to spend my time here.
Lynette Long was amazing during the primarys and I’m glad she has had influence at NOW. But as for NOW, once bitten twice shy, you know what I mean.

Of ALL the uunmitigated gall…….. the nerve of this :::insert favorite string of terms here:::,
donna brazile sent this email:
In a decision announced this morning, the Supreme Court upheld the 1965 Voting Rights Act — a law that has done more to expand and strengthen our democracy than any other.
It’s good news — but the fight to protect voting rights doesn’t end there. Attacks on this critical law will not stop. And voter suppression tactics will continue to plague our elections.
and she, of all people, should know. What a piece of work she is.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters.
President Barack Obama’s administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
“There’s no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.
“We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran,” Kelly said. “We tried many years of isolation, and we’re pursuing a different path now.”

In a surprising development, House Democrats have reached an agreement to bring a sweeping climate change bill to the floor by the end of the week, Democratic aides announced late Monday night.

HPBoston — sounds like you got the same e-mail I did. I can never stop myself from replying – makes me feel better – someone is reading those – I just know it.
I also fielded a call for the Mrs. last night from Emily’s List – They started talking about Obama — I fucking let ‘em have it. I also told them I was so sick of “abortion” this and “abortion” that – it’s not going any where so stop trying to “scare” people. The lady on the other end of the phone was very nice – I told her – too bad you’re the one who got me on the other end of the phone.

A little humor -
SICK LEAVE
I urgently needed a few days off work, but I knew the Boss would not allow
me to take leave.
I thought that maybe if I acted “Crazy” then he would tell me to take a few days off.
So, I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises.
My co-worker asked me what I was doing.
I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb, so, that the Boss might think I was “Crazy” and give me a few days off.
A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, “What in
the name of good GOD are you doing?”
I told him I was a light bulb.
He said, “You are clearly stressed out.” Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.”
I jumped down and walked out of the office….
When my co-worker followed me, the Boss asked her, “…And where do you think you’re going?!”
She said, “I’m going home too. I can’t work in the dark..”

I want brazille to stay on the bus until the time it goes over the cliff and takes all the scum with it.
Besides, I like most of the people who are here under the bus with us. Why contaminate the mix with a fraudulent, crude, hater like donna?
