What Cinie said:
“For some reason, the internal power struggle between Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mir Hossein Mousavi is being represented by Americans via the blogosphere, even by some writers whose opinions I deeply respect, as a clasic battle for the hearts, minds, and souls of the Iranian people in their valiant struggle for freedom, fairness, truth, justice and the American way.
As if.
Let’s face it, when this is all over, no matter who wins, I doubt if we see a spike in the country’s travel and tourism revenues. Iran is not gonna change much, if at all, and, fromwhat I’ve read, if it does, it might be for the worse.
So, why all this talk about “democracy,” “moderates,” “freedom?” Do da phrase “hope and change” ring a bell? The way I see it, in the current situation, Mousavi is channeling Obiteme, big time. Imagine if the Democratic National Convention had featured a fair floor vote, and not the strong arm, money changing, promises in smoky backrooms tactics employed on behalf of the Obacrats. Now, imagine Hillary Clinton won. Twitter Revolution, maybe, huh? College campus driven internet messages would have flown faster than a speeding bullet through Left Blogostan calling on all red blooded, freedom luvin’ Americans to stand up for justice, truth and beauty on behalf of the beleaguered, yet noble black men and women upon whose backs this country was built, power to the people, takin’ it to the streets, yadda, yadda, yadda. Doo doodoo doooo! (sound of hounds to the races horn here) People all over the world could have signed up on their social networking sites, or perused the blogs and heard first hand the pain, rage, and frustration sure to have been expressed by the dedicated amateur and professional Obots typing and tweeting away. And, unlike the similar protests waged by us angry old Bible-clinging bitter knitters, you can bet your sweet bippy that the cries of the Berkley crowd would have been taken way seriously by the Microsoft/GE/Bankster Boyz in control of the Leg Tinglers of the MSM. “Spontaneous” on campus and street demonstrations escalating to violence would have been expected, and there’s every reason to believe such expectations would have been met in spades. Pardon the pun.”
I love, love, love that woman. Her 6-paragraph intro, a classic in Cinieology in which she hits EVERY Puma and liberal point with her trademark humor hammer, is well worth the read, natch.
In comments, hopepuma brought our attention to THIS article in the New York Times which reports that Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton are pressuring the president to take a firmer stand in supporting the pro-Moussavi protesters. I read the article and came away with these thoughts.
- All of the sources quoted are Anonymous, so I’m with Glenn Greenwald and will call b.s. on that. When and if these “administration officials” are willing to talk on the record I’ll take them at their word. Until then, not so much.
- Even if the quotes are 100% true, so what? It could be that Clinton is merely cautioning obama to be a better politician, to play his cards closer to his vest. For example, obama’s statement in Canada that there is “not much difference” between Ahmadinejad and Moussavi may be technically true, but saying it in front of cameras is stupid when you’re the president of the United States. John McCain is chuckling somewhere in chagrin, I just know it.
- Or it could be that Clinton and Biden believe instability in Iran is good for the United States no matter what. In this cynical view (and I’ve never doubted Clinton’s, or Biden’s for that matter, ability to be a cynic when it comes to improving America’s strategic position in the world) ANY instability will favor our side. Every day that obama can use words or actions to subtly undermine the positions of BOTH Ahmidinejad (by supporting the protestors) AND Moussavi (by admonishing violence, reminding the world that Moussavi is NOT Nelson Mandela) is GOOD for us because it means whichever one of the pro-theocracy Neanderthals ends up in the Top Spot will have a fair amount of legitimacy doubts weighing down his tenure.
- See Number 1.
Closer to home, it looks like Dick Morris or Karl Rove (can’t remember which one of those jerks I hate to agree with was saying this last week) was right when he looked at the polls then and predicted obama’s approval rating was headed for a fall. A new NYT poll shows that Americans are decidedly mixed on key parts of obama’s domestic agenda, though the president’s overall approval remains consistently above 50%.
“A distinct gulf exists between Mr. Obama’s overall standing and how some of his key initiatives are viewed, with fewer than half of Americans saying they approve of how he has handled health care and the effort to save General Motors and Chrysler. A majority of people said his policies have had either no effect yet on improving the economy or had made it worse, underscoring how his political strength still rests on faith in his leadership rather than concrete results.”
Heh. It’s a good thing his political strength isn’t dependent on “concrete results.” Are the writers as stupid as they seem or are they secretly laughing at the stupidity of the American voter?
Cupcakes anyone?

Breaking news: A Continaental Arlines pilot died while in the middle of a flight. A first officer is going to pilot the plane and try to land it safely. This is on Fox tv news.
murphy 06.18.09 at 11:36 am
oh shoot Big Cat. I saw that and thought the plane had already landed safely. damn! fingers crossed. that is horrible!
BigCatLover 06.18.09 at 11:37 am
They’re going totry to land in Neward, but the fog is so thick there you can hardly see the planes sitting on the ground.

Update – there happened to be another pilot on board the Continental airplane and he and the copilot will land the plane.
murphy 06.18.09 at 11:47 am
“In fact, he said, the emergency crews at the Newark have not been placed on any kind of heightened alert or put in a preparatory mode, he said.
“It is our understating, from the F.A.A., that the plane has plenty of experienced pilots on board and that is not an issue for us,” Mr. Coleman said. The New Jersey Department of Health has been notified to “stand by,” he said.”
probably all will be well.

BigCatLover 06.18.09 at 11:53 am
Fox is reporting that emergency crews are already in place but it is not expected to be an emergency landing. Continental Airlines is now reporting on their website that the pland has landed. It is so foggy that you cannot see it on tv.
BigCatLover 06.18.09 at 12:03 pm
The pilot happened to be 61 years old and last year the FAA bumped up the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65. I suppose a controversary will start about that. The really scary thing was that this was an international flight from Brussels and I believe I heard the news man say he actually died last night, but I can’t confirm that now.

It seems to me the peole of iran want freedom period. this is what happens with the youth have become upset at their entire
way of being so cut off from the world, the very twitter thing
proves they want change. Sad:( Young iranian women want more equal rights this is all great thing, but the tragedy is they are
having to do this all alone and could face horrendous things once all this is finally settled, and who knows, it could just be the beginning of the “cry to the world for help” i wish other countries would stand up, not just us.

#16 those m*therf*ckers!
One prominent Democratic lobbyist unhappy with the situation described it vividly: “It’s almost like the ugly girl that you want to call late at night — but don’t want to be seen with on a date.”
Obama refuses to appear at fundraising events where lobbyists are allowed to contribute money, so the Democrats can’t collect lobbyists’ cash at Thursday night’s dinner. But since the president won’t be at the morning-after event, congressional Democrats will be free to collect the lobbying dollars then that they couldn’t take the night before.

Great post Murphy,
I have been thinking about why obamas poll numbers remain high it light of any “concrete results” but then again obama was “elected” without having any concrete results of any of his chosen careers.
If you asked people during the campaign “what has he done?”
You would get that blank stare. I ask people now “what has he done that has you still shouting Yes he can? I get that blank stare.
I doubt we will ever see a major decline in his approval ratings because the people who elected him without any need for concrete results still have no need for any concrete votes. It was a non issue then and it will remain a non issue.
Dare I say Obama was elected because he was the first black president and as long as he remains black he will have their approval.

murphy 06.18.09 at 12:13 pm
from VTCat’s link.
“President Barack Obama’s strict ban on lobbyist contributions will limit the haul from Thursday night’s fundraising dinner for congressional Democrats, but organizers have found a way around it: a morning-after event at the same hotel where lobbyists — and their money — will be welcomed with open arms.
Invitations for the $5,000-per-person Issues Conference don’t say it’s an effort to skirt Obama’s lobbying ban, but they walk right up to the edge.”

Civil Rights Commission smells a rat in voting rights case dismissal
Rick Moran
It seems that the story about the Justice Department dismissal of the case involving the New Black Panther Party and violations of voting rights in Philadelphia just won’t go away.
excerpt:
I still don’ expect much to come of this. The press has universally ignored this incredible politicization of the Justice Department by AG Holder and the Obama administration. But if the Civil Rights Commission were to hold hearings on the matter, that just might raise awareness of the issue – as well as put the administration on the spot, forcing them to come up with something besides the lame excuses they’ve already given for abandoning a 100% sure conviction in a case that everyone agrees was an egregious violation of voting rights law.

All pumas can go to the American Thinker ‘about us’ page and read it’s background and the biograpies of it’s staff, and decide for themselves which way they lean on several issues. Then each one can decide if they consider it a good source of information or a slanted source. We should do that for every source we use and quote.

read some of the comments about the fraud’s ratings – obots crying give him a chance – he’s only been in office since january – yeah right & just look at what he accomplished – took over the banks, took over the car companies, put us so far into debt and 3 generations from now will be paying it off (if the country is still usa – might be chinese – might be muslim – won’t know – I will be dead & gone) and he’s still looking to spend more of the taxpayer money (which by the way with 6 1/2 million unemployed = no revenue to the feds or the states)while playing with all the perks that being president has – ya know flyin around in the helicopters, flying around in AF1 – surprised he didn’t put his fake logo on it – throwing parties every nite because they miss Chicago (got a solution for that – resign asshole & you can go play in chitown all you want)….
Wonder how long it’s gonna take for the koolaid coma to wear off & obots will realize “he’s not gonna pay their mortgage or buy their gas”?

WALPIN AND AMERICORPS
Editorial: AmeriCorps case needs resolution
Since AmeriCorps began in September 1994, about 2,600 nonprofit and community groups a year have worked with volunteers to improve communities. For their service, volunteers get a $4,725 education award for college or graduate school and a living allowance.
The AmeriCorps’ office of the inspector general began looking at Hood Corps in April 2008; in preliminary findings last September, it found that two St. HOPE employees received AmeriCorps living allowances and education awards – duplicating their salaries.
The inspector general also found that AmeriCorps volunteers were engaged in activities beyond the scope of the grant – such as recruiting students for Sac High and for a new charter opening in Harlem and doing clerical tasks at Sac High. The IG found that AmeriCorps volunteers were driving St. HOPE founder Kevin Johnson around, washing his car and picking up his dry cleaning. They also handed out fliers recommending a slate of Sac City school board candidates.

Just sent this e-mail response to Olive Garden, responding to the news that they’ve canceled their ads on Letterman for the rest of the year:
Dear Ms. Bruen,
I just read of Olive Garden’s decision to cancel all scheduled ads on David Letterman’s show for the remainder of the year in response to Mr. Letterman’s crude, rude, sexist/misogynistic jokes about Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughter, for which he still has not apologized to the innumerable women (as well as flight attendants) whom he offended, even though Gov. Palin has very charitably and graciously accepted his inadequate apology to her family.
I congratulate you and your company for standing up against such completely inappropriate, unwarranted, unconstitutional use of woman-hating remarks under the guise of so-called “humor,” a practice that has become frighteningly frequent among the U.S. news and entertainment media, particularly during last year’s primary and general election campaigns and this year. Americans do not tolerate racial or religious bigotry among the media. Why should Americans continue to tolerate gender-based bigotry? Only when Americans and American companies continue to stand up and speak out against woman-hating, discriminatory remarks and representations among the U.S. news and entertainment media — whose representatives and celebrities are viewed as role models throughout the world — will all women everywhere have even a glimmer of hope of achieving any meaningful equality of rights.
I applaud Olive Garden for having the conviction and courage to stand up and take action against remarks and representations of women that are patently and deeply offensive and detrimental to girls, women and families. Your family friendly restaurants will remain among those that I and my friends and family continue to enjoy.Sincerely,

From American Thinker:
About Us
American Thinker is a daily internet publication devoted to the thoughtful exploration of issues of importance to Americans. Contributors are accomplished in fields beyond journalism, and animated to write for the general public out of concern for the complex and morally significant questions on the national agenda.
There is no limit to the topics appearing on American Thinker. National security in all its dimensions, strategic, economic, diplomatic, and military is emphasized. The right to exist and the survival of the State of Israel are of great importance to us. Business, science, technology, medicine, management, and economics in their practical and ethical dimensions are also emphasized, as is the state of American culture.
_________________________________________________________________
Is there something offensive here?
American Thinker is a conservative site but I wouldn’t exaclty call them wingnuts.
Sometimes their articles are too far right for me. I don’t read those.
Sometimes the articles on CNN (or Politico or Salon or Slate, etc..) are too left for me. So-I don’t read those.
Personally, I try to stay away from the extremes of either side, left or right. Conspiracy theories, so called Pro-Life, religion driven, open the borders,etc-I don’t click. Huffpost I can live easily without.
There will always be articles on blogs and news sites that I don’t agree with but I pick and choose and always consider the source.
Right now Foxnews is the only TV news criticizing Obama.
I watch Greta but when O’Reilly comes on, off goes the tube.
CNN is an Obama slobberfest but I watch Lou Dobbs when I can.

Ziegler didn’t do it, Pumapac did. pffftt:
Following a week of back and forth between CBS late night comic David Letterman and Sarah Palin over a crude joke he told about the Alaska Republican governor’s daughter, the Olive Garden restaurant says it is cancelling all of its scheduled ads on Letterman’s “Late Show” for the rest of the year.
In an email to a Letterman critic obtained by POLITICO, a spokeswoman for the Italian restaurant chain wrote that “there will be no more Olive Garden ads scheduled for ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman in this year’s broadcast schedule,” citing the talk show host’s “inappropriate comments.”
“We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden,” wrote Sherri Bruen, the company’s guest relations manager.
Bruen said the company “screens network television programs whenever possible,” but explained that “telecasts, such as ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman, are taped on a daily basis, preventing advertisers from reviewing the content prior to airing.”
A spokesman for the company confirmed Thursday that for now it has cancelled all its remaining scheduled ads on the CBS program for the rest of the year.
Conservative radio host John Ziegler, who previously interviewed Palin for his film “Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted,” organized a lightly attended protest Tuesday outside the “Late Show” studio.
Ziegler has listed contact information
for 14 advertisers on Letterman’s show, including Olive Garden, on his website dedicated to the comedian’s firing. He called the news an “obvious victory” but vowed to continue “our quest for some sense of accountability for Letterman in this matter.”

In response to your email regarding MARS SNACKFOOD US.
We are writing in response to your recent communication which objects to the placement of advertising on David Letterman. We appreciate your concern and thank you for taking the time to contact us.
While we do not “sponsor” television shows, we do contract for commercial time months in advance for those programs which we feel effectively reach our consumers. No one on the Right or Left will acknowledge Puma Power. They will never admit that we influence anything, but so what, that’s supposed to stop us?
Joe Scarborough on “Morning Joe” at least questions His Hopiness but even his show is four Obama sycophants and one glib moderate Republican.
Republicans in general undermine their own credibility with ridiculous rants about “communism” when clear this administration is completing the work a “W” style fascism. The marriage of government and corporations. I am not sure how the privatization of military and intelligence functions fits in there, but W2 is a corporatist not a socialist. They sound ridiculous when they harp on red herrings. And it hurts them when they try to make the case about Walpin.
On the upside, one big factor in the Letterman/Palin controversy was right and wrong. Letterman was so clearly and deeply in the wrong that even the most obtuse idiots in the media had to eventaully walk away from him. Maybe turth will out in the IG firings.

Okay, we’re trying to combat bigotry in all forms, correct? Well, isn’t BO’s calling IG Walpin “confused” and “disoriented,” and questioning his “capacity to serve” all the same kind of ageist (elder-hating) code that BO used against McCain during the general election campaign??? Are we not also trying to combat ageist bigotry? Where is the outrage when older Americans are subjected to this kind of bigotry and discrimination based on nothing more than their age? We need to protest the unwarranted Walpin firing on that basis. At its core, it’s nothing more than elder-hating bigotry.

South African rape survey shock
South Africa’s government has been urged to solve the rape epidemic
One in four South African men questioned in a survey said they had raped someone and nearly half admitted having attacked more than one victim.
The study, by the country’s Medical Research Council, also found three out of four who admitted rape attacked for the first time while in their teens.
It said practices such as gang rape were common because they were considered a form of male bonding.

CJK 06.18.09 at 4:45 pm
persephone, I agree that Walpin is ‘on the ball.’ What I’m objecting to are the so-called reasons BO gave for firing him. The remarks BO made are the same kind of elder-hating, essentially xenophobic remarks he made about McCain during the campaign. They are ageist and discriminatory. It is just as unconstitutional to fire someone based on their age, as it is to fire them based on race, creed, gender, etc. It is also unconstitutional to fire someone for purely selfish political reasons, which BO also is doing and using the blatantly ageist rationale as the excuse.

persephone, we’re definitely on the same page. I’d like to see us take this a step further than simply calling BO a f-ing liar and cringing at his ageist, elder-hating, xenophobic remarks. He and the bots cry “racist” at every turn, with or without cause. Yet, he and the bots continue to get away with their own bigoted remarks. We need to keep calling them on it whenever it happens. I’d like to see PUMA take the same kind of action against BO’s ageist remarks against Walpin as we took against Letterman’s sexisy/misogynistic remarks against Gov. Palin and her daughter. The DNC has historically supported National Stonewall through sponsorship of the annual Capitol Champions event. This year, we did not receive any support. The DNC has traditionally provided materials for the many Pride parades and festivals around the country to help educate the LGBT community about why the Democratic Party is the Party for full LGBT equality. This year we were informed that we would not be receiving any materials or support for producing materials for the various nationwide Pride activities. These decisions were very disappointing.
We’d be remiss to also not mention that the recent legal brief of the Obama Administration defending DOMA is incredibly hurtful. The members of the Board and our membership put our hopes, our dollars and our time into ensuring the election of Barack Obama because we believed that he supported us. To now have his Administration refer to our relationships in the same terms used by our long time enemies such as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and James Dobson hurts on so many levels. To have our committed and loving relationships referred to as the moral equivalent of incest and pedophilia is not something that any of us ever expected from this Administration considering how hard we worked to be seen and respected. For that reason alone, advocating for attendance at a fundraiser to support the Administration and the DNC, while they have not condemned this hurtful language, is not something our membership will receive positively.
The group says it’s not “boycotting” the June 25 fundraiser with Joe Biden; it just won’t encourage its members to attend.
Gay money is, historically, of outsized importance to the Democratic Party. Howard Dean, in particular, launched his presidential campaign in part on enthusiasm from gay donors about his support for civil unions, and maintained those relationships as chairman.
UPDATE: A source forwards over Petrillo’s conciliatory response to Stonewall’s Shane Larson:
While the DNC was unable to help with Pride materials this year, I did, in a recent conversation with Kyle Bailey, express that the DNC would be able to sponsor a project with Stonewall this year. He mentioned a Young Democrat guide that Stonewall is working on and I asked for him to send a proposal for possible assistance with funding. I am sorry if that was not communicated.
The full emails, sent earlier this afternoon, is after the jump.”

Quote:
Sacramento, CA: (May-20-08) A girl, who wished to stay unnamed, brought a sexual molestation lawsuit against Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson, alleging that Johnson, who was 29 and playing for the Phoenix Suns, molested her when she was 16. Court papers reveal that Johnson denied the girl’s allegations in the suit, though he agreed to pay $230,000 to resolve litigation. Johnson stated that he will pay some money upfront and the rest in six-month installments. Sources for the girl said that some of the money was to be used for medical, therapy and legal costs.

I wish they’d gone whole hog and announced a boycott. Obamination and his DOJ went whole hog… their associating incest and pedophilia with homosexuality is beyond dispicable. It also serves to reinforce the stereotype of gays as pedophiliacs, when heterosexual males represent a high 90s% of the pedophile population.

here’s some more of the same -
Some executives at banks propped up by government aid have retained a coveted perk: personal use of the company jet.
Flight records show numerous occasions when banks receiving federal money have flown their planes to destinations near resorts or executives’ vacation homes, including spots in Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, south Florida and Aspen, Colo. In some cases, it’s clear that bank executives were traveling for personal reasons; for other flights, many of which were over weekends or holidays, the passengers and purpose couldn’t be established.

Regarding the fly. I just cannot believe how much of the national and international press’ time today has been devoted to that fly. While listening to the BBC in the car just now I heard an interview with a Professor of ethics from Cambridge University about the ethics of killing a fly! Then on the BBC website there is a whole article on killing flies and descriptions of the ten best ways to accomplish this. At first, with all the very serious problems here and abroad right now I was mad that everyone is wasting time getting exercised over the fly but then knowing the oftentimes tongue-in-cheek British sense of humour (yep gave myself away), I thought that perhaps a little levity would be a help. What bugs me (sorry) is that while some of the discussion is just light comment, particularly from the posts, the center of attention and adoration is for our President who can do what my cat can do when he’s half asleep!

Hey, murphy. What do you think about a prowl re the Walpin firing? My rationale is that we need to combat ageism with the same vigor that we combat sexism, as we did re the Letterman remarks about Gov. Palin and her daughter. We know BO’s really firing Walpin because 1) MO wants control of Americorps and its parent corporation and 2) because Walpin’s investigation dug up dirt on BO supporter Kevin Johnson and 3) because Walpin’s investigation in the past dug up dirt on MO in Chicago. Also, we know that two other federal IGs have been mysteriously fired in recent weeks. But, the rationale BO’s using for firing Walpin is that Walpin’s “confused,” “disoriented,” and may lack “capacity to continue to serve,” i.e., senile. This is the same kind of ageist, elder-hating, xenophobic code that BO used in the primary against Hillary and in the general against McCain. It’s just as unconstitutional to discriminate against or fire someone because of their age, as to discriminate against or fire them because of their gender, race, etc. Bigotry is bigotry, and IMO, it’s time to start calling BO and the bots on it every time they do it. Perhaps we might e-mail WH Counsel Gregory Craig with BCCs to Sen. Charles Grassley, R, Iowa; Rep. Darrel Issa, R, Calif.; Sen. Claire McCaskill, D, Missouri; and organizations such as AARP. Thoughts? Thanks.

Okay, well I guess I’m just spinning my wheels. Perhaps BO’s remarks about the Walpin firing don’t offend others as much as me. We all age, regardless of gender, race, sexual preference, etc., etc. So, while BO and supporters’ ageist, elder-hating, xenophobic remarks and representations may not bother you now, there will come a day when they do. Yes, I know BO has been a huge traitor to the LGBT community. I am as incensed by the recent disgusting brief filed re DOMA and the baseless failure to overturn DADT as everyone on this blog. I tried in vain to convince those in my immediate circle that voting for BO was a huge mistake, that he cared nothing about equality of rights for women or for the LGBT community, that he cared only about himself and his rise to world emperor status. Having bought BO and supporters’ woman-hating rhetoric hook, line and sinker, they usually came back with remarks about Gov. Palin being a “stupid bimbo” and “dangerous to have a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.” They also came back with remarks about McCain being “out of touch” and “losing his bearings.” As murphy has said on so many posts, BO has betrayed every principle of social justice that the Dems used to stand for (that would be the Dem Party that I belonged to for some 40 years since registering to vote), and every principle of individual liberty on which this nation was founded. So, I just thought we’d want to take this opportunity to call attention to BO’s blatant bigotry in his remarks about the Walpin firing (as well as to the blatant Chicago politics-style cronyism, corruption and thuggery that the firing represents). Or, maybe not. Thanks.

Rep Grayson, Alan [FL-8] – 6/10/2009

I did a breakdown of the co-sponsors so far:
-96 Democrat (31 are women)
-14 Republican (2 are women)
-77 men
-33 women
Alice Paul and others broke from the mainstream women’s-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women’s voting rights in 1920. In light of what Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin have had to endure, do we not see history repeating itself!?
I can’t let this go. My own Republican rep. has NOT signed on to co-sponsor, even tho’ he DID in the last session of Congress. (I met with his senior field rep. yesterday, and it seemed like I had his ear. We discussed Sarah Palin at length and how PUMA, a predominantly Dem. organization overwhelmingly reached out in support of her! THIS FEELS VERY BIPARTISAN TO ME. My fervor for this might be a bit annoying for some, so my apologies in advance. Some others have asked, so I felt you all were due for an update.

Great work, rancho! I worked on behalf of the ERA and ERA Extension back in the late 70s/early 80s. I gave an “Alice Paul Birthday Celebration” at a local venue with reps from various women’s organizations, which included Barbara Feldon (played Agent 99 in TV’s “Get Smart.”) I researched Alice Paul and prepared a writeup for the event’s program and press release. She was an amazing feminist and wonderful role model. I loved one quote of hers in relation to the work for equality of rights for women, “Once you put your hand to the plow, you don’t quit till you reach the end of the row.” I feel that way, not only about equality of rights for women, but equality of rights for all.

I found the brekdown disgusting . . 14 Republicans, 96 Democrats.
And this isn’t bipartisan! It’s about recognizing a stong, intelligent, passionate political WOMAN, not giving “high fives” to a party!
CJK 06.18.09 at 10:59 pm
Thanks, rancho. As I used to say to audiences during media interviews or debating the Phyllis Schlafly minions, “As Alice Paul said when she drafted the ERA, ‘it’s a matter of simple justice.’” That’s exactly how I always felt about the ERA, and I could never understand how/why anyone could possibly object to it. Alice Paul’s quote about not quitting till you reach the end of the row was usually in response to those who would ask her why she kept pushing even though women had already won the right to vote. She knew that until women achieved full equality under the law under the highest law of the land (the Constitution) that any other discrete rights could ultimately become meaningless. She realized that there were so many state laws on the books that were discriminatory and detrimental to women, and that those would only be corrected if there was a federal amendment to bring them into compliance. No, my rep didn’t co-sponsor the event. It was a joint effort among groups such as League of Women Voters, National Women’s Political Caucus, NOW and others. I spearheaded it. It was quite successful. But, as we know, even though women have made some strides since then, we’re still struggling for full equality. Alice Paul’s more radical wing of the women’s movement became the National Woman’s Party. I would love to see PUMA evolve into today’s National Woman’s Party, with a viable Presidential candidate to support.

Art Review | ‘Michelangelo’s First Painting’
A Saint, Demons and a Leap of Imagination
By HOLLAND COTTER
Every supernova starts as a modest spark. Even Michelangelo began his career with less than Sistine-worthy work. What, exactly, was he doing? According to the 16th-century art-stargazer Giorgio Vasari, the master’s virgin effort was a smallish, slightly customized painted copy of a German print.
The print, an engraving by Martin Schongauer called “St. Anthony Tormented by Demons,” was in wide circulation when Michelangelo began his art apprenticeship in Florence in 1488. It was at this time, according to Vasari, that he produced the painting. He would have been 12 or 13. It was only later that he turned his attention to sculpture.

P.S. rancho — I presume you are aware (don’t know whether this was shown in “Iron Jawed Angels,” but it must have been) that Alice Paul and other feminists chained themselves to the WH fence to protest Pres. Wilson’s lack of action and hypocrisy re the ERA. They went on hunger strikes and were dragged off to jail and force-fed with rubber tubes jammed down their throats. Alice’s typical reply much later to questions about these events was simply, “We were arrested, of course.”
