You know the deal. David Letterman wins the Daily Pig, easily and with hands down. The guy deserves a SPECIAL commendation for blowing the competition out of the water.

Here’s John Ziegler putting the conventional feminist movement to shame:

Contessa, Contessa, Contessa. Sexism doesn’t KILL you, you lying hypocrite. At least not very often. What it does is limit your opportunities and jeopardize your ambitions. If I had been in Ziegler’s chair I think I would have responded to her ridiculous statement that she had been called slutty and survived it okay with, “Well, Contessa, perhaps being seen as a slut is a benefit in your industry.” I wonder if she would have gotten the point. Probably not.

Dear CBS,

David Letterman should be publicly censured for his offensive and sexist attempts to ridicule Sarah Palin and her daughters on June 9th. Last night’s non-apology is FAR from sufficient to address the damage he has done. Calling public figures “slutty” and implying that a young girl being raped and/or becoming pregnant as a result of unwanted sex with a much older man for LAUGHS is absolutely out of bounds, and is not funny in any context.

AMERICAN WOMEN DEMAND A SINCERE APOLOGY FROM DAVID LETTERMAN TO THE PALIN FAMILY AND TO ALL HIS VIEWERS!

I am also contacting the advertisers who sponsor the Letterman show, especially M&M Mars, Embassy Suites, and Best Western, which market themselves as family friendly brands, to urge them to pull their advertising from a show that uses violently sexist material for laughs.

Sincerely,

Don’t know if this qualifies as a prowl
but I have used my parental controls through my cable company to block all CBS
got a few others to do it
takes no time and they may disregard letters but if enough people ban cbs the cable companies will definately take notice.

I did the prowl, filed the FCC complaint and just got off the phone with M&M – woman I talked to tried to weasel out – told her made no difference – that Mars had better issue a public statement regarding the pig’s statements (called him letterman to her) because if not I will never buy another M&M product again & I love the peanut M&Ms. Tried to give me runaround about ads bought in advance, no idea when they will be on – told her I didn’t care – step up & make a statement or suffer the consequences……………..off to try & get thru to the others listed – also Hillbuzz had a shitload of advertisers – what a pig – is this ‘hate speech’? Ask me if I care………..

Prowl done, modified a bit to challenge CBS to take a stand, and not expect Letterman to make it go away!

What about prowling “The Contessa”, or making her an honorary
PIGETTE! Her interview was disgusting! She should be ashamed!
And John Ziegler . . bravo to him, for going on MSNBC and trying very politely to defend a woman against the wrath of another women. Loved his comment re. the white men representing the voice of the GOP.

Murphy, I think we need a “SPECIAL” award? for women who don’t get it . . .
women who screw other women, for their own personal gain or interests.
What do YOU ALL think. The list could get long, but other women can be their worst enemies. IF WOMEN HAD VOTED IN MASS FOR HILLARY LIKE BLACKS DID FOR OBAMA, WE WOULDN’T EVEN HAVE THIS TALK ON THIS BLOG TODAY!

I love the idea for the campaign FUCK YOU I am Now Going to vote with my remote. It is perfect when you think about it cause it comes down to companies making money.

Thank you Murphy!

As much as I appreciate being able to discuss and even debate all of the so called taboo issues like, religion and politics; the best days spent at PUMAPAC are the days when we collectively take serious action to defeat this kind of violent misogyny that has infected the so called liberal elite of America.

I will be making my second formal complaint to the FCC concerning the Letterman show. I cannot even remember what he said last time, that cuased me to write to the FCC for action; just to much misogyny out there to keep up with.

Kathy Griffen, you suck as well for giving in to the peer presure like an insecure tween and calling either, Gov. Palin or her daughter a slut; ‘can’t remember which.

Contessa Brewer, you suck along with everyone at MSNBC-Misogynist Sexist Nothing But Commies.

Juliette in #25:

Hmm, peer pressure? What does the phrase mean when applied to narcissist nattering nitwits of negativity who have more money than imagination and no moral compass whatsoever? Kathy Griffin should be able to afford to retire, or at least to say No to her so-called peers if they’re truly responsible for trying to drag her down to their low level.

Young students in school suffer from peer pressure. Nearly everyone in uniform, or so it seems to me, is under peer pressure, from military cadets and servicemembers to police, firefighters, and yes, waitresses, cafeteria workers, retail chainstore “Associates” and lots of other people who haven’t job security or financial stability in general to be able to avoid situations they don’t really like.

But these entertainers– they’re not struggling artists, they’re not waiting on tables or driving a delivery truck to make ends meet. No, they are at the top of their damn game.

That’s the real problem with them. They think it’s a game. They will tear apart a child as well as an adult, often someone they’ve never even met or been hurt by. One day it’s Jamie Foxx squirting out venom at a teenaged girl who has no connection to him. The next time, Letterman is making another crack devoid of humour but chock full of needless hate.

Their tone is what we’d expect from a comment, possibly a joke, at the expense of a terrorist, mass murderer or pervert– maybe that tall guy Osama, or Mister Schickelgruber who had a funny moustache (bin Laden and Hitler). Why are these young girls being subjected to attacks better suited for those criminals? What crime did the girls commit?

Oh yeah. They were caught breathing while female.

The president of a national women’s public policy group on Thursday blasted David Letterman’s “offensive” jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter and called on the CBS late-night host to formally apologize.

“There’s a saying that out of the heart, the mouth speaks, and Letterman’s statement reveals a pretty ugly reflection of who Letterman may be,” Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, told FOXNews.com.

more:

This was a good opportunity for CWA to get some visibility and Fox News helped.

They’ll slap down Letterman but they also spit on, push, and harass women at clinics. I’ve experienced this firsthand. Really nice people.

I don’t know what other groups are doing-maybe TNA is up to something?

34

CJK 06.11.09 at 6:12 pm

persephone, #30, though I don’t know anything about Concerned Women for America (CWFA), at least they were the only group to get it together first and speak out publicly against Letterman’s disgusting remarks (on Fox, the only news outlet that’s taken note of it;I would presume because of Greta). If CWFA’s policy regarding a woman’s right to privacy in her reproductive choices is really as you say, then I would certainly disagree with that policy. But, on the issue of Letterman’s/the media’s sexism/misogyny, I’d have to say they’re right on. Look at the number of votes they were able to mobilize on the Fox Forum poll. Those are the kind of numbers PUMAPAC ought to be racking up. PUMAPAC would be a great group to get its spokespersons out front on these kinds of issues and educate the public. Perhaps we have a bit to learn from groups such as CWFA, whether or not we agree with all their policies.

partly-off-topic tho’ I can’t wait for an open thread because… tomorrow the 12th is the opening day of the 20th Human Rights Film Festival in NYC. Amazing but true, female humans aka “Women” (weird! I know) are going to be represented among the directors, screenwriters, participants and reviewers etc. of the films featured in the 2-week-long event. I’ve collected some highlights with PUMAs in mind:

THOUGHTS IN A HIJAB
directed by Cliona Byrne, Eimanne El Zein, and Sahar Shakeri of Reel Grrls
7m; in English, & in Persian with English subtitles

(from the “Youth Producing Change” part of the festival on the 19th and 20th)
“A young woman who recently emigrated from Iran, and her choice to continue wearing the hijab that once symbolized oppression for her family.”
-

following from links via the summary page
“The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival”
http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/hrw09/program.html

double feature!

SANCTUARY
by Lovejit K Dhaliwal
4m; in English

“Sanctuary is the animated true story of one woman, Marjorie, who tries to seek asylum in the U.K. Speaking of her experiences in her own words, the film illustrates her inner journey as she confronts the effects of her torture and her outward journey as she struggles for asylum.

-and-

MRS. GOUNDO’S DAUGHTER
directed by Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater
68m; in English, and in Bambara & French with English subtitles

“A Malian mother fights for asylum in the U.S. to protect her two-year-old daughter from female genital cutting. She must persuade an immigration judge what she already knows: her U.S.-born daughter Djenabou will suffer this procedure if Goundo is deported.”
-

TAPOLOGO
by Gabriela Gutierrez Dewar & Sally Gutierrez Dewar
88m; English, and Tswana with English subtitles

“Freedom Park squatter camp, in South Africa’s North West Province, accommodates a migrant workforce that mines the world’s largest single source of platinum. Among the women in this community is a group of former sex workers living with HIV that has created a network called Tapologo as home-based care workers, joining in solidarity to care for others in the community living with HIV.”

Now I’m thinking about the options, obstacles and oppression in these women’s lives. They don’t have any of the choices enjoyed by the nasty-assed “entertainers” like Littleman who couldn’t last a day if his cushy life was forcibly switched (Dave wakes up in an HIV-infected poor Muslim woman’s body) with any of theirs, hah!

Thank you for providing the information for CBS and the FCC. I sent the following:

“To CBS:

Evidently CBS now stands for Child Brothel Services and David Letterman is chief advocate for that venal and repugnant behavior. Given his attacks on Governor Palin’s young daughters, Letterman fosters a devaluation and denigration of women and young women especially, that is both dangerous and disgraceful. This waste of a man (and father) should be taken off the air. Until then, I sincerely hope all your advertisers reap the consequences of his indecent actions, as well as those of your network executives.

In addition to Governor Palin’s family, I can think of other unsung victims in Letterman’s deplorable attacks. I surmise that the very smug Mr. Letterman must be highly amused at a group of misfortunate women who had their throats slashed by jihadists on 9/11/2001. After all, these women fall into his “slutty flight attendants” category, don’t they?

I am only one woman, I don’t think I speak only for myself when I tell you I am livid.”

My point was-Kathy Griffin sucks.

I once heard her give a brilliant comedic evaluation of Muslim men after her trip to Afghanistan and Iraq, to entertain troops. She said that she took the trip with on of her right wing actress friends. Her routine was hillarious and courageous. To bad that in that she willingly put on the Burka for Davis Letterman last night. MAybe she is just a racist and hates misogyny when it comes from Arab men. I don’t know whats making these so called liberals go brain dead these days.

But I have to say that there is a hugh por-Obama peer presure, in the Academia, show business and the media. Some people have the gutts to be unaffected by it. Too many have no spine at all.

Hi Juliette in #46:

I tuned in to Letterman only to hear his top 10 lame excuses for calling himself a comedian. Then I resumed real living without seeing the rest of his show with Kathy Griffin. He and Child Brothel Services will have to get along with my viewership! I just surmised from your comment that K.G. descended into the mud along with him; I’ll take your word on it, Juliette.

My own point there is about responsibility. I figure you and I are using diff. phrasing to express a similar or overlapping point: she, herself, is in a position to take responsibility, just as he is, without being able to blame it on external forces, least of all those factors impinging on us in difficult jobs and situations. No excuses for her or him!

It has nothing to do with liberalism, nor communism. When I look around the halls of Academia, I see as many “conservatives” as “liberals” though neither label really fits them. WRT media, I realize a slim majority of MSM employees self-identify as “voting or leaning Democrat” in some media-industry-related polls, but in reality, Democrat does not mean liberal, nor is such polling reliable when the questions and categories are so blurry and obsolete.

I haven’t seen much of Contessa Brewer since I don’t have that cable channel but IIRC, she wouldn’t know what communism is, much less how to adhere to it at her job. She probably has sticky fingers that adhere well to money. She might personally support BHO but that wouldn’t make a communist out of her– to the contrary, she’d simply be following the corporatist highway to hell.

Doncha wish they’d stop taking the rest of us along with ‘em!?

59

Susie1945 06.11.09 at 7:13 pm

Damm – I don’t like Greta’s site – this is my wonderful post that I cannot post …….

Greta – I keep trying to post on your site but comments disappear – you will not get any responses from any of the so-called feminists – they support & selected the fraud in chief as feminist of the year – need I say more? The group I belong to PUMAPac – sent emails to CBS today, filed complaints with the FCC, and called some of the advertising sponsors of the pig’s show. I also just sent a feedback form to CBS telling them I was boycotting their network and any sponsors on their network supporting the pig’s show. Fox doesn’t seem to think PUMAPac is important but we encompass a rather large number of people as part of the PUMAsphere but the sheeple would rather pay attention to left wing kooks like the KOS, Huffpo, etc. instead of us – we formed on June 3, 2008 and are still here – still Hillary supporters but also fighting still against the sexism, misogyny, and other blatant abuses against women including islam which advocates stoning & beheading of women while all the while allowing them to cover up in a shroud. Right Social

Peer presure is never a good excuse especially for those who have power and money. As for this mentality dominating the Academia-I do see it here in Philly, a big University Town. I also see it in New York. You should hear the way I am attacked and called a right wing nut job, by those who unlike me have never lifted a finger for the democratic party, nor have ever actively protested the war. Trying to defend Palin to these insecure sycophants is quite revealing and teaches me new and disturbing things about what is wrong with my party.
I do know some people who initially refused the Kool-Aide and supported Clinton and would have voted for McCain to defeat Obama. Too many of these people, many women let themselves be dumbed down by the numerous flat out lies reported about Palin along with the hip-hate concerning her personality and folksyness.
Thanks to people like Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich, I still consider myself a liberal. Much of what Kucinich and Nader have been saying about Obama’s policies (or George Soro’s policies) is consistant with what the GOP has been saying.

65

Sunshinelvr 06.11.09 at 7:28 pm

FYI-If you signed up at any time on Greta’s site, using a different email than the one you are currently trying to post with, it WILL not accept your comments until you use the original email address. Also, her site is monitored/censored/whatever you want to call it and it has a delay of 5, 10 minutes before your comment will be posted. I found out by default! I just wanted to let y’all know and I am sure the comments will be posted as soon as they are deemed appropiate. Hope everyone has a great night!

66

Juliette 06.11.09 at 7:31 pm

Contessa
Why does the GOP need one particular spokes person. Maybe they are letting the people speak. Maybe unlike so many Obama supporters, they are not looking for a Messiah to follow.
Or perhaps you at MSNBC perfer to call him God.

Susie1945 — Great comments! I, too, wish Murphy would contact Greta and at least chat on Skype, or go on her show. Under the old Greta format, you could e-mail Greta (ontherecord@foxnews.com). Don’t know what happened to that. I liked your comment, even if it didn’t show up on gretawire! I registered with my new e-mail and couldn’t get my comment to show up either. Go figure…

Juliette in #64:

RE. our schools, I happened to have tuned in to a discussion of “Global Students” with author & parent Maya Frost, appearing on Tom Ashbrook’s radio interview/call-in show:

http://www.onpointradio.org/2009/06/the-new-global-student
“Everybody knows the straight and narrow, up-and-out formula for American success: good grades, good scores, good college, big debt…. Stay home studying for SATs and taking on college debt, and you’re guaranteed nothing in this topsy-turvy economy. Go abroad– as early as high school, especially for college, they say– and you’ll find low tuitions, big adventures, and the future.”

Some callers suggested a U.S. college education is just a more expensive extension of high school, and isn’t as rigourous or practical as students need for life and esp. for making a living. Callers and blog commenters who went abroad to live, work and study seem to agree their decision led to one-of-a-kind experiences they’d never have gotten at a typical liberal arts university in the USA. They referred to better job prospects as well as people skills.

Mention was made of Americans wearing blinkers/blinders, living in a bubble, our country being insular and provincial.

Now, why does that irk me? Maybe it’s half right, but it paints a large diverse country with too broad a brushstroke.

RE. Kucinich, I am still bothered by demeaning comments made against him and Elizabeth Harper. Pundits continue calling him an elf, a little guy etc., or worse yet, a funny looking little guy etc., and cannot fathom why “his hot wife” would be married to him– him!?– when she could have her pick of superior beings from the MSNBC line-up, and yes, that includes Rachel Maddow. Let’s be equal opportunity critics.

O/T
Looks like more Obots are being let down.

DURING THE campaign and after his election, President Obama left environmentalists in coal country with the distinct impression that he was going to do away with mountaintop removal mining in the Appalachians. That’s where coal companies expose coal seams by stripping the dirt and rock covering them or blasting the tops of mountains to bits with dynamite and then, under legally defined conditions, dump the debris into valleys. It’s a particularly destructive practice, but it’s legal. And it will remain so under a memorandum of understanding the Obama administration will announce today.

Murphy’s engaged with extracurricula involving dorta’s school right now

97

CJK 06.11.09 at 8:31 pm

Thanks, DWP. I feel pretty much the same way Susie does. I did a lot of activist stuff back in the late 70s and early 80s, lots of public speaking, debates, marches, media interviews, all that. Also, did a lot of media interviews last Aug. in Denver. But right now, I think the time is right for the PUMAPac leader, Murphy, to take the lead to show the public that PUMAPac is a leading nonpartisan group defending the rights of ALL women and speaking out against the disgusting, woman-hating remarks of Letterman and others in the media. In other words, Murphy needs to establish PUMAPac as a feminist group that the media calls first in situations like this (Not MS magazine, not NOW, etc., etc.)

98

Sunshinelvr 06.11.09 at 8:33 pm

Many of us have said that we felt Greta had a ear to PUMA, also knowing how her husband was a Hillary supporter. This would/could be the perfect opportunity for PUMA to be “heard” again, post election, AND Greta is asking to hear from us.

100

CJK 06.11.09 at 8:38 pm

P.S. I think it can be as simple as Murphy either calling in or going on OTR and just recapping what PUMAPac did in today’s prowl, and talking about the fact that PUMAPac today gave Letterman its “Daily Pig” award. (Might also mention the Contessa Brewer/John Ziegler clip, and that PUMAPac has considered giving Contessa a similar award, as I believe someone suggested today here on the blog).

He’s consistently let them down… they can’t allow themselves to admit to themselves taht they’ve been U.S.E.D. The rejection by their daddy, the object of their deep affection… uuuuused them up and spit them OUT. They can’t handle it… so, they misplace their anger on all things not-opapa. That’s the main reason the direct their hatred toward us… instead of their odaddy. They think it helps them save face. The more they attack, the larger their internal pain is. It woudl be laughable, and usually is, but were it not being so sad and pathetic. obambi made them feel like men, manly men, until he threw a $5 bill on their beds and bid them adieu.

OT follow-up for Patty in #94:

in response to Obama’s “new” old policy of letting the coal mining corporations do whatever the hell they want in the name of profit, first commenter Birdboy2 posted a poem about Obama…

(in the related article also by Jeff Biggers)
http://www.grist.org/article/Obama-moutaintop-removal/

Our hero we thought
to America brought
the change that was needed
our dreams would be seeded

An end to the war
a break for the poor
a government open and fair
committed to clean water and air

No more gifts to the wealthy
laws to keep the land healthy
but lately it seems
that those were just dreams

And the change that we need
like a forgotten seed
will rot in the ground
‘neath a rising mound
of poisonous waste
old problems not faced

He said he would fix things
is this what his day brings?

Coming out of long lurker status momentarily to mention that the idea of blocking CBS thru your cable box is one of the best boycott ideas I have heard in a long time and it needs to go viral.

Cable companies can and do keep track of blocking. I would assume that is important data collected and used by advertisers considering spending big bucks for a time slot on a specific channel.

I have blocked CBS and CBS HD on my televisions. For those people who don’t want to miss their favorite shows on that channel, there is the option of blocking a particular show.

This idea would be great to spread across the internet like wildfire. If Murphy manages to get on air with Greta, I would love to see her mention it. I will do my part by suggesting it to all those in my address book as well as all the blogs and forums I belong to.

I’m off to do some college paperwork with my daughter, but will return to my lurker status and check in later.

persephone, #112, thanks. I think today’s opportunity on gretawire and OTR represents one way PUMA might at least gain the ear of a media outlet such as Fox. To quote Rancho, “Many of us have said that we felt Greta had a ear to PUMA, also knowing how her husband was a Hillary supporter. This would/could be the perfect opportunity for PUMA to be “heard” again, post election, AND Greta is asking to hear from us.” If we can’t have a PUMA NEWS station (as much as I’d love to see that if we could finance it), we could at least gain the ear of a station like Fox, since women’s rights already have a champion there in Greta. Thanks.

Palin and her daughters. We’re trying to find a direct number for Ms. Murphy to use to call in tonight. Thank you for any help you can offer.”

DWP — You could be right about not giving pig awards to women. That was just an added thought, based on a suggestion someone made earlier today here on the blog. Doesn’t have to be included.

143

DancesWithPumas 06.11.09 at 9:48 pm

maybe no women’s groups have called greta because it’s too much of a rigamarole to get a freakin’ on air number

CJK
Of course, ultimately, it’s up to Murphy.
I liked your letter.

145

Rancho 06.11.09 at 9:51 pm

According to Greta,
“I asked our staff to call some women’s organizations that I expect would be the most outspoken about this verbal sexist and crude assault on this 14 year old girl. We decided to offer a platform to discuss this important issue. ”

Her staff did the calling. SHE decided on the women’s groups. PUMA was not asked. WE need to let them know we should have been.

just sent this email, perhaps others can send a similar one?

Hi,

I know that Greta is looking for women’s groups who are speaking out against the sexist and offensive attacks by David Letterman on Sarah Palin and her family.

Our politcal action group, Puma PAC (People United Means Action) started an email and phone call campaign today to CBS, the FCC and Letterman’s advertisers, demanding a sincere apology to Palin, her family, and all American women.

In just a few hours we have sent nearly a thousand letters to CBS and its advertisers, and made hundreds of phone calls. We’ve also initiated hundreds of complaints to the FCC about Letterman’s June 9th show.

I would be more than thrilled to talk with Greta about what REAL women’s groups are doing in response to this unacceptable behavior by a mainstream entertainer.

For the record, Puma PAC is a mostly liberal, Democratic group of women and men, but one of our core missions is to fight the sexist onslaught against public women in the mainstream media. Though we may disagree with Sarah Palin politically, we know that ALL women deserve to be protected against sexist and misogynistic smears.

Thank you very much to Greta for her wonderful work in holding politicians to a very high standard. The members of Puma PAC are enthusiastic fans of her show and her blog. Keep up the great work!

Sincerely,

Darragh Murphy
Executive Director and Founder
Puma Political Action Center, People United Means Action

You can get it if you really want – Jimmy Cliff

You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try
Try and try, you’ll succeed at last

Persecution you must bear
Win or lose you’ve got to get your share
Got your mind set on a dream
You can get it, though harder them seem now

You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try
Try and try, you’ll succeed at last
I know it, listen

Rome was not built in a day
Opposition will come your way
But the hotter the battle you see
It’s the sweeter the victory, now

You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
You can get it if you really want
But you must try, try and try
Try and try, you’ll succeed at last

Now Joy from the view made a similar statement regarding Palin pimping out her children yesterday on the show.

Sheppard says there is a lot of hate emails to him from the right. I say it’s all in how you spin/emphasize what you’re reading. I wonder how he feels about Letterman’s words!

I do not hate anyone but I do get very upset with the media spin/blatant lies. It makes you feel as if you can’t have an opinion.

Prowl done. It occurs to me how stupid political correctness is. Notice that Letterman said “slutty flight attendant.” Why not say “slutty stewardess”? I suppose he is less sexist for saying flight attendant???? What a loser he is, and what losers his writers are. I am calling M&M Mars and telling them I am boycotting in spite of their candy being a lifelong favorite and in spite of plain M&Ms being my son’s top choice. The only way I will buy M&M Mars candy ever again is if the company issues a public statement and follows through on pulling its ad buys from Letterman.

wow
go PUMA’s.

A strong message has been sent to the media-women are not going to put up with this shit.

This has generated quite a bit of publicity for Palin, and she has handled herself like a champ throughout.

#162- I agree with her politics- a helluva lot more than I agree with Obama’s.
Sound fiscal policy, demanding accountability in all levels of government, leaving her personal views at home..

What’s not to love about an honest and dedicated public servant who actually possesses some humility? (put that in your bong and smoke it, Obama!)
She was not afraid to sign gay friendly legislation.
She was not afraid to nominate a female PRO-CHOICE judge to the ASC.

And she’s not afraid to hit back.

Palin for whatever she runs for!

219

Social-Psyche 06.12.09 at 9:40 am

Unusual morning for me. I was actually flipping channels and actually stopped at MAtt Lauer– he was interviewing Sarah Palin! I might have missed the first couple of minutes but the gist is, he posed, in the guise of “tough”, the major excuses for men waging a war of both words and violence agsinst women.

He asked S.P. how she could connect the dots between an admittedly bad joke from Letterman, and the problems in Amerian culture that she repeatedly named– (hyper)sexualization and low self-esteem of girls, verbal and sexual abuse of them being deemed “Ok, acceptable and cool” (NOT!) by society, and statutory rape of them by abusive older men.

Sarah did her best to ignore his distractions as she focused on the real subject matter, i.e. what girls like Willow need and want from their society, and at the end of the interview, answering him by reading an e-mail she got from a woman who summed it all up as our nation’s constant disrespect toward females.

The interview itself was an example of that!

Hey Matt, how’s the connection between your southern head and its northern neighbour? Does the northern one ever yearn to throw off the yoke of patriarchal domination and Think Free?

But eventually, somebody will get a video of the interview and post it for y’all to experience, if you can stand it. Remember, I exposed myself to it by accident.

I did recall one more thing. Lauer tried to accuse *her* of saying something “in bad taste” when she said Willow would not want to be around any man who behaved like Letterman, because Willow, like any normal girl, would see Letterman as a threat to her. Lauer tried to trun that into Palin supposedly accusing Letterman of being not just a verbal attacker but a sexual attacker as well. Of course, Palin never made any such accusation or connection.

Palin, Letterman and the continued abuse of “the truth”
by Verbalpaintball

Fri Jun 12, 2009 at 04:22:06 AM PDT

Errol Morris, director of films such as The Thin Blue Line and A Brief History of Time made a statement recently in defense of the truth that, while being common sense to me might come off as profound to others:

Verbalpaintball’s diary :: ::
There is such a thing as truth, but we often have a vested interest in ignoring it or outright denying it.

Also, it’s not just thinking something that makes it true. Truth is not relative, it’s not subjective. It may be elusive or hidden. People may wish to disregard it. But there is such a thing as truth. And the pursuit of truth: Trying to figure out what has really happened; trying to figure out how things really are.

After eight years of George W. Bush, the truth has suffered a fatal blow in the collective conscience of this country. While others might pinpoint the beginning of this decline to Clinton’s “is” statement, I believe the truth on that is a little clouded. Clinton was in a court of law and, being of a law background himself, it is not unreasonable to demand the parsing of words, especially when you’re the one on the chopping block.

Bush and Cheney, however, were the real culprits. They spent years trying to turn the truth into a gray area. Suddenly, under these guys, a vague satellite image of trucks becomes a chemical weapon laboratory. A suggested meeting between a 9/11 hijacker and Saddam, always a lie, becomes a possible truth. An economy heading into the abyss is still “vibrant.” The fact is, the truth isn’t really malleable. It is what it is. Words don’t define the truth. The truth is that space between words and interpretation.

This brings me to one of the biggest abusers of the truth, Sara Palin. This shrew, short of actual political skill, has co-opted the Bush administrations failed “truth as a gray area” strategy and is attempting to use it to remain valid (another falsehood. She never was).

David Letterman recently made a joke about her daughter being knocked up by A-Rod. Anyone with an ounce of common sense could see who the subject was of this ribbing – Bristol Palin. She’s the one known for having been “knocked up” and it’s her life that has been under the microscope. Palin and her idiot husband have been trying to get mileage out of this by suggesting it was their younger daughter they were talking about, thus delving into the idea that Letterman was promoting the “rape” of their 14-year-old.

Was the younger daughter at the Yankee game in discussion? Sure – but comedy is not a gray area nor is it linear in it’s thinking. You have to be on-target to make a joke work and this one could only work with the recognition of who the subject matter was. It was Bristol. End of story.

The “truth” of this situation is not in parsing the words, it’s the space between. Letterman, of course, would never suggest anything so inflamatory. It’s not in his nature. The fact that these two media whores are trying to ruin his reputation so they can grab another minute in a spotlight they don’t deserve is more than pathetic, it’s borderline criminal.

Unfortunately, that 22% of the public that still loves George Bush now hates Letterman (if they didn’t before). Therefore, you’re getting numbskull responses like these in the blogs from people who have no sense of either truth or humor:

I don’t like Palin, but let’s be honest, he was talking about her 14 yr old daughter. She was the one at the Yankees game with Palin, not the 18 yr old. This guy is a sick freak. -Bob

Anyone who thinks any jokes about rape regardless of age is funny has serious issues. Another example of far left lack of class and plain meanness. You do not see the right joking about these things do you? – Mr. Joshua

Letterman just lost one more viewer any kind of joke about a raping any girl or women is in bad taste if someone had said the same thing about one of Obama girls or wife or Bill Clintons daughter they would be history. – Old Man

The fact that these morons above might be a little bit partisan is besides the point. In fact, on some level it is the point. The republican party has completely embraced this notion of the truth being gray. It’s sad. I have friends of mine that I cannot have a rational conversation with – a conversation or debate regarding well-known facts – without the truth being twisted by them. And even when you tell them the truth, they’ll tell you it’s the main stream media that’s promoting these “lies.” Hopefully, someday, the truth will be valuable again to these people. As it is right now, it’s just another casualty of their need to control the argument.

Museum shooter and Jeremiah Wright, cut from the same cloth

The shooting by James Van Brunn at the Holocaust museum for most people, was simply the act of a deranged anti-Semitic lunatic who, like most hate mongers spent his life blaming others for his own shortcoming and inadequacies.
But what could be a bigger problem for President Obama is having to deal with the fact that the day before the shooting, similar lunatic rantings were made by the man who Obama said was like a member of his own family, the man who introduced him to his wife, the man who baptized his children and the man in whose church Obama spent 17 years.
The day before the shooting at the Holocaust museum, Jeremiah Wright made statements almost identical to that of Van Brunn. Van Brunn left notes and passages on his web site claiming that Obama was “owned by the Jews”. Wright said a day before the shooting that “them Jews wont let me talk to him” .

Wright went on to say that the Jews controlled Obama, a statement almost identical to Van Brunn’s who said Jews “owned” Obama.

Given Obama’s 17 year association with Wright, one that Obama severed only because it threatened to derail his political ambitions, not based on any principle, Obama is now going to be under a microscope even if that microscope is not talked about publicly, with everything Obama says and does as it relates to Israel and the middle east dissected and analyzed. It’s not going to be easily dismissed that Obama spent 17 years in Wright’s church seemingly undisturbed by Wright’s anti-American, anti-white, anti-semitic ranting.

Given that Obama is first and foremost a political animal,Wright’s statements coming the same week as the Holocaust Museum shooting is going to put Obama in a difficult political position especially in dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian problem.

Knowing that he may be under more intense scruitiny, does he prove to the Muslim world who are liable to take Wright’s remarks seriously, that he isn’t “owned by the Jews”? Or does he prove to Jews and Israel that his 17 year association with a raving anti-Semite whose views are similar to that of the neo Nazi museum shooter and who he once called a member of his own family, that this is something he had always rejected?

My guess is the first thing Obama will do is what he always does when he feels faced with a political problem. The speech is probably being written right now.

simofish in #224:

You’ve distilled the 20-trillion-dollar question!

I’ll try to answer it with just one cookie for energy; I’d really need all the cookies in the entire world.

The outrage has been beaten out of women like Contessa. Even setting aside the usual threat and delivery of physical harm, we can safely bet she has been emotionally, verbally and financially beaten down, year after year, since the day she was born what Simone de Beauvoir called The Second Sex– the inferior gender, the punching-bag of choice, the whipping girl for a violent patriarchy.

Ain’t it peckuliar how “whipping girl” doesn’t exist in our colloquial lexicon? The same goes for “women bashing” as in bashing OF women, because only bashing BY women gets real attention.

Look more closely at that kind of phraseology, or rather the absence of it in our daily conversations. No need to waste time coining special attention-grabbing labels such as “whipping girl” and “women bashing” because they would merely describe behaviours well-known as normal, commonplace, and acceptable!

In fact, such behaviour and the language to go with it are so sickeningly “normal” that not only the media but even the general public are giving disproportionate attention to negative reactions and inaction by women, no matter if they/we are in the “feminist organization” category or one of the MSM toadies like Contessa Brewer.

My last point here is that we have to choose our battles carefully. If I had just one last Dubious Distinction kind of “award” to hand out, I wouldn’t want to spend it or my time on Contessa. Discuss her behaviour and mentality, yes, if it leads to better understanding and effective strategies. But I’m not going to single her out for special condemnation, any more than I want to keep reading blog comments on how “feminists” are allegedly failing, falling, and stalling. It’s the same old blame game!

Which feminists? What groups? How does a blog commenter “know” the political party affiliation of a feminist, if any?

I won’t sit back and let both feminism and liberalism be attacked for some imaginary crimes against humanity– the same imaginary crimes for which all women and girls are being attacked and punished.

We’re never good enough. We never do anything right. We are to blame for everything wrong in our society. Somehow, we become all-powerful, all-knowing when any problem arises; if the root cause is male hatred of anything female, somehow we are to blame for that, too.

You and I should have said or done something! Contessa should have. Every calico and tortoiseshell Cat should have hissed and thpat! Anybody and everything Female are to blame. Always.

The Democratic Party has been at it a while, and they are damned sneaky.

My prediction-next they will support a female Muslim candidate for Congress or Senate, and support her right to wear a Hijab.

Things are going to change quickly in America, and the media will not be keeping us informed.

TEHRAN (Reuters) – A representative of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the conservative president was ahead in Friday’s presidential vote, contradicting an earlier statement by an ally of his main moderate rival, Mirhossein Mousavi.

“Based on the evaluation of Ahmadinejad’s position he is ahead … with 60 percent of the votes and we are certain that the election will end in the first round in his favor,” Ali Asghar Zarei was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.

He is Ahmadinejad’s representative at a supervisory election body, Mehr said.

Earlier on Friday, Sadegh Kharazi, an ally of Mousavi, told Reuters that surveys made by reformers showed that the former prime minister was getting about 58-60 percent of the votes cast so far.

GOSUEF4HIL 06.12.09 at 11:38 am

HopePuma-

if I may, not being an expert on the site but being a blogger who moved here after Hillary’s blog site was overtaken by Obots-

The purpose for this site has evolved- we initially worked to get a fair primary election- which did not happen- and we then worked to defeat Obama- who we consider to be a false candidate- not elected but selected by the DNC. There were many approaches to defeating Obama- not just voting McCain- as many dyed in the wool democrats were unable to do (I was not one of them- I had no problem putting experience above facade).

One of the biggest issues on this blog has been the on-going sexism. But what has been most disappointing- although eye-opening- is that the left leaning media and women’s organizations are happy to protect left leaning women but feel perfectly fine with the onslaught of misogyny directed at conservative women.

Before getting involved last year- NEVER in my life think I would defend a woman like Sarah Palin. However, this site allowed me to see that true opportunity and access must be for ALL women, not just with women with whom we are politically aligned.

Lastly, I am somewhat uncomfortable in the Islam/Muslim talk here and I don’t necessarily agree w/ the derogatory comments made towards Muslims- I truly believe in freedom of and from religion- there are good and bad points to all religions- or lack of religion- but I am not in favor of lumping an entire religious group into a sterotype.

That being said, I come as often as possible to stay in the loop of what the MSM refuses to report-

Hope that helps and I haven’t been on too much of a soap box

The media is pretending Mousavi is a “reformer.”

Red flag-He has the support of the (Fundamentalist) Clerics.

Red flag-His highly educated wife, a former political consultant and university chancellor, resigned from public life some time ago.
Wearing a headscarf with flowers on it does not exactly make her a rebel in my book.
When interviewed she gushes on about her husband, says that Muslim women will always cover themselves as the Koran demands, and also that relations between Iran and Israel will not improve.

Not much will change in Iran.

TY for the history GoSue4Hil. It’s evolving then? Is it still a Political Action Committee? You mention the religious; is there much “bashing” of religion? Please be honest with me. I have to admit that I am a Christian. Not as “religion” but as a “personal relationship with Christ” person- non denominational; and, in fact, I don’t even go to any church. I don’t “push” my religion on anyone else though. Let me get back to the evolving question. Are there men in the group or is it evolving into a woman’s group by virtue of there only being women in it?

Ziegler makes derogatory comments about women quite frequently himself.

While I’m glad for the “Media Matters” film, when he was in my neighborhood screening it last week I skipped it after hearing him on talk radio spewing some bullshit about how Barack Obama must really be a woman because he just can’t seem to make up his mind.

Every time he opens his mouth he inserts his foot.

He respects women when it’s convenient for him to do so-he’s no feminist.

How does a PAC consisting of so many former HRC supporters separate women’s issues from politics after what we saw last year?

I have an easy fix.

For me, (maybe due to browser settings interacting with WP template) the message box on the blog is displayed with tiny text; correcting my many typos would be hard if I can’t recognize a lot of the characters. So I’ve been using a solution that gives me a couple of bonuses.

I write most of my comments in a reliable, customizable text editor, then preview the file in a browser window (tab) to ctahc typos and HTML mistaes before I hot the Submit button… er, I mean, to catch my typos and HTML coding mistakes, correct them, and ‘Save’ the file, all before I hit the Submit button.

If comments don’t go through for any reason, then I still have my own copies.

I save them in a simple HTML file with a basic but adequate header & footer, between which I write or copy/paste my ramblings.

HTH.

persephone in #255 and DWP in #257:

I’m a web designer as well as a writer & editor (among other hats I wear), so typing HTML codes has become 2nd nature to me. A blog post only needs a few simple codes anyway.

Once you’ve got the handful of lines for a basic page layout (template or boilerplate) set up, it’s all gravy after that. It’s hardly any trouble.

I’d reproduce them here but since it’s code, I’m not sure if even a <code> tag would let it be displayed OK in my comment.

It’s a practical solution to the problem of losing time & effort spent putting together a comment; based on what PUMAs have said here and elsewhere, the problem is quite common and annoying. I don’t know how much or how little any given comment is worth. But our time is worth something. Dances, *your* Time is obviously worth something; you and I are old enough to know time deserves a capital T. Good ideas are worth something, too. You’ve had a few of those, Dances! So if our ideas are worthy enough to bother posting at all, then I insist the problem of losing them deserves a solution.

That’s why I offered one. You can take it or leave it, but as another old saying goes, don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it.

I never feel excluded. I sometimes do the e-mail prowls, the phone calls not really. I’ll use the excuse that I am usually logged on at work but the truth is I hate talking on the phone.

At any rate, if the PUMA world is mostly women, so be it. The only people that seem to have a clue about what is really going on are found here and at The Confluence and a few other places. The Pumasphere is he first place I go for news every morning.

I am proud to be a part of it regardless of what the gender make up is.

I wasn’t knocking your method, and I didn’t get that persephone was either. Sorry if you took it that way.

ron4hills,
exactly… something like ‘principles over personalities’ … or, principles over gender. There are men here who I feel more closely aligned with politically than some of the women here, and, of course, the reverse is also true. Speaking strictly for myself (goes without saying), it isn’t about gender as much as it is about consciousness and mutual perspectives and goals.

persephone in #285:

I must’ve had a psy flash bringing me back here when I already was at the new thread. Hmmmm….

I enjoy YOUR comments, per-seph-o-ne! I didn’t think you were knocking/funnin’ at my method. Au contraire. I am well aware that technical matters can loom large in our minds– larger than they really are, like K. Hepburn’s character of Pat, the tennis player (in Pat & Mike), who saw the ball get larger and faster each time her opponent volleyed back.

I don’t think Dances was knocking the method really, though that part of my comment was for her.

It’s just one of my pet peeves. I’m peeved, irked and addled too that anything marked “technical” is seen as too much trouble somehow. It feels dismissive to me– dismissive toward women, who once again are seen by men, or see themselves, as not knowing enough, not saying anything of importance to bother with, and not being able to master technology, basic technology, to expose those negative assumptions as MOOT if not just plain WRONG.

//end of my Women & Technology rant//

Btw, I typed this inside the tiny message box.

If you didnt think I was knocking your method.. why woudl you address that remark to me? Don’t answer. Rhetorical.

DWP:

The expression “don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it” is more rhetorical than your question is.

IOW, I cited that old saying to highlight the exp. of trying something new, not to focus on the level of difficulty, which is subjective to a great extent. I used words like easy, basic and simple, and tried to be encouraging. For you, it would be trouble you’d have to go through, as in (my words, my interpretation) endure, as in pain or at least PITA.

I’m sorry you think these are PITAs but they’re essential to using the blog (more) effectively. The transparent GIF is another example; check my e-mail to you from a few days ago.

I didn’t say they were a pain in the ass.
We’ve had transparent and resized graphics in the media library for quite some time now. It’s a matter of finding time to substitute them.
Thanks for your advice.

I can’t be sure if you and I are referring to the same image for the same purpose.
Reply via e-mail would be clearer.

{{imagine the sound of my head against the wall, or desk since that’s closer}}

In general, replacing an image is one of the easiest, quickest steps of all. In this case just upload, to the same location, a transparent version of the picture but with the same name and dimensions. The upload will take seconds.

Changing image dimensions in the layout is also easy and quick; just edit the Width and Height numbers in the pic’s IMG SRC tag, whether within a single page or in a template/script used on multiple pages.

Thanks for your advice.
The best form of thanks would be to apply my advice to the blog pages, not to please me but to fix the distorted display of some very fine images, some of which you yourself, Dances, designed and/or produced.

I didn’t say they were a pain in the ass.
I already said PITA etc. was my own phrasing. You said my solution was “trouble” you’d have to “go through”….

We might or might not be talking about the same thing now. I’m only guessing you think the steps and methods I’ve offered to you are more difficult– while also being less important– for you to learn to do than they actually are. I apologise if I’m not explaining their usefulness in a persuasive and clear enough way.
