“Asked if he had spoken to the president [since the election], Wright said: “Them Jews aren’t going to let him talk to me.’”
Them Jews? Reverend Wright’s not the only one chafing at how much control “them Jews” supposedly wield.
Seems to me the President’s pastor for 20 years, Barack Obama’s “father figure,” in whose honor he titled his mega-best-seller “The Audacity of Hope,” shares the same view of “Jews” as this guy:
“Bit by bit Liberalism ascended. Bit by bit the Constitution was re-interpreted. Bit by bit government institutions and Congressmen fell into JEW hands — then U.S. diplomacy, businesses, resources and manpower came under JEW control.”
James von Brunn has been named as the shooter who terrorized the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. today. He allegedly opened fire in the museum, shooting a security guard before being shot by another security guard. The museum has been visited by more than 30 million people since it opened in 1993 and was full with at least 2,000 school children and tourists when the anti-Semite von Brunn attacked.
There is unquestionably a direct link between the rhetoric of people like Bill O’Reilly and Operation Rescue’s Randall Terry and the murder of Dr. George Tiller. There is also a direct link between the hateful, anti-semitic, racist rhetoric of Jeremiad Wright and the despicable act of cowardly terrorism at the Holocaust Museum today.
And when anti-gay, misogynistic, homophobic bloggers use the same sort of demonizing lies to dehumanize US we have very good reason to be concerned.

“The Sotomayor nomination commits the cardinal sin of identity politics: It seeks to elevate people more for the political currency of their gender and ethnicity than for their individual merit.”
Meaning, if the nominee isn’t white (or even black now), and male, their selection is somehow suspect and couldnt possibly be based on merit.
Shelby Steele, just another fuckwit. Ya gotta wonder if Steele’s current position was given to him based the political currency of his race. Tokenism in the name of a face-lifting of the republican party.
He also used Judge Sotomayor’s ‘woman/latina = more wise’ comment out of context of the original premise. Just another tool in a too long line of shmucks.

You know, all of the obamapheebles who attribute questioning the president of the united states to “hate” (dog-whistle: racist), are themselves racists. When they look at, or feebly defend obama, it’s based on race. That’s all they see when they look at him, apparently.
Calling doubters out on racism is simply projection on their part.
They. are. racist.
Call me anything you like, I’m numb to it due to over use.

While I have no doubt Wright has “issues” with Jewish people, I wonder to which “Jews” surrounding Obama he was speaking of. Axelrod? Emanuel? Soros? It doesn’t seem his “them Jews aren’t going to let him talk to me” comment was a generalized indictment, but a specific one. Which in no way excuses it, btw. I would hope that would go without saying, but, I’m aware nothing goes without saying anymore.

Here’s an e-mail going around the net. Hope it is real!
This letter you are about to read was written by a 4th grade teacher
this past week. She even gave the world her telephone and fax numbers.
We are in dire need of more true American citizens who are proud of
OUR United States of America. WAKE UP AMERICA . . . please . . .
before it is too late!
April 27, 2009
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington , DC 20500
Mr. Obama:
I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your
recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate
representative of the United States of America collectively or of me
personally. You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim
world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the
United States of America. You are responsible to the citizens of the United
States.
You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth. I
personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United
States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their
status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the
Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of
Europe? Are you brain dead?
What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not understand or
know the history of the 20th century? Where do you get off telling a Muslim
country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country?
Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the
United States? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the
principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come
directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?
Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our
President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia.
You don’t show Great Britain, our best and one of our oldest allies, the
respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia. How dare
you, sir! How dare you!
You can’t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation
because you don’t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque
in Turkey. You offended our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans
more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves.
What’s the matter with you?
I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the
historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of
yourselves, all of you. You are so self-righteously offended by the big
bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the
real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie
Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you
intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it.
What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to
their staff members — on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises
that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a
17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer.
You haven’t said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn’t!
Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in
bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that’s $45 million more than the AIG
bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded
$51 million — not a bad take.
Who authorized that and why haven’t you expressed your outrage at this group
who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.
I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not
caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we
are getting increasingly fed up with all of you. I also want you to know
that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive
to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you
that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two
terms destroying my beautiful country.
Sincerely,
Every Real American
P.S. I rarely ask that emails be ‘passed around’………….

Americans to wake up!

Dr. Warren Hern, a friend of George Tiller’s, had this to say on AMy Goodman’s radio show this morning:
“I think that the President of the United States has to go on—address the nation—this is a crisis, this is a serious, serious crisis—and make a clear statement that hasn’t been made before by any president of the United States, that women have the right to have a safe abortion; that safe abortion is a fundamental component of women’s healthcare in this country; that doctors should not have to fear for their lives to help women; that the anti-abortion violence and terrorism has to stop, it will not be tolerated; that the people that threaten doctors and threaten women and threaten the clinic workers are terrorists, and they will be brought to justice, and they may not do these things; that the anti-abortion fanatics need to shut up and go home and leave other people alone.”

The president needs to take a stand against this hate speech. I dont even have the requisite peace of mind to be sarcastic about this and say, Dont hold your breath Dr. Hern.

from previous thread, I just caught up with you. Hard for me to do! Btw, I love your name.
to the point, you are reading me wrong. I do not believe that every Muslim who commits a violent act is motivated by religion. I do believe that if the Muslim is also part of the Jihad, that the motive is in part religious. I believe this based on my understanding of Jihad. I am always open to more information. Do you think it is wrong for me to conclude that the men on the video are jihadists and that jihadists act at least in part on religious motives?
I know there are peaceful verses in the Koran too, just as the Bible contains peace and love in parts and yet in other parts legitimizes genocide, if you will, with respect to those who worshiped Ashtoreth. See Merlin Stone, When God Was A Woman.

I didn’t see anything bad about Sotomayor, but I have to pick up my kids and can’t really respond to your concern right now. I saw you mention her distinction between white and Latina. That does not bother me in and of itself. We can trust the Repubs to find all dirt in her 3,000 odd opinions (or whatever the number), so if she is not a good decision-maker because of an inherent bias against “whites” in favor of Hispanics, I am sure we will find out in July. There is probably a group of paid researchers devoted solely to that task as we type.

Scott Roeder has been charged with one count of first degree murder.
http://www.kansascity.com/934/gallery/1226113.html
James von Brunn will be charged with first degree murder and 15 counts of committing a terrorist act (for the other person he shot and the people he pointed the gun at).
How come Roeder isn’t being charged with terrorist acts?
looks like Napolitano was right.
DeadGirl 06.10.09 at 6:20 pm
“looks like Napolitano was right”
I would not go that far, Murphy…
Now, if the millions of veterans and pro-lifers start committing acts like this, then we might recognize a pattern.
What we are seeing, are people stressed by “change”, rapid change, economic turmoil, etc. They have been acting out and committing acts of targeted murder and mass murder because they are unstable and these are unstable times. It just brings it out in these deranged individuals.
I am not going to let my mind get turned, based on these acts. I need to stay focused. When we see effectively executed acts of terrorism, ala Twin Towers, PA and Pentagon, and yes, the Oklahoma City Federal Building, then yes, we have a domestic terror problem. I would rather Uncle Sam keep an eye on the Muslim next door if he is acting suspicious, than the veteran down the street just looking at guns online.

I meant to say,” if more of the millions of veterans and pro-lifers”
murphy 06.10.09 at 6:26 pm
dead girl, a-yup. agreed.
I still say there is an important connection between the rhetoric of hate speech and the violent acts of (admittedly deranged) men like Roeder and von Brunn.

Terror Names Linked To Doomed Air France Flight 447
Peter Allen, in Paris
Two passengers with names linked to Islamic terrorism were on the Air France flight which crashed with the loss of 228 lives, it has emerged.
French secret servicemen established the connection while working through the list of those who boarded the doomed Airbus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 31.
While it is certain there were computer malfunctions, terrorism has not been ruled out.
Soon after news of the fatal crash broke, agents working for the DGSE (Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure), the French equivalent of MI6, were dispatched to Brazil.
It was there that they established that two names on the passenger list are also on highly-classified documents listing the names of radical Muslims considered a threat to the French Republic.
A source working for the French security services told Paris weekly L’Express that the link was “highly significant”.
Agents are now trying to establish dates of birth for the two dead passengers, and family connections.
There is a possibility the name similarities are simply a “macabre coincidence”, the source added, but the revelation is still being “taken very seriously”.
France has received numerous threats from Islamic terrorist groups in recent months, especially since French troops were sent to fight in Afghanistan.

Sick, crazy, killers are not left, right, or middle. They are just bad people, and they need to be dealt with.
To attach them to any political preference, demonizes the majority who are peaceful and tolerant.
DeadGirl 06.10.09 at 6:51 pm
Excellent point, Silence.
admin 06.10.09 at 7:04 pm
I disagree Silence. Scott Roeder is definitely a bad person, no question. However it is not I who am attaching him to a political or religious preference. He himself characterized himself as a Christian Republican doing the Lord’s work. Randall Terry, who is responsible for the rhetoric that inflames the sick minds of people like Roeder, also attaches himself to very specific religious and political preferences: Christianity and right wing Republicanism.
Same with von Brunn. Neo-nazism is a cult and an organized terrorist organization.
That doesnt mean all Republicans and Christians are partly responsible. of course not. But the Christians and Republicans who fan the flames of violence and extremism ARE partly responsible.
Rev Wright IS responsible for twisting minds in his church to HATE white people abd HATE America. He knows what he’s doing. Just like Randall Terry knows.
these killers are NOT lone whackos who came out of nowhere. They attached themselves to larger groups and ideologies.
I’ve spent the last 4 hours questioning my own uses of rhetoric looking for any ways in which what I say or write might incite a sick person to do a very bad thing.
Axelrod and obama ARE partly responsible for the sick, misogynistic acts of their followers during the primaries and general election. They had a responsibility to take a stand, and they did NOTHING.
The uses and responsibilities of rhetoric are important. People with bull horns have a duty not to use their megaphones to spread lies and inspire hatred.

Dragonfly, I don’t know whether it’s wrong of you to conclude that the men on the film are jihadis or not. I didn’t, and won’t, watch it. I did, though, ask what evidence there is on the film that the men are jihadis. I’m not going to accept Gellar’s word that they are. She’s a bigot and a propagandist of whe worst sort.
Soldiers commit atrocities because they demonize their enemies and have been given permission to kill. They don’t always commit these atrocities out of the motives that sent them to war. If we have to assume that every Muslim jihadi who commits an atrocity commits it out of devotion to the jihad and in the belief that it is commanded by his religion, though, we are going to have to be open to the idea that the American troopers who raped and killed a 14-year-old girl in Fallujah, after murdering her entire family in front of her, were acting out of sincere patriotism at a minimum or out of patriotism and their own religion.
Personally, I think the soldiers who raped and killed that child did so because they’re sociopathic scum whose inclinations came to the surface in war. Until I see actual evidence to the contrary, I’m going with the default position that the men who killed the woman in the film were likewise sociopathic scum, acting out of sadism and the same perversions that motivate any other sociopathic scum–and that the murderers’ respective religions were irrelevant until shown to be otherwise.
I’ve read Merlin Stone several times; I’m a pagan. I also believe that monotheism, beginning with Akhenaten, tends to produce intolerance and, when power is added to piety, persecution.
Cinie 06.10.09 at 8:12 pm
Ditto, Waterpanther, Murphy.
Cinie 06.10.09 at 8:17 pm
Waterpanther, Akhenaten was pretty misunderstood, imo. I have some theories about the early Egyptian hierarchy that differ from the mainstream, to say the least. But, long story short, I think Akhenaten’s reign was usurped and his “monotheism” was just a way of getting his back. The forces against him were powerful military/priestly factions and did a pretty good job of revising his history. Same with Hapsetshut. We’ll talk one day, huh?
BigCatLover 06.10.09 at 8:34 pm
Akenaten was a fascinating character who made the mistake of wanting to take the power away from the powers that be in Egyptian worship.
Cinie 06.10.09 at 8:59 pm
It’s been a long time since I’ve studied the subject, BCL, but I remember seeing a pretty good case that the powers that wanted to be took Ahkenaten’s power from him first. But, you could be right.
BigCatLover 06.10.09 at 9:04 pm
His story also includes Nerfertiti (a woman of course) who is also portrayed as trying to grab power from/via Akhanetan and then King Tut, so who knows what the real story is.
DeadGirl 06.10.09 at 9:04 pm
Ahkenaten is a very interesting figure from history. They tried to eliminate his image, and name, yet, they did not succeed. I read the book The Egyptian when I was a little kid, and that gave me an introduction to the mystery.
yup, I too am an egyptophile, and Fraud, you ain’t no Tut!!!

Cinie 06.10.09 at 9:15 pm
I remember reading all kind of theories about Ahkenaten, from Nefertiti being the real monarch, to him being the real Moses. Here’s a little something on Nefertiti:
http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/nefertiti.htm
BigCatLover 06.10.09 at 9:41 pm
Another interesting aspect of Akhenaten is his body shape and facial shape. In all his depictions he has a narrow chest and broad hips like a female (see Cinie’s link and the illustration after the subheading ‘Religion’). His face is long and thin with a protruding mouth. There is speculation that he had some sort of disease or genetic condition that mishaped his body. All in all, historians have always been fascinated by him and Nefertiti.
Casper Cat 06.10.09 at 9:50 pm
While we are on the subject of Nefertiti… take a look… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1GULSVk5dc
waterpanther 06.10.09 at 9:53 pm
Cinie, I’d love to talk about Ahkenaten with you. I think he made Nefertiti his co-regent fairly early in his reign, and that she held power as senior pharaoh, with Tutankhamen as her co-regent, until her death sometime before he reached adulthood.
Whether or not Akhenaten was “the real Moses,” I think he influenced Judaism profoundly. (Or rather, the faith that would become Judaism after it shed all of its pantheon but Yahweh.) Psalm 114 is clearly derived from his “Hymn to the Aten,” and there are other similarities in both theology an imagery.
BigCatLover 06.10.09 at 10:00 pm
waterpanther 06.10.09 at 9:53 pm

Watepanther, I think the Eurocentric male interpretation of royal succession is wrong. Divinity was passed from mother to daughter, with oldest son being “Pharaoh.” I think that’s why they think Pharaohs married their sisters, they can’t wrap their heads around the idea that to be king you had to be descended from a Queen. But, it seems a society influenced by bee society would do it that way, from Queen to Queen. If no sons, royal husband would “rule,” but true power would always be with the matriarch.
DeadGirl 06.10.09 at 10:24 pm
Juliette, do you really think Letterman will apologize???
Letterman is another, sorta “legend” who turned out to be shabbier than one could ever have imagined him to be…
I have to admit, I was a Letterman, as opposed to Tonight Show watcher, same with SNL…
I think the only one of them I can still handle is Whoopie Goldberg. Whoopie can say about anything imaginable and still get a pass from me… Can’t help it. I still like Oprah too. She never went in the gutter, she just stayed on the PC safe side in spurning Sarah Palin. She will come too eventually, I think they all will. Give it time… I just think Oprah was terribly naive ~ and if she had taken her feel a little further, when she left Rev Wrong church, she would see clearly, TOTUS just a phony… he never did anything for anyone that did not benefit him. Just ask the residents of Grove Park, Oprah! Its in their works, and their philanthropy. The Phony is not even in their league and they bow their knee to him.
My philosphy is that a lot of really good people thought they were doing the wonderful, right thing, supporting the Televangelist Grifter. Don’t we all know good people who did?
Silence Dogood 06.10.09 at 10:25 pm
Admin,
What about those who kill Marines at a recruiting station? That guy wasn’t from the right… he’d be a lot closer to the left.
This is why crazy is crazy. Neither side would sanction murder.
DeadGirl 06.10.09 at 10:27 pm
Cinie, matrilineal recognition, I always felt, was another male construct, based on, well, you might not KNOW for sure 100% (before DNS testing) who the baby daddy is, but you ALWAYS KNOW for sure who the baby momma is
LinTex 06.10.09 at 10:33 pm
I have to strongly disagree that Rev Wright or Bill O’Reilly are
responsible for the actions of these crazy murderers. First you would
have to assume they they actually watched Bill O’Reilly or heard REv
Wright make his hateful remarks. These people would have had their
crazy obsessions/views for a lifetime and only they are to blame for
their actions. The times we are now living in are bringing all the crazies
out of the woodwork, this is just beginning.

David Letterman responds to flap over Sarah Palin jokes
Jun 10, 2009, 07:09 PM | by Josh Rottenberg
Taping tonight’s episode of The Late Show, David Letterman took a few minutes to respond to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called him “pathetic” in a radio interview after he made her and her family the butt of a recent Top 10 list. The late-night host had drawn particular fire from Palin and some pundits for a joke about one of Palin’s daughters being impregnated by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a trip to Yankee Stadium. Camp Palin apparently took the joke to be a crack against Palin’s 14-year-old daughter Willow, who had recently attended a Yankees game, but Letterman insisted today that the real target was 18-year-old daughter Bristol.
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

I don’t know anything about baseball or Alex Rodriguez, but one would think that he would have something to say about his name being attahed to a joke about rapping an eight grade girl.
I try to talk to my brothers, both of which have tween and teen daughters. I try to make them seee what’s happening in our ghetto culture. We really need men to step up and denounce this swamp misogyny that dominates our culture today.
Alex Rodriguez should be equally insulted for being portrayed as a child rapist in Letterman’s sick and disgusting joke.
Any man who loves and respects women and girls; speak up!

I am sure Letterman’s apology will be the insincere kind; you know the kind that you make to save your ass, the kind that is full of buts.
I was a fan of his and SNL to. But as in Murphy’s experience, I grew up and they did not. SNL writers suck now and I think they must all be stoned half of the time. Letterman stated to lose me when he started making so many disparaging remarks about his own wife. He is really just a dirty old man.
During the election his head got so big with that stunt he pulled about McCain not showing up for an interview. T.V. personalities and Hollywood types seem to think that the world revolves around them. I’ve been staying away from that kind of “entertainment” and stick to my civilized world of classical music where this ghetto culture shit doesn’t fly.
Did you see the cover of Newsweek with Oprah on it?
admin 06.10.09 at 11:34 pm
LinTex, I agree with you that these times are bringing out the crazies and that there are always crazies among us, But I believe this means people with power (and those who have media megaphones or church megaphones have REAL power. as do presidents — as Teddy Roosevelt said, the presidency is the best pulpit from which to persuade people) that people who use words and ideas to wield power have an even GREATER responsibility in times like these use their words carefully.
there is no question that the radio broadcasters in Rwanda helped incite and prolong the genocide. there is no question that the supportive backdrop of Operation Rescue helped Scott Roeder justify his hateful crimes.
just like there is no question that the cruel and misogynistic jokes by Letterman help to “normalize” sexist attacks on girls and women.
Can Oreilly or Terry be prosecuted? of course not, nor should they be. I’m not talking about legal responsibility. I’m talking about moral responsibility. Those who have the means and the power to shape thoughts and opinions, to persuade people with ideas, have a moral duty not to lie or incite violence.
Rev Wright is an abomination because of how he uses the power and influence he has. He could be such a force for good and healing. Instead he is a force for hate and division.
admin 06.10.09 at 11:36 pm

either that or I;ve never grown up either.
It was dragonfly who made that astute observation.
Cape Hatteras 06.10.09 at 11:40 pm

In the real world talking like that would earn serious beating.

Juliette, yup. Apologies with the words “but” and “if” in them are pretty much meaningless.

“Just watched Letterman to see what he had to say for himslef. ‘Still a dirty old man who tried to lie his way out of the mess he made in a style he must have borrowed from O’Burka himself. It is sad when people think they are liberals, but in fact they are just libertines.
God, I hpoe Governor Palin never goes on that show.
Conan was great, he did a skit on a political debate between Ahmadinejad and his opponent in Iran’s up coming election.
It’s nice when comedians know who to make the brunt of their jokes.
Juliette 06.11.09 at 12:21 am
Reverend Wright was not the only Jew hater that Obama was close to. There is also that professor from Columbia University, El Khalidi, I think is his name. Then of course there is Fahrakhan.
Obama is a hater and even if some of you believe he was at United Trinity Church for the P.R., keep in mind that it was the only spiritually upbringing he eer gave his daughter. They spent their entire young lives attending United Trinity.
admin 06.11.09 at 12:26 am
juliette, yup. Like the rest of the world I am pretty much smitten with Mahlia and Sasha. Like Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton (even the Bush twins) I really think children are totally off-limits. Which is why I never write about them, but yeah — lousy lousy place to bring your children for spiritual development.

Your right, children are definitly off limits, It was in no way their fault that there parents dragged them to that place of hate to listen to the words of a mad man.

Does anyone know if Omeish won the delegate position in Virginia’s 35th? God if he did I might just have to become a republican!

http://edgeoforever.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/letterman-wrong-daughter-new-joke/
Dragonfly 06.11.09 at 8:16 am
Good morning, PUMAs.
Sorry I missed you waterpanther – I can tell I would really enjoy talking more with you. I have been thinking about what you wrote for a while, and I frankly can’t do a response that covers all the ideas raised.
You asked “what evidence there is on the film that the men are jihadis. I’m not going to accept Gellar’s word that they are. She’s a bigot and a propagandist of the worst sort.”
I don’t think there is anything on the video (there is no audio, so I don’t know what they are saying) that identifies them as jihadis. Gellar may be what you say. It would be helpful to know where Gellar got these videos and why she thinks these guys are jihadis. It would also help to know what they are saying. I don’t have those answers, but your question is a good one. I’ve seen so much of this violence that it seemed obviously connected, but perhaps the full moon filled me with too much Nemesis rage.
You also say:
“Soldiers commit atrocities because they demonize their enemies and have been given permission to kill. They don’t always commit these atrocities out of the motives that sent them to war. If we have to assume that every Muslim jihadi who commits an atrocity commits it out of devotion to the jihad and in the belief that it is commanded by his religion, though, we are going to have to be open to the idea that the American troopers who raped and killed a 14-year-old girl in Fallujah, after murdering her entire family in front of her, were acting out of sincere patriotism at a minimum or out of patriotism and their own religion.”
I disagree partly, but you are identifying a logical possibility. Sure, there must be pure sociopaths who don’t give a flip about the Prophet and love the chance to participate in the Jihad for the fun of hurting others. I had not considered it. So your point about not assuming every Jihadi is actually motivated by faith makes sense.
Even if we assume all Jihadi are motivated by faith, I don’t think we have to be open to considering patriotism or religion as a motivator for US soldiers to commit war crimes. I think war crimes by US soldiers are distinctly different from Jihad, which is the struggle to destroy those who won’t convert. My assertion warrants more explanation, but I will leave that to someone with military experience.
Of course, in the end, women of all cultures and ages are raped and killed by men, period. Maybe we should not worry about figuring out the motivating factors.
I do agree with you here:
“Personally, I think the soldiers who raped and killed that child did so because they’re sociopathic scum whose inclinations came to the surface in war. Until I see actual evidence to the contrary, I’m going with the default position that the men who killed the woman in the film were likewise sociopathic scum, acting out of sadism and the same perversions that motivate any other sociopathic scum–and that the murderers’ respective religions were irrelevant until shown to be otherwise.”
and the easiest part to respond to:
“I’ve read Merlin Stone several times; I’m a pagan. I also believe that monotheism, beginning with Akhenaten, tends to produce intolerance and, when power is added to piety, persecution.”
I absolutely agree. I bet you and I have read a lot of the same books, waterpanther. See ya sometime soon I hope.

Zhara Rahnavard, wife of the “reformist” presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi (opponent of Iranian President Ahmadinejad) was interviewed on Tuesday by BBC reporter Lyse Doucet.
Mrs. Rahnavard has been called the “Michelle Obama” of Iran by CNN
In this interview, this self-proclaimed reformist tells Doucet that the Koran instructs Muslim women to wear cover themselves and that “nobody can change it.”
The reporter goes on to ask if she sees better relations between Iran and the US.
Rahnavard replies that Iran will have better relations with all countries, all over the world, “EXCEPT FOR ISRAEL.”
