Asked why he was naming some of his rivals to top administration jobs, President Lyndon B. Johnson said it best: “I’d rather have them inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.” President Obama seems to echo Johnson’s management style in his handling of Bill and Hillary Clinton. By bringing them into his inner circle, he has marginalized them both and sharply reduced their freedom of action.
It may appear odd to describe a secretary of State as marginalized, but Obama has surrounded Hillary with his people and carved up her jurisdiction geographically. Former Sen. George Mitchell (D-Maine) is in charge of Arab-Israeli relations. Dennis Ross has Iran. Former U.N. Ambassador Dick Holbrooke has Pakistan and Afghanistan. And Hillary has to share her foreign policy role on the National Security Council (NSC) with Vice President Biden, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, CIA chief Leon Panetta, and NSC staffer Samantha Powers (who once called Hillary a “monster”).
With peers who are competitors and subordinates who can deal directly with the president, Hillary is reduced to announcing foreign aid packages for Pakistan while Holbrooke does the heavy lifting.
Part of Hillary’s problem is the institutional shrinking of the State Department. During the Bush years, while war raged, the Defense Department became more relevant to the conduct of foreign policy. And, under Obama, the financial crisis has propelled the Treasury into the forefront. State, with its emphasis on traditional diplomacy, has been forced to take a back seat. Even though Obama appointed Hillary, he clearly has not been willing to make her a co-president and confines her to the diminished role of her department.
For his part, Bill Clinton has been asked to be a special envoy to Haiti. Yes, Haiti. Obama’s predecessor asked the former president to orchestrate the response to the Asian tsunami and then to Hurricane Katrina. Obama gives him Haiti.
Meanwhile, both Clintons are effectively muzzled and cannot criticize Obama even as he reverses President Clinton’s free market proclivities and budget balancing discipline. Hillary, the supposed friend of Israel, must sit by quietly and watch Iran get the bomb while trying all the while to stop Israel from preventing it.
Bill can’t even make money. Denied the ability to accept speeches from foreign governments or their organs and fenced out of continuing his profitable relationship with the Emir of Dubai, he and his wife must accept the loss of the $13 million they spent on her campaign and sit by passively, unable to earn the money to replace it.
Just as Lincoln buried his rivals Seward, Chase and Stanton in the Cabinet and then on the Supreme Court, and Wilson buried Bryan at the State Department, so Obama has hidden his predecessor and his rival in plain sight at the upper reaches of the government.
How long will Hillary subject herself to this discipline? Likely as long as Obama is popular. Should his ratings fade, she might move away from the president and could even consider a primary contest against him in 2012. But while he is on top of his game, she’ll stay loyal.
But she is shrinking by the day. Once Obama’s equal — and before that his superior — she now looks tiny compared to the president. She doesn’t look like a president in waiting; she’s more like a senior staff member hoping to rise in the bureaucracy. No longer at the head of a movement or the symbol of rising women all over the world, she has faded into the State Department woodwork. She is much less visible than her predecessors Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, James Baker, Madeleine Albright or Condi Rice. She is even less in the public eye than was Al Haig during his one-year tenure. One has to go back to the likes of Warren Christopher or William Rogers to find a secretary of State as far down the totem poll. This diminished status has got to grate on her and on him. But they are trapped in Obama’s web and cannot easily escape.

Supreme Court Justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor understands how difficult it is for a woman to decide whether to have an abortion and she knows women who have struggled with that choice, a longtime friend told the Daily News.
“Years ago, we spoke about abortion, about how difficult a choice it is,” Dawn Cardi, a lawyer and one of Sotomayor’s closest friends, told the News Friday.
“It’s a very, very difficult choice, and (we discussed) how difficult it must be for a woman who has to make that choice,” Cardi recalled. “It’s not a cavalier decision under any circumstances, and we understand that.”
Asked directly if Sotomayor believes a woman has a right to choose an abortion, Cardi replied, “She will follow what she thinks is the law on that, and her personal beliefs will not interfere with that analysis because my view of her is that she does not allow her personal beliefs to interfere with her analysis of legal issues.”

As per usual, me and colleagues spend time trying to sort out all of the problems of the world in the little gaps of free time we have between the shit we do for a living… and the thing we all, in our diverse viewpoints agree on, is the Bill of Rights, and Constitutional rule of law and separation of powers and a few other things, but what we all completely agree on, is that we will not get there, without sweeping reform of Campaign Finance.
Until we make all State and Federal Elections subject to limits of finance, to that ONLY from public trust money, divided equally amongst the candidates who are only allowed on the ballot by signatures, with, always, the write-in option on every ballot. At the same time, there should be granular restrictions on the funding for signature gathering and paid “volunteers” and election workers who collect them. The number, and funding of them, should be from the parties, and only in total amounts that are equal and specified by law. No outside organization should be allowed to collect signatures for a candidate to elected public office, and only public certified collectors paid for by the parties, in an amount prescribed by law.
Write in candidates campaigning will also fall under strict guidelines, much as the Party candidate should.
Every dollar spent, on everything the parties do, should be regulated, and restricted. Enough is enough. We are losing to the billionaires’ agendas. We The People, have nothing anymore. When we all wake up to that fact, we can get something done about it.

…Gallup is correct that only three other post-WWII Presidents elected to their first terms have had higher approval ratings in May. But besides Obama, Ike, Kennedy and Reagan, there have been only five Presidents elected to their first terms since WWII. One (Carter) had the exact same approval rating as Obama, and two had marginally lower ratings (Nixon at 63%, GHW Bush at 60%) and two had significantly lower ratings (Dubya at 55% and Clinton at 45%). What we really have are two Presidents with sky-high approval ratings, two Presidents with mediocre-to-poor approval ratings, and four Presidents with approval ratings comparable to Obama’s. An equally valid interpretation of Gallup’s data is “Obama’s May Approval Ratings: Middle of the Pack.”

I cannot not stand Dick Morris, and he really is as much to blame for us having O’Burka as POTUS as the DNC. He refused to expose anything negative about Obama until he was sure Hillary was out of the race, he even mentioned wanting to keep things quite until Hillary was out on Fox News. But his plan to see John McCain, who he was sure would beat Obama, win the election back fired. And now he probably realizes that it was Hillary who could have beaten Obama.
All that said I have to agree with what Dick Face says lately. I think the Clitons made a terrible mistake. They new John McCain was a much better candidate and that Obama is a total fraud. I think it made Bill Clinton physically ill to undermine McCains candidacy. The Clintons deeply respected McCain but ultimately played party politics not realizing that to many of us, they are the democratic party-screw the rest of them!
I am so sad to see Hillary Clinton as part of this toxic administration and President Clinton’s ability to raise money seriously restricted. Obama is a fraud, a liar and the most incompetent president our nation has ever seen, but he is the shrewdest of politicians. I think the Clintons are screwed unless they wait until the right time, as Dick Morris mentioned, and turn against Obama. I pray for that day, when all will be forgiven.

In November 2007, Obama came out against a bill that would have reformed the notorious Mining Law of 1872. The current statute, signed into law by Ulysses Grant, allows mining companies to pay a nominal fee, as little as $2.50 an acre, to mine for hardrock minerals like gold, silver, and copper without paying royalties. Yearly profits for mining hardrock on public lands is estimated to be in excess of $1 billion a year according to Earthworks, a group that monitors the industry. Not surprisingly, the industry spends freely when it comes to lobbying: an estimated $60 million between 1998-2004 according to The Center on Public Integrity. And it appears to be paying off, yet again.
The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 would have finally overhauled the law and allowed American taxpayers to reap part of the royalties (4 percent of gross revenue on existing mining operations and 8 percent on new ones). The bill provided a revenue source to cleanup abandoned hardrock mines, which is likely to cost taxpayers over $50 million, and addressed health and safety concerns in the 11 affected western states.
Later it came to light that one of Obama’s key advisors in Nevada is a Nevada-based lobbyist in the employ of various mining companies (CBS News “Obama’s Position On Mining Law Questioned. Democrat Shares Position with Mining Executives Who Employ Lobbyist Advising Him,” November 14, 2007).

Al-Anzi had previously been convicted of sodomy and owning pornographic films, a crime in conservative Saudi Arabia.
Crucifying the headless body in a public place is a way to set an example, according to the kingdom’s strict interpretation of Islam. Normally those convicted of rape, murder and drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia are just beheaded.
London-based rights group Amnesty International criticized al-Anzi’s execution and crucifixion.
“It is horrific that beheading and crucifixions still happen,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui of Amnesty International in a statement Friday.
