(((Murphy))) – sorry, I missed your hello to me downstairs; I went off to help my husband with a computer problem and when I came back I got caught up in another conversation.
catsden 05.05.09 at 11:52 pm
I made a small donation, Murphy; things are tight here right now. Sorry I can’t do more.
catsden 05.05.09 at 11:53 pm
Okay, I’m going to go back down and tell them again that the conversation has moved up here. BRB

I have come back after waiting to hear what MK and PumaBear had to say, but the truth is Dances is right I get up very early. My Aussies think I should be up by 5:30 and do their best to ignore my attempts to fall back to sleep. Dances is correct that if there a piece of pie, I will definitely eat it for breakfast. Usually though my son gets to it all before the night is over.
And now that I have used up another entry, I am going off to read a little before I go to sleep. Good night PUMAs one and all.
Ronan 05.06.09 at 12:10 am

YES!! Angela Davis. I missed it the last 200 times Casper made me watch that video.
I have negatives of Angela Davis from the late 60s.
She gave a talk… 100 or so of us were there… hippie / lesbian/feminists, or thesbian/leminists, as we liked to call ourselves. Us and three men dispersed through the auditorium …white males, crew cuts, suits, and tan trenchcoats! They really blended in. LOL
MKfromLA 05.06.09 at 1:18 am
I saw Angela Davis speak at UCLA. Me and a couple of thousand other hippy lefties. I don’t remember what she spoke about. I do remember that she has a space between her two front teeth. All the best lefties do.

Potato Eaters… saw the van gogh show in LA.
one speck (tan) reflective light… made me cry.
Have always had a strong emotion response to art… but that show was what made me experience what people meant whenever they said a gallery show was a “spiritual experience”.
I have a habit of getting up close to see the details in paintings… that speck of light on the potato in the foreground was when I started crying.
DancesWithPumas 05.06.09 at 1:20 am
Yes! One of those sexy spaces between her teeth.

1) Known for being fair-minded and thrifty (drives old, used cars), DeFazio is practically an institution around here.
Trust me, THIS newsclip here, & what Obama said to DeFazio, bothered a LOT of Oregonians, LEFT of Center, Middle-of-the-Road voters, Independents, and Republicans…
DeFazio gets Obama jibe on stimulus vote
The Oregonian March 31, 2009 10:43AM
Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio’s vote against the economic stimulus bill – he was just one of seven House Democrats to vote against it – is continuing to define him in Washington, D.C. First there were rumors, which DeFazio insisted were bogus, that his vote put him on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s bad side.
Now, in a meeting Monday evening with about 150 House Democrats, President Barack Obama joked about the vote in a way that has Capitol Hill Kremlinologists pondering over its meaning.
According to an account DeFazio gave Associated Press, the veteran Oregon congressman told the president he wanted more infrastructure spending. Obama immediately recalled that DeFazio had the same beef about the economic stimulus bill, which led to his no vote. And then Obama quipped:
“Don’t think we’re not keeping score, brother.”
Obama’s quip was met with laughter and DeFazio is wearing it as a badge of honor, saying the president doesn’t know half the members by name – but that he certainly knows about the Oregon congressman who wants more money invested in such things as water systems, bridges and transit.

2) Krugman wants to know who is leaking info about the stress tests to the press:

This is UPDATE from CDC I received today 5/05/09
Update on Situation
The ongoing outbreak of novel influenza A (H1N1) continues to expand in the United States and internationally. CDC expects that more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths from this outbreak will occur over the coming days and weeks.
CDC continues to take aggressive action to respond to an expanding outbreak caused by novel H1N1 flu.
CDC’s response goals are to:
1. Reduce transmission and illness severity, and
2. Provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by this emergency.
CDC is issuing updated interim guidance daily in response to the rapidly evolving situation. This includes updated interim guidance for clinicians on how to identify and care for people who are sick with novel H1N1 flu now that more widespread illness has been detected in the United States. CDC recommends that testing and antiviral treatment be prioritized for those with severe respiratory illness and those at highest risk of complications from seasonal influenza. This includes children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions and weakened immune systems, and people 65 years and older. In addition, CDC has provided information for the public on what to do if they develop flu-like symptoms.
CDC has completed deployment of 25 percent of the supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to all states in the continental United States. These supplies and medicines will help states and U.S. territories respond to the outbreak. In addition, the Federal Government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against the novel H1N1 flu virus.
Response actions are aggressive, but they may vary across states and communities depending on local circumstances. Communities, businesses, places of worship, schools and individuals can all take action to slow the spread of this outbreak. People who are sick are urged to stay home from work or school and to avoid contact with others, except to seek medical care. This action can avoid spreading illness further.
U.S. Human Cases of H1N1 Flu Infection
As of 11:00 AM ET on May 5, 2009, CDC has confirmed 403 human cases and 1 death in 38 states:
Alabama: 4
Arizona: 17
California: 49
Colorado: 6

Asian4Hillary,
Thank you for the update. I just checked Dept of health reports for where I live and we now have 6 confirmed cases and 6 unconfirmed.
Delle 05.06.09 at 6:08 am
I’ve heard about this before, but didn’t believe it.
It sounded much too far-fetched.
Now there are more news sites reporting on it.
So, I am beginning to think it’s true.
And I am getting mighty scared!

So I was following he puma/hillbuzz discussion last night and I was trying desperately to come up with something ridiculous to to throw everyone off track when the conversation crossed the line from thoughtful intellectual debate to hateful personal attacks , and guess what ? I never posted ! Instead of posting , I ended up clapping and praising my computer screen “YES ! That’s the way to have a conversation , pumas ! ”
Although , considering those involved in the discussion , I expected no less than the clear expression of beliefs – the AMAZING introspection and self analysis wrought by the conversation was , however, just the icing on the cake !
In other words – a big thank you to all of the pumas who participated in that discussion – I went to bed happy and very proud to be an itty bitty part of such an amazing group . (even though I did not participate I may get some ’smart by association ‘ points .

Is it weird TT? Was it simply that the pandemic has slowed that caused the media to suddenly shut down its coverage?

no
but it might just scare away the census employee taking GPS coords of your front door.
i say go for it.
TexasTigress 05.06.09 at 9:38 am
Murphy – has it slowed ????? or has the media just not reported on it ?
Virtually EVERYONE here is sick – some of my clients are VERY ill – most have no insurance .
I don’t think it has been as deadly as was expected , but it hasn’t slowed here at all – just the opposite . Hospitals and clinics and dr’s offices are overwhelmed …
Thankfully , there are no confirmed deaths here – but that whole ‘confirmed ‘ thing bugs me …
Zee 05.06.09 at 9:41 am
I wouldn’t put too much stock in World Nut Daily, Delle….this big brother crap way preceded Zerobama. There are cameras everywhere…put up during the Bush era. Washington D.C. in particular. And why stop at the government? You can go online and get a picture, both satellite and street level of your own house. It’s creepy, all right, and of course the government’s going to use it, but they’ve been collecting info on us for a long time.
MKfromLA 05.06.09 at 9:42 am
#85 Delle -
World Net Daily is has a particular bias in what you see there. Agenda-driven is what I’d call it.
You can find out more about WND here -

Good morning Murphy, Snail mail on its way.
Mimi, I sent you an e-mail, awaiting your address. I’m an old- fashion kind of girl.
TexasTigress 05.06.09 at 9:46 am
Maybe it has slowed – I am becoming more and more convinced that I live in the Twilight Zone anyway …..
Zee 05.06.09 at 9:48 am
Anyway, I collected some fun links…
TN Guerilla women (linked on the blogroll) has a hilarious post up. Apparently, Mittwit Romney made a sexist diminishing remark about Sarah Palin, and her supporters got him back with a brilliant response video.
Also, there is a fabulous article on Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who is calling on Zero to appoint another woman to the Supreme Court:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/judicial/2009-05-05-ruthginsburg_N.htm
And finally….wow…we need this PUMA’s blog to be added to the PUMA blogroll!
http://donnadarko.wordpress.com/
Her current post is about the single payer health, but check out her April posts…she was on a major tear!
Zee 05.06.09 at 9:49 am
TexasTigress…I would trust local news sources more than any other. So, whatever your papers/stations are reporting!

Hello. I must be going.
Delle 05.06.09 at 9:56 am
Thanks #95 and #96
I don’t usually take seriously anything I read on World Net Daily.
In fact, I hardly read it at all.
This time the story disturbed me because I’ve seen it reported on several other sites.
I suppose this administration has made a nervous wreck out of me.
I never know what to expect, or what to believe.
Gotta Calm Down.
Delle
Zee 05.06.09 at 9:59 am
Delle, we’re going to need to revisit our right to privacy in this entire era. Maybe we can request to be on a “no show” list, the way we’ve got “no call” lists.
I doubt it, tho. All these online map companies have hired people to photograph every street. The picture of my house includes a vintage car I no longer own…so weird.
persephone 05.06.09 at 10:00 am

WND is a nuthouse-but the article about the census workers taking GPS coordinates is true.
They came and did my front door, paying no mind to the fact that this is private property and the official census is supposed to be next year.
WND is not the only site covering this.
Zee 05.06.09 at 10:02 am
Here’s the link to the Sarah Palin video….you have to suffer thru Chris Matthew’s ugly mug, but it gives the entire context, which makes it funnier.

In my town if you don’t return the census forms you get dropped from the voter registration rolls.
Not sure if this is MA or local law-do you know?
TexasTigress 05.06.09 at 10:04 am
I’m not going to WND , but I have a friend who is working for the census and her job is to take the gps coordinates . She said it was for the ‘pre-census ‘ .
Don’t know if this is what you all are talking about but ….
Zee 05.06.09 at 10:05 am
They came to my front door, too….I didn’t answer. I then watched them go down the street. They did have some handheld device. I was baffled because I thought it was supposed to be next year, too…
Zee 05.06.09 at 10:08 am

tt #101, no I was AGREEING with you — sorry that was a tortured comment (I waterboarded it) .
I dont think it’s slowed — I think the COVERAGE of it has slowed.
wrt privacy – my daughter showed me a picture of our front door on Google earth the other day, right up to the doorknob. very creepy.
oth, I think our 20th century idea of privacy has become quaint.
at the doctor’s the other day I actually signed up to their HealthNet so I can access my records online and email directly with the office or with a doctor/nurse.
I actually think it’s quite an amazing improvement. I *DO* worry about the possible abuses but am unable to envision how we could ever get that cat back in the bag.
I honestly think the computerization of medical records holds out amazing promise for BETTER health care delivery, not simply more efficient. If I’m not mistaken it was W who enacted the first round of computerized records.
For example, with medical records online, the CDC and local public health officials and hospitals could track in REAL TIME the swine flu pandemic. They would have clinical information instantaneously about who is sick and where.
I guess one way I would feel safer about the records being online is if quality health care was GUARANTEED to all American citizens regardless of income or health. That would make us all less vulnerable. Computerized health records and universal health care are win-win together.

Yes, they are calling the GPS data collection a “pre-census” whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean.
So far I have seen no good explanation by anyone as to why this is necessary.
It’s a huge expense to taxpayers, for something that is being done for no reason in particular, or no reason that we’re being let in on.
(All that money -millions- could have been put to a better use-health care, distressed homeowners, NOT reducing SS payments, fuel assistance..glad to see the first 100 days has it’s priorities with Big Brother activities and NYC flyover pics that are now classified.)
The World Nut article says that census workers are trained to say that interfering with the *census* is a crime..WTF!!

So many docs (many here in MA) have argued quite convincingly that putting medical records online will not mean better care.
Computerized records (all of a patient’s providers have access) and internet
records (the whole world now has access) are not the same.

“Tide may be turning in favor of domestic partner benefits
By Alyssa Rosenberg arosenberg@govexec.com May 5, 2009 Five years ago this March, Michelle Schohn joined the Foreign Service.
Diplomacy wasn’t her initial field of choice; she already had a job as an archaeologist. But there was one very significant factor influencing her decision to change careers. Schohn’s partner, Mary Glantz, already was a member of the Foreign Service. And when Glantz was posted overseas, things got complicated. The State Department classifies the spouses of gay and lesbian employees as “members of household,” according them different benefits than heterosexual couples who are legally married.
Members of household are not eligible to participate in special early-round applications for jobs at embassies, as heterosexual spouses can. They cannot be covered by their partners’ health insurance, so they are not guaranteed coverage when they go overseas. They do not have access to diplomatic posts’ medical facilities. And if posts have to be evacuated, members of household are not guaranteed evacuation pay or subsidies to cover expenses.”

Yeah, the faux outrage is a time-honored tactic. Not as regards to Fox specifically, but to all women’s issues. Take the Taliban/burqa issue. Only when it suits certain interests do the talking heads care that women are draped and oppressed. When they want to start a war, suddenly they notice the women aren’t free and they need to better their lives. Now, suddenly, human rights aren’t a priority any more. (The Washington Post had an article on this yesterday. Obama’s “human rights are an ideal, but not a priority” is now a directive, and being parroted all through his administration.)

I remember her. The barbarian she had the misfortune of marrying shot her in the face and left her for dead. When the police arrived, it was ‘obvious’ to them that she was dead. Sen. Chuck Grassley was on Washington Journal today and in answer to a caller’s question about cutting Social Security cost of loving raises, he said no way is that going to happen because Congress is scared to death of the senior vote and will intervene if the cost of living does not equal 3%. Yes, I know he is a repuke, but that is what he said. Just wanted to reassure anyone who is worried because they’re hearing that seniors’ benefits will be cut. This is just want I heard, do not attack me to disagree.

There was a woman in a bookclub I belonged to, who had to read a book in one sitting. If hse didn’t complete the book, she had to start at the beginning again. Democrats Wallow in a ‘Culture of Corruption’
By Jonah Goldberg
Some days you have to ask yourself, my God, what if these people were Republicans?
Democrats took back Congress in 2006 and the presidency in 2008 in no small part because of their ability to bang their spoons on their high chairs about what they called the Republican “culture of corruption.” Their choreographed outrage was coordinated with the precision of a North Korean missile launch pageant. And, to be fair, they had a point. The GOP did have its legitimate embarrassments. California Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham and lobbyist Jack Abramoff were fair game, and so was Rep. Mark Foley, the twisted Florida congressman who allegedly wanted male congressional pages cleaned and perfumed and brought to his tent, as it were.

I’m afraid that this frightening subject (GPS) has taken over my mind this morning.
Allow me to ask one more question and then I’ll let it go.
Zee #135 or anyone else who has experienced this intrusion – if a person punchs info into his/her hand and does not attach a device – why then does this person need to knock on your door or ring the bell?
For what reason is the home owner’s approval necessary in this engagement?
Thanks.
And I promise I’ll give up on the subject after this.
Delle
Zee 05.06.09 at 11:35 am
Delle….good question!
And one I might’ve been able to answer if I’d opened the door!

DancesWithPumas 05.06.09 at 11:42 am
Delle
Maybe they knock so the residents don’t call the police for suspicious persons on their property, or so they don’t surprise a resident and end up shot?
murphy 05.06.09 at 11:46 am
hang on Delle!
not sure if anyone answered your question.
GPS means Global Positioning Satellite.
There have been satellites up in space looking down at the earth for YEARS now. They track the weather, look for earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. They also are used by media companies to connect reporters in remote places like Afghanistan to the TV, radio, and telephone.
They’re also used for spy purposes by our own and various other governments.
Some of the satellites are privately owned (by media companies) and since the advent of cell phones and laptops these satellite companies have “rented out” use of their satellites for commercial ventures. Such as Google Maps or the navigational devices like Garmin that so many people now have in their cars.
Like most technology, the benefits and new possibilities that are made possible are really really great and nifty, BUT there are also downsides and potential abuses, like privacy intrusion.
I guess we’re all sort of worrying about police states and it’s true that technology now makes the SCOPE and SIZE of a police state truly frightening to imagine. In the past, tyrants and police state governments were very limited by the size of their armies and the number and proliferation of their human agents out in the society.
What we face now is an AUTOMATION of the Police State.
spooky, but don’t fret.
we’re still free HERE!
Hiya Big Brother!!
