Yesterday the House passed H.R. 1913, a renewal of the Hate Crime Bill, 234-190. Not one Republican voted in favor. In fact, Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina said it was a “hoax” that Matthew Shepherd was killed because he was gay. Of interest is that this version of the bill greatly expands the coverage of WHO is protected by the legislation.

(A) IN GENERAL- Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law, in any circumstance described in subparagraph (B), willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of any person ”

That means women are now covered by hate crime legislation.  Or we will be once the bill passes the Senate, where it is being shepherded by Ted Kennedy and Olympia Snowe. This is very good news.

Danceswithpumas linked to THIS article by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times where he writes about the travesty of indifference regarding rape evidence:

“. . . a 43-year-old legal secretary who was raped repeatedly in her home in Los Angeles as her son slept in another room. The attacker forced the woman to clean herself in an attempt to destroy the evidence.

Tim Marcia, the detective on the case, thought this meant that the perpetrator was a habitual offender who would strike again. Mr. Marcia rushed the rape kit to the crime lab but was told to expect a delay of more than one year.

So Mr. Marcia personally drove the kit 350 miles to deliver it to the state lab in Sacramento. Even there, the backlog resulted in a four-month delay — but then it produced a “cold hit,” a match in a database of the DNA of previous offenders.

Yet in the months while the rape kit sat on a shelf, the suspect had allegedly struck twice more. Police said he broke into the homes of a pregnant woman and a 17-year-old girl, sexually assaulting each of them.”

So, if prosecutors and local law enforcement can’t be bothered to process physical evidence that would stop repeat rapists in their tracks, will they be bothered to try to add additional Hate Crime penalties in their charges against the rapists they DO catch? Seems to me that rape “causes bodily injury to a person because of the actual or perceived gender” of the victim. But that may be too radical for some to comprehend.

By the way, did you know you can read the summary, full text, amendments, and debate schedule for ALL bills before Congress at several locations on the web? Yep — you can and you should.

  • Thomas is a site run by the Library of Congress (named in honor of the spirit of Thomas Jefferson). Everything you want to know about Congress, including daily schedules, is right HERE.
  • Open Congress is another excellent site. You can sign up for email updates and alerts. They even have a blog!
  • The Green Papers collects information about laws, elections, polls, and every other political thing under the sun. Completely non-partisan.
  • And Open Secrets is worth its weight in gold. They keep track of EVERY SINGLE campaign donation and dollar raised by candidates, elected officials, and political action committees. They present data by industry, by state, by donor, by party — every which way. You can look up who the richest members of Congress are and which industries donated the most soft and hard money to campaigns.

I warn you though — browsing through these sites can become addictive!

Chrysler is filing for bankruptcy, which we’ve been expecting since yesterday. The bond holders and other mega-millionaires won their game of chicken with Timmy and called the government’s bluff. Seems they’d rather let tens of thousands of American auto workers lose their jobs than agree to taking less money from the company.

And on top of that, 631,000 more Americans lost their jobs last week.

Apparently TOTUS gave a speech or a press conference or something last night.

Righteous Gary and Pat Johnson have the best take I’ve read so far on the Specter Spectacle.

And because there’s only so much bad news that is decent to consume without some good news to leaven it, read THIS by Annabelle. Glimmers of hope.

just read this over at Calculated Risk in comments:

It’s long so scroll by if you’re not interested in economic stuff but I love this guy’s rant:

“yesterday, after repeatedly hearing everywhere the trumpeting that “expectations are beaten”, i went on a hunt for these earnings.
well, there really is no PE on the S&P 500 because the earnings are negative.
NEGATIVE.
With 92% of all S&P 500 companies reporting, the earnings are a -$11.82 according to Standard & Poor’s.

barf, just barf.

unemployment is still rising.

all the fake news is going to undermine what little credibility the media and the government have left. it is irresponsible and damaging for our media and our government to continue hiding from reality!

Watch Rep. Virginia Foxx spread her right-wingnut propaganda! Sadly, it seems Judy Shepard, Matthew’s mother, was in the gallery when Foxx spewed her hate-speech and had to hear that her son’s death was a “hoax”.

Murphy: I was not here last night obviously or you would have heard from me re the discussion and have just gotten here and have not reviewed all of that..but I do want to Thank you for posting the video of Buffy…for me and Delle.

1966..I was 20…and she was maybe that as well? In any case..as her biography on her website indicates..she has continued to expand her attention…One human..One woman…

Now is not then…in this country..It is far worse…yet her lyrics to this song..seem still so familiar..and relevant.

My point? No one is pure in this world and for that reason each to each her own reflection to clean up personal spiritual and intellectual “viruses” …each to each inside reflection…to choose what and how to speak and ACT…but ACT we must and not simply on this Internet…

I am avoiding work this morning – big time.

My question is this. Why the fuck do we even have to have a HATE crime bill? Aren’t most crimes done out of some kind of hatred? I guess this is one step towards changing attitudes.

I remember a woman in WVA or VA being kidnapped, raped, etc (she was black – the guys white) and they didn’t charge them with a hate crime because it would have given them less time.

9

Delle 04.30.09 at 10:44 am

Murphy – downstairs
‘I was going to post that one Delle — but wanted to post your recommendation first! yep — that’s a tear jerker — I believe she is singing with Pete Seeger in that video right?’

Thank you so much.

Yes, Buffy is singing with Pete Seeger. He is good; been writing since the 30′s I believe.

Don’t let me get started on that period of folk/protest music because I could go on forever.

Let me say that I also enjoyed Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, Dylan and especially Phil Ochs.

Phil Ochs was a troubled man. Once the protest music began fading from popularity, he changed his name, attempted to make a new start, eventually committed suicide.

We should, however, enjoy his music and listen to his words. They are an important comment about our society at that time.

To increase the penalties for crimes such as Matthew Shepard’s murder that target certain individuals.

In this case, the girlfriends of the two men who killed Shepard testified that both of them said they were going to “get a gay guy” earlier on the evening of the attack.

It is one thing to hate a group, but quite another to hunt down individuals in that group on which to take out ones sadistic revenge.

Good morning cousin fish — good morning everyone.

Well, in Matthew Shepherd’s case I applaud the Judge for not letting the defense come up with some “twinkie” defense. The death penalty was on the table and Mrs. Shepherd pleaded her statement for the murders to get life in prison with no parole.

All I am saying — I can’t wait for the day where everyone is treated equally. The evidence / facts are looked at. The day you don’t have to have laws to protect everyone. The Constitution should already do that.

Like Affirmative Action — I think it was a good thing back in it’s day. It accomplished a lot. I think now we can set it aside. I look around me at work and I see plenty of women / people of color. Do we really still need it? I have no hard evidence. Just my observations.

So – maybe we need the Hate Crime Bill. Sometimes I can argue both sides of a case – drives me crazy.

Dems to Specter: Don’t cut in line
By MANU RAJU | 4/30/09 4:03 AM EDT

Here comes the hangover.

Just a day after celebrating Arlen Specter’s defection from the GOP, Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday were bracing for a war with both their newest colleague and their majority leader.

In the course of courting Specter, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid promised the Pennsylvania Republican that he’d retain his seniority if he switched to the Democratic Party. According to Senate customs, that would let Specter — with 29 years in the Senate — leapfrog most of the Democrats on the Appropriations Committee.

The response from Appropriations Committee member Tom Harkin (D-Iowa): Over my dead body.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as “swine flu” technically is not swine flu. It is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that derives from one strain of human influenza, one strain of avian influenza, and two separate strains of swine influenza. The origins of this new strain are unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in swine.[3] It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation.[4] The strain in most cases causes only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a full recovery without requiring medical attention and without the use of antiviral medicines.[5]

23

antifish 04.30.09 at 11:18 am

Biden says avoid planes, subways; puts out clarifying statement
Amie Parnes, Carol E. Lee Amie Parnes, Carol E. Lee – 2 hrs 13 mins ago

“Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would not recommend taking any commercial flight or riding in a subway car “at this point” because swine flu virus can spread “in confined places.” A little more than one hour later, Biden rushed out a statement backing off.
———
…That contradicted more restrained advice from President Barack Obama and the federal government — and the last thing the White House wants to do right now is shut down the airline industry and big-city subways out of mass panic.

…The White House quickly arranged for Biden to make this statement through a spokesperson.”

Americans aren’t told to limit air travel during *regular normal* flu season

Airplanes are germ incubators year round.

RFK Jr. endorses Gillibrand
By BEN SMITH | 4/29/09 4:42 AM EDT

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a key supporter for a senator whose problems are on her left and who some thought would draw formidable Kennedy enemies — has given a big endorsement to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

“Kirsten has always been an environmental champion,” Kennedy said in an e-mail endorsement. “She has long been a leading supporter of producing renewable energy and creating ‘green jobs’ to service the industry. If we’re going to finally get serious about climate change and about rebuilding this country, we need Kirsten to keep her spot on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.”

Gillibrand, who replaced Sen. Hillary Clinton when Clinton was confirmed as secretary of state, faces potential challenges in the 2010 Democratic primary from New York Reps. Steve Israel and Carolyn Maloney.

Surveillance Effort Draws Civil Liberties Concern

LOS ANGELES — A growing number of big-city police departments and other law enforcement agencies across the country are embracing a new system to report suspicious activities that officials say could uncover terrorism plots but that civil liberties groups contend might violate individual rights.

Here and in nearly a dozen other cities, including Boston, Chicago and Miami, officers are filling out terror tip sheets if they run across activities in their routines that seem out of place, like someone buying police or firefighter uniforms, taking pictures of a power plant or espousing extremist views.

Ultimately, state and federal officials intend to have a nationwide reporting system in place by 2014, using a standardized system of codes for suspicious behaviors. It is the most ambitious effort since the Sept. 11 attacks to put in place a network of databases to comb for clues that might foretell acts of terrorism.

Just Taking Pictures? Tell It to the Judge

But the American Civil Liberties Union and other rights groups warn that the program pioneered by the Los Angeles Police Department raises serious privacy and civil liberties concerns.

“The behaviors identified by L.A.P.D. are so commonplace and ordinary that the monitoring or reporting of them is scarcely any less absurd,” the A.C.L.U. said in a report last July.

“This overbroad reporting authority,” the report adds, “gives law enforcement officers justification to harass practically anyone they choose, to collect personal information and to pass such information along to the intelligence community.”

The Iraq We Leave Behind

by Kelley B. Vlahos, April 30, 2009

For years, a majority of Iraqis have just wanted the Americans to leave.

As of June 30, urban Iraqis will likely get their wish. But let’s step back for a moment and think about why some Iraqis, particularly in the Sunni areas, may be having second thoughts, and why others, their lives blistered over with varying degrees of dismal circumstances, are too depleted to engage in the hearty sendoff they’ve always dreamed of.

Plain accounting principle, you cannot spend your way out of debt. Next year we would be paying $892 BILLIONS in INTEREST ALONE for our deficit. Our deficit is growing $1 BILLION per HOUR, you can do your computation. Think how much revenue the federal government is collecting ANNUALLY from taxpayers and think how much interest we have to pay for those debts. Doesn’t look promising, isn’t it? But this item of the flu raises for me the same old questions about certain realities re Mexico I have had for years ..What has Mexico done for its people..especially these poor souls..? Invited huge agribusiness and other firms in where they can avoid the few or nonexistenct environmental and health proscriptions on the books here (but rarely enforced over several recent administrations) and in Mexico as in other poorer countries not there? And we..what have we done in our so called trade agreements with Mexico? Improved the standards? Hell no…
While I reject illegal immigration…have no doubt..that were I a poor Mexican I would attempt passage until it worked.
Neither this country nor Mexico has its people ..the everyday ones ..as many here are…as priority and under this no count Fraud that as we know will not change.

GOP set to launch rebranding effort

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Coming soon to a battleground state near you: a new effort to revive the image of the Republican Party and to counter President Obama’s characterization of Republicans as “the party of ‘no.’”

CNN has learned that the new initiative, called the National Council for a New America, will be announced Thursday.

It will involve an outreach by an interesting mix of GOP officials, ranging from 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain to Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and the younger brother of the man many Republicans blame for the party’s battered brand: former President George W. Bush.

In addition to Sen. McCain and Gov. Bush, GOP sources familiar with the plans tell CNN others involved in the new group’s “National Panel Of Experts” will include:

*Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former national GOP chairman
*Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal
*Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney

“However, this is not a Republican-only forum,” reads the letter announcing the new effort, a copy of which was obtained by CNN from Republican sources involved in the effort. “While we will be guided by our principles of freedom and security, we will seek to include more than just our ideas.

“This forum will include a wide open policy debate that every American can feel free to participate in,” the announcement letter reads.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/04/29/gop-set-to-launch-rebranding-effort/

Just heard on TV that this old time motley group without ears could not get in touch with Sarah. However, if this group supports term limits, I will join in, but that is not likely to happen. I would join with any group that supports term limits.

Most of these leaders support amnesty. I think most Republicans do not and I don’t think it is likely that any of them will change their minds on this no matter what the “people” who participate in their forums want.

And, any of the congressional leaders who are part of this new group probably would have voted for the $3.4 trillion budget if a Republican was president although zero Republicans voted for it yesterday along with 17 democrats.

Kansas State Researcher Finds That the 1918 Spanish Flu Virus Can Infect Swine and Resulted in Current Lineage of H1N1 Swine Influenza Viruses

MANHATTAN, Kan., April 30 (AScribe Newswire) — In 1918 a human influenza virus known as the Spanish flu spread through the central United States while a swine respiratory disease occurred concurrently. A Kansas State University researcher has found that the virus causing the pandemic was able to infect and replicate in pigs, but did not kill them, unlike in other mammalian hosts like monkeys, mice and ferrets where the infection has been lethal.

*HOW TO EXPLAIN THE STIMULUS BILL*.

Shortly after class, an economics student approaches his economics professor and says, “I don’t understand this stimulus bill. Can you explain it to me?”

The professor replied, “I don’t have any time to explain it at my office, but if you come over to my house on Saturday and help me with my weekend project, I’ll be glad to explain it to you.” The student agreed.

At the agreed-upon time, the student showed up at the professor’s house. The professor stated that the weekend project involved his backyard pool.

They both went out back to the pool, and the professor handed the student a bucket. Demonstrating with his own bucket, the professor said, “First, go over to the deep end, and fill your bucket with as much water as you can.”

The student did as he was instructed. The professor then continued, “Follow me over to the shallow end, and then dump all the water from your bucket into it.” The student was naturally confused, but did as he was told.

The professor then explained they were going to do this many more times, and began walking back to the deep end of the pool.

The confused student asked, “Excuse me, but why are we doing this?”

The professor matter-of-factly stated that he was trying to make the shallow end much deeper.

The student didn’t think the economics professor was serious, but figured that he would find out the real story soon enough.

However, after the 6th trip between the shallow end and the deep end, the student began to become worried that his economics professor had gone mad. The student finally replied, “All we’re doing is wasting valuable time and effort on unproductive pursuits. Even worse, when this process is all over, everything will be at the same level it was before, so all you’ll really have accomplished is the destruction of what could have been truly productive action!”

The professor put down his bucket and replied with a smile, “Congratulations. You now understand the stimulus bill.”

The woman definitely said “the military came in around April 1 and gave them medicine for their fevers” she did not say how she knew they were military or what military it was, I am assuming they were in uniform and it was the Mexico millitary.
She said their fevers went away and they felt better for about 2 weeks and then the fevers came back but no one came to give them more medicine.

BillieJo 04.30.09 at 1:43 pm

Holy Shit!!! Here is an article on a possible connection to the beginning of the swine flu in Mexico and a pork processing plant:

A few tidbits..

A La Gloria resident who spoke to the Guardian on condition of anonymity yesterday described how illness swept through the village. “Some people started getting ill in February and an eight-month-old baby died,” she said. “After that another baby died on 21 March. Suddenly most of the village got ill. It was weekend and the tiny clinic here was closed. The state health authorities then did send doctors and nurses to look after us, and give us medication. About 60% of the village were ill and we asked them what it was and they said it was a severe and atypical cold. We talked about influenza and they said that was impossible, that influenza had been eradicated from Mexico.”

(snip…)

The world’s biggest pig meat producer, Virginia-based Smithfield, said it is co-operating with the Mexican authorities’ attempts to locate the possible source of the outbreak and will submit samples from its herds at its Granjas Carroll subsidiary to the University of Mexico for tests.

(snip…)

The statement came after Mexico’s national public health authority, the Mexican social security institute, raised concerns that waste from the Granjas Carrol facility may be responsible for the outbreak of illness, according to local media.

“According to state agents of the Mexican social security institute, the vector of this outbreak are the clouds of flies that come out of the hog barns, and the waste lagoons into which the Mexican-US company spews tons of excrement,” reported Mexico City newspaper La Jornada.

Swine flu can be caught through contact with infected animals, but it is unclear if contact with flies or excrement has the same effect.

……

Smithfield, which is led by pork baron Joseph W Luter III, has previously been fined for environmental damage in the US. In October 2000 the supreme court upheld a $12.6m (£8.6m) fine levied by the US environmental protection agency which found that the company had violated its pollution permits in the Pagan River in Virginia which runs towards Chesapeake Bay. The company faced accusations that faecal and other bodily waste from slaughtered pigs had been dumped directly into the river since the 1970s .

Organic Consumers Association Links Swine Flu to Factory Farms: Demands Closings

In light of news reports that the swine flu outbreak may have begun in La Gloria, a town in Veracruz, Mexico, near a cluster of factory farms co-owned by Smithfield Foods, the Organic Consumers Association and its Mexican counterpart, Via Organica, want Smithfield’s North American operations shut down until their lagoons of pig feces — where viruses can reside for 3 to 6 months — are tested and there is a plan for dealing with infected waste. The Associated Press reported today that a farm manager at Granjas Carroll de Mexico, Smithfield’s Veracruz partner, said no one from the government has inspected his farm (18 warehouses holding 15,000 of Granjas Carrol’s 950,000 hogs) for swine flu.

(NaturalNews) Perhaps due to the genetic makeup of the fast-spreading H1N1 strain of influenza — which includes genetic elements from bird flu, swine flu and human flu spanning three continents — there is considerable speculation that the origins of this virus are man-made.

It’s not an unreasonable question to ask: Could world governments, spooked by the prospect of radical climate change caused by over-population of the planet, have assembled a super-secret task force to engineer and distribute a super virulent strain of influenza designed to “correct” the human population (and institute global Martial Law)?

Technically, it’s possible. The U.S. military, all by itself, has the know-how to engineer and unleash such a virus. That doesn’t mean they’ve done so, however. It would be an astonishing leap into crimes against humanity to intentionally unleash such a biological weapon into the wild.

Then again, governments of the world have routinely engaged in crimes against humanity, haven’t they? The U.S., for example, dropped nuclear bombs on civilian populations in Japan. Israel rained white phosphorous on Palestinians, Hitler exterminated countless Jews, and Americans fired millions of rounds of depleted uranium rounds into targets in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unleashing a viral biological weapon in Mexico City is no great leap beyond what governments have already done to achieve their goals.

Throughout human history, virtually all the great crimes against humanity have been carried out by governments — mostly in the name of peace, prosperity and security, by the way. So let’s be clear about one thing: Governments are certainly capable of doing this if properly motivated. Let there be no question about that.

Is there any hard evidence of laboratory origins?
As of this moment, I have not personally seen any conclusive evidence of laboratory origins for this H1N1 swine flu. I am open to the possibility that new evidence may emerge in this direction, however, and I am suspicious of the genetic makeup of the virus as one possible indicator of its origins.

I am not a medical specialist in the area of infectious disease, but I have studied microbiology, genetics and a considerable amount of material on pandemics. What seems suspicious to me is the hybrid origin of the viral fragments found in H1N1 influenza. According to reports in the mainstream media (which has no reason to lie about this particular detail), this strain of influenza contains viral code fragments from:

• Human influenza
• Bird Flu from North America
• Swine flu from Europe
• Swine flu from Asia

This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some pigs with an unlikely cross-species mutation that allowed the bird to carry it again, then that bird would have had to fly to Asia and infected pigs there, and those Asian pigs then mutated the virus once again (while preserving the European swine and bird flu elements) to become human transmittable, and then a human would have had to catch that virus from the Asian pigs — in Mexico! — and spread it to others. (This isn’t the only explanation of how it could have happened, but it is one scenario that gives you an idea of the complexity of such a thing happening).

This sounds like a worthy prowl:

Organic Consumers Association and Via Organica are calling on their hundreds of thousands of members in the US and Mexico to contact Mexican President Calderon and his Agriculture Secretary Alberto Cardenas and US President Obama and his Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and urge them to:

-Immediately ban Confined Animal Feeding Operations (hog, beef, and chicken factory farms) across the United States and end the dangerous practice of feeding antibiotics to farm animals.

-Initiate a criminal investigation of Smithfield Foods and other major factory farms that could be a source of disease outbreaks.

Billijo,
Mexicans, many of them women working in factories, contract enviromental diseases working in plants without contrls on toxic chemicals and fibers. Many take these hazardous products home to their families.

Also the general state of water pollution has deteriorated due to poor sewage and massive unregulated chemical dumping.

It’s not surprising they might misdiagnose the problem in view of the horrible conditions evident in U.S. Maquiladores.

Regarding moderate Republicans ..from Olympia Snowe cited in an April 28..2009 article by Lisa Lerer entitled.”Two Republicans blame Conservatives.”

…”You haven’t heard warm encouraging words about how the GOP
views moderates” said Maine Sen Olympia Snow..one of the few moderate Republicans in the Senate.

Snow said the “party’s message has been..Either you’re with us or against us.”

Snow criticizrd party leadership for failing to change ist tone after Republicans lost 6 Senate seats in 2006 election.

” I happened to win with 74% of the vote in a blue collar state but no one asked me. “How did you do it.” she said.

“Seems to me that would have been the first question that would have come from the Republican Party to find out so we could avoid further losses. Ultimately we’re heading tohaving the smallest political tent in history the way things are unfolding..Snowe said.

Now is not the attitude…either you are with me or against me not that of the last year in the usurped Democraps party?
If you did not know she had said this..could this not as easily characterize Pumas and millions of others..in this country?

Are all of these millions paraiahs because they as many Democrats have been dupped? NO. ..they are Americans ..individuals …there to meet with and act with on the streets and in other ways…

Wikipedia -

Swine-flu outbreak could be linked to Smithfield factory farms

http://www.grist.org/article/2009-04-25-swine-flu-smithfield/

The outbreak of a new flu strain—a nasty mash-up of swine, avian, and human viruses—has infected 1,000 people in Mexico and the U.S., killing 68. The World Health Organization warned Saturday that the outbreak could reach global pandemic levels.

Is Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork packer and hog producer, linked to the outbreak? Smithfield operates massive hog-raising operations Perote, Mexico, in the state of Vera Cruz, where the outbreak originated. The operations, grouped under a Smithfield subsidiary called Granjas Carroll, raise 950,000 hogs per year, according to the company Web site.

On Friday, the U.S. disease-tracking blog Biosurveillance published a timeline of the outbreak containing this nugget, dated April 6 (major tip of the hat to Paula Hay, who alerted me to the Smithfield link on the Comfood listserv and has written about it on her blog, Peak Oil Entrepreneur):

Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak.

Too close to home now

My parents live on LI and I am back and forth from Fl taking care of them. I am scheduled to leave Thurs.

Their neighbour called to say he has been confirmed with swine flu. In the neighbouring towns are also 2 cases, a boy who went to prep school and a man who worked at prep school.

This neighbour believed he had allergies till he started vomiting and went to the ER. He was given Tamaflu and sent home, his 9 year old now seems ill and will go to the ER.

My parents are in their 80s last Sat I had my mom to the ER and I thought it strange in the ER they sent her saying it was more dangerous to be in th ER even though it was heart related for her.

So its right next door to 2 very elderly sick people. My dad a flu shot but they say he is not protected.

Scary shit and if they knew about this a while ago…there are no words

Relenza (zanamivir) Information

FDA has approved Relenza (zanamivir), an anti-viral drug, for persons aged 7 years and older for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza illness. This product is approved to treat type A and B influenza, the two types most responsible for flu epidemics. Clinical studies showed that for the drug to be effective, patients needed to start treatment within two days of the onset of symptoms. The drug seemed to be less effective in patients whose symptoms weren’t severe or didn’t include a fever. Relenza is approved for preventive use, to decrease the risk of developing influenza illness, for persons aged 5 and older. Relenza has not been proven effective for prevention of influenza in nursing home patients.

Relenza is a powder that is inhaled twice a day for five days from a breath-activated plastic device called a Diskhaler for treatment of influenza. For preventive use to reduce the risk of getting influenza, Relenza is inhaled once daily for 10 to 28 days as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Patients should get instruction from a health-care practitioner in the proper use of the Diskhaler, including a demonstration when possible. Relenza has not been shown to be effective, and may carry risk, in patients with severe asthma or a lung condition called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

U.S. Germ Warfare Research Pushes Treaty Limits

http://online.sfsu.edu/~rone/GEessays/germtreatylimits.html

Over the past several years, the United States has embarked on a program of secret research on biological weapons that, some officials say, tests the limits of the global treaty banning such weapons.

The 1972 treaty forbids nations from developing or acquiring weapons that spread disease, but it allows work on vaccines and other protective measures. Government officials said the secret research, which mimicked the major steps a state or terrorist would take to create a biological arsenal, was aimed at better understanding the threat.

The projects, which have not been previously disclosed, were begun under President Clinton and have been embraced by the Bush administration, which intends to expand them.

Earlier this year, administration officials said, the Pentagon drew up plans to engineer genetically a potentially more potent variant of the bacterium that causes anthrax, a deadly disease ideal for germ warfare.

The experiment has been devised to assess whether the vaccine now being given to millions of American soldiers is effective against such a superbug, which was first created by Russian scientists. A Bush administration official said the National Security Council is expected to give the final go-ahead later this month.

Two other projects completed during the Clinton administration focused on the mechanics of making germ weapons.

In a program code-named Clear Vision, the Central Intelligence Agency built and tested a model of a Soviet-designed germ bomb that agency officials feared was being sold on the international market. The C.I.A. device lacked a fuse and other parts that would make it a working bomb, intelligence officials said.

At about the same time, Pentagon experts assembled a germ factory in the Nevada desert from commercially available materials. Pentagon officials said the project demonstrated the ease with which a terrorist or rogue nation could build a plant that could produce pounds of the deadly germs.

Anna Schwartz must be the oldest active revolutionary on earth. Born in 1915 in New York, she can still be found nearly every day at her office in the National Bureau of Economic Research on Fifth Avenue, where she has been tirelessly gathering data since 1941. And as her experience proves, data can transform the world…

Inflation seems to her “unavoidable”: the Federal Reserve is creating money with little restraint, while Treasury expenditures remain far in excess of revenue. The inflation spigot is thus wide open. To beat the coming inflation, a “new Paul Volcker will be needed at the head of the Federal Reserve.”

Who listens to her these days? “I’m not a media person,” she tells me. She rarely grants interviews, which distract her from her current research: a survey of government intervention in setting foreign exchange rates between 1962 and 1985. Never before have these data been combined to show what works and what doesn’t. In her nineties, she remains a trendsetter.

Seizing the Media
Asian philosophy instructs enlightenment. But given our daily exposure to a barrage of persuasive messages, monologues, sales pitches, come-ons, and uninformative hyper-sensational news, common sense and intimacy are tough enough a struggle to maintain.
We can each see how extended exposure to television and mass media dulls people with a sense of numbness and nausea. From every public space a monologue of coercion penetrates our senses and rapes our attention. Wherever we look, wherever we listen, wherever we go: the pornography of billboards, bus side placards, subway cards, glaring storefront signs and displays, the glut of junk mail, stupid fly-by beach planes and blimps, coupons, obnoxious bumper stickers and breast pins, embarrassing service forms, plastic banners and ribbons, absurd parades, street-corner handouts, windsheild wiper flyers, matchbook ads, business cards, screaming radios, the daily papers, every nanosecond of television, the package wrapped around everything we buy—from the label in our underwear to the robot computer that calls us in our homes—only the upper atmosphere and the ocean floor offer any sanctuary from America’s ecology of coercion. At every turn the monologues drone on, imbedding the psychological mutagens that coax us to become pathetic customers and unquestioning flag wavers. At every turn we are under subtle attack.

The media serve the interests of the State and other corporations, but never the interests of the public. The media’s screen of aggression and seduction is designed to mesmerize and captivate the largest possible sector of population whose attention is then sold like scrap metal to advertisers and gang raped by their slogans, jingles, and manic images. Protected by an uncrossable media moat, agents of the State profit from war and relax behind a web of information laws, censorship powers, and vapid explanations that swat the public of detailed intelligence and mass resistance.

So long as we do not control our own government, our own state, and our own broadcast media—the mirror with which we reflect on the reality of lives—we will continue to be forced to see fun-house mirror distortions of ourselves projected onto a dumpster of products that promise to make us each desirable, sophisticated, and correct. At every turn we are under attack.

155HPBoston: The utter shock for me during the last year of campaign and machinations is that I realized corruption was far more embedded in sitting politicians than I had ever identified previously…sort of that know there are (this is gross but a good metaphor) pockets of cold and medium warm abscesses in a body and seeing them full blown..pop in front of my eyes!.

—————————-Of all the pus pockets of dems!!
Exactly…Mama Puma and I were saying the same thing at the meet up at Murphy’s..Unbelievable how destroyed we feel.
Not to mention the shock of Barbara Walters and our married Mayor having an affair………back in the day of puritanical Boston.

Deb it is a Muslim country and the small population of Christians there have pigs much to the dismay of the pig adverse Muslims. Any excuse to take property from the Christian population.

161HPBoston..back in the days of Puritanical Boston? You mean those days are gone? You mean all those “Blue Bloods” have left town? okie dokie…I definitely wish I could make a trip up there to give it a street test..by walking around very late with my “go cup” and see how long it would take to get stopped…
The nice thing? Now I could just feign age..oh I forgot I was not in New Orleans..I wonder how many times I could get away with that in one night…? I bettcha it would work more than once!
What do you think? LOL

Obama staffer sick after presidential Mexico trip
Posted: 04:12 PM ET

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A government official who traveled to Mexico City to support the delegation accompanying President Barack Obama later came down with flu-like symptoms, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday.

Testing is underway to determine if the individual — an Energy Department staffer — contracted the swine flu virus.

The H1N1 virus outbreak originated in Mexico.

The unnamed individual has since recovered.

You know, my great-grandfather died from the 1918 epidemic… leaving a generation of orphans… which happened all over because Women couldn’t manage the kids and farms, etc.

It all has an eerie ring to it with the times as they are.

There is just something peculiar about all of this… we’re already sick from who’s sitting in the WH…

…maybe that’s it… Savior is actually making us all sicker than we thought.

Although I am not Buddhist, I think something the Dali Lama said at UC Berkeley recently would apply to PUMA bloggers, especially after yesterday’s thread:

“Peace does not equal absence of problems,” he said. Peace is when, despite “disagreement and the possibility for open conflict,” people exercise restraint and will power to “seek ways to solve it” without coming to blows.

Cute photos of him too….. http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2009/04/27_dalailama.shtml

Marching band girl fights off muggers with a baton
QUARTZ HILL, Calif.
– Don’t mess with a marching band girl, especially one armed with a baton.

A 17-year-old high school marching band student beat up two assailants who tried to mug her as she walked to school in this high desert community about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

The girl punched one of the men in the nose, kicked the other in the groin and beat both with her large baton before she ran away on Friday morning, officials said

Saudi girl, 8, divorces 50-year-old husband
He paid $13,000 to father to marry her; out-of-court settlement in case
CAIRO – An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her middle-aged husband after her father forced her to marry him last year in exchange for about $13,000, her lawyer said Thursday.

Saudi Arabia has come under increasing criticism at home and abroad for permitting child marriages. The United States, a close ally of the conservative Muslim kingdom, has called child marriage a “clear and unacceptable” violation of human rights.

No big surprise here. Scanned the thread and found no sputtering and frothing about “democraps” or about how dems and rethugs are all the same.

Whistling in the dark, hm?

Next!
