It’s a glorious Sunday here in the Boston area. A great day for a walk, a picnic, or simply sitting out on the porch and watching the world go by while you pretend to read a book.
Oh, and what Cinie said:
“Just for giggles, why not? Considering the connections, motives and tactics of the players, people are just manufacturing support for their jockeying for position chess moves. While you’re being manipulated to point fingers and pick sides, what you’re really doing is playing into, or out of, the hands of somebody’s corporate agenda. For the right wing, that means build their numbers, for the left, it means love Obama. The only thing really worth considering then, is, when it’s all said and done, whose side can you live with having been on? Soros or Koch? Neither? If you are indeed on one side of the political spectrum or another, the first thing you must do is take your party back. Otherwise, it’s all just advertiser-sponsored theater.
And, the joke’s on you.”
EXCELLENT question Cinie. Which astro-turfed team do YOU want to support? If neither, welcome to Puma.* If either one or the other — get goin! Go on, get! There’s work for you to do over at Firedoglake or Malkin!
We’re tearing each other apart over extremely minor points while we ignore the epic battle being waged by forces with hundreds of millions of dollars to spend. The spoils of that epic battle are the same as they always have been, going back to the European conquistadors or the Roman legions: Gold and Slaves.
- GOLD = Money: corporate profits, government contracts, deregulation, and cronyism
- SLAVES = Voters: manipulate and propagandize as many “citizens” as possible into voting for your side’s candidates. Use social wedge issues which appeal to naive Americans’ sense of right and wrong. Gay Marriage! Abortion! Illegal Immigration! War! Taxes!
Check it out. Look at the wedge issues each party uses to manipulate us into voting for them. Each and every one is a PERFECT DIVIDER, that is, about an equal number of Americans support or oppose the issue. If 85% of Americans supported keeping our borders open or outlawing abortion in all cases, then neither party would ever talk about them again — for one side it would be preaching to the choir and for the other it would be a battle too big and quixotic to spend money on. That’s why the fanatics and idealists in the voting population are doomed to be disappointed — they will NEVER get the government to do what they want. So, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party’s commitment to wedge issues is not to SOLVE them but to KEEP THEM ALIVE so WE keep fighting with each other and demonizing our neighbors. Psst, they don’t actually CARE about fetuses or illegal immigrants — what they care about is using the fact that YOU CARE to their advantage.
Hasn’t it ever bothered you to see on TV the most liberal members of the Senate shaking hands with and hanging out with the most conservative? Hasn’t it ever sort of disturbed you to realize that the Democrats in power really, really like their powerful Republican friends? Say I’m a radical feminist, environmentalist, peace-loving liberal who believes gay marriage is a constitutional right and who really admires many aspects of Scandinavian democratic socialism. It stands to reason that I would hold religious, free-market, pro-military, pro forced pregnancy conservative homophobes in utter contempt, right? I would not meet with them, talk to them, party with them, invite them to my Christmas party or support any of their efforts in our community. In fact I’d attack them personally as crazy, stupid, corrupt, evil, and maybe even ugly.
Right?
Well how come the powers that be don’t do that? How come Dianne Feinstein is great pals with Orrin Hatch? How come Bill Clinton and George HW Bush love hanging out together? How come Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s closest friend on the Court is Antonin Scalia?
What are we missing here? I think we’re missing the obvious fact that the American people are PAWNS to the powers that be. Having us fight with each other over ideological scraps and dehumanize each other means the powers that be get to stay right where they are, looking down from on high like aristocrats at the Coliseum watching the slaves tear each other to pieces.

* Oh, and p.s. we don’t need to have nationally competing candidates for office or a headquarters in Washington D.C. or million dollar budgets to be a political party or a voting bloc. All we have to do is stay unified and stay PRESENT on the web and in person — but especially on the internet. Because as news and events develop, the internet is the EASIEST and most FREE way for people newly demoralized or disgusted by the obama administration to find us.

murphy, it HAS always perplexed me to see what appear to be polar political opposites laughing together and chatting each other up–clearly NOT at odds. WTF? Your explanation is brilliant and I think it is exactly right. Pretty eye-opening.

Gee, Murphy, ouch. I thought it was possible to want to reform the Democratic party and still be PUMA. I didn’t know that relegated me to the land of Obotia. My bad.

Are you satisfied with how President Obama has governed in his first 100 days in office?

BTW, I was surprised at the results on a site that leans, no tilts, left.
DeadGirl 04.26.09 at 1:14 pm
I think PUMA is now a moderated term in most blogs on the MSM, and certainly on the left!
But perhaps not so on YOUTUBE, for instance, which is where I first saw PUMAPAC, and I understood immediately that meant a Political Action Committee, and based on all of the blog comments I saw that spoke to my situation so immensely, I knew this meant there were people organizing around the experience, which I shared with them, and I IMMEDIATELY googled PUMAPAC, and came right over here.
That, in short, is how I found PUMA. That is how the rest will find PUMA.
murphy 04.26.09 at 1:20 pm
not at all Cinie — I dont believe the Democrats will ever want Pumas as part of their constituencies. I may be wrong, but I believe obama and brazile and the rest of them meant it when they told us they dont need us anymore and “stay home”
Puma will always want Democrats.
No need to be inflammatory this early in a thread.
I linked to your article because I agree with it 100%.
If what you’re saying is that both sides are astro-turf and the thing to do is choose which shade of astroturf suits you better, then fine. I agree with that proposal.
Puma is NOT astroturfed. Does that mean we will always be outsiders? fringe hold-outs? perhaps.
As long as we keep kicking each other out of a virtual party we will!

Re-posted from downstairs.
Murphy, Welcome back to Boston. Hope your day goes well.
At the risk of reigniting the discussion of race, I want to say this anyway, because I feel like saying it.
I have to disagree with you somewhat about your thread. I have a different take on this:
So, yep — Sally and Johnny are silly, limousine liberals. They’re even “racists” by a limited definition. But so are the black people who, assumedly, created the websites. Sally and Johnny are EveryWhitePerson in the Black People Love Us cosmology. Nope, not all white people are fascinated by very curly hair and hip hop idioms.
______________
One of the points of the satire is the ad hominem attack, the generalization, the comfortable conclusion. It’s easy for you to see that Sally and Johnny are stereotypes. If you’re white (and, evidently, Hispanic, Asian, working class, )you know this stereotype doesn’t apply to you or anyone you know. You know there is more to the story of your attitudes than what others see. It ticks you off. You yell back. It’s easy to see the “racism” , sexism, misogyny in the most subtle comment or turn of phrase. “Sweety”, “honey”, “dear”, when men use those terms your blood boils because they represent a history of subservience, inferiority, bondage, that you are aware of and yet for all the millions of times it’s been pointed out, the men don’t seem to “hear” you. You know this reference is not a minor point; it’s the ship’s prow as it cuts through deeper waters.S0 men argue about hyper-sensitivity, feign ignorance or innocence, shun you as a troublemaker. Eventually, over the divide there is alienation and then resentment. Same is true with African-Americans and the subject of race in America. We see the subtleties and connections that you don’t.
I remember when women’s history month came around and people kept going to the post office to compare the number of African Americans on the postage stamps. The fact that many of them were women was not a cause for celebration, just despair. Because black women are black, not women. Black cancels out every other tangent of connection in most women’s minds. That’s highly alienating, since black women experience all of the limitations of any other women, with an added dash of contempt for not being part of America’s beauty standard.
Are there, currently, any races in America that can reasonably be associated with a lack of evolution?
Gosh. After all the shouting in the last two days about the pain of Africa-Americans being compared to apes, I still see ‘those I don’t get it’ looks and justifications for saying whatever the f— one feels like saying. Words hurt. Hate begins with words that are attached to concepts and the hate goes on from there. When words of contempt are used, they hurt women, too.
The worst thing, and I apply this to every group, is when a group uses pejoratives willfully, remaining willfully tone-deaf to the impact.
African-Americans are only referred to when the reference is in the negative. This is also true of “Mexicans” If this standard was applied to any other group, they too, would feel resentment. What brown or black woman would come to puma pac if no one can get past racial resentments long enough to embrace them as women? This isn’t minor, as most of the world’s women are brown or black.
I often feel as if I’m being talked about as if I’m not “here” as a black AND a woman. I’m sure black women, and probably brown Hispanics also wear a cloak of invisibility. There is seldom an attempt to understand without defensiveness about having to STFU over what is seen as true. Why don’t “you” ask sometimes about how it is with others, instead of tell?
With this statement, particularly, I felt the old pinch of alienation:
One of the cruelest ironies of the rise of obama is that the black electorate has been effectively isolated from its allies in the white/hispanic/asian lower and working class.
__________________________
When did “we” get separated from all of these other people? Did “we” do it to ourselves? Did it start and end with the nomination of Obama?
Let me speak as a cipher for “my” people: racism, no and no.
So, I will call BS when I hear it, even if it pisses everyone off.
murphy 04.26.09 at 1:23 pm
or in other words, my answer to the question you pose,
“whose side can you live with having been on? Soros or Koch? Neither?”
is neither.
if yours is Soros, that doesnt make you an Obot — it makes you a Democrat!
I’ve never equated democratic party members who voted for obama as obots.
Only Obots are obots. The vast majority of democrats who voted for obama are NOT obots.
obviously.
theamericanway 04.26.09 at 1:25 pm
Adding undeniable substance to Murphy’s premise that there is one party in DC is this from Rasmussen:
…While half the nation has a favorable opinion of last Wednesday’s [Tea Party] events, the nation’s Political Class has a much dimmer view—just 13% of the political elite offered even a somewhat favorable assessment while 81% said the opposite. Among the Political Class, not a single survey respondent said they had a Very Favorable opinion of the events while 60% shared a Very Unfavorable assessment….
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics2/51_view_tea_parties_favorably_political_class_strongly_disagrees
To recap; Rasmussen polls a group it calls ‘the nation’s Political Class’ and then refers to that class as ‘the political elite.’
John Edwards could have warned us that there are 3 Americas. But he turned out to be terribly unreliable, didn’t he?

Not trying to be confrontational, just trying to understand. It just seems to me, and I think it’s worth noting that everything I advocate is based on MY perceptions alone, that working to fix a party from the outside is difficult, but, ultimately, doable. Working to reform the system, I would imagine, requires having a new one ready to put in place. Either way, though, you have to recognize the AstroTurf on both sides before you can reject it. But, like I said inflaming the issue is not my goal. Understanding it, is.
murphy 04.26.09 at 1:33 pm

Good morning PUMAs???? (or are we)
Welcome home Murphy – haven’t been to CA for about 10 years but liked it pretty well when I was there………….wish you could’ve had a layover here in flyover land – I would have loved to have met you at MPLSSTPAUL airport and had a drink or coffee or whatever………..
I haven’t posted much lately – mostly just reading the posts and watching the fights going on and on and on again and again and again………
Just have a comment in regard to your post today – as you may or may not remember, we here in MN elected Jesse Ventura as our Governor a few years ago – he ran as an independent – his cabinet was made up of repugs, democraps, and independents – love him or hate him – he was our governor –
He recently was on some news show with Willy Nelson and I heard part of the opening of the show – Jesse said – paraphrasing here – People think there is such dislike between the parties but behind the scenes – we’re all the same – in public and particularly for the media – we disparage, etc. the other party -but then – it’s all kiss and makeup off the screen – he was Governor for four years so he did get to experience all of the 2-faced bullshit going on…………..I am NOT a Democrap any longer – since May 31, 2008 actually – I also am NOT a republican – I am an independent and as such, will pick and choose the issues that I want to support – I find that I am becoming less liberal when I read about the 1.5 trillion debt – hear about the millions who have no jobs – & then I wonder – if people aren’t working, they aren’t paying taxes – how is the fraud going to continue to buy those $100 steaks, fly around the country, etc. if there’s no money coming into the coffers? Just keep printing it???? Then we can be like Zimbabwe and carry around paper bags full of money because it’s not worth anything -I also was awfully disappointed when I read your statement about at least 5000 registered bloggers on our site and that we didn’t make the $50,000 request for PUMAPac to do things – if all of those bloggers donated $10 bucks, we would be there……….You know how much and how often I have donated to the PAC….this was because I truly enjoyed the back in the day stuff when we sent letters, emails, faxes, all that stuff – ordered flowers for Hillary – wish we could back to that and leave the doubletalk bs – Philosophy 101 crap where it belongs….in the toilet….like the fraud says – words should mean something but too many words on this blog mean nothing………………
Okay………….can we do something fun? Have cupcakes?
antifish 04.26.09 at 1:46 pm
OK, I’m off to better endeavors. I can’t continue on this subject for a third day in a row.
The Sally and Johnny site just made me very sad. It doesn’t really matter who is behind it. Whether it’s white people, black people or both, the site ridicules both races. I don’t see where that’s productive or conducive to advancing race-relations. It’s just mean.

Murphy,
great new post. My sentiments eggactly!
I’ve been shouting about it myself.
MKfromLA 04.26.09 at 1:54 pm
Murphy – I completely agree that it’s 100% about money & slaves, but not sure what you mean by “extremely minor points” tearing us apart. Whether or not those points are minor – or extreme – depends (as dear Pumabear says) on which ox is being gored.
If the “extremely minor points” are the ideological scraps, then I agree that it’s minor and moot as well. If the “extremely minor points” is when we dehumanize each other racism or sexism, then, well, uh, that’s where we get into the bloody zone. The bloody zone is a trench we can’t easily climb out of.
KarenWI 04.26.09 at 1:55 pm
I agree 100% to the thread message. It’s almost like to those in government (BOTH parties, AND the 2 independents) it’s all just a big game to play. And what is the end result of the “game”? Who wins? Certainly not us. This is what I’ve been saying all along…. the whole government system is corrupt. I’m all in favor of a 3rd party. BUT.. and here’s the rub… a 3rd party isn’t going to have the money and “apparatus” that the dems and repubs have, and will very likely only result in the same thing that Perot did- divide one or both parties so that the one who wins (from dem or repub- not the 3rd party) is a “weak” candidate due to not having over 50% of the vote. Dividing the vote 3 ways is going to almost certainly leave the winner less than 50%.
There are many who are going to vote dem even if Satan himself were running, and the same is true for the repubs.
Where does that then leave us? What can we do?
antifish 04.26.09 at 1:58 pm
Oh, and while you discuss your feelings and air your grievances today, please remember the LGBT community. They are the only truly oppressed people left in this country because unlike women and people of color they, in most cases, have NO legal redress for the inequalities being heaped upon them.
Have a wonderful Puma day.
KarenWI 04.26.09 at 2:03 pm
ps- Whatever happened to “we the people”? It seems to have vanished into the mists of antiquity with “the good ol’ boys club” in government. Interestingly enough…. things that “vanish” in those mists are not gone for good… they’re just obscured within all the “mist”. Somehow… somehow we need to be able to FIND them in those mists and blow the “smoke” away from those “smoke and mirrors”…. and get back to running the country as “we the people” again.
Asian4Hillary 04.26.09 at 2:19 pm
I am laughing here, I had to call my friend Kim (she’s black), I told her to read this particular blog. Race card is the EASIEST tool to DIVIDE people especially organization such as this, it is a VERY EFFECTIVE weapon when the goal is create upheaval within an organization by inserting a few saboteurs. Me and Kim are both minorities, she’s black, I’m brown; WE KNOW when race card is being played like a violin. Kim herself was called racist last year when I invited her to go with me knocking door to door distributing flyers in heavily democratic area in my city ( I have the map up to now, including how many people live in one address). Here’s something me and my friend find totally laughable, both of us were called racist when we were distributing flyers door to door. I’ll never forget when Kim said to this woman who screamed at us with all kinds of invictives: “Exuse me you call us racist? She’s brown I am black, look at yourself.” Kim was so angry I thought she’d give the woman a shiner. I have to put Kim inside my car to calm her down, she’s a level headed woman, but she lost her cool when that woman called us all kinds of derogatory remarks.
ALWAYS remember this, when a person calls you “racist”, they’re showing their OWN brand of racism. Majority of the time those who label people as racist, are the MOST racist person you’d come across but they always make an excuse of “sensitivity, politically correctness,” let me say this that is DOWNRIGHT COPOUT!
When others see a straight line, I am seeing a curve on that line. I read between the lines, I CAN see when divisiveness is being created by using SUBTLETY. Politicanl affiliation don’t mean diddly squat in the real struggle outside of the internet. Blog such as this is good, it helps people to realize they’re NOT alone, they’re others like them who have the same view but afraid to speak out because its not “politically correct.” It is better to offend people right on their face than behind their backs; say what you mean and mean what you say.
I do NOT cater to sensitivity or political correctness, BUT I always respect other peoples opinion even if I don’t agree with them. That is called freedom of speech, when you muffle the right of another human being to speak up their minds, YOU GIVE UP YOURS. I used to have a neighbor, member of ARYAN NATION, I told her and her husband, I will fight for their right to free speech, BUT if the said speech they’ve exercise FREELY hurt another human being physically I EXPECT them to be punished to the full extent of the law without reservation.
I know what is racism, I know words can hurt, but it doesn’t bother me. What can’t kill me, makes me strong. I have seen too much, in some I was in the thick of it. I know how people can easily be manipulated and blinded by the common goal they’re aiming for by one simeple word SUBTLETY. When doubts being cast in the guise of racism and you believe it, they got you.
As I’ve said before, learn FAST. think QUICK, don’t let that surging tide takes you in, you’ll be drowned and you won’t even know it.
Social-Psyche 04.26.09 at 2:25 pm
Hi to my sister history buff, KarenWI!
You know back in Lincoln’s day and in the years after– uh, the real President Lincoln, not that specially-selected president who keeps dropping Abe’s name– there were multiple political parties. Some were old and established like the Democrat-Republicans, some relatively new like Lincoln’s Republican Party, followed by a couple of hypenhated-name Democrat splinter groups, plus plenty of others.
A multiplicity of parties, undergoing periodic changes, is really this country’s system, or rather, tradition. We, the People, do not have a 2-party system simply because there ain’t none in our Constitution, nor in the Delaration, nor should there be.
We are stuck with an unconstitutional duopoly of 2 minor parties. The numerical majority of Americans already are independent. We independent voters represent our nation’s largest voting bloc.
Dividing the duopoly is one of the very steps we need to take! We need to divide and conquer them because Karen, they are doing that now to us.
I realize people are stuck in the Lesser of Two Evils rut. Maybe you’ll find some answers and ideas about that problem in this Special Commentary:
* How to Really Throw Parties in a Sleepy Banana Republic
I dedicate this three-part commentary to all country-loving independents and party exiles in hell. Part {1} is a "corny" patriotic Statement of Grief & Grievances; {2} tells why & how we should get the Two-Headed "Duopoly" Party Monster off our backs; {3} pragmatic and symbolic reasons to Impeach Obama Now, with non-partisan ideas for real-world action from us keyboard commandos.

1. No sexism, racism, or homophobia
2. No insulting other Pumas, including condescension
3. No campaigning for Obama
The first rule excludes wedge issues related to the bodies we live in.
The second rule encourages us to create an ambience of inclusiveness.

The few women “friends” I have (very few) are a bit mite shallow and not really into anything beyond their comfortable lives and their social settings. That is why I prefer to do my sign holding, my rallies by myself. They talk a good talk and argue a good one too but when it comes to action, they are no where to be found.

I know what you mean. Talk is cheap BUT real action is HARD; its like having your wisdom tooth pulled without anaesthesia. It takes a LOT of fortitude to stand up and be counted even if you’re alone – that is something that defies anything! Last year when you were holding that sign in an island in the middle of traffic, I SALUTED YOU. You’re a TRUE BRAVE HEART, A TRUE PATRIOT. Very FEW would do it especially doing it ALONE, that requires a LOT OF GUTS AND RESOLVE and a very FOCUS MIND. Patriotism has NO political affiliation nor it has color; it is what it is. This country needs more people like YOU, who do more walking than talking. Hugs!

SWINE FLU OUTBREAK – Nature Biting Back at Industrial Animal Production?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/swine-flu-outbreak—-nat_b_191408.html
The company responsible for putting together the flu outbreak timeline, Veratect, has established a Twitter feed for nearly real-time updates on the unfolding swine flu situation.
http://twitter.com/Veratect
Residents [of La Gloria, Perote Municipality, Veracruz State, Mexico] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to ‘flu.’ However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak.

Morning PUMAs. Glad you and Jr. made it home safely. California is somewhat empty without you and the blog was nearly on fire without you.
Like Anti, some issues that were beat into the ground for the past couple of days have me wanting to find something else to do but blog right not.
I am so done talking about Lori, just makes me livid.
I am so done talking about Ladyhawkke’s attemted racist comment. Personally, I like her and don’t think she had any intention of digging up such protracted drama on the blog.
At one point I thought fixing the Democratic Party was the best goal, the only way I see that happening is to vote the bums out and put a new batch of people in, and hope they can do a better job. Is someone new a good bet, or does the ‘power’ of the job corrupt their objective to better their position in the following term?
I don’t know.
God, I am glad you are back to the blog Murphy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freddie, I have had similar problems in past career to yours proving myself. I was a 5’1″ General Contractor about a decade ago. I loved it an made some decent pay. First impression was always a challenge with men, it’s their turf, but I knew what I was talking about, didn’t take any crap, was fair and always added a dash of humor so the guys warmed up pretty easily. Got out of the area as I grew older and didn’t want to ‘work’ so hard.
My job now is great, pay is bad but love the people. I picked a place where there is no dress code except I can’t wear my pj’s and I have to wear shoes. My kind of place…except during an election I am with 99% obots. Nothing is perfect.

Yesterday I got the chance to see Media Malpractice – How Obama Got Elected – in a very crowded theater in Orange County CA. Must say those conservatives are a friendly bunch – lots of nice conversation in the ladies room. Anyway – the film was a reiteration of all we have been saying here on the board since the primaries began. My fellow PUMA Cathy and I agreed that we knew 90% of what was said but it was nice to see it in a cohesive format. There was so much more that could have been covered – but the film was 2 hours long as it was. The second part of the film covered the attacks on Sarah Palin – the filmaker John Zeigler had a sitdown with Palin in January after the election – he showed her some of the media attacks against her and she was surprised at some but answered everything thrown at her. Also the film showed snippets of the interviews with the Obama voters who knew nothing about anything yet voted for Obama.
It was hard sitting there, I must admit, watching BO on the screen spouting all his garbage and then watching the media eat it up and downright lie – but when Hillary got the biggest hand from the crowd with her proclamation that she and John McCain had the experience and Obama had the speech – it was all worth it.

Don’t get mad girl, its bad for your beauty, plastic surgery is expensive……LOL
To change the democratic party, the change MUST come from the people itself, politicians will not change regardless of their party. My objective from here on out is vote out all corrupt politicians regardless of their gender. Eight years for ANY politicians to be in the capitol hill is too much. Majority of them has good intentions, but the lure of money will corrupt 99.99% of them and power is makes anyone susceptible to be corrupted. Once they’ve tasted power and easy money, they’ve become self serving, they don’t serve the people anymore but their own vested interest. Take for Example Claire Mckaskill (sp), in short time as US Senator she have made millions. If you want to get rich quick (aside from winning lottery jackpot), enter politics.

#26 Social- Yup… there were the whigs just to name one now-extinct one. Lincoln was the first republican to run in the brand-new republican party. You’re right that our country wasn’t founded on a 2-party system. The difference, in my mind, is the “political machine” and “power” that have built up in those 2 parties over time. Back when there were different “fluid” changes of parties there hadn’t been any that got as ROOTED as the 2 we have now. There is now so much money, computerization, and who-knows-what-else in the HQ’s of these parties right now, that a new one would have a very difficult time going over them. It would be like local high school principal running as an independent for POTUS. Where would they get the name recognition? Where would they get the capital? What about the big-name donors? Today in business there’s “networking” plus a LOT of money. Yeah, I know, I’d like less political ads and calling and mailing too; but it just ain’t gonna be, LOL. Today’s politics need money, big donors, and a LOT of them! It is not a totally insurmountable obstacle, but it is definitely a formidable one. Plus, as I said before, the parties (particularly the dems with the unions) have such a solid “base” of reliable voters that it will make it just as difficult to get people to vote for a new 3rd party when they’ve “voted this way all their lives” and “this is the way my union boss says to vote” (this is the HUGE problem in my area with all the unionized paper mills). People in my area don’t care WHO is running… it’s democrat no matter who because they are union and feel have been- in some cases pressured, and in other cases brainwashed, and in others just following the crowd- not voting with their brain or heart, but with solely a party line. How does a 3rd party break through the lack of money, big-name donors, name recognition, and always-vote-this-party-no-matter-what mindset in TODAY’S political landscape? To summarize what I just said in so much hot-air… it isn’t the same today as it was in Lincoln’s day to run for POTUS…..

#25- Asian, you are spot-on with your comment that those who accuse of racism are the ones who are being racist themselves. That is pretty much what I posted downstairs. I wrote that when you point the finger at someone, you have 3 fingers of that same hand pointing back at you. I also think you are spot-on with the timing of those racist things. Just as Obama used racism to win, his cronies are using the SAME tactic to divide and scare people. When we fall for the “you’re racist” thing we are swallowing what his plan was all during the campaign (and still is) hook, line, and sinker. We’ve just been “suckered” when we fall for that, IMHO.
freddiebrown 04.26.09 at 3:43 pm
Asian – Yes, I do get a bit frustrated with talkers. Talk is easy – even easier behind the computer screen. I am not a talker, more a listener or reader and I make up my own mind after looking into BOTH sides. It is very dangerous as well, to just listen to the people that are on “your side”. In my youth, I was so painfully shy and afraid of everything – the dark, catepillars, being socially accepted. Now, I am still afraid of those same things, except I have forced myself to have the courage to speak and to do things that I am afraid of that is important to me. Even when I am quaking in my shoes. I found a trick long ago when I travelled to Mexico by myself. I was staying in a nice hotel and walking along the hotel grounds. A group of sailors (3 I remember) blocked my path. One of them put his hand on the wall so I couldn’t walk past him and said something smart. Of course I was scared, but I had my dark glasses on. I said in a very even firm tone, “get out of my way, I am not interested” or something to that effect.. I was in my 20′s. They did – I was lucky. So if I am too scared, I put on my dark glasses so no one can see the fear.. never let them see you sweat. Once, I went white water rafting. They had a lunch break and asked if anyone wanted to “ride the rapids”. The rapids were small but swirling.. you basically swim to the center of the Kern river and let the rapids take you. Someone down would throw you a life thingy to tow you back to the bank. I can’t swim, still can’t – I can’t even tread water in a swimming pool. I made the people promise to take care of me and I dog paddled to the middle of the river and rode the rapids. It was a foolish thing to do but it didn’t kill me and it made me stronger. I had to do things to “bulk” up my confidence and courage. I didn’t like to be afraid of everything and be limited by my fears. I don’t want to not do something because no one wanted to go with me or I could not talk anyone into it. Hence I went to Matzalan Mexico by myself (I got deported cos my papers were not in order but they fixed it and got me back on the plane) I was surprised that I really wanted to hold up the sign during the primaries – it meant a lot to me to take my voice outside of the Puma blog. I was not easy by any means. The physical part was a piece of cake – everything else was not easy.
Sometimes I wish some more of the Pumas here were more able to go outside their comfort zone. I know tons of us here have stepped outside of our comfort zone since the primaries and done so much and put themselves out so much. I think a few more are just talkers. I do believe Pumas that come here are a brave and fiesty bunch… I have seen them. I have had one PUMA tell me she can only give out 5 flyers because, because, because…then she surprised me and more importantly herself.
So many stories that I got via email of the things they did that they did not blog about, made me realise that there are Pumas and there are kitty cats or pussy cats. Without a doubt, the Pumas are the ones who keep coming here and even if they don’t post or blog, they are Pumas. And I am very proud of being here in the company of wonderful Pumas.

“Women Reach for Power in Iceland
Iceland’s women blame men for the economic crisis that drove their nation to the verge of collapse. This weekend, they may elect their first female prime minister”
Paragragh from the article:
At Audur, there’s a simple recipe for success. “We’ve brought greater female values into the financial world,” says Halla. The company isn’t interested in investments that quickly generate high yields. Instead, they focus on sustainable investments in projects that make as much sense socially and environmentally as they do for the investors themselves. The women call their business maxim “emotional capital,” or “profit with principles.”

I have a question for the blog that has been brought up by several people lately. What is the real possibility of PUMAs grouping with more disenfranchised folks to make a real strong 3rd party by the next election? (A third party that will throw a monkey (is that word racist?) wrench in the two party system and possibly put some good people in congress?

IIRC (I’m not allowing myself to peek) from yesterday, you were quoting your pastor. Karen, I know a similar quotation, which I discovered back in YODOY* when I was a kid, and have managed to hang onto in memory & notes (and it’s used in one of our site’s Random Quotation areas):
"A man should remember that when he points an accusing finger at someone else, he is pointing four more at himself."
- Louis Nizer (famous trial lawyer and author)
*YODOY* = Ye Olde Days of Yore (a bit redundant but looks and sounds better)

Facebook makes friends with attorneys general
By Jim McElhatton (Contact) | Sunday, April 26, 2009
The popular online social-networking site Facebook is making its first foray into politics.
The company gave $10,000 last month to a group that raises money to help elect Republican state attorney general candidates, according to a recent Internal Revenue Service filing by the Republican State Leadership Committee. Facebook said it also gave $10,000 to the Democratic Attorneys General Association.

The donations also come amid speculation that the company’s chief privacy officer, Chris Kelly, is weighing a bid to run for election as California’s attorney general in 2010. The company has declined to comment on the prospect.

WRT bqueen’s mention of SOS Clinton answering questions at the House Foreign Relations Committee hearing…
I caught a lot of it on C-Span’s repeat this afternoon. When she faced the same-old question about Sanger for the umpteenth time, she quelled it by using Thomas Jefferson as an example of an(other) important historical figure admired greatly despite having done some deplorable things. In Jefferson’s case, it was slavery. In M. Sangers’ case, it was racism.
Here’s the text of what she said in response to Rep. Chris Smith (R-New Jersey) asking her if the Obama administration wants to “weaken or overturn pro-life laws and policies in African and Latin American countries….”

Good post. Although I don’t hate Malkin. Many times she’s right on attacking both the left and right. I don’t always agree ideologically, but she puts up with the same crap us women have to put up with. Token female. Token minority. Subject to so much obot racism and women bashers.
I would say I’m right leaning moderate. Fiscally conservative. Give me govt programs that give bang for the buck. Fix those that don’t. Socially, I’m more of a live and let live as long as you aren’t in my face.
My religion precludes me from being pro-choice, however I don’t feel I should tell people what to do. So I don’t vote on this matter. Although I am against late term except when the mother’s health is at risk.
And I have friends of all sorts, liberal, moderate, and right. Anyone can be an asshole it isn’t exclusive to political affiliation. I find most assholes to be Obama supporters, strangely enough.
People are waking up. The most bi-partisan event that I’ve been to lately was a tea party organized by a Democratic 61 year old grandmother. All affiliations were there and we had a great time. Why? Because it was just real hard working Americans exercising their rights. That is the bond. We may disagree on certain issues, but how America should be or feel like was the common denominator. Obama is just wrong. His view of America is just wrong.
I’ve got some PUMA gear. I’ve also got a picture with Michelle Malkin. She’s a sweetheart by the way. I like both places.

So, if one calls out racism… they’re racist?
I’m guessing it follows that if one calls out sexism, they’re are sexist.
If one doesn’t call out racism, they’re also racist.
If one doesn’t call out sexism, they’re also sexist.
Sounds like we’re being asked to just shut the heck up about both, which, without push-back, would allow the ism messages to flourish.

DWP, this wouldn’t have been the case had not The One used it as a PLOY to win the election. Because he used it when it didn’t exist, by using “racist” as THE accusation against anyone and everyone who disagreed with his policies, it turned the “racist” back on him. By doing this he set back race relations by decades. Blame Obama- he’s the one who “used” it when it wasn’t there, creating a “reverse racism” problem.

DWP I think what they are saying is… The same people that are calling out racism are the racist. Because they are jumping to conclusions that certain comments are racially motivated, when indeed they are not. Instead of being polite and asking what exactly the poster is implying they are jumping to the conclusion that their post are racially motivated.
How about the people quick to say your a racist instead say, Ladyhawkke
when you call Michelle Obama a gorilla it comes across as racist, I hope that in the future you will be a little more selective in the words you use when posting. Then see what she has to say. But when people go on the defense over stuff like that and refuse to accept apologies you can’t help but think they are looking for a fight. Which is why some of us think they are the ones with the racially motivated charges.
DancesWithPumas 04.26.09 at 7:08 pm
I don’t believe obama created the racism problem, (or reverse racism, as you term it), I think he unmasked it and allowed/encouarged it to flourish out in the open, to his own advantage. In the same way he unmasked and allowed / encouraged the sleeping giant of sexism/misogyny to flourish out in the open, to his own advantage.
obama hasn’t set my racial relations back by decades. I’m current as of 2008. The only change in me, admittedly it’s a major one, is that I don’t give a flying fig about race, or the political, social, physical struggles of any other disenfranchised minority, that doesn’t hold at their fore, the rights, status, and equality of all women and all girls.
I lifted my fingers over the years in the struggles of others… I lift only one finger now.

Personally, after Obama won the Presidency, I have had a general dislike of Black people. I see them as his followers. Of course I know that there are many who are not. Call me childish, mean spirited, what ever you want. These are my feelings and I am not saying that it is right. Of course it is not and I am not about to discuss this with my shrink either ! Nonetheless, that is what it is. I despise him and I see the harm in the long term that could and would come to our country. Thus, I believe he has set racial relations a bit back in my own myopia but it is all mine.
KarenWI 04.26.09 at 8:24 pm
I still say by emphasizing over and over that everyone who disagreed with his policies was “racist” and by saying that if you don’t want him as POTUS you are being “racist” – both of these statements were blatantly WRONG in MOST cases… and to state them over and over got people actually BELIEVING it (I know quite a few who believe it after hearing it often enough). That, to me, set back race relations a long ways from what it was, creating (my own invention here) “reverse racism” by creating racism out of something that ISN’T racism at all. It’s a “manufactured” racism. Manufactured by Obama and his cohorts. That sure didn’t ADVANCE race relations.

Not sure if I got through what I was meaning there…. so I’ll try again. When you take someone who isn’t racist, and “create” racism in them by using repetitive psychology to get to think they ARE “racist” if they didn’t vote for Obama, or don’t support his policies, that is creating a brand-new racism that previously didn’t exist- and, in reality, isn’t even racism now… it’s a “fake” and “manufactured” racism. That is why I, personally, feel that Obama set back race relations. When you create racism out of things that are NOT racist, even if it is a “fake” racism, you have increased the divide between the races rather than reducing the divide and merging the races.
DeadGirl 04.26.09 at 9:03 pm
freddiebrown 04.26.09 at 8:05 pm
I want to respond to this, but I am not sure how to do so, in such a way that helps to change your understanding of what you are feeling.
I do not think it is fair to put this on to black people, just because they are black and voted overwhelmingly for him in the GE. I wrote on the blog the day after the election, to share something about what happened. I was appalled at the election results, while at the same time, I discovered a weight had lifted off of African Americans, that I was not completely aware was there, until he had “won” the Presidency. Something changed for them on that day, and it had nothing to do with Barack Obama, who is mixed race, by the way, but it had everything to with race. My observation of this phenomenon did not in any way shape or form change the fact that I knew he would not be what everyone, black, white, asian, hispanic, etc. thought he was.
You cannot blame the people who were manipulated, and convinced to vote for BO. Well, actually, you can, that is your choice. But a lot of people DID NOT vote for him, who are black, and he won because of all of the WHITE PEOPLE working for him, including the world’s top behaviorists (i.e. experts on how to manipulate people). They used every single filthy trick in the book to win, and if you single out blacks, you are leaving about 45% of the rest of the voters in the U.S. off the hook.
catsden 04.26.09 at 9:06 pm
freddiebrown, if you are still on the blog I have some suggestions from my husband about the drumming.
DeadGirl 04.26.09 at 9:06 pm
“and if you single out blacks, you are leaving about 45% of the rest of the voters in the U.S. off the hook.”
It was White People, and WOMEN who voted him in. end of story.
KarenWI 04.26.09 at 9:09 pm
DeadGirl #94… and, IMHO, a lot of the white people who voted him in did so because it was hammered into them that if they didn’t it was being “racist”. That sure was the main “hammer” used in my area, I know that. I heard that over and over before the G.E.- “if you don’t vote for him you are RACIST. You aren’t RACIST are you? Then VOTE for him.”
catsden 04.26.09 at 9:20 pm
DancesWithPumas: would you please send my email addy to freddiebrown and ask her to write me. I want to pass on a few ideas about her drum.

Just ran into quite a piece of art news…
A new painting called The Truth will go on display at Union Terminal Station April 29 in New York to mark Obama’s 100th day in office…
Article appears under the title: Obama Worship Goes Into Overdrive as 100 Day Mark Approaches by P.J.
Gladnick. Please read the whole article and press release as well especially comments..most especially comments from artist who painted the piece. The Headline of the article (above) states one point of view..the artist …much more that of an artist …re art and the painting…
I am rather glad to see the painting and the artist’s comments..
Here is my attempt at a link:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/p-j-gladnick/2009/04/25/obama-worship-goes-overdrive-100-day-mark-approaches

excellent point dead girl.
link worked NOP.
thanks!
NewOrleansPuma 04.26.09 at 9:32 pm
The artist’s comments on the media and politics in relation to this painting noted in #98 is my focus and reason for posting…and while the article takes one point of view..it the painting and the reason for its existence according to the artist that I love! …
NewOrleansPuma 04.26.09 at 9:32 pm
it is the painting and the reason…
NewOrleansPuma 04.26.09 at 9:41 pm
BrooklynNY and other New Yorkers: Surely would love to hear your response to the weight and impact of the painting in and of itself rather than just in the picture of it…if you get into Union Station for any reason…Think I would have to go just to see this..in person…anyway..if you can..would be fun…to hear.
NewOrleansPuma 04.26.09 at 9:42 pm
Ok..gotta go ..thought this item might be of interest here..

Deadgirl – Thanks for your explanation. I know my prejudice is misplaced as anyone can easily see that including myself. I am a sore loser in this instance. I hope to heed your explanation and not see every black person as having OBAMA stamped on their forehead (like I did).

Reposting from last night:
I want to take action FOR fair elections and AGAINST sexism in politics and the media._I’d vote for online and real world activism.
I took a look at the action center._and I would like to join 2 groups.
I see 411 on the 111- do you all discuss the legislation somewhere? Are there prowls?_Is this an active group or is it on hiatus?
Is the SOS forum active behind the scenes? How do you join? Are there prowls?_
I remember meeting up with 2 PUMA people back in late summer because I got hooked up with them through Puma- are any more meet-ups planned?_Any info is appreciated, thanks.

bluelady-you join a team by sending an email to the action center with the name of the team in the subject line. I can’t remember if you put “join” in the subject line or not so you might want to include a message in the body of the email.
NewOrleansPuma 04.26.09 at 10:32 pm
Murphy: I find the painting ironic..the arms uplifted remind me of Nixon..the head in repose mimicking the crucified Christ …but the dude is laughing: mission accomplished..the curtains closing or opening on the Presidential seal..emblem of the Presidency ..whatever..he has that in hand clearly..and the image reminded me of MK’s comments today about the reality map one brings to everything…sorta like the older “Gestalt” idea…
What is that one sees in this image? What does one bring and what does one take? You..a yawn…me..a laugh…others? who knows.

That’s a good idea, but I think youtube has bigger audience, we wanted people to see it, youtube has 10 million members, people can easily locate the film using the search engine in youtube. The more people watch the film, the more we bring awareness to millions of people in this country.
If you can post a link where people can see the whole film, please do, I’ll just make Part one of the film then I will add the link in annotation so people can see the whole film uninterrupted.

I need some help with my work and wonder if some of you still here can help. I need it by tomorrow preferably. It is easy and can be fun but for me, I always hit a blank wall cos I have been doing this for 7 years.
I need to name my handbags… It is easier to remember and visualise when we give them names which cross references numbers. Typically I like one word names so it is easier.. something catchy and short as we need to write orders quickly – so nothing like rumplestilkskin.. Two short words are ok if I have nothing else. In the past, I have use the following. Please don’t think this is a frivious request. Manytimes this is really difficult for me – staring at the paper for hours.

1) I have not photographed them yet… there’s a lot so it would not be possible.
2) they are everyday bags. Fun, bold, unique, colorful. Nothing you would find at Walmart. Nothing basic or conservative. People and Many Many have told us that people have run after them or followed them to ask about it and touch it. I had one store in the Bay area of San Fran, fighting to carry my line eventho someone a few doors already does. She threatened me with some legal action if I didn’t and kept calling. I won’t back down because the other folks had it for 5 years. Anyway, they are just bags – that have an element of a puma soul in it.
How’s that to jump start your imagination. Sorry for the long explanation. I ramble on like an idiot sometimes.

Thanks to the link to the art piece, NOP. I think “The Truth” is brilliantly confrontational.
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/p-j-gladnick/2009/04/25/obama-worship-goes-overdrive-100-day-mark-approaches
While focusing on “The Messiah” aspect, the deliberate focal point, the “The Truth” gets lost. Whether the “viewer” is offended that he is presented as the Messiah or whether the “viewer” agrees he is the Messiah, is irrelevant. Some want to crucify Obama. Some see him as the presidency resurrected.
Viewers (voters) can argue over that all they want, but in doing so “The Truth” will never be seen. The argument for or against only gives the image power. Only in stepping back from that focal point can one see “The Truth”: The MSM is responsible for the content of this image. “Newscom” is all over the piece like a copyright stamp over a photo.

Per Joseph Cannon at Cannonfire, this link to Corrente re: single payer health care. Pelosi wants to hear the people, her aide is asking for faxes in support. Those who want the option on the table, he’s the action info according to Corrente. Those who don’t, well, okay.

Funny way to promote inclusiveness with Pumas- a great deal of whom started as Democrats, and yet rejected BO.
Perhaps you need to define who your Pumas are in greater detail.
Or perhaps you need to morph from a personal blog to a more impersonal PAC.

Just ran into quite a piece of art news…
A new painting called The Truth will go on display at Union Terminal Station April 29 in New York to mark Obama’s 100th day in office…
—————-
New Orleans,
Thanks for posting the article about the Obama painting, First 100 days. I will go to Union Square on Wednesday, April 29th, and check it out. Should be interesting….It’s going to be open to viewing from 7 AM – 7 PM so that should give me plenty of time to see it. I am very curious to see how many people show up for it. And I am interested to see what my initial reaction will be to seeing it in the flesh and blood, although it isn’t very hard to imagine which side of the messiah/living demon continuum I’m going to fall on. (LOL). I am also very interested to see what the atmosphere in the crowd, if there is a crowd there, will be. I will report back and let you know.
Now I’m going to go back to your the link you posted and read the comments with the article more thoroughly. I just skimmed them last night when I originally read your posting. It wasn’t until this morning when I re-read your posting from last night that I saw you were drawing our attention to the comments as well….
Seems perfectly appropriate.

Loved Murphy’s reaction, by the way a visual to a visual…..

Who’s paying for the Truth painting in Union Square and who okayed the use of public space to display it? I notice that they got his smirk correct in the painting.

Washington Journal is reporting that Harry Reid has written an autobiography due out next month. In an epilogue he is claiming that he told Obama in 2007 that if he ran for the presidency in 2008, he could win it. So, Reid is making himself a kingmaker in his book. What a riot.

Got it, thank you. And, hello!
I think there’s an a huge difference between being called a “racist” / “hater” by obots, who label everything racism and hate, and being called out on obviously and historically laden exampes of racist statements.
I agree with your suggested approach to the commenter who was called out for a racist comment though.
DancesWithPumas 04.27.09 at 9:18 am
I thought the Truth painting was satire.
I love the over-exposure of obama… especially as a heroic, martyred, hip guy… it serves to remind people who are reaching into their empty pockets, the difference between madison avenue pr and reality.
PS I also enjoy the obot stalkers of pumapac… any publicity is good publicity for puma pac. Our stalkers seem to get our name out there almost as often as we do. Free, unwitting labor. (“morans”)

NewOrleansPuma,
Comments after article at Newsbusters re: “The Truth” painting to be unveiled in Union Sqaure, NYC, April 29th, were quite entertaining. Seems like a lot more negative reactions to Mr. Second Coming than positive ones.
Particularly got a kick out of some creative plays on words used by some of the posters, i.e. the “Lame Stream Media,” “Obeyme,” “Obamunist.” LOL.
Perhaps it’s my personal bias, but I can’t help but think the artist is actually making fun of Obama lovers by portraying their lord and savior not as a politician, a president, a dignified statesman, but instead as a rather silly-looking, pseudo-religious caricature with really poor taste in headware.
But then having him posed this way, sporting the novel headware, will be perfectly suitable for showing in Union Square, NYC. He’ll be in good company there. Just one of many looney-tunes wandering around the park, hanging out on street corners, dancing and talking to themselves, having imaginary loud arguments with people only they can see or hear, wearing all kinds of intereting get-ups….
Just another day in the city…
antifish 04.27.09 at 9:32 am
NOP,
Last night, I did go through the link you posted for “The Truth” and read everything thoroughly but when I returned, got distracted with naming handbags.
My thoughts, for what they are worth?
The Obots will be enthralled with this painting, for to them, he IS the Messiah and one to be worshipped. We’ve seen oh so much of that, haven’t we?
In the end, I believe it will become another poster for them to hang in the bedroom and masturbate by.
The Christian religious fundamentalists will be up in arms screaming blasphemy and I must admit, if one is religious, it certainly is that.
The Republican mouthpieces (Hannity, Limbaugh, etc) will use it as an opportunity to ridicule those who revere Obama.
Those who don’t like Obama for other reasons, well, those are obviously people who can think for themselves, so I don’t dare presume how they’ll react.
As for myself, I was disgusted by yet another image of this over-exposed, over-hyped, nothing. I’m with Murphy on this one. (Yawn).
DeadGirl 04.27.09 at 9:42 am
I agree with Anti and Murphy… Obama savior – yawn. Most Americans will see through that silliness as he is already a caricature of himself, most of all.
BrooklynNY 04.27.09 at 9:47 am
#252 BigCatLover 04.27.09 at 8:58 am
I don’t know who’s paying for the painting’s dispaly in Union Square, but I’d venture a guess it’s probably the artist himself or those affiliated with him. The city has to approve displays in the park, most likely, but their approval is not much more than a formality. He’s really just going to be one of many, many displays in that park. On any given day there, you’d see tons of artists displaying their work for sale, all kinds of flea market vendors’ tables, selling everything from flowers, jewelry, handbags, scarves, etc., etc., etc., not to mention an extensive and really wonderful farmer’s market, so Obamalot has a lot of competition for space and attention in the park.

persephone,
Perhaps Joe Klein or another Obama worshiper, Chris Matthews, should audition to sing I Don’t Know Why Why I Love Him to the tune of I Don’t Know How To Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar to serenade “The Truth” painting when it is unveiled at Union Square on Wednesday. It was written by my DUmmie FUnnies “co-conspirator,” pastor and parodist, Charles Henrickson. Here are the lyrics so you can start your song practice immediately:
The tune was written by Charles Henrickson not PJ Gladnick, as explained in PJ Gladnick’s preample to the lyrics he posted.
I didn’t take it as a spoof on feminists so much as a parody on Chris Matthews, Joe Klein et al., equating them to silly little lovestruck schoolgirls….
But I also think it calls to mind many of the so-called “Feminist” groups who stuck a knife in the back of Hillary Clinton and attacked Sarah Palin in true repulsive and unforgivable misogynistic fashion ~ Even more repulsive and unforgiveable, having come from other women….and women who falsely proclaimed themselves to be “feminists.” Think: CNN female reporters and anchors, Claire McCaskill types, Kathleen Sebelis, etc., etc., just to name a few…..Doesn’t really matter whether it was a man or a woman, there was one hell of an erotic component to their lust for an Obama victory. They just couldn’t get enough of him, swooning, panting and puffing, eye-lashes fluttering, tingly feelings going down their legs….and it didn’t matter one bit whether they were male or female. Yet, they’d all probaby proclaim themselves to be “feminist-sympathizers,” if not outright feminists. THAT doesn’t make them so, though…..
BrooklynNY 04.27.09 at 10:31 am
#269
Italicized comments above excerpted from the article, (not my words).
BrooklynNY 04.27.09 at 10:37 am
#269 (con’d) It paints them all as phonies and hypocrits, but I truly don’t see it as an attack on sincere feminists or feministic principles at all…. (Just my take).
NewOrleansPuma 04.27.09 at 10:54 am
Hurray..Thanks to everyone here who commented on The Truth painting and the article in which I found it. I very much appreciate reading all of the comments..
So..Is it “brillantly confrontational”..”a yawn”..”ironic”..
“satirical”..”blasphomous”..another “Messiah” affirmation..?
Well that is why I like it because given these comments and others that will be made here and elsewhere I hope…and given that it will be in a public space…this painting offers the opportunity to move beyond “just words” to a place deeper in the imagination..and there to evoke a response…
I think the painting sits right on the edge …where the rational and imaginative self mysteriously meet and engage..and respond..something not often enticed in this literal minded world…or marketing mindlessness images or prosetyzing posters..
Brooklyn: Can not wait to you go see it in person and offer that perspective….Great!
persephone 04.27.09 at 10:56 am
Brooklyn, you are correct, they are Henrikson’s lyrics-my mistake.
So maybe he should get the prowl bomb too.
(PJ sucks for re-printing IMO)
I find this very offensive:
But I like his face,
And I like his voice;
Makes my heartbeat race!
Makes me feel all moist!
I never thought I’d come to this:
Obama is my choice.
Don’t you think it’s rather shallow
I should vote for this fellow?
I’m the one who’s always been
So pure, so pissed, so feminist;
I don’t need men, oh no–
He scares me so.
But I like his face,
And I like his voice;
Makes my heartbeat race!
Makes me feel all moist!
I never thought I’d come to this:
Obama is my choice.
Yet, like in a romance novel,
I’m in love with a male model;
I’ve got to look! He signed my book!
My heart runs wild! I’ll bear his child!
I want the world to know:
He’s my “Big O”!
Obama, go!
I love you so!
The boyz have to get their little digs in, don’t they?
NewOrleansPuma 04.27.09 at 11:00 am
Pesephone: I like the fact that you noted the “error” in the lyrics posted in the article which had initially presented reference to the painting…
So here is a painting that evokes varied responses and it is posted within the context of a headline and commentary with its own particualar take with which as well another set of comments arises ..upon another reality..the original song…
With all of this embedding…no wonder …people get propagandized in this country!..lots hitting at once.
persephone 04.27.09 at 11:08 am
NOP
yes! how did the article go from being about o and the painting to
woman bashing bullshit like
“My heart runs wild! I’ll bear his child!”

#273 persephone 04.27.09 at 10:56 am
I understand your outrage, but for the life of me, I don’t see the lyrics as an attack on women in general, or “feminists,” in particular. I interpret the lyrics applying more to MEN like Chris Matthews, Keith Oberman, et al. The line: “I don’t need men,” seems more like something THEY’D say than that women would, after all they ARE straight men (or so they claim), how COULD they be so smitten with another MAN!
And I think it also points to the hypocritical, phony, self-proclaimed feminists that pretend to be for other women, but when push comes to shove, they knock the good woman under the bus and trip over each other to be first to swoon and bow to such an abusive, narcissitic and arrogant excuse for a man.
I see it as a parody on both men and phony feminists. I am not personally offended by the references to feminists. I myself also have nothing but contempt for so-called “feminists” who’ve been throwing other women under the bus for years, and then dancing on their faces….
That’s what really gets my ire up.
BrooklynNY 04.27.09 at 11:23 am
#275
The first thing I thought when I read this line: “My heart runs wild! I’ll bear his child!” was Chris Matthews. I can actually imagine him singing the lyrics. I saw him in my mind’s eye with a fake blond wig and the red lipstick stuck on his face when his ugly mug was plastered on all over the place many months ago….
NewOrleansPuma 04.27.09 at 11:25 am
pesephone and others: And before one does a prowl..please be sure you have noted another distinction..the lyrics..the text of I Don’t Know How to Love Him were written I believe originally by Andrew Lyold Webber or his lyricist (I do not remember that) for the EXTREMELY controversial Jesus Christ Superstar (which I by the way ..loved!)
Thus this guy who is currently attempting to parody Obama with his lyrics is initially creating a parody of that song…
Maybe someone can link the original lyrics..
One might conclude that the original Superstar lyrics would have been quite enough on their own as a parody of Obama..but
whether or not one finds those original lyrics enough…
Pesephone…you have named exactly I think that this guy Henrickson…does have the wrong crew in mind with his texts!
We need more attempts at visual Art in the culuture that speaks in ways differntly than words..for the entire “mind” of this culture and all of its realities have been reduced to politics and propaganda about it…Another reason why we ..the Republic…are so separated from our inner roots as humans in my view..
Again I thank you all for engaging in my attempt to see something else…
murphy 04.27.09 at 11:33 am

btw, good morning!

277Brooklyn: I tend to take your take on this particular item…but the parody lyrics regarding who is who and what is what re the “feminists” does as well I think leave a lot hanging…and thus..I think…pesephone as well points that out.

Don’t men usually project their weaknesses onto women, as a sort of peer-pressure on other men to keep up the fascade/myth?
They assign their (excuse the expression) hard-ons for obama onto women.
Take one look at the male fans of professional male sports teams… giggly little boys with man-lust for their teams and the individual players who are the object of their desire.
