Message to Paul Krugman:

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE ASTRO-TURFED.

If you havent had a chance to read Madamab’s post this morning about Krugman’s ridicule of the Tea Parties, dont miss your chance now. I make it easy for you:

JUST CLICK HERE.

“Look. These tea parties may be astro-turfed; run by Republican big-wigs. But guess what? Barack Obama’s “grassroots” movement, at least on the Internet, was run by David Axelrod and Moveon.org. Did that make it any less appealing or effective?

What makes a movement succeed is not how it looks to people who oppose it. It’s how it looks to people who believe in it.”

“What makes a movement succeed is not how it looks to people who oppose it. It’s how it looks to people who believe in it.”  Brilliant. I think I’ll make that the Quote of the Day.

That — in a nutshell, is the secret of Puma’s success. Those who opposed us, who are STILL insanely apoplectic over our very existence, have NEVER understood this very simple fact: if enough people believe that Something Is Not Right a movement Will Be Born.

There isn’t a blueprint. There isn’t a manual. There are no talking points. There is no budget. There are no purity tests. There is no quiz at the end. It doesn’t matter who you know, how many VIP’s read your email, where you went to college, how much money you make, how old you are, what you look like. None of this matters. And having all those things in abundance won’t make people line up to follow you. Just ask Mitt Romney.

A movement needs TWO THINGS:

One, and most importantly: A movement needs fertile ground. There must be a palpable shared feeling of SOMETHING in a community. It can be disgust with the policies of the Republican Party (that’s the ground the obama movement grew out of). It can be outrage at the Democratic Party and the sexist institutions of our country which hold ALL women back and down (from whence Puma sprang). Or it can be frustration and anger with the government in general and the super-rich corporate interests which pull its strings in particular (also Puma territory).

Two, and less importantly: A movement needs leaders. There must be someone or a small group of someones around whom people coalesce. Krugman and the influence peddlers who read him may worry publicly that the Tea Party movement will line up behind Limbaugh or Malkin or Scaife or whomever, but that’s hogwash. Those jokers have as much influence as they’ll ever have — they’re too limited by the work that they’ve ALREADY done to become the leaders of a real, NEW movement. They’re just cheerleaders for protests they hope will hurt the Democratic Party. Their vision is myopic and their aims are low.

The leaders of the populist movements of 2009 are still mostly undercover. They have not yet been recognized by the powers that be. But anyone who doubts that real, big, populist anger and action is brewing like hot tea in this country right now needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

And Pumas are an integral part of this populist movement. In fact, I would argue that we were the avant garde and that we continue to lead the way forward politically and philosophically:

  • We’re not against government spending: We’re against corruption and waste, and we are FOR a strong social net.
  • We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are  FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.
  • We’re not against government: We’re against government By the Few FOR the Few, and we are FOR government By the People FOR the People.
  • We’re not against Democrats: We’re against cronyism and we are FOR the protection of democratic principles.
  • We’re not against Republicans: We’re against corruption and degradation of the Constitution, and we are FOR Equal Rights for ALL  American citizens.
  • We’re not against men: We’re against woman-lynching, discrimination, and we are FOR women.

We saw obama for who he really was a LOOONG time ago. Our faith in the political party and the public institutions we thought we could trust was shaken to its foundation nearly a year ago. We’ve been writing, calling, marching, warning, protesting, pleading, persuading, and GROWING since June 2008.

And these new populist leaders really ARE out there — organizing, writing, blogging, planning, thinking, and dreaming. Because leaders really do come along just when they’re needed the most.

Pumas, we’ve been holding this ground for twelve solid months. The rest of the country is waking up to the disaster in Washington D.C. It’s going to be a long, hot summer — and we’re going to have the time of our lives.

Bravo..Murphy. Once again your perceptions and your timing are perfect. You are a seer of good heart and a will that embodies the best of all of us in this country.

Together..across this country…the people…we..the people…have yet to have our full say…but as you say…we are everywhere and that everywhere will not be silenced.

Just posting this for newbies, most on this blog already know if you post anything to CNN they never print your comments. Case in point most recently, if you post any supportive comments about Tea Parties to stories like this one:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/15/tea.parties/index.html

and state that you’re not a Republican, or that you’re an Independent or a Democrat, they will not post your comment.

While I agree Paul Krugman’s most recent column was off-the-mark, on the other hand I will keep reading his columns. Faithfully.

Don’t see anybody else in msm writing stuff like this:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/27/opinion/27krugman.html?_r=1

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/10/opinion/10krugman.html

He’s validated my views a number of times & at least I can send the links on to friends (all Democrats) who don’t look at me quite-so askance. And also, at least when I read his columns (unlike when I’m forced to watch FOX News now because there’s no one else saying anything), I don’t feel like I died & went to hell !!

Hey PUMAS

I went to the Albany NY’s tea party. It was well organized and well run. They were guessing that approximately 600 people attended. No right wingers were apparant and I didn’t see or notice any radical types. They discussed the many aspects on how we are loosing our freedoms and how the country is being bankrupt. They were great at being non partisan, yet I was glad to see they did an occasional mention in their dislike towards Obozo. They also discussed many of the new bills in legislation for passage such as G.I.V.E.. In other words there was an excellent attempt to help educate the crowd on what is going in case they missed it. And they went over key points in the constitution and handed out free copies of it.

I’m glad I went. I sent some pics to the action center.

Just listening to PIG Jay Severin on the radio and he is so pleased because he says there will be no lefty low lifes there. And that the crowds would be much bigger, but all the tea party supporters have to work unlike the lefty welfare cases. After all, these economy bleeders wouldn’t dare show up because that is what who they are protesting.

I think anyone should protest however they see fit for whatever causes and I commend them for it. But I (personally) can’t get past the fact that these protests represent the status quo of the two party system.

I may be in the minority in stating this. But, I firmly believe that we need to build our own messages and become strong as a group before we help other groups with their message. We have a lot of work to do and should focus on that, which is what I think murphy is referring to.

Maybe I am to idealistic. I don’t think we should just give our power away to any group that needs PUMA’s for bodies. We end up looking like we don’t have ideas or an agenda of our own, when we do.

I want to grow a movement too. We are. But this kind of stuff (tea parties) in my opinion is distracting to PUMA’s. I know I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about this.

——————-
I understand your point, and agree to an extent, but, I also believe if an action or movement is in alignment with our position/positions, I see no harm in joining that action. Organizing and coordinating an action oursleves could be more of a distraction, and dilution of focus and energy, than joining is one that’s already been organized.

30

taggles1 04.15.09 at 4:09 pm

Of course I agree with that Dances. How to decide which is in alignment or not, going by murphy’s definitions. I don’t think a republican lead protest is my cup of tea, for example, obviously some people do.

the tea parties are the antithesis to this statement:

We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.

31

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:10 pm

taggles, don’t listen to Jay Severin, your head will explode. PIG is an understatement.

As for the protesters, we ARE them.

PUMAs are at protests-not to work for Republicans, but to protest!

So many people are angry, and for so many good reasons.

The protests are being covered by major media outlets RIGHT NOW. They are on tv, radio and the internet
news outlets. Why is this a bad thing?

32

BigCatLover 04.15.09 at 4:11 pm

taggles1 04.15.09 at 3:59 pm
A caller on C-Span this morning said that protests like this that include all parties and non party affiliated – just citizens – are the way to begin a new Independent Party to run against the repubs and dems.

33

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:11 pm

and taggles take some pleasure in knowing that severin will die alone like a dog ;-)

34

taggles1 04.15.09 at 4:12 pm

Persophone, I think I will wait for a well organized PUMA protest. I really don’t want to help the status quo republicans and status quo democrats get re-elected.

35

taggles1 04.15.09 at 4:13 pm

The tea parties are run by well known republican hacks who brought us the Contract with America. They know what they are doing.

Persophone, you got the astroturfing about a new way forward, but not the tea parties????

36

NewOrleansPuma 04.15.09 at 4:14 pm

taggles: PumaPac has not organized a tea party. And these tea parties are in no way a distraction from what Murphy posted above. Individuals in this country will need more than one forum to express whatever they want to express. Idealism needs more than one forum on the ground given what is going on in this country under Obama.

37

DancesWithPumas 04.15.09 at 4:14 pm

There’s also something to be said for publicizing the fact that PUMA has the ability to get bodies out there, and that we’re action oriented. That alone adds to our power… as long as we identify as who we are: PUMAs

38

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:14 pm

the tea parties are the antithesis to this statement:

We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.
_______
taggles the middle class is being shook down and squeezed.
We’ve been robbed-the treasury has been looted.

I think the “tea party” theme is sort of silly, but it’s a unifying theme that resonated with a lot of people.

Social-Psyche 04.15.09 at 4:16 pm

Sorry, missed the first “h” in the Benson link:
http://editorialcartoonists.com/cartoon/display.cfm/69353

taggles1,

The tea parties are broader based and more sponstaneous than the MSM would have us believe. They might at least promote a healthy, positive response from people who’ve been sitting on the fence. Once people wake up, get out and receive information, such as what cjv tells us happened in Albany NY, they’re better able to grasp the PUMA agenda and to join here on a long-term basis. Volunteerism and activism are cumulative and contagious!

persephone, that is what they are protesting.

42

taggles1 04.15.09 at 4:19 pm

why would I be upset with you persophone. I posted in that thread:

I don’t know about anyone else, but as I see it, obots are criticizing RWers the same way RWers use to criticize libs during bush.

It is all so strange and reminiscent.

I guess puma’s were the only ones who really meant what they said for the past eight years.

Hooray for us!

and

and soupcity, don’t forget the RWers have selective memory. They act like they never ever used these tactics before. Like it’s something new!

It is completely partisan all the way around. Parties just switching off (depending on who’s in power), getting the sheeps to follow. It’s crazy!

that is why I reject both and just try to stick to what I believe is right. I don’t want to use the Republicans to meet an end goal, because we will do nothing but help the status quo keep the status quo.

43

BigCatLover 04.15.09 at 4:20 pm

The tea party theme is easily recognized and understood by all Americans because I think everyone learns about the original tea party in school, so It’s a symbol – not really silly. Most people are not really spilling tea, just like the women’s movement did not really burn bras. It’s a rallying symbol.

44

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:20 pm

they are protesting a multitude of things.
i saw all sorts of signs on blogs and on tv, and read a good report about a NY event above.

and if they are protesting taxes, well, count me in.

I paid a lot of taxes. No making work pay credit for me.
Federal income, MA income, sales tax, meals tax, real estate tax, excise tax.
Is my neighbor any better off? NO. My kids? NO.
Did I have much left to save for my retirement. HA!
But banks got paid. AIG got a pile. What was it-3 trillion total??
I did not sign up for that and neither did anyone I know.

Be happy people aren’t just rolling over, this is a good sign that there is REAL hope and we will get Obama the fuck out of the White House before he does irreparable damage to America.

Maybe folks don’t know how to articulate it but they know they are being screwed over and they’re taking to the streets.
They aren’t tools, they are patriots exercising a constitutional right.

Constitutional Party member or an anarchist…and everything in between feel strongly enough about something to get off their behinds and show up at a Tea Party or any other protest that says no in some way to Barack Obama and his cronies…both Republican and Democrat status quo people alike…then this is a sign that something or someone is waking up. The protests that should and I hope will occur in this country will become far more varied than this one and I say…Thank you God …thank you people…keep paying attention. Long live the right of free assembly of the people..long live the right of free speech..It is these very rights and others that in 3 months this administration has moved against even more powerfully than Bush did…and no surpise at that either…

I thought there was something more to this.

I hate getting into any debate especially since I need to get to other affiars that need attention before the day was over: but…

I did not get the impression that this was any typ of Repbulican front in the tea party I attended. It was grass roots by a citizen who feels similar as so many do with what is happening to our country. Speakers were regular people, folks who volunteered their time to share how their lives are being affected and to educate on many issues. A few speakers were war veterans, one an at home om and one businessman who spoke. Prior to the event they all sent their request tot he orgianizer to speak today. I didn’t see anything here that has anything to do with any party elitistism. He (the organizer) paid for this event out of his pcoket along with donations from the volunteers and anyone else that was willing to donate as the cost to have that space in Albany for a few hours wasn’t free. People from all walks of life were there.

I just don’t get why you feel that this was some Repuke event. It wasn’t. They were speaking against any and all poitician that is in our federal and state (NY is screwing us here) government.

I don’t know what else to say. What I do know is that when it comes to preserving my country, my bank account, my freedoms as I grew up to know and love, I will join with anyone to fight to save it. And when it’s PUMA, great. When it’s not, oh well, I’ll be there just the same.

Well, I’m overdosed with Fox tv so I keep turning to CNN for ‘the other side of the story’ and they are not covering the protests at all. How enlightening is that for the public?

65

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:45 pm

gaygal
I might not ever be able to support a party again.
When I checked that “unaffiliated” box I meant it!

66

persephone 04.15.09 at 4:46 pm

big cat that’s odd since CNN has it all over their website:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/15/tea.parties/index.html

67

gay gal 04.15.09 at 4:49 pm

When I voted for a third party in the last three elections, I meant it, too, persephone. But after some thoughtful reflection, I do wish I would have voted for Gore in 2000. Bush was the propped up puppet, that year, however.

68

BigCatLover 04.15.09 at 4:51 pm

CNN now has Paul Begala on who wrote a column today on the tea parties which he says are being run by media rich plutocrats (he means Fox tv) but they are not showing the crowds that are showing up to protest (that’s what I meant).

69

NewOrleansPuma 04.15.09 at 4:51 pm

gaygal: For the record …I support no one who has played Obamas game..in either party. I support no one who played Bush’s game in either party. If a third party arises it will be made up of people like me and you and all kinds of other surprising perhaps combinations. Ralph Nader has run for years on this concept…for example. Who knows yet what will occur? but the time to act against Obama in the streets when one can is whenever there are enough people moved to do so. This was one example of many…I sincerely hope.

Any one who thinks the Republican Party can steer a huge group of people who take to the streets to protest is in for rude shock in the future (assuming this movement grows). Once they are stirred up, no repub I know can steer them towards a certain candidate unless they believe that candidate is completely different than ones in the past.

——-
I have been workin’ and didn’t get to read the rest of the posts after this one but wanted you to know Taggles that protesting today is about what some of us do believe, and doesn’t have to have anything to do with being PUMAs or not.

I don’t protest as a PUMA, I protest as a woman that is against what is happening and my sign will state what bothers me.

I don’t stand on a street corner to be part of the Republican movement, I am doing the same as many Republican’s, Dems, Independents and voters that don’t care what party it represents.

As much as I adore you and all the PUMAs, I am about what I believe in first and don’t think it has anything to do with distraction from the PUMA movement.

gaygirl,

Yes, propped-up puppets is what both Bush II and Bush III are (though sometimes POTUS The Perp. is more like Reagan II).

More power to patriots like you who vote for independent candidates– independent being my way of saying not connected to the duopoly party.

Numbering pol. parties is one of my peeves. I know you’re not responsible for the problem, gaygirl. IBTP and the MSM.

There are no such political 3rd parties because there aren’t any 1st, 4th, 5th, 10th… parties, numbered by rank. The phrase “third party” is a legal term referring to minor parties in a contract, i.e. a partner or other individual with fewer rights and responsibilities in the legal contract. (EX: you might use 3rd-party software plug-ins with your image editing program; and a “co-respondent” in a divorce was an old term for adulterer as a third party to the marriage, yikes!)

Instead of numbering political parties like the duopoly and their media clowns do, let’s just mention those parties by name, which is informative as well as fair.

From the WSJ:
Tax Day Becomes Protest Day

“…But it’s more likely that the tea-party movement will have an impact on the 2010 and 2012 elections, and perhaps beyond.

What’s most striking about the tea-party movement is that most of the organizers haven’t ever organized, or even participated, in a protest rally before. General disgust has drawn a lot of people off the sidelines and into the political arena, and they are already planning for political action after today.”

She’s pragmatic and action oriented. Read Sec of State Clinton’s ideas for dealing with the Somali pirates (from the link above posted by persophone):

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday the State Department will work with shippers and insurers to improve their defenses against pirates, part of a diplomatic initiative to thwart attacks on commercial ships off the Somali coast.

“These pirates are criminals; they are armed gangs on the sea. And those plotting attacks must be stopped,” Clinton told reporters at the State Department.

Clinton did not suggest using military force against the pirates, although she mentioned “going after” pirate bases in Somalia, as authorized by the United Nations several months ago.

“We need to bring 21st-century solutions to bear,” she said.

In a question-and-answer session with reporters, Clinton said it may be possible to stop boat-building companies from doing business with the pirates. One element of her initiative, she said, is to “explore ways to track and freeze pirate assets.”

The other element of the initiative include calling for immediate meetings of an international counterpiracy task force to expand naval coordination against pirates. She said federal agencies would meet Friday to review the problem and consider potential responses.

The administration plans to send an envoy to a Somali donors conference scheduled for next week in Brussels and will attempt to organize meetings with officials of Somalia’s transitional government as well as regional leaders in its semiautonomous Puntland.

“The Democrats do NOT represent us! The Republicans do NOT represent us!” In essence he is so right. Both parties have been taking us to the cleaners.

Here’s the viedeo. The link will take you to the site where the other video is also there with the one I am in. Not the point, but they also did a decent job giving an objective report. For once a news station gave essentially an objective report……

Great post Murphy. I couldn’t go to a tea party as I’m suffering with a severe sore throat and cold. I had a group that I was going with so that is totally disappointing.
Have you seen this? I want the fraud gone NOW!!
HR20-New Mother’s Mandated Mental Health Test-JUST PASSED HOUSE!
A sweeping government policy for all new births in the United States has just passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate. The Mother’s Act, if passed, will mandate that all new mothers be screened by means of a list of subjective questions that will determine if each mother is mentally fit to take their newborn home from the hospital. Just imagine that after your child is born, you are told that you can’t take them home since a multiple choice questionnaire wasn’t answered correctly. Just imagine being told that the only way you can take your child home is if you or your spouse goes into treatment or on anti-depressants which we know causes psychosis, delusions, and even homicidal thoughts. It just doesn’t make sense. Unfortunately, this bill is on a fast track–No public debate, no public disclosure of the broad impact on our society and that is why we need you to act now!
The Mother’s Act violates our Constitutional right to privacy and your right to liberty and it is just outright dangerous. That is why we need you to help stop this. We urgently need you to call and email each Senator on the HELP Committee and tell them you STRONGLY OPPOSE the MOTHER’S ACT and that you are OUTRAGED that there was NO public debate or disclosure on the impact this would have on our society as a whole.

I can see the value of follow-up in terms of post-partum depression in mothers, but, since men seem to kill, maim, mutilate mothers and children, it seems to me that they are the ones who should be tested for being allowed to live in the home with children and mothers / wives/girlfriends/partners.

ladyhawkke,

Send a friend/family member out to your local herb shop or health food store etc. to get you some Cherry Bark & Slippery Elm Bark Tea. Blends e.g. Yogi Tea’s “Throat Comfort” and similar “Throat Care” herbal teas usually contain one or both as active ingredients. Cherry bark alleviates the pain and soreness. Slippery elm soothes with a protective layer in the same way honey does.

Then have your own tea party and drink to regaining your health. Get well!

Why am I doing this? Because I want to and I think it is interesting. I will go through the total of 3017 and I may have missed a few because either their name is not obviously female or initials were used.

Me thinks PUMAs are individuals and may have interests and causes outside of PUMA as cjv and bj articulated well. I just prefer a disciplined approach and dont think we should coopt all interests and causes under PUMA when the alignment can not be established without smearing or contradicting our true common movement objectives. The only way to combat Somali Pirates is to permit the Captain and at least three higher responsible members, of his crew to be armed or/and within easy reach of a gun and ammunition and even machine guns.

The Captain and his crew should have the right to protect themselves against possibly murderers; there is probably already a Nautical law stating that the Captain has the right to defend himself and his crew, on the high seas, and that law probably just has to be reactivated…

Local news now has on one of the teaparties across the Lake…they are dumping tea in Lake Ponchatrain and one of the protestors has a sign of Nancy Pelosi and Barack…which has Nancy saying…Hey..there’s a taxpayer…Barack reponds..Quick …get their money! A very very large crowd here.

135

NewOrleansPuma 04.15.09 at 7:17 pm

On the other hand there was not one teaparty within the city limits of New Orleans….

gay gal suggests,
Hey, how about we call our third eye our Independent eye.

What if the third eye needs glasses? Does that mean it will have to wear a monocle? That’s so Erich von Stroheim! The third eye clearly would insist on wearing its very own Independent Lens.

Problem is, my other two eyes will bitch mightily about missing something. They start to roll like mad whenever that happens.

Jennifor, FOX news is during their job: Their doesn’t seem to be any shortage of media coverage. I lurked and actually turned on the BSMSM.

“Thanks, Corporate Media, we couldn’t control the people without you.” That’s a great T-shirt for protests by the way.

146

jenniforhillary 04.15.09 at 7:30 pm

Go Fox news…..

this is my post at greta: I live in houston, texas and I am so proud at the turn out and the quality of people who attended. These are good Americans–white, black, hispanic, asian, women, men, children and animal, all ages–who are fed up with the LIES of the obama administration and the failure of ALL elected officials to do the right thing. CNN should be impeached, along with the entire obama adminstration (except for Hillary Rodham Clinton–who should then step in and take her rightful job as POTUS). Nancy Pelosi, Donna Brazille, Harry Reid, and Barack Hussein Obama should be ashamed, impeached, and imprisoned. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

147

Sunshinelvr 04.15.09 at 7:48 pm

Over 300 people turned out ( very good turn-out for a town of around 6000!) There were speeches urging all Americans to write their Congressman, become & stay involved in what is going on in our coutry. Speeches about the current administration dis-honoring America and the Constitution. There were patriotic songs. (there was crying (by me) I just always tear up when there is a big beautiful American Flag waving in the breeze and many voices are singing “Oh say, Can you see” ) (My kids have always laughed at Mom for this.)There were leaflets passed around stating that we, as Americans, vow to make the President and Congress answerable to WE the People. We control it, We own it, We need to work it! There was also one going around that said “I do not support Obama. I never have, and I never will. I will do everything in my power to have him re-called, impeached or found in-eligible. He is not proud to be American as evidenced by his actions and words. We must take America back.”
I don’t have pictures as of right now, but my friend took plenty of them and she prominses as soon as possible. I didn’t agree with everything they said, but they kept it mostly focused on being American and making Government responsible. My signs, (I had two) said “Bankers run or government & Obama is their puppet” and “Bail out Main street, not Wall street.” Both had pumapac.org written in orange. I am glad I went. My first protest rally ever!!

148

hillstheone 04.15.09 at 7:49 pm

Krugman’s blog today, I liked his “Can I just say?” question:

“Brad DeLong lists three possible explanations for the Obama administration’s bank policy, and expresses angst that officials don’t seem to be clear about what they’re actually up to. Matthew Yglesias points out that the president seemed to offer a fourth narrative yesterday. I’d add that in the past we’ve heard yet another narrative — that we can’t imitate Sweden because we have too many banks — that happens to be all wrong.

> > > Can I say that this very proliferation of narratives is disturbing?

I don’t want to claim moral equivalence with the Bushies, who were utterly cynical about such things, but the ever-shifting rationales for an unchanging policy do bring back unhappy memories of the selling of the 2001 tax cut, and for that matter — again, no moral equivalence! — of the selling of the Iraq War.”

~ ~ ~

“It’s painfully clear that Obama has continued precisely the same old failed methods of the Bush era (denial of reality, cronyism/corruption, incompetence) that Obama himself was fighting so hard against during the election campaign.”

Ladyhawke (107)- I agree with you completely. Before a woman is discharged from the hospital after giving birth, her doctor already examines her, talks with her, etc. If there were a good way to predict who would get postpartum depression one day after giving birth, then it would already be done. The multiple choice test will be like the questions they ask you when you check your luggage at the airport. (‘Did a terrorist put a bomb in your bag?”, “Are you a terrorist?”, etc.) Congress should spend its time working on real problems and stop grandstanding. If we gave women and men, whether they were having children or not, free mental health care, we would solve most of the problem.

Caught a few minutes of C-Span’s coverage of our SOS’s press conf on piracy. The meeting looked standing-room-only with people lined up on the side aisles.

She was able to think on her feet and speak without teleprompting because she had the facts at her fingertips! Hot Damn.

She took questions that appeared to be unscripted, i.e. reporters were framing Qs based on what she had just said; then she gave straight answers that likewise sounded off-the-cuff yet informed and informative.

Based on what I saw, it wasn’t rushed or overly repetitive either.

My only quibble (not sure if this is with her official statement, or due to the usual doublespeak from POTUS The Perp, or the MSM reportage of it) is that having a U.S. Navy escort does amount to military force. The rescue of Captain Phillips was a use of force by necessity in an emergency.

Hey pumas…Back from the Bangor Tea Party. I estimate 300 people. I think I spoke with every one of them. Orange puma shirt, Hillary pin with a teabag hanging from it, and my fight the oligarchy sign. I passed out dozens of miniature versions of my sign with pumapac.org on them. There was not one sign with obama’s name on it. Most of the signs were against the bailouts. Many American and Don’t Tread On Me flags. Most people no longer identify with a party, two thirds lapsed republicans. Lots of thumbs up and honking from passing cars. My friend, a disgruntled national delegate, worked the crowd pushing the national campaign to have people change to unaffiliated on May 31. She was so pumped by the response she called into the Howie Carr show on the drive home. A good, proud to be an American day.

164

mountainsong 04.15.09 at 8:45 pm

What the HELL did the Obamas do to EARN 2.7 million dollars in 2008???????

Obamas report $2.7 million in income for 2008

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090416/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_tax_returns

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, millionaires from his best-selling books, made $2.7 million last year and paid just under one-third of their adjusted income in federal taxes. While the income, mostly his, was far more than the U.S. median household income of about $50,000, it was quite a decrease from the $4.2 million the Obamas made in 2007.

K, I’m a dumbchit~~~what’s the difference between him and George Bush?

165

Silence Dogood 04.15.09 at 8:46 pm

Went to one in NJ. Will try to get pics out. Let me tell you there were plenty of moderate Democrats there, plenty of libertarians, and conservatives. People were saying conservative instead of republican, because republicans have been a party to wasteful spending as much as wasteful democrats. And many were mad at those Republicans like Arlen Specter who appears to be bought by the Obama Administration.

Everyone I met was very nice. No Obots. We had a good time expressing our 1st amendment rights… a peaceful exchange of ideas. Unlike the violence that goes along with the Obama rallies.

What it comes down to is… all of us want lower taxes. We know how to spend our money better than the govt. And make our tax dollars work better. Instead of welfare… workfare and job training.

A friend of my sister’s… single Mom with kids. Went from K-mart to medical tech to more than that. She got training and assistance for the kids while she was learning from the State. Became an ultrasound tech… company paid for more training. In two years she went from 20K at K-mart to 35K and now 55K+ with all the extra training. And she’s thinking about more training.

This is what our local, state, and federal govt needs to do more of. She’s happy. Her kids are happier, and she’s going to pay more in taxes than the cost of the state grant for the training. Probably a lot more.

I call that a win-win. Everything Obama is doing is lose-lose, except for advancing his and Pelosi’s and Reid’s causes.

Rick Perry to Tea Party demonstrators “”There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. I had a friend send the picture’s that I took to the actioncenter… The bad news… I took about 50 pic’s… She sent them all so, maybe by next week they will all be loaded up… We had 500 plus people show up and participate… Everyone was soooooo wonderful and kind… We had our Santa Ana Winds which kicked up to 45-55 miles per hour… WOW!!!!!! Trying to hold on to my sign was a challenge… I also, spread the word about Puma and got alot of positive feedback… Will be looking for new member’s very soon… I have to say more Dems (who were Dems before) outnumbered any other party… But, today it was not about Party…It was about AMERICA AND HER PEOPLE!!!! IT was Wonderful…Hope everyone enjoy’s the picture’s…

Well, I went to the tea party in West Palm Beach, vacation home of the Banksters. One sign of my sign had a picture of a pig eating ham, headlined “Yes-It is WRONG!” and on the other side it said, “BAILOUT Health Education Environment IN-FRA-STRUC-TURE How about the American People!”

I stayed only about an hour because it was too Republican. I was not quite a fit because I have a bigger problem with how it is being spent than how much is collected. There were hundreds of people there. But not much diversity.

Taxpayers Storm ‘Luxury Lavatory’ at State House

“About seventy women and forty men” visited the Senate President and Speaker of the House’s new taxpayer-funded “luxury lavatory” at the State House to relieve themselves all at once today, sources tell NowHampshire.com.

After protesting the federal government’s spending policies in Concord during the noon hour many of the taxpayers needed to relieve themselves. So Republican state Rep. Fran Wendelboe invited anyone who had to go to the third floor bathroom, which cost the state $72,000 and is seen by many in New Hampshire as an unnecessary extravagance in the middle of an economic recession.

The Pacific Northwest had a lot of Tea Parties today. The one I went to surprised the heck out of me because I had expected apathy and instead encountered a couple hundred sign-carrying people.

A Republican woman and I talked quite a while and agreed on most points, including that people need to be less divided and come together to form a more powerful movement. She & her husband were business owners. A young kid who looked college-aged (& liberal) & was holding a sign up about the bailouts overheard our conversation & said “right-on!”

I didn’t stay long but I drove my kids by there later so they could see what democracy in action looks like.

202

Casper Cat 04.15.09 at 10:28 pm

hillstheone…. You are right on… That is what it was like here today in Riverside, Ca… “form a more powerful movement” Well, that is what we are doing….. Glad to hear you took the kids there too.. Great experience… And, priceless..

203

mountainsong 04.15.09 at 10:28 pm

I stopped by the Tea Party tax protest here where I live on my way home from work. People are upset about the inability to pay taxes due to job losses and the ppor economy. BUT they are way more upset over Geithner overseeing the IRS. IRS employees are held to such hig standards their jobs are often on the line.
Geithner goes unpunsished and is allowed to get by with saying his failure to pay $34,000 in Medicare and Social Security taxes between 2001 and 2004 was an “oversight”, an “embarrassing mistake.”
And they/we are upset that this man is giving away hard earned money from people who DO pay their taxes in his Stimulus spending.
A similar “mistake” by one of his subordinates at IRS would swiftly be terminated.
This extreme hypocrisy, representative of the entire Obama administration is just outright immoral and illegal.
Hopefully, this “Tea Party” will live more than just one day, and spread across the country.
How the hell did Obama, who couldn’t win American Idol or Dancing with the Stars get elected POTUS. If I HAD voted for him, I’d be red-faced embarrassed to say so.
The puppy I just rescued is smarter than he is.

204

Lin4Hill 04.15.09 at 10:39 pm

It is my hope that the tea parties become a juggernaut that gives the millions of frustrated, but silent Americans, courage to shout their outrage at what has been done to this country’s economy. It reminds us that our nation was forged with a resounding, “Hell, no!” And we can do it again.

Tea Parties are for everyone. They are not run by anyone. Only the people who think the U.S. is going in the wrong direction should go to a tea party. That is a heck of a lot of people.

We’re up late tonight with the tea parties. I, along with the landlady, went to one about 10 miles from my house. We only had about 2,000 total, so it wasn’t any big shakes compared to most around the country. However, it WAS really good. Not republican, not democrat, not ANY party. We had NO elected leaders speaking. We had speakers who were dems, some repub, some independent, and some libertarian. It wasn’t sponsored by ANYBODY or ANYTHING. The bad part was that they had it set up so that we were facing right into the direct bright sun, so I couldn’t get many photos or mini-videos once it got well underway. However, here is a link to some of the photos and mini-videos I took there:

223

henry 04.15.09 at 11:26 pm

Sorry dances but she has blown me away. I have felt reduced to nothing by another persons voice only once before and that was live hearing Jeff Buckley do Hallelujah in the east village in the 90’s. I am knocked down by this woman’s voice. Perhaps because until yesterday I hated the song.My dad thinks I am just in love with the fact that a middle aged woman dared to go on a stage and sing her heart out and throw everyone for a loop,

Woooooooooooohooooooooo, just got back from a tea party and had dinner with Goandersen. We had such fun. Go went to a tea party with another PUMA from another blog and brought her to the tea party in my little town.
I was worried that it would be 3 PUMAs protesting with some perv Republican, but there were hundreds of people there. People with signs on everything crappy Obama represents.
It was wonderful, only had one woman flip us off in front of where we were standing, flipping the bird and yelling her head off for about 2 minutes while the crowd and the three of us made so much noise it muffled her rant. Go turned around and mooned her…fully clothed. It was great.
When ever the crowd got into chanting something that sounded too Republican, like, “Honk for freedom”…we would start laughing and chant at the same time, “Honk for Hillary”. People noticed our signs and were happy we were pissed at Obama too. One guy said, is this the liberal part of the group, we said, “Hell ya!”
I was so proud of my little town, they represented and we had lots of support from people driving past……..about 40% honked and gave a thumbs up!
Haven’t checked the photos yet, Go took more photos and we will turn over some to the action center.
What a great time we had.

freddiebrown 04.16.09 at 12:25 am

Fred and I just got back from the San Diego TEA party. It was great… I am soooo glad I went. There were over 3,000 people. Yes, it was huge – cars, trucks big and small were honking like crazy. Lots of cars , bikes had signs or were waving huge flags.. it was almost like a carnival except it was serious matter. One lady was wearing a toilet seat over her head an on the lid it says “stop flushing away my money”. There were quite a few anti Obama signs…It was just good to see that all the issues we talked about here were represented – well except misogny. Several people stopped to take pictures of my sign “Congress = Chains you can believe in”. I was there for 3 hours and left when my fingers could not take it anymore – it was a cold San Diego evening.

I am very glad to have taken part in this and I wish more Pumas did because it was something to experience. I did not see any Republicans trying to coerce anybody and all the messages were stuff that all of us are concerned about – we just took it to the streets.

This was held at the main post office which traditionally “opened” till 12 midnight to receive tax returns and there were long long lines of cars
Will upload pics tomorrow.. got to go eat dinner now.

we are FOR a strong social net.
We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.

If you don’t mind, part of the reason why this country is in the pickle it is in is because too many have become dependent on the government to provide for them. Government produces nothing. It takes from some to give to others. IMO, especially in the past 2 decades, more people have been scamming the taxpayer via government entitlements than bankers ever have. I see it with my coworkers, I see it within my own extended family.

We have spent close to $11 trillion to eradicate poverty in this country since 1964, with Johnson’s Great Society and the percentage of people in ‘poverty’, is still the same as in 1964.

The government can’t take care of you and make you prosperous. They keep you dependent. Punishing the producers with higher taxes is not the answer either.

We as a people must take care of each other within our own families and communities. The working poor make as much as those who sit on their behinds and receive checks, but yet, they still are able to reach into their pockets and tithe their churches, give to food banks, raise money for any number of causes and they don’t bitch and whine because they don’t see themselves as victims.
Compare the politicizing of Katrina vs the same/if not worse devastation of the poorest state in the union, Mississippi – who, as a whole, gave more to charity in 2006, than any rich east coast state. (look up Arthur Brooks research on ‘Who Really Cares’…John Stossel did a lesser investigation and came up with the same sort of results.)

You want a strong social net? Rise up and make one yourself. You are strong and smart and more than likely have a better system of accountability and screening than a large lumbering corrupt ever-expanding inefficient government machine. I see that you raise money. Put that money where your mouth is and start a women’s shelter.

That is what an American does.

257

Dragonfly 04.16.09 at 1:18 am

“We’re not against government spending: We’re against corruption and waste, and we are FOR a strong social net.
We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.
We’re not against government: We’re against government By the Few FOR the Few, and we are FOR government By the People FOR the People.
We’re not against Democrats: We’re against cronyism and we are FOR the protection of democratic principles.
We’re not against Republicans: We’re against corruption and degradation of the Constitution, and we are FOR Equal Rights for ALL American citizens.
We’re not against men: We’re against woman-lynching, discrimination, and we are FOR women.”

Rock on Murphy! Love it.

A friend of mine went to a tea party in Michigan – her mom wore a cute hat decorated with tea-bag tassels tagling from it and had tea bag wrappers for the hat band. My friend’s sign said “What happened to ‘pay as you go’????” and on the other side “The mainstream media is the Matrix”, which I thought was hilarious.

258

Obama ‘unaware’ of the tea partys.

funny and good links. This is so typical and illustrates the arrogance I don’t like about him – he does not acknowledge or really HEAR opposing views. He’s perfect for this age of media madness – stay on message, don’t really communicate anything worth reading/hearing.

Dragonfly 04.16.09 at 1:44 am

I remained on the mailing list for The New Agenda though I don’t like the way its leadership treated BJ Kling, and here’s what was in my inbox, which I thought people would be interested in. As a mother of two small children, this really bothers me. Okay, I am not into fast food, but lemme say “I’m lovin’ it” to McD’s and am further resolved to avoid Burger King:

” BURGER KING GONE WILD?

And in a prime time commercial for our young children to see?

The New Agenda says:
No how! No way! NO SALE!

In the 30-second TV commercial that began airing last week, the Burger King performs a take-off on Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” the original lyrics to which were “I like big butts… with that butt you got me so horny.” In the commercial, the lyrics are:

Burger King:

I like square butts and I cannot lie,
Squid and Sea Star can’t deny.
When a sponge walks in, four corners in his pants,
like he got phone book implants,
the crowd shouts, all the ladies stare.
Man those pants are square!
Swinging through the seaweed tangles
is a butt with sharp right angles.
Now, SpongeBob,
I wanna get with ya,
‘cause you’re making me richer.
Burger King wants me to seal the deal:
99 cents get a toy and a kids meal.

Burger Customer:

Booty is booty.

In the video that accompanies the lyric, women shake their booties while standing on a sponge:

The Burger King measures the width of a woman’s behind:

And when the King measures the squareness of a woman’s behind, look who’s dancing to the beat in the background:

Lest the connection to a beloved children’s character be too subtle, here’s the next scene:

The Chicago Sun-Times quoted a Burger King representative as saying the ad is “meant to appeal to the adults who take their families to Burger King restaurants.”

Oh really? So what of the children who see the ads running in prime time and may form a SpongeBob/booty association? What of the boys who absorb the message that female bodies are to be measured, not cherished? What of the girls who absorb the message that they are their butts? Do we just explain to children that they are not actually the target audience for the commercial? Ludicrous.

Take Action:

1) Write or call Burger King corporate headquarters. Tell them that unless women are not people, this commercial violates their Corporate Social Responsibility Mission Statement: Fundamental respect for all people, and our planet, guides our corporate conscience. Tell them you will not visit their restaurants until they withdraw the ad.

Burger King Corporation
5505 Blue Lagoon Dr.
Miami, FL 33126
Consumer Relations (305) 378-3535 Staffed M-F, 9am–5pm EST
Email Investor Relations at investor@whopper.com

2) Write or call Nickelodeon, which bills itself as “the only network that puts kids first.” Tell them that to profit by teaching children to objectify women is wrong, and that you will purchase no more SpongeBob merchandise until the offensive ad stops running.

Nickelodeon
1515 Broadway
New York, NY 10036
(212) 258-6000

3) Forward this action alert to a friend.”

Actually, it’s “brava” not bravo…Murphy’s very much an “-a” not an “-o”
—tsk-tsk! You should know that. :)

Glad I missed this useless day’s posting. Criminy…and Cannonfire is hopelessly arcane this week.

Luckily, Tn Guerilla women has a VERY useful and relevant post up about a REAL protest with DEADLY REAL consequences.

The women in Afghanistan have been braving rabid bearded men throwing stones at them for protesting their country’s making rape a man’s right by law.

264

Zee 04.16.09 at 2:06 am

#14 hills, of course we should still read Paul. He’s been right and has spoken up against the norm for years now.

And he was right today. How many “grassroots” protests have you seen promoted on tv, and SPONSORED by anchor personalities?

Thought so. Geeeeeeeee….I wish we’d have had nonstop media coverage 6 years ago with our tax day protest when the illegal “pre-emptive” war was first waged against a country that did not attack us.

Oh, wellllllllllll. Even NOW didn’t get coverage for their MILLION WOMEN march on D.C. And unlike the oft-mentioned “million man march” we actually had over a million!

A-fucking-men! Testify, sister!

Keep doing what you do best…expose the bs.

Anyone who heard you on Tuesday should have a clue.

Enough of PUMAs being hijacked. I’m solidly in your corner.

To be clear, I’m allllll for rightwingers organizing protests and more power to them. But the crap you are describing is all too real and we should have nothing to do with their lame line of reasoning and their POISON. Wouldn’t it be nice if you were MSM instead of these vile spewers like Jay Severin and GLENN BECK, whom wayyyyyyy too many posting here swoon over (gag).

“I understand your point, and agree to an extent, but, I also believe if an action or movement is in alignment with our position/positions, I see no harm in joining that action.”

Pigs who sneer about lefties have ZERO alignment with us, unless you see us as rightwing…which may fauxgressives do, from the nonstop invasion of the original concept by rightwingers with their own agenda.

The tea parties were a rightwing creation and promotion. Facts. We might wish they’d been bipartisan or nonpartisan, but that is unfortunately not the case.

268

Zee 04.16.09 at 2:30 am

the tea parties are the antithesis to this statement:

We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.
=================

Again, testify, taggles! Though apparently those here either don’t get it or pretend not to.

Those promoting, instigating and activating these protests are the bonehead antitax people that the rightwingers have been milking forever.

They are NOT the types that understand taxes are how we pay for wonderful things like public schools and transportation. They’re the neanderthal types who holler “sooooooocialist! Obama is a socialist!!!!
We’re all doooooommmmmed to re-education camps!!!!!!!”

269

Zee 04.16.09 at 2:32 am

that was taggles #30….her comments #35 are also gospel:

“The tea parties are run by well known republican hacks who brought us the Contract with America. They know what they are doing.”

I’m only sorry she had to fight the good fight alone today, with no one at her back.

Oh, what a disappointment. Come on. A bajillionith “third” party?

The repukes took over an existing party. That’s what we need to do. At the primary level.

It can be done. The tirrrrrred old yadda yadda about 15 hundred “new” (cough) “third” parties is pointless.

#67 glad to see some remorse.

Bush was propped up in 2000…part of that propping up was Nader’s lie that Bush and Gore were “the same.” How true was that?

So sad that those who want progressive change are just as easy to manipulate as those on the opposite spectrum.

274

Zee 04.16.09 at 2:42 am

275

Zee 04.16.09 at 2:45 am

#71 Big Cat Lover, the last eight years has proven NOTHING else but that the media can steer the dupes on either end of the political spectrum.

If they decide on Mittwit or Newt “blowjob” Gingrich, we may need to flee the country, because that’s who would be installed.

Zee: Bravo here is used as an interjection in the English Lanugage and as such bravo is the accepted form.
Since I am speaking English and since interjections are not in and of themselves connected to the rest of the meaning of the sentence relative to bravo of what sex..i.e. this is not Italian….brava is not in fact what is appropriate here.

If Murphy begins to sing opera and if I think her performance is splendid…perhaps I will say brava…but I doubt it.

And this …I did not expect you to know. I was correct.

If you really wanted to make a useful.relevant point…youshould have noted that the standard punctuation
for an interjection such as this should have been an exclamation point.

Good night Zee…you need sleep…

Theses Afghan women are so brave. My heart goes out to them. There is a mention in the article that the law (allowing wives to be raped) may be revised as it is not yet in their books:

“The young women stepped off the bus and moved toward the protest march just beginning on the other side of the street when they were spotted by a mob of men.

“Get out of here, you whores!” the men shouted. “Get out!”

The women scattered as the men moved in.

“We want our rights!” one of the women shouted, turning to face them. “We want equality!”

The women ran to the bus and dived inside as it rumbled away, with the men smashing the taillights and banging on the sides.

“Whores!”

But the march continued anyway. About 300 Afghan women, facing an angry throng three times larger than their own, walked the streets of the capital on Wednesday to demand that Parliament repeal a new law that introduces a range of Taliban-like restrictions on women, and permits, among other things, marital rape.”

the tea parties are the antithesis to this statement:

We’re not against taxes: We’re against taxing the people to enrich the few, and we are FOR taxing the people for the prosperity of the PEOPLE.

Again, testify, taggles! Though apparently those here either don’t get it or pretend not to.

======================

Zee, let me ask you…. Do you practice trying to offend and be-little people and their opinions, or does it just come naturally? In your mind, apparently the only valid/right opinion is yours and those who agree with yours. I am not offended or mad at you, because I don’t chose to be-little people, even if I disagree. People can disagree, but diplomacy goes a lot further than sarcasm.

You are right, cjv. These women are brave beyond words. At the risk of their very lives, they are trying to improve the world that they, their daughters, mothers and sisters live in. These brave ladies deserve a bow! I believe they have more courage than our CIC.

We have spent close to $11 trillion to eradicate poverty in this country since 1964, with Johnson’s Great Society and the percentage of people in ‘poverty’, is still the same as in 1964.

————————–
Got a link on this?

AND THIS

Compare the politicizing of Katrina vs the same/if not worse devastation of the poorest state in the union, Mississippi – who, as a whole, gave more to charity in 2006, than any rich east coast state. (look up Arthur Brooks research on ‘Who Really Cares’…John Stossel did a lesser investigation and came up with the same sort of results.)

This is drivil I have heard from the right wing nuts for YEARS, the same rhetoric repeated over and over, John (lesser)Stossel is a creep and and a Republican tool. I am sick to death of this crap on Puma… knock it off!

Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”–symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up–when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com.

On Wednesday, CNSNews.com inspected the pediment embedded in the wall at the back of the stage in Gaston Hall, where Obama delivered his speech. The letters “IHS” were not to be found. They appeared to be shrouded with a triangle of black-painted plywood.

Pictures of the wooden pediment prior to Obama’s speech show the letters “IHS in gold. Many photos posted on the Internet of other events at Gaston Hall show the letters clearly.

#285HPBoston: …You have nailed it here…re the Jesuits at Georgetown and elsewhere…They are cowardly curs and have been for quite a while..for the most part.

They are not fit to kiss the hem of the Afghan women’s discarded trash heap burkhas…Neither are they fit to walk behind the women and men who stood up and still do for their children abused by miscreant priests…and few of them in this century could not begin to match the courage of the thousands of women over time in the Catholic Church who served and serve the least of their brethern on this earth.
I will make sure that this episode if it is not yet viral within Catholic web circles becomes so…let their donors as those of Notre Dame know what they are willing to do for the sake of the secular state. They need to be surpressed…but I know of few bishops who themselves have the moral courage to stand up and say so or act to have that done…
And regarding your last item in your 289…I have long since held that if this piece of flotsam holds any religion at all..which I do not require him or anyone else to do…but which if you assert it than do it…it is that of the literal minded Moslems…

Clearly…this event galls me without a gall bladder!

NOP, yes where is my damn gall bladder when I need it!! I have so much gall in my heart I will need my heart stones removed!
I have said I am not a religious person, but I damn well respect others. You can be respectful by saying NOTHING!
You can as a leader of MY WONDERFUL COUNTRY, show respect by not bowing to a sovereign of a terrorist nation. You must be humble and respectful of AMERICA!
What freaking rock did they dig this abomination of a dork out from under? I can not abide the sight of him nor do I.
Where are the REAL Americans, the ones who profess to love this country, where are the “MEN OF GOD” who profess to love and lead the least of us?? WHERE???? UP OBAMA ASS!!!

Child abuse spikes as U.S. economy flounders

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090416/ts_nm/us_usa_childabuse

BOSTON (Reuters) – One 4-month-old baby was shaken so violently she needed surgery. Another 3-week-old suffered fractured ribs from abuse at home. A 9-year-old diabetic boy stopped receiving proper treatment for his condition.

Those cases reported by Boston hospitals are part of a spike in child abuse in United States during a recession that has driven some families to the brink and overwhelmed cash-strapped child-protection agencies.

“In the last three months we have twice as many severe inflicted injury cases as we did in the three months the previous year,” said Allison Scobie, program director of the Child Protection Team at Boston’s Children’s Hospital.

Typically, her hospital handles about 1,500 such cases a year. That rose to 1,800 last year.

“We’re finding that it is directly attributable to what is happening economically,” she said. “Many of the hospitals around here report an increase of 20 to 30 percent of requests for consultation regarding suspected child maltreatment.”

Many cases bear the imprint of economic troubles, like a 9-year-old diabetic boy hospitalized after his mother, a single parent, could no longer afford insurance co-payments needed to treat his disease. She left him home alone for long stretches on days when he required medical attention.
