There’s A New Girl In Town

by murphy on April 7, 2009

in open thread,PUMAsphere,Women Who Smoke,Year of the Puma 2009

Great news! Some of THE best Puma bloggers have joined together and launched a new website/blog. It’s called Widdershins. Their About page tells us:

“Widdershins means to take a course opposite that of the sun, going counterclockwise, left hand-wise, or to circle an object, by always keeping it on the left.

The term “widdershins” was especially common in Lowland Scots, and was known in Scottish Gaelic as tuathal, or “left-hand-wise.” It uses the same root as tuath meaning countryside, originally tribal-landfolkpeople.

“Merlin says that one shouldn’t go widdershins around the mistletoe lest one end up in the Fairy realm.”

Ok — I am HOOKED! Perpetually on the left of every question and pointed by the Druid Merlin toward Fairy Land?? Count me IN!

Not to mention that their writers include ardent feminists and all-around ASS-kicking original Pumas like Taggles, LadyBoomerNYC, MadamaB, and GaryChapelHill.

This is GREAT news and I am so pleased to see the phoenix Widdershins rising up.

I don’t get it…
is the ny pumas for women’s rights separate from the pumapac ny group…or has he new group/leadership abandoned the pumapac ny group?

3

murphy 04.07.09 at 10:54 pm

i do not know dwp — i imagine they havent abandoned them — i’m guessing it’s more of a shakeup-not-really-sure-what-to-do thing.

there was a really unpleasant break-up between most of the writers at widdershins and their old home . . .

but I bet the women at widdershins would be more than happy to answer the question.

Saw a great T-shirt today. “Where will I spend eternity? Where will you spend reality”. I guess it depends on if one counts time clockwise or counterclockwise.

5

murphy 04.07.09 at 11:03 pm

is reality eternity?

i wish it were, then I could live forever and find out.

Another brilliant statement by our leader

The United States is not a nation of Christians, Jews or muslims….we are a nation of aaaghh
Citizens. Wow a nation of citizens.

I like the idea of creating a web of pumas, each with a variety of focusi (it is now!) on issues and actions. It’s all good.

Does a spiral go clockwise or counterclockwise? I think a black hole goes counterclockwise.

12

murphy 04.07.09 at 11:15 pm

we better not have Taggles!

we need your irreverence and ticked-off-ness. Not to mention your spot-on instincts and homing talents.

13

gay gal 04.07.09 at 11:17 pm

“The counterclockwise rotation of an object free-falling from rest at infinity onto a Kerr black hole is matched by the same counterclockwise rotation of an object thrown way from the black hole is such a way that it comes to rest at infinity.” Have no clue what that means, but seems on target.

taggles, how did your group chose it’s name?

According to Murphy’s posted description…..“Widdershins means to take a course opposite that of the sun, going counterclockwise, left hand-wise, or to circle an object, by always keeping it on the left.

That is another way of saying Retrograde.
Retrograde means… moving from east to west on the celestial sphere; or–for planets–around the sun in a direction opposite to that of the Earth.

I am just curious…. :)

Terry Do, it took days to decide on a name. I can’t remember how I came across it, but once it was suggested with the meaning it was just a perfect fit!

25

jenniforhillary 04.07.09 at 11:31 pm

taggles, not that this is the place or the time, but I have a feminist question (is there such a thing) for you…..

I know you detest the right (and for good reason), but why do you embrace the left? the left has given us pornography, prostitution, the ACLU (which mostly protects pornographers and pimps), lawyers who work full time fighting legislation to protect children because it might interfere with pedophiles (and yes, I can back this up), etc., etc.

Mind you I embrace NEITHER side, and this leaves me stranded looking for a home. And then I found PUMA.

I ask this question for many reasons, but most of all I wonder if women/americans do not forge a new party and leave all old behind we will be trapped in the same box without enough air. The left elected Nobama, and the left hurts women as much as the right (in my humble opinion). And yes there are many true believers and non-hypocrites–you being a most excellent example–but liberals as a whole do not help women and children. Not in effect (laws, money, etc.)……

I would really value your insight on this question…it haunts me in the sense that I do not see a way out if we don’t break free…

26

jenniforhillary 04.07.09 at 11:33 pm

Taggles—I have missed you and Dances I am fine just overworked. If I tried to explain it in one sentence or less it just seems as if everyone’s lives are falling apart in my immediate circle and between work and helping people I have about 4 hours a day to sleep. And while you at puma may not know this when I do not get to see and interact with you I feel very lonely even though I am surrounded by friends/family in my real life. I love puma very much ;(

———-
That you are, Jenn.

32

taggles1 04.07.09 at 11:40 pm

Jenni, because I lean left does not mean I embrace the democratic party.

I understand your concern with the ACLU. However, I am also a big believer in fair trials, the rule of law and fairness of law etc. That doesn’t mean I agree with the ACLU on everything or that I want to see pedophiles and pimps get off.

As a matter of fact I would like to see pedophiles sent to prison for life and child murderers/sicko’s put to death. That is the one crime I have no problem in giving the ultimate penalty for.

I don’t want to be a part of the Democratic Party as it is. I don’t want to reform it, it is too far gone.

But I also hold dear to my values, which neither party represents. Those values, tilt left. And I will never find a home in the Republican Party.

So I am truly politically homeless in the two party sense. I am perfectly at home with PUMA.

33

Pookie 04.07.09 at 11:42 pm

I did’nt write this but a friend of mine did and sent it to me

Obama bowed to Muslim royalty- shameful
He just signaled to the Saudi’s and the Muslims that America is subservient to the Muslim world and the world of Islam and that they are superior to us . Someone desperately needs to teach him and his wife and staff proper protocol and how to act more dignified when in public and how NOT to skip down the steps getting off of Air Force One and not to hop up onto the podium when he gives a press conference again !! Someone really needs to teach him that he can stop campaigning now , the election is over with and he won and NOW it’s time to get to work instead of having his semester abroad and traveling at taxpayers expense !!

THIS IS AN AFFRONT TO EVERY AMERICAN.

I’ve avoided commenting on Obama’s gift of an iPod to the Queen of England – loaded with mp3 files of “great Obama speeches.” Never mind that the iPod was made in China. He put his speeches on it! What a self-centered, ego-maniacal narcissist he is.

But now, what the Hell is this President doing?!?!?!?!?!
Obama bowed to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia! This really happened. See it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WlqW6UCeaY

First, Americans – especially American presidents – bow to no one.
Second, don’t give me any of that “He’s showing respect to a monarch” crap. Obama didn’t bow to the Queen of England.
Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush have all met with the King of Saudi Arabia, and not one of them bowed!!!
Maybe Obama is just bowing to his Muslim Master.
It emboldens the Muslims who see his bow as a sign of The Great Satan being subservient to the great Muslim ruler. I’m surprised Obama didn’t lick the bottom of the king’s shoes while he was down there…or shine them, for which he’s much better qualified.

Who the hell is teaching this damn fool protocol??!?!?!?!?!

Obama is not the “Manchurian Candidate”, he is the “Mecca Candidate”.

And, yes, I’m trying to stir up trouble. This really irrates me, big time………

34

jenniforhillary 04.07.09 at 11:43 pm

Taggles….and Dances I heard that and it put the BIGGEST smile on my face you can imagine…it is not that I think you are embracing the Democratic party but that by embracing the left you are in fact embracing the heart of the beast….

I would stand behind/beside/under you period. My fear though is that by saying you lean left you give power to the beast. What if we rethought how we leaned and said we lean PUMA or we lean WOMAN or we lean “fill in the blank.” The left truly is not a friend to women or good people and nor is the right.

35

taggles1 04.07.09 at 11:45 pm

Jenni, the democratic party does not represent left values. That is why I became a PUMA.

36

jenniforhillary 04.07.09 at 11:46 pm

And the ACLU is owned by Hugh Hefner. He has paid for their offices/salaries for 20 plus years. If you want fair trials or laws that actually effect justice we need a new watchdog group for sure. I think I know of a few good women for the job….

41

taggles1 04.07.09 at 11:52 pm

Jenni, some bad will come out of everything that tries to do good.

The ACLU draws a line in the sand and fights for Constitutional Rights. Sometimes bad things and bad people benefit as a result.

42

jenniforhillary 04.07.09 at 11:53 pm

taggles…I want to discuss this further because it is something I have been working with/on for years (the left and women in general). Dances, i will be calling you tomorrow so do not lose your phone. Murphy, if you have a chance to see my letter that would be so very nice.

My parting response before I drop from lack of sleep is this: The only thing right about Nobama’s bow is that he was closer to where he belongs…on his knees begging for forgiveness. And the answer is no.

gay gal 04.07.09 at 11:17 pm It means they are the same. Iike yin and yang each make up the one whole. One is no more than a reflection of the other.

On a lighter note~~~I finally caught a break. I have the double-disc 30th Anniversaire Edith Piaf to listen to.

Yep, Barbara, sad but true~~56% and rising. Scary stuff, huh?

We can either step up and try to change this in ours and others life, or cower and wait for it to devour us. We DO have a choice; A HARD choice, but a choice nevertheless. Some of my ancestos chose to go down fighting, while others went to the living hell of the Reservation. I think you all know which choice I’ve made.

Dances, the evolution of Gull Bladder (GB) surgery in a nut shell.

In 1952 my mother had her gull bladder removed and her scare was like a large crossroad.
Fast forward to 1975 my (GB) removal left me with a four inch souvenir.
In 1998 like mother like daughter, her GB was removed and you can barely see her 3 little (¾ inch) scares.
Now if hereditary hold true, my granddaughter’s removal of her GB will probably consist of a pill that somehow know to go directly to the gall bladder and dissolve it.

Good recovery on Tuesday Dances and with all this positive health energy arriving with you from Puma nation, I have no doubts that you will be blogging that very same evening…

I remember when going to Just Say No Deal seemed to link everyone, then again, is PUMApac the link or is everyone just linked by posting the link on the side?

I wish we could all have a place to meet and do prowls together, and yet have all the great writers to read from each day.

One last thing, who has always been my favorite mystical hero…Merlin of course. I cried the day I found out he might not have been real. I actually disliked my English teacher for ever introducing us to him and find out he may not have lived at all.

“MONTPELIER, Vt. — Gay-rights groups say that momentum from back-to-back victories on same-sex marriage in Vermont and Iowa could spill into other states, particularly since at least nine other legislatures are considering measures this year to allow marriage between gay couples.”

Citi chair tired of bank ‘demonizing’

#Citigroup Chairman Richard Parsons has grown tired of critics “demonizing the bankers” over the worldwide financial crisis.

“Everybody participated in pumping up this balloon and now that the balloon has conflated, everybody in reality has some part in the blame,” Parsons said Monday night in Hawaii, according to the Honolulu television station KHON.

“Demonizing the bankers as if they — and they alone — created the financial meltdown is both inaccurate and short-sighted,” he asserted.

“Everybody, in reality, has some part of the blame,” he added. “But it’s much more in the culture to find a villain and vilify the villain.”

Parsons conceded that Wall Street compensation “needs to and will undergo some serious change and modification going forward.” But he also pointed out that it’s “much more complicated than that.”

Parsons, who was an economic adviser on Barack Obama’s presidential transition team, also warned that reprimanding banks for spending funds on corporate retreats and travel hurts those on the lower end of the economic ladder more than it hurts the banks.

“Who is actually suffering are waiters and busboys and wait staff and cleaning staff at hotels,” he said. “It’s really affecting the bottom of the pyramid in terms of employment and little people.”

TEMECULA, Calif. – A gunman opened fire at a remote Korean Christian retreat center Tuesday night, leaving one person dead and at least three people injured, authorities said.

Authorities were first called to the rural area about 7 p.m. after receiving reports about a man shooting his wife, California Highway Patrol spokesman Mario Lopez said.

Chavez in China Touts ‘New World Order’

Associated Press

BEIJING –Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his two-day visit to Beijing this week is part of the creation of a “new world order.”

The frequent U.S. critic told reporters that power in the world is shifting from America to countries such as Iran, Japan and China.

“We are creating a new world, a balanced world. A new world order, a multipolar world,” Mr. Chavez said on arriving in China the evening before a scheduled Wednesday meeting with China’s president and Communist Party leader Hu Jintao.

“The unipolar world has collapsed. The power of the U.S. empire has collapsed,” he said.

“Everyday, the new poles of world power are becoming stronger. Beijing, Tokyo, Tehran .. It’s moving toward the East and toward the South.”

VIOLATION OF FEMALE MODESTY

Jewish Papers Alter Israeli Cabinet Photo
(April 7) – A pair of ultra-orthodox Jewish newspapers altered a photograph of the new Israeli Cabinet, removing two female ministers from the shot, the BBC reported. The papers printed the doctored images last week.

In one of the newspapers, female ministers Limor Livnat and Sofa Landver were replaced by two men in the inaugural photo of Israel’s new 30-member Cabinet, which is headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The other publication blacked out the women.

Why? Because many ultra-orthodox Jews view publishing photos of women as a violation of female modesty. Click through the photos below to see the before and after shots of the Cabinet followed by other images that have people scratching their heads.

The Associated Press is tiptoeing around the issue of abuse by the Alabama man who killed his wife and 4 kids by insisting that he ‘alledgedly’ abused her before the killings (even though she had filed a court complaint. The headline is ‘Ala. wife alleged abuse before quadruple-slaying’. They are so worried about making him look bad that it is ridiculous:

PRICEVILLE, Ala. – A man who police say shot and killed his estranged wife, their daughter and two other relatives before burning down his house and committing suicide on the eve of their divorce trial gave no hints of the mayhem to come, police and court officials say.

While Kevin Garner’s wife accused him of being abusive in court filings, authorities said the 45-year-old chemical company worker gave no indication that their split could result in the violence that occurred Tuesday.

Garner’s behavior didn’t seem odd during a brief court appearance Monday, Circuit Judge Sherrie W. Paler said, and the divorce wasn’t considered particularly contentious by courthouse workers or the lawyers who were involved.

“I was terribly shocked and saddened by this unexpected tragedy,” said Jerry Knight, an attorney who represented Garner in the divorce, which was scheduled to go to trial Wednesday.

Knight, in an e-mail to The Associated Press, said Garner “had a terrific work ethic and value system.”
