Today’s Winner of the Puma PAC
DAILY PIG
BARACK OBAMA!
Congratulations, you Handsome Devil, You!
“In a sign that Obama may be willing to compromise, officials said the president made a personal appeal to House Democrats to jettison from the package family planning funds for low-income people.” Get that? JETTISON. As in, throw overboard. Well, no soup for Planned Parenthood! But Faith-Based initiatives are safe and tucked wonderfully under Obama’s wing. Here’s where that “family planning to low income people” money’s going to:
“Obama reportedly plans to change the name from the “Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives” into his own “White House Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.” The old office would become 12 offices to carry out the expanded program. Not exactly the change that many secularists and liberals were hoping for.” From SM77.

Dear Ms. Kort:
President Obama today signaled his willingness to Republicans in Congress to abandon the provision for family planning resources for poor women in the Stimulus Package. As a member of Puma PAC (www.pumapac.org) who was outraged when you ran a photo of Obama as a Feminist SUPERMAN on your cover last month, I have to ask you,
IS THIS WHAT A FEMINIST WOULD DO??
I sincerely hope you will address your error in judgment in your next issue.
Sincerely,
Your Name

I’ve been trying to find out more about the Bonneville Power Administration which is set to receive $3.25 billion of the stimulus package for wind power, as I understand. Seems BPA is a special-interest favorite and is several billion in debt, so I think we can kiss those bucks goodbye.

I’m a Pacific Northwesterner so am really interested in the research you are doing on the BPA. I clicked on the links you provided and found that the testimony was from 1995 and some of the other information was from 2001.
We take our energy usage and the impact on the environment seriously in the PNW so to read about the BPA surprised me. I remember when the issues you raise were in the news. They haven’t been in the news in a long time so they may have straightened up their act.
Our energy is fairly cheap out here, I think. We pay $57/month for electricity and $85/month for natural gas (used for heating, cooking, and water heater). I don’t know how that compares to other parts of the country for a family of four (well, six if you count the dogs).
Thanks for checking out the BPA; I’ll be looking for your posts to see how they are doing now.
Off to finish my pages now.

KerryLINY 01.27.09 at 6:14 pm
Darn. That was a nice provision to strip out of the stimulus. Why not he mall thing. What’s up with the republicans anyway? Arent they the bigger pigs?
Seems more like classism though than sexism. BHO can afford abortions for his own daughters and has made it clear in the past that he will, if needed. The stimulus is not intended to replace regular budgets and other bills will come up such as those for SCHIP just passed and health insurance – one will likely include this again. The dems have been introducing this for years and wont give up, not with Pelosi at the helm. States will only continue to do it the old way for now I suppose. As long as he doesnt jettison the recently approved fair pay act.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/01/contraceptive-m.html
“Under the scuttled contraceptive provision, states would have been able to offer family planning services — including contraceptives — under Medicaid, the government health program for the poor, without having to obtain federal permission.
Now that the provision has been dropped, states will need to seek a federal waiver before being allowed to use Medicaid to provide family planning services and supplies to low income women.”
Controversy over the contraception provision was sparked over the weekend when George Stephanopoulos asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about it on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?” asked Stephanopoulos.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/01/contraceptive-m.html.
Just got back from work. Will return shortly to take another 10 pages.

KerryLINY, the republicans have no power, zero, zip, nada, squat. Obama made this ‘bipartisan’ concession for nothing.
taggles1 01.27.09 at 6:43 pm
Also, KerryLINY,
do you think obama is a feminist? He mentioned his dead beat dad in his inaugural address, but not his mom and the woman who brought him up (his grandmother). Speaks volumes if you ask me.
periodically feeling down?
likeable enough?
Later sweetie!
spec of dirt on his shoulder?
flipped the bird?
Present voting on choice matters, means a lot. yeah right.
How many excuses can be made?
PUMA’s have faced his sexism since last January. This is just one more slight. No matter the excuse, he is mighty quick to throw the women’s issue under the bus when politically expedient and put it off to another day.
He does not deserve the title of superwoman. He has done NOTHING for women’s rights and people have every right to question the democratic party and women’s groups who insist he is a feminist and a friend to women when his actions show the exact opposite. I don’t buy it.
murphy 01.27.09 at 6:46 pm
oh I would call this more than a slight.
this is a very loud signal to women, women’s groups, and people who work to bring health services to poor communities.
and the message is: GO TO HELL.
taggles1 01.27.09 at 6:46 pm
atleast planned parenthood might be waking up.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) expressed disappointment that a measure to invest in health care and allow states to expand health care access to more women was removed from the economic stimulus.
“We are disappointed that the Medicaid Family Planning State Option, a commonsense provision to expand basic health care to millions of women, including many who have lost their jobs in the current economic downturn, was a victim of misleading attacks and partisan politics, and dropped from the economic stimulus bill,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards.
As ThinkProgress points out, “… conservatives are distorting and simplifying the facts…. this measure would not only aid states, but also provide preventative, cost-saving health care to help low-income women support their families and keep working.”
“The American people have rejected the divisive politics of the past. They want commonsense solutions that invest in health care and get us out of this economic downturn. The Medicaid Family Planning State Option is commonsense policy that does just that. We applaud Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Henry Waxman for including this provision in the economic stimulus and are disappointed that it was removed,” said Richards. “We are confident that we can work with the administration and leaders on the Hill to ensure passage of this commonsense proposal and extend basic health care to millions more women.”

murphy 01.27.09 at 6:58 pm
and please dont listen to Matt Drudge!
We are not talking about handing out CONDOMS TO 2nd GRADERS here.
We are talking about making prenatal visits at community health centers available for free or for very reduced fees.
offering birth control pills to sexually active teenagers (SO THEY DONT GET PREGNANT and end up costing taxpayers MILLIONS)
expanding the services of community health centers to try to PREVENT PREGNANCY AND STD’s
This money was NOT going to be used for icky abortions.
Even Sarah Palin approves of birth control.
Now, the whole Stimulus Bill may be total bull, but that is NO EXCUSE for obama or his minions to throw poor women under the bus.

murphy 01.27.09 at 7:04 pm
obama that is — of course!
and another thing — community health centers are staffed overwhelmingly by women. Expanding funding and programs for them would mean JOBS FOR WOMEN.
also, poor and uninsured women are far more likely to be treated by nurses than doctors for preventative care, so again — increased funding means MORE NURSES and MORE JOBS FOR WOMEN.
How many Puma PAC members are people who live near community health centers and maybe would have applied for a job in the billing or outreach departments of those places if they were hiring? How many women are web designers and graphic designers who maybe would have applied for contract work to produce posters or flyers or websites for these centers?
there ARE jobs in the stimulus package — there’s no question about that.
the question is HOW MANY and WHY THE PANICKED RUSH to get it passed?
What’s hiding in there?

Prowl done. This is unbelievable. Where I live there are 4 planned parenthood centers within a 15 mile radius. There is a wait period of 3 weeks to get in. I, would not normally reveal this, but I myself had to call for help recently to get tested after I caught a cheating husband. It was the most humiliating experience, not only am I uninsured, but to have to do something like that at my age and after being married for so long, it was something I never thought I would have to go through. If it were not for the women in that center helping me through, I do not know what I would have done.
It is shameful that we as women have to give such details of our life to get some points across.

—————————————————————-
My personal opinion is that wind energy is a viable option in certain parts of the PNW. For instance, the Columbia Gorge area immediately comes to mind. I’ve lived in WA State since I was five years old so I grew up with water being our source of power and natural gas as a way of heating. I actually thought that coal as a heat source was something from history!

Not ready to write a summary on my next ten pages but thought pumas might like to know that I am actually finding a worthwhile use of the money in the section I am working on. I don’t know how much money it is but it has to do with schools. And it will create jobs in a variety of ways. Repairing schools, bringing them up to code, technology innovations, etc.

Here is the last paragraph about women:
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH

there are jobs in there all right, several people are going to be needed to help administrate the loans and other fundings presented, and it sure as hell is not going to be the average joe. the average joe or jodine is going to be working their asses off doing the manual labour while those who supported bo get the high influential jobs. Bo’s got supporters who just finished college that need jobs. i can bet they won’t be the ones lifting hammers, or anything productive. this stimulus in my opinion his his way of saying thanks to the obots.
of course this in only my opinion, unlike Bo and his party of fools, i can’t give anyone else’s opinion but my own.

I believe ChristineRI was expressing frustration about her attempt to make a point being quashed, and that the response of the person who attacked her was ironic because calling a lingerie model a bimbo is pretty mild compared to telling a friendly stranger to “fuck off”
of course the argument could be made that while telling someone to “fuck off” is not polite, it’s also not sexist (it’s gender neutral) whereas calling a woman a bimbo, unless you’re being obviously sarcastic or ironic, IS sexist.
damn, those conflucians are a bunch of rabid lesbian feminazis.

miq2xu is a pig. It’s that simple. 90% of his comments and some of his post are pure bacon. That’s the reason so many women don’t read the Confluence any more, or rarely just to see if he’s been exiled yet. Too bad, too, because there are a number of talented posters and commenters over there. Luckily, many of them have their own blogs, so all is not lost.

Women who happily objectify themselves are as much a part of the problem of sexism and misogyny as are some men. Until other women cease to make excuses for this objectional behavior, it will be a neverending cycle of the same bullshit, different decade. Until women can stop blaming and start taking responsibility, there will be no equality.

Aren’t women who willingly objectifying themselves really objectifying men as sexual morons?

And in more news form the Bush III administration that you haven’t heard about:
Obama will meet with CEOs to sell economic recovery plan
By Dave Cook | 01.27.09
As part of his sales campaign for the economic stimulus plan, President Obama will meet Wednesday morning with corporate chief executive officers.
Take notes, no questions needed
After their chat, Obama will deliver remarks on the bill in the East Room but will not take reporters’ questions, according to press secretary Robert Gibbs.
While the president has not sat down with American reporters since moving into the White House, he gave his first TV interview to Al-Arabiya, a Dubai-based satellite news channel. Mr. Obama spoke as his envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, arrived in Egypt on the first stop of a trip that also will take him to Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Mr. Gibbs said Obama’s interview, which aired Tuesday, was an “opportunity to show the world he would be personally involved and engaged in seeking peace in the Middle East.”
The CEOs who visit Wednesday are likely to tell the president about hard times – and resulting layoffs – at their companies amid the economic downturn. The meeting with the titans of industry follows Obama’s trip Tuesday to Capitol Hill to meet with Republicans in the House and Senate to seek their support of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

christineRI — I dont think women who objectify themselves are as much a part of the problem of misogyny or the power structure of our society any more than I think Thai women who volunteer to work in brothels for western sex tourists are as much a part of the problem.
Some of those women are coerced or kidnapped (which makes them SLAVES, and I pray that Sec. Clinton will be Wonder WOman and Xena Warrior Princess all rolled into one and rescue them ALL) but lots and lots of them choose of their own volition to become sex workers for American and European men.
But how can I blame them? The situation of their countries, their economies, education system, ridiculous marriage by dowry systems all contribute to an environment in which becoming a prostitute is a sensible “choice.”
Obviously, Harvard educated Ali is in a different situation, but if she is guilty, what exactly is she guilty OF?
I posted this over at the Confluence, but I’m too skeered to see if it was deleted or if it pissed anyone off.
Some food for thought (long comment, apologizing in advance):
“The idea that women’s public sexuality can so precisely mirror traditional male fantasy while simultaneously existing in a kind of pro-woman, I-do-it-for-myself alternate universe is the cornerstone of funfeminist “thought.” The flaw in this reasoning is that all women must participate in patriarchy regardless of what they say motivates their participation; patriarchy is the dominant culture, and there is no opting out. Which means there is no opting in, either. Do it for me, do it for you, whatever; the primary beneficiaries of women’s participation — willing or unwilling, ironic or sincere — in patriarchy, are men.”
and
“American women overwhelmingly are invested to an enormous degree in patriarchy and . . . have no wish to confront the many ways in which this investment dehumanizes them. They would rather shoot the messenger. So they imagine that radical feminists hate them for wearing lipstick, or that we want them to castrate their husbands in their sleep, or that we want to turn them into dykes, or that we aspire to outlaw sex. And that all these things that they imagine we are makes us paternalistic Nazi sex cops who view all women as “brainwashed.” They all seem to be saying,”I don’t know if patriarchy even exists, but if it does, it doesn’t affect me, so fuck you.”
I don’t blame them. You kind of have to be in the mood to go mano a mano with patriarchy; it’s like getting hit with a piss balloon from a frat house window. But Holly’s view* reveals a certain lack of sophistication. Sexy feminists, there’s a lot more at stake with American feminism than exercising your right to bleach your asshole. Consider what Iranian feminist blogger Unitari had to say in a comment the other day at La Chola:
It is so important to understand that the condition of human and women’s rights in the US and Europe and the west indirectly affects what happens to human and women’s rights around the world. So it is important for American feminists to work on improving “their own” society while staying in solidarity with feminists in other countries.
[…]
I agree 100% with the assertion that many americans including feminists are blind to the problems in their own society and have a condescending attitude about the whole thing. In fact, strengthening human rights and women’s rights in this country helps all feminists globally.
In other words, even if you’re a rich white heterosexual American “privilegebunny” who luxuriates in what you imagine is an oppression-free bubble, feminism matters. ”

The equality isn’t gifted, it’s demanded. Respect isn’t a birthright, it has to be earned. If behaving ourselves means not using sexuality to make a buck, get a promotion or get the vote, then, yes. And however we are, in doing this, is damn well presentable enough.

Blagojevich Fundraiser Added to Obama, Biden, Jackson War Chests
Published by Lindsay Renick Mayer on January 26, 2009 5:54 PM |
Although it’s unclear to what extent businessman Raghuveer Nayak was involved in Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s alleged scheme to sell President Obama’s Senate seat, what is clear is Nayak’s commitment to funding the campaigns of the governor, the new president, the new vice president and others in Congress and the administration. Investigators are reportedly probing whether Blagojevich tried to get $500,000 from Nayak to secure the seat for Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., whose brother was a business partner of Nayak’s. In total, Nayak has given $220,300 to federal lawmakers and committees, 93 percent of which has gone to Democrats, the Center for Responsive Politics has found.
Jackson has received more money from Nayak at the federal level than any other lawmaker since 1989, at $22,600. Nayak was a seemingly close associate of Jesse Jackson Sr., according to the Washington Post, and joined him in civil rights causes, sat on the board of one of his organizations and accompanied him on a trip to New Delhi in 2007. Although Nayak only gave Blagojevich $500 during the governor’s time in Congress, he has been one of Blagojevich’s top fundraisers for state office, the Post reported. Nayak has been a pervasive donor, especially to Illinois lawmakers, which now gives him a connection to some of the top politicians in the country. He and his wife, Anita, have given Obama $19,800 since the 2004 election cycle, more than any other recipient but Jackson. They also gave $2,500 to former Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel, who is now White House Chief of Staff.

Another some women don’t like is to be patronized. By men or women.
lori 01.27.09 at 10:58 pm
I don’t have any problem with the idea that a young woman who thinks of herself as a feminist might wind up posing for Maxim for the bucks or the attention. I’ve met Morgan Fairchild and a few others who are good feminists who have done things.
I have a problem with the idea that anyone who thinks of herself as a feminist would give that “white, Holy Cross douche” the time of day. I have a problem with the idea that feminists would support Barack Obama.
I, like a lot of other 50+ year old feminists, think the meaning of the word has gotten lost.

“Respect isn’t a birthright, it has to be earned.”
I think it is a birthright. Respect is lost when one violates others.
jenniforhillary 01.27.09 at 11:13 pm
And I love what Christine said.
Sex is where is starts and where it will end. When women are viewed as humans, and not sex objects (i.e. NON human) we might begin to start the discourse about what is right. Until then, we are saying blah blah blah and they are jacking off.
And, for the record, women in the porn industry are as mean, if not meaner, than the men…they are harsh, hard, and dead (inside that is). The women who are VICTIMS (and this is the majority) just wish they were dead….and most of them are actively trying to get there (via drugs, etc.)…
The small amount of highly educated women who strip, pose, or sell their bodies diminish themselves, shame themselves, and add salt to the wounds of women who would give anything to not be violated. If you want excitement, I suggest a roller coaster.
Our sex (i.e. lack of penis) is what separates us and until women understand that you will never see a naked CEO or President of the USA on the pages of I JACK OFF A LOT we will ALWAYS be the lesser sex. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. Sexual equality cannot be achieved by MORE SEX. Sort of like a good economy will NEVER be achieved by more government spending. NEVER NEVER NEVER.
Keep your clothes on, read books, study, and become lawyers, political activists, run for political office, own businesses. Get money, get power, change the world. KEEP YOUR CLOTHES ON…..these are rules women could live by and we might actually get somewhere with our ‘movement.’

poetry from MKinLA!
Speaking of which, I read a beautiful poem the other night:
Love After Love by Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

#114 murphy,
Yes, but this wasn’t just ANY fundraiser. This is the one who held the fundraiser to buy Obama’s senate seat for Jesse Jr. causing Patrick Fitzgerald to stop his appointment by arresting Blago. He will likely be indicted at some point.
I think Blago is holding out to see if anyone is going to come to his rescue. That’s looking very unlikely. When that sinks in, I see him spilling his guts to Fitzgerald in order to cop a plea.
Obama will probably weather this one too and get by with throwing Jesse Jr., Emanuel and Jarrett under the bus. He’ll say they aren’t the people he knew and the bots will all praise him in sympathy for having such people always trying to bring him down.
Of course it has to be getting very crowded under that bus and we can only hope the denizens will soon revolt against their antagonist.

jenniforhillary,
Can I ask about the adventure with the obots thing? I’m curious about the video that was posted and how it came about. Who approached who? I seem to remember the video sort of started in the middle. Was there a question or exchange that went on before? I’m not even sure what the video was about. I also remember the lens zooming in and out. What did the person filming look like while they were doing it? Also how long has Jenn been commenting with Pumas? Was there some exchange with obots before that? If possible I would like to see for myself how it happened.
I’m sorry if this brings up something unpleasant, and if there is not answer I will understand completely. We have all had our eyes opened by our contact with the obots.
