Women Who Smoke!

kay-yow

Kay Yow, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach died today. She was 66. From her New York Times obituary:

“In a collegiate coaching career dating to 1971, when women’s basketball was barely noticed as a national sport, Yow won 737 games, No. 6 on the women’s career list. She coached North Carolina State to four Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships, 20 appearances in the N.C.A.A. tournament and one Final Four, in 1998.

Yow coached the United States women’s team to gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the 1986 world championships and the 1986 Goodwill Games. She received the Wooden award as the Division I women’s basketball coach of the year in 2000 and was inducted as the fifth women’s coach in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame at Springfield, Mass., in 2002. Her career record was 737-344.”

And speaking of Women Who Smoke, Pat Summitt is no slouch either. Her University of Tennessee basketball team has a big game tomorrow against undefeated Auburn University. If the Lady Volunteers win, it will mark her 999th career win.

pat-summitt

“In 35 seasons at Tennessee, Summitt’s winning percentage is .844. She has guided her current team, which starts four freshmen and has one upperclassman, to a 15-3 record and No. 10 ranking in the Associated Press poll.

The Lady Volunteers, the two-time defending N.C.A.A.champions, will play Sunday at unbeaten and sixth-ranked Auburn, intent on securing career victory No. 999 for Summitt. No coach, man or woman, is within 30 victories of her total.”

And get this:

“A better measure of Summitt’s success — in her eyes, anyway — is this: 45 Lady Volunteers, about a third of the players who have passed through her program, have become coaches — from youth leagues to the pros.” (h/t danceswithpumas)

In other news, obama is a little bit more popular than Jimmy Carter. Ha! He’s got a 68% approval rating so far. Not too shabby. It even sets a record: most precipitous drop in approval from just before to just after inauguration. Obama dropped 15 points in a week. (h/t kat in your hat)

The new job-approval figure puts him at the upper end of opening poll numbers for presidents, but doesn’t set a record.
Gallup’s initial job approval ratings were President John F. Kennedy, 72 percent; Dwight Eisenhower, 68 percent; Jimmy Carter, 66 percent; Richard Nixon, 59 percent; Bill Clinton, 58 percent; George W. Bush, 57 percent; and Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, 51 percent.

And in other, other news, Will Bower gives a great interview to Newsweek HERE (scroll down about halfway to “Hillaryland”) He is quite articulate and persuasive, I think, in his descriptions of the Puma Movement, and I REALLY like his idea for Primary Reform:

I want a truly mathematical, geometrical system…to order primaries based on margins of victory in the general election before…to focus on the Ohios, Pennsylvanias and Wisconsins and Floridas – the states right in the middle, the purple states. Parties go after those states anyway; we might as well tailor our primaries that way, to appeal to voters in those states instead of getting candidates who appeal to extremes, John Kerry on one side and George Bush on the other.

Please take a second and post some supportive comments. Not surprisingly, the bots are out in force and really ridiculing Will. Comments HERE.

“45 Lady Volunteers, about a third of the players who have passed through her program, have become coaches — from youth leagues to the pros.”

Now that is one amazing statistic that she can really be proud of. Wow. And they’re probably really good coaches at that!

I cannot pretend to know. However, I do know that none of them represent my interests. In very simplistic terms, we need to restore the integrity of a democracy. Our elected officials should answer to the people and be accountable to them. Even the President of the US is nobody without the People. In the chaos that I believe will ensue from the mess being made, I must keep my sight on the simple things: freedom, justice, fairness, equality.

9

bqueen 01.24.09 at 7:05 pm

Thanks Headclunker. I just don’t see how we can restore anything when individuals with that much cash play chess with elections and countries.

PREZ ZINGS GOP FOE IN A $TIMULATING TALK

WASHINGTON — President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.
One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

“There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats,” the official said. “We shouldn’t let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done.”

That wasn’t Obama’s only jab at Republicans today.

In an exchange with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) about the proposal, the president shot back: “I won,” according to aides briefed on the meeting.

“I will trump you on that.”

Not that Obama was gloating. He was just explaining that he aims to get his way on stimulus package and all other legislation, sources said, noting his unrivaled one-party control of both congressional chambers.

“We are experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis that has to be dealt with and dealt with rapidly,” Obama said during the meeting.

Republicans say the $825 billion price tag is too big a burden for a nation crippled by debt and that it doesn’t do enough to stimulate the economy by cutting taxes.

“You know, I’m concerned about the size of the package. And I’m concerned about some of the spending that’s in there, [about] … how you can spend hundreds of millions
contraceptives,” House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) later said.
“How does that stimulate the economy?”

But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs countered: “There was a lot of agreement in that room about the notion that we’re facing an economic crisis unlike we’ve seen in quite some time … that we must act quickly to stimulate the economy, create jobs, put money back in people’s pockets.”

Gibbs disagreed with those who called the meeting window dressing. “The president is certainly going to listen to any ideas,” he said.

“He will also go to Capitol Hill the beginning of next week to talk to Republican caucuses and solicit their input and their ideas.”

HEMA is a Dutch department store that opened on November 4, 1926, in Amsterdam. Now there are 150 stores all over the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany.

Take a look at HEMA’s product page. You can’t order anything and it’s in Dutch, but just wait a couple of seconds and watch what happens.

Don’t click on anything, just wait and see what happens. And be sure you have your sound turned up.

Thank for the news about Yow. What a battle she put up for years, coaching all the while. I will miss her.

Big, Big fan of women’s basketball here and it touched my heart to see the tribute to Yow and Summit. Sylvia Hatchell of NC won her 800th game this week.

In the middle of politics, women’s basketball keeps me sane. These are some of the strongest, smartest, most focused women on the planet and they keep passing it on.

Took a break to reflect and listen to all my local Obots; give them a chance. However, I have had my fill. Today they resorted to accusing Roberts of “setting Obama up” when the oath of office was bumbled. Obams has given them so little to brag about, they have resorted to absurd Republican attacks. They must blame someone for voting for someone so weak.

Good to be back amongst people who see through all the bull.

hillstheone #56

It is so sad. I wonder if they all felt abandoned and left out, like O didn’t care enough or respect them enough to be there. He’s the Commander-in-chief now, his main role is to keep the nation safe and to…command our military. I don’t think he cares at all about the military, and I think he’s clueless about respecting the soldiers and also maintaining positive morale for them.

“The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed on a member of the United States armed forces who distinguishes himself “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States”.[1] Because of the nature of its criteria, the medal is often awarded posthumously.”

FECK obama

BO has been a bad boy and needs to be FECKed a whole lot more. The first revision to BO’s Post-General FEC report was filed 1/16/09. I got the letter but could not open the file. Now the file appears to be gone.

I am 83% through the Post-General analysis. This reporting is really awful. Not just all the errors and BS, but it is apparent that the $485 he released information on is from approximately 700,000 donors. Yet he brags about having 3.1 million. SHOW ME THE DATA!

The $255 million and 2.4 million donors are per BO’s say so.

Yup. When our teams were formed, ACORN, FEC, Primary Reform, and one or two others, were sub-categories of the umbrella team “Election Reform”. Maybe if those Pumas who are interested volunteered, we could get the Primary Reform Team underway. This might be very good timing, since some of teh existing teams are in the last phases of accomplishing their team goals.

If anyone is interested in joining the Primary Reform Team, send an email with the email address you want to use for team correspondence, include your blog name in the email, and add the team name to the subject line, to:

Chris Matthews is gonzo: a confidential source, who is “in the know,” informed us that the reason that Matthews did not run for the PA senate seat was as follows: his advisors were concerned that he would get smoked by two strong opponents: TNA (womens group) and the PUMAs – yes this is true. And, Trish…

If you’d like to know more about how we received the debt information we did, I’d be happy to give you some of the history. I don’t I think I should post it *too* openly (for the time being), but I’ll be glad to answer what questions I can about it.

We have since learned that the original source may have had a lack of concern about passing on reliable information. I had little reason to mistrust my direct sources, but it seems as if *they* may have had reasons to mistrust *theirs*.

Have no doubt — if I could change one thing about the last 6 months — it would be to not have passed on unreliable information. I was very new to the “Source” game and learned the hard way.

Will Bower so glad to see you on this board. I totally believe that you were misled. I spent most of the campaign posting on the “out there” boards which were swamped by Obama supporters. With as many different boards as there are on IMDB, they managed to swamp them all. I also posted on the major networks, Salon, and a few others related to newspapers.

Trying to find the truth, much less links to the truth was nearly impossible since the articles, postings, information came and went like it washed in and out with the tide. I call Obama’s “well run” campaign a monumental creation of mis-information and disbursed information. Info changing from day to day, Obama telling people that he hadn’t said what he had, then suddenly his website would change, people came and went, threats were posted then disappeared to be replaced by accusations of racist motives…on and on it went.

Rules were ignored and the masses just gave in because no one could keep up with the constant changes on so many different fronts…everyone caved…including Hillary, and John McCain who gave up the fight by trying to be honorable against a man.

My next battle is the 2009 election for our NJ Governor. I have never disliked a politician as much as I dislike Gov Corzine. He pays people off, he was behind Hillary until Obama took over, then he threw Hillary in the trash along with the NJ voters who had voted for her in the Primary where she WON. At the DNC Corzine gave every NJ vote to Obama. I will be working to have the republican candidate replace Corzine. I’m hoping it will be the start of many things turning around not just for NJ but for the nation.

Corzine dated the head of my union and there is so much corruption under both of them that it has to be stopped if NJ ever wants to get out from under the corruption that makes us just like Chicago. Only a bit worse since it is evident that our officials were never clean. But then again, neither were Chicago’s.

Best wishes Will.

Good evening,
I know I haven’t been around for quite awhile and now I am turning to Pumas when I have a problem. I get 5 to 15 email assuring me that I would like viagra. I believe I have the Canadian Pharmacy that I got my Fosamax from before Medicare Part D. I think that they probably sold my email address to these individuals.
I was in such haste to span one of these particularly annoying subjet lines that I accidentally spamed the whole page of inbox emails. I did try searching for the possibility of recovering the emails but didn’t find an answer that helped me. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how I can recover these lost emails? I would be very grateful for any help.

85

I get canadian pharmacy stuff all the time and I don’t think it’s real at all.

86

sandipuma 01.25.09 at 2:13 am

I get Canadian meds all the time for half of the price as here. It is the same Rexal as here.Big difference and i save a lot of money.

Interesting read on the economy with words by one of the “ones” own cabinet members.

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jan/19/economic-crapshoot-ahead/

The first question is whether fiscal stimulus can ameliorate an economic contraction. Interestingly, Mr. Obama’s chief economist, Christina Romer, according to the New York Times, “concluded in research she helped write in 1994 that interest-rate policy is the most powerful force in economic recoveries and that fiscal stimulus generally acts too slowly to be of much help in pulling the economy out of recessions.”

Any experienced political observer must conclude that if we go ahead and spend the trillions of deficit dollars, inevitably a significant percentage of those dollars will get us very few jobs or economic activity per buck. If the spending will bring a prompt recovery, it may be worth the corrupt waste of much money. But will it work, even then?

We are about to roll the dice on the biggest crapshoot in the economic history of humanity. Will seven come eleven? Or will it be snake eyes for our economic future?

Can i ask an open question to the mothers on this board and maybe more importantly to the grandmothers.

As many of you know it has been my dream when we retire to move back to alaska. I grew up in Nebraska and still love nebraska but find in the future that raising the kids we have with the ideals i want them to have the best place would be alaska. It also looks like the wife will have a nusring job wrapped up and i should be able to move into the security guards position at one of the bases up there with my past experience. Money wise we would be doing a little better than okay.

Heres the question, broke the news to my parents and they where very angry to upset about the whole problem. They put what i feel was a guilt trip about distance, visitng etc. My parents never seemed to have time for us or the kids when we were in Nebraska a few years ago, why now? I just dont want to live my life looking twenty years from now when the kids are grown and gone what might have been. Our heart has always been to go back to alaska and i just cant see not making this commitment. IS there anything that we are missing or should be looking at in this major venture in our next phase of life? What are you alls thoughts and sorry if this isnt the place but with our broad diversity i thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks.

Two ex-Guantanamo inmates appear in Al-Qaeda video…….

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hZfIcWnHqBz4kQR90lC_pXaHeW4Q

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Two men released from the US “war on terror” prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have appeared in a video posted on a jihadist website, the SITE monitoring service reported.

One of the two former inmates, a Saudi man identified as Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri, or prisoner number 372, has been elevated to the senior ranks of Al-Qaeda in Yemen, a US counter-terrorism official told AFP.

Three other men appear in the video, including Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi, identified as an Al-Qaeda field commander. SITE later said he was prisoner No. 333.

A Pentagon spokesman, Commander Jeffrey Gordon, on Saturday declined to confirm the SITE information.

“We remain concerned about ex-Guantanamo detainees who have re-affiliated with terrorist organizations after their departure,” said Gordon.

“We will continue to work with the international community to mitigate the threat they pose,” he said.

On the video, al-Shihri is seen sitting with three other men before a flag of the Islamic State of Iraq, the front for Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

“By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for,” al-Shihri was quoted as saying.

Al-Shiri was transferred from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia in 2007, the US counter-terrorism official said.

The other men in the video are identified as Commander Abu Baseer al-Wahayshi and Abu Hureira Qasm al-Rimi (also known as Abu Hureira al-Sana’ani).

The Defense Department has said as many as 61 former Guantanamo detainees — about 11 percent of 520 detainees transferred from the detention center and released — are believed to have returned to the fight.

The latest case highlights the risk the new US administration faces as it moves to empty Guantanamo of its remaining 245 prisoners and close the controversial detention camp within a year.

Go to Alaska. I once moved my family to be closer to the grandparents etc. and they never cared to be involved. They all got sad that we were moving to NJ but no one has come to visit since the year we moved here 20 years ago. We are always the ones that are expected to go visit. We do when we are able to go.

If they cannot call you or visit you when you are nearby, then you have no reason to worry about what they want. If they are not supporting you in any way then just wave good bye. The people in my family who have usually done the best are those who have moved away. It really is up to you to make the choice and not let others make it for you.

95

airforcehusker 01.25.09 at 3:51 am

libby,
Part of our problem comes from the fact that they are ageing and with that they have moved into town. When i say town our town is around a population of 500. Anyhow i grew up on the farm, the farm has basically been abandoned except for a few animals dad still has out there. I asked on numerous occasions to purchase the farm, allow him to come and go as he wants and raise the few animals he still has, My goal was going to be fix up the barn, workshop and a few building, and build a new house and raise the family while keeping the homeplace in the family. Now with that said i explained this to my father. He always comes up with excuses like maybe in a few years or ill think about it. Needless to say i felt like i wasnt taking anything away from them but was trying to preserve a pice of our family heritage buy maintaining the farm in the family name. Needless to say my wife says if they really wanted us around they would support us or like my unlce (dads brother) says why dont they just give you the property as they arnet doing anything with it anyways.
So when all is said an done i believe we must answer what our heart is saying and answer that call. I appreciate the insight on this board so far from you all. thanks

Husker, are you by by chance a boomer? that generation has unusual distance between them and their parents that the boomer-genX combination doesn’t have. A lot of times they view it as a personal failure to get along, but the whole generation has it. There is still a desire to have a relationship, even if they don’t know how to do it. It also sound like you’re trying to take their lives away form them by forcing them to be dependent on you on their own land that they have worked so hard for. You need your own life separate from theirs. I have avoided jobs I might have applied for that would take me father away from my own family–sometimes the years are gone before you know it–but I am very conflicted about this. No matter what you do, you may always keep second-guessing yourself. There is an interesting book called “the three boxes of life and how to get out of them” by the guy that wrote the parachute book, that goes into it and also talks about life planning for couples a little bit. (the three boxes are work, education and retirement) You should be able to get it used online fairly easily.

Oh, wait I found it. Google books has it–you can read a good portion of it online:

BTW, often farmers don’t qualify for social security and they must sell the farm in order to pay their retirement costs. This can be very expensive if they need to be in a nursing home. Not a pleasant thing to think about or articulate.

Re: Hillary’s Independence Day fundraising. I remember frantically posting warnings about the two contribution links at Hillary Clinton.com. To pay down her debt you had to scroll down to the spotlight section, If you hit the large contribution link at the top the money went to the party. I’ve always wondered if that caused the discrepancy.

I agree storytellers. I think Uncle Teddy wanted it, but I think Caroline’s heart was not in it. She has been very private all these years and I expect it was a shock to hear and read about her life as it was being splashed and discussed all over the news.

I agree that they may be pulling a guilt trip, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care.

Afc – You served our country (thank you), now do what you and your wife want to do without any guilt. Your parents will adjust. If not, too bad.

When and if your parents decide on selling/giving you the farm, then you can make a decision at that time about moving back there.

And at the time I was being so careful (probably because of your posts) and was reading the small print on the donation page. It may have been worse than you think because on the night of (I think it was night of July 3) the links changed completely and I, at least, could not find the correct page. Even the links in Hillary’s email messages to us directed me to a page that was not for “retire the debt”. Two days earlier they linked to the correct pages. Tried to contact Hillary’s people by phone and email but who knows if they were Hillary’s people at that point. At first I thought what an awful time for there to be a glitch but I cannot help but wonder if that was a deliberate redirection tot the party coffers. How could we possibly ever find the answer?

Libby 01.26.09 at 3:32 am

That is one good reason not to trust Google. I always wondered why the Google execs were involved in Obama campaign meetings and forcing every person in their employ to give to the Obama campaign the most money they could….then it became apparent. I believe Google was working with the Obama campaign to update his web site according to what he had said most recently, redirect proMcCain posters to negative sites, downplay the legitimacy of non-Obama supporters by listing their websites as questionable or making the search for Puma Pac…three down on the hit list up until very recently on my computer….and on it went. No one could post anything against Obama or for McCain/Palin with out there being 10 people posting trash about the poster within minutes or hours, but never more than 24 hours.

Even worse, there were website hits that appeared to be legitimate news sites but when you clicked on that article, you got a virus on your computer. Mine was down for weeks.

Obama was collecting email names like he was on an easter egg hunt and I’m sure that once Hillary gave in to him, she was pressured to let google or some other guru help her web site collect donations. Or she many not have even known what they were doing if she was tied in to the DNC on her website.

We will probably never know how much damage has been done to this country because of the Obama campaign. What I do know is that it has changed people in ways that are not good or progressive. All around me I see people taking on airs as if because Obama won they can order people around and quit working. What is that all about? I guess they figured out that you talk a good game and do nothing, then you can win it all.
