What Taggles said:
What are we now, Lord Voldemort? Is Puma the “You Know Who” of politics and feminism these days? I also thought it was kinda strange that Amy Siskind never mentioned us either in her own brief appearance on Wednesday. I mean the Ms. cover WAS a travesty and an outrage, but would there have even been any story there if hundreds of Puma PAC members and Conflucians hadn’t flooded Michele Kort’s mailbox on Sunday and Monday? While it is excellent that Amy got the opportunity to criticize Ms’ egregious decision to whitewash history by pretending that Barack Obamais a feminist Superman (gack!), I gotta admit it’s a bit disheartening to find our own members’ efforts go unmentioned. In fact, it ticks me off when our members and readers respond so quickly and effectively to a call to action, only to be treated like the “country cousins” at the family shin-dig.
and Ladyboomer’s too:
Through it all — the trials of our existence — what is the kernel we seek? A means to live in peace, be fed, happy, respected, love and be loved, and make our music? To be free. To be seen. To feel some kind of meaning in our life. Seeing and hearingHillary Clinton’s deep eloquence and majestic thinking during her Senate Confirmation Hearings for Secretary of State reminded me once again.
And because it’s Friday night and I feel nostalgic, here’s a song that was a big hit during my own benighted childhood.
Year of the Puma 2009 Fundraising UPDATE: We are hitting our daily fundraising goals, and if we keep it up we can end fundraising early (yay!). We blew past the $300 target for 3pm, which means if we raise $500 by midnight tonight we can take Sunday off!
A generous Puma just offered a $200 gift card as a raffle item. If you donate between now and tomorrow at 5pm, your name could be “pulled from the hat” and you’ll get the gift card!
That’s pretty nifty.

January 6, 2009
Mr. SERRANO introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary
JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.

Hey pumas,
Dances, thanks for those pix, I wound up visiting the Alice Paul Institute and I saw a pic of the Red Hat ladies: http://www.alicepaul.org/paulsdale.htm#site%20rental
I thought I would pass on the Red Hat Society information in case any women here had not heard of them:
“The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”
- Sue Ellen Cooper, Queen Mother
http://www.redhatsociety.com/
(I guess the red hat ladies put on red hats and meet up for trips and lunches and bond and all that. Just passing it on.)

Puma.sf1: just looked at that film excerpt (#1)…ughhhhhhhh. That film should be mandatory viewing in high school.
Just found this: In January of 2007, the City along with a host of other organizations and agencies conducted a point-in-time assessment of the homeless population in Chicago. The research indicates that 5,922 people are homeless in Chicago at a given time. This includes individuals residing in shelter and housing programs as well as those living on the street.
Now just think how each and every one of those people could be warm and well fed all winter with far less than Oblah-blahs 150 million hedonistic narcissistic wasteful obscene bash.

My neighbor joined Red Hat Society years ago (20?). Walked into an introductory lucnheon. Sat with 5 other women…
they’ve been best friends ever since and have travelled the world together! Aside from the 6 of them partaking in local cultural events and short cruises, once or twice a year they go on a big trip: China, Russia, bicycling in Europe, etc.
Another good group is Elder Hostel. Adventure group for elders.

“Alice Paul unfurling the ratification banner over the railing of the National Woman’s Party headquarters on August 26, 1920 — the day the 19th Amendment was ratified. The banner was one of the most important to the NWP. For every state that ratified suffrage, the members sewed on a star. When Tennessee ratified the amendment, the final star was sewn on. I just heard that Bambi is honoring McCain on Monday with some shindig. Now why did McCain say yes to this? He should have politely said no thank you. Bambi is trying to soften him up in the Senate so he won’t vote against him or get others against him. It’s all political and manipulative on Bambi’s part.

Right. That the fireperson exam was easier for women than the one for men. NOT TRUE.
But then one of teh hosts said something like that there was no way women had the upper body strength of men.
Too much of a generalization. I know some women who are way stronger than some men. So, it has to be taken on a one to one basis.

Apparently, Mr. Conyers thinks we can correct the 50% high school dropout rate among African Americans and the disparity in reading, math and science scores by giving them reparations for slavery. I’m no expert but, seems to me it would just make them drop out sooner and not give a crap about reading, math and science.
Congressional Hearing Held on Slavery Reparations Bill
Final Call, News Report, Askia Muhammed, Posted: Jan 10, 2008
WASHINGTON (FinalCall.com) – For the first time ever, the U.S. Congress officially studied the institution of slavery, its legacy, as well as U.S. efforts to address it and its consequences, during hearings by the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties on Dec. 18.
It was the first time H.R. 40, the proposal to establish a Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act has had any kind of a hearing, even though the legislation has been introduced every year for almost two decades by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
“For over 19 years, I have introduced H.R. 40—not to spark controversy or promote division—but to direct attention to a historical wrong that warrants substantial consideration,” Mr. Conyers said when he gaveled the session to order. “With an H.R. 40 commission, this nation could come closer to racial equality and understanding. Slavery is a blemish on this nation’s history, and until it is addressed, our country’s story will remain marked,” he continued.
The racial disparities, which exist throughout the society are ample evidence, Mr. Conyers insisted, that the vestiges of slavery remain: the Black high school drop-out rate is 50 percent compared to 23 percent for Whites; national average scores in math, science and reading for Black 17-year-olds are comparable to the scores for White 13-year-olds; the poverty rate of Blacks, at 24 percent, is twice the national average.
H.R. 40 is “necessary for this nation,” Mr. Conyers insisted. “We are here today to help folks open their minds as they consider supporting H.R. 40. I truly believe that today’s hearing will start the national dialogue,” which can lead to the formal establishment of a slavery commission, he said.
“This hearing looks not just to the past, but to the legacy of our own history of slavery as it continues to affect race relations and inequality in present day America,” agreed committee member Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.). “It is our duty to ask the difficult questions and to face up to our responsibilities to remedy the ongoing injustice of slavery that remains a part of our society.”

Alice Rodham Puma 01.16.09 at 7:32 pm
Exactly Dances, some Women are stronger than some men, but it is all about HOW you do the lift. You lift a person onto the shoulders, and most of the strength comes from the lower body in any case. I dated a fireman for a short time and he taught me how to lift a person, and anyone can do it if they have the knowledge.

Maybe, instead of reparartions, they could use that money to increase teachers’ salaries, hire after school tutors, develop tutoring programs at schools where under performance is an issue?
I think they should also think about compensating stay at home mothers, who didnt have many options for education and working outside the home until a very late date in our history. Even if it’s minimum wage, plus time and a half for work over 40 hours a week, time and a half for Saturdays, and double time for Sundays.

then we can just point people to the FAQ, which points to different parts of the action center?

By the way, THE AUDACITY of DEMOCRACY is just under two hours long and is, I think, very enjoyable. I’m going to be making it available as a special 2-Disc set. Disc #1 is the movie itself, Disc #2 contains lots of other good stuff. Well over 3 1/2 hours of material, total.

I have been trying to figure out what to do for inaguration day. Four years ago, I was working at the YMCA as a part time lifeguard after donating thousands of hours to the Kerry campaign. I could not BELIEVE that we would vote for Bush as a country. I bought a black sweatshirt to mark the occassion and listened to it on the radio at the pool
I can’t even watch this bullshit. Im definitely going to a movie on Tuesday night. I wish it was “Frost Nixon” but that’s not out yet, here. My friend is going to Arizona tomorrow for the weekend with his friend to drink margaritas and sit by the pool in McCain’s home state. He has someone financially helping him on that deal.
\
Wednesday we’re going to see Lewis Black at the Tennessee theater. Im sure he’ll have funny stuff about EVERYONE in politics! It will be great.
Maybe I’ll see if I can get a wash, haircut, and makeup on Tuesday because 1) I need it and 2) I enjoy it.

Obama may not lift stem cell limits
By CARRIE BUDOFF BROWN | 1/16/09 8:02 PM EST
Political observers had expected him to move swiftly to reverse President Bush’s 2001 executive order.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – President-elect Barack Obama signaled Friday that he might not use his executive authority to reverse Bush-era limits on stem cell research, but instead might wait for Congress to change the policy.
Obama pledged during the campaign to lift the restrictions, and political observers had expected him to move swiftly to reverse President Bush’s 2001 executive order – most likely with his own executive order.
But the president-elect suggested Friday that he would wait for Congress to weigh in on the issue.

Obama tries to seduce Republicans
By JONATHAN MARTIN | 1/16/09 5:45 PM EST Text Size:
It’s no secret Barack Obama is trying to seduce Republicans these days. But his conservative courting runs much deeper and wider than is publicly known.
It’s no secret Barack Obama is trying to seduce Republicans these days. But his conservative courting runs much deeper and wider than is publicly known.
Obama has had meetings with his former opponent John McCain, GOP congressional leaders and some of the country’s leading conservative commentators. He’s also honoring McCain and Colin Powell in high-profile pre-inaugural dinners, where Obama is expected to toast the Republicans.
Behind the scenes, Obama and his team are working just as hard, courting prominent Republicans and conservatives through frequent phone calls, e-mails and private sit-downs.
The selection of evangelical pastor Rick Warren for the inaugural invocation and Obama’s dinner with right-of-center writers at George F. Will’s home drew significant buzz. But the transition also has quietly reached out to other prominent figures atop the Southern Baptist Church, Charles Colson’s Prison Fellowship Ministry and the Jewish Orthodox Union.

See, this is what happens when you lower the bar and hire a president who hangs out with slumlords, political fixers, racists and terrorists. I mean, what’s a little income tax evasion after all that?
Despite taxes, little heat for Geithner
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 1/15/09 7:38 PM EST Text Size:
All the ingredients of a political firestorm are in place, yet the Geithner controversy seems to be fizzling.
Rush Limbaugh is fulminating. The New York Times editorial page is indignant. All the ingredients of a political firestorm are in place.
And yet, the Timothy Geithner controversy seems to be fizzling.
It’s not that the usual voices are silent. But faced with a made-to-order personal financial scandal, there’s been only a half-hearted response in the political echo chamber, and the consensus among Washington and media elites seems to be that the economic moment is too serious to be distracted by Geithner’s tax problems.
It’s easy to imagine how things could have turned out differently.
Bill Clinton saw two nominees for attorney general go down when the public responded with fury to revelations that they’d hired illegal nannies. George W. Bush lost a cabinet nominee in the same way. And in 2006 members of Congress found themselves on the wrong end of totally unexpected outrage over a deal to lease American ports to a foreign company, Dubai Ports World.
In many or most of these cases, media commentators and even members of Congress initially reacted with shrugs. Only later, after public anger flared, did Washington join the frenzy.
To date, only a few major voices have spoken out to criticize Geithner. And if there’s a reserve of populist resentment over his appointment, it hasn’t yet erupted into the national media, as in previous nomination controversies.

Ok, I was on last night for the first time in a long time. I made some statements, that gave me the very strong impression of a few things. I’m going to come right out and ask bluntly. Does PUMA, and the PUMA members, now feel that having O as president is no big deal anymore? Do you not see how very very dangerous this is? Do you feel this is less dangerous than having GWB? Do you honestly think that this man, being president during THE most dangerous time in world (and U.S.) history is not a VERY VERY dangerous thing? I hope I misunderstood you last night…

Murphy:
Haha, is there ONE democratic principle or Democratic principle that the he will stand up for. Well no on both accounts because it was not democracy that got him selected, it was tyrany and authorotarian control. And as I have proudly stated since June 2007, he is not a Democrat. Democrats who I know and love call me crazy and ask me “well what the hell do you think he is, a Republican?” I say I don’t know what he is but he is NOT a Democrat, he looks more to be a dictator.
No, murphy, he doesn’t stand up for democratic (as in democracy) principles or Democratic (as in long-time party) principles.
I wanted to go to Bristol, va during his first speech after the primary and ask him: Mr. Obama will make the following statement “I am a Democrat” I can guarantee you, he wouldn’t do it. He would give some BS answer aobut partisian politics and that he’s the future.
I heard soemone else say that they would ask him: Mr. Obama please look this man in the eye and say “I am citizen of the United States of America.” “I have no alligence nor have ever had any alligence to any other country for any other reason at any time in my life.” They don’t think he would say that either and would instead give some BS answer about being open to the world.

DC To Erect Prostitution-Free Zones During Inaugural Weekend
January 16, 2009 05:47 PM
Washington, DC will be setting “Prostitution Free Zones” in various areas downtown during the Inauguration. This will be the most exciting city-wide clampdown on prostitutes since that time Mayor Marion Barry attempted to march them all out of the city across the 14th Street Bridge. Not to worry. These zones have an expiration date, after which Washington’s hookers can re-exert their control over the city streets.

KarenWI I am very frustrated and disillusioned too. My mother said tonight, well I hope he’s the big superman everyone’s making him out to be because we need a superman to fix this country, now.
I told her “he shouldn’t even have the option because despite the nuances, he’s not proven eligibility”
We went back a forth a few minutes and I finally said, you know what, GWB totally abused the constitution and we’re now completely ignoring whole sections of the constitution (and there’s even a constitutional question about Hillary, but I really don’t feel like debating that one tonight). Maybe it’s just time for a whole new constitutional convention.
Since attorneys have been told that the American people determine presidential eligibility when those people aren’t even given full information or disclosure. It’s outrageous.

Karen,
I think I’m one of the people you are referring to. Now that Bush has come to the end of his days in the Oval Office, I have no qualms about voicing my opinion of the job he did. Obama has yet to take office, so I cannot do the same. I will say that I’m not pleased with his actions during the transition. You are asking me to compare apples to oranges. I can’t because I am not an oracle.
clintondemocrat 01.16.09 at 9:16 pm
Someone else said to me today, that Obama’s going to get his chance to prove himself, I quipped back with he doesn’t have the right to have the chance.
Damn it. This is not effing school. This is not boy scouts where we give everyone a chance to suceed no matter what their background. Damn, there are very very very good reasons to protect, defend, and uphold the constitution, even if it means ideologically not having a president that the rest of the world is portrayed to love.
Furthermore on that topic, I think it’s becoming abundandtly clear that despite the little bear and music Obama love fest from Germany, the rest of the world is looking on this as another example of our flagrant arrogance. There is a world financial crisis and this crap is going to cost a fortune.
murphy 01.16.09 at 9:16 pm

maybe, being the relentless optimist that i am, the career democrats and staffers, and the good democrats in congress (there are still some right?) will carry this dude in the right direction and things will veer a little bit closer to a better path . . .
but who knows.
like antifish said, obama’s no democrat — and for Puma PAC that is very bad news indeed (not that we didnt already know it)
KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:20 pm
I don’t know what parts of the constitution you think Bush ran roughshod over. If you think that listening in on phone conversations of suspected terrorists isn’t VITAL to our national security, you are wrong. Just as in ALL wars they intercepted messags and decdoed them, we have to do the same here or we are dead. Other than that I have no idea what constitutional things Bush ignored. Obama, on the other hand, is planning on swearing to uphold the constitution when he already broke it by not being elible for the job as described in the constitution. He is on the side of our enemy, and against our friend. He is planning on creating an indefinate time in office by eliminating term limits and giving ACORN a job in his administration. The list goes on and on…. including the 401-k’s and so much much more.
indy 01.16.09 at 9:20 pm
I think what Karen means is there is a lot that she and others on our team have uncovered about Obama and the Dems plans to change our amendments and financial system. Each day there is a new change they want to make which would be detrimental to our country and personal freedoms.

What part of the constitution did Bush abuse?
Well we can start with having congress declare war.
Congress never declared war, they took a vote on a nonbinding resolution to give Bush the authorization to use force as a last resort. Technically, if you want to get real technical about it, he was supposed to get a declaration of war.
Number 2 dictating media: Under amendment one we have freedom of the press.
Puhlease. You want a conversation about the concerns of Obama over bush but now you want to begin an insistance that Bush did not violate the constitution.
You’re just baiting on here and I will end this conversation.

Murphy, are you saying that we violated the constitution in every previous war, when we would intercept morse code messages sent? Intercepted messengers? Listened to phone conversations? That’s what happened in every previous war. The constitution hasn’t changed. Did we violate it back in our previous wars? I don’t think so, and neither did any of our legal scholars nor previous presidents. Why, then, do they think that this war with terror is different and we can’t do the same thing using modern methods?
bqueen 01.16.09 at 9:33 pm
Clintondem: I think most of Europe looks at us more like we’re idiots. They see Americans as wasteful, greedy, shortsighted and lacking compassion (for our homeless, our sick, our poor, etc). Obama’s $$Bash won’t make sense to them since they are all well informed about our “problems at home”.

KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:34 pm
Dictating media? How did Bush dicate the media? O did, for sure, even before elected…. but how did Bush dictate the media? I’d have to go find that congressional document to see exactly how it was worded on that part. But the media? Honestly, they were all over him all the time! I’ll say one thing…. when the first Bush was president and the first Iraq war was held, every time I heard ON THE NEWS that the next day we were going to attack such and such a place I winced. Why? Because I knew the enemy heard the same show I did then and they had plenty of time to get out because the media clued them in one where we were going to attack the next day! During EVERY time of war in our history the media was NOT ALLOWED to say some things about the war including body count (to keep from giving encouragement to the enemy) and where the next strike was going to be just as a couple examples. Again, during time of war there are things that MUST be done…. so, what did Bush do re the media that every president in time of war had not done previously???

Bush’s encroachments?
first amendment — no laws can be erected that establish religion. Bush’s radical fundamentalist christian policies have attempted to establish his particular brand of Christian religion in our laws.
fourth amendment — no American citizen can be spied on by the government. forcing pregnancy on women is NOT a prerogative of the federal government.
fifth amendment — due process. one word: GUANTANOMO
6th, 7th, 8th amendment — i repeat: Guantanomo. Also renditions and secret CIA prisons.

The Global Poverty Act
The House already voted for the below bill which wipes out all of our constitutional rights. Hands over much of our sovereignty to UN and imposes a heavy tax on all Americans to be given to UN and they will then distribute what is left of our wealth to nations a people who never worked for it. It will strip our country.
If passed in the Senate, the House has already passed it, this bill would require the U.S. to increase our foreign aid by $65 BILLION per year, or $845 BILLION over the next 13 years! That’s on top of the billions of dollars in foreign aid we already pay out!
The creation of a U.N. International Criminal Court having the power to try and convict American citizens and soldiers without any protection from the U.S. Constitution.
A standing United Nations Army forcing U.S. soldiers to serve under U.N. command.
A Gun Ban on all small arms and light weapons –which would repeal our Second Amendment right to bear arms.
The ratification of the ‘ Kyoto ‘ global warming treaty and numerous other anti-American measures.
Why all the secrecy? If then Senators Obama and Biden were so proud of this legislation, then why don’t they bring it out into the light of day and let the American people have a look at it instead of hiding it behind closed doors and sneaking it through Congress for late night votes.
It is only a matter of time before this dangerous legislation reaches a floor vote in the full body of the Senate.
KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:42 pm
antiish, unless you or your mother are illegal alients, or have some reason to think the goverment would think you are terrorists, they are NOT going to listen in on your conversation. The law was only for those who have given some reason to suspect they are talking with terrorsts… such as talking to people in enemy countries, when you are an illegal alien. I have absolutely no doubt the govt isn’t listening in on mine; do you have some reason to think they are listening in on yours? The law that was passed doesn’t give that leniency, nor are they doing that…. this is one of the misconceptions of some people. indy 01.16.09 at 9:47 pm
There’s media manipulation on both sides. That doesn’t make it right.
We saw what the Dems did last year to one of their own, Hillary. Sending talking points to the MSM and them running with it like fleas. Then yesterday, the MSM pushing Obama’s stimulus plan. He wants to make the 401K taxable and treat it like Social Security. The banks being taken over, now the auto industry. All under government control. Right under our noses.
indy 01.16.09 at 9:49 pm
There are people in the streets now. In North Carolina, California, Connecticut, Florida, to name a few.
KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:51 pm
Guantanomo… ok… this is a time of war again. Was there anything like Guantanomo during the World Wars? or Vietnam war? Or any other war? I know there was in the Civil war and earlier, and I’ll bet there was for ALL of our wars. Again, this is a TIME OF WAR….. when 9/11 happened it was a declaration of war on the U.S.
I didn’t follow your statement, Murphy, about the fourth amendement… I’m having a hard time understanding how you related this to abortion….
Forcing his Christian religion? How and where? There is no place where he says everone has to be Christian. Abortion is not related to just Christianity. There are many non Chistians who think that abortion is murder; and there are many Christians who don’t think it is.
antifish, I never heard of that before. That was news to me.
antifish 01.16.09 at 9:53 pm
Karen,
The law allows them to listen to anyone they want. Why do you think Congress gave immunity from prosecution to all the big telecoms? People wanted to sue them.
Maybe Obama will decide that the Pumas are a thorn in his side, Karen, and have the FBI start listening in on your conversations. Maybe they will pick you up one night for being a subversive and put you on a plane to Lithuania where you will be tortured and made to confess. Think that’s farfetched?

KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:55 pm
The point that I originally raised, however, was not one of definding Bush as much as saying that we haven’t even SEEN the very TIP of evil yet in a president -because O isn’t sworn in yet. We are going to look at anything and everything that every president did in the past and go “wow… how did I ever think that was bad after what’s happened to americans and the U.S. now?” Indy has been posting some of them… just a FEW of the many things that O has up his sleeve. Did you also know that he is planning on redoing the banking system and getting a “one world money system”, making us in just this way (and others I didn’t mention) under the control of the Islamic countries, Russia, and France that control the U.N.? Our soldiers would also be under the control of the U.N. under another of his plans… Those were more of the links.

Have you forgotten the Japanese internment camps? Not good then and not good now!
KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:57 pm
yes, antifish, I do think that’s farfetched… for Bush. However, how O will use that is NOT farfetched. Because everybody who isn’t one of his slaves is one of his enemies as far as he’s concerned.
antifish 01.16.09 at 9:58 pm
Karen,
Bush has done it already. It’s called rendition. Google it.
KarenWI 01.16.09 at 9:59 pm

Karen,
I’m an American. I dont live in fear. I wont live in fear.
I never liked George Bush — not from the moment he tried to game the republican primaries by smearing John McCain as a “nigger lover.”
that made me so angry that I donated to mccain’s campaign and voted in a republican primary in Massachusetts for the first time in my life.
I dont want a daddy government to protect me from being afraid.
Obama was elected president by a majority of American voters. He will be sworn in on Tuesday and will serve for at least four years.
Deal with it.
If you’re going to allow fear to rule your political life then you dont deserve to be an American citizen.
antifish 01.16.09 at 10:13 pm

This will be my final post on PumaPac. The way obots love to act is to draw attention away from the evils of Obama, and get you thinking about how much you hate GWB. Just let that anger and ahtred just seethe and boil over. Just as long as Obama isn’t being looked at very carefully. Yes, that’s what I’m doing. Accusing the PumaPac of acting like obots by sticking your heads up your a$$e$ (and, again, I don’t usually use language like that, but you really have me frustrated) and just contemplating your navels while attacking your favorite attackee; while letting the most dangerous man in U.S. history get away with more outrageous things than you can even imagine now. This is, unfortunately, the very thing that will bring America down to destruction…. just concentrating on GWB and ignoring the horrors coming up on the horizon in Obama. God save America from this fiend…. but with people who are more interested in attacking the past than in protecting our future, I don’t hold out a lot of hope. Now, in parting… I wish you well, and certainly do not hate any of you. I simply look at you with tears in my eyes and sobbing in my heart that you would be so doggone BLIND to what dangers Obama is for all we hold dear, our very country’s existence as we know it, and would rather look back to someone who is now HISTORY and boil over in anger over the PAST. God bless you… and God bless America.

Go read the United Nations Charter Harry Truman signd in 1946. It effectively placed out troops under the command of the Security council. Even though we haven’t always honored that, I’m sure O will, once Israel is roundly condemned.
Hey, how can we be in economic trouble if we can afford to BORROW 150 million for O’s inauguration? Bush and Clinton combined was only 25 mil. And we were horrified then over that.
How about making reparations to native americans first? Oh, that’s right~~we were vanquished, not enslaved. Except for tribes with casinos, no wonder the people hate white and blacks alike.
Like Murphy said, Obama is the POTUS starting tuesday, and we couldn’t stop it even if he appointed Casy Anthony head of the Justice Department.

WIRETAPPING RULED LEGAL
NYTimes: FISA Court Oks Warrantless Wiretapping Law
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Civil Liberties
Posted on Thu Jan 15, 2009 at 08:05:33 AM EST
Eric Lichtblau reports that a FISA court has ruled the Protect America Act, passed by the Congress after the Bush violations of FISA became public, constitutional:
A federal intelligence court, in a rare public opinion, is expected to issue a major ruling validating the power of the president and Congress to wiretap international phone calls and intercept e-mail messages without a court order, even when Americans’ private communications may be involved.
. . . The appeals court is expected to uphold a secret ruling issued last year by the intelligence court that it oversees, known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance, or FISA, court. In that initial opinion, the secret court found that Congress had acted within its authority in August of 2007 when it passed a hotly debated law known as the Protect America Act, which gave the executive branch broad power to eavesdrop on international communications, according to someone familiar with the ruling.
Lichtblau’s article is not good in my view in that he sees the opinion as passing on the Bush Administration’s previous activities. But his own reporting states:
The opinion is not expected to directly rule on the legality of the once-secret operation authorized by President Bush between October 2001 and early 2007, which allowed the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on the international communications of Americans suspected of ties to terrorists. The disclosure of the program’s existence in The New York Times in December 2005 set off a national debate on wiretapping, privacy and the limits of presidential power. Critics charged that Mr. Bush had violated a 1978 law requiring that the government obtain a court order to listen in on Americans’ communications.
Despite reporting this, Lichtblau editorializes that:
Still, the new ruling is expected to have broad implications for federal wiretapping law, because it is the first time that any appeals court has ruled on the constitutional question of the president’s wiretapping power.
It could also influence a number of court challenges now pending in federal court in California against telecommunications companies that took part in the N.S.A. program. Last year, Congress approved legal immunity against lawsuits for the telecommunications companies, but a federal judge has yet to decide whether the lawsuits should be thrown out.
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2009/1/15/9533/54420
As a senator, Obama was very much against Bush’s presidential wiretapping power. But then he voted for the bill anyway that gave Bush the power to do so.

If you think republicans respect the constitution, perhaps a google search of “signing statements” might be worth a couple of ten minutes.
Also IMHO, blind allegiance to one’s party (or religion or single cause etc) is just one of the “good intentions” that helped pave this road to hell.

In other news, KarenWI has left in a flurry of fur because the rest of the PUMAs aren’t angsty enough for her (they’re all “obots” – I think it’s just as well jenniforhillary wasn’t around for this one), and antifish is under the impression that the Rumproasters won’t be stalking them any more. Ha!

So what, PUMA’s are human, they get scared sometimes, or freaked out, I think that was Karen’s situation tonight. I don’t think telling anybody how wrong they are is a good way to grow, we need to use words like “I disagree,” “I don’t see it that way,” “tell me why you think that,” etc.
I hope Karen comes back, I hope goanderson comes back more often, I hope to see snowtiger on here more than just once in a blue moon, cause we need diversity on this Blog.

I appreciate your comments. I watched President Bush’s speech and I didn’t catch that reference. But, I agree with you that BO’s citizenship will become a national issue at some point in time.
I’ve been listening to Mark Levin on the radio. He states that Obama’s “reinvestment” program really means he’s redistributing our nation’s wealth. How can BO create 3 to 4 million jobs, if he’s depleting the resources of private companies to give away these massive government handouts?
Do you notice how the Dems have changed their environmental mantra from “global warming” to “climate change?” BO and the Dems want to drill for oil where there is no oil. Or else, they are placing roadblocks such as having the surrounding states approve the drilling with most revenues going to the government.
I agree with Andy Martin, BO and MO have set a terrible example by their extravagant lifestyles…the Hawaiian vacation, the $100+million dollar inauguration, and so on.
One more thing, Levin said that MO is set to work with military families while BO will probably cut our national defense budget.
Bottom Line – I cannot trust the President-elect since he cheated in the caucuses, bought off the super delegates, used Acorn to cheat in the GE, and accepted illegal donations on his website.
Murphy,
Could you please post the PO address for the Puma donation!
Great job Pumas- we care about our country!

Disagreeing with her evidence and fact free fear mongering is not “devouring” her.
clintondemocrat 01.16.09 at 11:11 pm
Do you notice how the Dems have changed their environmental mantra from “global warming” to “climate change?”
Global warming is a misnomer because it really does depend on where you are. Some places are expected to get warmer, some the same and some may possibly decline. We are talking about climate change, not global warming. it is the scientists who have been pushing this.
Global warming is just not a very scientific way to talk about this issue.

Truth be told, no matter how creul, you seem to come out of lurking whenever there is an opportunity for you to rant about some injustice here, as you see it. Well, if Karen or anyone else wants to shout off at everyone and not even read people’s comments before mouthing off on tangents that often have nothing to do with the conversation or spout bush loving words then she and anyone else has to accept that people will be pissed off and retaliate. So either suck it up or shut it up is how i feel about people who don’t listen and don’t read.

oh man bmw60 bush is no more the second coming as obama is.
antifish 01.16.09 at 11:12 pm
I did not attack Karen, I only discredited her statements about Bush. She has been glorifying him and stating things that are simply not true since yesterday. Maybe she feels all nostalgic because he is leaving office, but I have nothing good to say about the guy and I won’t ever miss him no matter how terrible Obama turns out to be. I miss Clinton and I will until someone comes along who is better than him. No, even then I’ll still miss him.
Deb55 01.16.09 at 11:13 pm
Have been lurking again, and wasn’t going to get into this one,BUT…
Look-up Wikipedia…Extraordinary rendition by United States
“The CIA was granted permission to use rendition in a presidental directive signed by BILL CLINTON in 1995 and the pratice has grown sharply since the Sept. 11 attacks.”
These were well established and used BEFORE BUSH!
Look-up Wikipedia…Able Danger…”Established by BILL CLINTON in 1999 for the purpose of DATA MINING”…legally listening in on phone calls. Covered up by Clinton for fear of public out cry, as we have now.
Have a family member with FIRST hand knowledge of both, and some things that would shock us ALL.
Don’t want to step on toes, but we were used by the Socialist part of the Dem. party to get use where we are today, NOT the DEM. party we ALL believed in and fought for. Why do you think it was moved to Chicago(first time in history), and is now called the NEW DEM PARTY? This was the leftover movement from the 70’s, and they used the war and George Soros to sell this country out.
murphy 01.16.09 at 11:13 pm

karen is a monopolizer of discussion on the board. I do not want to hear her bush worship, a man she should fear as much as obama, btw. she uses her own fear to dominate discussion and remake herself the victim over and over and over again.
Karen I am sure is a very nice person, but I do not have to conform to her way of thinking. She is a grown woman who should be able to deal with some disagreement.

Just sayin’ I agree with you jenni
hillstheone 01.16.09 at 11:18 pm
Well, bmw, the problem as I see it, and I’ll speak frankly, is that when you spend a lot of time with people, like hours and hours, you can let your guard down, start to feel like you can say anything, a sort of “Group-Think” sets in, and then what have we accomplished? Nothing except another forum to feel superior and exclusive to others.
I want to feel equal, or at least, >inclusive< , not exclusive. Sure we have our basic principles, which we sometimes post up-top, about what PUMA stands for. And I think we NEED those posted, because you’ve got to start somewhere, you’ve got to have a basic understanding about the place you hang your hat.
That brings up another topic, which I’ve seen mentioned here before as a concern, and it has to do with male bashing. Hell we all know women are the low-caste citizens of the world, but does that really and truly mean we have to male-bash in order to get our point across?
Like, for example, I have seen discussions on here saying let’s all go on a boycott from sex. Really? And what would that accomplish, pray tell? Healthy human sexuality might not mean a lot to you, but if it means a lot to me, does that make me wrong? If you own your own power you own your own sexuality so you should not have to feel you need to go on a boycott to prove anything.
Same thing with your political views, if you know who you are and what you stand for, why get all threatened if someone disagrees with you, isn’t life more interesting when we can have a political discourse that leaves both parties walking away, scratching their heads, saying “huh, I think I just learned something new.”
I get uncomfortable with some of the prowls when they too frequently seem to focus on male bashing, I don’t mind Pig of the Week but Pig of the Day (even though I’m sure we wouldn’t run out) just seems like too much, and I think it alienates new people, especially the male of the species, from wanting to blog here or join.
OK I don’t want a lot of silence now to this post, so here, “Show me where I’m wrong,” will ya??!
murphy 01.16.09 at 11:20 pm
dont be silly. thoughtful republicans have all sorts of interesting, true, and persuasive things to say about limited government, fiscal responsibility, and national security.
if there are ANY thoughtful republicans out there —- PLEASE post a comment.
I know plenty of republicans — smart, good, nice people.
fundamentalist fear mongering bush worship the terrorists are all going to KILL us all baloney is NOT the hallmark of a thoughtful republican.
webfoot 01.16.09 at 11:22 pm
bmw60-if you review the comments carefully you will see that Karen makes proclamations, attempts to convert people on the blog to her way of thinking, and eventually plays the victim card the way BO plays the race card as soon as someone disagrees with what she has to say. The commments made tonight by others were stating their opinions; Karen played the victim card.
hillstheone 01.16.09 at 11:22 pm
#263 taggles, that may all be true but if it were, there are ways to talk to someone and still get your point across without attacking, aren’t there?
Also if you don’t make it a practice to blog on PUMA all day long (I’m not saying you do), you’re less likely to become offended if someone has those kinds of irritating traits, aren’t you? And even if you’re irritated, like kat once said, “who cares? someone else probably likes that poster,” or if someone doesn’t like you, why worry about it? Other bloggers like talking to you, let it pass I guess is my point.
hillstheone 01.16.09 at 11:23 pm
#267 yes webfoot but time & again I’ve seen people chased off this blog, then people say “oh they’re just being a victim,” does that make ir right?
jenniforhillary 01.16.09 at 11:24 pm
For the record, I don’t think Karen was attacked tonight…and some nights I have felt she was a tad and have stood up for her…
also, as far as male bashing goes, and I love plenty of men, WE COULD NEVER DO ENOUGH to SPEAK TO THE HORRORS of what women suffer. WE COULD NEVER SAY ENOUGH, SHOW ENOUGH, or DO ENOUGH to equal what has and is and will be done to women….
NEVER. Ever. ever.
taggles1 01.16.09 at 11:25 pm
bmw60, anyone who talks about leaving or is a chicken little the sky is falling, the blog is bad and everyone is leaving should have their comments deleted. It is disruptive. People leave, people join, people come back. it’s a blog for crying outloud.
If you think people here are so terrible no one will join and everyone is leaving, and you find no value, you should reconsider the input of your time here privately and make a decision. Many people are happy here and don’t need the diversion or the disruption of that type of blog politics. That bmw60 is what makes people not want to participate.

hillstheone 01.16.09 at 11:29 pm
antifish, yes I think Karen felt nostalgic because Bush is leaving office. But you know sometimes I get on here & I feel nostalgic about things, think how bad any of us would feel if we were already in a down mood and got chased off here… haha luckily I think most of us are stronger than that.
ANyway I’ll go back to my original 2 main points, one that we need to try to be inclusive and open to dialogue, and two we need to recruit more PUMApac members.
BTW speaking of feeling nostalgic, I just had a major “moment” of self-realization today. I realized that a BIG part of me has died! I know this might sound weird but I fully & totally accepted that a huge part of me, the part interested in politics, has changed so radically that I am only just now entering the final phase of a sort of a grieving process.
I had to cry about it quite a few times but I feel sooo much better now, everyone go have a good cry if you need to once in a while, is my advice.

Made my donation — thanks for the thanks, Murphy.
They showed Bill and Hillary dancing at their inauguration this morning and I just had to marvel at how Hillary has changed. Not in the “oh she looks much older” way, but in the “my how she has matured” way. She looked so kind of like a blank slate and almost innocent dancing with Bill and not yet having been so denigrated in the press and not knowing what was in store for her. She doesn’t even seem like the person we know today with all her character and confidence and gravitas. I mean all this in a good way. The years have been kind to her and she is so much more substantive today, it seems to me.
What are you all doing this Inauguration Day. I am leaving town tomorrow — going to Vegas where I have been invited to a free room and free Chippendales show — this just seems fitting — and avoiding the television at all costs. Vegas is a great place to do that, I figure.

Obots worship Obama, I don’t.
The rest of the post tries to project Karen’s fears of Obama onto us and ridicules us for being so blind.
I’m not afraid of Obama and I don’t share her predictions for the future.
Most importantly, I did not attack her.

Sunshinelvr 01.16.09 at 11:36 pm
Karen comes on here like a hurricane, and she appears to be trying to force her opinion on others. Then when they do not agree with her and express their opinion, she gets upset. Then she feels attacked, as many people who play the victim do. Many of us do not care for Bush as President and never will, even though we know he did accomplish some good. (i.e. no more terrorist attacks). We (most of us) do not like what we have heard of ohhewhothinksheisking so far, but we cannot give an opinion on what he does/will/will not accomplish. YET. And we all do know our freedoms are being eroded daily. Karen should calm down and realize we all have the same goals, but we will all find our own way to accomplish those goals and we will not be bullied into praising GWB. Whether Karen is republican or not, (and she takes care to tell us often that she is republican) does not matter. Keeping America safe and free is what matters. Getting upset over comparisons between GWB and pointyheadone is just useless.
taggles1 01.16.09 at 11:37 pm
karen always feels attacked. people disagree with her. this is a public forum. Is karen’s opinion the only one that matters.
is disagreement an attack?
her victimization of herself is her own projection and she constanlty uses it to manipulate conversation.
hillstheone 01.16.09 at 11:38 pm
antifish, I know what you’re saying, and I don’t blame people who felt offended by being called or compared to, obots. But do recall whenever a PUMA comes on here & their fur is all in a dander because they are frightened about something – like one night someone came on here all scared about people buying guns – bad things seem to happen. Fear seems to build upon fear, not a good environment for open dialogue or anything that will attract new members to want to post here…
I don’t really want to go on blogging forever about the situation that developed tonight w/Karen, but rather use it as a launching point to revisit exactly what the expectations are around how we treat people with other viewpoints on this Blog…

Good question. The only ones I know enough about offhand are Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
Does anyone know Cuomo’s cred? He’s for Ledbetter Act, and he’s a Clinton cabinet person and supported Hillary.
Paterson will choose Hillary’s replacement after the 20th so there is still time to lobby for women: Maloney, Gillibrand, others. But some women are arguing for CK lest Cuomo (a man!) get it. So maybe we could reassure them that Cuomo would be better than CK, if it comes down to those two.
(Imo Paterson will not choose CK.)

You have misrepresented me (someone coming on here all scared about people buying guns)
I will stand up for myself
Let’s all recall: Knoxville, TN proud home of fear mongering GOP had a news anchor at a gun shop holding an automatic weapon and talking about “stocking up” on guns and yes I have a problem with that. it shouldn’t have been on TV. Was it necessary for the news anchor (who happened to be a woman) to be on local TV holding an automatic weapon, the same type of thing we see in banded militas in the middle east, and talk about about people being afraid that the liberals will take away their guns
geeze it is really amazing how people turn one thing into something else.

Here’s a fun little tidbit that was just emailed to me:
WASHINGTON – Outgoing Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Friday he would have liked to work in the Obama administration, but instead is embarking on a life in the private sector after nearly 30 years in politics.
Dean told The Associated Press in an interview that he is weighing where next to take a career that has moved rapidly from family doctor to Vermont governor to presidential candidate to national party boss. This Wednesday, he ends a term as chairman in which Democrats recaptured the White House, seized majorities in Congress and picked up governorships.
Some of his supporters have been upset that after all he’s done for Democrats, President-elect Barack Obama did not pick him for an administration job. When asked how he felt, Dean said he would “punt on that one.”
“Obviously, it would have been great,” Dean said in a telephone interview from his home in Burlington, Vt. “But it’s not happening and the president has the right to name his own Cabinet, so I’m not going to work in the government it looks like.”
Dean said he plans to make some money delivering speeches and share ideas about campaigns and technology with center-left political parties around the world. He said politicians in other countries are very interested in the technology that he used so successfully to raise money and organize his 2004 primary campaign and that Obama took to incredible new levels for his bid.
Dean also improved technology at the Democratic National Committee, building a database that tracks voters across the country. That database is now available to Democrats running for all levels of government, and each one that uses it adds more information from the voters they contact, which helps future candidates. Oddly, Dean said, the long divisive Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton helped the party by building the database since both were using it.
Dean said the other accomplishment he’s most proud of is putting party staff in every state, even Republican strongholds. Other Washington insiders, such as Obama’s White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, ridiculed the idea at first as a waste of resources. It ended up being credited by many observers as helping to contribute to Obama’s victory over Republican John McCain in traditionally red states.
Dean said Obama was “very complimentary and kind about the 50-state strategy” when the two talked in Chicago’s Grant Park after his Election Night victory speech. Others who overheard the exchange say Obama told Dean that he couldn’t have won without him.
The party’s image has also improved during Dean’s four years as chairman. In an ABC News-Washington Post poll conducted in October 2008, 56 percent said they thought the Democrats would do a better job of coping with the problems the nation faces over the next few years, compared with just 23 percent for the Republicans. In June 2005, the Democrats had a much smaller advantage over the Republicans, 46 percent to 41 percent. And in October 2002, the Republicans held the edge, 51 percent to 39 percent for the Democrats.
Dean says a lot of the credit for Democratic electoral gains last year should go to “an extraordinarily exceptional candidate for president.” He had nothing but praise for Obama and the president-elect’s choice to run the party, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine.
Dean plans to meet this weekend with Kaine, then attend Obama’s inauguration on Tuesday. The next day at a meeting of party members, he will turn over the gavel to the Virginia governor, whom he said was one of his top choices for the job because he’s a Washington outsider.
“Tim gets that if you don’t feed the base, and get your voters identified that you can’t sustain the party,” Dean said. “And it is true that in the past, it’s been the norm for Democratic presidents to come in and take over the DNC and run it for their own uses and I think there’s a good chance that won’t happen this time.
“We put $5 million into Kaine’s campaign, so I think Kaine is acutely sensitive,” Dean said. “And so I think Tim has a particular appreciation of what a strong, diversified DNC can do.”
The party had a $15 million debt from November’s election, but Obama has helped pay that down and party officials say it should be completely paid off in the first quarter of 2009.
Dean also said he’s optimistic about the outlook for Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections, even with the tough economic times.
“The reason I’m optimistic is because the country has no place to go but up. I think 2009 will be rocky, and then we’ll start to see things get better in 2010,” Dean said. He said by then, Obama should have closed the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay that has been the source of international criticism, improved health care and be on the way out of Iraq. “If that happens, I think we can still improve our situation, even though it’s tremendous right now.”

Gwinnett County elections officials will have to hand-copy votes from at least 10,000 absentee ballots onto new ballots that can be read by a machine.
The original ballots, designed to be filled out by hand, are flawed because of a printing error. The circle beside the candidate’s name is too thick and somewhat misshapen, and consequently an optical scanning machine won’t be able to read the votes on Election Day.

DAnces with Pumas, no, Amy never said one way or the other whether she mentioned PUMA. Who knows, she probably didn’t, but I just don’t think it is fair to complain about it if you don’t know for sure.
