Low Tech for the Dialer-Uppers

in Happy Song!, open thread

for Roofingbird. An Overnight Happy Poem, which takes absolutely NO time to load, but a very long time to understand.

Consolation

All are not taken; there are left behind
Living Belovèds, tender looks to bring
And make the daylight still a happy thing,
And tender voices, to make soft the wind:
But if it were not so—if I could find
No love in all this world for comforting,
Nor any path but hollowly did ring
Where ‘dust to dust’ the love from life disjoin’d;
And if, before those sepulchres unmoving
I stood alone (as some forsaken lamb
Goes bleating up the moors in weary dearth)
Crying ‘Where are ye, O my loved and loving?’—
I know a voice would sound, ‘Daughter, I AM.
Can I suffice for Heaven and not for earth?’

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

By the way, I do have another word to replace “Pigs” ‘Parasites’…They do nothing more than feed off another and contaminate everything they come in contact with….

3

taggles1 01.07.09 at 10:00 pm

what’s wrong with pigs.

do that many people have pigs as pets?

4

TrishfromCanada 01.07.09 at 10:03 pm

I like the pig award, of course you could always call it “the arse award”, but I think pig award speaks volumes

5

TrishfromCanada 01.07.09 at 10:04 pm

ohhh my favourite line from “Babe” is “that’ll do pig, that’ll do” i say that all the time!

6

I prefer pigs … instant recognition of the implication.

DancesWithPumas 01.07.09 at 10:18 pm

whoa… I thought the quote of the day was still cinie’s, but it’s from Nelson Mandela (via Heidi Li):
“I cannot pinpoint a moment when I became politicized, when I knew I would spend my life in the liberation struggle. … I had no epiphany, no singular revelation, no moment of truth, but a steady accumulation of a thousand slights, a thousand indignities, a thousand unremembered movements, produced in me an anger, a rebelliousness, a desire to fight the system that imprisoned our people. There was no particular day on which I said, From henceforth I will devote myself to the liberation of my people; instead I found myself doing so, and could not do otherwise.” A Long Walk To Freedom, p. 95.

OK, I’ve been gone most of the day…. re Chris Matthew saying he isn’t going to run. Yeah, let’s wait and see. Did you know there’s a video of Obama saying HE wasn’t going to run for POTUS??? This is something that’s a pretty common ploy to say they aren’t running, and then jumping in later… LOL.

Re Nelson Mandela quote where he said he didn’t plan on doing it, but ” “…instead I found myself doing so, and could not do otherwise.”… that’s probably why some of us- like myself- end up coming back here even when sometimes there are such strong posts showing I’m not wanted. “I can not do otherwise” for some crazy reason. Nuts? Maybe….. Masochist?… no.

Hey Mountainsong..It’s part of my job here in the SOS Forum Sphere………. It just makes me sick to think Women by the Million’s continue on like nothing is going on…And, yet when something happends to them…Boy, they wake up…But, only for the moment and then they go back to what they are used to…Very Sad… :( So, let CHANGE that…Afterall, you are on the SOS Team….

What letter are you working on, that you mentioned on the “private” era site?
Can you post your response on that site?

KarenWI 01.07.09 at 10:33 pm

I don’t know about Phillypuma male, female, or what he/she wants… BUT… it does seem really strange to me when someone gets all their information from Al Franken, believes him totally, and can’t see the really odd things going on in this MN recount. I’m hearing all over on tv about more ballots than voters. Don’t remember if it was on O’Reilly or Hannity, but they were saying specific numbers in one city or something… saying there were 177 (if I remember right) more votes there (xpecific number!) than voters. How can anybody look at this and not see FRAUD??? This smells of what happened during the Dem Primaries, when there were more votes than voters in some areas. How long can this sort of thing go on and not get “caught” and stopped? It has ACORN’s fingerprints all over it….. Oh, by the way, remember how in the initial “bailout”- the first one that was passed- they at first wanted a huge percentage of it to go to ACORN- and that was stopped (thank God) by the repubs in the congress?? ACORN should be destroyed… but, now of course, they are just going to be rewarded more and more now that O is “selected” and Pelosi and Reid (among some others) are in “power”…. (sigh)…. :(

—————-
Murphy posted the Mandela quote as the ‘quote of the day’ (left hand column (sidebar), scroll up)) … I was just repeating it to be sure everyone would read it. Too good to miss.

28

KarenWI 01.07.09 at 10:35 pm

yup mountainsong…. seems like no matter what party we’re talking about, they all like to say one thing publicly and do another privately. That reminds me a bit of a cartoon I saw once where it gave a definition of “foot” as a “politician’s pacifier”….

29

mountainsong 01.07.09 at 10:36 pm

Alice Paul rewrote the ERA in 1943 to what is now called the “Alice Paul Amendment,” reflecting the 15th and the 19th Amendments: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” But the labor movement was still committed to protective workplace laws, and social conservatives considered equal rights for women a threat to the existing power structure.

30

KarenWI 01.07.09 at 10:37 pm

Everyone in congress- whether Repub or Dem- who has gotten large contributions from ACORN, or paid large amounts TO ACORN… should be picked up by the scruff of their necks and kicked out onto the street….

32

mountainsong 01.07.09 at 10:39 pm

The “odd things going on in MN” are due to the fact we are now living under a total Dictatorship and not everyone has awakened to that fact….YET!

33

KarenWI 01.07.09 at 10:41 pm

Mountainsong, some of these “odd things going on in MN” sound an awful lot like what happened in the Dem Primary when O stole the nomination from Hillary. So… it was actually going on then already, BEFORE the Dictator was even “selected”! LOL…

34

DancesWithPumas 01.07.09 at 10:42 pm

“it does seem really strange to me when someone gets all their information from Al Franken,…”
No one ever said that on this blog. Stop twisting.

35

mountainsong 01.07.09 at 10:43 pm

http://www.equalrightsamendment.org/era.htm

In the 1960s, over a century after the fight to end slavery fostered the first wave of the women’s rights movement, the civil rights battles of the time provided an impetus for the second wave. Women organized to demand their birthright as citizens and persons, and the Equal Rights Amendment rather than the right to vote became the central symbol of the struggle.

Finally, organized labor and an increasingly large number of mainstream groups joined the call for the ERA, and politicians reacted to the power of organized women’s voices in a way they had not done since the battle for the vote.

The Equal Rights Amendment passed the U.S. Senate and then the House of Representatives, and on March 22, 1972, the proposed 27th Amendment to the Constitution was sent to the states for ratification. But as it had done for every amendment since the 18th (Prohibition), with the exception of the 19th Amendment, Congress placed a seven-year deadline on the ratification process. This time limit was placed not in the words of the ERA itself, but in the proposing clause.

Like the 19th Amendment before it, the ERA barreled out of Congress, getting 22 of the necessary 38 state ratifications in the first year. But the pace slowed as opposition began to organize – only eight ratifications in 1973, three in 1974, one in 1975, and none in 1976.

Arguments by ERA opponents such as Phyllis Schlafly, right-wing leader of the Eagle Forum/STOP ERA, played on the same fears that had generated female opposition to woman suffrage. Anti-ERA organizers claimed that the ERA would deny woman’s right to be supported by her husband, privacy rights would be overturned, women would be sent into combat, and abortion rights and homosexual marriages would be upheld. Opponents surfaced from other traditional sectors as well. States’-rights advocates said the ERA was a federal power grab, and business interests such as the insurance industry opposed a measure they believed would cost them money. Opposition to the ERA was also organized by fundamentalist religious groups.

Pro-ERA advocacy was led by the National Organization for Women (NOW) and ERAmerica, a coalition of nearly 80 other mainstream organizations. However, in 1977, Indiana became the 35th and so far the last state to ratify the ERA. That year also marked the death of Alice Paul, who, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony before her, never saw the Constitution amended to include the equality of rights she had worked for all her life.

I was just kidding about Lucy. I doubt I missed a single episode of Lucy and Ricky.

46

KarenWI 01.07.09 at 10:56 pm

hillstheone… #43… back before the days of video games, when kids went outside and played games outside most of the day (my generation, for example, well over 50 years ago) kids were not fat. Now, of course, that can’t be said about us after we hit middle age- at least not me, LOL. When I was younger I could eat like a horse and never put on weight. Back in college they had two entrees… I would take BOTH, along with the soup of the day and a dessert…. and was thin. Then, after college, something happened. All of a sudden all I’d have to do is smell dessert and put on another 3 pounds. This was in spite of the fact that at that time I was teaching in the public school, standing all day, and very active in front of the classes (as choir director and band director I was jumping around and waving my arms a lot, LOL)

Abbott and Costello’s “who’s on first” is CLASSIC! ..and nobody, even today, can “do” it in quite the same way to get as many laughs as they did! I’ve seen a lot of their movies; but I think their “who’s on first” routine as the movies all beat!

I apologize for the infrequency of my visits over here of late. I’m a bit swamped, but I had to take the time to express tremendous appreciation for the PUMAs in fighting off the idjits who have been assaulting The Confluence.

I did manage to do one of the Prowls today, and I am reading over here daily. I think, by the way, that some of the insane conduct over the weblog awards is due to the fact that a) the kool-aid drinkers are realizing that P.E. Obama is not who they duped themselves or allowed themselves to be duped into believing he is and so b) they are lashing out at PUMAs and their blogs because c) that is easier than facing up to their own poor judgment.

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 12:32 am

Was going to say that Marblemout got 6 inches of rain, just this evening alone. That’s ALOT of water coming down the creeks and rivers. I’ve seen that kind of water push boulders downstream that are 6-8 ft in diameter. And old growth fir and cedar and hemlock all bob like corks in the river smashing everything it their way.

The teams listed also have private forums wher ethey discuss strategies, etc., but, you can;t get into those unless you are a team member.

SouthernGAL68 01.08.09 at 12:30 am Thanks for the warning. One day I stumbled on a YouTube vid of “The Obama Shuffle”. It’s kind of a neat ‘hustle’ kinda dance that just needs a different name. lol

Can you imagine this in the White House?

Dances … Thank you! I will take a good look through them tonight and choose from one of the two. I have had to work late two nights in a row, so I will let you know something by the weekend or sooner. I will need my e-mail, so I will get Audra to set it up for me in the next day or so.

You are an hour ahead of me, so I know that it is late in NY – thanks for answering my post.

Yea … be very careful that you “VIRUS PROTECTION” has NOT expired and/or you have enough protection. It was $ 400.00 plus to get it fixed. Heck, I should have just bought another computer.

Mountainsong, the paper you cited, the Jerusalem Post, used to be the official mouthpiece of the Israeli government. The last I heard it had been sold to arch conservative Rupert Murdoch. I’m not saying don’t read it, just be aware of their possible bias when you do. In the Middle East to have to read more than one source to understand anything. Unfortunately I can’t recommend any good Palestinian source. They are pathetic at defending their own interests. Maybe the Jordan Times, which is owned by the Jordanian Government through their social security administration. That guy they talk about, Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah, is a real piece of work, I heard an interview with him once on NPR that was blood curdling.

If your computer runs slow, did you do all the maintenance stuff like the quick disk clean, the free virus programs like Norton and bitdefender, the antispyware programs like spybot search and destroy and ad-aware? Look in the computer geek section here for a bunch of free tools to keep your system clean. Then you might think about doing a defrag if you haven’t done one recently, but they can be long.

I just had a system crash tonight for the first time ever. Yeah, I was on the bot sites, probably coincidence, right?

103

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 1:14 am

I did disc clea earlier this evening and thought I’d defrag when I go to bed.

TrishfromCanada 01.08.09 at 1:00 am Maybe because it’s an anti- Obama site. Are you in a space tonight?

104

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 1:17 am

Way back in the primaries, there were warnings online about going to Obot sites as they could be infected. Some of them are intelligent enought techies to actually perfor hit-and-run drive-by infections of websites. So I just try to keep to a few reliable places. I don’t even do MySpace or Facebook.

105

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 1:18 am

Nijma 01.08.09 at 1:10 am ~~~I don’t heven have a clue what a truly unbiased site would even be.

106

Nijma 01.08.09 at 1:20 am

The Obama Shuffle huh, that’s what Blagojevich is doing right now. Ha, ha. The tune sounds like “Wade in the Water” a baptismal sort of spiritual. They used to do line dances like that at union parties when I was in a different union. They better not do that one on company time, but it looks a little too complex to do at a party, so maybe the world will be spared.

107

Nijma 01.08.09 at 1:20 am

my first defrag on windows98 took 8 hours.

108

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 1:22 am

Kewl, I don’t have to defrag right now.

109

mountainsong 01.08.09 at 1:25 am

Gee whiz~~~8 hours.
No way could I do that dance~~~but I thought the kid in the pink shirt has cute moves.

110

lol I’m getting to where I have so much stuff on my favorites I need a data base manager and index.

111

Nijma 01.08.09 at 1:28 am

mountainsong, I don’t know of “a truly unbiased site”, everyone has an ax to grind and certain “facts” they put out front and others they don’t mention. When you read them all it just sounds like a bunch of kids yelling “he hit me” “no, he hit me first” down through the generations. The first person who hit the first other person isn’t even alive anymore, but their descendants just keep hitting each other. A lot of my students were Palestinain, and they had stories about their homes they lost. Back in the 30’s when there was a war, they all locked their doors, ran away and came back when the fighting was over. But in ‘48 and ‘67 and they couldn’t go back. They still have the keys though, and when the old people die they ask for the key and they die with the key in their hand.

George Bush missed an opportunity to recognize the Palestinian State when he first became president. It would have changed everything.

Obama’s Africa Problem

by Max Blumenthal

Team Obama likes to cite (Rick) Warren’s work on AIDS in Africa to combat criticism about the controversial pastor. But how does burning condoms in the name of Jesus save lives?

…Warren’s defense against charges of intolerance ultimately depends upon his ace card: his heavily publicized crusade against AIDS in Africa. Obama senior advisor David Axelrod cited Warren’s work in Africa as one of “the things on which [Obama and Warren] agree” on the December 28 episode of Meet the Press. Warren may be opposed to gay rights and abortion, the thinking goes, but he tells evangelicals it is their God-given duty to battle one of the greatest pandemics in history. What could be wrong with that?

…However, an investigation into Warren’s involvement in Africa reveals a web of alliances with right-wing clergymen who have sidelined science-based approaches to combating AIDS in favor of abstinence-only education. More disturbingly, Warren’s allies have rolled back key elements of one of the continent’s most successful initiative, the so-called ABC program in Uganda. Stephen Lewis, the United Nations’ special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, told the New York Times their activism is “resulting in great damage and undoubtedly will cause significant numbers of infections which should never have occurred.”

Warren’s man in Uganda is a charismatic pastor named Martin Ssempa. …Ssempe enjoys close ties to his country’s First Lady, Janet Museveni, and is a favorite of the Bush White House…. Ssempa’s stunts have included burning condoms in the name of Jesus and arranging the publication of names of homosexuals in cooperative local newspapers while lobbying for criminal penalties to imprison them.

Dr. Helen Epstein, a public health consultant who authored the book, The Invisible Cure: Why We’re Losing The Fight Against AIDS In Africa, met Ssempa in 2005. Epstein told me the preacher seemed gripped by paranoia, warning her of a secret witches coven that met under Lake Victoria. “Ssempa also spoke to me for a very long time about his fear of homosexual men and women,” Epstein said. “He seemed very personally terrified by their presence.”

When Warren unveiled his global AIDS initiative at a 2005 conference at his Saddleback Church, he cast Ssempa as his indispensable sidekick…

132

BrianH 01.08.09 at 4:23 am

Watching the Obots caper and chant and rant, I REALLY regret being made to live through such “interesting times”. If Omposter is inaugurated and gets up a full head of steam, it will be about as devastating to the US and West as nuclear war. IMO, his and his backers’ intention is to crash the West so badly it can never recover.

Even Marx was smart enough to want to keep the advancements the bourgeoisie bring in for the benefit of all, not that his system has or had a prayer of maintaining, much less advancing, them.

Making the US Gov’t a playground for one-worlders will create a dystopia like I shudder to imagine.

Murphy you might be right about the ads on the websites, I would add my reason. I started on dial up at the beginning of the election race, and kept to it even though it drove me crazy. I wanted to see what the rest of the country sees. So I kept the blongers and blingers off because they take f**king forever to load. For example, it takes up to 15 minutes to load the blog talk now instead of the older 6-8 minutes. If you get a drop, this may be one reason why.

I don’t know, I just can’t get behind being ’supremely grateful’ for Puma men. That would be like singing eternal high praises for the man who cooks a meal, or changes a diaper, and receives praises year round for doing so, while we take for granted, because ‘it’s just expected’,
the woman who does the same chores a thousand times per year

Everyone gets points for doing the right thing… but why give anyone extrapointshighpraisesupremegratitude for doing the right thing based on their gender? Would singing high praises be a symptom of never expecting men to do the right thing… and therefore an insult to them?
Anyway, why fawn? The inverse ratio is tiresome.

I really don’t see Puma men carrying much of, or any extra load anyway, (and at least one hasn’t carried any of the load). Before anything is said, I understand the reasons of those with medical constraints who are unable to do heavy lifting, so that’s a non issue.

Aside from that, grateful for the Pumas I like and respect, women and men.

156

sue66 01.08.09 at 9:52 am

There is a very concrete reason why I am so enthusiastic about our fight against violence towards women. My daughter, Dana, was involved with a guy a few years ago. He was emotionally and verbally abusive towards her. She couldn’t see it and didn’t want to hear it. All we could do was be ready for a call from her. It came one very cold February morning. She was trying to walk home, barefoot and wrapped in a blanket. She was sleeping when he grabbed her and tried to strangle her. She fought back and was lucky enough to get out. Despite a no contact order the jerk managed to contact her and somehow convince her that it was all a mistake. This incident really changed her attitude. She is married and has a little girl of her own. She also has in place an exit plan. for her and her daughter. So far there has been little indication she will need it, but fully trusting is hard. We are the exit plan of a friend of hers that lives a few houses away. We told this girl, any time, night or day.
Most of her friends have set up exit plans as a result of what happened to her.

“Is puma the new jew – a people persecuted for their beliefs, and eventually for their failure to fall in line, and follow the chosen one?

Now, I am not saying that PUMAS have been subjected to the horrors of the holocaust, or the years and years of persecution, but I thought it was a snappy intro that might grab your attention.”

I love the poems. Please keep them coming. Browning is another example of a woman condemned to her husband’s larger shadow. He wrote long narrative poetry while she only wrote love sonnets, her most famous being “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” But there was obviously a lot of feminism in her blood.

160

admin 01.08.09 at 10:04 am

that’s right oneilma — but Barrett actually wrote almost every kind of poem. Aurora Leigh is a very long poem which uses nearly every element of epic poetry except subject matter — rather than writing about war or the founding of a state, Barrett wrote about the personal journey and struggles of a female writer (herself, barely disguised). aurora leigh is a fascinating example of a woman of immense talent audaciously changing a literary form to suit her needs.

Will keep the poems coming– thanks!
