The comment I made at the YouTube site was that I wished there was a list of the companies that made these images.
Obviously the “snuff” images are very disturbing, and who knows what role they have in glamorizing the murder or young attractive women, or for that matter, any women. Only slightly less disturbing are the violent images.
Then there are the sexually degrading ones. This group is a little harder to characterize, because there are people who voluntarily do some odd things. The fact that the models are getting paid to make the images sort of takes the voluntary aspect away though. Is their choice to model or starve?
So that’s the “black list”. Is there a “white list” of positive advertisements?

Murphy: I am here only briefly because it is late..but I must say if PumaPac gets nothing else done in 2009, we must assure that the pragmatic contacts in Congress and with other groups that have actively worked on legislation must be made, must be begun, must be acted on, Murphy, to assure that Louisa’s Law is on the books,..I do not care how long it takes. This act must happen and we must make sure it does..Period…This ACT MUST HAPPEN and WE MUST Take the Lead on it..WE must.

look at the video, mountainsong,… these aren’t just two-bit ads in some backwoods pennysaver put together by some drooling toothless wacko. They are very expensive ads for expensive glossy magazines. What company *wants* to be portrayed like that?
mountainsong 01.05.09 at 12:04 am
Meeting?
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:04 am
Mountainsong: Yes. Someone on Betty Jean’s blog said the story should be sent to Nancy Grace. Now I know she can be sometime over the top but in fact this should be sent to her…as I think it is something she might go with…any thoughts on that>
goofsmom 01.05.09 at 12:06 am
NewOrleansPuma
My 2 cents for what its worth… I think it should go out to Nancy Grace and Greta.
I was at BettyJean’s site earlier… The video made me just sick!…
mountainsong 01.05.09 at 12:08 am
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:04 am She might be persuaded. We need a break from Casey Anthony. Are you suggest writing a letter to ask, or more like a prowl?
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:08 am
Nijma: What company? Clearly these companies who paid a lot of money for these ads. Clearly they understand that the ads sell.
Well…who buys these products? That I would like some demographics on…Is the male who gives the product?…to impress and look like he spends a lot of money on his woman?
Isthe female who having not enough vaild self identity needs to align herself with the pseudosophisticated material items of this overmaterialized culture? Is it both? Probably, but demographics regarding the ads would be of use..do you not agree>
Know where we could find that?
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:11 am
Mountainsong and Goofsmom: Well now that you mention it..maybe a Prowl or a letter..whatever might work best.

NewOrleansPuma and Mountainsong,
I think both… also since I am staying away from MSM… Are these the only 2 we can think of… what about Geraldo?
IMHO we need to widen the number of people we send to. Not the entire list of MSM but a select core few that cover crime stories.

NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:21 am
Nancy Grace is a former prosecutor and while I do not see her often, I know she really is adamant re criminals who get off or get little this or that or laws that are not sufficient. Ithink this needs to be thought through and laid out in a manner that gives her a clear overview of the nature of this particular set of events and the lack of a federal law that includes whatever it is that Betty Jean thinks a law should include. I am not saying we should do this right NOW..well..there is Betty Jean’s situtaion to consider. I am simply wanting to get people to imagine how we need to follow up and on re a law and the appropriatetiming of it all..

Good evening. I just got back from a trip to the Northeast. The weather was very cold and we also got some snow flurries.
I’ve been trying to catch up on reading the posts. I cannot believe that Tim Kaine will be the head of the DNC – he is no better than Dean. He is Dean’s twin IMHO. Judas has removed his name – KARMA baby. McAuliffe running for VA Gov. – I’m neutral on this one. Blago and a Senate showdown coming our way – pass the popcorn. This is going to be a bumpy ride.
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:27 am
I guess I feel that if we do not support Betty Jean in an ongoing, pragmatic, doggedegly way in her desire to get a law of some kind relating to the holes in state laws and/or whatever else she is imagining, then we aren’t worth a crap…period.
If any human being, any woman deserves, if any human reality deserves this kind of committment, the it is this one and this one for herself and her daughters.

Nancy Grace is a former prosecutor
—————–
I recall one program a few years ago when Nancy Grace explained when her passion for law/prosecution was set aflame. Her fiance was murdered a few months before they were to be wed. Don;t recall what happened to the murderer, or even if they ever determined who he was. That’s when she decided to go to law school. Could be wrong on some of the details, it was a while ago, but that’s the gist of it as I recall.
NewOrleansPuma 01.05.09 at 12:35 am
Murphy: Are you here? Please put this conversation re Betty Jean and a law in your brain and let us all think upon and work through as we go along how and what we will do to doggedly and consistently followup with working on a law, when Betty Jean can do that. This woman and her daughters are seared into my soul forever and I do not wish to leave this earth without knowing that a direction or and a law of some kind attempts to fill the gaps she is imagining along with I think others who have worked on various legislative changes in these areas. Since so called domestic abuse is a state issue, this will not be an easy territory to navigate and it will take a lot of time…well you get the point and I am sure you do not need me to tell you.

I think I pissed of Big Brother Craig with the FEC activities. I had been posting Craigslist with the following:
Obama Spent $741 MIL and reported $485 MIL in Donations
BO spent $741 million on his presidential campaign (www.fec.gov) including $309 million for Broadcast Media (www.opensecrets.org). But he reported donors for only $485 million to the FEC.
Now, if you are thinking that the $255 missing millions are donations under the reporting limit, forget it. The $485 million reported contained alot of those as well.
Who donated the other $255 million?
How will he pay them back?

NOP, a list of ALL the companies in the add with an indication of what kind of ad they sponsored.
I suspect a big part of advertising is to get attention amid a sea of other ads, and something like that certainly makes you look twice. Their whole marketing plan/research info is probably secret. It doesn’t matter. Remember the Abercrombie & Fitch nonsense? Some women were actually buying the shirts that said something to the effect of “I am a big dummy.” Whatever they gained in reputation for edginess, they probably lost more for being jerks and ridiculing their customer base. The point is to publicize it as an unacceptable image and hopefully start a dialog about how women are portrayed by media, including advertisers. The advertisers are probably more vulnerable than, for example, MSNBC, plus there are probably some people within the organization who have mothers, daughters, sisters, etc. who can think of the right arguments to bring to the people making those advertising decisions. A campaign just provides that external pressure that nudges people to do what they knew was right all along.

Louisa’s attacker–Does anyone have any knowledge of whether there is something that will prevent someone from killing once their violent tendencies have been spotted? A hammer–that doesn’t sound like the smartest person in the world, or one I would want to share an elevator with, but not necessarily a stalker either–although there are probably a wealth of other details that haven’t been made public. Is there any way to spot these people or get them counseling or evaluation before something happens–or does counseling even work?

DWP, I know you’re angry about the terrible waste of life and the pain that Louisa’s family is going through, while the guy that did it is strutting around like Joe Cool, but most men are just not violent by nature. And a good many more have pretty long fuses, and would not go off without being drunk or in the middle of an argument or both. And I don’t believe in capital punishment–violence by an individual doesn’t not excuse violence by the state. Besides, do you really want something as fast as a bullet? Wouldn’t it be more fun to make them go though detox or something? Or make them talk to someone like Oprah about their feelings?

FlBarbara, what 23 years, didn’t he threaten? or what did happen? I can understand the rage against the sheer stupidity of it all, and the sheer waste, but can we go beyond that and try to identify exactly what happened that the system broke down? You can’t lock up everyone who has a penis–unless you’re into what’s on that video up there…and you can’t have effective rage until you have a clear objective….

“Schumer: Senate should seat Minn. Dem. Al Franken
By AMY FORLITI – 10 hours ago
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New York Sen. Charles Schumer said Sunday that Democrat Al Franken is the clear winner in Minnesota’s Senate race and should be seated as soon as possible. But a leading Republican lawmaker said calling the race for Franken would be premature.
Schumer, who until recently was the head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, made his statement a day after Minnesota elections officials completed the re-count. The latest numbers showed Franken with a 225-vote lead over Republican Norm Coleman.”

Hiya Ario, how’s it going? totally off-topic but my youngest has decided that she will be a professional musician when she grows up. which I’m extremely happy about. She’s been mesmerized by music since she was a tiny baby. Being 100% unmusical myself, I will take no credit.
thanks for the links bqueen. Code Pink is an interesting approach. Zee has worked with them (I believe) and has some excellent insight into their efforts.

Good Morning PUMA Nation!
Good for your daughter Murphy, I hope she has every success. Is that classical or popular music? Either way I hope it works out well. I love music and am a little bit musical myself but not at a proffessional level.

I stopped listening to Ed Hales show a while back because I think he tells too many lies, but I would be intrigued if anyone knows whether this announcement was for real? Or was it just another in a long line of dissapointing “announcements”

Does any of this sound familiar? Bring back memories of the primaries? What about FL2000 recount? Same ol’ same ol’

Funny Business in Minnesota
In which every dubious ruling seems to help Al Franken.
Strange things keep happening in Minnesota, where the disputed recount in the Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken may be nearing a dubious outcome. Thanks to the machinations of Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and a meek state Canvassing Board, Mr. Franken may emerge as an illegitimate victor.
Mr. Franken started the recount 215 votes behind Senator Coleman, but he now claims a 225-vote lead and suddenly the man who was insisting on “counting every vote” wants to shut the process down. He’s getting help from Mr. Ritchie and his four fellow Canvassing Board members, who have delivered inconsistent rulings and are ignoring glaring problems with the tallies.
Under Minnesota law, election officials are required to make a duplicate ballot if the original is damaged during Election Night counting. Officials are supposed to mark these as “duplicate” and segregate the original ballots. But it appears some officials may have failed to mark ballots as duplicates, which are now being counted in addition to the originals. This helps explain why more than 25 precincts now have more ballots than voters who signed in to vote. By some estimates this double counting has yielded Mr. Franken an additional 80 to 100 votes.
This disenfranchises Minnesotans whose vote counted only once. And one Canvassing Board member, State Supreme Court Justice G. Barry Anderson, has acknowledged that “very likely there was a double counting.” Yet the board insists that it lacks the authority to question local officials and it is merely adding the inflated numbers to the totals.
In other cases, the board has been flagrantly inconsistent. Last month, Mr. Franken’s campaign charged that one Hennepin County (Minneapolis) precinct had “lost” 133 votes, since the hand recount showed fewer ballots than machine votes recorded on Election Night. Though there is no proof to this missing vote charge — officials may have accidentally run the ballots through the machine twice on Election Night — the Canvassing Board chose to go with the Election Night total, rather than the actual number of ballots in the recount. That decision gave Mr. Franken a gain of 46 votes.
Meanwhile, a Ramsey County precinct ended up with 177 more ballots than there were recorded votes on Election Night. In that case, the board decided to go with the extra ballots, rather than the Election Night total, even though the county is now showing more ballots than voters in the precinct. This gave Mr. Franken a net gain of 37 votes, which means he’s benefited both ways from the board’s inconsistency.
And then there are the absentee ballots. The Franken campaign initially howled that some absentee votes had been erroneously rejected by local officials. Counties were supposed to review their absentees and create a list of those they believed were mistakenly rejected. Many Franken-leaning counties did so, submitting 1,350 ballots to include in the results. But many Coleman-leaning counties have yet to complete a re-examination. Despite this lack of uniformity, and though the state Supreme Court has yet to rule on a Coleman request to standardize this absentee review, Mr. Ritchie’s office nonetheless plowed through the incomplete pile of 1,350 absentees this weekend, padding Mr. Franken’s edge by a further 176 votes.
Both campaigns have also suggested that Mr. Ritchie’s office made mistakes in tabulating votes that had been challenged by either of the campaigns. And the Canvassing Board appears to have applied inconsistent standards in how it decided some of these challenged votes — in ways that, again on net, have favored Mr. Franken.
The question is how the board can certify a fair and accurate election result given these multiple recount problems. Yet that is precisely what the five members seem prepared to do when they meet today. Some members seem to have concluded that because one of the candidates will challenge the result in any event, why not get on with it and leave it to the courts? Mr. Coleman will certainly have grounds to contest the result in court, but he’ll be at a disadvantage given that courts are understandably reluctant to overrule a certified outcome.
Meanwhile, Minnesota’s other Senator, Amy Klobuchar, is already saying her fellow Democrats should seat Mr. Franken when the 111th Congress begins this week if the Canvassing Board certifies him as the winner. This contradicts Minnesota law, which says the state cannot award a certificate of election if one party contests the results. Ms. Klobuchar is trying to create the public perception of a fait accompli, all the better to make Mr. Coleman look like a sore loser and build pressure on him to drop his legal challenge despite the funny recount business.
Minnesotans like to think that their state isn’t like New Jersey or Louisiana, and typically it isn’t. But we can’t recall a similar recount involving optical scanning machines that has changed so many votes, and in which nearly every crucial decision worked to the advantage of the same candidate. The Coleman campaign clearly misjudged the politics here, and the apparent willingness of a partisan like Mr. Ritchie to help his preferred candidate, Mr. Franken. If the Canvassing Board certifies Mr. Franken as the winner based on the current count, it will be anointing a tainted and undeserving Senator.

After watching that video, I will no longer flip past pages of ads in magazines, I’m going to be hunting companies that debase women to sell anything. Have you checked out the names of some of the perfumes a lot of these ads hustle? Maitresse, love in black, insolence, dirty englishmen, full metal jacket, insurrection, juicy, seduction, sexual – ad nauseum. About the only thing they haven’t done is name a perfume or cologne rape. It is so sickening.

I watched the video and was moved to action. I have been emailing the StarTribune newspaper writer who is reporting on the Annshalike Hamilton murder (no repsonse yet) and sent this video link. I suggest others send this video link to advertisers and magazine publishers.

RE: 15-year old pregnant teen (Annshalike Hamilton) murdered in Mpls, MN
Okay, the writer (a male) of this letter-to-the-editor probably meant well, but he wants to attribute the murder to God not being awake on the watch…
A SAD INDIGNITY
Fatal beating is haunting end to a young life
The story of 15-year-old Annshalike Hamilton, whose beaten and frozen body was found in the garage of a vacant house in Minneapolis, is incredibly sad, made even more tragic by the fact that she was pregnant (front page, Dec. 30).
The news brought to mind a song written by Tom Waits titled “Georgia Lee,” which asks the question “Why wasn’t God watching?” Both the song and the story of Annshalike bring me to tears, and although I never met her, I will think of Annshalike every time I listen to that song.

sue #105,
not so fast. how about a perfume from Puff Daddy called “Unforgivable Woman” with an ad depicting an elevator rape scene?
http://nowsmellthis.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/4/20/2893661.html
OR, how about a proposed perfume called “Rape” that was pulled when New York NOW raised an outcry in 1986
http://www.etext.org/Politics/MIM/mn/mn.php?issue=022
and there iS a perfume called “ravage” which is a “pretty” term for rape.

NOP, #6 — yes, I agree. there is a larger Pumasphere group that is working on drafting a version of Louisa’s Law for New Jersey. Puma PAC is part of that effort and will do all that we can to support it.
Starting locally is a very good idea, in this case New Jersey, which, accoriding to Pumas who live there, has a very good contingent of women legislators (and some good men too) who they believe will be VERY open to this law and will respond with support and resources. A successful state version of a law is often an excellent “proving ground” from which to expand it to other states, or even to the federal level.
i will keep everyone posted.

Hi guys-
I haven’t been here in awhile but pleased to see the hard work still going on.
The democrats continue to embarrass and disappoint me every day.
Bill Richardson, Harry Reid, Al Franken- what can I say?

Have not logged in to post lately but wanted to pop in and say “Happy New Year Pumas” as the beat goes on. Everyday when I read the blog or the internet there is more fraud in the democratic party. How shameful? Ricahrdson, karma is silent and carry a big stick. Peace and cheers to you all for a healthy, safe, and uplifting New Year.

Just a couple of notes before I head upstairs…
Chanel advertised a perfume by depicting a man punching a woman in the stomach so that she dropped the bottle of perfume they were advertising!
I wish it had been in the youtube video— it has forever tarnished ALL Chanel products in my mind, and I will speak out against them forever.
But thanks for posting this video, and the link to the group/s involved. I will be passing on all this info.
And, murphy, congrats on the daughter’s musical bent. We need more women musicians. Musicians are a pretty happy go lucky lot, too! Probably because they are so appreciated for their talent. My son inherited a fair deal of his father’s talents in composing but is more interested in writing, alas. There is no artist more lowly and without regard in this world than a writer. As he has noted and so is studying a more lucrative field in order to pursue his art in leisure.
As to CODEPINK’s methods, if PUMAs ever take it to the streets, we could benefit from following their lead. And this is not the first time they’ve taken the fight to Obama. They’re very focused in their goals.

MKfromLA and I are working on a gigantic spread sheet of contact info so when we need to get out a message or a prowl it will go out simultaneously to all good puma sites and we can have big numbers. Also we can interact with them. Some don’t have the resources we do in organizing this huge matrix. Right now I’m organizing and gathering an LGBT list. I think this is improtant because right now there is tremendous anger at Obama over Rick Warren and I think people will see things our way now.
Please (and this means YOU Jenni, if you can) I also head the “traitors” committee. That committee singles out celebrities and politicos that have sold us out for a piece of silver or just plain stupidity. Melissa Etheridge was one, and I think she’ll think twice before rolling under Obama’s bus again.
My biggest target is Nancy Pelosi because she sold out Hillary and changed the convention rules to ensure his easy win. She’s on his INAUGURAL COMMITTEE but her website says nothing about Rick Warren although she has a HUGE LGBT constituency. She’s taking everyone for granted and turning her attention to her role as Obama’s wet nurse.
So let’s give her some hell. I want to track her personal financial situation, her legislation, deals with BO and sell-out of LGBT and women. Time to get started bouncing her out of office in 2010. That will be a HUGE puma victory. Any takers?
