QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.”
– Rebecca West

Read the last paragraph of this article by Petri Liukkonen first. Oh, and btw Joan Rivers is a Puma.

Rebecca West (1892-1983) – in full Dame Rebecca West, pseudonym of Cicily Isabel Andrews, original surname Fairfield*

Rebecca West was an English journalist, novelist, and critic, perhaps best-known for her reports on the Nuremberg trials (1945-46). Rebecca West started her career as a columnist for the suffragist weekly the *Freewoman* in the 1910s. Kenneth Tynan described her in 1954 as “the best journalist alive”. West’s companion for ten years was H.G.Wells. Their son Anthony also established himself as a noted author and critic.

“Good God enlighten us! Which of these two belongs to the sterner sex – the man who sits in Whitehall all his life on a comfortable salary, or the woman who has to keep her teeth bared lest she has her meatless bone of 17s. 4d. a week snatched away from her and who has to produce the next generation on her off-days?” (from ‘The Sterner Sex’, 1913)

Rebecca West was born Cicily (in some sources Cecily) Isabel Fairfield in London of Scottish-Irish parentage. Her father, Charles Fairfield, was a journalist. He left the family 1901 and West mother, Isabella Campbell Mackenzie moved with the childred to Edinburgh. West was educated at George Watson’s Ladies College, where she wrote with her friend some innocent poems, and caused a scandal. Later she said that “I have always felt the lack of a University education as a real handicap.” In 1910 West returned to London. She was  then trained as an actress at the Academy of Dramatic Art, from which she emerged to pursue a brief and unsuccessful acting career. From Henrik Ibsen’s play *Rosmersholm* West adopted the name of the passionate, self-willed heroine.

In 1911 West started to contribute to the left-wing press, and joined the staff of the feminist paper “Freewoman.” From the second article in the magazine, she started to use the name Rebecca West, because she thought that nobody would take seriously a person called Cicily Fairfield. She resigned after four months and became the leading writer on the socialist magazine “Clarion,” also writing for “The Star,” “Daily News” and “New Statesman.”

West’s subjects spanned social issues to book reviews, her writing showed brilliance of intellect and lucidity of style. Virginia Woolf said that, “Rebecca is a cross between a charwoman and gypsy, but as tenacious as a
terrier”. In 1913 West wrote about the suffragist Emily Davidson, who threw herself in front of the king’s horse at the Derby. The essay ‘The Sterner Sex’ (1913) records her thoughts at the wedding of her cousin, her sympathy for the women working for the Army Clothing Employees’ Union, and her anger: “I saw a world of women struggling as the American capitalist men of today struggle, to maintain a parasitic sex that is at once its tyrant and its delight…” West’s essay about Emmeline Pankhurst, ‘A Reed of Steel’ (1933) is among her best works on the period. Her first book was about the writer Henry James.

In the autumn of 1913, at the age of 19, West started her turbulent love affair with H.G. Wells, although she had called him in an article from 1912 “the old maid among novelists.” Wells called her “Panther,” and her pet name for him was “Jaguar”.

I find the above article to be very descriptive of challenges but also pointing a direction.

“The fear of political reprisals is very realistic. There are powerful interests opposed to feminism–let’s be clear about that. It is not in the interests of white supremacy that white women insist on abortion rights, that women of color insist on an end to involuntary sterilization, that, all women insist on reproductive self-determination. It is not in the interests of capitalism that women demand economic rights or comparable worth. It is not in the interests of many individual men or many institutions that women demand a nonexploitative sexual autonomy–the right to say and mean both no and yes on our own terms. What would our mass culture look like if it didn’t sell women’ s bodies–even aside from pornography. It is not in the interests of heterosexist patriarchy that women challenge our understandings of events headlined MAN KILLED FAMILY BECAUSE HE LOVED THEM, that women challenge the notion of men’s violence against women and children as deriving from “love” rather than power. It is not in the ‘interests of any of the systems of domination in which we are enmeshed that we see how these systems work–that we understand men’s violence, male domination, race and class supremacy, as systems of permission for both individual and institutional exercises of power, rather than merely as individual pathologies. It is not in the interests of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy that women ally across differences.”

“New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, tapped in December by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position, citing a pending investigation into a company that has done business with his state.

“Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” he said Sunday in a report by NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.” “

google news it is all over the past few minutes. here in la times.

Now, feds probe Gov. Richardson of Obama Cabinet for ‘pay-to-play’
It seems that Illinois’ legally challenged Gov. Rod Blagojevich is not the only close Barack Obama associate and Democratic governor being investigated by the feds for possibly selling government business in return for campaign contributions.

New Mexico’s Gov. Bill Richardson, who is the newly named Secretary of Commerce in Obama’s about-to-be Cabinet, is also being investigated by a federal grand jury in his home state for possibly steering state bond business from the New Mexico Financial Authority toward David Rubin, a significant campaign contributor, according to an NBC News report, among others.

NBC’s Lisa Myers reports that two former state officials say they’ve recently been questioned by a federal grand jury specifically about allegations that Richardson or aides pushed state business worth nearly $1.5 million in fees toward CDR Financial Products in 2004. The company is headquartered in Beverly Hills.

This was about the same time as CDR’s founder, Rubin, donated $100,000 to two of Richardson’s political action committees; mainly it appears to cover expenses of the governor and his staff at the Democratic Party’s National Convention in Boston that summer.

Rubin also donated another $29,000 to Richardson’s unsuccessful presidential campaign this year and last.

The probe is part of a broad national federal exploration of “pay-to-play,” in which government officials reap financial or other benefits in return for state business.

Richardson has ignored reporters’ questions on the federal investigation, while a spokesman says he’s confident the relationship was entirely appropriate and the governor expects state employees to cooperate fully with federal investigators. A CDR spokesman also said the transactions were appropriate.

An Obama transition official has refused to comment on whether the president-elect knew of the investigation before he appointed Richardson to his new Cabinet position.

Obama has called Richardson “my great friend” and said the governor would be a key member of his administration’s economic team. Richardson, the first Latino in Obama’s Cabinet, described himself the same way.

On Tuesday, the Obama transition team issued a five-page report of its own involvement with Blagojevich, who’s charged in a federal criminal complaint with demanding money for state aid, business and his appointment of Obama’s Senate replacement.

The Obama team report completely absolved the Obama team of any wrongdoing, as the Ticket reported here. But Obama was already on vacation when the report was issued and has said he won’t be talking further about the matter. The president-elect’s main Blagojevich contact, new White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel also happened to be unreachable on a vacation in Africa.

Here’s the full video report below.

mountainsong, here is your answer. The women’s movement has always been a bit on the outside of the culture….BUT…. the IDEAS from the feminists’ movement filter into the culture rapidly, even while those who espouse them remain suspected.

The Arab world is totally different. Women in politics is seen as more natural as their politics is heavily based on tribal identity and not political philosophies. So you would never have a woman elected to a legislative seat, but where there are seats especially set aside for women, as in Jordan, they have no problem having women in the government. They seem to think it’s natural for women to advocate for education and jobs for women, even if the reality of those ideals has a long way to go.

I remember hearing people say years ago “I believe a woman should get paid the same as a man for doing the same work BUT…” (insert favorite those-particular-women-are-icky phrase). BTW, how has that equal pay for equal work thing been working out for us lately?

Another one under the bus:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/01/04/report-richardson-drops-bid-commerce-secretary/

Bill Richardson Withdraws as Commerce Secretary-Designate
The commerce secretary-designate has withdrawn his nomination because of an investigation into whether Bill Richardson exchanged New Mexico state government contracts for campaign financing.

FOXNews.com

Sunday, January 04, 2009

Bill Richardson is withdrawing his nomination to be commerce secretary, FOX News confirmed Sunday.

Richardson, who is the governor of New Mexico, is facing a federal grand jury investigation into whether he exchanged government contracts for contributions to his failed presidential bid last year.

NBC News on Sunday reported that Richardson denies any wrongdoing but the investigation won’t be finished before he has to go to a Senate confirmation hearing.

“Let me say unequivocally that I and my administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” Richardson told NBC News. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.”

The Obama transition team also confirmed that Richardson has asked to have his name removed from contention.

“Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office,” Obama said in a statement to NBC.

The Associated Press reported last month that a grand jury is investigating whether the California firm CDR Financial Products paid to push through a contract with the state of New Mexico.

Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh told FOX News that with the cloud lingering over the Obama transition because of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s alleged attempts to sell Obama’s vacated Senate seat, the Richardson nomination would have been another unwanted distraction.

Richardson “was going to have a very difficult time getting through this nomination,” Marsh said. “People really haven’t looked at the Richardson situation and the more they looked at it, the more they realized” confirmation was going to be a problem.

Richardson is currently in his second term as governor. He served seven terms as a U.S. representative and was energy secretary and U.S. ambassador to the U.N. during the Clinton administration.

Nijma 01.04.09 at 2:06 pm But we are not living in an Arab world. Where are all the Arab women in politics during this current crisis and why haven’t they developed a peace plan?

“So you would never have a woman elected to a legislative seat, but where there are seats especially set aside for women, as in Jordan, they have no problem having women in the government. They seem to think it’s natural for women to advocate for education and jobs for women, even if the reality of those ideals has a long way to go.”

IMPO, the notion of “seats set aside especially for women” is unacceptable. And ‘advocacy’ is a slow, sometimes impotent, force for changes that haven’t come about since I began “advocating”.

“seats set aside especially for women” is unacceptable”
Why not. If you can’t get a whole loaf you wait for a crumb to drop from the table and take it. Soon you have half a loaf. That’s what politics is all about. But you don’t start out saying I want half of my rights. If you can’t get in the front door you go in the back door, and hope people forget how you got there once you are visible.

How do you think women got universal education for girls? Girls weren’t valued back in the days of the revolution. They couldn’t make an argument that girls were human and deserved to be educated. so they made the argument that girls would grow up to be mothers and would need to help educate their sons. Now no one remembers that, they just take it for granted that little girls go to school.

Don’t count Blagojevich out yet either. According to our court system a person is innocent until proven guilty. He says he is innocent. The tapes have not been released either, so we don’t’ know what he really said or in what context. All we know is he said the F-word a bunch of times. I’m ready to convict him on that, but what do I know.

I suspect he is not doing anything all other politicians don’t do, and someone is just mad at him for not being corrupt enough.

mountainsong, there are some definite class differences in how women think of their roles. What you are referring to is a classic working class attitude. Women getting their feeling of worth by “being taken care of” by a man. Fur coats, cars, the trappings of being loved. Middle class women are more likely to define success by what they do themselves and include work as being essential to sense of personal worth. So do you have to talk to women differently depending on class? I don’t know. I also don’t know what the generational differences might be–I’m sure attitudes change with time.

TO ALL WHO VISIT THIS SITE, DO NOT THINK THAT THE ERA PUMAPAC TEAM ONLY CONSISTS OF THE NAMES POSTED ON THEIR TEAM SITE; YOU ARE ALL MEMBERS OF THE NEW ERA MOVEMENT… PLEASE VISIT
THE (ERA Now! Public Forum) AND CONTRIBUTE. THANK YOU!

Listed here are some of the proposals we will be working on to advance this Just Cause.

We will demand from this government the ratification the ERA Now!!!

We will work hand in hand with other women organizations who desire the same end goal, the ERA ratified.

We will encourage the silent majority of women to come out and roar with us.

We will inform women, who do not even know what the ERA means; via email, flyers, rallies, on campuses talks and we will make them aware of the necessity and importance of the ratification of the ERA, for themselves and their future progeny.

We will not waste our time criticizing women who are against the ERA ratification because we understand that they are misinformed and still under the patriarchal influence. But mostly it is a waste of our creative energy.

And most important we will understand that Sexism is derived from the lack of laws protecting women in her own country!

We will emphasize that this Government of the most powerful nation on earth, has not as yet established into law, that all of their citizens shall have equal rights under The Constitution.

We will emphasize that this (Government) which demands justice and democratic rights for citizens of other countries, yet their own female citizens are without democratic rights under the Constitution

We will emphasize that this (Government) has no qualms about sending off to war our sons and daughter to defend the democratic rights of such a country as Iraq, and will not even defend the democratic rights, of their own women under The Constitution.

We need to inform 10 women who will inform 10 women etc. etc.

Sex (in the sexual act) is meant to be blessing, it is an act of wondrous expression between two lovers!

Sexism by definition is a “Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the opposite sex

Sexism is taking the object of your affection or desires and abusing them because you feel inadequate and lack control over your desires (them)

“Isn’t ’sex’ at the top of Maslow’s pyramid of needs?”

Va. Governor Kaine to Become DNC Chairman

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine will become chairman of the Democratic National Committee later this month, serving as the top political messenger for Barack Obama’s administration even while he finishes his final year in the governor’s mansion, several sources said.

Kaine, who emerged as one of Obama’s vice presidential finalists this summer, will operate from Richmond in a part-time capacity until January 2010, when he will become the full-time DNC chairman. Kaine is constitutionally barred from running for reelection.

A personal friend of the president-elect, Kaine is a gregarious chief executive who is known to relish political combat and helped put Virginia in the Democratic column for the first time in almost 50 years.

Obama transition aides declined to comment today, and Kaine aides did not return calls seeking comment. Two sources said Obama will announce his choice of Kaine for the post later this week.

I like to log in here to provide updated information. Several weeks ago there was a push that if Obama were not elected that we would do all we could to 1) make sure H. Dean would not be retained. 2) find a DNC chairperson who was supportive of women and would not actively work in primaries to endorse or support a candidate and bend the rules to support that candidate.

Well being that the one is having his upcoming anointment and coronation, then he gets to choose who is DNC chairperson. I just found out that “the one” has nominated current VA governor Tim Kaine to be DNC chairman part-time this year and full time next year. He is part time this year because he is finishing out a term and VA will hold gubernatorial elections this year. I don’t know if ultimately Tim will resign from his position giving someone a leg up into the governor’s mansion but Im wondering how this will directly impact Terry McAuliffe and his run for the nomination to be the DEM candidate on the ballot for Governor in November.

Anyway, if you would like to read more about it please go to

mountainsong’s “cage”: channeling Eleanor Roosevelt:

“No one can make you feel (fill in the blank) without your consent.”

What’s that scene where some Star Trek character (was it the yummy Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones?) has to cross an abyss and can’t see the bridge? He closes his eyes and the bridge is there–he can feel it with his feet. And he crosses. We are going to boldly go where no one has gone before, and we will feel where the path is as we are crossing it.

Close your eyes and feel for the bars–they aren’t there. It’s an Obot illusion.

Did I say “we”? I meant Mountainsong.

The single most important reason NOT to give Caroline a chance is that she made SURE Hillary Rodham Clinton would not have a chance at the presidency. I am dying to know … what ever happened to the BC (Natural Born Cit.) issue? I have watched the news, but I have not heard any reports on it? I assume that BO will be sworn in and nothing has changed … Am I correct?

This damn ’stimulus plan’ they are talking about is going to destroy whatever is left of this country.
We are going to get our chance to “start over” but it’s not going to be pretty.
BO and the rest of the politician ar telling us that if we just keep giving them money we don’t even have, they can fix what’s wrong with our economy.
How insane!!
I better go do something…the idea of MO in the White House makes me almost foam at the mouth over the travesty.

SouthernGAL: There is LOTS of news relating to the Natural Born Citizen issue, including a Supreme Court case to be heard on the 9th and 16th of January in conference at the Supreme Court.

New lawsuits were also filed. http://www.americasright.com/ has all the up to date information.

Also, there is speculation going on b/c so far only 24 states have handed in their electoral votes for the counting on Jan 8th. There is space for hope, but not too much yet.

If the Electoral College certifies the vote, one member of the Senate and one member of the House objecting is ALL it would take to start an investigation as well.

There have been several articles in the GLOBE magazine about Obama’s “real birth place”.

I haven’t read that article, but BO has plenty of scandals that were underreported by the MSM. I found this article from the TimesOnline dated 2/26/08 – “Mansion ‘mistake’ piles the pressure on Barack Obama”

Summary of article -

Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi lent $3.5 million on 5/23/05 to Antoin Tony Rezko through Auchi’s company Fintrade Services SA.

On 6/15/05, the Obamas buy a house on the South Side while Mrs. Rezko buys the lot next door.

How can Mrs. Rezko afford a downpayment of $125,000 and a $500,000 mortgage for a $625,000 lot? In court papers, she earned a salary of $37,000 and had $35,000 in assets.

In addition, Rezko had no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets, and is behind in many of his financial obligations.

Every one that has followed this mansion story knows that the Rezkos bought this lot so that the Obamas could purchase their mansion. On NBC news video, Lisa Myers interviewed the real estate agent of record and she states that both the lot and the home had to be sold together. Subsequently, the homeowner has denied that fact but not on camera.

This is just one of many scandals surrounding BO and his cabinet. I agree with TurndownObama, if for some reason HC cannot accept the SOS, CK will not get the Senate seat.

Footnote: Watergate History – President Nixon won in 1972 in a landslide. In his first two years in office before his resignation, he made a historical visit to China. In the 1970s, this story was significant because both China and Russia were dominant Communist countries. Also, the Vietnam War was coming to an end. Despite Nixon’s foreign policy strengths, the Watergate clock was ticking down.

NAME EQUALITY IN CALIFORNIA

Did you all note this below? If so, apologies for repeat.
From: TENNESSEE GUERILLA WOMEN – fighting to end sexism in Tennessee and the Nation:

http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-california-law-gives-men-right-to.html

TENNESSEE GUERILLA WOMEN
Sunday, January 04, 2009
New California Law Gives Men Right to Take Wife’s Name

With the adoption of the Name Equality Act — giving men the right to take a wife’s or partner’s name at marriage — California becomes the first state to heed the words of feminist trailblazer Lucy Stone:

“A wife should no more take her husband’s name than he should her’s.”

Ever since Lucy Stone kept her birth name after her marriage to Henry Blackwell back in 1855, the women who followed her controversial example have been termed Lucy Stoners. (I’m a Lucy Stoner!) One hundred and fifty years later, the law (in California) begins to catch up to the thinking of 19th century feminists:

Any man who registers for marriage or domestic partnership in California will now enjoy the option of adopting his wife or partner’s last name. The Name Equality Act of 2007, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in October 2007 was made effective Thursday. It eliminates any discrepancy in civil rights enjoyed by men and women with respect to the use of a marriage license or domestic partnership certificate to legally change the last name of one, or now both, parties. .

Couples will now have access to a gender-neutral marriage license or domestic partnership certificate, one that provides space for both parties to declare any changes to last names “upon solemnization” of the union. The options include taking the current last name of the other spouse or partner, taking the last name of the other given at birth, combining portions of both last names to form just one, or using a hyphenated combination of both.

The new law is called the Name Equality Act. And not only may a man take a woman’s last name, but the couple getting married may combine each others last name. For instance, John Smith and Jane Doe could be Mr. and Mrs. Smoe.

HA HA on Judas Richardson (karma she is my GODDESS)….happy new year to all!
********************

Jenniforhillary,I have a theory that Obama during the primaries promised Edwards and Richardson a great deal of power if they supported him instead of Hillary; knowing full well once they came on board Obama’s Gestapo team lead by Axelrod ,would slowly leak out into the MSM the hidden secrets in both of their pathetic lives.

And now both Edwards and Richardson know they have been had.
That was good news indeed about Judas.

And the goddess of karma delivers well earned good karma and well deserved bad karma.

Everything in life revolves around the Golden Rule!

Short hello to PUMAs and a tidbit from Drudge if you haven’t already reported it:

Judas backs out…………he must be real worried about his actions to do this:

WASHINGTON (AP) – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Sunday announced that he was withdrawing his nomination to be President-elect Barack Obama’s commerce secretary amid a grand jury investigation into how some of his political donors won a lucrative state contract.

Richardson’s withdrawal was the first disruption of Obama’s Cabinet process and the second “pay-to-play” investigation that has touched Obama’s transition to the presidency. The president-elect has remained above the fray in both the case of arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the New Mexico case.

A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson’s political activities won a New Mexico transportation contract worth more than $1 million. Richardson said in a statement issued by the Obama transition office that the investigation could take weeks or months but expressed confidence it will show he and his administration acted properly.

“I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process,” Richardson said. “Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the president-elect and his administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done.”

Richardson said he will remain as governor and told Obama, “I am eager to serve in the future in any way he deems useful.”

The announcement came ahead of Obama’s Monday meetings with congressional leaders on a massive economic recovery bill he wants lawmakers to pass quickly.

Obama said he has accepted Richardson’s withdrawal, first reported by NBC News, “with deep regret.”

“Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office,” Obama said. “It is a measure of his willingness to put the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the Cabinet to avoid any delay in filling this important economic post at this critical time. Although we must move quickly to fill the void left by Governor Richardson’s decision, I look forward to his future service to our country and in my administration.”

A person familiar with the proceedings has told The Associated Press that the grand jury is looking into possible “pay-to-play” dealings between CDR Financial Products and someone in a position to push the contract through with the state of New Mexico.

Here’s one person’s explanation of teh email fiasco:
[Edited for personal attack.]

“It all started with one member deciding on one issue to “expand” the CC list. But it got picked up and spread across several lines of return “reply all” emails. There were about a dozen non-team members added to the basic list. I’ve been trying to coach people on how to clear the problem, but until every member has replaced the Cc: field on every outgoing email with the short-list, it’s still a problem.

If you are not a team member, but want to be, email goofsmom@. Same if you are getting mail you don’t want from the BC Team. But don’t expect instant results; it requires attention and some added competence I’m trying to pass on to all the team members. As noted in the Action Center, the ClipMate tool would be helpful in this (as in all surfing and commenting) since it permits indefinite retention of anything and everything copied; in this case, the correct address list to over-write the contents of Cc: on outgoing team mail.”

These women, and many more, are recognized for their service to the this country between 1775 and 1783 in the American Revolution. They are listed as Revolutionary Patriots in their own right.

These comments were posted at NQ by Mel about possible “pay for play” by BO & MO…

Comment by mel | 2009-01-04 19:58:45

Here are 3 quick pay-to-play situations Obama was involved in, now will they ever be investigated?

1-Michelle Obama obtaining higher incomes and Board seats based on Obama becoming a US Senator!

2-After a major Exelon leak in upstate Illinois, Obama given and takes on the task of writing up strong legislation to protect the people from Nuclear spills and the forthcomings from it including clean up. Unfortunately, after Obama meets with John Rowe, CEO and Chair of Exelon, all the people of Illinois got was another bagman for Obama’s campaigning finaincing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and David Axelrod, who’s biggest client at the time was Exelron!

3- Obama finally caves to voter pier pressure and goes off to see the Crown family over the loss of jobs at Maytag and comes out of the meetings with huge bagman for his campaign financing and links for his wife to get better jobs at the U of C hospital, and add to this Obama changing his vote he proclaimed he’d fight to the bitter end on FISA because the Crown family are major stock holders in several phone companies in the US!

Let’s not forget Obama’s appointment approvals for hospital boards as recommended by convicted criminal Rezko while Obama was a State Senator and Rezko being Obama’s largest bagman at the time!
