The Audacity of Democracy

in The Audacity of Democracy

Here are the director Brad May’s remarks about the trailer below:

It feels like a near-eternity since I first went to work on THE AUDACITY OF DEMOCRACY last July. After shooting for roughly seven weeks, I had just under one hundred hours of video tape to cut together. Even more daunting was the notion that I could fashion that footage into any number of story lines, utilizing any number of narrative framing devices. What I chose to do, in the end, was tell the sort of American story I used to love as a kid – the kind of story where one or two or three people set out to accomplish something they feel needs accomplishing, all worries about success or failure be damned.

That is what I decided to do with the film and that is, for good or ill, what I have done.

As I’ve been saying, the finished film will be ready by roughly the second week of January, 2009. I’ve sent Murphy a copy of my first official trailer for the film. If anyone’s name is misspelled, please let me know and I’ll post a revised version of the trailer this weekend on YouTube.

The trailer does not, of course, try to tell the whole story the film itself takes on, nor does it really try to capture the overall tone. What it attempts to do is get your attention, draw you in a bit. Give you a taste. It’s my hope that the finished film will be useful as a fund-raising tool for worthwhile efforts. For the record, I’ve had less than half the projected budget to work with, and the film has even set me back a bit. Still, I’m glad I did it and I’m grateful to Darragh Murphy, Riverdaughter, Marnie, Sherri and the rest of you for letting me into your lives during the production of our film. — Brad Mays.

Hello PUMAs. I just found two bizarre articles within minutes of one another that just enraged me. One basically insinuates in the title that sarah Palin is somehow responsible for the drug use of the mother of her daughter’s fiancee, that’s right, THE MOTHER of her daughter’s fiancee. The other article talks about how the Illinois governor’s scandal and sort of dances around the issue that Tony Rezko was deeply involved with the Governor’s campaign and major illegal actions that took place in that campaign and term in office but simply mentions that he was a bankroller for Obama. It is appalling to me that even now, Sarah Palin is getting the book thrown at her by the media over something as ridiculous as drug use of the Mother of her daughter’s fiancee (which the story also points out that this would be the grandmother of Palin’s daughter’s baby) but in another story printed at about the same time we can only read one comment intersperced into a sentence about Rezko’s simultaneous associations with Obama and Blogoyavich!

Read the stories at the links below. Im out. Have a nice holiday.

Well, thanks a lot murphy, making me sob thinking about what could of, would have, should have, and fucking will be.

I cannot and will not ever truly recover from the past year. I feel old, I feel sad, and I feel small. Puma is my connection to life, and it is relegated to my fingers, my eyes, and my heart.

America has shown me that there is no amount of dumb that will make misogyny appear real, that Hitler’s big lie did and will work work, and that women have so far to come that we are in the pre-born stage as far as equal rights.

I still refuse to believe that that man, who is not even an American, will be allowed to step foot in our house as our leader. And even if the idiots go on with the ridiculous event, he will only be a thug. just a thug. and the democrats will have forever earned WORST ever honors as far as political parties. GW Bush will become the ‘good old days’ and freedom will take on a more frantic nature.

I am proud to be a Puma, glad to be a woman, and sorry to be an American at this point. I think if this sham takes place, I will just be a puma girl in exile, looking for the country my great grandparents fled Hitler for–the country that would take THAT ONE and fling him back to the depths of hell he escaped from. the country that honors her heroes, and respects her women. I will keep looking for that country until I cannot look anymore. And I will keep fighting this evil until I cannot fight anymore. this is my new pledge of allegiance.

mmmm…I don’t like BJ being cut in like that. Her emotion is way too strong for a trailer and deserves more respect, time and dignity.
It should not be presented as “bytes” as it is here.

I have been waiting with a great deal of anticipation for Brad’s movie since he started working on it….back when Riverdaughter, Garychapehill, Mawm, Heidi Li, and Darragh were all still talking about going to Denver…So much has taken place since then, but my anger over what has happened has not abated ONE BIT. I am more firmly a PUMA now then I was then. Brad—you and Lori are true heroes.

Thanks for the good wishes. My mom just got shook up, when she felt herself falling she sort of threw herself into a snowbank. The ambulance guys got her out and warmed up fast. The hospital is keeping her for observation overnight because of her heart problems. She is not a happy lady at this moment.
While I was at the hospital I ran into a friend and asked what this 4/15 scale meant because all I knew was that it did not sound good. It’s not, so all of us need to keep Louisa in our hearts and prayers. 3 is as low as the scale goes, and a person with a 3 rating is dead. If Louisa is rallying back from this level and still fighting I’m sure she can feel our prayers and most importantly, her mom.

dwp, when you say “desert,” do you mean like the real desert? are you painting?
———————–
The real desert. It looks like Mars, the planet. No offense to desert fans… the beauty of teh desert is subtle… but that subtlety is lost on me, as are most subtleties.
If I were to paint the deserts… I’d use a roller and tan paint, and cover the entire canvas.

Funny thing on my way home. There was snow at the higher elevations… people parked on teh side of teh highway so their children could make experience “snow” and make snowballs. On my way home there was an suv with two large-ish chucks of snow on the roof… 12 inches in diameter when I saw them. Wonder if those snow chuncks made it home for “snow and tell”.
And, there was a pickup truck just ahead of me with a 4 or 5 ft standing snowman … with waterfalls streaming out of every open crevice of the truck bed. The truck bed muct have been flooded with the melting.
Southern Californians and their snow… too much!

Looking forward to Brad Mays documentary, Murphy. I wish we can put Denver, Obama etc behind us and move forward but they are what’s in front of us.

Truth be told, I am sadder to see Sarah Palin being treated in such a nasty way than Hillary. No doubt Hillary did not get it easy but she is seasoned and can let it roll off her back. Sarah Palin seemed so vulnerable in light of everything nasty that was hurled at her.

Freddie, the sunrise highway warnings was one of the reasons I stayed out there for only a couple of hours,
that and the outside air was winter chilly in anza-borrego.

NYC councilman charged with assaulting girlfriend

Well, what’d ya know. At least she has a good platform:
…throwing her hat into the ring for the US Senate seat being vacated by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton.

“I feel like I could be a good senator – I’m every woman and the consummate New Yorker,” said Drescher from Miami, where she’s been partying it up with pals Rosie O’Donnell and Gloria Estefan.

“What you see is what you get.”

The divorced Queens native has some stiff competition – namely Caroline Kennedy and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. It’s up to New York Governor David Paterson to appoint the successor.

“I realise I don’t have a very good relationship with the governor and other contenders have his ear,” she says.

“But all he can do is say no.”

It’s actually not such a stretch to think of Drescher as a politician. She’s got a clean record, for one. “I won’t get arrested” she says, referencing Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, busted for trying to sell Barack Obama’s seat.

“I’m glad he got caught. We need to hold people in office accountable.”

Since Drescher’s diagnosis with uterine cancer almost nine years ago, she has also become an avid women’s health advocate. In September, she was appointed public diplomacy envoy for the State Department.

With that signature New York accent and lawnmower-like laugh, Drescher can even make cancer sound funny.

“It took two years and eight doctors for them to find out what I had,” she says.

“I got in more stirrups than Roy Rogers.”

Luck was on her side; the tumour was slow growing and after a hysterectomy and radiation, she is now “cured”.

Drescher thinks women too often neglect their own health to focus on the family.

“We have to recondition our thinking and to stop submitting to the old Victorian way – to grin and bear it,” she says.

“Caregivers are useless if they’re six feet under.”

I know many of you don’t like World Net Daily, but check this out…
The Kenyan government has barred unapproved contacts between the media and President-elect Barack Obama’s extended family.

Family members will be required to receive permission from the government before making any public statements about their famous relative, according to the Nairobi Star.

“We are doing this because we want to ensure better flow of information,” Athman Said, an under-secretary in the Ministry of Heritage, told the Obama family in Kogelo.

“The government has decided that you should inform its officers who will be based here if you want to address the media.”

Journalists wishing to speak with the family must first be approved by the government.

KarenWI 12.20.08 at 9:51 pm I just went to read your link and this jumped out at me. I seem to have some weird luck with weather. Right after I finished my cabin, we got a 100-yr rain, with a 500-yr flood. In Michigan, we had several big tornadoes when I was there. Then, in Florida, went thru 7 hurricanes in 2 years. Now this: lol

“The National Weather Service said that conditions in Northwest Washington state are “extremely dangerous” and warned they could become “life-threatening.”

121

turndownobama 12.20.08 at 10:18 pm

I’m still thinking about ‘personal’ vs ‘political.’

Say you’re getting sexual discrimination or harrassment on the job. One way to react is to start your own damn business and be your own damn boss. Then you can hire other women and treat them right and encourage them in some political action and invest in other women’s businesses etc. Enough women doing enough of that will eventually build up a power/money base that can get some political results.

So is that personal or political or both?

Just catching up. Powdered sugar and protests? No I don’t think they go together like a crowded bar & a protest, lol!! But we could gather PUMA’s together to march along that area where all the foot traffic is, or down where all the boats go by.

Then go to Cafe DuMonde for post-protest dessert! ;D

NewOrleans, my highschool sweetheart had a big house & a dark room in the very back. Some of my first real kisses & cuddling took place in that darkroom! He’d say “Mom! I’ve got to go develop some pictures for a while!” and off we’d go, lol…

I almost started bawling when we took the kid to see Santa and get his picture taken with him. We were in line, and I started getting choked up. I was like, “Self! WTF???” I did not have many thoughts in my head, except for thinking about getting my hair done as we had just passed my hair stylists salon… it just came on out of no where. I think maybe there were thoughts about those kids out there who are not going to have a sit down with Santa this year, or any year. All the hurting families out there. That is basically the predominant thought coursing through my mind these days. Over 500,000 jobs lost in November. The Fraud is not going to help those people, even though so many think he is the Second Coming. it is only going to get worse for them, and many more to come…

There was also some question about the shoe thrower’s bruises… they didn’t know if security beat him up for throwing the shoe at george b. or if they beat him up because he missed the target.

So much for being greeted with flowers…
The incident serves to inform americans that all is not as they would have us believe. I wonder how many other like kind incidents have occurred that we havent been told about? At least the shoe pitcher gave some another clue.

Then, another person, a Hillary supporter, gave me a souvenier (sp?) of something I can put on my car window with Obama’s picture on it and it says YES WE DID. They all know I don’t like Obama.

========================
I read the article that you linked to, sunshinelvr – about how this guy was a former cop who helped to fight domestic assaults! Remind’s me of a case two years ago here on the street where I live – a fire captain murdered his girlfriend.

“A 23-year department veteran, Del Toro had been the supervisor of Fire Station 1 in Lincoln Heights and had trained firefighters in stress management and prevention of sexual harassment, despite a history of domestic violence allegations against him. The case highlighted the Fire Department’s failure to track domestic abuse within its ranks.
. . . (then comes a gruesome description of the murder) . . .
Homicide investigators followed a trail of blood from the body to Del Toro’s home, sources said.”

I read something about Joan Baez a long time ago, about her childhood in Iraq. This is what the wikipedia has to say about it.

“Joan, at the time only ten years old, was deeply influenced by the poverty and inhumane treatment suffered by the local population in Baghdad. While there, she saw animals and people beaten to death, and legless children dragging themselves down filthy streets begging for money. She later wrote that she felt a certain affinity with the beggars in the streets, and that Baghdad and the suffering of its people became a “part” of her.”

I remember you complaining in the chat section of the blog radio screen when I was on with Sheri and Darragh about two months or so ago. I never said that the purpose of my film was to be an attack piece to keep Obama from entering the White House. My film has ALWAYS been about telling the story of the PUMA movement. THE AUDACITY OF DEMOCRACY has done nothing for my career, really. My main project for this year just premiered in San Diego and will soon be touring the country. When all is said and done, I hope that the film helps PUMA in measurable ways. I’ve put many hundreds of hours into this project and have had to absorb the cost of paying crew members. In a few weeks, PUMA will have a full length feature film with which to answer media attacks. Perhaps in the fullness of time, you may come to regard this as a good thing.

I’ll promise you this. Get your address to me and I’ll circumvent some small portion of your donations to PUMA by sending you a free DVD.

And – really and sincerely – thank-you for at least talking about the film on this thread.

There is some good stuff on this page:

Why Barack Obama should be indicted
http://citizenwells.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/obama-next-obama-to-be-indicted-patrick-fitzgerald-december-15-2008-rezko-kickback-rezko-real-estate-deal-pay-for-play-kenneth-j-conner-fired-by-bank-fbi-land-appraisals-jerome-corsi-art/

Q – Do you think Rezko’s sentencing keeps getting delayed so that they can keep getting more info on him re-Oblabla & his court of corrupt fools..?

Brad, Thank You, from me, for putting this film together. I have been waiting patiently!

178

hillstheone 12.20.08 at 11:53 pm

murphy,
You wouldn’t believe it but one of my oldest friends who lives down in So Cal sends out an xmas letter each year. One year written by her cat, one year written by her dog, etc. Usually humorous & funny. This year’s letter said “Barack Obama helped me write this letter,” she thought he was great, I couldn’t get past the first sentence. Ugh.

But what do you do? I thought it was fine if she wanted to write a letter like that, but highly insensitive to send it to me.

I can’t stand Caroline Kennedy! I’m so sick of these privileged people that can just walk into anything they decide they want to do on Monday morning while the rest of us cringe at what is facing us in the coming week. This country has no semblance of what our forefathers envisioned, it is a mockery of everything they stood for. A land where only those who have the money to buy power can rule. This is no longer a government of the people for the people, it is a government of the money for the money for a few people.

180

murphy 12.20.08 at 11:57 pm

it’s sad how people REALLY want to believe.

so empty and shallow.

181

hillstheone 12.20.08 at 11:59 pm

“This is no longer a government of the people for the people,” right on, antifish!

Another thing, anti. Honestly I STILL cannot get over Obama inviting Warrens to the inauguration. It’s so sickening. But check out the above link, maybe Obama will pay his dues yet.

Dances, one question: How did you like the pie?

obama used mavis staples’ song as a theme for so many of his rallies… but didn’t invite her to participate or sing at his installation ceremony.

184

freddiebrown 12.21.08 at 12:03 am

If anyone knowing how much I hate Obama, sends me anything pro Obama as a gift, that would be the last they hear from me and that is no joke. I guess I have a low tolerance of disrespect from “friends”.

185

antifish 12.21.08 at 12:06 am

(((Hills)))

Hey, Obama choosing Warren as his pastor in chief has already cost him millions of bot defections. We can only hope that he will continue to act like the idiot that we all know he truly is. Bush was and is a total idiot, but, I’m convinced that Obama, sans teleprompter is not much better.

186

murphy 12.21.08 at 12:07 am

me too freddie, same here.

what pie?

can i have a piece?

Ok, nuff sappy movies. It’s more entertaining reading about what someone told Caroline Kennedy what she thinks about political issues.I wonder what it’s like to be so famous you don’t even have to think for yourself. No, I don’t.

I bake. Bread, cookies, cake. But most of all, I bake sugar-free pies. I baked an apple pie at hippie house in Denver, along with a last-night dinner for Lori, Dances and Steve. The menu consisted of Chicken parmesian with stuffed mushrooms, and fresh apple pie. Most of the pie was left for Dances to take with her on her long road trip back to CA. Guess the family who rented the house would up with it.

Along with all that wine.

Murphy,
Brad is an amazing chef… What a spread he created for The Hippie House’s Last Supper!

The chicken parmagiana (hey, paisan’), stuffed mushrooms to die for… an amazing apple pie for dessert.
Fantastico!!

geez, now I’m hungry all over again.

In point of fact, a great deal of the film was released before the election. We released two several minute trailers, and in Denver, we showed the press a 40 minute cut that detailed the PUMA complaint with Obama. Both CNN and Fox used footage from our film – Fox more than once. The film’s subject was written up repeatedly in newspapers across the nation. Before the election in November, we again sent footage out to the media at their request for use in their coverage of Obama.

We cannot control what the media does with our footage. We also didn’t have a way to get it to people on our own. We could have rented a theatre in Manhattan or LA, mounted a PR campaign and hoped to get some coverage – but nothing is guaranteed, and doing so would have cost $25k or more per week. Money PUMA did not have. Most documentaries get very little press. Michael Moore and Robert Greenwald are the exceptions. And both of them take a lot longer to make a documentary than the time frame that you propose we work within.

In the end, our documentary will hopefully tell the story of the PUMA movement, and now that he is president, help shape the narrative that surrounds his election. PUMA is to Obama as Ohio and Florida are to Bush. He’ll never escape the tar of misogyny because of us.

I have no idea how you think making this documentary, in Hollywood, would help anyone’s career – I really don’t. Just think about it.

lori;
Please. He has just finally reached the official status of President Elect now that the Electoral College has met. And there’s more to go before Jan.20.

You read that whole post and all you get out of it is that I leave out the word “elect”? for real?

Geez.

As KarenWI commented regarding Obama’s involvement in Kenyan politics and now his Kenyan relatives are forbidden to talk to the media, this information must be forwarded to the public forum. Mr. Corsi was arrested in Kenya when he went to Kenya to publisize his book the “ObamaNation”. I don’t understand why Mr. Corsi has not shouted this from the rooftops in the United States. I hope that PUMA supporters will spread the information to the public before the inauguration in January.
