What Twisty Said

by murphy on December 2, 2008

in Swamp Misogyny, Women Who Smoke, that's racist!

[source]

“A black dude can get elected president, but a woman? When swine defy gravity. Racism flourishes, all righty, but it’s covert, on the DL, the embarrassing private luxury of elderly honkys and parochial-minded nincompoops . . . Misogyny, on the other hand, is bullet-proof. It’s not merely tolerated, it’s openly celebrated in the American street, the American courtroom, the American bedroom, the American internet. Except for a puny consortium of bruised and contused blamers calling blindly to the Vaginatariat through mists of dime store cologne, even the victims of this oppression embrace it.”

–- Twisty Faster, head writer and Blamer in Charge at “I Blame The Patriarchy”

Doesn’t that dime store cologne smell delicious though, Pumas? Here, grab an icepack for your bruises and contuses.

(thanks to Kat in Your Kat for posting the quote and to Twisty, well just for being Twisty.)

I am glad Saddam Hussein and his serial rapist sons are dead like dogs in a ditch too.

There is a lake in Iraq in which the Husseins drowned the women they raped. The lake is so full of cages enclosing these women’s corpses, the US Military had to stop trying to retrieve all of the bodies, the job was too massive, and now this lake is a place of quiet, a mass grave. No one is allowed to go to this lake anymore. Those poor young women!!! The Hussein’s raped them, and/or forced them to submit by kidnapping their mothers and threatening them with harm so that the women would submit to the sexual torture. When they were done with the women they put them in cages and lowered them into the lake. Alive.

Saddam, Udai, and Qusai Hussein are dead pigs now, rotting in hell. AND I AM GLAD WE KILLED THEM!!!”

Do *not* look for images. I learned about it on TLC. No, it was just a man who had his twin inside of him since in utero and it continued to grow and so he carried a deceased person inside of him for a few decades.

15

kat in your hat 12.02.08 at 6:28 pm

Now, as far as Twisty’s quote, this is where it seems hard to get through to people.

See, I had a talk with a friend of mine. I said flat out that America is a sexist and misogynistic country.

The comeback? Welll, it’s not as bad as other places, and I’ve always felt equal.

I’m like, but you aren’t equal…I throw out a few stats.

Then she said she didn’t believe the stats on domestic violence. She said: Oh that’s really just in the movies.

wtf?

So, I don’t know what’s going on, except *somehow* women think they are experiencing the world equally to men.

Not sure what happened. Maybe when we were little girls, and our mothers said we were equal than men as a gender, they should have said something else. Know what I mean?

Many months ago I was talking to a woman who seemed really smart and interesting, and I liked her. Then it turned to politics, and she said, “Aww, you know, that job is more for a man.” Then she said something about women reacting to situations with their emotions as a main reason to only accept a man as president.

I was totally stunned. I know women are deeply connected to their emotions, but we are very careful decision makers and far less impulsive than men (imho). Besides, women are excellent communicators (in general), and so…there wouldn’t be a response to a problem or issue that wouldn’t be carefully worked out.

Anyway, it’s disappointing to hear a woman (in real life) actually say that.

As a former domestic violence volunteer worker I know women are immersed in psychological abuse and manipulation. We are all pretty much victims to some extent. The statistics are overwhelming. As an educator, I want women to learn how to ignore social and psychological pressures that start from early childhood. We are climbing an enormous mountain here. That’s why getting a woman President is paramount!

37

DeadGirl 12.02.08 at 7:09 pm

Murphy, don’t worry about breaking furniture over the “religion of peace” I have friends who have spent years at Harvard studying the language and cultures of the Near East (i.e. arabic and Islam) with open minds and an academics heart, and they tell me they still cannot comprehend it…….. one of them was speechless when trying to answer a question of mind, due to the failure to comprehend why they think and act the way they do.

38

Nijma 12.02.08 at 7:14 pm

Dead Girl do you have source for your story? The stories about Uday having women kidnapped off the streets and killed later was circulating in the Middle east when I was there, also torturing losing athletes, but nothing about the other two.

Admin, you did good over there and I think the furniture is still okay–they did need something to think about instead of just repeating platitudes and wishful thinking. Someone has to speak up when the emperor has no clothes.

39

kat in your hat 12.02.08 at 7:17 pm

I want all girls to learn self-defense at a young age. I want self defense courses to be a part of gym curriculum at all girls schools (to start), and I want self-defense classes to be a part of women’s studies course requirement.

I really don’t understand this stupid mentality that little girls must stay all sweet and…quiet….and be pretty…and giving…

How exactly does that help them in life? Be a self-sacrificial victim? Sounds like the perfect setup to get used by guys, employers, co-workers, husband, etc.

Congratulations Murphy and PUMAs for reaching the fundraising goal!

About the previous post and Bush, I’m not a fan of Bush. However, I believe in honest press coverage (which is sorely lacking these days), and the press did not give Bush a fair shake. They deliberately reported negative information about him. On the other hand, I do not understand why Bush did not speak out more or fight back on this to dispel this perception the media has portrayed of him. Maybe if he did, we might have McCain/Palin as President-elect and not Bambi!

So, I hope everyone starts to tell little girls that they are smart just as often as they say she is pretty. Or remember to tell her she’s also pretty when she’s digging for worms, playing in play clothes and her hair is all messed up.

And stop breaking your neck telling the little girl to share everything. Sometimes it’s ok to not share.

Funny you mention that. For the past numerous weeks I have been (happily) noticing similar on other network prime time shows such as CSI, NCIS, etc. I hesitate making any mention here, but you just verified what I am seeing as well. Sometimes the references are subtle, others discuss outright topics as part of the story such as sexism. The are those who are attempting to send messages to the viewers. I pray and hope these good, although subtle messages, goes mainstream into people’s minds soon! Very soon!

normapapuma,
(sorry, just got back)

Yes, sports is definitely great for girls. Healthy competition…losing and winning…and working as a team, and also good exercise. Plus, I like outdoorsy roughin’ it for girls as well.

I was very lucky growing up. I got dolls but also tool kits, and baseball gloves along with barbies, etc. I loved climbing rocks and trees and building forts, etc. I don’t think I *ever* felt like I had to act a certain way because I was a girl–except sometimes at school, and visiting with certain grandparents.

58

carol 12.02.08 at 7:59 pm

I would not get your hopes up about the BO BC thing. I was discussing it with my husband who is a lawyer and former litigator. He says that because the law subsequently changed to allow someone like BO to be considered a citizen, the whole issue of retroactive application could be argued and is not clear. If the situation is not absolutely clear law, no one is going to throw the nation into turmoil……not saying I wouldn’t love to see it happen….I just think it is unrealistic.

I LOVE “Boston Legal” and am so sad it’s in its final season. The writers are always on the cutting edge of the news media (actually way ahead of the MSM). So if they included a comment about the BC, it’s because it will soon be in the news (no matter the outcome).

The Associated Press says Saxby Chambliss has won a second term in the U.S. Senate.

According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, Chambliss had 60.8 percent of the vote and Martin 39.2 percent with 68 percent of the state’s precincts counted.

The Associated Press called the election for Chambliss at 8:47 p.m. Polling precincts around Georgia reported light turnout and few problems as thousands of Georgia voters cast their ballots to decide the runoff between Chambliss, the Republican and Martin., the Democrat.

Hey Pumas – remember right before Nov 4 when the LA TInes would not realease the Khalidi Tape, and we all picketed their offices? I cancelled my subscription then and told them very clearly why. Well, last night I got a call from the LA TImes simply informing me that it was time to get me back on subscription. This guy went off on me when I said I had no intention of renewing my subscription, that I would prefer to read the National Enquirer. He asked me if I had voted for Obama, I said of course not. He then said well of course you would not like what we printed. He was a total jerk (an Obot obviously) and I hung up on him. And this guy was trying to get back my business, can you believe that?

kat #33, your friend is making the (very common) mistake of confusing her individual life with the common life. How does she answer the questions:

1. why are there no major hollywood directors who are women?
2. why are there so many fewer women professors of science than there are women with PhD’s in science? (there are Plenty of women with PhDs in science. How come so few of them get tenure?)
3. why do women earn so much less than men?
4. why are there so FEW women executives?
5. why are so many women poor compared to men?
6. why are there so few women in congress?

and on an on.

There are only two possible answers to these questions. Either women are inferior, or B) there is something holding women back.

Mary Puma: In my opinion, Nancy Pelosi torpedoed both Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, because she has delusions about being the first female president. I sent her my own personal e-mail, months ago, informing her in no uncertain terms what I thought she is all about and that she would never, ever have my support, should she foolishly put herself forward as a presidential candidate. I will never support a femicannibal, which is my own personal term for women who turn on and help destroy other women, for their own personal benefit.

gypsy rebel: My pet theory about women who turn on other women, is that their response is based on biology, to a certain degree, and based on fear. They ally themselves with those they perceive as “strong,” and turn on the ones perceived as “weak,” so that they can be thought of as strong, too, and thus survive. I’m not even sure if this is a conscious strategy, which is what makes it so insidious. Women like Pelosi are acting from a basic, savage instinct to survive, and even dominate, by turning on their own, whom they desperately do not want to be identified with.

OPEN LETTER TO MURPHY

One day in January 2009 when things have pretty much settled politically, I would like to suggest if I may Murphy, a direction that PumaPac may possible pursue.

PumaPac should hold A National Women’s Conference regarding the future positions of women in the 21st century in America. One of the primary objectives will be the endeavor to address once again the goal of Equal Rights for Women under the Constitution.

I envision you Murphy and the other great leaders, which you have come to know through your common goals, which was the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, having preliminary meetings and forming an association.
Your association naturally should first hold a leaders meeting, to set up criteria’s and objectives for this National Women’s Conference. Your new association can perhaps name your newly formed group “Women’s Equal Rights Association.

Women’s Equal Rights Association WERA will be a formal group of women demanding respect, protection and the pursuit of happiness under the Constitution. It shall engage the Constitutional language for the last time, regarding the rights of all women under the Constitution of America.

The last time, in the sense that “Women’s Equal Rights Association, will never be a dropped issue again and it will be pursued, until it has been enshrined in the Constitution.

It will be know as the Women’s Equal Rights Association era. The WERA era! WERA will have one primary goal and that is to get women’s equal rights written into the Constitution.

This is the one instance where working from the bottom up will not serve women well. We have to first get our Constitutional Rights written into law.

Once it is written into law, then we can be the watch (Pumas) for any misogynist acts propagated in film, theatre, newspapers, in the political domain and on the job etc. That is how misogyny is put to rest, we first need the law that decrees that it is unlawful to exhibit any form of misogyny and it will be prosecuted.

And in future efforts, we will work to support the goals of all women, in all positions of authority in the fields of: law, politics, finance, academia, medicine, and scientists etc….
We women of the world are after all, half of the earth’s population and if the halfs are out of balance, then the whole will end up in jeopardy and will eventually self destruct.

There are brilliant, intellectual and more visionary women out there working on this concept and my desire is to unite with them and fashion a far more peaceful, productive and sustainable world for all men and women…

I personally seek this for the future generation, because I personally would like to dedicate them, to this cause of equal right for all women across the world because I believe it is a worthy and just cause.

But as a truism states;
Let there be peace in the world and let it begin with me.
Let there be equal rights for all and let it begin with me.

Meaning, if America has peace, it is far easier for Americans to help other find their peace
And if all Americans have equal right then it is far easier for Americans to fight for equal rights for others around the world.
And thus I close with a thank you for your consideration regarding this pursuit of opening up the Women’s Equal Right Association agenda.
Equal Rights and Freedom begins at Home!

WND Exclusive OBAMA WATCH CENTRAL
Electoral College scam: Where dead people vote
Lawyer challenging eligibility seeks investigation of process
Posted: December 02, 2008

By Bob Unruh
© 2008 WorldNetDaily

A lawyer playing a major part in a California lawsuit urging officials to prevent the state’s 55 Electoral College votes from being recorded for Barack Obama until questions about his citizenship are resolved has written to county clerks around the state, seeking an investigation into a process that has allowed a dead woman to be listed as an official elector.

Barack Obama

According to Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation, the clerks have been advised about the “irregularity” in the list of electors provided by the Democratic Party in California.

“In the 28th Congressional District (Congressman Howard Berman), situated in Los Angeles County, Ilene Huber is listed as the presidential elector designated in that district. However, as shown in the attached certified statement of Dean C. Logan, registrar-recorder/county clerk of the county of Los Angeles, state of California, there is no Ilene Huber listed as a registered voter in the County of Los Angeles. A statewide search of public records has revealed only one Ilene Huber in the state of California, and she is deceased-a copy of her certificate of death is attached hereto as well,” the advisory said.

(Story continues below)

“Further, according to Chris Myers, director of research for the California Democratic Party, who submitted the list of presidential electors for the Democratic Party to the office of the California secretary of state, there are additional, undisclosed, ‘errors’ in the list of electors. This admission was made in a telephone conversation with a representative of the American Independent Party on or about November 20, 2008,” the letter continued.

“It is therefore respectfully suggested to you that an investigation be made by each of your respective offices into the accuracy and validity of the list of presidential electors submitted for the ballot in your respective counties. It is believed that an attempt will be made to ‘revise’ the list of such electors so that those named individuals that were selected by the voters will be replaced by other names. Such ‘revisions’ will, in all likelihood, result in litigation being filed to challenge such attempts to alter the ballot post election, and may result in your county being included as a defendant therein,” it said.

Kreep said the integrity of elections in the U.S. needs to be maintained, or “the vote of the people becomes merely something that can be ignored by those who hold the reins of political power at the moment.”

Kreep previously told WND that because of the lack of proof of Obama’s U.S. citizenship and the consequent questions over his ability to meet the Constitution’s requirement for only a “natural-born citizen” to be president, the Obama administration will be considered by some to be fraudulent.

“We will file lawsuits on his actions, every time. As long as we have money , we will keep filing lawsuits until we get a decision as to his citizenship status,” he previously told WND. “We’re already talking to groups who are willing to be plaintiffs.”

As WND reported, Kreep filed a legal challenge in California with presidential candidate Alan Keyes as a plaintiff questioning Obama’s birthplace.

The complaint urges the California secretary of state to refuse to allow the state’s 55 Electoral College votes to be cast until Obama’s eligibility to hold office is resolved.

The case is one of more than a dozen legal challenges brought over Obama’s citizenship. The cases all cite Obama’s clouded history and the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that a president be a natural-born citizen.

Sign an online petition to insist on release of birth certificate.

There have been allegations Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii as his campaign has reported, that he could be considered a British subject because of his father’s residency in what then was a British protectorate that later became Kenya, and that the “Certificate of Live Birth” posted on his website simply shows his mother registered his birth in Hawaii after he was born but does not document a location.

There also have been questions raised about his travels as a youth, including the years he spent registered as a Muslim in an Indonesian school, and his later travels to Pakistan at a time when U.S. passports weren’t welcome in that nation.

WND senior reporter Jerome Corsi traveled to Kenya and Hawaii prior to the election to investigate issues surrounding Obama’s birth. But his research and discoveries only raised more questions.

The biggest question is why Obama, if a Hawaii birth certificate exists, simply hasn’t ordered it made available to settle the rumors.

The governor’s office in Hawaii said there is a valid certificate but rejected requests for access and left ambiguous its origin. Obama’s half-sister, Maya Soetoro, has named two different Hawaii hospitals where Obama could have been born, while a video posted on YouTube features Obama’s Kenyan grandmother Sarah claiming to have witnessed Obama’s birth in Kenya.

The California action was filed on behalf of Keyes, as well as Wiley S. Drake and Markham Robinson, both California electors.

“Should Senator Obama be discovered, after he takes office, to be ineligible for the Office of President of the United States of America and, thereby, his election declared void, Petitioners, as well as other Americans, will suffer irreparable harm in that (a) usurper will be sitting as the President of the United States, and none of the treaties, laws, or executive orders signed by him will be valid or legal,” the action challenges.

U.S. State Department officials declined to respond to WND inquiries about the process for keeping a U.S. citizenship while attending schools in Indonesia, or the possibility of a U.S. citizen keeping that status while traveling on another nation’s passport.

But several online “fact” sites have contended that the concerns over Obama’s citizenship are much ado about nothing.

Factcheck.org, for example, has posted an image described as Obama’s “birth certificate.” But within the image can be seen the words “Certificate of Live Birth,” which is not the same document. In Hawaii at the time Obama was born the state issued a “Certificate of Live Birth” to a parent registering a birth, but it does not indicate the location of the birth.

“FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate,” the group said in a statement accompanying the image of the “Certificate of Live Birth.”

The website Snopes.com also attested to Obama’s U.S. citizenship, citing information from the campaign itself.

However, WND columnist Janet Porter, who has investigated the dispute, wrote in her column that there are too many questions to ignore.

“In Hawaii, a Certification of Live Birth is issued within a year of a child’s birth to those who register a birth abroad or one that takes place outside a hospital,” she said.

“There’s the matter that Obama traveled to Indonesia, Pakistan, Southern India and Kenya in 1981. He said he went to Indonesia to see his mother. This seemed plausible, except for the fact that his mother returned to Hawaii in August of 1980 to file for a divorce from her second husband, Lolo Soetoro. Unless she went back to pal around with the man she divorced, she wasn’t there at the time of Obama’s visit,” Porter wrote.

“There’s another problem. No record of Obama holding an American passport prior to the one he received once becoming a U.S. senator has been found. If he traveled to Pakistan with an American passport, he wouldn’t have been allowed in – since Pakistan was in turmoil in 1981 and under martial law. It was also on the State Department’s travel ban list for U.S. citizens,” she wrote.

“If he couldn’t get into Pakistan with a U.S. passport, perhaps he went there with an Indonesian passport. But the only way you can get one of those is if you are an Indonesian citizen,” she wrote.

124

mountainsong 12.02.08 at 10:57 pm

I think it all comes back to lack of self esteem. When I worked as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, that was an, understandably, common thread. People, male or female, express their insecurities quite often as jealousy or envy and criticism of others.
I think development of sense of self worth needs to begin in early childhood. But if parents lack self esteem, they can hardly develop it in their children.
I might get my head chewed off here for postulating this. But I do believe it is the underlying cause of women vs women issues. It seems like, in a competitive society, we constantly compare ourselves to others, and base our self worth on how we measure up, rather than on our own philosophies and/or accomplishments.

Dead Girl do you have source for your story? The stories about Uday having women kidnapped off the streets and killed later was circulating in the Middle east when I was there, also torturing losing athletes, but nothing about the other two.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Nijma, I did not see this until late.
I double checked with my source.
The source of the story is from the US Military. It is the manmade lake at Saddam Hussein’s Palace(one of the many) where Camp Liberty is. These women were tortured and raped by Saddam Hussein himself. They gave up retrieving the bodies after over 100, because they realized that they would never get to the end of it. Perhaps when the occupation is over the Iraqi people will finish the job.
Uday was a monster. I was glad to see the picture of him, dead, like a dog in a ditch. He tortured the national soccer team when they lost, and after they were beaten and bloodied, he dropped them into the sewer where they nearly drowned in the human waste. This infected the sores on their bodies. You can only imagine what their recovery was like.
I do not equate Saddam Hussein and his extended family with Islam. I have been following the work of Anthropologists working on the mass graves sites, trying to help the families of the victims identify their remains, and doing crime scene investigation. There is so much going on in Iraq that we are not much aware of. Good people are there trying to help the poor people of this ravaged country. They put their lives on the line to do so. This work will be going on for generations. The information will come out too.
As the US Military is behind a lot of this work, it is not the nature of this organization to disseminate it. But the information is there, nonetheless. Perhaps Al Jazeera should attend open press conference when the opportunity is presented and ask about these places, like this lake of the caged women. No one in Saddam’s heyday would dare speak of these things, for fear of retribution on their families.
Mountainsong: I think you and I are saying the same thing about the Pelosi’s of this world, just couched in different terms. And I agree with you about Christine Gregoire. I voted against her, but of course, Washington seems to swing the Democratic direction, regardless of the candidates’ characters.
An opening salvo in the 2nd Ammendment showdown?
Remember how Obama said that he wasn’t going to
take your guns? Well, it seems that his minions and allies in the
anti-gun world have no problem with taking your ammo!
The bill that is being pushed in 18 states
(including Illinois and Indiana) requires all ammunition to be encoded
by the manufacture a data base of all ammunition sales.
So they will know how much you buy and what
calibers. Nobody can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless
the ammunition is coded.
Any privately held uncoded ammunition must be
destroyed by July 1, 2011. (Including handloaded ammo.)
They will also charge a .05 cent tax on every
round so every box of ammo
you buy will go up at least $2.50 or more!
If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need
to take your gun!
This legislation is currently pending in 18
states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois,
Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New
York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and
Washington.
To find more about the anti-gun group that is
sponsoring this legislation and the specific legislation for each state,
Don’t take my word for it……CHECK IT OUT, FOLKS!!!! It’s a real
deal…..scary.
Terry Do # 117 -
I have long thought that women needed an Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for womens rights. Pure uncensored bulldogs rearing their ugly balding heads at every turn.
***********************************
Yes definitely strong women, in your face type of women, with the attitude, ‘you call me a bitch as if it is a bad thing’.
But also intelligent strong women you can articulate their message dogmatically and with a strong sense of this Constitutional issue is not debateable, it should have been place in the Constitution since day one!
I feel in this long protracted political season, with the misogyny directed almost equally to Hillary and Sarah, women on both sides of the aisle have been shocked and are ready for Change they can believe in. :)
Even though many of the stone throwers were/are women, it may be slowly dawning on their psyches, that they are part of the problem.
I understand the BC/citizenship issue, but the bailout situation has me far more concerned. There is no oversight and no exit strategy.
Obama and Pelosi and the Dems, heck, ALL the politicians know that without taking our money to bail everyone out, they are abject failures and don’t deserve their jobs.
The bailout may be a quick fix and save their jobs, but it’s poor fiscal policy which will enslave future generations to unmanageable debt.
I wish people would seriously look at this. The politicians are saving their own asses at everyone else’s expense. Any family or business that mismanages itself must file bankruptcy and rebuild. Our government just refuses to face the music of reality. Living in such a fantasy world they elected a completely inexperienced person to ’save’ us.
*sigh* Youth always thinks they know better. But it’s the elders who have, hopefully learned from their mistakes. Native American cultures would never dare to attmpt usurping their elders.
Sadly, no one is ‘minding the store’. Which means there is no one left to ENFORCE the Constitution. Even if the Courts DID say there was a violation!
ha, ha, not me… we need someone who won’t back down, who is smart, articulate, fearless, likeable etc etc. Remember it is going to much harder for a women. She has to be a pitbull with a smile.. Someone who has been in the spotlight as a celeb or in politics or someone who is a known face would help too.
This was just on CNN.com – hope it was not already posted..
Commentary: Sexism sneaks in over open mic…
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/02/campbell.brown.rendell/index.html
The story
How many times have politicians been warned about the dangers of an open microphone? And yet, on Tuesday, the lectern mic at the National Governors Conference picked up this little nugget from Pennsylvania’s Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell.
He’s having a conversation near the lectern about President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for to lead the Homeland Security Department, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano. Here is what Rendell said about Napolitano:
Rendell: Janet’s perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it
Wow. Now, I’m sure Gov. Napolitano has many qualifications for the job beyond having no family, and therefore the ability to devote 20 hours a day to the job. Watch Campbell Brown’s commentary
But it is fascinating to me that that is the quality being highlighted here as so perfect. C’mon. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is married with two grown children. His predecessor, Tom Ridge, had a family. Anybody remember a debate about whether they would have trouble balancing the demands of work and family? Read full article »
Deadgirl, so the source is not public and has not been published anywhere…
I saw Jordan beat the Iraq soccer team in 1999 and one of the goals was by an Iraqi who ran the wrong way and scored for the opposing team. Comments made at that time were that he would have a very hard time of it, and the whole team as well, with oblique references to torture. But it was a time of jubilation for Jordan. They had just buried the old king and the new king was sitting at the sideline wearing a 99 jersey–his fathers old number, and all the screensavers in the internet cafes had the late King Hussein with his team on a soccer field–”great legs” everyone said, in a country that does not show mens’ legs except on the soccer field. Two years later the screensavers had Osama bin Laden with his automatic weapon leaning against the inside of a tent and a mischievous boyish smile….
