Paul Krugman, hero of the ironic left, found the body and came back to his readers a changed man. “Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, is a date that will live in fame (the opposite of infamy) forever. If the election of our first African-American president didn’t stir you, if it didn’t leave you teary-eyed and proud of your country, there’s something wrong with you,” he wrote. After reading Krugman’s column millions of Americans frantically called their doctors to find out what, in fact, was wrong with them, because the Nobel Prize Winning Beard was apparently serious. Overnight, the Shrill One had become the Shill One.
The effects of Irony’s passing have been felt in several other cubicles at the paper of record as well. No one can fail to have noticed that Rita Skeeter’s toxic typewriter has been cursed with a transfiguration spell since the President Select’s ascendancy. Now a Koolaid Keyboard Kommando, Dowd will soon be entering rehab. Obamaddiction FORCES her to write kind, loving, and irony-free columns about JFK, I mean the Transcendent One, but we know her inner beast is gnawing through her stomach, clawing its way to the laptop where it can finally sate its lust by writing 500 words about Michelle’s ass or the secret sex life of black people. It’s not easy! Do you people know how DIFFICULT it is for Maureen to NOT write about important issues, like exactly HOW ugly are Michelle’s clothes or exactly how often she and her husband have sex? Every morning poor Maureen has to force herself by beating her own knuckles with a special, authentic Catholic Grammar School ruler she bought at Restoration Hardware for $17.50 to NOT speculate on the length of obama’s willi (edited for family audiences, I have my own gen-yoo-ine CGS ruler, ca. 1976, ouch!), but rather marvel at the awesome and magnanimous restraint he’s shown by not having Bill and Hillary brought out to Hyde Park and shot in the back of their heads. It’s not clear how long she’ll be able to hold on, how many articles about the ten phases of obama’s perfection she’ll be able to write before the beast wins and she can finally spit out a column about the sorts of things that really matter to her, like Michelle’s taste in thongs. I say she’s in a race to the bottom with Gail Collins, but knowing Dowd, she’ll break the pavement first even if she has to hitch a ride down by clamping her jaws around Chris Matthews’ ankle.
It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Irony to the functioning of the US punditocracy. Irony, in its various forms, provides the weak humor and lite intellectualism that masks the utter banality of their columns and reports, fooling us readers into believing that people like Rita Skeeter, David Brooks (well, not him, he’s always been too goofy and dull to be ironic, so we wont notice any change in Brooks), Frank Rich, and Richard Cohen actually add something to the national political discussion. Kind of like salt on minute rice, or cinnamon on wonder bread toast.
Apparently even The Onion, the last great Rampart of Ridicule, has fallen as well. Robbed of its most precious weapon, the satirical vegetable has retreated, its bite loosened by, guess what?, accusations of racism. Surprise!
Oh well. It is now racist to make fun of the president. No more sarcasm, snark, irony, ridicule, or any other kind of wit will be tolerated by the SCFP, unless it involves chopping Sarah Palin up into little pieces or using sentences that include the words Bill, Clinton, and Cigar. Thank god for the internet. Maureen Dowd and her ilk may be silenced (praise be), but I’ll be ridiculing President Precious, the Cool Hand Mook, until they pry my blog from my cold, dead fingers.
(I love that — “the opposite of infamy”! — okay Paul, we know that, but thanks for filling us in!)

I loved the comments about Maureen Dowd. I even sent them to her contact at the New York Times. Not that she will care much, but she must be at least a little sensitive.

Good morning Murphy, It amazes me how many puma remain after you sent us the most unflattering t-shirt in the history of clothing. 2008 will always be known as the year of the sausage arm. Sending you a package today. Don’t let it sit in the P.O. too long.

Which t-shirt might that be?? I think I have at least one of every t-shirt… no sausage arm look here.
It sounds almost like blaming the paint for making the house look like a porker. Which t-shirt?

The media was the same way about Bush–no one would criticize him, even when he wanted to invade Iraq, because, well, 9/11. They still won’t criticize him, his popularity is just in the basement and his team can’t get elected anymore. Isn’t groupthink curious.

I knew George Bush was bad when he was elected the first time. Alot more people knew Bush was bad when he was elected the second time.
I know Barack Obama is bad. All he will do is bring a different pack of pigs to the trough. I have nothing left for them to steal and if they come for my daughter with any mandatory civil service BS I am going to leave the country.
Please sign the petition
http://www.rallycongress.com/voterid/1408/no-to-mandatory-civil-service/
so we will not have to leave.
The obaminable one is still having his honeymoon with the media. But without his campaign finances pumping the hype machines, that is likely to change.

Speaking of donations …. (awesome stony and lilibet)
I am wondering if we could /should develop a ‘members only’ blog or even just a forum . With our expansion we have been attracting a lot of members who I am not sure they truly embrace our goals and mission statement .
There are some who are not willing to contribute anything other than hot air .
I am saying - if they want to come on here and blow off , fine but you will have to donate first …
I know some pumas are working on a membership card (I think ) maybe we are already thinking about moving in that direction ….
murphy 11.24.08 at 10:03 am
Good point TT. We are setting up Action Teams based on the 3 or 4 primary goals of the PAC. We already have a team working like gangbusters on obama’s campaign contributions and are setting up the media bias and election reform teams now.
I think as we move forward the most active pumas will find themselves doing a fair amount of communication behind the scenes as well as on the blog.
I’ve also heard the message from several about the need for a general budget so everyone knows how and where contributions are spent. I am also working on getting that out to members ASAP.
Thanks TT.

TexasTigress 11.24.08 at 10:15 am
M- I know Pumas always have actions going on and I am not concerned with you publishing a budget .
We have people (new ) who have shown no interest in working on actions or donating to the pac . It seems that they have their own personal agenda .
As we expand our membership , I think it needs to be understood that this IS a pac and membership is not only an honor , but also carries some responsibility to the achievement of our goals .
Whether it is financially or working on a project , all pumas should be committed in some way to the mission or I would as , “What the hell are you doing here ?”
Maybe I’m just being bitchy right now but ,darn it, a lot of OPs have had to put up with a LOT of crap on here lately ..

Mary Puma 11.24.08 at 10:16 am
Good morning PUMAs - just writing to say hi. I am leaving for a Thanksgiving trip, will be back in a week. So, Happy Thanksgiving to all the PUMAs out there. Keep the faith, as we continue to speak out. I watched a movie yesterday (on TV) reliving the Nuremberg trials, and how clear it was that Germans passively let Hitler kill the Jews. As PUMAs must stay active, speak out, when we see injustices and our democracy at stake. Only this will save our democracy.
Mary Puma 11.24.08 at 10:22 am
TT - I am committed to helping. I want to be on the caucus fraud team. I conribute at as I can.. Does that make you feel at bit better?
TexasTigress 11.24.08 at 10:25 am

or any other puma who has been committed one way or another . I’m just saying to the ones who have their own personal agenda - put up or shut up …
murphy 11.24.08 at 10:30 am
Hey there Mary Puma — enjoy your time with your family. And yes, of course, everything you do helps!
TT — I hear you but I find it difficult to assign blame to others since I”M the one who is supposed to be organizing actions — so I blame myself first. We can only work one step at a time here. Events in the outside world are not friendly to us or amenable to our mission. See RD’s post this morning for what I’m talking about.
http://riverdaughter.wordpress.com/2008/11/24/monday-oh-brother/
So every step of progress we make will be necessarily slow and sloggy, at least at the outset.
In the meantime I think it’s important for us to maintain our sense of camaraderie and community. Creating a perfect environment is impossible, but creating a good environment should be well within our reach.
and dont call yourself a bitch for crying out loud! expressing your opinion, especially a negative one, is EXACTLY what you should do. Dont undermine yourself.
Mary Puma 11.24.08 at 10:30 am
TT and Murphy, for what it is worth, I too agree that posting a public budget is not a good idea. There are too many people looking, not necessarily our friends, as TT says that could use it against the PUMAs. I think as PUMAs we trust you as our leader, period…
wontbackdown 11.24.08 at 10:30 am
Murphy
I am working on finishing up sending you a synopsis on what we talked about now. It’s a lot to explain - the “vision” and suggestions for executing.
It is so exciting! I think it holds a huge piece for moving forward with a Global PUMA action! All the pieces are already here!
I am working as fast as I can. Thanks for your patience.

Mary Puma this caucus fraud team what is this about? I’ve been gathering up information on voter fraud, also ACORN and talking to people but didn’t know there was a team for caucus fraud . There is so much out there about voter fraud and illegal donations, all that money he got during his campaign that he never answered to or showed his donor list. Let me know if you need help with anything.

Between Stoney and Mary Puma, I visited the Salvatorian Priests site as they had been in Lanham, Maryland for many years. The following is a little very interesting story about one of their Brothers.
“One famous story that Salvatorians love to tell about Bro. Isidore goes back to his days in the German army during World War I. As a corporal, he was sent back from the front lines to obtain supplies for the soldiers. One of the things they needed was straw for the soldiers’ bedding. The private in charge of the supply shed didn’t want the corporal to take any of the straw. When the private refused to obey his orders, Bro. Isidore slapped the young private and made him give him what he asked for. The private turned out to be Adolf Hitler. Years later, when Bro. Isidore would tell the story, he would add that, had it been a few years after that, he never would have gotten away with it and lived!”

Since there are more inherent ironies in Oblabla’s accession than in any noteworthy event in living memory, surely some professional comedians will screw their courage to the sticking place and let fly. (It might be best to slash and burn the whole “racism” thing by taking that on first, satirizing the egregious practice thereof while throwing bootless accusations all all and sundry. Then the way will be clear to take on transparent hidden illegal contributions and votes and ….).
However, we might then get to see how effectively a comic functions posthumously as a martyr.
TexasTigress 11.24.08 at 10:44 am

————–
I’m against separate blogs for members. Not that you suggested it, but, I’m also against monthly membership fees. I mostly enjoy the mid-evening socializing, but I get your point.
I could list a bunch of things, besides hot air, that gripe me…
I thought not engaging with the bs’ers would do it, but they always seem to find counterparts willing to interact. Maybe the direct approach is best?
Call out the bs artists, the gossips, the hot air artists, the jiving hustlers, those who DEMAND prowls but won’t lift a finger to put a simple one together, those who are always bragging about tossing money around while always promising to donate on Friday to that which they enjoy today (hasn’t happened YET!), those who think their “charm” (p.s. ‘charm’, as is everything else, is in the eye of the beholder), is enough to carry them through, those who are here for personal therapy, you know, in short, the dead weight.
TT let me know when you’re ready to call them out…
I’m ready when you are.
michelina 11.24.08 at 11:10 am
PUMA’S: we made more news: I LOVE IT when they talk about us:
From DISSENTING JUSTICE:
—————————————————————–
Obama’s Cabinet Not Ideologically Left
Obama’s picks also raise eyebrows because they do not mesh with the wildly enthusiastic praise that progressives gave his candidacy. Obama won overwhelming support from MoveOn, Daily Kos, HuffingtonPost, National Journal, and their followers. Progressives viewed Obama as being in the flock; Clinton, on the other hand, was a conservative in liberal attire (at least until Obama defeated her, and re-casting her as a liberal could help persuade/shame PUMAs to vote for him).

Kenyan Ambassador Ogego: “It is already an attraction. His paternal grandmother is still alive.”
Mike Clark of WRIF: “But his birthplace, they will put up a marker there?”

You can’t have attended a Catholic Grammar School unless you have an authentic ruler. Mine is circa 1936-45. The corrective device was augmented by being forced into self-flagellation against the stucco classroom wall, by piercing fingertips screwed into the errant one’s shoulder blade by a 6 ft. giantess in an angelwings hat, and being banished to the pitch black cloakroom to think about the great sin committed.
I love being reminded of thos days when the punishment may not have been exactly just, but it beats what’s being foisted upon us today in having to read/hear the media’s baloney on PEBO.
GoPumaGo 11.24.08 at 7:02 pm
I hated that Catholic Grammar School ruler. I tried to be good but damn it I got swatted too many times. It really hurt. But I did behave better. Maybe that is why I turned out better than what I see in the kids today.
That ruler was 3 foot long and I had to hold my hands out there and allow the nun to swat my hands. I had BVM nuns. Blessed Virgin Mary. We kids used to call them Black Veiled Monsters. haha.
The nuns really tried to love everyone but we usually had 60 to 62 kinds in a classroom. I guess the biggest problem was avoiding chaos with so many kids.
8th grade was the worst. We were on top of the ego world then. the big shots in school. My nun kept having mental breakdowns which we could never figure out why. I really loved Grammar School. Never did any homework. It was all fun and play.
