People Are Talking About

by murphy on November 18, 2008

in Circular Firing Squad, PURrrr!

This stunning poll at Tina Brown’s new digs, The Daily Beast.

“The poll’s key findings include:

  • By an overwhelming 61% to 19% margin, women believe there is a gender bias in the media.
  • 4 in 10 men freely admit sexist attitudes towards a female president. 39% of men say that a male is “naturally more suited” to carrying out the duties of the office
  • Only 20% of women are willing to use the word “feminist” about themselves. Only 17% of all voters said they would welcome their daughters using that label.
  • 48% of women thought Hillary Clinton received fair media treatment and only 29% believed Sarah Palin was treated fairly. In contrast, nearly 8 in 10 voters thought the press gave fair treatment to Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
The fact that 80% of women are unwilling to call ourselves feminists at the same time that nearly 70% of us say we are treated in a sexist way at work is a HEAD SCRATCHER!
It reminds me of a couple things. One, I’m in an ongoing email conversation with some women who are discussing whether the women’s movement should simply scratch the term “feminism” altogether and just use “humanism” or some other, less “compromised” term. My belief is that it’s misogyny itself that has compromised the term “feminism,” and even if we started calling ourselves “pretty pink pony fans,” we’d soon find ourselves being depicted like this. It’s not the word, it’s the reasons behind why we need the word in the first place.
Second, I’ve found over the past few months that other groups and some prominent individuals are unwilling to call themselves or associate their action with Pumas. Sometimes this rejection has been outright, more often it’s been subtle. We are “too political” or “too new” or “too out there.” Some on our side (Hillary backers, feminists, Democratic leaders, and delegates) have even bought in to the lie that we are secretly backed by zillionaire Republicans or that we are racists. Again, in the Puma context, the argument — sometimes unspoken, often explicit — is that we should drop the term “Puma” and come up with some other, more neutral descriptor.
Well, I say hogwash. What do yous all think?

Oh, and don’t forget to tune in to the wonderful Betty Jean and Robin on Puma United Radio (PURrrr!) at 9pm eastern. Their weekly show, Free US Now!, at its new home on PURrrr! Listen live HERE, and call in at (347) 539-5420!

KarenWI,

I think Fritzy might be able to get more help on animal blogs and animal discussion forums. Does anyone know of a good online animal lover community? There must be tons. Could also be a good researching method: to get advice for fixed income pet owners who need help.

Check out this link, has many links to help low income pet owners: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=50908

Also, please, contact the humane society and aspca, because, like I said: they will help. There are programs set in place for this specific purpose. I don’t understand why it is not being utilized.

The main goal is to get an equal amount of females on tv, regardless of role cast (I think), so it’s not actually about looking for sexist writing or situations, (I think) but more so about #’s.

I think PUMA is a great term! It focuses on what we’re about — swing voters, NOT party loyalists (for either party). And that we’re activists, we care and act — for EITHER party as necessary, pouncing and changing in mid-pounce if necessary.

And the term PUMA focuses on the issues behind the events that brought us into action: treatment OF HILLARY (and then of Palin) brought out the issue of sexism in media and in politics, and of the established women’s groups (NOW, NARAL, etc) failing to help.

And I think PUMA is identified with the sort of politics Hillary (and Palin) stand for: centrist common sense, getting done the things that EVERYONE can agree on.

Murphy – I love the “my little pony”. Funny, I don’t remember pissed off pony in my daughters collection of them.
I keep writing to any avenue I can find about the Canadian hate crime but I can’t even get a letter to the editor published. It is still regarded as a local story and has pretty much dropped off the map. I just can not believe it. Women should be up in arms but it seems like the attitude is either “it didn’t happen to me” or (and I am ashamed to even think this) “they deserved it”. Never say die. My keyboard will be smoking. I’m going to star signing my husbands name just in case they don’t intend to print a letter from a woman on the issue (another one of “them” attitude). If a letter from a man gets printed I will know w;which attitude I’m up against.

MURPHY——–

This group has only been formed since June….. do we cede to the ones who think they way they do like “We are “too political” or “too new” or “too out there.” Some on our side (Hillary backers, feminists, Democratic leaders, and delegates) have even bought in to the lie that we are secretly backed by zillionaire Republicans or that we are racists.”

I think now that we must keep our wits about us and not cede to these crazies. My personal belief is that we are hitting some home runs and causing dialogue which is sorely needed in this crazy “one-sided” socialist country. All voices of dissent must be silenced… are we going to be silenced by those that are not strong enough to see the truth? I have my doubts about that idea.

Everybody needs money for something. I read mountain’s post about caring about people and wishing she won the lotto to help.

Back when I was a donate-to-help-save the XYZ zillion organizations I was joined to, I would actually sit there and get upset, thinking:

One more dollar could plant a tree. Ten more dollars could be 20 mosquito nets–could save lives, maybe even a whole family! omg, 20 dollars to save a whole acre in the Amazon…that’s like what 2 million species? What if they are rare? What if they cut down plants that hold the cure for cancer? Baby orphan orangutans, must give 10 dollars to help with baby medicine. my gawd, how gentle they are, and they hug! Support Kenyan rangers–help them get equipment, could save an elephant…must save elephants, read that book “When Elephants Weep,”…they mourn and have elephant funerals…ah noo, why won’t pandas mate in capitivity? give 30 dollars for more private sanctuary with more bamboo. what? why aren’t we saving the rhinos? for g’d’s sake–they are prehistoric! …don’t kill the black bear, for chr*st sakes! humans stop moving into their land…why is the coral reef dying? whyeeee? need to get energy saving lightbulbs. cut the plastic soda links…it gets tangled…

on and on..

OK, I got tired of reviewing lists and I drafted a letter to the FEC with what I had. Any PUMAs want to do their own “study” and send a letter are welcome and I would be glad to help you with it. What I ended up doing is scanning the search results from OpenSecrets: http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/index.php

I just scanned for contributions totaling over $4600. If you need more details about them you can take the name back to the FEC site and look it up at:

http://www.fec.gov/finance/disclosure/norindsea.shtml

Here is the draft:
November 18, 2008

Office of the Attorney General
Federal Election Commission
999 E. Street, NW
Washington, D.C. 20463

Complaint of Over Limit Contributions and Request for Audit – Obama for America (C00431445) and Obama Victory Fund (C00451393)

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have noticed some disturbing discrepancies in the financial reports of the fund, Obama for America. As this is a Presidential Campaign Fund, I believe that it should be able to stand up to scrutiny and I am requesting an audit of this and the affiliated Obama Victory Fund. Discrepancies that I observed would indicate that the Campaign is overstating the amount of funds they raised. Considering the current economy and the amounts of money that were spent on this campaign, it would be negligent to overlook improper finances.

I noted discrepancies in a small study I did. I took a sample of donations from Florida, donors with last names starting A and B. This consisted of 3,126 donations totaling $1,930,913. I found 9 donors who contributed $5,100 – $9,200 to the Obama for America fund. The amount in excess of $4,600 each came to $20,000 or roughly 1% of the total. If applied to a $600 million total, this would indicate that the fund has approximately $6 million in over limit donations. It was noted that many of the excesses were related to transfers from the Obama Victory Fund.

This discrepancy is complicated by some transfers from the Obama Victory Fund to the Obama for America fund. The Obama for America reports list total transfers from the Obama Victory Fund as $58,450,000 , counted as it’s own campaign receipts. However, there are apparent disbursements from the Obama for America Fund to various state DNC funds as contributions to those funds in an amount totaling over $14 million. It is my understanding that such disbursements are supposed to by made by the national DNC (C00010603), the Obama Victory Fund being a joint fund with the DNC and Obama for America. And it does appear that $14 million was improperly transferred from the Obama Victory Fund to the Obama for America fund and an estimated $6 million was over the limit.

I would appreciate your investigation of these matters. I am requesting an audit of the Obama for America campaign fund. President-elect Obama has been unwilling to do any non-mandatory disclosure of his small donors. At least his required reporting should be in order. The Public depends on the FEC to assure compliance with fair practices. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours Truly,

Comments?

Thank you and am very glad to be a PUMA… I may not always be here, I lurk quite a bit, but did a lot of talking during the campaign and have tried to do most of the prowls since then. My thoughts are that to capitualate at this time would be disasterous to this blog.

There are many that are watching us though not involved here. Believe me we are being heard even if there are not those who participate or are against us.

We know that because of the vitriolic response we get on some blogs, but there are those of reason that see through that vitriole and may come to know the truth about this election. For those that do not we must write the history and not let it be forgotten!!!

casper cat — right, exactly.

Here’s the thing though, when the person who succeeds at making people believe in a beautiful dream is motivated by principled passion, compassion, and ideals we call her a HERO — a leader for the age, like MLK or Gandhi or (damn i wish i could fill in a woman’s name here, but you get my drift).

But when the person who succeeds at making people believe in a beautiful dream is motivated by selfishness, narcissism, and arrogance we call him –

Barack Obama!

Suffragettes (1900’s) were women who actively fought for the right to vote. Not all women did that, hence the distinction.
Feminists (1960s) were women who believed in and actively fought for, equality and the fair treatment of women. Again, not all women did.
Today, because of these women who have laid the groundwork and made so many advancements for all women, there is no longer a need to pigeonhole anyone with a label.
Women are women.

“humanism” or some other, less “compromised” term. My belief is that it’s misogyny itself that has compromised the term “feminism,” and even if we started calling ourselves “pretty pink pony fans,” we’d soon find ourselves being depicted like this. It’s not the word, it’s the reasons behind why we need the word in the first place.”
———————–
I was screaming about that bs “humanism” term in the radio chat room (where I get the bulk of my crazed screaming accomplished). Let’s sterilize everything reated to women so that everyone forgets that anything is associated with women.
Feminist principle is about everyone being lifted. Lofty goal, and one I believed in until this year.
Now, I’m a “Womanist” (the radio host got an embarrassed chuckle out of that… she needs to have her consciousness raised). Anyone who can;t deal with the term is not on our side. I think the caller suggested Humanist because it would be an easier term for men to deal with…

okay, i’m starting to get too worked up again. : X

i think i still have the pillow case.

the only reason i’d be happy to have Hillary as Sec of State is that she’d be in the news like every damn day and I could refer to her as “President, I mean Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.” that would be fun.

Murphy, since you asked…if we begin to believe those forces that want to diminish PUMA’s value by their continued ridicule or dismissal of us, perceiving that we were not a tipping force in the recent election (in spite of contributing to a hefty percentage of McCain’s totals), then we would slowly devolve into puddle of kitty pee. And we know we are more than that. We know what we are, and we know what we are not.

PUMAs are evolving. Evolution is opportunistic. It’s how we survive. We must fight on in newer skin, stronger muscles, sharper minds.

Puma is a gender neutral term.

that means they are assumed to be female until proven otherwise.

there’re Pumas and there are Male Pumas

(sometimes I amaze even myself)

Pumas AND Male Pumas are equally precious in the eyes of the Puma Goddess. There would be no Baby Pumas without Male Pumas.

Great story…like story by mom who had to tell one more bed time story to whining little one.

Ok, there was a mama kangaroo and then a daddy kangaroo, they hopped together–then they slapped their tails like a high five and then the end. More! Then they hopped into sunset–double kangaroo silhouettes. What’s a silhouette? Their um outline…like shadows… In the sun? They stopped hopping. Why? too many questions. Why? They were tired. I’m not! I guess my take on this is that “they” think they have beat us, but they have only rerouted us. We still have purpose, and perhaps many yet-undiscovered missions where we can be a voice that matters. As Murphy, and others here have mentioned over the last few days, our numbers need to increase, and I believe they will if our “targets” are clear and perceived as real threats to democracy and equitable treatment of all. They have to resonate deeply.
The fact that PUMA emerged from this god-awfully-long election is pretty awesome. People joined that had NEVER joined something like this before. I speak for myself here, but many of you have voiced this over the last few months. The passion was/is real.
I am not going to lick my wounds and curl up in a corner and play nice. I’m going to keep watching. I hope we will all keep watching and roaring out to the public.

133

GoPumaGo 11.18.08 at 11:31 pm

PUMA is a new name as far as I know. therefore it should carry no baggage. He wanted a different NEUTRAL word. well PUMA is a new neutral word. the guy is insane.

Feminist. I can see possible problems here. the word has been around a long time and must have some negative connotations. Why else would women not want themself or their daughter to be a feminist. We need a new word that women and daughters want to be that word. we need something cool and trendy and desireable.

I personally have only positives about being a feminist. we need to dig what is wrong here from people who see it negatively. I dont know this one. Or maybe we need the cultural idea used years ago where people were told to be Proud to be Black. We women need to say we are Proud to be Women or PUMA or Feminist or some new word.

134

goofsmom 11.18.08 at 11:31 pm

135

kat in your hat 11.18.08 at 11:32 pm

We should play a story linking game sometime. Someone would start a few sentences and someone can add the next part of story, and on and on. But then we’d all start bumping into one another and overlapping. how could we ever do that. dunno.

136

Casper Cat 11.18.08 at 11:33 pm

137

sue66 11.18.08 at 11:33 pm

I’ve been thinking about this and I think PUMA is a name we need. I think we are making some people uncomfortable because we are scoring hits. I have noticed the name popping up in comment sections on other sites. Always unflattering but that is because of what we are capable of doing. Other groups may be shying away from us because they bought the party line, crazies, whack jobs etc. We may seem too much against the established order. Interestingly enough PUMA was the name of a tank hunter killer in WWII. We have made PUMA what it is today and we are still evolving. I say, keep the name.

Here’s a story from Unheard American Voices You all should read:

Unheard American Voices published a new entry entitled “A Passport, A Presumed Presidency & A Regret” on 11/15/2008 9:44:08 PM, written by A Silenced Voter.

——————————————————————————–

A Passport, A Presumed Presidency & A Regret

A Passport, A Presumed Presidency & A Regret

My neighbor went to get his passport. They declined to even accept his application. What could be so very bad as to cause the postal representative to decline to even accept his application for a passport? It was his birth certificate. He was born in the state of California. The state of California had provided him with an “Abstract Birth Certificate” which clearly stated on it “This Is An Official Document”. I studied his birth certificate it is and was an official document from the recognized state of California.

His “Abstract Birth Certificate” provided a plethora of information about him and his parents and his birth. Yet, the postal service representative would not accept his certified abstract birth certificate as evidence of his natural born citizenship. He contacted the federal government travel department in Philadelphia about this issue. He spoke with a very nice woman who took the time to give him an explanation along with loads of information about obtaining his “long form birth certificate”

This very informative government worker told my friend that his “Certified Abstract Birth Certificate” was not acceptable for proving his citizenship for the purpose of obtaining a United States passport, the long form birth certificate was a requirement for obtaining a United States passport.

I should take a moment and explain something about my neighbor. He was an avid Barack Obama supporter during the general election. We have not been speaking too much because he found through our ‘talks’ during the general election he had no answer for any of my questions about his support for Barack Obama. At least none of the substantive questions. Basically his support came down to the hazy fact that Barack Obama was the democratic option and he was black therefor making it historic and something many have waited for and of course the old change mantra.

Having had this passport experience apparently he did some reflection. Reflection on a conversation he and I had previously had about Barack Obama and his birth certificate and the many issues Barack Obama would not allow anyone access to the information about, i.e. his school records, trip to Pakistan, and so very much more.

Fast forward to last night when for the first time in several months Jim, my neighbor, came knocking on my door. He came in and walked past our “Bucking The Party” yard sign and sat down and told us all about his birth certificate/passport saga. After going through his story and my examining his “Abstract Birth Certificate” he looked at me and said “Why didn’t Barack Obama have to show a long form birth certificate to run for president, if I have to show one to get a damn passport?”

All I could do was laugh. It was as if a light bulb had finally turned on and the light was blinding him. I could see he was troubled and upset but all I could say was “There is the 64,000 dollar question” We spent the following 4 hours discussing the primary the election and his growing regret for the vote he had cast.

Imagine an everyday working man born and raised in the United States can not get his passport to take his wife on their first overseas trip without providing the federal government with his long form birth certificate, but a man can be elected to the highest office in the land and never produce any valid documentation about who he is or who he has been.

The times they are a changing.

Here is a book I read for a University Course:

Guests of the Sheik: An Ethnography Of An Iraqi Village
by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea

Summary (found on the internet)
In the 1950’s, a newly-married American woman named Elizabeth Warnock Fernea accompanied her husband to a rural Iraqi village, where he was performing field research for his doctorate in anthropology. This book describes her experiences. The adjustment for her was profound, because she lived in a mud hut with no indoor plumbing, didn’t speak the local language, and found it advisable to wear the veil in order to fit in with the local conservative Islamic community.

In this book, the author covers the day-to-day life of the women in the tribe, the process of slowly making friends with them as she learned their language, and the local Shiite religious observances that she shared in. She talks about the veiling of women, the practice of polygamy, the hard manual labor that is part of everyone’s life, the religious customs, the food that people eat, the structure of society, and the encroachment of modern “civilized” life on the traditional rural culture.

I’d recommend this book to all women. I’ve read it several times since leaving Uni.

Woodie,

When do you need the money? By what date?

I will pitch in, but it must be on the “down-lo”! Let me explain …

I love animals and my partner loves them, but she is more of the “voice of reason” when it comes to them!
You see I have 6 dogs (not by choice. I find them in “terrible shape” and I do not have the heart to leave them behind. My intentions are to get them vet. care, (which I do) and fatten them up (which I do) and find them a great home (which I do -MINE!) One of those kinds of things! My partner just took two of my dogs to the vet. today … allergies. I give a monthly check to the humane society as well.
I will sent you some $$ when my partner goes to work tomorrow or the next day (if that is not too late) … You see, I already have to listen to her “ying yang” about the amount of dogs we have, the monthly vet. bills, my monthly donations etc…
Do I just go to the site, that I saw in an earlier post?

I’ve got NO PROBLEM with the title of “Feminist”, and never will. I wear that moniker with pride. Any woman who cannot embrace that title for herself (or her daughters) is consenting to her own eradication.
*****************************************
I personally wear it as an honor badge when someone calls me a feminist. I wear it proudly.
One evening, when I was 50 years old, I was out with a group of people and we were having a political conversation, and I made a statement, which kind of shocked the two younger women that were at the table. One of the ladies at the table was a 30 years old, and when I had finished my statement, she turned to the other gal and said “Oh Terry’s a real feminist. “
But it was said in such a fashion, that it was unusual for women to still be called a feminist and that was just 14 years ago.

The younger women think that they have arrived, that all of women’s needs have been met, by the old feminist guard.

If women do not have Equal Rights in America, how can other women around the world, with even less political clout ever hope to have equal rights?

I always say, get you own home straightened out before you go to your neighbors and try to her out!

No wonder 39% of men say that a male is “naturally more suited” to carrying out the duties of the office.
After all,(if I am permitted to complete their thoughts) women can’t even fight for their own equal rights, how could they fight against terrorists and enemies of America…

Women of America have to finish the job of Alice Paul for ERA.

About the term PUMA, the ‘PUMA brand’.

Remember what happened with Moveon in the 90s and then … what’s that telephone company that sent great action alerts etc etc? They both began left center, with things a large number agreed on that didn’t offend anyone: stop the impeachment, get rid of the extremists in Congress; basic environmental issues…. Then their alerts and causes got more frequent and further out, more controversial…. I didn’t WANT a sales tax on internet sales, which small businesses depend on. I didn’t like my donations being used for far-out things that would actually hurt me or people I care about.

I think that’s something the various PUMA groups need to be wary of.

Some people confuse feminism with femininity.

Also it has four syllables. Ever wonder why the F-word is so popular? Expresses emotion. One syllable.

But if you talk about women getting paid the same for doing the same job as a man, there you’ll get total agreement.

“Puma” is just totally cool. Quiet, lethal, sleek, cuddly, athletic. That’s us.

There’s no male, female, trans, black, white, native puma; it’s ALL puma.

TerryDo(#154)—thanks sister. The passage of the ERA is still on my Bucket List.
As for women and the “feminist” tag–sisters, if more of us would wear it, would PUMA even have been necessary? What is it going to take for women to say enough is enough?

I don’t know whether to laugh or bitch about the following article. A long article on MO’s style and how finally after two decades, style in a first lady has come back. Unbelievable. Apparently Hillary and Laura were a pair of hayseeds that should not have been let out without someone to dress them.

The part of me that has been socialized to bow to other people’s perceptions says dropping the term PUMA would make us more effective.

The part of me that flips society the bird says keeping the term PUMA would keep the term and our true meaning in their faces, which will make the status quo uncomfortable, which is the whole point, damnit.

Later for people being comfortable. I say keep the term PUMA in all of its manifestations. People who are going to oppose us will do it no matter what we call ourselves.

I’m for dropping the term feminism, feminist, since it has lost its meaning through the ages. Somewhere it became synonomous with “femi-Nazi”, and all the other derogatory terms. I’m still stuck in the 70’s when it was “women’s liberation”, so I am a women’s libber still. I like Puma, it strikes a certain amount of fear/loathing/uncertainty in the realm of the Obamaphiles, they detest us and they are still rebelling at the mere thought of us, and quite frankly, anything that can disturb the Obama’s Kool Aid stupor has got to be good.
