I turned the TV over to my son. Until we at least 80% of the poll locations in each state reporting then we have no reason to panic or be nervous.

I just worked 8 hours in my rural PA poll. The turnout was HUGE, and not all Republican, either. So I’d venture to say that the exit polls are not entirely wrong.

At this point, this is like playing a game to draw it out. The western most states, alone (Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington) are going to hand Obama over 100 electoral votes. I’m sorry, but this seems like needless torture. McCain will continue to get small states and the map will start to look impressively red, but they are not big electoral vote states.

I agree, my husband votes in Escambia County, FL and it is heavy (R) with lots of military absentee votes.

Feeling better now; just clicked on the counties in western PA — many have not yet begun reporting or are showing McCain slightly ahead with only 25% or so of precincts reporting in.

Regarding VA — PWC went reliably red, re-electing Frank Wolf again, Obama thought he could turn this ex-urb blue, I think McCain is going to get VA as well.

On exit polls being wrong and votes breaking for Hillarey. In ’04, Dems mostly ALL voted for Kerry. There was really no reason not to. If 20% of Hilarey (sorry, don’t know how to spell her name) voters break for McCain, that’s 4 MILLION going to the other side.

We absolutely should do that here. I heard a ridiculous piece on NPR this morning with more double speak than I could keep track of. The gist was that as news media, they rationalize that it’s their job to inform the public (Oh, yeah, right! Like ya’ll did all year, huh?), so if they have results from the east coast, heaven forbid they withhold this from the public. It’s all a crock. And no media outlet wants to be outdone by another, so I do believe it does need to be an agreed upon policy, perhaps imposed by the government that no results are reported until the last poll closes.

I could see a shift in attitude among those I was calling all day in CA. During the past hour or so (as results were coming in from the east) I spoke with several peoplel who sounded utterly apathetic. No one said outright they weren’t going to vote. But, during the entire afternoon, everyone I spoke to who had not yet voted, said they were going to vote.

Hey no one ever said democracy was easy (or fair). You all have worked your tails off and you have no idea how impressed I am. Unfortunately even if Mac wins the battle isn’t over. If Puma’s don’t vet these politians who do you think will? The media? I think puma’s have only begun to prowl. (I also think it is about time I put my money where my mouth is!)

Winning or losing isn’t based on the number of counties you win. Some counties are highly populated, otheres are very rural. That’s also part of how they project the winner: Once they see the most populated areas reported, they can extrapolate from there knowing the population of other areas in a state, voter reg, party affiliation, exit polls, etc. I know everyone’s waiting for hard numbers, but I do believe that what we’re seeing now is nothing more than what countless pollsters have reported for a while now and it’s not all just one big conspiracy. Plus, like I said in an earlier post, the political landscape is shifting in America as baby boomers, many of whom are Dems, retire and relocate to red states, turning them purple and blue.

We’re wall watching the unfolding of the perfect storm: corruption, enormous funds, well oiled campaign and get out the vote machine, bad year for any Republican to run with Bush’s approval ratings so low and the economy in collapse, exploiting white guilt, etc.

For anyone who wants good news, this is what I have to offer:

We will all wake up tomorrow and carry on. Phase 3 will begin soon enough. We’ll all be here, working or a***** off and having each other to lean on.

Esp. in America. I’ve come to believe that Americans are unable to govern themselves. Democracy requires an informed and intelligent populace, which the presidential choices in my adult life (starting with Nixon and ending tonight) have shown that such doesn’t exist in this country. Let’s see there was Nixon, then Carter, then Reagan, then Bush the elder then Clinton (the one intelligent choice), then Bush the younger and now possibly our first Fascist president.

“You all chill, but IF the people voted for NObama, this country deserve the government they get.” – One teenie, tiny problem is that we ALL get that government. That’s what so scarey! Being able to say “I told you so” means precious little to me if we’re all being blown to smitherines (sp?)!

They call states based on the exit polls UNLESS the exit polls from the precincts used are more that 10% off the actual results from that precinct. For example: if precinct #1 exit polls show McCain with 56% and Obama with 44% but the actual results coming in from precinct #1 are McCain 51% and Obama 48%, they will not call the state because its within the 3% margin of error.

If, like what I’m guessing is going on with OH and PA, the exit polls from the precinct are Obama 56% and McCain 44% and that precincts actual report is Obama 54% and McCain 46%, then they will call the state for Obama.

Remember that not all precincts have exit polls–only certain ones within the state so the “calling” of states is really subjective.

I realize things are not looking good, but remember that what counts is not the exit poll projections but the actual tally certified by each Secretary of State.

The media has had egg on their faces for the last two elections – in 2000, they called Florida for Gore based on exit polling. In 2004, they called Ohio for Kerry based on exit polling. Both of those projections were wrong in the end.

Also, the more rural areas of the states generally come in later than the urban areas.
